Re: [Elecraft] Big Box K-3
I just want to be able to see the entire menu (or more of it) over on the P3 all at the same time and I want to see the menu item and the current value that they are set to. Here is an example of how it could look: http://www.tentec.com/images/6.jpg This way as you're barreling through the options you eye can be looking for the one you want and can see more at once rather that only one at a time. I really like how fast one can traverse the menus with the two knobs and the tap disp for default value and a tid bit of help works wonderfully but they could be much more user friendly and better integrated as a product if you could get a view like that of above on the P3! ~Brett (N7MG) On Mon, 2010-08-09 at 21:47 -0400, Don Wilhelm wrote: Brett, I think the K3 gets an undeserved bad rap for the menus. The main menu has only 13 items in it, and those are the items most likely to be changed during operation. Assigning these menu items to buttons might make sense in some instances, but I don't change mics very often, nor do I change the LED or LCD brightness often, so even the MAIN menu in my K3 gets little use. Yes, the CONFIG menu is large and has many settings, but those are usually changed only as one has occasion to add options, or experiment with some of the settings to see if the operation of the K3 can be improved (such as the AGC settings). I cannot see the CONFIG menu items needing a button because they should not be needed in normal operation - experiment a bit to determine the best setting, and then leave it there. Too much monkeying with the CONFIG menu can lead to unintentional changes that cause stange and confusing happenings. If there is a need to access a CONFIG menu item frequently, perhaps one should lobby for moving that menu item to the main menu. 73, Don W3FPR Brett Howard wrote: ... make the menus of the K3 more user friendly. ~Brett (N7MG) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] P3 additions
Hi All, I would really like to see the P3 display the config and main menu with the ability to select and make changes (as did the FTdx9000D) and a waveform audio display on Tx and Rx. Both of course as optional displays so as to not take away from the current versatility of the P3. These features, when announced officially as future enhancements, would have me reaching for the plastic yet again. 73's Gary -- Gary VK4FD - Motorhome Mobile http://www.qsl.net/vk4fd/ K3 #679 For everything else there's Mastercard!!! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Product Suggestion Big Box K3
Remote Internet control would be nice, but I'd rather it be a virtual control panel on my computer screen. Then I could travel anywhere and connect to my ham shack for remote operation. [Elecraft] K3: PRE/ATT Bug or feature?
My K3 (SN 1069, fw 4.03) has always exhibited the ability to have PRE and ATT on simultaneously. If one engages ATT by a long hold, then hits PRE with a tap (same button), the display shows both functions engaged. The converse is true too, i.e. PRE engaged with a tap, followed by ATT with a long hold. Signal levels by ear and S-meter seem to indicate both features are on simultaneously. The appropriate length hold will turn one feature off, as indicated by the display. Levels change accordingly. Is this a bug, or an undocumented feature? Re: [Elecraft] How to demo P3/K3?
Don, The main difficulty I believe with down-converting a band to audio, and then up-converting back to RF to demonstrate the performance of the P3, could be the spurious products generated during each conversion, which might reflect badly on the true performance of the P3 if the products generated during each conversion resulted in spurs within the chosen span of the P3. If the P3 included a record - playback scheme similar to that provided by the Perseus SDR, it would then be vey easy to demonstrate the performance of the P3. So far I have not found any alien spurs when using this feature of Perseus. I have not yet investigated how this scheme is implemented in Perseus, but on occasion when using my Perseus either as a panadapter or as a stand-alone receiver I have recorded up to several hours worth of band activity. Mind you the total size of the resulting files is massive!! The record-playback feature is also very useful when using Perseus as a spectrum analyzer during the development of circuitry, in that it provides a record of the effect of changes made. FWIW 73, Geoff GM4ESD Don Wilhelm wrote on Monday, August 09, 2010 8:19 PM You don't have to build that mixer to shift the ham band down to the audio range, a Softrock receiver will do that. For that matter, you don't need the I and Q channels, so any DC receiver without audio filtering after the mixer will do that job too. Turning it back into RF is the bigger problem. You need an SSB generator followed by a wide band filter for that unless you want to tolerate the carrier and the opposite sideband as well. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I'd take a bigger box to have those band buttons. 73 Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Storing frequencies and bandwidth
You can recall the default bandwidth for each roofing filter by using the XFIL button. If you then used PF1/PF2 for two other bandwidths you would not tie up M1 - M4. When operators come in and have an hour or two to learn things, it is easier to relabel the M1-M4 bandwidth and just tap them. When there is QRM and a contact lasts only a few seconds bandwidth needs changed fast! Push and hold takes too long. The RIT and XIT are also used all the time, so there is that consideration. It would be nice to have a second frequency tucked away for instant recall with one quick tap, not what is on VFO A or B. If you free up M1 - M4 you can store four frequencies per band ... to save them it's VM M1-M4, to recall them it's MV M1-M4 (in fact it appears that you can have eight frequencies and M1-M4 can be both tap and hold). The use of RIT and the need for speed in changing BW means I have to keep bandwidths on M1-M4. It might be ok but it might also be too inconvient with so many button pushes, I haven't tried it because one of the first suggestions was to get bandwidths on push buttons. :-) I'll give it a try though by eliminating one preset bandwidth and see how it plays. It's just really nice to have a stacking memory in the BAND buttons. Everyone I know uses it far more than regular memories. I haven't tired it but you might even be able to use Hold M1-M4 for setting bandwidth No, that has to be FAST. and MV tap M1-M4 for your per band scratchpad memories. That might be able to be a hold, I'm going to try making the hold delay longer. 73 Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 #5717 for sale
Ladies and Gents: I am selling my lovingly built K2 (#5717). K2 (10 watt) ... with the following options: Complete set of unmodules with the mic adapter, K160RX (built but not installed), K60VX, KAF2, KAT2, KIO2, and KSB2. All it will require for the 160m option is to install the BNC adapter, and solder the center and ground leads from the board to the BNC. With the unmodules, the rest is plug and play. If you were to purchase the kits for a new K2, you would spend $1300 with Elecraft ... and you cannot purchase a full unmodule kit today (I paid $70 when I built the radio). In addition, the radio has had a final adjustment and alignment in October, 2009 by Don Wilhelm (W3FPR). I've used the radio once since the alignment ... You will receive every scrap of documentation that are in my files, cables, Don's report about alignment, etc. etc. I would like $1100 for it. If it doesn't sell for that amount, I will sell to the highest bidder in the next 24 hours. We can discuss shipping. Paypal is OK ... Continental US shipping only. Thanks in advance. [Elecraft] I can hear stations on other side of Zero beat
Hi all, I just finished building my K2 and it seems to be working well on receive. However, I have noticed that I can hear CW stations on both sides of zero beat when using the widest (1.5kHz) filter setting. It's not just a weakly audible signal for very strong 59+20 signals, which I would expect. I can hear a 59 signal at S7 or S8. With the 0.7kHz signal this is not the case, so I presume it is to do with the way that I have setup the filter and the BFO. What have I done wrong? Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] I can hear stations on other side of Zero beat
Chris, There are 2 things 'wrong' which are contributing to your problem. First, the varactors that have shipped recently have a greater capacitance range than they used to - same type number, so 'go figure'. The result is that the filter widths at the wider settings are substantially wider than indicated by the K2 display - so the recommended FL1 setting of 1.50 kHz may actually be as wide as 2.00 kHz. The filters less than 1.00 width seem to be running about normal. The second thing 'wrong' is a result of the first - the BFO settings in the manual are no longer correct due to this change in the varactor performance. The cure is to use Spectrogram to set your filters. Make sure you set the wide CW filter off to one side of zero frequency on the Spectrogram screen. Spectrogram will allow you to measure the actual width of your filters. Take a look at the K2 Dila Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com for information about using Spectrogram (part 3 is about setting the filters). The application is available for download from Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.net. You will find a similar problem with the SSB filter set - the width is much wider than indicated by the K2. Spectrogram will give you the tool to visually see this and make the proper adjustment. 73, Don W3FPR g0kla wrote: Hi all, I just finished building my K2 and it seems to be working well on receive. Re: [Elecraft] I can hear stations on other side of Zero beat
Thanks Tom and Don for helpful advice. I will try Spectrogram to re-setup the filters. So far I just set them up using the data in the table in the manual. If you have a PC available to use (even if only temporarily) with your K2, you might consider going to my web site and downloading Spectrogram v5.1.7 and the written docs (immediately below the Spectrogram link) which specifically detail how to use Spectrogram to ACCURATELY adjust your BFOs so that the filters are working as well as possible. That should address your problem. The ONLY 'additional' device you'll need will be an audio (monaural) cable to go from the K2 SPKR output to the MIC (or LINE) IN input on your PC. It's not just a weakly audible signal for very strong 59+20 signals, which I would expect. I can hear a 59 signal at S7 or S8. With the 0.7kHz signal this is not the case, so I presume it is to do with the way that I have setup the filter and the BFO. What have I done wrong? Any ideas? You know, sooner or later this practice is going to backfire. Someone is going to swap, say, SN 150 for SN 50. Re: [Elecraft] K3: PRE/ATT Bug or feature?
This is NOT a bug, this is working EXACTLY as it should. Some time you want to have a little extra gain, but not as much as the Pre does alone. In this case you will run the Pre ON, and the ATT on at the same time. No bug there. Just another way Elecraft has made the K3 a versatile rig for finding weak signals in a loud noise floor. Re: [Elecraft] K3: PRE/ATT Bug or feature?
This is one of those things that has always been possible in radios that had both. In the MP, with the 0-6-12-18 ATT and both IPO and menu selected preamp function, it has always been possible to do preamp with the ATT set. Make any sense? Maybe, but don't think so. Even less so on a K3 A lot of the design decisions in the K3 appear to have been made with an eye to keeping the APPEARANCE of analog function, e.g. so called RF gain. The menu driven RF gain on the Orion was always a startup learning issue. I'm sure Wayne was watching. It certainly is possible in firmware to not allow the PRE to be set when the ATT is on. But why put up with the support calls about can't turn on PRE when it doesn't behave like predecessor radios, when most will intuitively understand that ATT+PRE equals neither. Most of the time I don't need to be protected from myself. The other times no one can help me anyway. : ) 73, Guy. [Elecraft] monitor toggle?
Is there a command to toggle the monitor function on and off without changing the level? I operate with both headphones and external stereo speakers plugged in. When I'm ragchewing or just messing around, I'll use external powered stereo speakers, but when I'm more serious about a contact, I'll put on the headphones and turn the volume down/off for the speakers. With speakers, the monitor needs to be off, but I like it on while using headphones. I'm hoping to find a way to toggle the monitor on/off when I switch back and forth, but without having to mess with levels. Is there such a way, or am I stuck with ML00 to turn it off, and then having to force it to a particular level to turn it back on? Having an on/off TOGGLE would also allow me to use a single macro/button for the function instead of having to use two different ones. Re: [Elecraft] Big box K3
I don't really have a horse in this race because I am personally very happy with my K3 (#693) and, knowing that Wayne's Engineering degree included emphasis on Engineering Ergonomics, I am satisfied that he has given us the best possible radio in the form factor that is most popular to most people who represent his target market. However, while there is nothing wrong with dreaming and asking for changes, I wonder how many of the Big Box k3 requesters have considered the magnitude of the effort required on Elecraft's part to deliver such a thing. First, the job would not be as trivial as simply re-packaging the insides in a bigger box. It would involve the design and testing of a new RF board and front panel in order to remove controls and displays to a different front panel (which would also have to be designed and tested) and to remove ports to a different back panel. Internal cable routing, shielding, and structural support would have to be altered with consequent testing as well. Cramming the P3, KPA500, and a power supply inside would only complicate things further. Also, because functions would have to be removed from menus and associated with front panel hardware, the firmware would have to be rewritten, which would require two versions to be maintained in parallel and alpha/beta tested for each release to keep them in sync. Elecraft is a small company, and most of the design and programming is done by only a couple of people whose jobs would grow enormously, and which would deprive other, more critical projects of their time and effort. Second, how much would the Big Box people be willing to pay for the upgrade, and how many could Elecraft expect to sell? My guess is that in order to amortize the time and materials to develop such an upgrade given the considerations above, each unit could cost as much as the K3 itself (possibly more depending on expected sales volume), which could bring it into the price range of some of the big iron with which it favorably competes, both cost- and feature-wise. I suspect that there would not be many takers at those prices. I'm sorry that some of the current owners of K3s seem to be disappointed in it. Every engineering project is a trade-off, and I think that Wayne and Eric represent the Burt Rutans of the radio world. Given that, I don't think that even Burt Rutan would consider adapting a VariEze (K2) or a Starship (K3) into an AirBus form factor, and I doubt that very many customers would buy one. 73 de Steve, NN0B -Original Message- From: Nicholas Farrar [mailto:nfar...@bfpacs.com] Sent: Monday, August 09, 2010 7:32 PM To: elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] Big box K3 * So stop making noise just to be heard. The roadblock for me and probably many others would be how to integrate the device into your Mac/DigiKeyer, my PC/WriteLog, another person's PC/MiwW, etc.. Hopefully a computer savvy person will have a go at it and make the solution available to others. 73, Mike K2MK M0XDF wrote: Joe, how would I use X-keys (say a stick) on a Mac running OSX 10.6.4 via a DigiKeyer? 73 de M0XDF And you think Elecraft can produce something in small quantities at a price competitive with a larger market product, sell it to a subset of the 5000 K3 owners at a lower price than the equivalent commercial product and make a reasonable profit? Re: [Elecraft] Big box K3
Given that, I don't think that even Burt Rutan would consider adapting a VariEze (K2) or a Starship (K3) into an AirBus form factor ... Seems like a bad choice for an example. Burt did create the Long-EZ, a larger version of the VariEze. Mark On Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 1:18 PM, Steve Harvey n...@embarqmail.com wrote: I don't really have a horse in this race because I am personally very happy with my K3 (#693) and, knowing that Wayne's Engineering degree included emphasis on Engineering Ergonomics, I am satisfied that he has given us the best possible radio in the form factor that is most popular to most people who represent his target market. 73 de Steve, NN0B __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Power supply
How much would you be willing to pay for an internal uninterruptible PS in the P3? Let's see: Working from what we already know . . . Gamma Research HPS-1a is $169 According to Ron AC7AC there is only 4x4x6 space available in the P3, so keeping that as a limiting factor, even the following LiFePO4 battery pack would fit in: Powerizer's 12.8v (working; 14.6v peak; 10v cutoff) 9.9aH (127WH at 21amp) LiFePO4 battery pack (4S3P) 2lbs, 4.3x3.3x3.4 [since LiFePO4 batteries allow full power operation through more than 95% of its capacity, this pack would allow for significant operational time at 100w. Also note this technologies reputation for safety (no fire or explosion risk), 10+ year lifespan with thousands of full discharge/charge cycles, and quick recharge times.]Current Price = $154 [$139 in quantity] Of course, one might not need anything nearly as large as this battery pack for the intended function! Powerizer also lists a 6.6aH pack for $75. So one could reasonably surmise that it should be possible to sell an internal P3 PS along the lines suggested for somewhere between $175 to $350. At anything like these prices, I would buy it without hesitation. 73 John N6JW WILLIS COOKE-2 wrote: How much would you be willing to pay? $300, $500? In effect this would replace the large caps in the HPS-1a design, with the LiPo battery. Bottom line: a universal voltage uninterruptible internal PS. Re: [Elecraft] Big box K3
True, but it's a different airplane--not a VariEze with a larger fuselage wrapped around it. 73 de nn0b, Steve -Original Message- From: Mark Bayern [mailto:plcm...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 12:37 PM To: Steve Harvey Cc: elecraft Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Big box K3 Given that, I don't think that even Burt Rutan would consider adapting a VariEze (K2) or a Starship (K3) into an AirBus form factor ... Seems like a bad choice for an example. Burt did create the Long-EZ, a larger version of the VariEze. 73 de Steve, NN0B __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Power supply
The rigs most of us remember with matching power supplies - the Collins, Heathkits, etc.- HAD to have custom power supplies designed to provide specific voltages and the specific currents needed. That went away with the advent of the rigs designed to run from 13.8 VDC. [Elecraft] P3 Manual Rev A3 changes
Took a quick look at the rev A3 manual after using rev A2 last night to assemble and test the P3. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the addition of a Servicing the P3 section at the end of the rev A3 version. Talks about removing the covers, cleaning the bezel, replacing the display, etc. 73 Craig AC0DS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 Manual Rev A3 changes
There are some other changes in the operating section. Here's a summary of the significant changes: 1) Incorporated outstanding errata A2-1. 2) Integrated Appendices into main document to allow better cross-referencing between sections. 3) Added Servicing section including one page of notes for -F owners about how to remove/replace individual boards, how to clean the bezel safely and one page of detailed instructions for removing/replacing the LCD panel (pgs 37, 38). 4) Added instruction to perform frequency calibration for best accuracy to Quick Start Basics (pg 5). 5) Added explanation of changing baud rates to Rear Panel connectors/RS232 on page 13 6) Edited first para under Programmable Functions to note that FM REV cannot be assigned to a key. 7) Fixed typo in the last line of the first para under Using Markers changing upper sideband to lower sideband. 8) Added note to warm up transceiver and P3 for 30 minutes before doing the calibration (pg 19). 9) Under Menu Functions , DispTest changed instruction to read Tap MENU to exit.
