[Elecraft] 4A4A Revillagigedo Island DXpedition

2011-03-04 Thread Jim Sheldon
P3 and the K3's subreceiver Just paid for themselves this morning! Heard 4A4A
on 7.014 working split and he had 'em spread out to about 6 KHz up. Managed to
easily find a spot between the last 2 he worked and even with my low antenna
and only 100 watts, got 'em on the second call.

Sure would be nice to have the VFO B cursor with a line similar to the marker
sticking up above the noise floor, or allow the VFO B marker to follow the
cursor when working split. That would make it much easier to spot the TX
frequency precisely when chasing a pileup like this one.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote control of K3

2011-03-04 Thread PKA
There are many possible solutions for RC today.
What I describe here has one specific advantage: it is very cheap to implement.

I am using HRD. My preferred opr mode is CW so I had to buy a winkeyer.
I use Logmein.com for remote access to the shack. Since my IP address is
dynamic, I am using DynDNS.com.
Both services exist in a free-of-charge version which is adequate for my
purpose.

I did operate with HRD on the remote PC in a client-server configuration for
the first few years. It gives a faster responding control over the K3, but the
serial link which is needed for CW is very sensible to link quality and drops
out from time to time - very annoying, so I decided to use a remote desktop
solution.

The solution with "HRD-over-Logmein" has the following advantages:
- essentially free of charge (must have a winkeyer, must have a shack PC)
- works CW (and other modes)
- can be operated from any PC (does not need to have any special programs
installed except for Skype)
- the log is always on the same PC (using HRD log)
- it operates fast enough to work DX pile-ups where timing is essential

NB: I am now using an USB media controller (dial knob) from Griffin on the
remote, so I can dial over the band in the same way as in front of the K3. This
is somewhat nicer than using the mouse or arrow-keys.

I have been using the N4PY Pegasus Plus software package for some time now with
great success with the K3, transverters, amplifiers, and rotor ( www.n4py.com).
He has a client server architecture that lets you run the software without
needing to expend the bandwidth required by a remote desktop solution. My
client is set up to interface directly with the N1MM logging program as well.
The documentation shows it will control a Hy-Gain rotor and the LP-100, not
sure about the Alpha.

One caution if you are using a USB adapter, the Prolific USB adapter can get
overloaded and throw out bogus information from time to time, the FTDI based
adapters appear more stable.

Subject: [Elecraft] Remote control of K3

GM  I'm doing some planning for the remote control of a station and would like
some help regarding the PC based control software.  From what I've read so far
the RemoteRig RCC-1258 looks like an interesting approach using TRX-Manager (it
seems to have more functionality than HamRadioDeluxe).

Have access to high speed internet at both ends and would like to be able to
control / use  a K3, Alpha 87A, Hy-Gain rotors (with rotor-ez), LP-100A.  Modes
to include SSB, CW,  RTTY & PSK31.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions / comments.

[Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Headphone Jack Problem

2011-03-04 Thread Mark Cherry
Hi all,

I have been experiencing a problem with the front panel headphone jack.
Regardless of the ¼” plug used, I must put side pressure to get both audio
channels to function, and then the weight of the cord will cause the
connection to be lost again. I realize the jack most likely needs
replacement and that is where my question comes in.

Has anyone had this issue and/or replaced one of these? I can purchase the
part from Elecraft, but should I damage the DSP board, I’ll need to purchase
a new one. Also, if Elecraft attempts a repair, and they are not
successful, again, I am on the hook for a new board, about $400.00.

I would like to be able to use the front panel jack, I know there is one on
the rear, but the convenience is not there.

So, if anyone has any hints or experience on replacing this part, I would
really like to hear from you. I can’t imagine I am the only one having a
problem as this jack has rarely been used, until my current need came up.

Thanks to all in advance for your input.

[Elecraft] P3 VFO B marker.

2011-03-04 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hi Alan,

I see that there have been some wishes expressed on the List about marking
the frequency of VFO B on the P3.

FWIW the scheme that I used with my old homebrewed panadapter (now retired)
was to mark the frequency of VFO B by a vertical line, which ran from the
top to the bottom of its spectrum display. The main reason for making the
marker line so long was to prevent it from disappearing should some very
strong signal land on the same frequency as that of VFO B. The problem with
a typical inverted delta marker is that it can be difficult to see in the
heat of battle, and it will bounce as well of course.

I use the same type of marker for VFO B when using my Perseus as a
panadapter, which has both a spectrum and a waterfall display.

Geoff

[Elecraft] Band Changing Macro

2011-03-04 Thread Don Nelson
I am now learning to create macros for my K3.

I want to make a macro that will take the K3 from whatever band and
frequency where it is and go to the last used frequency on another band,
say 10m. I have made a macro that will take the K3 to 28.400 MHz. I want
a macro to take the K3 to 28.xxx where xxx is the frequency where the K3
was when it was last on 10m.

As a bonus, I would like to have a frequency FIFO (first in first out)
stack. I doubt that this can be done with a macro or set of macros. But
it is worth asking none the less.

Re: [Elecraft] K2-KBT2 battery

2011-03-04 Thread JAMES ROGERS
My documentation specifies the following battery:

http://www.power-sonic.com/images/powersonic/sla_batteries/ps_psg_series/12volt/PS-1229_10_Dec_15.pdf

which is according to the manufacturer is a 2.9AH SLA (sealed lead acid)
battery. I know my kit was assembled in 2010. Not sure when it was purchased
as I am the second owner. Maybe at some later date Elecraft has switched to a
Gel Cell.

I replace my battery with an equivalent with slightly less ampere hours (2.2AH)
as it was locally available (Batteries Plus) and the cost was nominal at $19.26.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Headphone Jack Problem

2011-03-04 Thread Jim McDonald
I wanted to avoid wear and tear on the jack and instead am using a Radio
Shack Stereo Audio Selector, which is a 3-way switch plugged into the rear
speaker jack. I have my old, powered Sony computer speakers (which I like a
lot) and two different headphones plugged into the switch.

I just bought a 2-way switch that has three jacks at Amazon for $7.95, the
third jack being a yellow video jack. That was much cheaper than the Radio
Shack switch, which is probably now discontinued.

The mini-phone jacks in the back on the KIO3 board seem fragile. The plugs
don’t seem to seat securely, which is another reason I wanted to avoid using
them often. (Maybe they would fit better of I had the plugs that K9YC
likes.)

Re: [Elecraft] Band Changing Macro

2011-03-04 Thread Jim McDonald
You can go to the last used frequency and mode on a band by configuring
CONFIG:MEM 0-9 to BAND SEL. I also use the M1-M4 quick memories for each
band. I set up all of those memories using the Elecraft K3 Frequency Memory
Editor Program.

This information is on page 16 of the current manual.

I use free DXLab Suite of programs (http://www.dxlabsuite.com/) including
the Commander rig control program. That program has ten banks of ten
memories each so selecting a memory takes one or two mouse clicks, making it
much more flexible than using the memories in the K3.

Hello Gentleman,

The battery technology for Li-Po is very mature.  If you wish, please consider
a
Li-Po battery pack at 3.3Ahr capacity.  Light weight and more power but of
course, you have to select good quality one with protective circuit PCB.

[Elecraft] K3 and K2 - concerns about power into RX ant

2011-03-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
There have been several concerns expressed on the reflector about how
much power is being sent into the K3 RX antenna (also applies to the K2
with a K160RX option).

Rather than guess if that level is safe for the radio, why not just
measure it? It is easy to do. Try this:

Do you have a wattmeter that is accurate at the 1 to 2 watt level? If
so, connect it to the receive antenna (make certain the antenna is
terminated into a 50 ohm load either within the wattmeter or with an
in-line wattmeter, connect the dummy load to the ANT side) - note that
for this measurement, the receive antenna is the "transmitter".

If you do not have an accurate QRP wattmeter, then connect the antenna
to a dummy load and measure the RF voltage across the dummy load with an
oscilloscope or an RF Probe. With an RMS reading RF Probe and a 50 ohm
dummy load, 7.07 volts is 1 watt and 10 volts is 2 watts - with an
oscilloscope (use a 10X probe), the peak to peak voltage would be 28
volts for a 2 watt signal and 20 volts for a 1 watt signal. If your
dummy load is fully enclosed, you can gain access to the center
conductor with a UHF TEE adapter.

The K3 generates a HI RFI message in the VFO B display if the level is
about 1 or 2 watts, so we can likely guess that level will cause no
harm, and it should be below the level where the COR activates.

If you have more than 2 watts from the receive antenna (from any
transmitter running at its highest power and using any TX antenna) into
a 50 ohm load, then I would recommend some secondary protection. If the
level with your highest transmit power is less than 1 watt, then I would
not worry about it.

I use a Yaesu MD-100 and a short adapter with my K3. The PTT and VOX work

If you work 40, 80, or 160M, diversity reception with a dedicated RX
antenna can be a VERY good thing, helping you hear things you otherwise
might not have heard.

If you are a DX chaser, you can listen on your TX frequency when working
split. That can help a LOT when trying to find a place where your signal
might stand out from the competition. The P3 is also quite helpful in
the same way.

If you are a contester, you can use the second RX to search for
multipliers while you're CQing (not while transmitting though).

If you work VHF (or even 10M) and are looking for band openings, you can
monitor two frequencies (on the same band) at the same time, one in each
ear (or external loudspeaker), for example, one in the CW portion, the
other on SSB. Again, the P3 is also quite helpful in the same application.

I've used my 2nd RX in all but the last application.

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd RX

2011-03-04 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
In a contest, one can work something called SO2V, where off a run frequency,
you scan the band away from your run frequency, or move it to a new spot and
pick it off while maintaining your run frequency. Not easy to do (the
distraction and mental breakdown quotient is very high for this kind of
stuff), but extremely handy if you can get your brain to do it.

You can put the other RX on another antenna and listen to other bands at the
same time, including AM broadcast or HF broadcast. I do that a lot during
the summer listening to Yankees baseball games. I will often just leave the
second RX on the other frequency. Why use this quality of RX for that
purpose? I can listen to them using SSB on a RX antenna and use fast AGC on
a pretty bad signal that would be intolerable listening AM. I set the
frequency to 880.000 kHz and the audio is perfect, no trace of Donald Duck.
It even renders music acceptably though not quite perfectly. When noisy I
narrow the bandwidth for best balance of "intelligible sound" and
signal-to-noise.

I use DDR for 160 and 80. The improvement in RX is immense and allows me to
pull out very poor signals. The spread of noise in the headphones allows me
to effectively ignore the noise.

Setting the TX in the clear with working someone split is invaluable. I
often run up the bandwidth on the second RX (listening to the split
frequency) to 2.7 kHz just to hear the range and detect the DX's pattern on
RX.

There was something else but cannot recall at the moment...

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd RX

2011-03-04 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Lee,

There are three reasons you might want the sub-RX: (1) diversity; (2)
listening to both your RX and TX frequencies when operating split; (3)
monitoring one band while you operate on the other.

The K3's sub RX has identical performance to the main RX, so it excels
at all of these applications.

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd RX

Actually there's a fourth reason. If you use QRQ CW mode (ultra-fast
break-in), you can't normally use split or RIT. But if you have the
sub receiver installed, you can transmit on VFO A and receive on VFO
B, which will achieve the same goal in many situations.

If you want a desks mic, I would recomend the Heil Gold Line GM-5. Or
the HM-10 Dual (has HC-4 and HC-5 elements). Both are reasonably
priced and have good sound. Get the Heil Desk stand with the PTT
switch and you're set.

Also, a lot of mic out there like even some from Radio Shack offer
good sound quality at even better prices, but you may still need the
Heil stand to get PTT on the base.

If you want to use a headset, check the archives for the Yamaha CM500.
It is good, and inexpensive, but it is a headphone with boom mike.

If you want to tinker, you can get electret elements from many sources
(even Radio Shack) and make a mic yourself. And it won't suffer in
sound quality. With the TX-EQ capabilities of the K3, you can make it
sound really good.  All you need it the element, some cable and
something to house the thing in.  I used a length of 1 inch copper
tube and made a screen out of brass screen.  Find a foam wind screen
and a wooden plug in the other end with a hole for the cable to exit
and a plug on the end.

I'm not aware of anyone making a desk mic stand with PTT other than Heil.

This should get you started.

Shure still makes desktop microphones.

Two that come to mind are the 550L and 552.

[Elecraft] [K3] Preferred or Popular Mic For the K3

2011-03-04 Thread Edward R. Cole
I am using the Heil HM10-5 (Has the HC-5 element) which I bought in
1998 for my FT-847. I bought the Kenwood cable for the mic (Red
color connector) which matches the K3 perfectly. I get great reports
on the sound of the radio with it running low power on my K3/10.

Rose,
I'll buy one when I get the amp. However, because my SGC-230 autotuner
can't handle the power, I probably won't buy the amp until Elecraft releases
the new autotuner and I have one of those.

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd RX

2011-03-04 Thread Igor Sokolov
And the same on HF. Working pile up is a lot easier in the contest when you
have two antennas beaming different directions and 2 RX on the same
frequency. In our case EU signals on the western antenna are in the left ear
and JA/Pacific signals are in the right ear. Since both receivers have
independent AGC strong EU signals do not offset AGS on the eastern antenna
and allow one to hear weak signals from Pacific DX stations in the pile up.

Re: [Elecraft] T1 build...

2011-03-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Ross,

You are looking too hard! Most of the Elecraft tuners use the same
technique - the selected relay is activated and the return path flows
through all the rest of the other relay coils - there is not enough
current through any one coil to activate them, and it works quite well -
one more piece of "magic" that can be done using PICs.

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd RX

2011-03-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Many Hams find value in having a good second receiver in the shack.

I'm sure the heavy-hitting contesters and dx-ers on the list here will give
you many ways they use the subrx to enhance their pursuit of the latest
elusive contact, but there's also the more basic idea of having a
world-class second receiver on the operating desk that can be used at the
same time as the main receiver.

When equipped with the KBPF3, the subrx covers the entire spectrum from 500
kHz to 30 MHz and the 6 meter bands and provides all the same advantages and
specifications as the K3's main rx.

I am curious

What is the benefit of a 2nd RX in the K3? I have tried to look for
information

Could someone enlighten me as to why one would have a 2nd RX in the K3 other

than DDR?

Some other reasons are to listen to the pile while listening to the DX station
when the DX is working split and to search the band with one receiver while
monitoring a net or waiting for a QRX to return.  Also to search and pounce
while running in a contest. Willis 'Cookie' Cooke

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Preferred or Popular Mic For the K3

2011-03-04 Thread Bill Conkling
Please, WRONG, No.

I made reference to "desk mic stands with PTT" NOT Desk mics. The point was
to source a stand for inexpensive alternatives to the expensive Heil
Goldline style mics that need a stand. Radio Shack and othes sell mics like
this for very reasonable prices but the only source of a stand for them that
has a PTT switch is the one from Heil.

There are many "deks mics" around, and most if not all can be adapted to the
K3.

Both Icom and Kenwood make desk stand mics with the PTT switch in the base.

[Elecraft] Mic for K3

2011-03-04 Thread David Dunn
I bought the standard mic from Elecraft with my K3 kit. I thought it quite
an expensive option.

It works perfectly well, but it is somewhat bulky.
The K3 has such a vast range of audio adjustment on rx and tx I have tried
many other mics on it and all work perfectly well. I am very particular
about audio quality. And do serous on air tests with other stations.
But probably 95% of my use is on CW.

As I prefer to use a headset, I bought 5 electret inserts at a rally for
one pound (for 5) and made up a boom device
These seem to be at least as good, or better than all the other mics I have
tried. so the convenience and neatness of the headset/boom has made the
standard mic almost redundant.
20 pence is my idea of good value!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 issue with Keying

2011-03-04 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Properly operated, the K3 has a pristine CW signal, using a number stream
from firmware to directly create the 15 KHz CW signal in the TX Digital to
Analog Converter. Since all amplification/conversion is linear after that,
the same signal emerges properly shaped at the antenna jack.

The K3 has a constant and well deserved reputation for excellent CW that
does not bother people even just a few hundred Hz away.

There ARE ways to make a signal from a K3 or any other properly designed
transceiver have key clicks at the antenna. They almost always involve an
amplifier. Assuming (bad word) your power supply can actually supply a
stiff 13.8 volts, a K3 with key clicks barefoot has something busted and
needs to be sent back to Elecraft to get it diagnosed and repaired.

1) Probably the worst is to try and run break-in or semi-break-in into an
amplifier whose internal relays cannot follow the speed of the CW. What
then happens is hot-switching, where the relays are making and breaking
contact during the sent signal. The extreme sharp edges of the RF made by
the hard relay contacts of the amp will be heard well above and below
signal. This is also capable of doing dreadful things to the amplifier,
including destroying tubes, pi-networks, bandswitches, relays, meters, tube
sockets, nearly anything except the input circuits and power supply.

2) The other biggie is to run 100 watts into anything other than a pair of
3-500Z or a 3CX1200A7 and let the amp ALC throttle back the K3 power on a
baud by baud basis. This will generate clicks, because the ALC *MUST*
quickly shut down power to protect tubes -- the pristine CW signal is being
chopped ASAP to keep from toasting grids and turning your expensive final
tubes into lamp fodder. DO NOT use amp ALC to set levels. Do that with the
K3 power knob to set the proper level, and set your ALC levels somewhat
above that ONLY to protect your tubes if you forget to back off going from
running 100 watts barefoot to needing 60 watts to drive an amp.

3) If you tune well off your antenna's resonance without retuning, that will
raise grid current, you will be operating your amp outside its linear zone.
This will flat-top the signal, creating sharp edges to the CW envelope that
are not there at the K3 output.

4) Aside from using an amp improperly, an amp can have a range of problems
requiring repair or final replacement that will produce key clicks from a
perfect signal on its input. These need to be separately diagnosed and
fixed on their own merit.

73, Guy.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Preferred or Popular Mic For the K3

> I'm not aware of anyone making a desk mic stand with PTT other than Heil"

That's because they spend the most money advertising to hams. It is NOT
because they are the best (they are not even close).

If you want a good PTT desk mic, you should be looking in the realm of
2-way radio and commercial sound (paging mics). Shure (based in
Evanston, IL) has been making a good variety of models of very good PTT
desk mics for at least 80 years. Turner desk mics, long discontinued,
were excellent, but are available on the used market. Astatic also made
a lot of this sort of mic, the best known being the D104 and its many
variants. Look for this stuff on the used market.
