Re: [Elecraft] mic menu selection

2011-03-21 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I played with the macro tester a bit.

Put this macro into one of the memories: I called it "SPKR+PH"

MN097;UP;MN255;

It selects the SPKR+PH menu entry (that's MN097), then it changes it with UP
(it goes between on and off with each UP or DN) and then MN255 to exit the
menu.

I'll put this into K3 Utility Help.

Danny,

The frequencies on which you can hear T1 CW information will vary from
one unit to the next because of small variations in the frequency of
the microcontroller's crystal oscillator.

Thanks for all the comments, on and off list.

I did a little tweaking and am happy with the live mic audio as I listen to

much weaker than the live mic audio. Am I missing an AF gain setting, or
something else, for the DVR?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & S9 43' Vertical

2011-03-21 Thread Vic K2VCO
Putting the tuner at the base will be much more efficient than using the
autotuner (or any
tuner) at the rig end. If the tuner is at the base you will not need the unun.

As someone mentioned there was a huge discussion of this type of antenna a few
weeks ago.
Lots of 'attitude' was displayed. My recommendation is that you should install
a ground
system of at least 16 radials perhaps 20' long each (this is a 'minimum' ground
system)
and, if possible, use a remote tuner at the antenna base.

Re: [Elecraft] T1 Feature Comment Please?

2011-03-21 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Danny,

I refer you to the T1 Owner's manual page 11 for a full explanation -
particularly the first and last paragraphs. The frequency that the INFO
report data is send will vary (and drift) due to variations in the
ceramic resonator frequency. In other words, "Always" is not possible
because of drift in the resonator - it is not a precise frequency
standard, but simply a device intended to provide a clock to the MCU.

You might design a crystal based MCU oscillator that would have a more
consistent frequency, but I doubt you could squeeze it into the T1
enclosure.

with internal dc-dc converter - runs off of 24 VDC) and the OEM version
(thin gold case, sometimes with the original 3 dB splitter still attached to
the case, no power supply). The OEM version being surplussed contains the
same GPSDO guts as the commercial version, with two exceptions: the power
connector is on the opposite side of the pwb, and one Zener diode is changed
to move the trip point for the DC Power alarm to a lower value. Also, the
newer units have a later date code Dallas Semi temp sensor that does not
report temperature in the finer steps of the earlier date codes - this is
not an issue for most folks.

The OEM units require +5 , +12, and -7 to -12 VDC at modest current
requirements. It is easy to find a surplus power supply that supports these
units and it is just as easy to roll your own. I usually have a few tested
OEM units available for sale, with or without the gold case (if you want to
build it into your own cabinet).

In addition, if you want the ultimate K3 accessory, I have a NIB Symmetricom
Starloc II Plus, GPS-disciplined Rubidium oscillator for sale.

Let me know if you want to know anything else about the Thunderbolt, or if
you want one of your own.

I have a 4:1 unun that I made from a balun kit (Amidon I think). It's wound
just like a balun, but the connections going out are slightly different.
Here's a website:

http://www.iv3sbe.webfundis.net/html/UNUN.htm

BTW, the unun works GREAT
with an end-fed wire and a well-chosen set of counterpoise wires. I get a
perfect match on 9 bands,160 - 10. The K3's ATU is magnificent.

Your antenna may match, but your radiation pattern will be poor unless you
put down radials. See the ARRL Antenna Book for lots of mind-numbing
details, or ON4UN's book for even more.

This is an awesome post, which I am gonna save. These are the conditions
for which a really cool radio should be designed. You certainly reach the
largest audience with a radio that copes with all that. The next challenge

Have you considered a K2, Chris?

It's a very capable rig, designed to take an internal battery. It's
probably less power-hungry than a K3, but I've not checked the figures.

Its one weakness, for me, has been transmit audio on SSB, although I
must admit I've not spent much time trying to optimise it as I use it
mainly for CW. The K3 wins hands-down in this respect.

If you could come up with the design you need, have a word with Rose, shown

Rose made one for me for my K2 which I've been using for SOTA summit
activations. It holds the K2, paddle, W1 wattmeter/SWR bridge, a 7 Ah
Li-ion battery, miscellaneous jumpers and adapters, and my log. Makes a
really great package, but not for checked baggage. I had her put two
pockets on the sides, and there's a big one on the back. Really nice
work, you choose from an array of fabric colors.

Rose Kopp, XYL of Ken Kopp, K0PP, makes very nice soft cases designed
for carry-on. One version of this case, which my neighbor, N3ZZ and I
bought, holds a K3 and a laptop. We also bought them with extra velcro

They are NOT designed to be checked luggage. Cost is quite reasonable,

Many members of this list have bought Rose's cases. Several are

I just bought the Pelican 1510, hard case with foam and the lid
organizer. The foam uses small blocks that you can pop out to fit most
applications. I have not tried to put the k3 and accessories in the
case yet. It has rollers and a handle and is supposed to be carry on size.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Ooof.. Update

2011-03-21 Thread Larry Kendall
Don, thanks.

I understand about the band pass LC section and that is what perplexed me.

Late last night I found and corrected a tiny solder short hidden under the
connector on the KNB2 board. Of course it had to be pins 1 & 2 and you know
what that would do.

Had to call it a night at that point per the whole work/job/employment thing
for this morning and will reinstall into the K2 & test it tonight.

If this turns out to be the "only" problem I'll be a happy Ham.

Thanks & 73.

Lance, thanks for the background.

Right now, my main goal is just to pack it in something I can carry
around with me but not necessarily on a plane (but if my setup can
serve this role, fantastic).

I guess I should be more specific about my requirements for storage
than having people shout random solutions:

- K3 unit with KAT3 (so I don't need a separate ATU, I sure hope not)
- Gamma Research HPS-1A supply
- Some portable battery supply (I have not decided yet)
- Buddistick Deluxe Package
- Power chords, feedline, MH2 mic, cables, miscellaneous smaller
items, maybe a smallish wattmeter, etc.

Future directions:
At some point, I'd like to add a Netbook with power supply in that mix
with possibly a P3 or LP-PAN. Sigh. It never ends. I already have
a large backback for computer stuff but something like the P3 or
LP-PAN would be a *nice to have* with the gear above.

The goal is to be able to pack up everything I need to deploy remotely
or bring with me on vacation (example, in the summer, I will be in
North Carolina for a week and I would like to operate. Be great if I
had some kind of bag that could help me organize everything neatly).

Hope this make sense,

Re: [Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-21 Thread Lance Collister
Hello Alexander,

This is a problem I also am currently wrestling with. The K3 (depending on
options) weighs around 12 pounds by itself. If you buy a good solid state
switching power supply such as a 300w Meanwell HRP-300-12, you can get by
adding only another 2-3 pounds if you include the power cord.

For DOMESTIC carry-on luggage, that is not so bad, and you can easily fit it in
a
suitable carry-on bag. For my last couple of DXpeditions, I lined the two
roll-on carry-on bags for my wife and I with a foam pad from backpacking trips
and
other foam pieces as shown in this photo:

http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/K3CarryOn.JPG

The amp and wattmeter are in the bag on the left. The K3, switching power
supply,
box with the PR6, and some thin odds and ends are in the bag on the right.
Note
that everything was wrapped in plastic bags to waterproof the equipment, and
carefully padded, since there were two flights in smaller planes where they had
to
be checked as baggage. I had no problems with this arrangement on two separate
DXpeditions.

HOWEVER, the total weight (including the roller-bags) of each of these was
around
25 pounds. Many international airlines only permit 15 pounds TOTAL WEIGHT for
personal carry-on luggage, and they also have much smaller acceptable
dimensions.
Since my current switching power supply and K3 already exceed 15 pounds
before
adding any packing material or a bag, this is a real challenge. The amplifier
and
wattmeter are in the same situation. Obviously, the larger switching power
supply
for the amplifier will have to continue to be shipped in a suitcase in checked
baggage.

I will probably have to invest in new MeanWell power supplies to shave off a
few
pounds, but still have the obstacle of needing to find some very durable but
lightweight carry-on bag that will provide enough protection to be able to be
checked, but still be small enough to meet the small size and weight
requirements
of new international airlines.

It probably means no roller bags at all, and use of much smaller hard sided
carry-on bags. More of the fragile equipment (wattmeter, all power supplies,
preamp, etc.) will have to go into checked baggage suitcases. All I can say is
that it doesn't take much of a case to bring your K3 up to 15 pounds and exceed
allowable international carry-on sizes!

I have seen some small cases in airports that look like they would work, but I
have not found a place to get one yet. Please keep me posted as to what you
come
up with! TNX and VY 73, Lance

Re: [Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-21 Thread Lew Phelps K6LMP
I recently acquired a padded carrying case (not hard-sided like a Pelican) that
suits my needs for carrying a K3 plus numerous accessories. It costs $21.95
from Surplus Center of Nebraska. The interior measurements are approximately 6
x 16 x 13, with 1/2" padding on all sides. It's a dark blue heavy nylon. I
can put my K3, a power supply, headset, J-38 key, breakout box, a large
external power/swr meter, cords, connectors, a Powerpole distribution box, and
other goodies into the bag, with room to spare. I wouldn't want to check the
bag as luggage without putting it inside a protective box with padding. It fits
easily into an overhead bin on a plane. It meets my needs very well, and the
the price is hard to beat. see:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Heil headset

2011-03-21 Thread Sfbonk

I'm using my old Pro Set iC (it is an electret, so I switch on power to it)
which works great with the K3. Use a foot switch into the back. I sold the Heil
iC adaptor since the mic plugs into the back panel and I use a 1/4" to
miniature adaptor on the front for the headphones. I also use a Heil desk mike
for casual operating (another electret element), and it plugs into the front
panel mic jack and I use the K3 setup to switch between front and rear mic.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Auto-Tuner Recommendations...

2011-03-21 Thread PKA
The K3 ATU is not always stopping at the optimum LC combination.

However, it does not stop too far off. In some cases (rainy weather) I have
noticed that it stops at SWR=1,4 even when there is an LC combination giving
SWR=1,0.
I don't see it as a big problem. But it is annoying when using remote control,
if the RC program is not showing SWR very well (this may be the case when using
HRD over remote desktop)

I really prefer the LDG tuners over the MFJ. I have several and they all work
well. I also have an MFJ tuner so my comparison is based on side-by-side
operation. Right now, I have the AT-600Pro in line with the K3/100 and the the
Ameritron ALS-600. I have very good results running into a 160 feet doublet fed
with good quality 300 ohm twinlead.
I have a DX Engineering 1:1 current balun inline after the tuner. This is a
very effective setup.

My new K3 works great on CW - love the way it sounds & the intuitively

connect my Heil Pro headset, with a PTT hand trigger. I see a larger stereo
plug coming from the PTT switch & a small one coming from the heaset (1

wires to the headset appear to be for the earphones (small stereo plug).

Can I use "PTT IN", "STEREO PHONES" & "MIC" on the back & just ignore the

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Ooof.. Update

2011-03-21 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Larry,

You are trying to analyze too much in the KNB2 without looking at the
schematic. The signal always passes through the Bandpass Filter. It
only goes to the amplifier to detect noise.
So check the toroids L1 and L2, C3, C4, C6, C7, R8 and R8.
The RX signal should pass through the KNB2 with only those components in
place and working.
Also check the soldering of P1 and its mating header on the K2 RF Board
= make certain pin 1 has been soldered on both.

Re: [Elecraft] Installed K3EXREF

2011-03-21 Thread George Dubovsky
List,

I know a thing or three about those Trimble T'bolts; I am a design engineer
for the company that made the (previous generation) equipment that is now
being surplussed in several parts of the world. There is no domestic or
Chinese thunderbolt; there is the commercial version (silver and red case
with internal dc-dc converter - runs off of 24 VDC) and the OEM version

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Heil headset

2011-03-21 Thread nr4c
 Hi, Kate.

You have two choices for this. One, as you have already figured, plug
the mic into the MIC on the back, Phones into the PHONES on the back,
and get an adapter to adapt the 1/4 inch PTT plug on the headset to the
RCA plug on the back of the K3.

The other approach is to get a Kenwood headset adapter from Heil, and
use it with the front panel 8-pin connector, and the phones jack on the
front panel (with maybe the appropriate adapter 1/8 stereo to 1/4 inch
stereo). Note that K3 headphones AND speaker out is STEREO. Do NOT plug
a MONO plug into the SPEAKER OUT jack on the rear of the K3. Don't ask
 me how I know this.

FYI: The K3 is designed to accommodate a built-in Sub-Receiver and
normally places main receiver audio mostly in the left ear. And, when
you add the second receiver, you hear the audio in the right ear. Works
 very well.

I hope you enjoy your K3 as much as I've enjoyed mine.

 Good luck

Well, here's one solution. I got a 1/4" plug and a little red pushbutton
momentary-contact switch (total cost at Gateway Electronics, 3 bucks). The
switch is round and has the same diameter as the plug housing. Sawed about
1/2" off the top of the plug housing , wired the switch to do PTT, epoxied
it in line with the housing, and shrank some heat-shrink tubing over the
joint. It looks like a professional piece of gear and fits one's hand
perfectly.

[Elecraft] Installed K3EXREF

2011-03-21 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Edward,

Just a quick question.  Would the existing K3 + TCXO3-1 + K144V be good enough
for casual SSB operation in 2m?  How would this combination be compared with
modern V/U radio equipped with OCXO such as Icom IC9100 in terms of frequency
stability in 2 m ?

Can I understand that K3EXPEF is only required for GHz operation?

Thanks for your advice in advance.
 cheers,

Johnny VR2XMC

主題: [Elecraft] Installed K3EXREF

Matt,

I agree that the biggest challenge is getting UHF and mw LO's to be
on frequency.  Due to the multiplication of the LO, any inaccuracy or
instability is magnified.  But it is just as important that the IF
radio used with those transverters have good frequency
characteristics as they are translated up to the operating frequency.

Another little annoyance is operating on nets where stations are all
over the place in frequency.  As NC it is tough to keep tuning each
offset out in a quick paced round table style net.  I host a 2m-SSB
net where a couple stations insist on being 100-Hz low (they maintain
their radio dial says they are "on-freq").  With the K3EXREF and a
PLL locked transverter I can be assured that my frequency is correct.

Also, operating any mode that has a high duty cycle of key-down
causes temperature related drift.  K3EXREF will solve that.  The
K3EXREF is both accurate and stabile in freq.

Most of the applications where "extreme accuracy" is really needed are
transverters at microwave freqs.  That is a lot of the feedback
received here.  I believe that.  It makes the most sense.

A couple of PPM is plenty good for HF, imho.  But there are those of
us that have the frequency fetish.  See the FMT for example.  Dunno
how many OO's have the capability to measure overall output to within
a few Hz, nor how many can measure amplitudes to required levels of
suppression.  There must be some, and some are K3 owners.

I got cited once, in 1973 by the FCC monitoring station in Kingsville,
TX, when my dial marker was off by about 1 KHz.  With the K3, nothing
like that is a worry.  But the K3EXREF makes it a certainty that you
will have no excuse

Phil came back to my K3/10 right away on 14.317. I did have a
