Re: [Elecraft] WWV-driven station clock

2011-06-02 Thread juergen
Hi

I seem to recall that there was a discussion some time back about adding this
feature to the K3's firmware. The K3 would sync to a WWV broadcast on shortwave
and correct the clock just like the famous Heathkit WWV clock.

I have 2 of the original Heathkit clocks, one I use and one is new in the box.
I have been offered goldmines for these clocks. I personally dont understand
why they are still so sort after when any GPS receiver can do the same job.

There are many Nixie clocks sold on Ebpay with GPS sync. The blue VFD Nixie
clocks look very nice.

What a great idea! It could even output a 10MHz frequency reference for use
with the K3XREF. But I hope they make it so it works with something we can
use over here. WWV is not a good enough signal to be reliable.

But shifting the LO injection frequency would worsen the carrier
suppression. I used to spend a lot of time fiddling with analog rigs trying
to do the same thing. Got it sounding nice, then noticed that when I keyed
the mic the output meter was showing a reading even though there was no
modulation. :( I run my K3 in SSB with the filter centered on 1.4kHz and it
sounds great to me.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: WWV-driven station clock that displays zulu time

2011-06-02 Thread Charles R Tropp
The problem with the La Crosse clocks and all "atomic" clocks is that if
you have a computer near your operating position (as most of us have
these days), the clock must be at least 6 feet away (as per the
instructions that come with the clock) otherwise there will be no
reception of the WWVB signals. That means you will need to get a wall
mounted clock that is large enough for you to see and it probably should
be mounted on a wall that is facing the WWVB signal you are trying to
receive for best reception of the WWVB signals which is hit or miss most
nights. (e.g. West if you are East of Ft Collins, Colorado). The model
WS-8157U-IT can be set to UTC if you wish.

Re: [Elecraft] Clock Sync (interval adjust Windows 7)

2011-06-02 Thread Twan at pa0kv.nl
*Adjust Clock Sync Interval (windows 7) *

The time interval of the update is set at 7 days. This can be changed in
the registry:

   1. Start the *Registry Editor*
   2. Go to *HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services
  \ W32Time \ TimeProviders \ NtpClient \*
   3. Double-click the *SpecialPollInterval* value, and change the Base
of the *Value data* to *Decimal*
   4. Now change the *Value data* to the time interval you desire,
noting that the time is given in seconds (so for 1 day the value
  would be *86400*,
while the default (7 days) is *604800*
   5. Close the registry editor

I set my Windows 7 interval at 3600 (1 hour).

Re: [Elecraft] K-3 with High Current Problem on 20 meters

2011-06-02 Thread JAMES ROGERS

My K3 exhibits the same problem on 20M. I have to reduce power down to 90W to
run without the Hi Current warning with an antenna match of 1.1:1. All other
bands, no problem. I upgraded from a 30A switcher to a 35A linear supply to see
if that helped and there was no appreciable difference. I do run my station
power through a RigRunner for power distribution. I am considering building a
properly fused cable and trying a direct connection to the power supply,
although the voltage sag on key down appears to be only about 0.8VDC.

[Elecraft] OT Linux for Elecraft K3 use - Which Distribution to use?

2011-06-02 Thread Jeff Cochrane
Hi everyone,
I would like some advice please, from the Linux / Wine users amongst us.

Question: Which Linux distribution to use and why?
My reason for asking is the impending demise in support for Win XP from
Microsoft and my lack of trust in Windows 7 (Or any other version of Windows
for that matter) to do what I want, when I want it to. :-)

I have some experience with Linux and Unix both (From operating an IRLP node
+ other stuff earlier on in my career) but with so many distributions
available nowadays, it's a bit daunting.

What I want to be able to do is to run a logging program, update & control
my K3 and do other general around the shack work.
The computers are not what you would call 'powerhouses', they are an Intel
466MHz Celeron powered Toshiba laptop & an Intel Atom powered netbook.
Hopefully I can get some useful advice on the list from those of you "in the
know"

Thanks to all in advance for your replies,

Dick,

I have a similar problem on 20 meters, and (in my case) it seems to be
antenna related (although the swr is below 1.5:1). When I check it on a

Re: [Elecraft] OT Linux for Elecraft K3 use - Which Distribution to use?

2011-06-02 Thread R. Kevin Stover
For ease of install you can't beat the Debian based distro Ubuntu.
I'd suggest a really lightweight desktop manager like Fluxbox, XFCE, or
the like because you don't have the horsepower to run Gnome or KDE.

I run Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 with an XFCE desktop manager.
For rig control your going to need Hamlib.
For logging I use CQRLog (MySQL database back end).
For digimodes I use FLDigi.
The nice thing about both of those packages is that they support the
K1EL winkeyer. My version is the USB.

I do run Windows (XP and 7) in virtual sessions on my machine using
Oracle Virtualbox because I have to support them professionally. The
only thing keeping me from dumping windows totally is my work and a
really good contesing app for Linux. Yes, I know about TLF but it can't
compete with N1MM.

There is a Linux version of the K3 utility you should be able to
get to from the Elecraft website.

You shouldn't have many hardware issues because the laptop is old
enough to be fully supported from that point of view. Even on cutting
edge hardware Linux is a whole lot better than it used to be.

Jeff,
I've been on-and-off Linux for years, and I'm convinced the Apple Mac
OS-X is the most robust computing solution for no-hassle daily
operations. I gave up on Windows, although I have Win-7 running
successfully as a Virtual Machine on my Mac Pro.

See http://wilcoxengineering.com/projects/amateur-projects/44-psk31-k2
... shows how my MacBook Pro runs with my K2. I don't happen to do much
with logging programs, but even that small laptop is up to a lot of
activity.

There's a lot of ham software available for the Mac. If I must run a
Windows application, I do it in the Win-7 VM.

Re: [Elecraft] K-3 with High Current Problem on 20 meters

2011-06-02 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
I had the same problem on 10m.

My power supply ( 30A max ) had a voltage drop from 13.8V to 12.5V on 100W
output. I was instructed by Elecraft to " increase the power supply voltage
to 14.0 to 14.5VDC under no load, and make sure the is as direct of
connection as possible between the power supply " Then my power supply
voltage was dropping from 14.5V to 13.8V ( looking from K3 DC voltage meter
)

This cured my problem at least in home use.

[Elecraft] K3 8 pin mic wiring to avoid "pin 1" problems...how best to...??

2011-06-02 Thread VK7JB
Hello Group,

I'm rewiring an 8 pin mic connector FROM an Icom configuration TO a K3

Wiring the Mic + and PTT lines is straight forward. But how best to wire
the PTT GND, Mic - and Cable shield connections is bothering me.

I'd like to wire the Mic - and cable shield to avoid the risk of "pin 1"
problems and RFI etc, but if I interpret the schematic and mic pinout info
for the K3 correctly, front panel mic pins 7 & 8 are wired in common with
the chassis.

So, am I correct in understanding that on the K3, there's no way of
seprating Mic-, PTT GND and cable shield/chassis - ie they're all bonded in
common?

If this is correct, should I simply wire PTT GND to pin 7 and Mic- and
cable shield to pin 8. (But they are all connected together in the rig).

In other words, is this wiring pinout the most appropriate?

Pin 1 > Mic +
Pin 2 > PTT
Pin 7 > PTT GND
Pin 8 > Mic - and cable shield.
(pin 7 and 8 being bonded internally anyway)

Thanks for any clarification. It's possible I'm over-thinking this! :)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 8 pin mic wiring to avoid "pin 1" problems...how best to...??

2011-06-02 Thread nr4c
I've wired several K3, Kenwood and ICOM mics and Kenwood and K3 are
very similar. I think you'll find that the mic and PTT are the same,
with mic being on Pin 1 and 7, PTT on 2 and 8. Cable shield is usually
tied to pin 8 as well.

Mike,

Display the clock, click "display time and date settings," select
the "Additional Clocks" tab," Check the "Show this clock" for the
first additional clock, Select "(GMT) Coordinated Universal Time"

Both Vista and Windows 7 allow for up to two additional clocks. The

Re: [Elecraft] OT: WWV-driven station clock that displays zulu time

2011-06-02 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
As with all things RF, "your mileage may vary".

I have a wall-type clock I picked up at Dayton a year or so ago, in the
bargain pile in the flea market for $10 (brand name unknown, but it has
a sticker on the back that says "Made in China"). Works fine, until you
get a marginal signal from WWVB (which is on 60 kHz, by the way -- check
out the WWVB web site [http://www.nist.gov/pml/div688/grp40/wwvb.cfm] to
see how they pump out a lot of power out on 60 kHz, also the format of
the timing signals, which are set at the rate of 1 bit per second).
Apparently some of the chip sets don't bother to check the error bits,
and will set weird times and dates if a bit gets lost here or there. I
keep this particular clock in my office on top of the cube cabinet so it
at least has a clear view west over the cube farms out the other side of
the building, and sometimes in the morning when I come in, it will be
showing a completely wrong date or some odd time. Placing it in the
nearby east-facing window across the aisle and forcing a synchronization
corrects it.

I also have a Citizen 'atomic' watch that works quite well at home at
night on the dresser (the WWVB 'atomic' clocks auto-sync at 2 or 3 in
the morning local time to take advantage of the enhanced night-time
propagation on 60 kHz), as long as I keep it away a foot or so from my
CDMA-based Sprint cell phone. Otherwise, emissions from the phone
charging circuitry seem to interfere with it.

I would certainly welcome something that would increase the accuracy of
the clock in the K3. It tends to wander quite a bit, and it's a hassle
to have to dump all the various programs I have talking to the K3 over
the serial port via Larry's (N8LP) excellent bridge program, so I can
run the K3 utility to synchronize the K3 clock to the computer clock.
You'd think that after spending thousands of dollars on a rig like the
K3, that it would at least keep good time. 8-p

BTW, that last statement is what MY customers tell me about MY product
8-) (and no, it's main purpose in life is NOT to keep good time,
either). I just couldn't resist using that argument on someone else.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 8 pin mic wiring to avoid "pin 1" problems...how best to...??

2011-06-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
The "pin 1" problem is not a function of the cable wiring, but of the
equipment that it plugs to.
To avoid a pin 1 problem, the shield path for the connector should be
connected to the equipment enclosure. That was easy when we had
connectors that mounted on the enclosure, but becomes difficult without
extra measures if the connector is mounted to a PC board instead of to
the enclosure.

Connect the PTT return and the AF return (mic shield) to pins 7 and 8,
and if there is an overall cable shield, it would best be connected to
the shell of the mic plug.
That is about all you can do.

I agree with Jim's and Julian's comments and would dearly love such
a frequency standard for in-house recalibration of the used
ex-professional testgear I occasionally pick up.

As someone said, the atomic clock market is saturated and who could
disagree, however, I don't see any clocks, tied to frequency standard
transmissions, that offer a sub-standard output.

Hmm! The ability to select the monitored source (and maybe auto-QSY
if signal is lost, plus the ability to display GMT as well as local time,
together with selectable 10, 5 and 1MHz outputs.

Surely, something of this nature would appeal to a wider audience than
Elecraft users alone?

I can recommend XFCE as a good desktop. It is easily installed with the
Ubuntu distribution as Xubuntu which is simply a much lighter
installation than the standard Ubuntu with no loss of functionality. It
is light enough that I have run it from a 4 GB thumb drive when on the
road with the work laptop.

More precisely, version 1.2.13 or later. I did a lot of work with the
K3 support that made it into that version so the K3 is much better
supported. There are still some issues with Fldigi that I have found
where if one changes band and mode at once from a bookmark that the mode
is changed first and then the frequency is changed. That results in the
mode being changed on the first band and then it being whatever was last
used on the target band. I haven't brought that issue up with W1HKJ
yet, however, as he has a more pressing need.

I have the Master Keyer 1 that supports K1EL protocol. So far, so good.

The latest version does seem to work well. One just needs to be sure to
have the curl package installed for querying of firmware updates to
work.

I am currently running Linux Ubuntu 10.10 and CQRLOG on my Acer 5742Z
laptop in the shack. CQRLOG is fully integrated with the K3 and
certainly makes DX chasing a lot easier. I recently demonstrated the
setup at my radio club when my friend John G3BFP (FOC) nabbed a Russian
op who was in Taiwan on 20m. The antenna was a bit of wire up a nearby
flagpole. I doubt if we would have found him without the help of CQRLOG.

I have not used Microsoft Windows for the last twelve years and the
Linux GUI has improved considerably in that time.

The current setup is the best operating system and the best logging
program that I have experienced and it is all free of cost.
Never had a virus of any kind since leaving Windows behind :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KX-3 PTO tuning

2011-06-02 Thread John Ragle
Bob...

I don't believe the knob connects to a PTO...it is probably just a
rotation sensor. But more to the point, I have had both a K2 and a K3,
and in both cases the main tuning (and the B tuning) has been absolutely
as smooth as velvet with no noise whatever. I think something is wrong
at your installation.

[Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Ray Spreadbury
I am intrigued, I've noticed that when various Elecraft rigs are offered for
private sale on this forum they invariably say " Continental USA" only.

Why...?

We Europeans also have PayPal, Visa, Bank Transfers etc etc so what's the
problem please?

I just bought a kit & accessories direct from Elecraft 2 weeks ago, it was
delivered within 7 days and they didn't have a problem with selling to
Europe.

Just interested .

Like you I didn't want to continue with windoze further than Xp so I
installed ubuntu desktop. I also have an Ubuntu server so it was a
useful learning experience.
As an assembler and C++ programmer, I loved the way everything is logged
an can be reduce down to command line and batch files.
Stability was excellent and forum support is good.
BUT one day I installed a new video driver and all hell broke loose. Now
wont boot up and on investigation I think I have to re-build my kernel.
I have no idea, as I'm not a Linux expert. It iust broke down before I
was good enough to fix it.
Ive checked forums, not much help.
Linux experts are harder to find in my area, so I had, reluctantly move
back to XP.
Luckily I'd left it intact on a separate partition.

This sort of thing happens with windows but as I've used it for nearly
20 years i know a lot of the tricks and fixes, not to Linux.

Bill,
Go to the Digital Confections website:

http://digitalconfections.com/

Click on Products, then iSDR. The program is described in some detail there.
It comes with a "canned" sound file you can play back to get the feel for
tuning, etc. To listen to "live" radio, you will need the appropriate audio
input hardware. Some suggestions are on the website also. There is a Yahoo
group for users of iSDR as well.

The Atom will do fine with Ubuntu 10.04. fldigi runs on all the major

[Elecraft] K3 with MFJ Bias Tee

2011-06-02 Thread Franki ON5ZO
Hello folks

I want to switch an A/B relay remotely by applying 12V through the coax. I
have a pair of MFJ bias tees for that, never used before.

When I apply the 12V and measure with my DVM on the 'RF only' coax terminal,
there is some diminishing DC voltage for a brief period, say about 2 seconds
(DVM not really fast). I assume this is the DC blocking (series) capacitor
loading or discharging (when removing the 12V).

Should I worry about this? Can this hurt the K3 in any way? Or can I just go
along? Better safe than sorry...

[Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Rose

Payment certainly isn't a problem with PayPal, but
without a PayPal account it can be problematic.
Foreign ... to the US ... money orders or even bank
checks are extremely difficult to process. For example,
a check drawn on a Panama bank would have cost
$75 to deposit into her account.

It's also likely related to a general lack of knowledge
about overseas packaging and how to fill out the
customs forms. The blanks on the forms are small
and difficult to write in. There are two forms to be
used, depending on the size of the package and a
few other variables.

I do the shipping for Rose and she receives orders
from all over the world, so I've become reasonably
familiar with the procedure, but it's still a "task".

The average transit time seems to be from two to as
much as four weeks. Israel is the exception. It can take
several months for a package to be delivered there.

Probably more than you wanted to know ...

Re: [Elecraft] [KX-3] knob height

2011-06-02 Thread Bruce Beford
I did not go to Dayton, so I have not yet seen and held the KX3. So, my
thoughts are based upon photos, videos, descriptions by Wayne and Eric, and
personal experience with other equipment.

One of the biggest complaints about compact radios is always control size
and spacing. As I look at the KX3, it is apparent to me that a lot of
thought has gone into both on this rig. I have read other people offer the
suggestion that a "thinner" knob might be better. I disagree. If the tuning
knob were reduced in height, then the other control encoder knobs would
similarly have to be shortened. Otherwise, one would be bumping into those
knobs while tuning. Shorter knobs all around would then put you right back
into the poor ergonomics situation.

I, for one, have never really gotten used to using a finger dimple for
tuning. I usually end up with my forefinger on the outside edge of the
tuning knob, and twirl the VFO that way. This would be more difficult with a
lower knob.

There is of course a long history of Amateur's personalizing their rigs.
>From depleted uranium tuning knobs for a heavier feel, to broccoli bands for
that splash of color. My K2 has a Yaesu knob on it, my K1, KX1, and K3 are

I'll take my KX3 straight up, please.

The problem, generally speaking, is ignorance. In our case, sellers
seem to be completely unaware that Alaska and Hawaii are part of the 50
states. They think we are a foreign country. Some of them don't even
understand that we use the same money! We have all the same services,
the post office goes everywhere, standard US banks, Paypal, etc.
Fedex and UPS have service to most locations (not so much in the true
bush) including both air and ground delivery.

It is actually easier to convince some people that I live in a 2-story
igloo and mush a dog team to work, which they love to believe
:-) than the real facts, which are that I live in a 4200 Sq
Ft home of standard frame construction and drive an Audi A8 on the
freeway when I go shopping.OK, the A8 is 12 years old, but still . .
. Heck, we got satellite TV , Starbucks, Gap stores, TGI Fridays, an
IMAX theatre, and even a Costco store or three.

Some also had a moveable additional smaller hour hand that could be

I would guess not. Such clocks with U.S. Maritime Commission

"Upgrading" the works would impact the collector value adversely,
so that becomes part of the cost.

I can't get sound to work using Ubuntu 8.10. It worked when Ubuntu was

dual-boot machine and the sound works fine under Windows XP.

Any ideas?

Please reply off-list since this is so far off-topic.

Shipping via the US Postal Service is not something that many of us
would choose to do, especially with something as delicate and valuable
as a ham transceiver. That's a big part of why UPS and Fed Ex exist.

In my case, the major reason I don't want to sell internationally is the
matter of customs and duties, with the associated paperwork. Here it's
mostly ignorance of what is needed, what the procedures are, etc. I
might look at it differently with a ham I knew as the buyer. Nothing
parochial beyond ignorance. :)

Both my K2 and K3's tuning knobs are the proverbial

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Audio output

2011-06-02 Thread Rich - K1HTV
Jim,
I can see that magnetic fields in a vehicle could cause problems with a
microphone, as the output level is in the -50dBm range and is much more
susceptible to it . Using equipment like the KX3 at consumer line level (-20dBm)
there would much less of a problem with magnetic fields, so a less expensive,
unshielded in-line transformer would probably work just fine.

Yes -- IF the transformer did not pick up magnetic fields from the vehicle's
systems. I saw that when doing testing of some pro mics for RFI in a Volvo S80
-- the output transformer in the mic was not shielded, and picked up trash.
That would be fixed with a transformer that has a mu-metal shield, but shielded
transformers are expensive.

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Doug Turnbull
I have a foot in both camps living permanently in EI land since 1973 but
visiting W land and my family every summer. Most US hams would have no
idea what description or export numbers to put on a parcel of value being
sent to the EU let alone other nations. Many W, VE would continue to feel
a certain obligation once the radio was shipped and the uncertainty is not
something they want to take on. If you are fortunate enough to have a US
friend to visit ship the radio to them and pick it up on your next visit.
Of course you then have to deal with customs in the airport but you can have
your receipts with you and probably will not have too much trouble.

My personal experience with USPS is good having just received a second K3
from Elecraft in less than a weeks time though in this case I needed to use
a customs clearance service and UPS seems to do this for you automatically.
Small lower value parcels sometimes come though without any duty or even VAT
being charged but this is just luck!

I may be wrong but it seems to me that ordering direct from Elecraft is
still less expensive than purchasing other radios direct from distributors
within the EU. It is handy to be able to purchase in kit form as this
apparently means that the radio is duty free though subject to VAT. A
friend EI2JD just helped another EI get his duty back on a built ham radio
so apparently at least for EI it is possible to obtain built ham radios in
this part of EU without duty and I would suspect this applies for the whole
of the EU.

The kits are of course a bit less expensive and thus less VAT is due on
them. You might get a couple of filters without duty or VAT if shipped in
a small package but this will of course vary with the officiousness of the
carrier and country. I would expect either FedEx or UPS to always make
full charges.

Elecraft has an advantage in that it uses modular build so if you can locate
a fault to a module it is possible to just post the module back to Elecraft.
Another advantage of kits is that you are more adept at taking out modules
if needs be though so far there have been no problems here.

This is just my experience and it may change at any time.

Re: [Elecraft] Clock Sync and JT65A

2011-06-02 Thread Rich - K1HTV
Jim,
If you want to try JT65A on the Magic Band, the agreed upon calling frequency
is 50.276 MHz. Almost all 6M JT65 signals that I've seen have been using JT65A.
Congrats on taking the first step working this mode.

I have found that on the super weak signals (less -20dB), stronger signals in a
2.5KHz pass band can push already weak signals farther into the noise to the
point that they can not be copied. That's where the 3M's Hi-Cut and Lo-Cut
controls come in handy. If you view a very weak trace on the JT65HF waterfall in
the presence of loud (0 to -5 dB) signals, then tighten the filters you will see
the weaker trace improve (get thicker).

I only wish that the K3 filter (Hi, Low and BW) adjustment increment could be
reduced from the present 100Hz to 50Hz or even 25Hz. This would allow the
attenuation of QRM from very loud signals that are very near in frequency to
very weak ones without affecting the weak signal's data.

I hope that this suggestion could be considered in a future K3 firmware update.

Have fun with JT65 as you watch the paint dry :-).

For many years, I've used a clock setting program distributed by NIST called
nisttime. It can use NTP. Google to find it. Free download from nist.gov It
can be set to do a re-sync as often as you like. I don't know how good it is at
compensating for network delays, but it thinks its setting the clock to an
accuracy of tens of msec. To get that level of accuracy you need to use it 2-3
times in succession.

All this talk about WSPR and JT65 motivated me to download, install, and study
the doc for both Joe Taylor's software and W6CQZ's HF version.
Made my first contacts last night on 10139 kHz with VK and ZL running about 25W
to the K3 and an 80M dipole. A JT65 contact is sorta like watching paint dry,
but I couldn't even hear the ZL that I worked, and there was a lot of other
activity within the passband that the software worked around. I'm convinced
that the W6CQZ version is the way to go for HF work.

Next step is to figure out how to use JT65A during 6M openings. Is there a
calling frequency where everyone sets up shop on 6M in North
America? Which modulation scheme(s) are most used for E-skip?

When I sent a rig to Australia I was told by the USPS that the insurance I had

That is the only package I have sent overseas so I don't know about UPS or

A moment of silencea part of history that few of today's

The clock that I was referring to is the wall-sized replica
  using a quartz mechanism - a $25 product - not the mechanical
clock that is easily worth several hundred as a collector's
  item.

I wish that I could have had that done also but it was not

No doubt - but accurate time is essential when using Elecraft

I've shipped to many other countries, not any where the number of countries,
nor item shipped as Elecraft does, however, one strong deterrant is having to
deal with lost, strayed, or undelivered items. Months of time and many hours of
effort, will be spent, in an attempt to correct, or find the reason for
non-delivery. Not to mention that insurance nor delivery tracking is available
into many countries. And in some countries, mail theft happens, check on
sending qsl cards to and from
I'm just elated that I'm not in charge of shipping for Elecraft.
Shipping international is simply a different set of rules, and must be
managed differently than the local, normal mailings.

has to be connected to the TX INIHIBIT of Station Master.
I read page 19 of K3 Manual that says:
"An external 2.2 to 10 K pull-up resistor (to 5VDC) is required".

Well that is NOT very clear to me.(perhaps I am to old...Hi), could some
more clever explain better how to do it or a small schematic will be
appreciated as example where is the 5VDC ???

I thank you in advance for help and assistance on interpretation..

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
It is not necessarily more expensive to ship USPS Priority Mail to AK
and HI. If the parcel is lightweight, use regular Priority Mail, and if
it is heavy, use Priority Mail Flat Rate - no change in the price no
matter what the shipping zone. Weigh the package and go to www.USPS.com
and obtain the amount for each option - it is not complicated at all.

The biggest problem with overseas US Mail shipments is the limit each
country places on insurance. As I recall, the maximum insurance I can
use to Canada is $700, and several other countries are substantially
lower. If the parcel has substantial value, use UPS, FedEx or DHL.
Most shipping centers will assist with the customs forms,

For ham radio purposes, using HF WWV/WWVH may be acceptable to
some, but precision frequency standards no longer use it. At
10 MHz, a one-second measurement can only yield an accuracy of
1 part per million (10 e-6) - one Hz per MHz - which may be
great for ham radio but is insufficient for today's communication
timing requirements. The concept of the HF "Standard Frequency"
station was great for pre-1960s technology.

That's why WWVB (and WWVL in its time) were put on the air.
The ultimate, of course, is a cesium or rubidium standard (1980
technology) having 10 e-9 or better accuracy.

  All it takes is money.

Re: [Elecraft] K3+ Station Master

2011-06-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Natale,

A "pull-up" resistor is normally located at the end of the signal path
that contains the receiver (in the case of the TX INH, the K3 end is the
driver for the circuit).

The resistor "raises" the level on the line - rather than just allowing
the line to float to any voltage.
When the driver is not conducting, the pull-up resistor assures that the
voltage level at the receiver will be close to 5 volts, and then when
the driver conducts, the voltage at the receiver end will go close to zero.

The function is the same as a collector resistor in a normal transistor
driver. For digital logic, when the signal is sent over a line between
two units, it is common to put that resistor at the furtherest receiver
location rather than at the driver - that reduces noise pickup on the
line - not normally a problem for short lines, but always a possibility
with longer runs, or on lines with multiple receivers.

The voltage is supplied by the receiver at the far end of the line. and
must conform to the requirements of the driver in the K3 (not usually a
problem with 5 volt logic).

In the case of the shared functions for that K3 ACC pin, it would not
work properly in some cases if the resistor were located in the K3.

"Receiver" in this context is not a radio receiver, but a digital logic
circuit.

Hello all,

today I was on 6 meters doing qso's, all went fine with antenna, a mobil
one. Sudenly I saw that SWR was increasing a lot, around 3:0, full
scale, and stoped TX. Pressed ATU TUNE botton but SWR was always high,
so I came home.

Applied my dummyload and all is fine in all bands except 6 meters, even
with Transmitter Gain Calibration test it fails because of high swr on 6
meters:

Calibrating at 24,930 MHz
StopTune: Unexpected response 'TQ1;' to ''. State 77. Retrying
Calibrating at 29,000 MHz
StopTune: Unexpected response 'TQ1;' to ''. State 77. Retrying
Calibrating at 52,000 MHz
SWR 7.3:1 is too high for calibration
Verify that a dummy load is attached to AN1;

Dummy load is attached to AN1 I can confirm it.

Any help will be welcome here.

Best 73 to all.

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Doug Turnbull
Eric,
I believe that insurance does cover packages shipped to the EU, African
countries may be more risky perhaps because of poverty or corruption.
Having said this your point is that made by others that the average guy just
does not know the rules nor codes for international shipping of expensive
radio equipment. This might make a useful article for QST but most people
would be bored by the topic. It is generally the overseas operators who
suffer as the US is a large market with attractive prices for radio gear, in
Europe we envy the QST prices.

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Ray,

Paperwork is not the problem. If you pay for the shipment on-line you can
fill out the simple paperwork there as well. The real problems with
international shipments are cost and insurability.

USPS is reasonable if you can ship by International First Class Mail.
Unfortunately you can't purchase insurance so this not good for an expensive
item. You can send it as Registered which is highly reliable within the USA
but once it leaves our air space all bets are off. I shipped a 3 pound ebay
item (value $250) to Israel with registration and it had not arrived after a
month. I started a trace 2 months ago and still have not heard any results.
So I had to reimburse the buyer and if the trace comes back as lost I
"might" be able to collect a small amount of money. I'm not holding my
breath.

You can use USPS International Priority Mail but the limit of insurance is
only $650. Not good enough for an amateur rig. And then if it isn't
delivered how easy will it be to collect the insurance??? And how long will
it take to trace the shipment before they settle the claim??? The buyer will
want his money back right away.

The best USPS has to offer is Global Express Guaranteed. It has a $2500
insurance limit. I priced up a 10 pound package to the UK with $2000
insurance and the shipping cost is $155.

UPS is probably the most reliable service since they have their own people
at the delivery end but the cost will be higher still. The same 10 pound
package in a 12 x 12 x 12 inch box, insured at $2000, would cost $224 to
ship to the UK.

Is it worth the hassle when there are buyers in the US? I don't think so.

73,
Mike K2MK

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] PDF manuals on iBooks

2011-06-02 Thread Mike KS7D
I have the same problem, but not with all the Elecraft manuals. I notice it
with the P3 manual but not the K3 manual. It seems to be a problem with iBooks,
as the images are fine in Adobe PDF reader.

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread w5ov
As one who ships expensive amateur equipment everywhere around the globe
on a daily basis as my job, I have a couple of comments.

First, using Priority Mail to KH6 or KL7 costs the same as to any other
U.S. destination - so the assertion that it costs more to ship there *via
the post office* is not true.

Second, the best service to use from the Post Office for international
shipping is called "Express Mail International". It is still called "EMS"
in many other countries. The insurance amount varies depending on what
country you are shipping to. The tracking for this service is about the
best you can get from the Post Office. It ain't great, but it's the best
they offer.

You do not have to pay for the shipment online but you can still fill out
the customs paperwork on line. I highly recommend this. It saves time at
the Post Office as the clerk will not have to type all of the information
about your shipment. It creates 5 copies of the customs form. Take all 5
with you, cut the page where they tell you to - sign and date all 5
copies.

They scan a bar code on the customs forms you printed at home, and the
data populates their screen. You will need to fill out the red/white/blue
Express Mail label which you can get at the Post Office. This is nothing
more than names and addresses.

Most clerks at the Post Office will help you complete the forms. Honestly,
this should not present anyone here with any difficulty whatsoever.

Without question, UPS Express Saver service is the best way to go. The
cost will be higher, but you get real tracking, real insurance and they
deliver within 2 or 3 business days most anywhere in the world. You can
create shipments on the UPS.com website and check rates. Expedited service
is slightly lower cost, but can take up to a week or so to get delivery.
The term "expedited" is a misnomer as the truth is that it means
not-expedited.

USPS Insurance limits vary depending on country. Some are as high as
$5000 and in other cases insurance is not available. The amount of
available insurance is based on the value that the destination country
will insure.

In any case, it's nearly impossible to collect on the insurance as the
USPS claims people will do everything they can - including lying about
import restrictions and improperly classifying shipments - in order to
reject claims. They are only marginally better than insurance from UPS
or FedEx, in my experience.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] PDF manuals on iBooks

2011-06-02 Thread Craig D. Smith
I'm a novice in this area, so I just offer this up as a possibility.
Haven't tried downloading any of the Elecraft manuals into my IPad, but have
loaded public domain books from Gutenberg. In reading about how to do this
I found that the EBF (electronic book format) strips all graphics and only
leaves words. That is fine for what I wanted, but for a manual you would
certainly want the graphics. Was there some kind of format choice when you
loaded the pdf manual into iBooks? If so, selecting EBF isn't probably a
good choice. I'm also interested in the answer to this as I also want to
eventually put my Elecraft manuals into my Ipad.

An external amp in a clamp-on case that fits on the bottom might be a good
compromise.
However, the Pennywhistle isn't enough. You also need their Transmit
Bandpass filters (http://www.tapr.org/kits_alex.html) or perhaps K5OOR's
http://site.hfprojectsyahoo.com/low_pass_filters
So a box with the amp, the filters, and the battery starts to get a little
bulky, not to mention an ATU.

You can avoid the ATU if you can figure out how to tap into the KX3 ATU
input. I suspect if there's enough clamor it could be made to work at 3dB
more input than it's used to.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Build

2011-06-02 Thread Ed Muns
I built up a KPA500 kit last night and thought people might want to hear
about it, especially those who are eagerly awaiting their own KPA500 kit.

Although I was told the assembly should take a couple hours, I spent 5.5
hours, going somewhat slowly and taking notes for feedback to Elecraft:

1.5 hours - parts inventory
2 hours - cabinet and power supply assembly
2 hours - RF module, front panel and button up

There were some trivial details to clean up and they are worked out now for
future kit shipments. There are a lot of screws, washers and such! Much
more than I realized having only seen assembled units previously. The
assembly manual is excellent and with every new Elecraft product I am still
stunned at how well everything fits together. Ron anticipates questions
that might arise at various points and heads them off with easily readable
explanations along the way. It was the typical enjoyable and satisfying
Elecraft kit experience with the only regret that it was over so soon.

This is yet another exceptional design and execution of a top-end product by
the company. "500 watts" is a very conservative spec. The amp loafs at
this power level and beyond. Instant on, no tuning (that was apparent to
me), totally quiet, seldom any fan movement, exceptional integration with
the K3, same easy firmware updating, etc. Change bands on either the K3 or
the KPA500 and the other follows immediately. The controls are simple and
intuitive, yet provide a rich set of functionality. A very elegant product
that redefines what operating a linear amplifier can be like.

[Elecraft] OT: Trivia - WWV & so-called "atomic" clocks

2011-06-02 Thread Ken - K0PP

The so-called "atomic clocks" use the 60 KHZ signal
from WWVB at the NBS transmitter site north of Fort
Collins, CO.

The signal level from the station got a bit of a boost
awhile back when the PA from the decommissioned
100 KHZ LORAN C transmitter in ND(?) was moved
to Ft. Collins and retrofitted into the 60 KHZ transmitter.

The 20 KHZ WWVL rig is/was a beauty ... HB by NBS
and painted bright blue ... with a brush. Both VLF
antennas are of such High-Q that a thunderstorm overhead
will detune them enough to throw the TX's into overload and
shutdown protection.

Re: [Elecraft] Still lacking

2011-06-02 Thread Wayne Burdick
Sorry, guys, the KX3's internal ATU isn't going to be accessible for
patching through an external amp. It will safely handle 12 W (max KX3
power on most bands), but 20 W is pushing it.

I routinely work the world with 10 W SSB and marginal antennas, hence
the KX3's 10-W nominal power-output target :)

Flat-Rate Priority Mail is just that - the same amount to ship to
all 50 states! I use PayPal as it most convenient for selling and
buying (verified funds and almost instantly transferred-no monetary
exchange fees). I can use my credit card with PayPal as most hams
are not able to accept a cc payment. But then some folks don't
"like" PayPal (I translate that to mean they do not trust it). I
have been using is for several years with both ebay and private ham
transactions, in the USA and internationally. Never a problem!

BTW International Priority Mail is reasonably fast (from Alaska to EU
about 15-days or less).

Customs forms are not hard to fill out. If you have a question ask
at the postal desk. I think the CONUS folks need to come up and mush
a dog team at -20F and have a sleep-over in an igloo. Folks have got
too used to easy-fast everything with apps!

Just as a side note so you know where I am coming from: I lived my
first three years in Alaska in a 8x10 foot canvas wall-tent heated
with wood and no utilities of any kind...I would not trade that
experience for anything (but glad I live in a modern gas-heated home,
now). I have had sled dogs since 1980 with only three left in their
(and my) old age.

When folks limit their transactions to CONUS they miss out. I hear
there are a lot of rich oil people live up in Alaska! I could say
more but this is OT.

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Mike
Anybody remember the scam where the buyer wanted to overpay by $500 or $1000 or
so,
have a "friend" in the U.S. handle the shipping and the extra remittance. The
overseas payment bounced, and there was no recourse.

[Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-02 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Ray,

I have the impression that quite a number of the US sellers are worried about
shipping overseas (I don't know why).

In the past, when I bought from private individuals in US, I had to even give
them weblink to USPS about using which way of shipping e.g. International
Priority standard rate box etc.  Or, I simply ask them to use my Fedex account
so that they have no involvement in paying any shipping costs.

In some cases, since the sellers were so worried that I simply asked them to
ship to my friends in US. And then I asked my friend to re-ship the gears to me.

Nowadays, logistics among countries are just so common.  As long as the parcels
are well packed and properly tracked, I don't see any problems.

Similar to you, I am not complaining about anyone here but just curious.

主題︰ [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

I am intrigued, I've noticed that when various Elecraft rigs are offered for
private sale on this forum they invariably say " Continental USA" only.

Why...?

We Europeans also have PayPal, Visa, Bank Transfers  etc etc so what's the
problem please?

I just bought a kit & accessories direct from Elecraft 2 weeks ago, it was
delivered within 7 days and they didn't have a problem with selling to
Europe.

Just interested .

Shipping via the US Postal Service is not something that many of us
would choose to do, especially with something as delicate and valuable
as a ham transceiver. That's a big part of why UPS and Fed Ex exist.
--
=OK, but it is generally cheaper outside CONUS to use USPS vs.
UPS/FedEx. And the buyer chooses mode of shipping and pays the rate
- so where it the problem? For something expensive, definitely
insure it (again the buyer pays).
---
In my case, the major reason I don't want to sell internationally is the
matter of customs and duties, with the associated paperwork. Here it's
mostly ignorance of what is needed, what the procedures are, etc. I
might look at it differently with a ham I knew as the buyer. Nothing
parochial beyond ignorance. :) 73, Jim K9YC

=And I think THIS is really the problem folks are having - they
imagine all sorts of issues! Customs and duties are paid by the
receiving party (not the shipper). All you need do is describe the
item. Simple as saying "Ham radio parts". Estimate their value
(this is what the customs will charge by), your name/address, the
destination name/address, your done! Not any harder than filling out
a money order. The form is half-page in size and most boxes do not
need to be filled in as they do not apply.

OK done ranting ;-)
