Radio Shack used to sell these with a RS box, but labeled Koss on the
phones. I have been using them for years, wore one out. And they sell
replacement pads on their web store (Koss).

Re: [Elecraft] Sticky feet

2012-03-15 Thread Gary K9GS
I use the rubber mesh shelf liner in black under my paddles...it works
fantastic. I also use it on top of my amp to keep the watt-meter
perched up there from sliding around. I just cut out around the
ventilation holes so they aren't blocked.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is what people are doing if you use
the bail on the K3 and P3? I don't own a P3, yet, but on the K3 I have
cut a decorative piece of wood to elevate the P3 a little higher off the
desk. The piece of wood is currently a little wider than the K3 bail.
I've stuck some ~1/4 thick silicone rubber feet to the desk facing side
and this keeps things from sliding around very well.

One thing I plan on doing when I add the P3 is to make a similar thing
but spanning the combined width of K3 + P3. I'll also cut a shallow
grove in the top of the wood piece which will hold the bail and will
keep the front panels in the same plane. I may even make this out of
some cool looking exotic wood. I'm a wood worker too.

Once I do this I'll post some pictures but it will probably be a while
before I get around to this.

[Elecraft] Shorty P3

2012-03-15 Thread Andy Faber
Elecrafters:

I've just finished an interesting project, cutting a P3 in half! I wanted to
reduce the size and weight of the P3 I take down to P49Y in carry-on luggage,
so I cut the top, bottom, and side panels to shorten them, drilled a few holes,
and, voila, a P3 that is less than 5 inches deep.

It works fine and should be easier to fit in my computer bag.

In addition to the general sacrilege of cutting up an Elecraft product, there
are some downsides: (1) While the current P3 is mostly empty space, obviously
Elecraft has plans to put more stuff inside it, and it I want to use that
capability, presumably they will sell me new panels (actually I received
suggestions to make new aluminum panels to avoid this problem and also to still
further reduce weight). (2) The tilt angle is changed, and requires the back to
be propped up on something; and finally (3) Elecraft's concept of intentionally
adding weight by using steel panels so that the unit doesn't move when buttons
are pushed has been compromised, but I think I can live with that.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with my Shorty P3. BTW, great thanks to Jeffrey,
WA6KBL, who did the machining after I realized my tools were inadequate to the
job. He has a garage that looks like a machine shop and knows how to use all
those power tools, too.

  Pictures are at

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?

2012-03-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

> But I would buy a second KPA500 in a heartbeat if I knew I could
> modify it for 10 watts drive for full output!

I think you're being optimistic about full output with 10W drive.

The VRF-2933 is rated for 23 dB gain (typical). With perhaps 1 dB loss
in the low pass filter, a dB or so in the output transformer, roughly 3
dB in feedback to improve linearity one dB in the input transformer,
bias decoupling, gate balancing, and two dB in the input matching comes
very close to the roughly 15 dB gain limit in the US regulations.

Some of those values are based on application notes from Motorola,
MicroSemi and APT for similar MOSFET designs while some values are
from Elecraft designers. In any case, the inescapable conclusion is
that there is no "magic modification" to get the additional 2 - 3 dB
of gain necessary to get 600W with 10W of driver from the KPA-500.

[Elecraft] Koss Headsets for the K3 (Was: Re: Yamaha CM500 Headset)www

2012-03-15 Thread Gary K9GS
An update:

I stopped by the Koss Factory Store today. I looked at the SB49 first.
(The SB45 is identical to the SB49 but without the volume control in the
cord). I didn't really like the way the SB49 fit. It's a very
subjective thing but comfort was what I was looking for. The other
thing I didn't like was the flexible boom for the microphone was very
"whippy". It was almost like a wet noodle. Not good.

Next I looked at the SB40. The fit was great and very comfortable for
the 5 minutes I wore it. The mic boom was stiffer too. The SB40 has a
dynamic mic element. I ended up buying the SB40. The price was $39.00
plus sales tax.

I was all set to buy a Yamaha CM500 but I really wanted to see how they
fit first. I looked at a couple places and couldn't find a local store
that had the CM500. For this reason I look at Koss. The other thing
Koss has going for it is the limited lifetime warranty. Being that I
live near the factory this is a big advantage. Second is that I've
owned other Koss products and have always been very happy with them.

As I said I've never used the Yamaha CM500 but the Koss SB40 looks very
similar.

I'm also kind of a headphone junkie. With the K3 I figure that most
modern headsets have much more performance (frequency response, etc)
than one needs for communication. So they are all pretty much up to the
task. Same for the microphone. With the TX and RX Eq features of the
K3 I decided to concentrate on fit and comfort. I think that juist
about any headset and microphone can be made to sound good.

I haven't used the SB40's yet but will report back once I've played with
them a bit. Here's the link to the Koss website:

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net control operator needed

2012-03-15 Thread Phillip Shepard
As I stated last Sunday, I will not be able to be the net control operator
for the weekely SSB net for the next three weeks (3/18, 3/25 and 4/1). The
net meets on Sundays at 1800Z on or about 14.3035 MHz. We need someone or
two or three to step up and take the job. It's not difficult. You should
have a good station, perhaps with an amp and beam antenna. I do the net
with 500W and a two element quad, for example. It's informal and open.
Just put out the CQ and pick up the calls, names, QTHs and rig types (with
s/n for the Elecraft radios). Ideally, you can later put out a list of the
checkins to this reflector. It's fun and good experience.

Any takers? Thank you.

[Elecraft] Sticky feet

2012-03-15 Thread Rich
For more grip I have used rtv ( silicone ) we’ve all used it for so many things.
Use the one for windshields it’s flowable so if you turn your rig upside down
and level
and coat the feet that should work. I need to try it too.
I keep pushing my panadapter back when I push the display button.
You can get stick on feet, they are usually silicone too.
Put them next to the stock feet if they are tall enough or stick them on the
stock feet
or replace the stock feet with them.
I’ve seen them at ham swaps and hardwares.

[Elecraft] KX3 kit alignment just got easier

2012-03-15 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi all,

We had originally intended to have KX3 kit builders perform some
alignment steps that require a ham-band receiver and transmitter/
signal generator. But the KX3 is designed to appeal to first-time
builders who may not have any ham gear at all, so we've decided to do
this alignment at the factory on *all* KX3s. This will ensure
consistent performance in all cases.

Unfortunately it will also increase the workload for our manufacturing
techs. Lyle and I have "interrupted our regular program" to write
firmware to help automate and speed up some alignment procedures.

All of the calibration procedures can still be performed manually, and
will be documented in the Owner's Manual. They can be accomplished in
the field if another 160-6 meter ham transceiver is available.

Wayne

[Elecraft] Thanks ELECRAFT

2012-03-15 Thread Bill
I am really pleased with the performance of my Elecraft gear and
the  great support that they provide.
It  is also impressive
that they think of all the little things too. For example:
-From comments that were made here on this list, I knew that
I would have to make up a new power cord for my P3 after installing the SVGA
board. When the new board is installed  there is more than 500 mA of current
required so the P3 can no longer be
powered from the K3 power jack.  When my
new P3SVGA board arrived I was pleased to see that they had thought to INCLUDE
a new P3 power cord.
-I ordered one of the new power cords to run the KPA500 on
220 volts instead of 120 volts.  I know
my KPA500 kit came with both sets of fuses but of course I could not remember
where
I put the fuses for 220 volt operation. When the new power cord arrived it also
INCLUDED a set of the correct fuses.
 Thanks ELECRAFT.  You
guys are AWSOME!

the bottom of my W1 page at

   http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/w1/

Heinz did an excellent job on it and other Elecraft accessories! 73,

[Elecraft] P3 Display Anomaly

2012-03-15 Thread Rose
Google "SeaSonde" ... I used to work within a few hundred yards of
two of them ... one near Waldport, OR and one on Yaquina Head, OR.
Both are housed in the utility areas of public bathrooms. (;-) I have
numerous photos.

There are hundreds of ionospheric sounders scattered all over the
world. The NBS operates one behind one of the NBS buildings in
Boulder, CO.

Noise from Jupiter is common throughout the HF range and can
sometimes seen in PSK waterfall displays.

I used to work in radio astronomy, BTW

Ah yes, now I remember hearing that name. Thank you, Simon Those are
the sweeping beacons I mentioned.

Google on 'chirpsounder' and you'll find a strange world of
propagation analysis stuff you may not have known about or imagined.
Peter Martinez G3PLX, one of ham radio's resident geniuses (inventor
of PSK), seems to have started the ball rolling with a software app
and analytical framework. Others have built on it to create a number
of esoteric tools to figure out what's going on up there in the sky.

Of course, what Jim was hearing that prompted all this may be
something different, like a faulty cable repeater, and may have
nothing to do with chirpsounders. But some of the ones I hear
definitely are.

They are chirpsounders - normally on SSB or CW you may hear a 'blip' as they
pass through

using a pandapter you can see they whizzing up band visually!

They are Ionospheric sounders mapping the layers. Quite useful tools.

There are various radars and sounders also operating around 5-6 Mhz and 10 MHz

TIGER around the 10 MHz spectrum is another ionospheric sounds and you will see
various CODAR signals too (these are wave heights and direction radars for
weather)

not very useful! with their broadband noisey signals.

HF is a busy place even in these days of satellites and microwaves!

I see 'em too, Jim, and I know they're for real because I can hear

Some of these may be beacons. There are some beacons that sweep from

You're not the Lone Ranger, Kemosabe. I see it, not a spur for me, goes
away without the antenna. I also see "moving humps", sorry, no other
description, that drift from time to time, and generally upwards in
frequency but not always. They go away with no antenna too. There's a
whole lot of very weird electromagnetic radiation out there. I can see
an ET or conspiracy theory developing here, I think I'll decline.

And your use of "anomaly" conforms to NASA standards. It could be an
inop indicator, or pointy part of the rocket in the sand somewhere south
of Phoenix. A truly useful term.

[Elecraft] KX3 dust covers and carrying cases

2012-03-15 Thread Rose
It's no surprise ... I've been getting many inquiries
about dust covers and carrying cases for the KX3,
and I've been shipping dust covers for a few weeks.

Elecraft has loaned me an empty KX3 housing with
knobs for use as a manikin to make the dust covers,
and now I'm using it to make a prototype carrying case.

The case is made along the lines of my K1, K2 and K3
cases and all that's left is to try several approaches to
the interior of the case. The goal has been to house
and protect the KX3 and provide space for accessories.
The radio will be stowed vertically on (either) end, and
there's space for a power cord, microphone, key and/or
the paddle set and perhaps a wire antenna. Side and
front pockets will be optional, as with my other cases.

I'll be sending photos to Elecraft in a few days to get
their "take" on the product and then I'll have the cases
available. I'll be showing one at Visalia, of course.

Stay tuned ...

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Display Anomaly

2012-03-15 Thread Jim Sheldon
Disconnect your antenna, set the REF LVL on the P3 so you can see the
background noise at the base of the display and watch it for a while. If you
no longer see it, it isn't in the K3/P3 anywhere and is external to the radio.

I have several "sweepers" that come through from time to time. One is
somewhere in the neighborhood and the other is coming from a bad TV cable line
amplifier on the pole outside my house. I'm having a heck of a time getting
the cable company that it's their problem and they are liable for fixing it. I
have gotten the local "fox hunt" group out and they confirm my findings and we
know exactly which amp it is. I have spectrum pix of it using the image
capture feature of the P3 with dates, times and frequencies. I filed a formal
complaint with the FCC and sent them copies of all correspondence with the
cable company, my spectrum analysis pictures and notarized affidavits from the
fox hunt guys with their direction finding results. Hopefully that will get
the same results I got with the power company. Had to file a formal complaint
with the FCC on that one too, but now, they are all sweetness and light and
whenever I call 'em they jump on the line noise problems as quick
as they can free up a crew to clean/fix insulators in the neighborhood.

Nickolay,

Yes, anti-static measures are important when handling the 2N7000 (and
many more devices.
If you do not have a goo anti-static mat and a wrist strap, then
shorting all pins together until after the device is soldered in place
is a good preventative measure.

[Elecraft] P3 Display Anomaly

2012-03-15 Thread Jim Bennett
Just wondering if I am the Lone Ranger here or if anyone else is having this P3
"experience". Every so often, perhaps once every 20 - 40 seconds or so, I see
some sort of spur go flying across the screen. It starts low and flies up in
frequency, right off the display. With my display span set at 50 kHz below and
50 kHz above, this "spur" takes only a second to cross the entire display
range. Not band dependent, either. My K3 is running on solar / battery power,
so it isn't something from my power supply.

It isn't causing me a problem, just wondering if I have a "special" K3/P3 or if
this is common.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] T/R switching

2012-03-15 Thread picmaster
Hi Don,

Thanks for your answer. The output of the 8V voltage regulator is just
perfect (for a 10% device) - 7.98V. I was wondering why I get 500mV
voltage drop across Q1 & Q2, but if you say that's OK, then I'm fine.

Slightly offtopic - I had also another failure of 2N7000 - again in Control
Board,
but this time Q5 (sidetone generation). I again made the temporary fix with
BJT+33k resistor, until I order a batch of 2N7000s. Next time I mount those
picky MOSFETs, I'll try to put a tiny bare wire across all the pins for temp
protection...

Re: [Elecraft] K2 External Speaker

2012-03-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Don,
This has been a frequent request for the K2. The K2 internal speaker
is just fine for a quiet room, but is lacking if the operator has
hearing loss or the location is other than a "quiet room".

I would suggest building an external amplified speaker. OTOH, you may
find a set of computer speakers that will do the job as well.
Unfortunately, many computer amplified speakers are not well shielded
and will "do funny things" in the presence of RF Fields.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] T/R switching

2012-03-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Sorry for the blank post, it was a "slip of the finger" problem.

The 2N7000 is a great switching FET, but as you noticed is susceptible
to ESD damage until it is mounted in its circuit, and then the static
susceptibility is contained.

As for your fix and substitution, measure the output of the 8 volt
regulator - that is a 10% device, so anything between 7.2 and 8.8 volts
is acceptable. Your 8T and 8R voltages should be within the range of
7.2 and 8.8 volts if all is well.

I suspect that your substitution for the 2N7000 will work just fine in
this particular case.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?

2012-03-15 Thread Oliver Dröse
Great Alan, nice idea with the manual! ;-))

Anyway, a very big part of this world's ham population is not bound to FCC
rules. So no need to make it public how to modify, just publish the
schematics or send them out on request without pointing out something and
Elecraft should be safe?

My KPA500 is serving me very well on my remote station so also no chance to
take the PA apart again and have a look myself and just buying a second one
without knowing it is possible might be a bit too expensive to find out.
;-)) But I would buy a second KPA500 in a heartbeat if I knew I could modify
it for 10 watts drive for full output!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 External Speaker

2012-03-15 Thread ac5p
Hi Don,  Before you go to external spkr, try a speaker deflector on the top of
the K2.  A 2" PVC street elbow (female to female) works very well, especially
for cw side tone.  It makes a big difference to have the sound directed at your
head rather than straight up in the air.
If you like how it works, you can spray it gray for a closer color match.

Any suggestions on a external speaker? I like the homebrew one that matches
the K2, but I would not be able to pull that off.

The other reason is they might get in trouble with the FCC if they make
it too easy to modify.

Many years ago when the CB craze was at its height, a manufacturer who
shall remain nameless came out with a new transceiver. On page 1 of the
manual was an illustration of the underside of the chassis with a big
arrow pointing to a certain wire. "Do not cut this wire or the
transceiver will transmit on 11 meters."

They didn't get away with it. :=)

[Elecraft] P3 Artifacts On The Waterfall Display

2012-03-15 Thread Jack Regan
I have noticed that there are several white lines showing in the waterfall
display that do not move when I change frequency. Some are fuzzy and some
are well defined narrow lines. All these lines are vertical and would appear
to be signals except that when I tune toward the signal they never change
their position on the display. Real signals can be tuned into and the
waterfall shows their change to the center of the display. It is really
noticeable on 10 20 and 50 but does not seem to be happening at all on 15
and 40. The rest of the bands have the problem to a lesser degree.

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 travel/portable protection

2012-03-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
David,

If your concern is greater during travel, then may I suggest the covers
by Rose Kopp. They are dust covers (and thus are not waterproof), but
they not only look great, but pad the KX3 quite nicely.
If you need something waterproof, may I suggest a pelican case.
A "quick and dirty" solution to the waterproofing cover without the
pelican case is a gallon size freezer "Zip-Loc" bag (or other acceptable
brand.

[Elecraft] KX3 travel/portable protection

2012-03-15 Thread David Stratton
It would be nice if someone would develop

a rubber like slip-on covering for the KX3

like they have for multi-meters. It would

need openings in the appropriate places and

lettering for the opening designations that it

covers up. Also nice would be a mating plastic

snap-on cover (clear?) that fits over the display

and controls. All this would help keep the KX3 from

damage because the smaller and more portable

a radio is the more likely it could suffer damage

during travel/portable operations.

That would minimize the drop but is D34 even necessary? You already
have a shunt diode (D35) across the supply side of the fuse that should

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?

2012-03-15 Thread Oliver Dröse
I second that request! Would be really handy ...

Sorrily still no schematics available on the Elecraft website, otherwise I
would already have looked for myself.

Three big reasons I can think of that Elecraft does not want to release the
schematics:
a.) To keep them hidden for the competition (quite understandable).
b.) It would probably put down sales of the KPA3 a bit (hmmm).
c.) If somebody modifies it themselves it will be almost impossible to
support it in case of problems (quite understandable, too).

Maybe we need to sign a special document freeing Elecraft of all
responsibilities and tighting ourselves to non-disclosure to get the
schematics. ;-))

Re: [Elecraft] K3 12VDC OUT increased current mod available soon

2012-03-15 Thread Wayne Burdick
The only easy thing to change in this regard is the 1N4007. It
probably drops close to a volt, and could be replaced with a 1N5817,
etc. But if you want to pull more current, you also have to change the
choke and the self-resetting fuse. We're working on that.

another story
I keyed another SB200 with an ICOM rig and built a little 5 volt key

but it used an external wall wart. I may dig up a 9 volt relay and key it
using a 9 v battery
may pick up a heath SB220 fer 60 bux from a local shouldnt be able to

2012-03-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Instead of simply raising the current limit, you should be addressing
the voltage issues as well. With 1.7V (SB530 and 1N4007) of diode
drop plus I^2*R losses in two chokes and the switch, the "+12V" is
already low (11.8V) with a 13.8V supply. Run the K3 on battery or
figure in a typical 0.8V-1.2V sag in the input supply in transmit and
the "+12V" output is less than 10.5V.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA

2012-03-15 Thread Tom Azlin N4ZPT
Mine came yesterday. Is installed and working with power from a 1 amp
position on the station power strip. I am using one of my older displays
at 1024x768 and still very nice. Will swap in one of my other wide
displays later that has multiple inputs. Picture in Picture might be
nice here. Or might pick up an SVGA frame grabber and see if I can
stream the P3 video.

I think I would like to be able to switch the filter marker to the U
that I like on the main P3 display. Also seems that the display
calibration is off by about 5 dB from the main P3 display so need to go
read about calibration. result is that if the main P3 display is nice
looking the waterfall on the external monitor looks too light as I can
not see signals I am copying just fine.

Otherwise very nice.

Hi,

Is it any simple way to modify KPA to drive full power
with KX3? I see VRF2933 have minimum 20 dB gain.
Looks like killer combination.

I know there is some PA gain rectrictions in US, but
many of us are not covered by it ;)

2012-03-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The problem is that many "high voltage" amplifiers have significant
relay current and no current limiting or reverse EMF ('catch") diode
and often exhibit a large *negative* spike when the relay opens.

An external relay or a "buffer" like Ampkeyer, Ameritron ARB-704,
WB9KZY "Keyall", etc. is a good insurance policy. A relay or buffer
is required with any negative voltage (SB-200, FL-2100, FL-2100B, etc.)
key lines.

One alternative is to put in a mod to the Heathkit amp.

I put one of the soft key mods into my SB-200. Easy to put in and works
nicely.

Hi All,
Just a short note for all regarding Fred Cady's fine K3 book which very
nicely augments the K3 manual. I just ordered another copy for a UK based
friend and with shipping this book cost just €24.38. The shipping costs by
priority mail are only €3.46 which for a 288 page tomb is not bad at all.
There is no VAT on books in the Land of Saints and Scholars so I do not have
to cope with this added expense. Normally the delivery is two or three
weeks to EU and I think my first copy arrived within less than ten days.
The book is informative, good value and the shipping is not dear at least
for EI and G.

Re: [Elecraft] newbie setup questions on memory editor & repeater setup

2012-03-15 Thread Tom Azlin N4ZPT
Hi Julie,

I have not seen another list response. Perhaps you got direct responses?

The split mode is not necessary for a repeater. See page 29 of the
manual. I dial in the repeater on one of the VFOs, switch to FM mode,
then push the Alt key ( hold down mode key) multiple times until it
switches to the + or - offset I want. When I key the mike the VFO
displays the offset transmit freq then goes back to the receive freq
when I let off the PTT. Separately is an offset setting but as I
remember it was defaulted correctly.

The squelch on my K3 is the RF/SQL knob. Setup on page 53 or around there.

OK, I don't have the P3SVGA, but on the P3 itself, there are two choices
for font ... big and little ... and it changes everything on the
display. The SVGA is just a video interface if I understand correctly,
I'd guess it follows the content of the P3 screen.

Re: [Elecraft] switching a heath amp

2012-03-15 Thread Dave Hachadorian
I used the K3 to switch my SB-220 backup amp (+130 VDC) a couple
months ago. It worked fine through an entire contest. The K3
spec is +200 VDC at 5 amps. I did put a reverse diode across the
relay line to prevent the possibility of negative inductive
kickback. Actually, I put the diode right at the K3 via an RCA
wye with the diode soldered across one leg of the wye. It was an
emergency deal, but it worked fb.

[Elecraft] [K2] T/R switching

2012-03-15 Thread picmaster
Hello fellow hams,

One more K2 (#7293) was born this week in Europe - thanks to the Elecraft team
for designing this kit and making it available for the ham crowd.

The radio is now assembled, but I have small issues with the testing. During
the initial testing on 40m reception the radio was almost deaf (even 7.3MHz AM
stations were faint), and I found out that both 8R and 8T control lines were
activated at the same time (thus enabling all attenuators). It turned out that
Q3 (2N7000) on the Control Board was zapped and was pulling the base of Q1 low
even without applied G-S voltage, thus activating erroneously the 8T line. I
didn't had any spare 2N7000 parts around, so I had to invent a BJT-replacement
for this low-power MOSFET, based on BC550C and 33K base resistor (you know,
it's hard to buy spares in the night). The replacement worked OK, but I was
wondering whether my circuit modification has changed the T/R control circuit
voltages. I did a comparison between Q4's drain voltage (the healthy MOSFET)
when ON and Q3's (now BC550C) collector voltage, and the results were 5mV on
Q4's drain and 46mV on Q3's collector. To me even with the higher (45mV vs 5mV)
saturation C-E voltage of BC550C, Q1 and Q2 switches will still be able to
saturate properly when enabled.

So my 1st question is why originally 2N7000 were used to control T/R switches
(especially taking into account that these MOSFETs are very sensitive to ESD)?
I'll also appreciate comments whether my T/R small modification looks
acceptable.

My 2nd question is what's the acceptable voltage on 8R & 8T control lines? I'm
measuring around 7.5V on those control lines, while the K2 manual (rev.H1,
p.114) says that the voltage should be 8V. While PIN attenuators and MOSFET
switches should be rather insensitive to the 0.5V difference between the
theoretical and practical values, there's a possibility for changes in the PA
bias (although the current mirror and current steering circuit seems to keep
the bias rather stable, at least on the schematic).

Thanks in advance for your comments & responses.

Regards,
Nikolay (LZ1NRD)

[Elecraft] K2 - external map - I2C

2012-03-15 Thread Jack Generaux
Folks,

I have a K2 and have built a Communication Concepts 100 watt external amp.
Until now I have been using individual LPFs but have a Packer LPF-100 that I
was using with the MOBO project and I would like to use it for the K2/CC combo.
The easiest bandswitching is with a 6-pole switch. However, with the MOBO, I
was using an I2C controller (8574) to automate the switching. Has anyone been
able to automate the LPF switching with their K2? I also posted this with the
Yahoo group. Thanks

73,
Jack (W0FNQ)

Re: [Elecraft] Make the Feet "Stickier"

2012-03-15 Thread Joel Black
I got some stuff at Lowe's made by DAP. It is called "Blue Stick." I
took a small amount and rolled it into a ball then stuck it to each
foot. I can now press the power button and jack in and out the
headphones without chasing my radio around the shelf. Thanks for all
the advice.

[Elecraft] W1 software testing help

2012-03-15 Thread Mike Markowski
If you have a W1, I hope you can take a few minutes to help me test software.

The software runs, but the test is to see if it can be run with a single click
from a web page. I'm fairly new to that aspect. If you'd like to test it, can
you please follow the directions below and email me offlist whether it worked or
not? And if not, what OS, 32/64 bit, serial port info (motherboard or usb
converter), and errors you received?

Thanks very much! 73,
Mike ab3ap

1. Connect to serial port and turn on your W1.

2. Go to: http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/w1/

3. Below the top two pictures is a little Elecraft icon that says "Click me".
Click it and hopefully an analog face to the W1 will start up. (When prompted,
it's safe to accept the certificate.)

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA Frequency Display

2012-03-15 Thread Doug Turnbull
Fred,
Is it possible to set the P3SVGA font differently than the P3 font?
This would certainly be a help. My P3SVGA is not yet with me.

You can set the font size for the P3 screen in the menu. Not on the
external monitor? Maybe it doesn't change the end-point and center
frequency display, I'll have to check.

[Elecraft] P3 F/W 1.11 Ref Lvl Issue

2012-03-15 Thread Richard S. Leary
FYI;

Downloaded new F/W 1.12 for the P3. Set the Ref Lvl on three bands. All
remained as set with subsequent band changes. Works good.

Where else but Elecraft would you have a "minor" glitch fixed in say less
than 2 days. Pretty outstanding I'd say. Just keep up the great work. Which
is pretty amazing considering the fact that Elecraft people who do this are
spread out across the country, and overseas, if you include the "testers".
Impressive.

Got to "touch" a KX3 at the Mike and Key Hamfair at Puyallup, WA last
Saturday. Dick, AC7MA had it on display. A lot of good stuff in a small
package. Two problems; keyer was for right handers, and it was a bit smudged
all over (due to the many many fingerprints all over it from folks who were
inconsiderate enough not to wash their hands before touching it. Shame.). I
need a KPA500 first.

OK, I know, enough. I'm back to bed.

Thanks Again for the Excellent service,

73, Rick, W7LKG
