Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

2012-11-16 Thread Geoffrey Downs
Yes my K3/K144XV does the same. When it showed 181 MHz on the VFO A display
(after entering 145) ERR PL1 also appeared briefly on the VFO B display.
Then, after using the bandswitch to go to 2m the VFO A display started with
144.000 MHz but on subsequent visits to 2m via the bandswitch it stayed
where I had left it, as normal, and did not revert to 144.000 MHz

I am using my K3 with the internal transverter K144XV. Today I installed
the (beta) Firmware 4.58.
My problem: Entering any 2m- QRG, e.g. 144.300 by pushing on the front panel
"FREQ ENT" 1 4 4 . 3 0 0 "ENTER (AFX)" results in changing the K3 to
180.300 MHz
e.g. 145.525 results in 181.525 MHz ...
Always exactly 36 MHz too much! Also when entering QRGs by my contesting
software via RS232...
The only way to activate 2m is using the bandswitch-button - then my K3
starts with 144.000 MHz.

[Elecraft] OT: Open wire feeder cautions

2012-11-16 Thread Edward R Cole
Ron relates getting an RF burn. I recall getting burn thru my finger
from a 432 MHz 5w tripler. I always attributed it to the 800vdc on
the plate but may actually have been RF. Poked a pin hole burn right
thru my finger (very painful for a couple weeks). I was more careful
handling live circuits after that (about 1966). The tube was a
high-level tripler from 144 to 432 MHz. I drove an 832 triode with
about 15-20w getting about 25% output on 432. That made my first
contacts on the band with CW over about 40-miles. The output tank
circuit used a metal nut can as a coaxial cavity. Yeah sounds "nutty"!

[Elecraft] KAT500

2012-11-16 Thread Barry Simpson
Further to my earlier posting, I have now got the new KAT500 connected to
the K3 and KPA500 as per the instructions.

Of course it did not work at all at first. However, I just got back from
dinner out with the XYL, checked again and found that I had reversed the
antenna/transceiver cables !!

Now corrected and seems to be working perfectly.

It also does not seem to introduce any loss whatsoever, just like the K3
built in ATU. I don't know how Elecraft do that as both my Kenwood rigs
have significant losses in their ATU's as did my previous Yaesu.

The mojo is still working.

Re: [Elecraft] With all the problems

2012-11-16 Thread Thom Durfee
we can end this thread now...it has been stretched to it's limits.

that being said I can say that I have been a big fan of Elecraft since
it's creation. In my ham career of nearly 40 years I can say without a
doubt that this company is one of the best I have ever been involved
with. I simply love their products and their service.

I have had numerous problems with my current K2 project and Elecraft has
been nothing short of amazing with advice and replacing some missing
parts. Even after my mischievous new puppy managed to get his sharp
teeth on my front panel board and completely destroy it, some quick
exchanges of emails brought me to a satisfactory conclusion to the
problem. No, they did not replace it for free but they did get it to me
as quick as possible so I could continue construction.

Y'all have a great day.

I think that I have gotten my K3 in a funny mode somehow. It will not
display decoded CW in the VFO B area. I turned on the TEXT DECODE and
adjusted the threshold as described in the manual. The "T" is displayed
in the lower right corner of the display. I can tap the DISP key and
see the clock and other setting but no CW decode is displayed. I have
the latest firmware installed. This feature used to work but I haven't
used it for a while.

 Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] soldering SMD's

2012-11-16 Thread Don KA1KU
I know the group has given you good suggestions and options for SMD soldering
but there is another route which is much better IMHO, but more expensive, of
course. Being able to solder SMD devices easily, togther with todays CAD
Tools, such as Eagle (free for small two-sided boards), makes experimenting
with all sorts of devices possible and exciting. I have done a lot of work
with Dallas Semiconductor 1-wire devices and Atmel AVR Microcontroller.
Many of the devices are only available in SMD versions, so I jumped in with
a hot-air work station and have had a lot of fun and success.
A number of years ago I purchased an Aoyue 852A station on EBay for $80 or
so. I also bought a 10cc syringe of Solder paste (Superior Solder Paste)
for a few bucks. To use this method, for example to solder a sot-223 device
with three or four pins on one side and a tab on the other, just lay a fine
line of paste across all four pins and another parallel line of paste along
the tab pad. The paste connects all four small pads.
The paste is gooey so its easy to place and align the device onto the pads.
Carefully align and move on to the next device to install. After all of the
surface mount devices are placed, use the hot-air gun to 'melt' the solder
paste. The 852 has an air flow adjustment which must be set very low to
keep from blowing the tiny parts off or out of alignment. When the solder
paste melts the solder snaps to the pads and device pins and clears the
connection between the pins like magic. See YouTube for lots of videos.
This is probably not the right solution for building a kit or two, but is a
great option to consider for the hard-core builder. I have not done any Ham
related building with this but am thinking about building a SMD QRP
transmitter one of these days.

Re: [Elecraft] soldering SMD's

2012-11-16 Thread Don KA1KU
Sorry, Eagle is a Printed circuit design software. See cadsoftusa.com. You
can draw your circuit schematic and then create a PCB board layout. The
software will then produce the necessary files to send to a board house to
create the actual board. Within Eagle there is a very extensive library of
all kinds of electrical parts and you can even create your own part
schematic and pad layout, which I've had to do with most of the Dallas
One-Wire devices. It has a somewhat steep learning curve but the effort is
worthwhile and the results are fantastic. I use Eagle on Linux but I think
it is available for most operating systems. It is one great product, and
there is a free version for expirmenters.
One thing I didn't mention which I also use are adapter boards which have
the pad for mounting one SMD device and provide connection layout suitable
for bread-boarding. Sparkfun.com has a lot of these for cheap. This lets
you build/expirment with a few SMD devices without creating a circuit board.
I solder the device to these adapters as described previously.
I didn't mean to highjack this thread, but SMD soldering is very challenging
for all of us. It is why the wonderful build of the K2 has become the
solderless assembly of the K3. Electronics has moved on and SMD is how
every modern system is/will be built. It will only get worse with new
generation stuff like ball-grid arrays and other high-density packaging.
Just imagine the size of a K3 with thru-hole devices, not that many of the
parts are even available in thru-hole format.

[Elecraft] ERR TXF Error during ESSB transmissions

OK but this is not my problem. If I have the FM filter enabled for AM
transmit then ESSB transmission gives me a "ERR TXF" error when trying to
transmit on SSB.

Seems like the firmware needs to now know that it has to use the 6KHz AM
filter and not the wider FM filter when enabling ESSB for SSB
transmissions???

[Elecraft] K3 no mod from FP conn

Before I hassle elecraft support maybe someone on
the list can come up with something.

Just put together a new K3 and I can´t get any mic
connection to the FP connector, i e no modulation.
It works ok from the rear connector.

I checked Config / Main and don´t seem to find any
errors. Is there anything I could have forgot? Or
perhaps it´s just plain faulty.

The bias is not the issue, it´s turned off.

One thing, when I measure on the mic audio pin on
the connector I seem to have 5 Volts, that puzzles me.
I have not tried to measure on the rear connector
when that one is switched on.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 will not display decoded CW

Craig, Try tapping DISP again. If you tell the radio to display the
alternate data with the DISP control that is all you will see...no
decoded text will show.

[Elecraft] K3 CWT Function

2012-11-16 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

Checked out the CWT function with the latest beta 4r58 and all appears
to be back to normal (pre 4r51). Full range on the display and nicely
balanced about the centre point. It's been a while in the fixing but
it's been worth the wait. I cannot comment on the CW decoder, I don't
use it.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

[Elecraft] Using XG-3 to Evaluate RX Antenna Switch

2012-11-16 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I recently built an 8-way hub for receiving antennas, using an
inexpensive Chinese made remote control switch.

The switch works fine - at least the controller in the shack actuates
the remote relays, but I'm quite suspicious of the actual RF performance.

Here's what I'm wondering - can I use the XG-3 as a signal source? I
was thinking I would connect its calibrated output to one of the antenna
inputs on the hub, then go back in the house and assess the resulting
levels on my receiver, both as a measure of throughput losses and of
isolation from the other inputs. The input impedance of the hub's
antenna ports is somewhere in the 450-650 ohm range, because of a 9:1
binocular transformer between the switch's output and the feedline,
which is RG-6.

What do you guys think? Will I get any useful information from this?
Will the transformer affect the RF voltage as seen on the other side of it.

Please be gentle - history major at work here.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 will not display decoded CW

2012-11-16 Thread Craig - AE6RR
Hi Fred,

I have tried tapping the DISP key several times and tried with both alt data
and VFO B. The CWT indicator does not blink when I adjust the threshold
either, so it may be a decoding problem.

I am testing with a K3/0 and the remote rig boxes, getting ready to deploy
the main K3/100 to a remote site so I am not sure that I want to deploy with
Beta firmware as you cannot re-flash the firmware remotely if there are
other problems. How stable is the 4.58 version?

BTW, I did test this with just the K3/100 in local mode also.

Thanks to Greg, AB7R for responding also.

Hi Craig,
4.51 does have some problems decoding CW and the beta 4.58 is better.
Also, you want to be displaying VFO B and not the alternate display.

I think that I have gotten my K3 in a funny mode somehow. It will not
display decoded CW in the VFO B area. I turned on the TEXT DECODE and
adjusted the threshold as described in the manual. The "T" is displayed in
the lower right corner of the display. I can tap the DISP key and see the
clock and other setting but no CW decode is displayed. I have the latest
firmware installed. This feature used to work but I haven't used it for a

 Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K3/0 to K3/100 RemoteRig transmit audio problem

I am using a K3/0 and a K3/100 with the RemoteRig boxes. I have the
standard versions as sold at HRO not the ones with the special microphone
jumper module. I jumpered the mic connections as shown in the RemoteRig

PTT does work OK.

[Elecraft] M1-M4 issues on Beta K3 software

2012-11-16 Thread Bill Davis
Maybe it is just me?? I had M1-M4 (Message buttons) programed for single
button band selection. After installing the Beta Firmware 4.58 all my
transverter frequencies above 6meters (222.1, 902.1, 10368.1) are messed up.
Even reloading good config does not resolve the single tap band change problem.

Looks similar to what Geoff G3UCK was reporting Band select is ok as far
as I can tell.

Yes MIC BTNunderstand, it´s off anyway.

MIC SELyes I know.

I was looking in all menus for the bias since I was
thinking that it was the culprit but didn´t find it.
However since it works from the rear panel connector
and not the FP connector can it still be the bias?

Yes. Why don't you build up another transformer to step up the
XG3 output and match the impedance of the output (input) of the
switch. Otherwise the voltage will be low (by about 19 dB =>
20 log(9)) due to the voltage step down in the transformer.

On the K3, set CONFIG:TUN PWR to 20.. then use the TUNE function (hold
the XMIT button - *not* the ATU TUNE button) to have the K3 make a 20W
key-down tone. If the KAT500 is in AUTO mode, and detects SWR above
the configured threshold, it should automatically start a full tune.
If you want to force a full-tune, tap the KAT500's TUNE button (while
the K3 is making the 20W tone). When the KAT500 finishes tuning, tap
XMIT on the K3 to stop the 20W tone.

You may want to set CONFIG:PWR SET to "Per Band" on the K3.

If you have the cabling in place, and the KPA500 configured for K3
integration, you should see messages on the K3 display when you change
the KPA500 from standby to operate. If this is working, run through
each band, and set the PWR level on the K3 once with the KPA500 in
standby (perhaps to 100W), and a second time with the KPA500 in
operate (start around 28W, and adjust for desired output). The K3 will
remember each setting (operate/bypass for each band).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 no mod from FP conn

2012-11-16 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
You have not yet mentioned tapping "2" with MAIN:MIC SEL on to toggle the
bias. The bias for FP.x and the bias for rP.x are independent and set by
tapping "2" when you have either of them selected.

The bias on the front pin should toggle on and off with the menu display
going back and forth between "FP.x bIAS" and "FP.x " .

Does it not do this?

No. You could use a 6-meter transceiver (including the K3), or our new

Just a battery update: I got the A123 26650 2400 mAh cells from Hobbyking
and they are indeed good quality new cells that test out at better than
rated capacity at a 3 amp discharge rate. These will make excellent long
life and safe battery packs.

Ive recently been made aware of another vendor who sells ready-made 4s
26650 packs for about $50 - epbuddy.com. They claim to use genuine A123
cells but I don't have personal experience with them. If true they would be
a real bargain at about half what Buddipole charges.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 no mod from FP conn

2012-11-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
I recall that some posts ago, you said you have 5 volts on pin 1 of the
front mic jack. That fact alone says bias is set on for the front mic.

Go to the MAIN MENU : MIC SEL entry
Then select FP.x (x = H or L)
You will likely see "bIAS" in the display - Tap the "2" button to turn
it off.

Your dynamic microphone does not need bias, and may in fact not work
with bias turned on. Some dynamic microphones can be damaged by
applying bias to them.
Even if they are not damaged, they certainly will "sound funny" with
bias turned on.

On your K3, go into CONFIG:TUN PWR and set the tune power to 25 watts.
The KAT500 takes about 20-25 watts to tune. Most of us had TUN PWR set
at 5W or close for the KAT3, and have forgotten about the setting.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 no mod from FP conn

2012-11-16 Thread Jan Erik Holm
Sorry I didn´t. Yes I did do that and then bias turns on of course.
Thanks for the advice, I didn´t know about that command. I never
ever use bias with my microphones. In the first place I was
thinking maybe bias was on as default, this wasn´t the case with
my first K3. Indeed when tapping "2" BIAS comes up in the display.
However it wasn´t logical, if the bias was on, that when switching
to the rear panel connector it did work and not from the FP connector.
I´m sorry if I don´t express myself clear enough but this isn´t my
language of birth you know.
Anyway at this point I think it is the FP connector that hasn´t
mated correctly (as Lyle pointed out). This seems logical since
in the first place I was missing some stand off´s that holds the
DSP board, this I didn´t mention. However I did put the stuff together
anyway, it seemed to connect OK and I was looking at all the connector
pins etc etc but I´m sure I missed something (obviously).
As soon as I get the standoffs I will take it apart and remount
everything again, then we will see.
Again thanks everyone for the help, appreciate it.

2012-11-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jim,

Yes, I understand the language problem. Sorry that I cannot communicate
in your native tongue.

There is an independent bias setting for the each microphone jack.

Since your microphones do not require bias, make certain bias is set not
turned on (indicated by a blank in the MIC SEL menu) for both the front
panel and the rear panel microphone jacks.

[Elecraft] Help with K3 Evaluation in Palo Alto

Hello Jay.
Before I got a vertical dipole, I used a 20 meter bazooka up 16 feet. I
worked all kinds of stations and a bunch of DX. I did this running 5 watts
and up to 25 watts. I have a K2, K3, and a KX3. They are great radios. It
goes without saying a better antenna is going to perform well, but at 16
feet, I am very pleased, and learning to appreciate QRP and CW.
Hope it helps, just wanted to share my story with you.

Jay -

I have a K3/10 and operate at about 10 watts all of the time.  I use an 10-40
meter inverted vee up about 30 feet from my QTH here in Salinas.  I have had
many SSB contacts with this set up on all bands, but mostly on 10, 20, and 15
meters.  The only problemI have had with DX is getting through the pileups with
only 10 watts, but persistence has paid off in many cases.  I would go the K3
route again if I did not have one already.

Is there anyone out there that has 2 of the 8-pole FM filters and would like
to swap for one an AM 8 -pole filter?

[Elecraft] Kat500 first impressions

2012-11-16 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

I received the KAT500 yesterday and immediately installed it in my shack to
replace an MFJ switch and an MFJ manual tuner. Three ports is just ideal for
my 2 antenna cables and the dummy load. My ultimate goal is to have one of
these mounted remotely where my antennas come down to a central point in the
back yard where I currently have an MFJ autotuner and a remote switch. The
KAT500 is a beauty and seems to be doing every thing we expect of it. It's
going to stay where it is so I have a 2nd one on order to go to the remote
location next spring. In the meantime I am using the shack installation to
investigate the feasibility of that remote operation.

I have had it communicate with the utility on the PC using both the USB
cable and the RS232 cable. Currently I have it communicating using the RS232
cable, a B&B serial Ethernet server and 100+ feet of CAT6 cable. So that
part of the feasibility study is a resounding "yes, I can have it that far
away". I haven't investigated what needs to be done to get the power to it.
My current thinking is to run something like 24-30V AC out there with a
rectifier/regulator to provide the 12-14V DC needed by the tuner. Initially
I might just run a 110V extention cord and a remote power supply. I doubt
the current 14V supply over 100' speaker wire will be sufficient (it works
for the MFJ tuner). As for weather protection, I can't see why the KAT500
shouldn't survive an environment where an MFJ indoor tuner anjd switch have
for more than 4 years.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 KXBC3 and NiZN batteries

2012-11-16 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ
I have ordered the KXBC3 for my KX3 and hope to install it soon. I know
nothing
about rechargeable batteries, and would like some guidance. Will the KXBC3
handle
automatic charging of any batteries I put into the battery pack? Do I just run
up to
15 VDC into the KX3 power jack and it automatically charges up whatever is
inside there?

I looked at the A123 batteries referenced below and they don't look like the
same
size as standard AA batteries. I believe the KX3 internal battery pack will
only
accommodate AA size batteries. Do the appropriate rechargeable batteries call
themselves AA size?

Thanks for the guidance! VY 73, Lance

Re: [Elecraft] Help with K3 Evaluation in Palo Alto

2012-11-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jay,

Why "shoot yourself in the foot" twice?
If you must have compromise antennas, that is one shot, and perhaps that
is unavoidable.
I ask why you would use a compromise transceiver with a compromise antenna.
The K3 will perform better than that compromise transceiver even with a
compromise antenna.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 help

2012-11-16 Thread Barry Simpson
Hi Bob

It sounds as though you have made the same mistake as I did yesterday with
my new KAT500. In my case I got the co-ax cable wrong.

However, from the way you describe it, I think you have misconnected the
control cables. You need to remove the existing cable between the K3 and
KPA500 from the KPA500 and connect it to the Xcvr socket on the KAT500.
Then you connect the new cable from the amp socket on the KAT500 to the
KPA500. You may have got the co-ax cable wrong as well but that will be
apparent if it still doesn't tune when you have corrected the control
cables.

Mine now works great. Please let me know how you go on.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 KXBC3 and NiZN batteries

2012-11-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Lance,

The KXBC3 will not charge just any kind of battery - it must be of the
NiMH chemistry if you are to be successful.
.
There are many battery chemistry types out there - in the AA size, the
most common rechargable is the NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) is one of the
more common, and that is the type that the KXBC3 was designed to charge.

Yes, there are more exotic batteries, but the one advantage of NiMH that
does not exist with many of the others is that should the rechargeables
be depleted and you need to operate, go to the nearest drug, grocery,
office supply, Walmart, K-Mart, etc and you can buy alkaline AA
batteries that will keep you going - other specialized battery types may
last longer or give higher voltages, but when they are depleted, you
cannot substitute commonly available AA batteries.

* KX3 Micro Manual is a handy reference to the Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual.
* The application includes the entire text of the Owner's Manual plus notes on
all firmware upgrades since the KX3 was introduced.
* An index is also included that has direct links to each indexed item. Just
tap the index entry and the application will jump to the appropriate location
in the Owner's Manual.
* There also hyperlinks on page numbers listed in the text of the Owner's
Manual. Tap the page number hyperlink and the application will jump to the
appropriate location in the text.
* A search tool is provided to allow full text search of each chapter of the
KX3 Owner's Manual.

The application is available in the App Store for $0.99. Enjoy.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CWT Function

2012-11-16 Thread Andrew Moore
I too found CWT "spot on" - pun intended. Accurate every time.

NR seems to make the signal a little raspier than I remember in the
past; haven't used it much in a few months but just happened to notice
it recently. Wonder if anything has changed. Then again, I've changed
antenna systems, have more local noise and have not tweaked it off
"default" settings, so I can't say for a fact that it's NR alone.

Re: [Elecraft] Kat500 first impressions

2012-11-16 Thread ab2tc
Hi again,

But there are bugs. Here is the first one I can reproduce 100%.

The setup is K3 and KAT500 only The aux cable is *not* connected and the the
utility is *not* running although the serial cable is connected. This is all
to keep things simple.

Steps to reproduce:
Select KAT500 mode to bypass and antenna to 3 (which in my case is my dummy
load).
Turn tuner off with a HOLD to the mode button.
Turn tuner back on. It comes back on antenna 1 which doesn't seem quite
right, but is no big deal.
Change the antenna back to 3.
Switch band on the K3.
Hold XMIT on the K3 to generate a tuning carrier (mine is now 20W as
recommended for the KAT500).
The tuner switches to antenna 1. This is 100% repeatable. This is bad.

The KAT500 will switch to your choice of antenna port after a band
change - you can choose 1, 2, 3 or last used (on that band).

[Elecraft] K3 Echo in TX Audio

2012-11-16 Thread James
I've just recently set the K3 up with N1MM to do SSB. I'm using VOX and
N1MM F key recordings. During a practice SS QSO, I received reports of a
"big echo" in my transmitted audio. After listening closer, I, too, heard
the echo in the MON.

I've never had this problem. But, then, I've always had the Heil Mic
plugged into the K3 Rear Panel; not through the computer.

Now the Heil Mic is plugged directly into Computer Mic In. Computer Line
Out directly into K3 Line In. Setup N1MM F key recorded messages. These
sound OK.

Is the MIC going thru the SoundCard doing something to add the echo? I
can't see any computer Soundcard settings that would indicate implementing
an audio echo effect.

I've reset audio controls on the K3: VOX, Mic Level, Compression, TX Gate &
Mon, etc. Speakers OFF. MIC SEL=Line In.

Anyone have any clues as to what I may be overdriving, have set wrong, not
adjusted properly, plugged into wrong place, etc, to produce "echoes"?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Echo in TX Audio

2012-11-16 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
Do you have the line out of the K3 connected to the line in of the
sound card? If so, disconnect it, and see of the echo goes away. The
sound card may be passing the line in out through to line out, which
you're feeding the K3's line in - that would capture the monitor audio
and feed it back to the K3. You may need to mute line in in the
playback mixer (in Windows).

Re: [Elecraft] {K3} Split when changing bands?

2012-11-16 Thread Gary K9GS
OK...I got this figured out.

I have SPLT SV set to "on" in the CONFIG/TECH MD menu.

As long as I change bands with the K3 and NOT by clicking on a spot in
the logging software, the K3 operates like it's supposed toNOT
turning off split and remembering the split setting by band.

However, if I change bands by clicking on a spot in the logging software
the logging software turns off the split when it changes bands. Thanks
to Joe W4TV for suggesting I check this.

I confirmed this with both Logger32 and N1MM.

I do not believe there is a way to defeat this with either logging
program, unfortunately. At least for day-to-day operating with Logger32
that would be nice to be able to select the split behavior.

Thanks for all the responses on and off the reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] With all the problems...

2012-11-16 Thread Al Lorona
This is great advice, Matt. A long while ago someone posted here that they were
annoyed that a replacement diode for their kit took too long to arrive from
Elecraft. (The customer had lost the original diode or something like that and
Elecraft sent him a new one without charging him for it.) I replied to the user
that carelessness on his part should not have constituted an emergency on
Elecraft's part, and besides, since he was receiving the part for free the
least
he could have done is offered to pay for it. I know from experience that it is
hard practicing such great customer service when all you get in return is a
swift kick in the face!

Here's to civility, manners, and a little gratitude now and then, which the
great majority here seem to understand well.
