[Elecraft] KAT500 and SWR

2012-12-05 Thread Phil Hystad
I am having trouble getting a reasonably low SWR on the 80-meter band with the
KAT500. Maybe someone can help by confirming that this is the best I should
expect or maybe give me hints to see if something better is achievable.

On the frequency 3.569 MHz I regular operate each evening on a CW Net. My best
SWR from the KAT500 has been around 1.75:1 and tonight the best I was able to
achieve was 1.99 to 2.01 to 1.

Yet, using my other manual tuner, my Palstar AT1KM, I easily tune to a 1.0:1
SWR, absolutely flat.

Another puzzle is that I can get a descent SWR on another much used frequency
(3.975 MHz) of about 1.25:1. But, on the AT1KM I can also easily achieve a
1.0:1 SWR. Indeed, the tuned position for inductor and capacitor for the 3.569
and the 3.975 frequencies are not too far apart on the AT1KM but the KAT500
really struggles to get an SWR below 2:1 and half the time it does not.

Note: all of my SWR readings are measured by multiple devices that all
indicate similar readings and the KAT500 I am also using the KAT500 Utility to
see the SWR and it is very close to my other readings so I am fairly sure these
SWR values are reasonably accurate.

Has anyone else had trouble using the KAT500 to tune an antenna to a particular
frequency where other manual tuners have had an easy time at it?

I appreciate your comments and suggestions. By the way, no problems at all on
all other bands and testing using two different antennas. It seems the only
problem is on the low end of the 80 meter band.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for December 2nd & 3rd, 2012

2012-12-05 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Conditions for both nets were rather poor on Sunday. Only today has
propagation improved enough to have a decent sked. I may need to move
the forty meter net earlier to follow the sun. From dusk to about an
hour later the band is open from here further to the east. Any later
and the band is changing rapidly. One minute a station is loud and the
next they are gone.

The odd thing was that Ken was stronger on 40 meters than on 20 m.
Scott told me he heard me on 40 m but not well enough to attempt a
checkin. He is about 350 miles or so SE of Ken. He must be between
bounces for me while Ken is near one of my hops.

   On to the lists =>

  On 14049.5 kHz at 2300z:
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866
KN5L - John - TX - KX1 - 1658
W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139

  On 7045 kHz at 0200z:
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139

In 1965 I built what was probably my third or fourth kit: a Knight
Kit - Star Roamer. My K3 is much better; however, it did not require me
to buck and mow many bales of hay nor trap dozens of muskrats.

Today the weather here was wonderful. Sunny and warm at 45
degrees. Very nice for me to collect another month's worth of wood and
enjoy the great outdoors. The peace and quiet was interrupted by the
grader shifting the gravel around on my road. But, after his ten passes,
I could hear him moving off into the distance and there was peace
again. It is odd to see him now since this road has not been plowed in
two years. I normally only see him when the snow is too deep and
someone has convinced the powers that be in Hillsboro that there is
actually snow out here :) If we can call often enough they can be
convinced to plow the snow in only four or five days. The joys of
living far out in the boonies.

   Until next week stay well,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

2012-12-05 Thread David Gilbert

This may sound harsh but it seems to me that any company (no matter how
small) that is unable to deliver products in a reasonable amount of time
and is unwilling to respond in a reasonable amount of time to emails or
phone calls does not deserve to be in business ... period. In my
opinion they have engaged in commerce under false pretenses. To imply
that customers should simply cut laggard companies some slack puts the
burden here on the wrong side of the transaction ... any company that is
unable to be responsive per commonly accepted criteria should state that
up front before they accept your order.

In the case of Idiom Press, a little searching on eHam.net and various
reflector archives clearly shows that they have roughly a ten year
history of behaving like this. It's the rule, not the occasional "bump".

Some QRP suppliers, like Dave Benson and Steve Weber, are good

Bottom line, if you are in a big hurry, call them and talk to them

some of these operations promise more than they can handle, but most

Re: [Elecraft] Are you satisfied with your K3?

2012-12-05 Thread Dyarnes

Hi All,

Obviously most of the responders here are either K3 owners, or K3 potential
owners, who have experienced the quality of this radio. So, am I totally
satisfied? No! Am I reasonably satisfied? Absolutely!

The K3 is a wonderful radio, and something all of us who own one can be very
proud of having. However, it is not the "perfect" radio, nor will it ever
be such. But then, again, I never expected it to be the perfect radio!

I don't care how much money you spend, you will never own the perfect radio.
No radio will ever have the complete (or even nearly complete) compliment of
features and performance that we seek. If that were possible, then most, or
all, companies would go out of business! More importantly, it just isn't
achievable.

I don't care how many features you put in the K3, or any other radio,
someone will have an issue--or ten issues! What Elecraft achieved with the
K3 is a top quality radio at a greatly reduced cost. That's extremely
significant!

The K3 is NOT the perfect radio for everyone, but it is the perfect radio
for most of us. There are too many variables, and personal preferences, to
satisfy the entire ham community. Many of the shortcomings are well
founded, but not necessarily reasonable, for all that many users. I see all
this Sturm und Drang" about this feature or that feature, and I have to
wonder whether or not it really matters! Performance wise the K3 is near
the absolute top end. Ergonomically, it also is near the top. Nonetheless,
some folks are not happy, and never would be, with something specifically
designed along the line of the K3. To those folks I simply say "go ahead"
and buy whatever better meets your wants and desires. However, you won't
achieve much, if any, improvement in performance. If you can detect a
significantly better performing radio, then your ear is much better than
mine.

Elecraft has an incredible advantage over other manufacturers because they
have a support team that is second to none. If you have a problem, they
will fix it--one way or another!!! Other manufacturers will somewhat
similarly "fix your radio", but not necessarily to the extent of making it
better than it was when you bought it. Elecraft will "fix it", and it all
probability make it even better!

Some features are lacking in the K3, and some are very significant.
However, just about everything that could be crammed into the K3 has been.
If it isn't there now, it very well may be with software upgrades. No other
manufacturer is so dedicated to keeping their "top line" radio so forward
capable. Even though other manufacturers have adopted the "firmware
upgrade" capability, nobody is doing more with that capability than
Elecraft! Pure fact!

If the K3 doesn't meet your expectations, sell it! I seriously doubt you
will replace it without spending a great deal more. You won't gain much, if
anything, in performance, but you might get something that "fits you" more
appropriately. If your problem with the K3 was a specific performance
attribute, then possibly you will solve that, but somewhere there will be
some compromise!

Right now I don't anticipate ever needing more than what the K3 provides me.
That feeling may change, but I would bet large amounts of money that it will
take a very serious "up scaling" cost wise to achieve that. In the
meantime, so many of the "deficiencies" in the K3 are being addressed by
software upgrades, I can't imagine why I would become less convinced that I
now have the right radio. Who else is doing so much to achieve perfection
than Elecraft? They won't get there, but they keep trying

All you need to do, to truly see the value of a K3, is to compare features
and cost. If another manufacturer gets closer to your wants and needs, by
all means go for it! Somehow, though, I think you would be part of a very
small minority. The K3 was too well planned, and too well designed to be
easily outdone. Yes, something will come along that exceeds it, but not
anytime soon. When that happens, will it be enough better to justify my
switching? I doubt it. Either the cost, or the marginal improvement will
probably make that be unnecessary. Unless I do something stupid, and blow
up my K3, I'm probably set for a very long time!

Re: [Elecraft] Are you satisfied with your K3?

2012-12-05 Thread Matt Zilmer
Short answer: Yes, it is my Dream Machine.

Having owned a K2 since 2003 or so, I put in an order for K3 #24 while
Elecraft was in Visalia, 2007 (April or May). K3/10 #24, as a kit,
arrived in October, 2007. As far as I know #24 was the first or
second kit off the line.

I worked CQ WW using SSB and 10W right away. Nine new countries for
W6NIA right off the bat. To make sure credit goes where it should,
the receiver was so solid that I could hear a lot of the low-level DX
the big guns weren't copying. Most of it was in between, where the K3
excels.

My XYL gets the best friend award here, but the K3 would run a real
close second. It's fully loaded now, SubRX and a buncha filters,
every add-on available except for the PR-6. All mods are up to date
too.

I wouldn't have it any other way. Like another later poster, my list
of rigs runs on from about 1973 to present. About forty years. As
far as I'm concerned the K3 is the best value proposition in the HF
Amateur Radio industry, historically and present-day.

There is a lot more here about the high quality of tech and customer
support, and Elecraft's is legendary in our community (almost unhead
of across several consumer product sectors that I know well, also).
But this is very well known by now, and even newbies are aware that if
they buy their first rig from Elecraft they will have support that no
other manufacturer can possibly match.

Re: [Elecraft] Are you satisfied with your K3?

2012-12-05 Thread Nate Bargmann
I will second your motion.

My K3 is a solid performer after a bit over two years of near daily use
including phone and CW along with a smattering of digital modes. I have
yet to add the sub receiver since adding the P3 a bit over a year ago.
Having the visual element just hasn't gotten old.

This past weekend I operated as one of the Union Pacific Railroad 150th
anniversary special event operation stations. Most of the afternoon on
20m phone I was using a CM500 headset, which drives the K3 very easily,
and the ALS600 amplifier. I received many unsolicited reports of good
to excellent audio. I figure that any combination that makes me sound
good is a winner in my book. Also, using the K3's VOX is a pleasure,
especially with the noise gate enabled.

With the 2.1 kHz filter in slot 2 once I use the high cut to take out a
group that is 2 kHz below our 75m section nets in the morning, I simply
don't hear them and yet the audio fidelity of our net is still very good
from my speakers.

Perhaps it is my use of the receive equalization to roll off everything
above 3 kHz as much as I can and my use of the RF Gain control that I
have no fatigue at all listening to my K3. My backside gets tired of
the chair long before anything else!

Would I buy it again? Absolutely, without hesitation.

I have posted a lot of questions, complaints, and barbs regarding my K3 - which
I
built in February of this year. However, with the posts and emails I received
(that
were constructive in nature), I gained enough knowledge about the K3 and its
menus,
to send me in the right direction to correct what I perceive as K3 deficiencies.

Along the way, I have found the Cady Manual to be top notch and totally
necessary for
understanding the K3. I keep a file of posts made here and on the Yahoo Group
that
have been informative.

I make all my settings the "hard" way using the K3 menus, as I have experienced
failures when making changes via K3 EZ (possibly related to Win7).

Anyway, the long and short is that I am now very pleased with my K3 - it is a
keeper.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Tune in KAT500 Utility software broken?

2012-12-05 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The rest of that sentence is important. It reads.

"You can prevent automatic tuning by selecting the MAN (manual) mode. In
MAN, the KAT500 will automatically choose a new tuner setting based on the
band and antenna selected, but you must tap TUNE and then apply RF power to
initiate a tuning operation if needed."

That means that in MAN the KAT500 will not automatically run through a tune
sequence, choosing an L and C for minimum SWR, even if the SWR exceeds the
threshold for an automatic Tune operation. However, when you change
bands/frequency, the ATU will automatically switch to the previously
memorized settings for that frequency, or the settings for the closest
frequency that has been memorized.

We'll look at expanding on that in future revisions to make it clearer. (Too
many flavors of "automatic" happening in there ;-)

73, Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-

I get it. You HOLD the XMIT button on the K3 to tune the KAT500 and no need
to press TUNE on the KAT500 and then a button on the K3. You don't TAP the
ATU TUNE button when in BYPASS mode with the ATU installed (if using the
KAT500) because nothing happens except the screen reminds that you are in
BYPASS mode. There is room for some confusion and some omission in the
manual. For instance:

" You can prevent automatic tuning by selecting the MAN (manual) mode. In
MAN, the KAT500 will automatically choose a new tuner setting..." I guess
that makes sense to someone. In MAN mode the tuner automatically.
Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] ESD Protection for K3 Assembly

2012-12-05 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Since it has an alligator clip, connect it to the mains safety ground. Also
connect the mat to the same ground.

DO NOT attach the alligator clip to the edge of the mat. If there's a
terminal for the ground, fine, but the resistance of most mats is too high
to simply clamp an alligator clip onto the side.

You should find that there is about 1 megohm of resistance between the metal
terminal that rests against your wrist and the alligator clip at the end of
the cord. That is a built-in resistance designed to protect you from
dangerous electrical shock should you touch a "hot" circuit, but still low
enough to ensure that any charge on your body is dissipated rapidly --
provided the alligator clip is attached to a ground.

[Elecraft] KE7X K3 Book -- Second Edition

2012-12-05 Thread Cady, Fred
Hello all,
I have posted the new edition of "The Elecraft K3: Design,
Configuration, and Operation Second Edition" up on Lulu. I understand
there is a 20% discount code for December: DECBOOKS12

There aren't many significant changes in the second edition compared to
the first edition. The errata in the first edition have been fixed and
some explanations of K3 features have been improved. Measurements of the
new AGC THR and SLP parameters have been made and are included. Chapter
9 has been expanded to include a description of the P3's SVGA option,
and the indexing has been improved to help readers find information and
answer questions. (It even has references to the + Icon.)

If you have the first edition it probably isn't worth getting the second
edition.

I have deleted the pdf file choice on Lulu until I can figure out a way
to block nefarious copyright infringers from ripping me off and selling
overpriced copies on Amazon and eBay. Please email me (off the list) if
you are interested in the pdf or other electronic version.

If you don't like going through Lulu, see my website for alternative
purchasing.

73 and cheers,

Fred Cady

Re: [Elecraft] ESD Protection for K3 Assembly

2012-12-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Phil,

Connection to the AC ground should be adequate and safe - if a
receptacle is properly grounded, remove the screw in the center of the
cover plate and attach a terminal lug there.

If your station ground is connected by a heavy guage wire to the Utility
Entry ground point, then I will agree with your that the station ground
will do.

We all know that there are references to "station ground" that are
connected to driven ground rods that are NOT connected to the Utility
Entry ground.

I need to point out that not only is that a violation of NEC
grounding requirements, but it presents safety hazards for anyone in
contact with that station ground under AC wiring fault conditions. All
grounds must be connected together except for structures separated by
100 feet or more.

See the 2010 (or later) ARRL Handbook for further information.

I apologize if this sounds like a rant, but it is not - it is concern
for the safety of each and every ham.

Re: [Elecraft] ESD Protection for K3 Assembly

2012-12-05 Thread Alan Bloom

The important thing is that you and the device you are working on are at the
same potential (voltage). When you place the device on the anti-static mat,
it will be at the mat potential. So you should connect your wrist strap to
the mat. Most wrist straps have a snap that connects to a matching snap on
the mat.

It is also important that the soldering iron be at the same potential as any
device you are soldering with it. Assuming the soldering iron is grounded
to the electrical system safety ground, then the mat should be connected to
ground as well.

I used it on about 15 contacts yesterday, 20m .. What I "saw" on the
readings were every Report which was generated was >= +30 .

What I "heard" was that all the adjacent QRM crud was non-existent. In fact,
using "Shift" I could eliminate one of you guys 20hz away in a legitimate
QSO and still decode and get the +30 reports.

So I posited a question to the academics which revolved about the notion I
had that "If" the sig-rep is really +30, here, in the mind of the JT9-Genie
inside my Win7 machine, then that should mean that I could also hear down to
the typical level of -25 and decode.

So, my non-Professor of Radio Astronomy brain decided that a guy running
5 watts from France, who was getting +30 from me, should be able to reduce
power 20 db, and I should be able to decode him .. well, or her, but I dunno
any French Amateur Radio girls ennaweh, so "guys" stands.

However. it's a real Juggle for me, the Newbie-K3 driver, to try and balance
all the 4 to 6 setting possibilities and wind up with a visible trace.

I won't believe this is actually making weaker signals possible until I have
somebody systematically reduce the output power on his end of the planet
while i write down the sig-reps.

[Elecraft] K2 For Sale

2012-12-05 Thread K0ZL
I'm selling my K2/10, SN 01825, which has the following add-ons:
KSB2 SSB Option
K160RX - 160 Meter option
KAT2 20 W Internal ATU

It has a type A board, but with the following upgrades:
E850138 Temperature Compensated PLL Reference Upgrade
BFOMDKT BFO Toroid & PLL Ref Osc Xtal Upgrade
KSB2MDKT PSK 31 Upgrade for SSB Option
K2KSB2XTLS – 14 Matched Filter Crystals for K2 and KSB2
E850093 10M BPF, VFO/ALC Mod Kit
XFILMDKT 2nd Filter Upgrade for the K2
SSBCAPKT Wider Bandwidth Capacitor Kit
K2KEYMDKT Keying Bandwidth Mod Kit
E850089 Grill Cloth
K2ATOBKT All other A to B upgrades in addition to above
FWK2MCIO – MCU Firmware 2.04, IOC Firmware 1.09
FWSSB – SSB Firmware 1.08
Note: KAT2 Firmware is 1.07

I built it myself (including installing the upgrades) and it works well,
though I can't ever remember using it on CW. I've won a few SSB contests
with it running QRP. There isn't a scratch on it, though one of those
little screws that hold the plastic lens over the display is missing, and
the main dial is blemished from my finger turning it as if there were a
dimple there.

There is no microphone with it.

Pictures are available on request.

I really like this transceiver and always thought it was the best I've ever
owned. Then my wife blessed me with a K3 last Christmas, and I find that I
seldom use the K2 anymore. It's too nice to just gather dust, so now it's
for sale.

I'm asking $550.00, which includes USPS Priority Shipping anywhere in the
United States.

Please contact me off the list at ki0...@charter.net

73, Dan
K0ZL

[Elecraft] ESD Protection for K3 Assembly

2012-12-05 Thread Jay Krishna

Hi all,

I received my K3 kit yesterday and am setting up to start assembly. I bought an
ESD mat and a wrist band. I was wondering what I should connect the alligator
clip from the wrist band to, for best protection?

Thanks,

Me too, over a similar time period.
I was uncertain until I did the DSP upgrade, and installed 4.51.
So I just sold my 'backup' FT-1k Mk.V.

And my Super-Cmos III keyer from Idion Press is the best keyer I've ever used.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Tune in KAT500 Utility software broken?

2012-12-05 Thread Rick Bates
And after the KAT500 has learned enough (happens over time), remembering to
transmit a short taste of RF (TUNE or a few dits) to the KAT500 when
changing band segments (CW-Fone portions) so the KAT500 can adjust. This is
really important the lower the band.

Only the BAND information is sent to the KAT500, not the band segment.

Because of that, you'll find that the system will 'presume' nothing has
changed when you in band QSY and you'll want to leave the KPA500 offline for
that dit because even the momentary mismatch (while the KAT500 tunes) is
enough to fault the KPA500. That means additional time to clear the fault
etc.

It isn't a problem with the gear, but in adjusting the organic memory (me!)
for appropriate operating habits.

In short, after an in band QSY, inform the KAT500 by sending a couple dits.

Perhaps at some future date the wizards at Elecraft can update the K3
firmware to make the K3 AT Tune button function cause the KAT500 to act like
the KAT3 tuner functions, but it's pretty darned close to perfect now.

-Original Message-
From: KM4VX

In
MAN, the KAT500 will
automatically choose a new tuner setting..." I guess that makes sense to
someone. In MAN mode the tuner automatically. Thanks.

I used it on about 15 contacts yesterday, 20m .. What I "saw" on the
readings were every Report which was generated was >= +30 .

What I "heard" was that all the adjacent QRM crud was non-existent. In
fact, using "Shift" I could eliminate one of you guys 20hz away in a
legitimate QSO and still decode and get the +30 reports.

So I posited a question to the academics which revolved about the notion
I had that "If" the sig-rep is really +30, here, in the mind of the
JT9-Genie inside my Win7 machine, then that should mean that I could
also hear down to the typical level of -25 and decode.

So, my non-Professor of Radio Astronomy brain decided that a guy running
5 watts from France, who was getting +30 from me, should be able to reduce
power 20 db, and I should be able to decode him .. well, or her, but I
dunno any French Amateur Radio girls ennaweh, so "guys" stands.

However. it's a real Juggle for me, the Newbie-K3 driver, to try and
balance all the 4 to 6 setting possibilities and wind up with a visible
trace.

I won't believe this is actually making weaker signals possible until I
have somebody systematically reduce the output power on his end of the
planet while i write down the sig-reps.

'Doubting Thomas' you say? Ey-yup, true.

several days ago. They are directed towards armchair copy use - I doubt if
they would do much to enhance a DXer's or contester's use.

I have posted a lot of questions, complaints, and barbs regarding my K3
- which I built in February of this year. However, with the posts and emails
I received (that were constructive in nature), I gained enough knowledge
about the K3 and its menus, to send me in the right direction to correct
what I perceive as K3 deficiencies.

Along the way, I have found the Cady Manual to be top notch and totally
necessary for understanding the K3. I keep a file of posts made here and on
the Yahoo Group that have been informative.

I make all my settings the "hard" way using the K3 menus, as I have
experienced failures when making changes via K3 EZ (possibly related to
Win7).

Anyway, the long and short is that I am now very pleased with my K3 - it is
a keeper.

When you HOLD the NF button you get an adjustment feature which changes the

F1-1
F1-2

Is there some meaning that can be assigned to these two digit codes? The
first digit appears to be in the range [1..8] and the second digit appears
to be in the range [1..4]

[Elecraft] [K3] 4.60 - can't set agc on sub receiver separate from main receiver

2012-12-05 Thread Dave J. Barnes

I want to set up the main rx with fast agc and the sub with slow.

Hold B-Set
Tapping AGC button cancels B-Set without changing agc.

Even though sub rx shows AGC-S the sub rx is actually using fast agc
instead like on the main receiver. Changing

the main receiver agc also affects the sub rx agc.

Sub rx is NOT in diversity mode.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Tune in KAT500 Utility software broken?

2012-12-05 Thread N5GE

Aditional information:

Once you have tuned the KAT500 to a frequency, the tuner will use
it's memory to tune to that frequency any time you return to it or
near enough that a re- tune is not required. If, when RF is applied
tuning is required, the tuner will activate automatically and
re-tune.

Both of my posts under this thread refer to the way my KAT500
behaves.

Unfortunately not, Bill.

Probably the only serious transceiver out there that does full-duplex (rx on
while transmit) is the Sienna. I believe it supports transverters, so this may
make it popular with the satellite guys. Full-duplex is really awesome, a new
experience very much like listening in diversity for the first time.

Sold my TS-2000x and FT-847 back around the time I bought the K3 thus the

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Tune in KAT500 Utility software broken?

2012-12-05 Thread N5GE
You DO NOT have to push two buttons to tune with the KAT500.

Set the tune power for the K3 to 25W (See the manual for
instructions). After doing that, holding the XMIT button will
activate the tuner. When the KAT500 has finished tuning, tap the
XMIT button to return to RX.

In the Utility program:
Tapping the TUNE button on the "Operate" tab tells the tuner that the
next time you activate tuning it will do a completely new tuning
cycle at the current frequency. This is useful if you have changed
the antenna in such a way that it will need to be re-turned from
scratch.

That's backwards Ron.

Press and hold the ATU TUNE button to toggle the tuner state between the
AUTO and BYPASS states.

Tapping the ATU TUNE button causes the tuner to try to find a match if
the tuner is enabled (AUTO).

I take it that pressing the K3 Tune sends RF to invoke the KAT to tune by
nature of receiving the RF. Not that the KAT is triggered into Tune by a

Looking forward to getting KAT500.

The intent is for this to work the other way: tapping the K3's ATU TUNE
