I am not sure why happy K3 owners want to keep trying to ridicule the TS990.

I am a happy K3 owner and have been for over four years. I am also a happy
owner of a TS590, and TS2000.

Now I am a happy owner of a TS990.

Despite the critical comments regarding its size and the Rob Sherwood
numbers, it is a magnificent piece of equipment with certainly more and/or
more convenient facilities than the K3.

In practice, there is no material difference between being able to receive
signals on the TS990, TS590 and K3. I bought it because I like Kenwood as
well as Elecraft and I have had great past experience with previous Kenwood
rigs including the TS930.

The visual appearance and ergonomics appealed to me as well as the
functions and facilities and I have not been disappointed.

So there you are guys - it's horses for courses. I have four rigs and will
be keeping and using them all. So please give some thought before making
critical and sarcastic comments about competitors' equipment that you have
not used. I have not seen any similar type of comments on Kenwood
reflectors regarding Elecraft equipment.

I also have a KPA500 and KAT500 and previously built a K2.

[Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor

2013-06-05 Thread ANDY NEHAN
Hi, I have noted that when I use the above utility it does what I want apart
from the 50MHz band. I set it to the required frequency and mode (50.250 and
Data) yet when I upload that info to the K3 the mode becomes Data Rev. This
does NOT happen on any other band (and I use the memories to get me to the PSK
frequencies for all bands). On the other bands the frequency is correct and the
mode is Data.

I have tried changing the mode on the K3  to Data then reading that into the K3
Frequency Memory Editor and then re-exporting it back to the K3 - but the
result is the same.

I guess it must be obvious what I am doing wrong but it sure is puzzling me at
the moment!!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 using Pixel magnetic antenna

2013-06-05 Thread Fred Smith
The hookup is simple you use the receive antenna input on the K3 all else is
taken by the control unit itself works well and disables receiver during
transmit. Everything is plug-n-play with the antenna.

If you live in the country or a very low noise area you will see a small
improvement. On the other hand if it's a high noise area like in a town or
close to a city it makes a lot of difference. It will give you directional
performance also and turns with a small TV rotor.

I live in the country on a farm and have seen very little improvements over
my other receive only antennas. My main reason for one was for 160m receive,
it was no help over my other antennas.

At this time have decided to sell the complete antenna in factory box. Just
a few months old with everything I bought extra for it 300' of coax, wire,
rotor cable, New RS TV rotor & control. This is also an excellent LOWFER
antenna as well.

Anyone interested contact me off board,

Treat the Pixel as a second antenna. You will need the KXV3 for this.
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3_Antenna_Routing.pdf should answer your
questions.

Use the automatic disable feature of the Pixel's DC power coupler. The power
coupler manual provides a hook up diagram for that purpose.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 using Pixel magnetic antenna

2013-06-05 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Smith,

You've probably read all of the eHam reviews so you have a basic
understanding of the Pixel loop. As others have stated it hooks up easily to
the K3 using the KXV3A board. The transmit protection feature provided by
Pixel is very reliable and easy to implement. Compared to my vertical it is
a vast improvement on 80 and 40 meters. On 30 meters sometimes it is better
and sometimes not. I use a hex beam on 20 and above and the loop can't
compete with a directional antenna. On 160 meters I have a pretty quiet
dipole so generally the dipole and the loop are equals.

When conditions exhibit in and out fading the loop is very effective with a
sub receiver in diversity mode. Without in/out fading it's usually
sufficient to just press the K3 RX ANT button to quickly decide whether the
loop or your main antenna is better. If you have a sub receiver you can use
a simple external splitter to send the loop signal to both the KXV3A input
and the sub receiver aux input.

I originally had the loop at about 8 feet high and it worked very well. I
later raised it to about 22 feet and it works about the same. Try to keep it
clear of your house as it will pick up electrical noise from the house when
it is pointed in that direction.

73,
Mike K2MK

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor

2013-06-05 Thread ANDY NEHAN
Thanks its the 1.1.252.0 version and yes I am using it to program the K3. I
found a later version (1.3.3.0)  which I downloaded and tried and got the same
results - I did note 3 "Writememory2state.Ontimerexpiry" messages.

Hope this clarifies things.

What K3 Frequency Memory Editor version are you using?  And you're using it
with a K3, not a KX3, right?

This is in the Help - About screen.

I have bought the book again (second revision), you can't have too many of
Fred's books 8>). Wish I had the gift he has, Fred will a discount apply
later for the PDF version with a book purchase? If it does I will buy it
also I do really like the PDF for the KX3 but have the book also.

FYI for some on the reflector I did print a reduced size like his
mini-manual with my printer of the PDF printed on both sides. You can make
them any size you want I found out by accident on another document last
week.

[Elecraft] Building Mistake

2013-06-05 Thread kevinemtid @tvcconnect.net
Hi Stan, I try to spin the piece around and take a look from a different
view and count the pins again. This especially easy when you are using a
vise or holder of some sort. And also starting your count from a different
point than where you started from may help.

 Don't Give up!

Just take your time and Enjoy the process. You'll be done before you know
it!

Re: [Elecraft] RES: TS-990

2013-06-05 Thread Terry Schieler
Back in the late 80's I ordered a TS-950 sight-unseen from a catalog. It was
to replace my trusty TS-180SAT. When it arrived I thought they'd accidently
sent me TWO 950's in the same box. I had not paid any attention to the size
and weight specs of the rig when I ordered it. It was so huge, there was no
room for anything on the front of the operating desk once the 950 was in place.
I boxed it up and sent it back. I was stronger then but knew that I would
(hopefully) be growing old and would need help moving that beast.

I recently looked at the specs of the 990 and knew it would be a back-breaker
too.

[Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3

2013-06-05 Thread Dick, WN3R
This has to be one the very best accessories ever made for a radio. After
seeing the KX3, I thought it could become the ONE radio Ecomm groups could
standardize on if it were "hardened" in some way.

Scott, AK6Q, did it. His website is www.gemsproducts.com

In typical ham style, I didn't read the instructions. I simply loosened the
four thumb turn screws, removed the 4 small Phillips screws, took the nut off
the mic connector, and replaced the panels. It took just a few minutes. After
reading the instructions, I see I did it all wrong, but still with a good
result. I never opened the radio.

Re: [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3

2013-06-05 Thread Lee Stephens

There were instructions? I thought that paper was to keep the side
panels from scratching each other ;)

It only took mere minutes to install the side plates. The cover keeps
me from scratching the display or tweaking knobs when I put the radio
in the backpack. The Lexan is a little thinner than I would have
thoughtbut it is Lexan and I doubt I'll ever break it. Nice to
see the plates were ground to metal at all the appropriate places
instead of me having to do it myself.

To be honest...I think Elecraft should buy Scott out and ship new
KX3's from the factory this way.

Re: [Elecraft] TS-990

2013-06-05 Thread Al Lorona
The weight of rigs from Japan has more to do with the choice of steel for the
chassis instead of aluminum, and certainly the size of the TS-990 is the right
size for many people. But another observation is that when you look at the
schematic diagrams of Japanese rigs they are unbelievably complicated. There
are easily ten times as many paths, components, connectors, and devices as the
typical American rig, making it extremely difficult to follow signal flow on
these enormously dense circuits. When I first obtained an Elecraft K2, I
couldn't believe how simple it was. The schematic looked pretty much like the
occasional homebrew transceiver you see in QST, and yet the specs were every
bit
as good as Japanese rigs costing (and weighing) way more. I have always
wondered
whether Japanese transceivers are way over-engineered-- and thus more
expensive,
heavier, and larger-- than they have to be.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 building mistake - my blindspot

2013-06-05 Thread Edward R Cole

the same steps you went over the first time when you installed the

to look right past the problem, a lot like proofreading what you've just
written. The key is to have some mechanism, separate from just looking
at the construction steps, to yield a check."
--
I've found separating a project into steps and checking/testing after
a break (next day is best) helps to see things with a fresh
perspective. It also helps to keep multiple mistakes from clouding
the issue. One can often make a few ohmmeter tests to see if
continuity exists (or doesn't). Measuring expected voltage levels or
signals can reveal a missed step or error.

The same approach works when writing up a technical
piece. Professional tech writing never leaves proof reading to the
original author. In my experience my work was reviewed by at minimum
two other people. After each review the original author gets to see
the results of proofing and make corrections. After a few review
loops the product approaches nearly no errors either in composition
or technical accuracy. When I did not have the benefit of a
reviewer, I resorted to proofing after a sufficient time away from
writing. Repetition of reviewing your work also helps. Spell
checkers give one almost the same benefit of having a second pair of
eyes read your draft.

Of course when applying this to building your favorite project it is
hard not to resist "just plugging it in...and hoping for no 'smoke'
". This, too often, results in letting out some smoke --- oops!

One rule I always made in repair work was the final functional test
after the item was fully reassembled and supposedly
"repaired". Stuff can happen that will leave a contact or connector
not fully made. The "Final" test is where you catch that. Nothing
more embarrassing then to show a customer the "repaired" item and
have it not work!

My old TS-930S was 40 lbs and dominated the top of an executive desk. I

Together, they are a few ounces short of 10 lbs. Never again.

2013-06-05 Thread Rick Wheeler
While this thread is getting a little long in the tooth, Al brings up some very
interesting points. Yes, Kenwood, Icom, and Yaesu do make fine transceivers,
but it does seem the Elecraft rigs perform as well and better in many cases
with simpler schematics. Me, far from being an electronics guru, would like to
have someone offer up an explanation as to if Elecraft rigs are indeed simpler
generally and if so why they perform as well or better in many cases. Hurry
though, I think this thread is due to be shut down soon!

[Elecraft] KX3 external speaker suggestion> West Mountain Clear Speaker DSP powered

2013-06-05 Thread Jeff Drew

Im sure that all of us have been experimenting with trying to select a good
external speaker for the KX3.

I have tried the Iphone "bubble speakers" both in mono and stereo. The
crackling and static sounds were hard on my ears. In searching my junk box i
noticed a "Clear Speaker" from West Mountain. Yes it is a powered DSP speaker
but the fidelity is superb, quiet, no more harsh static sounds. I run my KX3
with a small power supply so getting power to the speaker was a not a problem.
I can tell the difference is remarkable. It is 1/2 the size of the radio but
the sound is soothing to the HAM ears! I recommend highly.

Although I'm not a real fan of Bose products I highly recommend the Bose
Companion powered speakers. About $ 70 at Sam's Club as I recall. I found out
about these from the Flex reflector. They sound very nice and are RF
bulletproof. Have 2 inputs as well. Have my KX-2 on one and a TS-590S on the
other. 2 thumbs up !
BTW-I bought a pair of the West Mountains for my next door neighbor who was

Rick I agree with you on this thread being drawn out, and should go quietly to
the curb.
However, you have brought up a very valid question about Elecraft simple but
effective products.
I think you should start another thread with your question as the heading.
It would be interesting to hear other views and opinions on why such a simple
radio stands head and shoulders
with the back breaking behemoths that end up on some desks.

Re: [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3

2013-06-05 Thread Rick Bates
I would like to move the entire K line as a complete already assembled
package. (I can use another radio for my remote operations.)

I'd like to see a GOTA/travel case for the entire K line that has the
following features:

It must be RUGGED!
Nice appearance during use
Allows protected safe movement of the ENTIRE station as a single unit
Room for accessories (SLUSB for example)
Extra space used for 'stuff' during shipping (change of clothes?)
Has complete secure (lockable) covering during movement
Allows for excellent cooling during operation (take the entire back off?)
No set up once moved; simply connect power, laptop and antennas, it's done

Basically a nice box (XYL approved), remove the front and rear covers for
radio use and secure enough that you would be comfortable for the airline
gorillas to toss underhand. Besides for flying to a new location, it would
make my station much easier to move into the RV. It doesn't have to be a
tower, a cube would be fine, as long as I don't have to (un)assemble the
wires (too many, makes it a pain to move).

Keeping the price under a few hundred $US would be a great bonus too.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

2013-06-05 Thread K8RS
Group,
How do you access the KAT500 Utility? I do not see a COM port that
is connected to the KAT500. If I have the K3, the P3, the KPA500 and the
KAT500 all connected together with the proper cabling and everything is working
fine, where does the KAT500 Utility get its COM port? I have tried connecting
the PC data cable up, but no COM shows that the Utility recognizes. What’s the
secret here? I’m missing something and there are no directions in the manual
that helps.

[Elecraft] K-line travel case

2013-06-05 Thread Walter Underwood
This sound like the cases used to move AV equipment around for stage shows.

I would search for "av travel case".

There are a lot of options, B&H photo lists 367 rack cases:

In my opinion, it's because Elecraft is more tuned in to users. Elecraft's
owners and many of their staff are active hams. They also directly monitor
lists such as this one for user input (and respond accordingly). Elegant
simplicity of design focused on real user needs is always a winning
combination (e.g. Apple comes to mind). Kenwood came closest to this with
the TS-930S but lost their way with succeeding models (although the TS-590S
is a nice step in the right direction).

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

2013-06-05 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KAT500 Utility is a Host PC program. The KAT500 has a serial (COMM) port
connector on its back panel that uses a 3.5mm TRS connector, similar to the
KX3, XG3, W1, and W2. Elecraft supplies a KXUSB USB to Serial Adapter that has
a USB connector on the Host PC end and a 3.5 mm TRS plug on the KAT500 end.
You may also use a KXSER cable, which has a 9-pin D-shell connector on one end
and a 3.5mm TRS plug on the other.

I use a four-port USB to Serial Adapter and a couple of KXSER cables. I
connect these four ports to a K3/P3, a KPA500, a KAT500 (with a KXSER cable)
and to a KX3 or XG3 (also with a KXSER cable).

If you plug one end of the KXUSB into the back panel of the KAT500 (the "PC
DATA" port) and the USB end into your PC, Windows should install a device
driver for that USB cable and provide a COM port address for it. If you're not
sure which COM port it is, see the KAT500 Utility Help text on "Troubleshooting
- Finding the right serial port". The KXUSB uses an FTDI chip set, and its COM
port should appear and disappear from the Device Manager list of COM ports as
you insert and remove the USB connector from the PC.

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 Book From Lulu

2013-06-05 Thread Cady, Fred
Thanks Fred. I'm sorry but there are just too many K3 books out there to
retroactively (or in fairness, concurrently) a book/pdf package deal. It's best
just to go to Lulu when there is a discount code.

BTW, the code JUNEBOOKS13 seems to be active now for the month of June. (All
caps, wait a while for it to be accepted by lulu, and I don't think it works
outside the US.)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 external speaker suggestion> West Mountain Clear Speaker DSP powered

2013-06-05 Thread Ariel Jacala
Logitech has a stereo speaker that works great. It is meant for the IPAD but
it fits Rose's case perfect (does not take up much room) and works in stereo so
you can hear the subreceiver when working split. Once charged - runs for a
long time on internal battery. Charged via USB. A USB port on a DC
distribution box will keep it running indefinitely.

[Elecraft] OT: RE: SideKX Panel and cover for KX3

2013-06-05 Thread Ariel Jacala
I built something similar to what Rick wanted below. I called it my "Shack in
a Box" project. It is described in more detail with photos at the following
link:
http://ny4g.blogspot.com/2012/06/shack-in-box-project.html
Features: The antennas connect to the box. - two HF antennasFront cover to
keep kids and unauthorized persons outBack cover with holes for ventilationTwo
large handles for transportCompartment for a 30 amp hour SLA - will run for
days at QRP powerProvisions for two rigsDrawer for accessoriesLED to keep track
of battery charge status - user settable (low range red, high range green and
amber in between)
The FT897 in the blog picture has since been replaced by a KX3 as shown by the
pic in the following link
http://ny4g.blogspot.com/2013/02/finally-got-qrp-dxcc.html
The laptop now runs NaP3.
I am thinking of building another "Shack-in-a-box Gen 2" tailor made to fit the
KXPA100. It may fit in where the Hardrock50 is in now but not sure of the
KXPA100 dimensions.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 external speaker suggestion> West Mountain Clear Speaker DSP powered

2013-06-05 Thread Andy McMullin
Thanks for the info guys.

Any chance you could say which models from Bose or Logitech?

For example, over here in the UK there are at least five different Bose
"Companion" speakers. None as cheap as $70 - the cheapest being around $120.
The most expensive over $400!!

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3

2013-06-05 Thread kk5na
Got my side panels and cover today. It took less time to put on the SideKX
panels and cover then it is taking for this email. I too did not need to
open the case.

Nice simple process and VERY nice protection for the KX3. No
interference with operation on the KX3.

I simply loosened the
four thumb turn screws, removed the 4 small Phillips screws, took the nut
off the mic connector, and replaced the panels. It took just a few minutes.
After reading the instructions, I see I did it all wrong, but still with a
good result. I never opened the radio.

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day and MAcloggerDx Software

2013-06-05 Thread Rick Bates
I'll submit this as an option too across Mac, PC and linux platforms, all at
the same time.

FDLog http://www.fdlog.info/ requires the installation of Python 2.7x (NOT
3) which is painless (if Vista/Win7/Win8 install off the ROOT directory).
It's what we use at our FD site (the author attends) but we also take the
time to build up a local WiFi network for the computers which enables us to
see who is active on what band, making each node up to date on the entire
log (so if one node crumps, nothing is lost), time keeping and other nerdy
features.

As with any software, get used to it BEFORE you need it. ;o)

I have that exact model... and it works nicely with my KX3... and my
iPad, too. Connection is via a 3.5mm TRS plug. Works with virtually
all MP3 players, or items with a stereo earphone port... like KX3. :)

Gotta second Wayne & Ray's suggestion. Bought a set of the Chill Pill speakers
and haven't looked back. Packed up they are light and compact and set up they
give plenty of audio. You can set them far enough apart that you can use Dual
Watch with VFO A on the left and VFO B on the right just like the K3 and bust
pileups to your heart's content.

Re: [Elecraft] TS-990

2013-06-05 Thread Jim Lowman
I was very surprised at the fact that the TS-990 didn't place higher in
the Sherwood ratings. I would have thought that it would have been on
par with the FTDX-5000.

However, for those who abhor menus, the 990 may be the answer to your
prayers. With that many front-panel controls, I'd be surprised if there
are any menus involved.

Although the service centers for Yaesu and Kenwood are convenient to my
location, as is Elecraft, I think I'll stay with Elecraft because of
their excellent product support.

They have missed the mark for user needs. They fail miserably in the US for

RumLog is an excellent program, but I prefer MLDX overall, and use it as my

otherwise, Cabrillo, as well as v4 log.dat files and Google KML. it supports
eQSL and LoTW, QRZ and other online call sign databases, ClubLog, and has a

When's the last time you looked at MLDX on your screen? It has evolved and

Lew,

When was the last time? Probably about two weeks ago.

I have run both MLDX and RUMlog / RUMped together for over 5 years. When you
spend as much as I have for MLDX you keep giving it a try.

I find that for my operating, DX'ing and casual contesting the DL2RUM software
can't be beat, especially for a K3 owner.

The K3 control screen with direct access to macros, etc. and the direct access
to FSK-D and PSK-D are my main methods for those modes.

At any rate, this is not the place for a long discussion about Mac logging
programs but I would be glad to carry on an exchange via email.

BTW, the ESM mode in RUMped is a total joy to use. Two Enter keys and move on.
 Love it!

[Elecraft] KAT500 utility software request

2013-06-05 Thread goldtr8

Dear Elecraft,

I would like to request a simple software enchancement to the KAT500
utility software.

Is it possible to allow in the future releases the ability to to size
the window by dragging the window to a larger or smaller footprint on
the screen.

I like to use the utility for changing antennas but it wants to cover
the programs I am using. If I could shrink it more it would be more
screen friendly.

Thank you for considering my request.

I'll do what I can to make the pages resizable. The minimum size is constrained

Hi,

Not sure what your problem is. The utility behaves just like any other
Windows program. It can be moved around and resized as you wish. There is a
minimum size for its window but unless your screen is really tiny that
should not be a problem. I don't think there is anything the program
developer can do to help you.

[Elecraft] Pig Knob

2013-06-05 Thread Fred Jensen

OK, I promised I would post my results so here they are.

It works, out of the box. I'm still on the default button settings
although I did change the fast settings for the knob and it is great.
Big problem for me is what to program into the buttons. The programming
is easy, the *what,* not so much. For the record, I'm a K3, no second
receiver.

Having a knob on the desk is really nice. My operating position is a
bit cramped. I have a small shelf, KPA500, paddle, and bug on the desk,
K3 and P3 above, maybe 2" [6cm] above it, and KAT500 and FT-847 on top.
This results in my right hand elevated to operate the K3 Big Knob,
which in contests leads to shoulder fatigue [shoulder got pretty
seriously fatigued 40+ years ago, not fun now]. And, unfortunately,
while I'm left-handed, this is some built-in furniture and sort of
right-ish.

While, like most lefties, I've adapted to the Tyranny of the Majority,
:-) I think I may be able to reposition some of the gear a little and
get the PK over to the left of the laptop, which would be sooo cool!
Control my radio from left or right!

So far, I've had no problem with the PK moving around on the desk. I
tend to grip it when punching the buttons, although at this point I
don't have any of them programmed for what I want so I don't do that much.

The knob has two dimples, not sure why, I might be missing something
here, but it is exactly at the right height for my hand. I got what I
was looking for with the Pig Knob, I may have gotten much more after I
integrate it into my operating regime. Had the same integration issues
when I got the P3.

I just installed the SideKX yesterday and agree they are very useful and a
great addition to the KX3 - what a nice design! Only minor nit is that the
