[Elecraft] KX3 - Omit battery holder?

2013-06-22 Thread Chris Meagher
I'm presently at the stage of fitting battery holders into the KX3.
I'm dubious about the amount of flexing that the holders have to take, in
order to get the screws secure.
This is more of a problem with the holder that sits over the square shield,
as it has to bend over the shield.
I rather don't like the way this is engineered.

Seeing that I'm averse to internal batteries anyway, previous bad
experience with portable gear, and having read the warnings of potential
serious damage if something goes awry with the holder, I plan to omit the
holders altogether.

The question is - can I fit the holders screws threaded all the way in, so
that the heads touch the board, and not suffer some shorting problem? I
think it would be OK, but would like informed opinion just in case.

Many thanks reflector people

Re: [Elecraft] How to determine K3 filter type - 5-pole or 8-pole

2013-06-22 Thread Oliver Dröse
Not a 100% safe way to tell so. A lot of OPs (myself included) let their
filters switch in earlier already. I.e. my 400 Hz 8 pole filter is switched
in at 500 Hz DSP bandwidth (exactly that is reflected in the filter setup in
K3 Utility) already so with Don's suggestion you would think it's a 5 pole
filter - not true. The most reliable way is certainly the checking the
filters themselves, i.e. hardware. Offset settings *might* be another way as
8 pole filters normally do not have an offset while 5 poles have. But even
that might not be 100% ... so take a look at the hardware and be sure what
you have. ;-)

Mike,

The K3 Utility configuration tab can tell you which filters are installed.
You can tell from the filter width whether it is an 8 pole or a 5 pole -
compare the installed widths with the filter listing on the Elecraft order
page (that page specifies 5 pole and 8 pole).

Re: [Elecraft] Colorado to New Zealand on 10 watts

2013-06-22 Thread Fred Smith
Hi Doug

I have replaced all my cable both above and buried with LMR-400 series coax.
In fact after doing testing I now use the DXE series MAX400 (best prices and
free shipping) same properties and you get it all in one coax DB/UF/400
combined. I recently replaced about 500' of older 7 yr old coax for it on
towers and buried. For QRP I always use the lowest loss coax at home where I
have longer than 10-15' of coax.

I don't want to lose any of my signal from the antenna to the radio so I
always use the best coax I can for all HF apps, coax is cheap for what it
does and you expect of it.

Well, I just replaced my 12 year old buried feed line with some new
double-shielded RG-8X. Just to test it out, I connected the antenna system
to the KX3. My antenna system consists of 3 trap dipoles: 80/40,
30/17/12 and 20/15/10. I switched to 17 and tuned around. I heard ZL1BD
calling CQ. After a few tries Al came back to me with 100% copy.
I wouldn't exactly call the band wide open. But, that was a very impressive
QSO. For me, after 52 years of hamming - that was a record breaker.

See? QRP DOES work!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Omit battery holder?

2013-06-22 Thread Fred Smith
Hi Chris

If you choose not to install the batteries you will be losing one of the
major functions of this fine radio and true portable operation. Another
problem is the clock and the memory without batteries to maintain them and
all the settings.

If you plan to have external power hooked to it at all times you will fine
with no power outages. Out of the thousands sold I have never saw a post by
anyone who didn't have a battery holder. I would never remove mine for sure
and have 3 extra sets of batteries ready and charged to go in if needed plus
a 7 ah for a spare.

[Elecraft] K1 Relays Not Working

2013-06-22 Thread Richard Crispi
Hi,
I'm in the process of building K1 #3224 and all was going well until this
evening. I'm at the point in Chap. 7 Alignment and Test, Part 1 "Band-Pass
Filter Alignment" (pg. 40). I was able to align B1 (40 meters) but when I
attempted to start B2 (30 meters) I realized that the relays were not
switching and I could still hear the 40 meter signals although the
frequency display showed the 30 meter frequency. Everything else up to
this point seems to be working fine but no relays are switching; not on
power up or when I try to change bands.
All the resistance checks I did according to the manual were right on. I
checked for misplaced components, shorts, unsoldered components, components
in backwards or in the wrong place on the filter board but everything
checks out OK.
I measured the voltages on U1 on the filter board and got the following:
Pin1 0v
Pin2 0v
Pin3 0.85v
Pin 4 5.94v
Pin 5-120v
Pin 135.5v
Pin 145.9v
Pin 152.2v
Pin 162.1v
Pin 17-180v
I was powering the radio with 12.9 volts.
According to the DC voltage table on pg 7 Appendix E the only voltages that
are off are the voltages on pins 15 and 16. According to the filter board
schematic in Appendix B these two pins connect to Z1 the resonator.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Rich Crispi K1YRW

Re: [Elecraft] K2 sn 4900-5000 - Upgrades needed?

2013-06-22 Thread Bill W4ZV
Ciao Enzo,

The last major mod to the K2 was for S/N 4060 and above using Revision B
PCB, so you should be OK with S/Ns above 4900. There have been a few other
worthwhile mods such as setting AGC level and the Magnetic Level Shielding
Kit but these are not absolutely necessary for most applications. LA3ZA has
a very nice summary of most K2 mods with links here:

It says something about the quality of Elecraft gear when this is the only
suggestion I can make . I have the K3 / P3 components of the K-Line and
quickly found that the K3 MUST be positioned to the right of the P3 for
right-handed ops like myself. This makes the two become one -- as my face
is directly in front of the P3, my right hand operates the K3. The
criticism is that the handle is now squished right in the middle. It would
make more sense to have the little rubber feet be between the P3 and K3 when
the K3 is on the right -- or at least punch the holes so the operator could
have the option during assembly.

Regardless, I find the K3/P3 combo to be the most intuitive panadapter setup
I have used. I built a SoftRock Ensemble II Rx recently and I find the
PC-based panadapters with the mouse controls to be very cumbersome -- all
that clicking around and twirling the mouse wheel. Also, the small P3
screen is just the right size for where my eyes are positioned up next to
the rig... sometimes bigger is not better.

And yes, I was reminded of how great the Elecraft Kool-Aid is this morning
after firing up my trusty K1 -- keep 'em coming guys!

Not quite. Dumb terminals were dumb. Rich web applications place a lot
of the user interface rendering onto the client. Not at all like dumb

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Relays Not Working (Richard Crispi)

2013-06-22 Thread Marc Schijven

Hello Richard,

I can give it a try to help you debugging the problem. I have some time (hi)
just completed an K1 upgrade KFL1-4, now QRV on 40m/30m/20m/17m!!

No Relays functioning, most likely U1 is not running its program, or does
not receive commands via AUX bus.

Question: Are you able to turn on/off the attennuator? Also the the
Attenuator is controlled by the microcontroller on the filter board.

I assume you can not.

--> U1 is not running it's program

Please double check:

1) P1 and P2, if you have all soldered, did not miss a pin. P2 contains
signals that makes communciation with the main controller possible.
2) Especially verify 6R/Aux signal from Main U1 pin8 to Filter U1 pin 13
RB7, did you forget the 100ohm?? R1

3) Double check if resonator is correct mounted?

Please let me know your next update on troubleshooting. Also let me know

Mainframes were single highly-reliable, very fast, extremely expensive

[Elecraft] KXBC3 says it's not installed.

2013-06-22 Thread Mike Weir
I have had the KXBC3 installed for some time now in the KX3. I have not been
able to read the voltage reading in VFO B for about 2 weeks now. Just thought
it was a menu setting and was going to look into it later. Today is field day
and the internal batteries were charged last night. I now wanted to get the
voltage reading up on VFO B. The rig works on the internal batteries but when I
check the menu BAT CHG the message I get is not inST. If I try to change it to
installed I am not able to do that.not sure what is up here.

Re: [Elecraft] microphones

2013-06-22 Thread GDanner
Robert,
Condenser & Dynamic microphones can both be used with a K3 or KX3.
The Astatic microphone may be a crystal of ceramic microphone element
(depending on when it was manufactured). There have been discussions on this
reflector that it may work without an interface; others say it needs an
interface.
I use an Astatic for my desk microphone for my K3; unfortunately the crystal
element was defective. I replaced the element with an electret from Radio
Shack. Works well with good reports.

[Elecraft] K3/100 For Sale

2013-06-22 Thread Sebastian, W4AS
I've been hesitant to place this ad here because of all the scams lately, but
here goes.

I am selling one of my K3s, serial number 6067 purchased as a kit on December
6, 2011.

I originally purchased this without the KPA3 internal 100 watt module, but
later on upgraded it.

This K3 has the following options installed:
KFL3A-2.7 (2.7 kHz 5 pole filter);
KFL3A-2.1 (2.1 kHz 8 pole filter);
KFLA3-500 (500 kHz 5 pole filter);
KXV3A RX Antenna, IF output and Transverter interface.

The current price of the above is approximately $2,400.
My asking price is $1973.00 plus shipping.

All of the above is in 100% operating condition, the reason for selling is this
was used primarily as a backup rig and has had little use.

Please contact me off this list for several pictures of each side of the rig
(there are a couple of minor scratches if you look very carefully on the top
right cover), as well as close up pictures showing the serial number and the
sales invoice #84661.

[Elecraft] Elecraft and Ten Tec

2013-06-22 Thread Rip R
It is time for a new rig; actually my first "new" rig in many years since I
typically buy a used rig from someone.
I own both Elecraft and Ten Tec; K-1 and Omni 6 among others. The choice I
am working on now is that of
either the K-3 or the Eagle. The K-3 with one filter for CW will be more
expensive than the Eagle with one filter (not by much)
and of course the Eagle is not a kit. I operate mostly CW for rag chew,
occasional contest, and DX. I do not
think that I need all the options shown on the Elecraft website order form.
I have never seen a K-3 up close,
but I am concerned about the menu that some say takes a lot of getting used
to. So several questions: is the menu
concern not really an issue (?) or is it ; do I need anything else in the
way of options (I have a good ATU) (?); and does
the physical size of the control face pose a problem in your opinion.
Please feel free to reply directly offline since
I am sure the list has heard these questions many times. I would like to
hear from you. 73s Roger W7RIP

[Elecraft] On the horns of a dilemma - upgrade K3 to 100w or buy KXPA100+ATU?

2013-06-22 Thread Jim Lowman

Sort of talking out loud here, but all opinions are welcome.

As the subject says, I'm debating as to whether to buy the KPA3 module
to bring my K3 to 100w, or spend about twice as much for the KXPA100+ATU.

The K3 and KX3 are so similar in specs and capabilities that I think
I'll be using the KX3 only for Field Day and other portable operation,
with the K3 as a home station.
But the KXPA100 offers the possibility to use it with my K2, K3/10 and
KX3, as well as other QRP radios in the shack, such as the FT-817 and
the QRP++

Dumb question: I have the KAT3 ATU Installed in the K3. Will it handle
100w if I upgrade to the KPA3, or will I have to replace it? I didn't
see an ATU with a higher power rating on the Elecraft order form.

Thanks for any thoughts and 73 de Jim - AD6CW

[Elecraft] KRC2 Troubleshooting

2013-06-22 Thread Brian F. Wruble
I have completed my KRC2 to the point of the smoke test. No smoke ... I
guess that is good.

When I power up, the LED lights (low), but no "short delay while the KRC2
performs diagnostics."

The first test step, "Holding F1" , fails to produce 12 volts at the 60M
source, or at any of ther terminals.

I have done about 2 hours of visual inspection. Every diode is correctly
oriented, as are all the ICs and the electrolytics.

I am beginning to wonder if I have the voltage regulator in backward,
though it looks exactly right.

TGhe schematic says I should have +5 volts at C14 and +12 V at C13. I have
the reverse. Before I try to unsolder U3, can someone confirm that those 2
caps are correctly labeled on the schematic?

Also can someone describe the pin numbering for U3. It really looks like
it is in there correctly.

Also, the +5V end of D8 reads +5V (which should be right), but the -12V end
of R12 is only -10.4V.

Do these clues suggest anything?

Tnx. 73 de Brian W3BW

Re: [Elecraft] microphones

2013-06-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

RC,

No, they are not interchangable.
The impedance is the problem. The unamplified D-104 (and other Astatic
crystal [or ceramic] element mics needs a high impedance to work into
and sound good. The K2 and K3 have a low impedance input.

If you have the amplified D-104, then it will drive the K2 or K3 just fine.
For the unamplified version, some have stated success by putting a 47k
to 1 megohm resistor in series with the AF line. I use an FET in the
base of my D-104 to change from high impedance to low (my D-104 needs
bias to power the FET).

One way to convert the microphone is to discard the original element and
replace it with an electret element (which needs bias just like the MH2
microphone).

Our servers are our property and under our control. The cloud is under
who-knows-whose control who-knows-where. We made a conscious decision
that we will not put our sensitive client or company data - some
classified - on such a system.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: 2m beam orientation

2013-06-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Phil,

IMHO, that is a wise decision. While "the cloud" is supposed to be
secure, I have my doubts. The only thing I would consider committing to
the cloud would possibly be encrypted off-site backup data, but for now,
my RAID file server serves that purpose quite nicely, although it does
not offer me off-site backup storage in case of a major disaster. I can
write my backup data periodically to DVDs and keep them at a different
location should I deem that necessary. I do not have anything that is
classified, so am most concerned about data recovery in case a disaster
totally destroys the drives on my file server.
