Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Rocky 3.7

2013-06-25 Thread Mark Petiford
Re:  ...KX3 I/Q bandwidth is limited to something like 48kHz...

It is actually 192 kHz wide per the Owner's Manual, Page 26:
Set the correct sampling rate...192kHz sampling will yield a display of about
+/- 96 kHz.

My Sony VAIO VPCF121GX laptop has a very quiet 192 kHz internal soundcard, and
it displays +/- 96 kHz hooked directly to the KX3.  That is not to say that all
that bandwidth is required, or even really needed.  Most of the time I have it
scaled down considerably.  A 192 kHz soundcard will certainly cost more, so you
may want to consider a 48 kHz card.  They are the easiest to find, and won't
break the bank.

I have a Griffin iMic (48 kHz), but I usually use it for fldigi's display, and
keep Rocky running using the internal soundcard at the bottom of the screen as
the bandscope.  I just tried using the iMic with Rocky, and it works hooked
directly to the KX3.  Looks great on 2.5, 5, and 20 mhz WWV, but not as good on
10 and 15mhz. I just tried turning the preamp on, and it really helped on 10
and 15 mHz.  I think I paid about $35 for this and it looks great!  I really
need to work with it at a time other than the middle of the night.  It is after
1am right now and I am not thinking to well.

It is unfortunate that Rocky cannot read the KX3's frequency.  It has one of
the most useful frequency domain displays that I have seen.  I said useful, not
pretty.  You can really see the signal, its bandwidth, and sidebands (key
clicks on CW) on Rocky better than any other program I have tried.  NaP3 is my
second choice since its frequency domain display is almost as good, it is
pretty, and reads the KX3 frequency, but I cannot get it to display properly on
this wide screen laptop.  It overwrites itself.

Way past my bedtime.

Ken,

Since the KX3 I/Q bandwidth is limited to something like 48kHz, you do
not need an exotic soundcard which will give you a 192 kHz span, most
external soundcards will do the job just fine.

[Elecraft] K2/10 For Sale

2013-06-25 Thread Mark Adams
Hi Gang,

I am selling my nearly fully loaded K2/10 (SN: 543). The radio is in very good
condition and works great. It has a few very minor scuffs owing to many years
of service as a FD radio. This radio was built by WW7Y in 1999 and I am the
second owner. I built the accessory modules. All upgrades AB are done and
the latest FW is installed. W3FPR performed some repairs, mods and aligned the
rig in November 2010 along with fixing an open capacitor near the AUX RF header
in March 2013. I'm selling to fund my VHF rover upgrades.

Pictures are posted here: http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?393565-K2-10

K2/10 Transceiver (SN:543) with the following Elecraft options installed:
KSB2
K160
K60XV
KNB2
KAT2
KIO2 with an interface cable
KAF2
KBT2 minus the battery

Also included is a custom machined VFO knob by N8BX.

Asking $725 which includes shipping and insurance via USPS Priority Mail.
Paypal is preferred. USPS MO is OK too.

Re: [Elecraft] RS-232 over WiFi

2013-06-25 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
well, this is a good question, if you are planning to use a pair of this
devices one as master and one as a slave with some external omni atennas that
you might get maybe 80m or so but only in LINE OF SHIGHT!!!, in normal shack
conditions with wires and shields I would say maybe 10m or so. Also important
the level of interference in ISM band, the modulation for BT devices is GFSK,
DQPSK and DPSK, the good part is the BT protocol is designed to avoid 802.11
b/g/n/ac and can go up to 2485Mhz and at least for NA the upper freq is ch 11-
2462  as central freq so at 30dBc you'll get 2473, so there is some free
sectrum room to avoid house interference from wifi equipement (in EU I think
can go up to ch 14). The BT  BW is 3Mhz as far as I remember plus the protocol
is close to FHSS one. However the biggest BT killer are the 2.4Ghz wireless
phones, try to avoid this at home (I witched with DECT ones). Having a free of
interference spectrum will
extend the coverage coz the RSSI on wifi devices is not an absolute value
(is a long story with wifi/BT rx calibration) and is enterily based on SNR, if
there is an interference the BT device will report a lower RSSI and will
decrease the modulation scheme. In my HF shack I had no problems with HF
interference (no wonder the spectrum is faar away) consider mounting this
gizmos with external antenna in a pair config and do not relay on internal
computer BT cardmy two cents

Do you know what would be the range using a Lenovo notebook (the adaptor
should be OK for 100m according to the spec., but I don't know about the
 notebook)?

Works great for what? That's an Ethernet to Wi-Fi adapter. What's needed is
 an RS232 to WiFi adapter.

[Elecraft] K3 Bootup sequence?

2013-06-25 Thread F5vjc
When booting up my PC connected to the K3 it keys the TX several times
during the bootup sequence, I imagine when initialising the various
comports. I need to power up the K3 first before PC boot as I have added LP
Bridge to my PC auto start program list and it wants to see the K3 to
enable the connect port.

Is there a way to auto inhibit TX keying during PC bootup ( eg. placing the
TX into TEST mode)?

I believe there must be a way but can't find it as yet.

Thanks, 73 F5VJC

2013-06-25 Thread Don Wilhelm
If you are using DTR and/or RTS for PTT or keying, that will happen as
the OS tests the serial ports.

If you do not need that keying, turn it off in the K3 menu.
If you do need it, I would suggest putting a DB-9 A/B switch in the
serial line. Turn it to break the connection to the K3 during the PC
bootup cycle.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Bootup sequence?

2013-06-25 Thread Matt Zilmer
I've been using TX TEST for this purpose. Your K3 is probably set up
to use DTR or RTS for keying. When the USB enumerator starts up, the
first thing it does is reset all the hubs and endpoints, and this
causes the serial adapter's DTR/RTS to become asserted, keying the K3.
USB may be reset several times, resulting in TX cycles to match.

The only other way of preventing this (that I know of) is to unplug
the serial line at the adapter.

This shouln't happen on a regular COM port, one that's integrated into
the computer. I believe it will *always* happen if there's a
USB/serial adapter in line.

2013-06-25 Thread Cady, Fred
The other thing you can do is to go into the CW WGHT menu, tap the 4 key and
select VOX AUTOOFF. This turns VOX off when you turn the radio off and so the
PC won't key the radio while it (the PC) is booting up. You have to push VOX to
turn it back on, which is a bit of a pain, but I put a message in the banner
message telling me to do this. This only works if you turn the K3 off and then
back on before booting up the PC.

This happens for me whenever I open WriteLog. I just switch my external

I don't like to use Test Mode because I forget to go back to live mode. I
never forget to switch back to the antenna because I don't hear any stations

It happens on my computer, with a real COM port. I used DTR keying and allowed the N1MM

I am happy I did -- the CW is cleaner, and I don't have to worry about accidentally keying
the transmitter on boot-up.

Thanks to all who responded. Fred has the answer for me, select VOX AUTOOFF
(I actually thought I had this mode selected but apparently not) Anyway
this works great, thanks Fred.
If you forget VOX is in AUTOOFF the first CW key press gives a reminder in
VFO B, VFO=OFF, but not subsequent key presses only the first. This is is
fine for me.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Bootup sequence?

2013-06-25 Thread Gary Bartlett
The selection to which Fred refers was added by Wayne to the K3 menu at my
request on the grounds that, as originally designed, the K3 could start
transmitting at full power to the surprise of someone who innocently turned
a computer ON while it was attached to a K3 and that, to me, was a safety
issue. My suggestion was based on my first use of K3 #95 at a Field Day
where that exact situation occurred. Fortunately no test equipment was
fried nor did the radio transmit into an un-terminated RF output or cause
difficulties to the folks who were connecting the antenna at that point in
time. Maybe it's my aerospace background but to me, a transmitter should
not transmit unless one specifically and consciously and knowledgeably
commands it to transmit by making some sort of enabling selection on the
transmitter :)

I always smile a little when I hear the distinct sequence of K3 keying tones
while tuning around on HF. Another K3 is on the air!

Appologize for SNR with this side wireless protocols, very much away from our
primary subject, the problems withn BT devices and IPhones is quite well known
and is not caused by interference but by bugs in protocol implementation on
both ends, (IPh and 2014 Jeep BT device). If you'll sniff the air with a BT
sniffer you can easy see what is the rootcause. Speaking abt Apple and wifi/bt
bugs, in the last 2-3 years a huge number of cross-compatibility problems
occured in the market, some fixed some never addressed, the latest one (few
days ago) is with wifi on new macbook air, try to keep updated both devices
with latest fw or use another handset (I assume you'll not willing to change
your car, is cheaper to change the handset loool). This is consumer market, is
waay different as business model than Elecraft business model, in a year or so
any consumer device will be obsolate anyway so nobody cares too much abt
bugfixing.

Roger, I considered an Omni VII or the K3. The K3 won out for me because it
was so modular that I could add to it as I grew my interests. I don't find
the menu system a problem because I rarely go that deep into it.

If you're not computer friendly, the K3 may not be your cup of tea.

Over all, I hear stuff I couldn't hear before and its flexibility is
amazing. As a friend said, you can change everything but the size of the
box. I've had it about six months and I'm still learning things about the
radio. Elecraft Tech support is the best I have seen in the field.

Roger,

I went through the same decision process as you a few years ago. I had a
Ten-Tec at the time. I bought my K3 kit sight unseen.

As for the radio, I can't imagine anything better that my ears would notice.
(I use a CM500 headset/boom mike.) I bought the 8-pole filters to give it
the steepest skirts. I bought a few extras, but I did not stuff it full. I
find the K3 QSK is excellent if you are wondering. Pretty much, everything
about CW is user tailored. The CWT feature is great.

I find operating conveniences are excellent. The chassis size has been fine
for me.

As for the menu question, it gives me no trouble, and using a menu is seldom
needed. IMHO, the menu system is easy to use, and affords versatility to the
radio.

Your decision should include the future possibility of adding a P3 pan
adapter. It adds flexibility and control to operating. Even if you only
ragchew, it will show interference on the band and is a valuable aid for
trouble shooting.

All things are relative. I recommend you consider your vision if your plans
are to build a kit.

I own both Elecraft and Ten Tec; K-1 and Omni 6 among others. The choice I
am working on now is that of
either the K-3 or the Eagle. The K-3 with one filter for CW will be more
expensive than the Eagle with one filter (not by much)
and of course the Eagle is not a kit. I operate mostly CW for rag chew,
occasional contest, and DX. I do not
think that I need all the options shown on the Elecraft website order
form.
I have never seen a K-3 up close,

concern not really an issue (?) or is it ; do I need anything else in the
way of options (I have a good ATU) (?); and does
the physical size of the control face pose a problem in your opinion.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Bootup sequence?

2013-06-25 Thread Edward R Cole
One other way to prevent the K3 from transmitting (it will still key
but with no RF output). Apply 5v to pin-7 of the ACC after
placing TX INH set to HI in the CONFIG menu. Remove the 5v and the
radio will function normally.

http://www.kl7uw.com/TX-INHIBIT.htm
shows how to use inhibit on VHF bands but not on HF. A simple
modification could be done where the relay is replaced by a toggle
switch and eliminate the transistor and BAND and DIGOUT
circuitry. The voltage regulator, 1K resistor, and diode are not
needed and can be replaced with a 2.2K to 10K resistor (K3 manual,
page 19) connected to 12v thru a toggle switch.

I just boot my computer before powering up the K3 (I am not using the
LP Bridge).

The Creative X-Fi soundcard is available at a modest price, and will do a 192
kHz span should you need it, but there may be other less costly options that
I am not aware of. The X-Fi can be modified with a couple of added
capacitors to reduce the noise level - Google for the mod information.

The biggest consideration for use with the KX3 RX I/Q output is the noise
level rather than the bandwidth of the soundcard.

What you are seeing is normal of only one channel is fed to the soundcard.

In other words, check your cables. Plug in the left channel only into the
soundcard and see if you have a signal present, then do the same with the
 right channel.

It may be a cabling problem, or your sound adapter may have only mono
input. Many external soundcards have mono input when the mic input is
selected, but may (or may not) when the Line In is selected - I/Q decoding
requires stereo soundcard input - if the input is mono, you will see
 exactly the condition you report.

[Elecraft] Thought about the kx3 cables

2013-06-25 Thread Richard Neese
I bought the kx3 cable kit and was hooking it only to find out I did it
wrong because of the color coding.

I think its time to change the color coding on the pc ends. the right
angle ends are fine.

but the pc ends lead you down a wrong path as you connect the speaker
out to the mic in on the pc .

so it should be green on the radio end and red on the pc end and marked
as min in.

same goes for the speaker out to mic in on the radio. I think this would
stop people from connecting them wrong ...

Chris,

There is no sense even trying the SignaLink for that purpose. You need
a stereo soundcard, the SignaLink is mono (at least on the outside of

See posts from yesterday for information about soundcards for that use..

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator

2013-06-25 Thread picmaster
Hi Phil,

I've seen similar approaches for regulating the heater voltage a vintage
Russian military tube receiver. There's a series resistor in the circuit that's
connected when the batteries are fresh-charged, and this resistor is bypassed
with a switch when the battery voltage falls inside the normal operating range
of the tube heater (there's an embedded volt-meter in the tube received for
visual check, just like there's such menu in the KX3).

This method is less power efficient than when using a modern SMPS, but it's
very low-tech and reliable (simpler systems have less and usually more
obvious failure modes).

Nikolay // LZ1NRD

- Цитат от Phil Debbie Salas (dpsa...@tx.rr.com), на 13.05.2013 в 14:45
-

I put two 1N5400 diodes in series with each other (these are 3-amp diodes).
The diodes are physically side-by-side, with the leads connected in series to
keep the assembly small. This all fits nicely between two PowerPole
connectors and has a piece of heat-shrink over it. When connected between my
4S2P LiPo battery (16.8VDC fully charged), I get 14.8VDC on receive, and
14.2V with 2.2 amps on transmit at 10 watts. When the receive voltage drops
to 13V (as monitored on the KX3), I unplug the diode assembly.

Maybe it is not elegant. But it is cheap, works great, and doesn’t generate
 any hash.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Bootup sequence?

2013-06-25 Thread Vic K2VCO
If you do this, make sure that when you remove the 5v pin 7 is either grounded directly or
via a resistor. if you let it float, it may inhibit output in that condition.

Yes, I see that Ed didn't do that in his schematic -- maybe it's rig-dependent, but I've
had this problem.

On 6/25/2013 10:46 AM, Edward R Cole wrote:
One other way to prevent the K3 from transmitting (it will still key but with no RF
output). Apply 5v to pin-7 of the ACC after placing TX INH set to HI in the CONFIG
menu. Remove the 5v and the radio will function normally.

http://www.kl7uw.com/TX-INHIBIT.htm
shows how to use inhibit on VHF bands but not on HF. A simple modification could be
done where the relay is replaced by a toggle switch and eliminate the transistor and
BAND and DIGOUT circuitry. The voltage regulator, 1K resistor, and diode are not needed
and can be replaced with a 2.2K to 10K resistor (K3 manual, page 19) connected to 12v
thru a toggle switch.

I just boot my computer before powering up the K3 (I am not using the LP
Bridge).

Re: [Elecraft] USB sound card for KX3 I/Q

2013-06-25 Thread Mike WA8BXN
A sound card for digital modes is mono and and bandwidth 10 Khz or so. For
I-Q data processing for spectrum display, stereo is required and much
greater bandwidth. Signal link USB is not usable for I-Q data. About
anything will work for digital modes.

[Elecraft] Elecraft and Ten Tec

2013-06-25 Thread Rip R
Thank you very much to all those hams who replied to by post
regarding a buying decision for either the Elecraft K3 or the Ten Tec
Eagle. There are too many to list by call, especially so to the off-
emails on this subject; every email had a wealth of good ideas and
recommendations. I also posted the same question to the Ten Tec
list and those hams responded in kind. I pulled the trigger this
evening by calling Elecraft and after a brief conversation with Dave
and Anna, I ordered a K3. Thanks again and 73s Roger Rippy

Re: [Elecraft] What is status on tuning noise on KX3?

2013-06-25 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Paul,

As we speak, we're testing an experimental hardware fix that appears to be very
effective, eliminating the need for RX NR and/or RX SHFT in most cases. If
you'd like to try this change, please email customer support and we'll send you
the instructions. It involves a minor modification to the KXFL3 module.

Thanks,

I googled KX3 Tuning Noise and saw a few reports in late 2012. There was a
comment in very early release notes that it would be fixed. I just updated
the firmware to 1.50 and it is still there.

There were some work-arounds suggested in late 2012, but not without cost -
that is, invoking the workaround disable some other features (dual watch).

Did I miss a step or is there a fix that doesn't result in disabling other
 features?

Re: [Elecraft] Thought about the kx3 cables

2013-06-25 Thread Don Wilhelm
I don't see the problem - the colors are consistent with the typical
computer soundcard jack coloring.
The Green connects between the KX3 Mic input to the PC Line out (or
speaker) jack which is typically colored green.
The Red connects between the KX3 Phones jack to the PC MIC (or line in)
jack which is typically red (or pink) - OK, the Line In is blue, but you
cannot satisfy all conditions, blue is not used on the cable set.

Can you explain why you think the coloring should be changed - the KX3
has no color on the jacks.

I think its time to change the color coding on the pc ends. the right
angle ends are fine.

but the pc ends lead you down a wrong path as you connect the speaker
out to the mic in on the pc .

so it should be green on the radio end and red on the pc end and
marked as min in.

same goes for the speaker out to mic in on the radio. I think this
would stop people from connecting them wrong ...

[Elecraft] K3 SDR/IQ

2013-06-25 Thread KD7YZ Bob
Howdy K3' people:

I have an SDR/IQ. I also have three Elecraft transverters. When I
connect a BNC to the BNC-RX T chain, and I tune Spectravue to 28.07
and the 6m xv50 transverter is on, I am looking at the area around
50.070 .. I can look for beacons and Sporadic-E openings.

Nothing new.

However, the other day, I suspected the xv50 transverter to on the
Fritz. So I switched to the internal 6m Rx/Tx section. Made some
contacts.

So now I want to once again look for 6m Beacons down below 50.080 .
My only option seems to be the IF BNC output.

I connected there and tried to set Spectravue for 8.215; 10.0; 28.0 and
still see nothing from 6m. I even tried to set it at 50.10, to no avail.

So how do yu set it up to watch lower end of 6m on the K3, without
using a transverter?

thanks

So how do yu set it up to watch lower end of 6m on the K3, without
 using a transverter?

Connect SDR-IQ to the IF Out jack (not the RX Ant) and tune SpectraVue
to 8.125 MHz manually *or* in SV's ExtRadio Setup Select the K3 and
uncheck HF Tracking Mode.

Note: If you want to use the frequency tracking tied to the IF, you
will need some kind of serial splitter to share the K3 serial port.
For more information see the SpectraVue Help file section 4.2, page
59 and page 58 IF Tracking.

Re: [Elecraft] On the horns of a dilemma - upgrade K3 to 100w or buy KXPA100+ATU?

2013-06-25 Thread Jim Lowman

Thanks, guys, for all of the helpful suggestions to my dilemma!

I have decided to upgrade the K3 to 100w for the time being.
As one person pointed out, that will make it more interesting to a
prospective buyer, when that time comes.

If, in the future, I see that I'd like to have 100w for one or more of
the other QRP radios, I'm sure that the KXPA100+ATU will be readily
available from stock.

This evening I added a gator clip equipped chunk of line to the KX, and had it
grab hold of the downspout on the gutter, and about 50 feet of line spread over
the ground

End result: could get a 1.1:1 match on 40 and 20.. 10, 1.5:1... 160 wouldn't
tume effectivly.   Then again, it is about 100 feet to 120 feet of gutter,
which is a tad off for 160 meters

The results: tried to get into a SSB conversation, but was apparently drowed
out by the guys running 1kw... but who cares.. I'll make a contact one of these
days...
