[Elecraft] Field Day Guide to K3 and P3 by K2QY--RECAP
I gave my presentation on the Friday prior to Field Day. I had a couple of questions on clarifications and afterwards several hams came up to me and thanked me because they felt it was a big help. I especially focused on the TAP/HOLD differences and the fact that most functions are clearly marked. I noted that ergonomically the layout of the K3 has similar functions in the same general area on the panel. So the result on Field Day this year was that the several operators who used my K3 felt much more comfortable with it. I did need to answer a couple of queries on the fly but over all most of the ops enjoyed using my K3 and P3. One of the most timid of last years ops told me she really felt that the K3 was pretty easy to use now that she understood the TAP/HOLD functions. In fact she would consider an Elecraft product next time she was in the market. Most of the ops really loved the P3 and it's ability to easily hunt and pounce. I showed a couple of hams how easy it was to be running on a frequency and hunt and pounce using the 2nd receiver on the same band. That totally amazed a couple of people. As a bonus, our club has 2 Kenwood 930s, one of which is having issues. So next year, we will probably be using not only my K3, but my KX3 with the 100W amp for a second station. Retiring one of the 930s (thankfully) since they have no filtering. As with several FD operations we can run CW and SSB on any band at the same time. The K3 output is very clean, not causing any RFI issues (as expected). The 930s do not cause RFI in the K3, even though they have issues with each other on some bands. -- John Fritze Jr K2QY AARA president 2013 ACACES secretary 2013 Albany County RACES Radio Officer ARES ENY DEC Northern District Hudson Div. [Elecraft] K2 Why MH2 mic seems dead
I've been reading posts about the MH2 mic and have had my own struggles with it. Is it common knowledge that the mic pickup element is only effective when talking into the top scree on the mic? If I talk into the front screen with SSBA at 1, it doesn't pick up a think. When I set SSBA to 2 or 3 is does pick up audio but I think that's because it is so sensitive it is also picking it up from the top. When I opened the mic, I saw the mic element in foam, in a compartment below the top screen and practically isolated from the screen if front of the mic. In fact, that front screen looked like it was just a plastic facade. Is that how mics are suppose to be made? My only guess is, by putting the capture area on top, it avoids speaking directly into the mic if you are expecting it to pick up via the front screen. I have that 600 ohm dynamic Kenwood mic that is often used with the SGC-2020 (up/down buttons on top). I thought about replacing the MH2 with it - mainly because its slimmer profile would allow it to fit in the Pelican case with the K2. Can someone tell me it that Kenwood would be a direct replacement or would I have to rewire something. It doesn't have a model number on it but I think it is MC-43s. What about audio quality - the K2 is only the QRP-ish model. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Why MH2 mic seems dead
Paul, You apparently did not get my private email to you. You are talking about the older MH2 microphone made by Heil - if it has the Heil name on the front and the Elecraft MH2 label on the back, it is one of those. The current (for many years now) Elecraft MH2 microphones are different, and have the Elecraft name on the front. Yes, that microphone can be messed up inside - Heil used another microphone and modified it - on mine, the original dynamic element was clipped out, turned around and inserted into the hole for it. There is another front facing hole more toward the top where it electret element is supposed to be located - it should face the front, not the top. That element is secured with just a bit of foam, so I can understand how yours may have tilted out of place. Heil no longer supplies the MH2 microphone to Elecraft and you can probably guess why. There are only a few hundred MH2 microphones that were built by Heil, and more like thousands that were built to Elecraft specifications. So turn your electret element so it faces the front and it should be OK. To reassemble it, dress the wires properly in the slots and squeeze the tabs on the PTT button so you can move it outward into a parking position while you put the back on (if you do not do that, the PTT button will bind). Your K2 has the Rework Eliminators Internal Microphone Adapter installed, so changing microphone types is as easy as removing the left side panel and change the plugs. Refer to the IMA manual from Rework Eliminators (or unpcbs) - That in not an Elecrraft add-on. The Elecraft microphones require bias (the 5.6k resistor in the IMA), but dynamic microphones do not. Again refer to the IMA plugging instructions from http://www.unpcbs.com/adaptor/adaptor_pdfs/ima_ug.pdf 73, Don W3FPR On 6/28/2013 3:22 PM, k7nhb wrote: I've been reading posts about the MH2 mic and have had my own struggles with it. [Elecraft] KRC2 issues
Someone else once called the KRC2 his least favorite piece of Elecraft equipment. I would like to concur with that assessment. I have one of these, purchased used some years ago. At that time I was attempting to use it with my TS-870 and despite some handholding and a special hex file sent to me by Elecraft, I was never satisfied with it and gave up. Since I apparently have too much time on my hands and/or am a glutton for punishment, I decided to give it another try with my K3. I know that the preferred method of interfacing to the K3 is via the aux bus, but I want to use it via the serial port and not have yet another cable dangling off the back. Mine has the ACC mod (although I never added the speaker) KRC2ACC v1.5 PIC. The first problem is that there are various versions of software on the Elecraft website. There are old versions that read hex files and a newer beta version (KRC Downloader 2.1.7) that is (I think) standalone. The problem with this one is that the screenshot of what it should look like bears only passing resemblance to what the program interface actually looks like. Furthermore, from what I've seen, the ACC needs different firmware, but this new downloader has no option to select a file. As it stands, the new program reports v1.6 when querying the KRC2 and when sending a bandmap declares that it was done successfully. The F1 and F2 buttons will cycle through the bands and source the various outputs successfully, however, switching bands on the K3 does nothing. I've used a scope to look at the XCVR in connector and the RxD signal is toggling okay and getting through the MAX1406 to the Rx pin of the PIC. From there, nothing appears to happen. All jumpers are installed per the tables. So, what is the correct firmware? How about Elecraft trashing any obsolete firmware on the web page and making it clearer how this thing should be programmed. Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 issues
Wes, I just checked the Elecraft website, and see only 3 files for the KRC2 - KRC2 Download Program, KRC2 Firmware V1.6 and KRC2ACC Firmware V1.6. No older levels and no beta. The F buttons behave differently in the KRC2ACC firmware, so if you want band selection via those buttons as indicated in the KRC2 manual (not the KRC2ACC manual) you should load the KRC2 Firmware. What baud rate is your K3 set to. The maximum rate for the KRC2 is 19200, and the K3 must be set accordingly. The KRC2 behaves better as a band decoder if you connect it to the AUXBUS on the ACC connector and frees your K3 RS-232 to be used at the 38400 rate. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/28/2013 5:18 PM, Wes Stewart wrote: Someone else once called the KRC2 his least favorite piece of Elecraft equipment. Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 issues
Wes, That is the KRC2 Configuration Utility which is quite different than the firmware. It is used to alter the band output selections if you wish to. Even though it is beta, it is the ONLY version, and it works - and works quite well. The developer will respond if you have any issues with that beta. I could not discover any non-current firmware or software for the KRC2 that you seem to believe is still there - it just does not show up in my browser. The KRC2 will work on the RS-232 bus, but you must limit the data rate of the K3 to 19200 if the KRC2 is sitting on the RS-232 bus. Actually, the KRC2 does more than just sit on the RS-232 line, it actually relays data on that bus. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/28/2013 6:16 PM, Wes Stewart wrote: Don, That's one of the problems I'm exposing. [Elecraft] Win4k3Suite version 1.01 is now available
Hi Version 1.01 of the suite is now available. This version fixes some of the early issues reported last week. In addition, it offers HRD support for version 5 and 6. Please see the release notes. I would appreciate reports of anyone using it with third part products like the Steppir. Thanks, Tom VA2FSQ. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Why MH2 mic seems dead
Electret Condenser mic elements are typically very sensitive to their mounting location. A small movement the element can make a huge difference in the sound. You may get better performance if you move the element to the front of the foam directly to the rear of the mic screen... 73 Gene K1NR On Fri, 28 Jun 2013 12:22:24 -0700 (PDT) k7nhb desig...@quickdata.com wrote: I've been reading posts about the MH2 mic and have had my own struggles with it. Re: [Elecraft] Field Day Guide to K3 and P3 by K2QY--RECAP
I also created a 5 page printed guide and leaving at the station thinking it would be read. That was dumb, as I still had to answer many questions that were all answered in the guide. Finally I just answered those by just putting the guide in front of them and saying Page 3 or Page 4. or whatever page it was on. My mistake and it seems you did it correct is I will need to do a presentation next year. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Field Day Guide to K3 and P3 by K2QY--RECAP
As a professional technical writer off and on since the early 1960's I can say that the ONLY time my audience willingly devoured the written manuals before diving in were the manuals I wrote for defusing live ordinance (bombs) during the Vietnam war. I write some of Elecraft's manuals, and customer support is forever noting that a customer called about this (covered on page 4) and that (on pages 9 and 11) and the other thing (page 15). 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I also created a 5 page printed guide and leaving at the station thinking it would be read. Re: [Elecraft] Field Day Guide to K3 and P3 by K2QY--RECAP
David, 5 pages is too long. If it cannot be covered in half a page, it will not be read, and even that half page may not be read. I made a 1 page note on K2 operation for Field Day and even then an experienced digital operator put the K2 in Digital mode using USB instead of RTTY mode and had trouble because USB mode had compression turned on. Once we switched to RTTY mode, the transmit distortion was gone and digital contacts were possible. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/28/2013 10:02 PM, david Moes wrote: I also created a 5 page printed guide and leaving at the station thinking it would be read.
