Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Power Socket

2014-02-18 Thread Dominic Baines

Thanks Dave,

Pretty sure it is the barrel connector on the board due to being removed
over and over not a dry joint but will inspect. The end of the socket
connector has the look of a scorch mark which seems a bit ott for the
sort of power the KX3 draws. I am informed that later KX3's (borrowed a
locals who bought his recently) are now glued down as well.

The power lead/barrel connector on the second #2334 KX3 is starting to
intermittently drop out. Most notable if you remove the internal
batteries and try and operate from a supply only. It seems it is the
socket itself that is duff. Yes using the Elecraft power leads not
something homebrewed.

I am thinking it might be worth removing the socket, fitting a couple of
power poles on a pig tail, and a grommet where the original socket was.

Anyone else done anything similar?

A second wash with iso propyl alcohol and the KX3 I thought wind blown
sand had killed (#1082) seems fine now... there was a lot of dirt/dust
that had not previously been removed.

[Elecraft] KX3 for sale - $1,275 shipped US

2014-02-18 Thread TJ Campie
I'm regrettably selling my one prized possession, KX3 #288. My KX3 was one
of the first kits shipped during the production. The radio was built with
all the available options: ATU, Battery Charger, Roofing filter, keyer
paddle, and microphone. The 2m module is not yet available but it can be
added to this radio when it is if you desire.

The build of this actual radio was documented live on Ustream.com and that
video is archived here (3 hours):

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/23127348

Some things to note about the pedigree of this particular radio: the fit
and finish of the case has changed through the production of the radios and
the early ones had less clearance around the speaker which can cause some
vibrations at higher volumes. On my radio, I used a couple pieces of
electrical tape to dampen that which worked fine but the radio will come
with that tape intact, do not be surprised.

Current radios also ship with a different VFO which offers a "free
spinning" VFO whereas this radio has a much stiffer feel, which is great
for portable ops. The current VFO is available from Elecraft for a small
fee. Also, an additional filtering component was added to the BNC connector
on recent radios which gave better performance on the VLF bands, and this
radio does not have that either. Again, this can be purchased from Elecraft
as well.

As is, the radio has the same amazing performance as the current production
radios. This radio has seen SOTA summits, park benches, cars, and all kinds
of exciting operating locations. Still, it shows very little wear. There's
a tiny ding on the display protector but its only noticeable in the right
light. Other than that I don't know of any other defects. Operating
performance is 10/10.

I did have a bit of a mishap while mobile once and the mic cable got a bit
melted in 2 places, but the insulation is intact and it does not affect the
operation of the mic.

The radio comes as pictured below including the following accessories:

   - Hand Mic
   - Keyer paddle (with original hardware and upgraded hardware as provided
by Elecraft) with a nice little zip up case
   - 2x power cables with powerpole connectors (only one pictured)
   - 2x 1.5mm - 3.5mm stereo cables (I used one for the IQ output and the
other as a keyline for a custom 100w amplifier which I will be selling
   separately)
   - Construction manual
   - Operating manual
   - Manual errata and bulletins, original battery retainer removed when
   the charger was installed
   - USB communications cable
   - Original box
   - BNC cover (not original equipment)
   - Lowepro Edit-150 backpack which fits the KX3 and accessories like it
was made for it. The bag is $50 new. Here's a video of how the KX3 fits
   in there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6elMOwmShto

I don't know what else to say. The radio has treated me so well, it is a
real shame to see it go, but my operating habits are changing and the
ergonomics of this radio just don't fit my operating style anymore. I'm
certain it will provide tons of great contacts and experiences to its next
owner.

*I am asking $1275, including shipping and paypal fees. $55 for the stand
(see below). If you wish to pay by postal money order, the price is reduced

[Elecraft] Please test KPA500 rev. 1.38 if you get a chance

2014-02-18 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi all,

We updated the KPA500 beta firmware to revision 1.38 yesterday (from 1.37). The
change was minor, pertaining to initial conditions when the KPA500 is used at
remote locations.

If you get a chance, please load rev. 1.38 and verify that it is working well
for all normal operation. Once we see a few more positive reports, we'll be
going to production status on the K3, KPA500, and KAT500 beta firmware releases.

If you haven't already loaded K3 rev 4.83 and KAT500 rev 1.58, I'd encourage
you to do these updates as well. The difference between the new firmware and
previous production releases is pretty dramatic, as reported by beta testers
over the past several days.

Wayne

you can use to try the app lets you "tune around the band".

[Elecraft] PayPal fees

2014-02-18 Thread Bill Turner

Note to everyone: If you tell PayPal it is for "Friends and Family" and
you transfer direct from a bank account, i.e. not a credit card, there
are no fees if the transfer is within the USA. The fees apply only to
businesses and/or credit card transfers and/or international transfers.

PayPal does not advertise this much for obvious reasons, but it is there
in their policy statement and I use it all the time. It really is free.

Re: [Elecraft] PayPal fees

2014-02-18 Thread Scott Manthe
There is one problem with using this payment method: Paypal will offer
absolutely no buyer protection if you pay this way. So if you know the
seller is trustworthy, then this is fine, albeit a little dishonest.
But, if you get screwed trying to screw Paypal, don't expect them help
you get your money back.

[Elecraft] KPA 500 issue

2014-02-18 Thread John Veach
Got up early this morning and noticed a soft yellow glow from the shack.  I
never leave anything on so upon closer inspection, I found my KPA 500 display
was on and the message said MCU Load.  The power switch on the front of the amp
doesn't work, the menu button doesn't work and the only way to turn off the amp
is with the rear rocker switch.  Nothing works except that switch.  I have an
email into Elecraft and one of the engineers is going to check into this issue
for me.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this occur.  I haven't had the amp on for
a couple of weeks.  I'm perplexed!  Quick response from Elecraft by the way
letting me know they are checking into this issue.  Sounds like software
problems to me but what do I know, I'm retired!

[Elecraft] K3 intermittently "forgets" last used mode when returning to a band

2014-02-18 Thread jkhooper
Dear fellow Elecraft fans,

When I change bands on my K3 with the front BAND button, my K3 sometimes
“forgets” the last used mode on a band that I might return to. For example,
when switching to 40 m from a higher band, I sometimes look over at my K3
display and see “USB” mode selected for 40 m rather than “LSB”. When going
from 40 m to 20 m, I sometimes see “LSB” selected for 20 m rather than “USB”.

I have my K3 connected to my Mac and run a logging program which can control
the K3, but I have experienced this behavior even when the logging program was
not running.

Happens so seldom that it doesn’t bother me at all … though if I am not hearing
anyone clearly I look over to see which mode is showing on the display.

Any hypotheses on what might be happening?

[Elecraft] KPA 500 issue

2014-02-18 Thread John Veach
So, I got responses from Greg here on the reflector but also from Gary, Dick
and Wayne at Elecraft.  A simple download fixed the problem. I couldn't get the
amp to turn on so the KPA utility wouldn't connect to it from my puter but when
I told the utility to reload the software, it did it anyway.  Suprised me but
then these guys are great. Where else would one get three responses from the
manufacturer within a couple of hours of sending a trouble report.  Not KYI for
sure!  Thanks guys.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] PayPal fees

2014-02-18 Thread Ray Sills

Hi Bill:

Yes, not "heavily advertised" but it is there. Also works from a
"funded" account (where you have a balance in PayPal).

There is a similar service called Dwolla, which lets you make payments
to others. Payments under $10 are free, and payments over that cost
25¢... cheaper than a postage stamp. Oddly, the fee is charged to the
-recipient- not the sender... so when I use it, I just add the 25¢ to
the amount sent.

Also some banks will let you send money to anyone with an email
address... the bank sends a message to the recipient with instructions
as to how to get the funds deposited into their bank account... so the
sender does not need any knowledge of the recipient's bank account.

I'm sure there are other services, too.

PayPal does not advertise this much for obvious reasons, but it is

[Elecraft] K3 Intermittent Transmit Problem

While transmitting CW into an amp (KPA500, Alpha 78, Alpha 9500) and using
Writelog to key the K3 (happens on different computers) every once in a

More power seems to make it happen more often. I assume RF is getting into

Knut,

Yes, that made it through OK. I usually see posts through Nabble that
contain no reference information, and sometimes the subject line is not
relevant.
I was blaming the way Nabble works, but I guess that is not the issue.
Apparently the poster has a choice of leaving a bit of reference or not

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Intermittent Transmit Problem

2014-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

You can find out if it is an RF in the Shack problem or not by
transmitting into a dummy load. If the problem goes away, you can blame
it on the RF.

If RF is a problem, the proper place for ferrites is on the antenna
feedline to choke RF common mode currents on the outside of the coax
shield. Trap that RF before it gets to the shack.

Re: [Elecraft] PayPal fees

2014-02-18 Thread David Gilbert

I'm not sure if W6WRT is referring to me or not since I wasn't the only
one to reply negatively, but Bill is of the opinion that the PayPal
"friends and family" provision applies to any and all private
transactions (such as those between members of this list) and that the
fee only applies to transactions with "businesses". I believe that to
be totally erroneous. PayPal has always been a generalized funds
transfer service between members of a mass market ... it even got its
start handling transactions between totally private individuals on eBay,
for which it definitely expected to collect fees. Trying to avoid those
fees by claiming friends/family status between otherwise total strangers
does not fly ethically.

Certainly I could have expressed my disagreement in a much less
confrontational manner, but my objection to W6WRT's suggestion still stands.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2-100 Test and Alignment Issues

2014-02-18 Thread William Moore
Don,

I am finally able to get back to my KPA-100 construction project and this
email is to complete this thread with the result.

Yes the problem was T4. I removed, rewound and replaced it. You were
correct, I had wound T4 backwards. With the correction I was able to easily
null the bridge to 12 millivolts. R26 and R27 required almost no adjustment
to set the correct values. The rest of the setup and test process went
perfectly.

So, to those who are or will be building the KPA-100, keep in mind that T4
must be wound exactly as illustrated and instructed in the manual.

Thanks again for your help, Don.

Bill,

Regarding T4, there is one other possibility that I did not mention before.
If the direction of the windings is not as shown in the manual, it will work
"backwards" which may be what you are observing.

As for the minimum voltage of 1.4 volts, that is WAY too high. The bridge
should null to less than 14 millivolts with 15 or 20 watts flowing through
it.

You could do a sanity check on it by attempting to null the bridge by
monitoring the DC voltage at U5 pin 3 rather than U5 pin 1. The voltage on
U5 pin 1 should be the same as at pin 3 if U5 is working OK.
If you still have a high voltage at U5 pin 3, then try doing the balance
(nulling) while monitoring U5 pin 5. If you can obtain a null at U5 pin 5,
then for certain T4 is wound in the wrong direction.

Over here, saying a man is hung means something quite different to

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Won't power on

2014-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeremy,

Make a quick check on your voltmeter - measure a new Alkaline battery,
you should see quite close to 1.50 volts.

Are you making the measurement by using TUNE? If not, you should be.

Is this an older K2 with a trimpot at R60? If so, it should be turned
fully counterclockwise.
Check the resistors R59 through R63 to be certain they are the correct
values.

I would be puzzled about a bias voltage higher than 0.64 volts because
it could lead to higher current and the resulting heat dissipation in
the PA transistors.

Thank you for adding a bit of the prior post that you are responding to
- it helps a lot.

I'd like to plead / beg / request that the Linux Elecraft KX3 Utility be ported
to the Raspberry Pi platform. This little computer would be *perfect* for
remote operation with the KX3! Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3IOBUFFKT

2014-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Stan,

I am not certain why you are confused. That mod has been incorporated
into all K3s beginning in September 2009. If you purchased your K3
after that, the mod is already included.

To Elecraft's benefit, upgrade mods like this one are provided at modest
cost for owners of K3s that were purchased prior to the inclusion of a
modification. That way all older K3s can be kept up to date if the
owner desires to add the mods.

Since Stan purchased his K3 after 9/2009, it has the mod. His question
is why was the resistor included with a K3 kit that doesn't need it?

Receiving the resistor would imply that it's needed, hence the
confusion. Perhaps there's a logistical reason for including it.

2014-02-18 Thread JeremyJones
A new AA battery right from the package is giving me 1.615V on the fluke
meter. This is a newer K2 (#7405). I had some issues when building it
which caused me to go through a couple of sets of PA finals before I had to
send it to you to get sorted out. It was working great until now, so
hopefully there isn't something residual that is creeping up now. The
resistor values are all correct according to the manual.
R59 4.7k
R60 100
R61 120
R62 2.7k
R63 220

I am performing the voltage measurement on the Base pad of where Q8 would
go, and pressing and holding the "Tune" button on the front of the radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Won't power on

2014-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeremy,

That voltage is close to what I would expect from a new Lithium battery.
If you are measuring an Alkaline battery, then your voltmeter is a bit
on the high side.

So if Alkaline battery, then your 0.65 measurement is likely OK, but if
that battery is a Lithium type, the bias is a bit high and you may have
to experiment with slightly different values at R60 to bring the bias
voltage down a bit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3IOBUFFKT

2014-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Stan,

OK on that being a part of the P3 shipment.
Yes, Elecraft does that when mods related to an additional piece of gear
might be needed. For instance, the K2 10/12 meter and VFO ALC mod kit
is shipped with every KPA100 kit that is ordered. In this day and age,
most K2s that are adding the KPA100 already have that mod installed. It
is apparently less expensive for Elecraft to add the mod kit than to
expend the time and effort of the CS and office staff to supply the mod
kit only when needed.

Elecraft has always supplied whatever mods and firmware are required if
you order an option (different than an upgrade or a mod kit). That is
most notable with the K2 where firmware does have a price tag. If you
order the K60XV option, it requires firmware 2.04 which will be provided
at no additional cost should your firmware be of an earlier level. In
the example that I quoted, the K2 firmware is not automatically shipped
unless the customer tells sales that his firmware needs to be updated to
accommodate the new option.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] - Digital Modes Interface - Working Split

The reason I ask is that I have lately been using an E-MU 0204 for
sound card modes. I've been thinking about purchasing either a
Navigator or a microHAM Digi Keyer II. This is where I think I may be
wrong in my thinking - the SignaLink USB has only mono receive
capability. When working split, is there any reason why I have to be
able to decode both the DX (or split station [i.e. W1AW/x]) and the
calling station?

While it might be helpful to decode signals on your TX frequency when
working split, you would need another instance of MMTTY (or whatever
decode software you use). I am a serious contester, and active DXer,
mostly CW, but also SSB and RTTY, and while I often listen to my TX
frequency, I've never tried to decode it.

FWIW, I've never seen the virtue in dedicated interfaces like the
Microham stuff, and they sure are complicated to set up. It IS a good
move to use a decent USB audio interface, the EMU is overkill for
digital modes, but a good choice for bandscope display (but a P3 is MUCH
better). The Signalink has its limitations (mono, and Pin One Problems),
but it's bought and paid for, so I'd stick with it and spend your bucks
in Watsonville.

It isn't clear whether you have the P3 yet and only need to add the
SVGA. If you're not a contester but you are a DXer, you'll find the P3
very helpful in figuring out how the DX is working the pileup, but the
SVGA does not help with that. It does add some PSK and RTTY
functionality, but I'd rather get that from the computer.

If you already have a P3, go for the KPA500. You'll need SOME tuner with
it unless your antennas are flat, but it works fine with a manual tuner
that can handle the power. Before the KAT500s were available, I used the
excellent Ten Tec 229 and 238 tuners. They go used for $275 - $325, and
would get you through until you have the bucks for a KAT500.

David;

Garbled how? Does it still send valid CW characters? Are you using a K1EL
Winkeyer? (I ask because WriteLog does not support the internal K3 key

Have you checked the connections between the computer, keyer and K3?

Many contest programs will send data to the WinKeyer, then edit it on the fly
before it goes out. Is it possible that this is happening, and that the data
going into the WinKeyer is getting messed up? I have seen RFI problems at times
in my own Winkeyer.

Lots of questions, and the answers will lead a long ways to resolving the

Re: [Elecraft] PayPal fees

2014-02-18 Thread David Gilbert

OK, I wanted very much to adhere to Eric's post shutting down this
thread, but Bill is simply wrong here and his advice crosses the line
... at least for me if not for others. The official PayPal
friends/family policy extends ONLY to pure transfers of funds between
friends and family ... such as a parent sending money to their offspring
in college. It specifically excludes purchases, whether business or
private. Here's the relevant link (about half way down):

https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/send-money-online

"When you send money to friends or family in the US from your bank
account or balance, it's free for you and the recipient. When you buy a
service or product, we charge the seller our normal low rate of 2.9% +
$.30. We think that’s pretty fair."

There is no way that policy extends to private party ads for goods and
services.

[Elecraft] KXPA100 ATU Issue

2014-02-18 Thread Chris Johnson
My KX3 and KXPA100 has been off for about 1 month due to Life getting in the
way. Today I turned it back on, checked available firmware and updated my KX3
to the current FW and my KXPA100 to the 1.09 beta. When trying to use the amp
ATU.X, nothing happens. The SWR light flashes continuously after the attempt
and the unit makes no ATU sounds. If I turn off the amp via PA-OFF, and try
the internal KX3 tuner, it is working fine. I then reverted the KXPA100 back
to non-beta 1.04 with the same results. The utility connects and can see
status.

If I tune to a band that does not need a tuner, such as 20M on my windom, and
hold XMIT to send a carrier, as long as I am under 10W using the KX3, power is
being output. When I go above 10W, the output is as shown:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozy311/12624894153/

My fault table also looks very odd. No way my power was that high, but that
may be from v1.0 firmware. And my SWR and voltage never dropped that low,
unless it faults that when power is removed and the supply drains.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozy311/12625150863/in/photostream/

I really hope nothing is wrong. I need to use it Thurs-Sunday at our camping
event. :(

Please help!

Power output is 5W, SWR is 1.5:1, and the SWR light on the KXPA100 flashes. I
have to power cycle the amp to get the SWR light to stop flashing. SWR meter
