Re: [Elecraft] OT: ECore LMR400
I have not seen or used this brand, but there are several manufacturers of LMR-400 style cable. I bought some on e-bay a couple years ago (think it was Comscope brand) and it checked at the same loss figures as Time's Microwave LMR-400. I am using it in a non-critical system so consider it a reasonable risk. But for my 1500w eme systems I only use Time's LMR cables or Andrew Heliax, because they have the reputation backing their specs. I run mostly LMR-600 and LDF7-50 1-5/8 inch diameter Heliax. There is some LMR-400 on the antennas to keep weight down (eight 18-foot runs). The LMR-400 only carries one-fourth of the power distributed to four antennas. I have largely stopped buying any RG-8 or RG-213 (but have some in use on HF). The shield coverage on the cheap mfrs of these is pitiful. But you can trust Belden and Amphenol for their stuff. If you run QRO it will make much more importance to buy known quality. If not then it might not. On the other hand if you run QRP you want every dB of signal so going cheap is also not a good idea. If you are outfitting a boat radio, cheap is not; you will be replacing cheap cable way more often. So it remains a personal decision for you. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com Kits made by KL7UW Dubus Mag business: dubus...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 rtty decode vs: computer decode
I have to agree with Barry. For a modest amount of code space (Flash RAM), they added a very useful capability for the casual or field operator. I once worked a DX RTTY station via FSK-D mode with paddle keyboard. I could not have done that QSO any other way at that time. The QSO was made more exciting by being on 40 meters, running 3 watts into an indoor mag loop antenna. :) 73 de Ray K2ULR On Mar 23, 2014, at 8:41 AM, Barry wrote: Wes (N7WS) wrote No comparison. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Boy Scouts looking for first QSO
Mark, Glad the scouts had fun having QSOs. We need more young Hams added to our ranks. If the scouts are not licensed, you have to watch out not to violate FCC rules regarding what is called 3rd party traffic. Occasionally, DX stations may ask you to pass a third-party message to a friend or relative in the States. This is all right as long as the US has signed an official third-party traffic agreement with that particular country, or the third party is a licensed amateur. But it also means that a non-licensed person on this side cannot talk at a Stateside Ham station to Hams in certain countries. The list of countries which the U.S.A. has 3rd party agreements with can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/third-party-operating-agreements 73, Rich - K1HTV = = = Many thanks to all the Elecrafters who answered the boys' calls this morning. They successfully completed their very first QSOs with hams in New York , Massachusetts, Mississippi, Arkansas and Montana. One of the Scouts, Zach, then declared that he wanted to work some DX! (Yes, he really picked up the jargon that quickly...) So I switched the radio to 15 Meters, and Zach began calling CQ DX. Within just a couple of minutes, Zach had worked EI4HDB and an F1 station. He even tried out some of the French he has been learning in school. He was thrilled! I always enjoy watching youngsters experience the magic of shortwave for the first time. Re: [Elecraft] Questions re K3 Remote
Ted, You will find some answers on the data usage on the RemoteRig Forum, for example: http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php?topic=897.msg3611#msg3611 You can tweak the connection to use less bandwidth, e.g. changing your CODEC to one requiring less bandwidth, changing serial speeds down to 9600, etc. Your mileage will vary! Your real problem would be hosting a radio on a 3G or 4G network. These networks do not provide an external IP number, but give you an internal number not visible from outside of your network. This problem, called double NAT, means that you can not reach the radio RRC at all. There are two work-arounds, both of which can be complex or expensive: 1) Pay your provider for a true external IP address. If this is offered, it is usually for a business account and costs much more than a consumer account (depends upon country and provider) 2) Setup a VPN at the radio site There are a number of ways to access the Elecraft and other accessories (rotators, etc.) as well. The P3 can be accessed through some available software, but I suspect this may be an issue if using 3G/4G networks, from both a bandwidth and data usage standpoint. 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 21.03.2014 14:04, Dauer, Edward wrote: A couple of questions for anyone who might know either the answers or where I could find them . . . However, the outback location is really outback - Internet is cell telephone link only so far as I know, and the contracts limit the data usage to 5 GB a month with substantial costs for overuse (there is but one carrier there with a cell tower that I can hit.) The station is a K3-KAT500-KPA500 (and a P3). Two questions: (1) Any way to estimate the data usage per hour of operation before I invest in the remote? (I operate CW only, with heavy usage during contests.) Would the data transmission rate accommodate rapid CW QSOs in pileups etc? (2) Would the K3 have to be operated barefoot, and with only its internal ATU? That is, would info about the KPA-500 and KAT-500 be available somehow, remotely? I would have serious misgivings about trying to operate a 500-watt amp in the line without being able to meter its behavior. Thanks for whatever guidance might be offered . . . Hi Dick, If you have the 15-pin cable that comes with the KPAK3AUX cable set, you can set the K3's CONFIG:PWR SET to PER BND and that will do what you want to do. Have a look at the intro_guide at http://www.ke7x.com/home/k-line-introduction-and-set-up-guide The slow to come up to power might be caused by how you have your ALC set up. If you have the Aux Cable to connect the K3 to KPA500, then in the K3 Config menu, PWR SET PER_BAND. While still in that menu, the 1 key locks/unlocks the Power knob, and it notices whether the KPA500 is in Operate, or not. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Shutdown ideas?
You could use Task Scheduler (if you have a Windows 7 PC) to initiate a batch file that copies the shutdown command out to the correct COM port for your K3. The scheduler list can have one or more entries that will run at Windows shutdown time. It can support many types of trigger events. I use the scheduler to run an NTP time check every 15 minutes, so that JT65 and WSPR have accurage time to work with. [Elecraft] Bluetooth interface for the KX3
Hi all, I thought it might be a fun project to design and build a bluetooth-serial interface that I could use to control my KX3 using my Android tablet. If this sounds interesting to you, you can read about the project here: http://eksfiles.net/2014/03/bluetooth-for-the-kx3/ There's a PC board available for the project from FAR Circuits, and I designed the board so that it would fit nicely into an enclosure that has a 9V battery compartment. Of course, you could build it however you'd like. I designed the interface for the KX3, but it could easily be interfaced to any other device having a serial port. I've already built a second one to use with my computerized telescope. There really isn't much yet for apps available that'll drive the KX3 from Android, but that's my next project... 73, Dave NK0E __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KXPA100 Antenna Switching Problem
Hi Group, Quick question on the KXPA100. I have a brand new factory built unit with antenna tuner that seems to have a possible antenna switching problem. When I press and hold the Tune (ANT) button, the amp typically sounds as if a relay is chattering and the LED under 25 flashes. Almost like it doesn't recognize the switch command and attempts to go into the tune mode. Regardless of what it is doing, the antenna switching does not take place. I've also tried to switch using the KXPA utility and it will not make the switch either when the amp is acting like this. Now sometimes the switching will all function correctly from the button or utility. Anyone else experience similar issues when attempting to switch between antenna 1 and 2? Thanks! Congratulations and welcome aboard. There will be many first to come. 1st QSO , 1st DX many of us have been doing this for years, and still get excited over different things. To all who responded, thanks. Re: [Elecraft] K3 rtty decode vs: computer decode
Wes, I'm not an AFSK fan, so it would be another COM port for FSK/PTT plus a box with a couple of 2N's for the FSK and PTT lines. I'm satisfied with my pre-programmed Mx buffers with callsign, 599, TU, etc. for the few RTTY QSOs I make these days. 73, Barry W2UP P.S. Re: [Elecraft] K3 rtty decode vs: computer decode
Yes, the K3 certainly allows a multitude of modes, and within each mode, several ways of doing it. I'd really like to know ... no hidden aspersions here ... what the difference is between direct FSK and AFSK. I use AFSK with two RadioShack stereo cables between the laptop and the radio. N1MM with MMTTY for contests, or one of several other sound card-friendly programs for PSK and JT65 which I almost never use. I'd really like to know, I'm not kidding and I'm not casting any aspersions on any technique. My K3 provides for both, my AFSK seems to work great and when I look at my transmitted spectrum, it looks like FSK should look like. And this has nothing to do with the number of cables behind the rig, the back of my rack is visible as you come into the shack and my wife has asked, Why do you call it wireless? 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 3/23/2014 5:38 PM, Barry wrote: Wes, I'm not an AFSK fan, so it would be another COM port for FSK/PTT plus a box with a couple of 2N's for the FSK and PTT lines. Re: [Elecraft] HRD new version question
Steve No sliders for Hi Cut, Lo Cut Yes we do, that's Filter Shift and Filter width sliders. NB slider should be in the next beta. As for buttons lighting up, yes, the firmware has many buttons that are just toggles and have no way to poll the status. This is a firmware limitation. So if I cant ask the radio if they are turned on, then there is no way to handle status.. And no, an internal flag wouldn't help, as Id need to know what the status of the buttons are when HRD comes on. Programming 101... HRD and even the other nice program, Win4K3Suite, are limited by what we can do with the command set. Wayne and Erik are working on bugs and will be able to get to these requests for status in a future release. Bill, as I said to you in email, wait for the 6.2 release to try it, as you'll get 30 days free... with support. You don't have to buy HRD to test it, but 6.2 is in beta and ONLY for paid users until it's release. Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft owner.
That’s it! Done! Wow, what a job this was… Got the K3 all built and configured. Well, the necessary post-build configuration, that is. What is this weird descending tone when i was configuring the 100w amp unit? Is that normal? Seems to be gone now… The 5w and 50w TX Gain calibration went through fine. I guess i’ll listen to 10m tomorrow, when its light out. My hex beam project has not yet started so i’m limited to 10/12/15/17/20 meters with a 10m vertical (SPT-500) antenna. Anyways, looking forward to join the Elecraft SSB net some time soon. Slava (Sal) W2RMS. Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft owner.
Sal, Welcome to the Elecraft community. After a while, you may find yourself 'drinking the kool-aid' just like so many others. I do not recall any descending tone when I installed the KPA3, but it has been a long time and my memory of that has failed. Have fun with that K3 and keep up with the firmware upgrades for even more improvement - the K3 firmware has been quite stable for some time, but minor improvements are still being made occasionally. You may even want to try the beta firmware if there is something in the release notes that interests you. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/24/2014 12:24 AM, Slava Baytalskiy wrote: That’s it! Done! [Elecraft] [OT] Be Advised ... New Microsoft Outlook Email Spam-Filter False-Positives Bug!
This past week I emailed someone (Bob in Germany) but he didn't reply so a few days later I emailed him again. Upon replying to my second email, Bob indicated that he never received my first email! Fast-forward to this evening, while tweaking my next (700 Hz filter) Reflector post, I sent it to myself on a whim, only to find that it was misidentified as spam. Eventually I was able to determine that the culprit was my callsign on the signature line! I've already reported this issue to Microsoft, and as luck would have it, I had previously written the necessary regular expression code (see below) to identify any valid amateur radio callsign, so I provided that as well. Even though my code should save them many hours of research, coding, and testing; there's still no telling when or even if this recently introduced bug will be corrected! I mention this because it's unlikely mine is the only amateur radio callsign being misidentified by Microsoft Outlook's spam filter! 73, Gary Hvizdak (callsign omitted so that this message isn't mistakenly flagged as spam by Microsoft Outlook) --- - - - --- My regular expression code to identify any amateur radio callsign (hopefully it won't cause a false-positive) ... $us_1x23_2x123 = ((^[KNW][0-9][A-Z]{2,3}$)|(^((A[A-L])|([KNW][A-Z]))[0-9][A-Z]{1,3}$)); $dx_12x23 = (^(([ACDLPST][2-9])|([E][2-4])|([H][2-46-9])|([JV][2-8])|([Z][2-3])|([2-9][ A-Z])|([A][M-Z])|([B-JLMO-VXYZ][A-Z]?))[0-9][A-Z]{2,3}$); $dx_23x12 = (^(([ACDLPST][2-9][A-Z])|([E][2-4][A-Z])|([H][2-46-9][A-Z])|([JV][2-8][A-Z] )|([Z][2-3][A-Z])|([2-9][A-Z]{2})|([A][M-Z][A-Z]?)|([B-JLMO-VXYZ][A-Z]{1,2}) )[0-9][A-Z]{1,2}$); $any_call_regex = ~ . $us_1x23_2x123 . | . $dx_12x23 . | . $dx_23x12 . ~; __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
