Re: [Elecraft] K3 - static discharge

2016-11-11 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
If the KPOD is causing this due to static discharge, reverse ends on the
direction of the cable connecting it to the K3S or K3. The wire to pin one of
our supplied cable is supposed to be cut, but it is possible there is one end
with a wire still making the connection. (If you are supplying your own cable,
please make sure pin one is cut on both ends.)

[Elecraft] [FS] Pelican Storm Case for K3 and P3

2016-11-11 Thread rick jones via Elecraft
I have Pelecan iM2700 case that I picked up and re-purposed as a travel case
for a K3 + P3 with closed cell foam. I went portable and this case is excess to
my needs. Could be used as-is or re-worked into anything. Interior dimensions
22" x 17" x 8". It is tan in color. I expect the best way to ship would be to
just wrap it in a lot of plastic wrap and tape. Contact me off list for
pictures or to verify shipping costs. I am in MD and would be happy to arrange
an agreeable meet up location. New these things are $150, I only want to
re-coup my initial investment of $50+any shipping costs. Case is 20"x15" x 8"
and 13.5 lbs. Thanks, RickĀ

[Elecraft] Macro sequencing

2016-11-11 Thread Cady, Fred
We have seen some great macro ideas where a single function key is used to
toggle between two different K3 states, e.g. in and out of split, toggling
between two AGC THR settings, etc. Unfortunately, this idea cannot be used
(directly) with a KPod button. Each of the the 16 KPod buttons are dedicated
to a single macro and cannot be changed like the function key assignments can.

However, I just twigged onto the thought that you can assign a third macro to
be activated by a KPod key that then toggles the macro sequence. For example,
if you use a hold of PF2 to toggle in and out of split, that uses Macro 7 and
Macro 8 (say) you can assign SWH47; to Macro 9 and then tap the KPod F1 key to
run Macro 7 and then Macro 8 in sequence.

Don't why I didn't think of it before or if I missed it when somebody else
mentioned it.

have a good weekend all.

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD and SO2V

2016-11-11 Thread Rick Tavan
Most certainly! K*Pod has a three-position rocker switch that assigns the
knob to VFO A, VFO B, or RIT/XIT. If the second rx is enabled and the K*Pod
rocker is in the VFO B position, the pod knob tunes the second rx, even if
you're not presently listening to it. That's exactly how I operated SS last
weekend and found it relaxing to be able to move my left hand only a few
inches to the left to tune the sub. Go for it!

BTW, I use N1MM Logger which, like some other loggers, uses the tilde key
to turn the sub on and off when in SO2V mode. That's even closer to hand
than the K*Pod. But if you use a logger that doesn't implement that
convention, it would be handy to program a pod button, probably F8 or maybe
F4, to toggle the sub off and on.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 FC issue with filters

2016-11-11 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

Now we are cooking. I am glad you found the real problem. There is virtually
0 probability that reloading the same firmware will fix anything. There is
no such thing as a "busted firmware load" except the kind that leaves the
"CPU load" or similar message indicating that the bootloader firmware has
detected that the main software is faulty. This is typically caused by
either a power failure, communications interruption or similar problem
during firmware reload. File corruptions on the PC are extremely rare and
should it happen, the bootloader will detect that, too.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - static discharge

Hmmm ... not uncommon for our relative humidity to be in single digits,
and it's very often less than 20%. I never get shocked by static
discharge. However, when we lived in Auburn CA with numbers in the 30
to 50% range, it happened all the time. There must be more to it than
water vapor.

[Elecraft] Win4K3Suite + SDRPlay: Panadapter for the KX2 and KX3!

2016-11-11 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new release of Win4K3Suite that allows integration of the SDRPlay
RSP (Radio Spectrum Processor) with Win4K3 and the Elecraft KX2 and KX3. This
new solution provides a easy to use 1.8MHz bandwidth Panadapter with no need
for a sound card. Please note that you WILL need a transmit receive switch such
as the MFJ 1708 to prevent damage to the SDRPlay. To see the KX2 in operation
with the SDRPlay please check out the latest Win4K3Suite video on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxJq-aQivGk
Win4K3Suite turns your KX2 and KX3 into a powerful base station allowing the
use of the KXPA100 and even the KPA500 and KAT500. There is full support for
band switching without the need for additional hardware.
In addition, Win4K3Suite is a trouble free alternative to port sharing
applications with it's built in virtual serial port connections. You can
connect any software or hardware that supports CAT commands for the K3, K3S,
KX3 and KX2. It's like having 5 radios available at any time.
You can check out some reviews of the port sharing and other aspects here:
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/11214 and download the software from
va2fsq.com
There is a free full featured 30 day trial. Please contact me if you have
tried this in the past and would like an extension on your trial.
Thanks very much for your continued support.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - static discharge

2016-11-11 Thread Richard Fjeld
This is a huge problem in Minnesota due to the extreme cold causing
humidity on the windows and turning to ice.
It is difficult to hit a happy medium between avoiding static and wet
windows.

As for protecting my equipment, I have mentioned keeping a grounded
wrist strap around an Altoids can
by my stuffed chair. When I get up from the chair, I touch the can to
discharge my static build up.
At the K3, I touch the end of a small resistor that is connected to a
ground point on the nearby outlet
and protrudes above the face-plate from it's back.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Transmit EQ Settings

2016-11-11 Thread Jim Brown
As you may know, the 664 and 666 were EV's first "variable-D" mics --
the 666 was the pro version, the 664 for "PA." The 666 was known as the
Buchannon Hammer because Lou Burroughs, co-founder of EV with Al Kahn,
demonstrated their ruggedness by using one to drive a nail. (EV was in
Buchannon, MI; Lou taught workshops on microphones, and wrote a great
text on their use.)

Directional mics have "proximity effect" (bass boost when close to the
sound source) that results from their construction -- front and rear
openings to the capsule that cancel sound from the back of the mic.
Variable-D mics have almost none by virtue of one or more additional
openings along the "handle" of the mic. The EV RE16, RE20, and RE27 are
variable-D mics.

antenna. Often I will get a very noisy picture, with what appear to be
clouds near the middle and increasing noise toward the top and bottom
edge. I have the FM deviation as high as it will go in the menu.
Finally last night I was near(life is busy, usually I set it up and get
called away) the radio as a satellite was entering the horizon so I
unplugged the radio from the computer and listened. I could very
clearly hear the signal, but as the satellite got closer and closer to
over head as shown on gnome predict the audio started muting. It seemed
to mute as the frequency was being adjusted by gnome predict. By
default the frequency is adjusted every 1 second. When I changed it to
every 2 seconds it seemed to get better. Any idea why this is happening
and is there any sort of workaround? It doesn't seem to happen until
there is a strong signal. The software seems to be continuously
adjusting the radio's frequency even well before the satellite comes
into view and the static doesn't mute. Incidentally, initially I think
squelch was set to a 3, I ended up setting it to 0.

Any ideas?

What is the theoretical maximum deviation for FM this module can do? Be
helpful for this kind of thing to widen it up more...

Incidentally, the satellites transmit in the vicinity of 137MHz.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - static discharge

Yes, but they typically DO use a three wire (case at ground) power cord.
I make it a point to touch the metal side of the computer before anything
else.

A couple other recommendations would be to buy a cheap digital humidity
indicator and put one or more humidifiers* around the house.

I'm not sure what is the ideal humidity level, but our house here in
Virginia it would get down under 30% which results in lots of sparks AND
split fingers.

I try to get it nearer to 50% which seems to help both those conditions.

*I don't recommend the old fashioned steam units which simply have two
electrodes immersed in water such that the steam is created from the
electric current between them. Obviously, pure laboratory H2O won't work,
but a pinch of salt in the water makes the house lights dim (HI), neither of
which is a desirable situation. I don't like the ultrasonic units either
because for some reason, they caused a lot of dust to be deposited on our
flat screen TV. My opinion is that the best types are the ones that use a
wick element and fan to put moisture in the air.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - static discharge

To prevent static discharge problems with my computers, I have a bare ground
wire attached to the side of my desk. I touch it when I first sit down. In
the winter, it does draw a spark. Most computers are not well designed or
protected.

That said, I had no idea the K3 was susceptible to ESD - via the K-Pod.
