Re: [Elecraft] K-Line / ZeroFive Antennas

Jim …

How well it “works” will be almost entirely dependent on the radial system you
have installed and on the local noise level. I’d recommend at least 32
radials - as long as you have space for. On or in ground is fine.If you do
that, the performance and patterns should be approximately like the charts
shown in all the handbooks for verticals over a ground plane.

If you are asking about the ability of the tuners in the Elecraft products to
accommodate the mismatch on each band, that is a different question. In
general Elecraft’s tuners will handle up to a 10:1 SWR.

You are looking in the right place, in my opinion, with Siglent, Rigol, etc.
Another brand to look for is Hameg. They all offer lots of features and
value for the $$.
Great buys on Spectrum Analyzers there also, by the way ;>)

Back when I had my lab I had Agilent scopes, but if I were doing it over today,
I’d go with something like the above.

If you aren’t familiar with it, check out Dave Jones’s EEVBlog podcast. He has
dozens of detailed reviews of these scopes which include HD Video teardowns of
the internals as well as analysis of the circuitry. Should be available at
your favorite source of podcasts.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 S-meter characteristics

2020-04-24 Thread Craig Smith

It is very true that - in a contest situation - we aren’t often concerned with
measuring signal levels. No argument.

And, if contesting, DXing and rag chewing are all you use your K3 / K4 for,
then I understand why you aren’t interested in the additional bells & whistles
that are being discussed here.

But many of us use the K3 / K4 for other purposes also. Even with the current
implementation in the K3 / K3S, the dbm referenced signal measurement
capability is extremely useful. My K3 was invaluable when I had an
electronics lab as a very sensitive and selective calibrated RF voltmeter.
Used it constantly both for design and for troubleshooting during many
construction projects.

I think the kinds of enhancements being discussed here will be a valuable
addition to the K4 and encourage additional discussion.

Re: [Elecraft] I am flummoxed about my antenna

2018-12-01 Thread Craig Smith
Lee …

You’re on the right track with changing the coax. You have some sort of
resistive loss. As you note, the “bandwidth” is much higher than it should be.
My inverted L had a 2:1 SWR bandwidth of perhaps 35 KHz at most. Your low
SWR across the entire band indicates very low efficiency and some sort of loss
element(s).

After the coax, I’d look at connectors, insulators, etc. etc. Do you have any
feed-thrus, suppressors, or other things in the feed system?

I’d suggest first checking the SWR and bandwidth right at the antenna base with
the coax disconnected. Use a portable instrument.

Good Luck!

Thank You Ron for the audio clip.

I’ve seen various videos of Feynman’s work and have enjoyed them. But this
audio, in addition to his wonderful NYC accent, brought back a sound I do not
remember hearing in the past 45 years. And a sound that is precious (in
retrospect) to me - the sound of chalk hitting blackboard. That “leading
edge”, the audible signal that something important may follow, is an “attention
getter” that physicists and mathematicians will always be attuned to. It can
be heard about 2 minutes into your clip.

Thank You!

Re: [Elecraft] Dimmable LED desk lamp for operating position recommendation needed

Greetings Peter …

Have a look at this one:

I’m not claiming this is the highest quality lamp ever made. I also do not
currently have a way of assessing the EMI situation with your setup. However,
it is an amazingly versatile lamp and well worth the $13 price! Even if you
select something else, you may want to have one of these around for other
purposes.

Some of the things I like about it:

Very small and light and easily moved around for the task at hand.

Convient recharge from any USB port.

3 selectable light intensities.

Very long time between recharges. I use mine fairly intermittently, but get 2
or 3 months usage on a charge.

For $13, it can be considered a throw-away item if you don’t end up liking it.

Re: [Elecraft] Sloping Terrain vs Feedline Losses

2016-07-12 Thread Craig Smith
Ted …

I think you are overstating the coax losses. Even stock RG-11 should be
perhaps 0.3 dB/100ft on 80 meters - around 1.5 dB for the 500 ft. run.

Even so, I would probably gravitate toward the closer location. With the
elevated radials, the effects of the ground conductivity should be minimal.
Not sure if ON4UNs data assume elevated radials or many on-ground radials. It
could be that his estimate of the sloping ground advantage is for the later.
With the closer location, you will have perhaps 1 dB stronger signal in all
directions because of the lower feedline loss.

Re: [Elecraft] Filtering RFI from LED & flouresence Dimmer Switches

Thanks for the garage door opener experience. I had my door and opener
replaced a few months ago. The manual for the opener (Lift Master)
specifically says not to use LED bulbs. I was scratching my head over that
but did use CFLs in the opener. I asked the installer why that recommendation
was there, and he said he didn’t know why LEDs couldn’t be used. But, as your
experience shows, it appears that it can indeed be a problem. Probably the
close proximity of the opener receiver to the poorly filtered (for some bulbs)
switch-mode converters in the bulbs.

Re: [Elecraft] LED Lamps and HF RFI?

2015-05-11 Thread Craig Smith
You are wise, Ted, to be cautious about this.

As you implied, it is not the LEDs themselves but how they are driven.

LEDs are current driven devices and, for a given intensity, are typically
driven by a constant current source. In the case of a panel LED in a K3 or
whatever it is easy to do this by just using a series dropping resistor as an
analog current source and not worrying about the lost power in the resistor.
This approach will be quiet in terms of RFI.

In home lighting applications, the currents are higher as are the desires for
high efficiency and minimum power loss. So a switching regulator type of
current source is employed, either on a lamp-by-lamp basis or be connecting
several lamps in series with one current source. The switch mode current
source can indeed be noisy. Even though in theory it could be made fairly
quiet by means of good layout, control over wave shaping, extensive filtering,
and high quality compliance testing, all of that typically does not happen in a
cost-driven application such as home lighting.

You asked for people with good data. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.
I'm not even sure if good data exits on lighting RFI in a real-world
applications.Even if a manufacturer characterizes the EMI performance in a
data sheet, things are sometimes cost reduced later in manufacturing (less
filtering) and can also be compromised by improper installation and grounding
by a contractor.

Conceptually, I'm a big fan of LED lighting and have several types in various
places in the house. But back when I was active on the air I made sure that
I could turn them all OFF easily on contest weekends, etc.

The bottom line is that nothing is quieter than incandescent. I wish that that
wasn't the case as the energy savings with LED are significant. Perhaps in 10
years it won't be a concern. But right now I would be cautious and have a
"plan B" for lighting when operating.

But I do have several automatically syncing clocks in the house and have
noticed that he syncing isn't as robust and dependable as it was some years
ago. For example, switching from standard to daylight savings time and back
takes some of them a few days to accomplish, with some of them switching back
and forth from day to day before finally getting it right. Don't think that
signal strength is the problem.

As someone else noted, it sure would be good to know which manufacturers use
the new standard!

I also had very good results with the Gamma with my K3. In CW mode, it will
support an output power of about 75W. More on SSB I would guess.

Re: [Elecraft] Internal Impedance of Li-Ion Battery Packs

2014-08-04 Thread Craig Smith
It seems to me that using the two smaller packs would have some advantages for
your application. They would each be able to power both the KX-3 and the
amplifier, just for about half the time of the single larger battery. So you
would have to switch over to the other battery at some point. But using two
does offer redundancy in the event of a battery failure. Also, dividing the
weight into two chunks may be advantageous for the folks who are humping them
up the mountain.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Diversity antenna experiences?

2013-12-08 Thread Craig Smith
Sounds like a fairly good experience overall, Jim.

I'm on an even smaller (< 0.25 acre) HOA restricted lot and had an inverted L
on 160 that I used in conjunction with a K9AY receive antenna. I really liked
the K9AY, as it allowed for directional switching and very good S/N ratios with
a very small footprint. Much better at RX than the inverted L. I also had
it set up for diversity but noted the same thing you did with your BOG Beverage
- the K9AY was so much better I just ended up using it without diversity for RX.

One issue is that for optimal diversity reception the two antennas need to be
spaced a fair distance apart in terms of wavelength. I certainly didn't have
that here (K9AY and inverted L only about 60 feet apart). Even with your one
acre, you might not have enough separation, depending on your layout.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] - PAR HF OMNI ANGLE

2013-09-26 Thread Craig Smith
Both the PAR omniangle and the doublet are excellent antennas.

The 44 ft doublet on 17 meters has a pattern with several sharp lobes, and its
gain will vary considerably depending upon which direction the signal is coming
from. In some directions it will be significantly better than the Omniangle,
and in some directions significantly worse. I believe that this is likely
what Stan was experiencing with the contact in his video.

The obvious advantage of the Omniangle is size. The big advantage of the
doublet is easy multi-band operation (with the tuner). Its gain vs. desired
direction can be either an advantage or disadvantage.

[Elecraft] FS: Fair-Rite Type 31 Mix Large Clamp-on Ferrite Cores

2012-11-05 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale a quantity of 8 large Fair-Rite type 31 mix clamp-on cores.
These are the best available cores for conveniently making high performance
common-mode chokes over the HF amateur bands. Fair-Rite PN is 0431177081 and
the Mouser PN is 623-0431177081. I purchased these new from Mouser over the
past few years. Some have been used outside on temporary contest antennas,
some used inside for noise suppression in shack and on appliances. Some have
not been used. All are in perfect condition mechanically and electrically
with at most some slight discoloration on the exterior plastic. Closing down
the station here, so no longer have a use for them.

Core OD is a little over 2 inches, ID is about 1 inch and length is about 1.7
inches. Can be used to easily make multi-turn chokes even on RG-8 sized coax.
Please see K9YC’s excellent tutorial on his website for extensive applications
information and reference designs.

The current low quantity Mouser price for these is $19.70 each. Selling all
eight for $120. Your purchase includes secure packaging and USPS Priority Mail
shipping to your USA address. PayPal only, please. If interested, please

[Elecraft] OT: For Sale - Array Solutions AIM 4170 Antenna Analyzer plus extras

2012-09-18 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale my AIM4170 antenna analyzer SN 3049. I purchased this new in
2007 and it is in perfect working condition. This has been one of my best ever
purchases and has been invaluable for both antenna and lab measurements. Am
cleaning out the lab and shack in preparation for a move, so time to let this
one go.

This is perhaps the best antenna analyzer on the market, especially for use in
the shack. It does require connection to a computer for control and display,
but gives awesome results including ability to save and print analysis results
in graphical form. The software allows for easy calibration at the far end of
your coax run, and this capability permits you to see exactly what the antenna
itself is doing without the effects of the transmission line - this feature
alone makes this analyzer worthwhile. This has been a terrific asset here for
designing and building many homebrew antennas. But I have actually used it
much more often as a piece of lab gear. It provides a very useful signal
generator with a range of 5 KHz to 180 MHz. The analyzer is quite handy for
measuring the characteristics of filters and chokes as well as accurately
measuring components at any frequency of your choice. Makes for a better L and
C meter than anything available for less than $1000. Excell
ent impedance measurements showing both series and parallel R, L and C
components as well as phase angle. Very accurate for impedances up to 10
Kohms. Can also do TDR measurements. Too many features and functions to list
here, but see the information available on the website - www.arraysolutions.com
 - for more detail. Look for model AIM4170C. The latest manual, etc., can
also be downloaded here.

This unit is the original version rather than the C version, but was upgraded
last year by Array Solutions to be equivalent to the 4170C. Upgrade included
installing the version 5.8 firmware and larger coupling caps for the extended
low frequency response. Fully functionally equivalent to the 4170C. Only
difference is that this unit still has the BNC output connector rather than the
UHF connector shipped on newer units. I actually much prefer the BNC for lab
work and for ease of connecting antennas.

I'm also including the optional serial to USB converter. I have used this with
my Dell computer and it has functioned perfectly with the AIM4170. This
converter works with Windows XP or earlier. Converters for use with Vista or
Windows 7 are readily available from Array Solutions as well as many other
sources. Or, the 4170 can be used with any RS232 serial interface directly.

I am also including a test jig I built for component characterization. This is
a small box that plugs into the AIM output connector and offers several options
for connecting components for easy and convenient measurement. There are
Grayhill component clips for axial components, 0.1 inch headers for capacitors
and radial leads, and a clip arrangement for attaching components in SMT
packages. The AIM software allows for easy calibration for any of these
attachment points to eliminate the strays of the test fixture. The jig also
has a momentary switch to provide a short during the calibration process.

Also included are some additional resistive standards I've used at the far end
of coax runs as well as a Pomona BNC to banana plug adapter and 50 ohm
termination.

Your purchase also includes the AC wall adapter, all the original documentation
as well as a collection of product reviews and application notes that I have
found useful.

Price is $440. PayPal only, please. Shipping via UPS insured ground in the
lower 48 should be from $17 to $22 depending on your distance from Colorado.
Please provide your zip and I can give you an exact quote on the shipping.

If interested, please contact me directly via email: cr...@powersmith.net

[Elecraft] OT: For Sale - Clifton Labs Active Antenna System plus extras

2012-09-10 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale a Clifton Labs Active Antenna system plus extras as will be
described below. This is a receive-only active whip with a very small
footprint and visual impact that is ideal for use with a K3 as a secondary
vertically polarized antenna for diversity reception. Specified frequency
range is 20 KHz to 30 MHz, but will receive up to 100 MHz with reduced
performance.

The system has two main components: A remotely located whip with a
preamplifier at its base (Z1501D), and an in-shack control unit /antenna
coupler (Z1203A). The antenna coupler requires the typical 13.8V nominal DC,
but will operate over a wider range. The coupler unit supplies power to the
remote preamplifier over the coax interconnecting cable. A control cable
between the coupler unit and a transceiver can be used to turn off the antenna
amplifier when transmitting (automatic muting). This will easily follow CW
keying for QSK. It interfaces well with the K3 for this purpose.

This product was designed by Jack Smith, K8Z0A, and is an example of the
bullet-proof (both electrically and mechanically) products that he provides. I
purchased this system new in 2010 and it has been performing flawlessly in my
diversity RX setup. It has been a terrific addition to my CW contesting
station which I am now in the process of decommissioning. The amplifier section
is very robust. 3rd order output intercept is +40 dBm. 2nd order output
intercept > +73 dBm. In addition to ham band usage, this antenna is great for
SWL and broadcast band listening.

For additional information, complete specifications, application notes, photos,
etc. see the excellent Clifton Labs website: http://cliftonlaboratories.com

The black whip antenna is adjustable from 22 to 112 inches in length so that
you can adjust it for the sensitivity you desire. The whip and amplifier
assembly can be mounted to a vertical pipe from 1 to 2 inches in diameter with
the supplied U bolts. Or it can be screwed to a post or fence. I had mine
attached to a perimeter wooden fence mounted about 6 ft above ground and it
worked very well. I painted the external amplifier and mounting bracket with a
textured medium gray/brown paint which gives a very stealth appearance if you
live in an antenna restricted location such as mine.

The transmitter control cable is terminated in RCA connectors. The power
cable is set up with a PowerPole plug. All the signal cable connectors are
BNC. The length and type of cable between the two units is very non-critical.
It can be either 50 or 75 ohm. I used a combination of RG-58 and RG-8X, but
even smaller cable such as RG-174 could be used as well as CATV 75 ohm cable.

I added a three position switch and a yellow LED to the antenna coupler unit.
The switch allows for manually turning the antenna on or off as well as using
the automatic control for muting from a transmitter. The yellow LED shows the
power state of the antenna amplifier itself, while the standard green LED shows
when DC is connected to the unit. This setup provides some additional
operational flexibility compared to the stock arrangement.

I also designed and built some common-mode chokes to use in the coax between
the two units. This addition, while not absolutely required, will allow for
enhanced common-mode rejection of strong local signals. There is one small
choke directly at the output of the remote amplifier. I am also supplying two
other larger chokes, each packaged in water resistant enclosures with BNC
connectors. Each of these chokes is comprised of 6 turns of coax on two type
31 large beads (Fair-rite PN 2631102002). This provides very good common-mode
rejection from below 500 KHz to over 30 MHz. Test data are supplied. I
mounted one of these midway in the coax run and the second one just before the
coax entered the house. Each of these chokes has a connection to the coax
shield on both sides of the inductor. These can be used to easily connect any
of these points to a ground rod. This connection can be used to optimize the
overall common-mode rejection, but experimentation will be require
d as a function of your location, system layout and frequency of the
common-mode signal you are trying to minimize. In my case, I had two of these
points tied to ground. Note that the system will work well in most all cases
without using any of these chokes!

Your purchase includes the whip, remote antenna amplifier, in-shack antenna
coupler/control unit, mounting hardware, all manuals and documentation,
schematics, DC power cable, control cable for muting when transmitting, and the
three common-mode chokes. You need only supply the coax interconnecting
cable(s).

This system currently sells for $290. My price is $200. PayPal only, please.
Shipping via insured ground UPS should be from $15 to $20 depending on your
lower 48 QTH. Provide your zip and I can give you the exact amount.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - panadapter or subreceiver

2012-07-02 Thread Craig Smith
I have both with my K3. If I could have only one, it would definitely be the
P3. The sub RX is great for diversity receive which helps a lot in CW
contesting. But the P3, as other have pointed out, lets you quickly find where
to place your signal when trying to find a good run frequency. For DXing, I
think it is pretty much a tossup.

But one aspect of the P3 that no one has recently mentioned is that it makes a
SUPERB piece of test equipment when used with the K3. I don't have a dedicated
spectrum analyzer but found that the P3 meets many of these needs. I use it
when designing and characterizing filters. The ability to easily download and
print out plots in full high resolution color is amazing. I often use it with
the Elecraft noise source as an input signal. Of course I have the general
coverage bandpass filters K3 option, which I highly recommend. And the K3's
functionality as a calibrated tunable RF voltmeter is awesome as well.

The P3 is also invaluable as a tool for tracking down EMI. You can see the type
of signal and how it is moving in frequency vs. time. I use it for this both
with the K3 and also as a portable battery powered standalone EMI receiver by
setting the programmable IF frequency to the range of interest and using a
small hand-held loop antenna.

For anyone with an interest in home brewing and circuit design, I can't
recommend the K3/P3 combo highly enough.

Re: [Elecraft] New KAT500 pics from the Visalia DX convention

2012-04-24 Thread Craig Smith
It boils down to personal preference, and I like BNCs. UHF seem really large
and clunky to me, and I don't like having to unscrew them rather than just a
small twist. One factor that other folks might not have is that I run strictly
low power and the largest coax I have anywhere in my station is LMR-240 size.
So using a large connector seems like overkill to me. I also invested in a
good crimp tool and make all my own BNC cables and have yet to have a failure.
So to me, there is zero downside to using BNCs. But I appreciate that others
may have a different opinion.

Steve has done some amazing things with mobile ham gear and computers,
especially considering that much of his work was done in the 70s and 80s.
Subsequent to his mobile recumbent bicycle projects, last I knew he was working

control.

Steve stayed overnight with me on one of his cross-country bike trips around

[Elecraft] FS: Gamma Research HPS1-a Power Supply

2012-03-27 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale a Gamma Research HPS1-a power supply. This is a unique supply
that is optimized for providing reliable power to a 100W class transceiver such
as a K2 or K3 in the smallest and lightest possible package. It is thus ideal
for portable operation, DXpeditions, etc. The supply architecture combines a
traditional switching converter with a large ultra-cap to provide additional
power capability for operating modes with less than 100% duty cycle. With my
K3, this supply provides capability for output powers of 30-35W RTTY, 75W CW
and 100W SSB. The unit is in mint condition and works perfectly. I'm selling
it because I've curtailed my portable operation.

The power supply weighs only 1.25 pounds! and is 3.4 by 1.6 by 5.2 inches in
size. Output voltage is 13.8 Vdc nominal. Rated at 5A continuous and 22A at
25% duty cycle. For complete specs see: www.gammaresearch.net

Your purchase includes the Gamma Research instruction sheet, an adapter to
convert the Molex output connector to a standard PowerPole and insured USPS
Priority Mail shipping to your USA address. Price is $155 via PayPal.

[Elecraft] FS CG-3000 Automatic Remote Tuner - as is

2012-03-21 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale a CG-3000 Automatic remote antenna tuner. This unit is
functional, and just recently removed it from an antenna that I am no longer
using. I purchased the unit new in 2008 from Array Solutions and it has been
working flawlessly since then in my application of tuning verticals and
inverted Ls. It has been installed outdoors at the base of a tree in my back
yard.

I'm listing (and pricing it) as "as is" for two reasons. It has been out in
the weather for over 3 years so cosmetically it isn't great. The label on the
top surface, for example, is completely worn away. Secondly, when I just now
tested it in preparation for selling, it seems to only obtain a SWR of 3:1
rather than the speced 2:1 on 10 meters. Only tested on one antenna and
perhaps my K3 SWR metering isn't as accurate on this band. I've never used it
on 10 meters, so don't have any historical reference point. It works fine on
the other bands, matching a 37 ft vertical to SWRs from 1.1 to 1.6 on all bands
80 through 12 meters. I've used it successfully in the past on 160 meter
inverted Ls.

The unit is completely automatic. It tunes by sampling the RF input, and
requires a minimum of 10W and is therefore not suitable for QRP. I have the
tune power of my K3 set to 13W and this has always worked just fine. It has
200 memories for storing previous frequencies so subsequent tuning is very
fast. Power rating is 200W. Rated to operate from 1.8 to 30 MHz. Requires 12
to 14 Vdc power supply. I've been just running a two conductor cable for this
purpose, but you could also use a bias-T on the coax. Average operating
current is 0.5A, but you should have up to 1A available for instances when
several of the tuning relays activate at once. For additional information see
www.cgantenna.com and also the eham reviews.

Just now opened it up again and verified that everything inside is in pristine
condition. Absolutely no sign of water intrusion, probably due to the good
gasketing of the top cover.

Original owners manual (sparse) is included as well as some additional
technical and applications info I've found on the web. It appears possible to
construct a control head to manually initiate tuning via a 3 conductor
power/control cable, but I have not tried this.

This unit should provide an inexpensive but serviceable remote tuning solution
for many applications. Not in same league as the upcoming KAT500, however.

Price is $100 via PayPal plus UPS ground shipping. Shipping weight should be
7 pounds from 80503 zip.

If you have interest or questions, contact me directly via Email.

Hi Ken …

Just checked the Fair-rite website, and the type 31 cores are indeed there.
But they aren't easy to find. You need to go to Products then Cable
components then EMI suppression beads.

They have a wide variety of part numbers using type 31 material.

I buy mine from Mouser which has no minimum order quantities, good stocking,
reasonable prices and wonderful delivery and service. I can't speak to their
service to Canada. I've bought many different PNs of type 31 from them.
After you find the PNs you are interested in from the Fair-rite site, do a
search on those PNs in the Mouser site.

Have fun & 73

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 preamp sufficient for K9AY?

2011-11-17 Thread Craig Smith
Unless you live in a very quiet area, you won't need a preamp, Jim. My K9AY
is smaller than average and even with its lower sensitivity I have never needed
an external preamp. In fact, I normally have the K3 internal preamp OFF on 80
and 160. Even use the attenuator or back off the RF gain sometimes.

Re: [Elecraft] Resistance Checks on pg. 45 (K3)

2011-07-20 Thread Craig Smith

I have a functioning K3 here and also a Fluke 115, which is quite similar to
the 117.

On the ohms range the meter reads OL. On the Kohms range it reads about 4
Kohms.

I think Don is right and it is OK to proceed. If your reading was
substantially LESS than 4 K I would be concerned.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports

2011-07-12 Thread Craig Smith
I certainly understand the impracticality in terms of cost and size of
designing the basic KAT500 with a large number of output ports. My personal
wish is that an optional external Elecraft unit will eventually be available
that will allow for port expansion based on the user's desire for number and
configuration. It should be waterproof (or easily made so) and controlled by
the same bus as the external KAT500.

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X K3 Book 20% saving

2011-06-25 Thread Craig Smith
Thanks, everyone, for the useful info in the book options. I decided to go
with the PDF version. Based on my quick browse through it, it looks like lots
of helpful information nicely arranged. I'll move the PDF to my IPad for
convenient searching and probably print out only selected sections for a
hardcopy reference.

Question: what is your plan for later revisions? If ordering a PDF are later
revisions included with the purchase? If ordering a printed bound copy do you
also get PDF access?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application software

2009-12-23 Thread Craig Smith

Two items here:

RX EQ by mode - or at least one separate setting for CW!

Build as much flexibility and functionality as humanly possible into the P3,
even if much of it is optional. Perhaps the last near-term opportunity to add
major hardware to the K3 and provide extra switches and operator interface
capabilities.

Thanks for a GREAT product! Happy holidays and 73.

Wayne,

Even though I am a brand new K3 owner (received last week), we really need a
software program to manage memories. Need to read and write to the K3, freq,
mode, offset for fm repeater work

This is really basic to radios I have had for over 5 years….anyway, hope
this makes the priority list.

Thanks for a great Radio!

Add another positive vote for these speakers. I've been using them with my K3
after trying others, including non-powered speakers. I find them to be perfect
for my use. Never a hint of any RF issues, and they sound GREAT with the K3.
Nice and small, including the price.

[Elecraft] K3 RS232 Utility Problem

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-200

2009-05-19 Thread Craig Smith
I'm with you on this one, Keith! I'm a low power CW contester and
would surely enjoy using the 150 or 200 W power limit when appropriate
instead of accepting the db or so of loss with my 100W K3. I have NO
interest in running a KW, however, so high power amps have no appeal
here. A small amp with internal power supply with 200W or more
capability would be quite interesting. For my purposes it wouldn't
even need to be linear. As someone else pointed out, class C, D or E
could make for an interesting design!

Re: [Elecraft] OT - SteppIR Vertical and Elecraft Products

2009-05-16 Thread Craig Smith
I think you have arrived at a good understanding of the benefits/limitations of
both the StepIR and the remote tuner approaches. I use the remote tuner
approach, but would think that the StepIR should give similar results. And, as
you point out, the total costs of the two approaches are somewhat similar.
Most of the manual labor is involved with the radial field, which is a constant
for any approach.

There are a couple of less expensive alternatives if you are mostly interested
in a couple/few bands rather than the complete 80 thru 10 range. All of these
vertical element heights can be attained with a light weight fiberglas mast of
at most 40 ft. This is easy to put up and take down. I can do mine in less
than 2 minutes. So the least expensive approach would be to use different
element lengths for your bands of interest and making them resonant so that no
tuner is required.

Another option would be to use the 43 ft height and customized relay selected
matching networks in an enclosure at the base for your bands of interest - say
40, 30 and 20. This is fairly easy to accomplish at the 100W level. If the
number of networks is reasonable (3 in this example), this customized tuner can
be constructed for significantly less expense than purchasing a new autotuner.
In this example you could reduce expenses further by making the vertical
resonant on 30 and using only two matching networks for 40 and 20.

[Elecraft] K1: Advice on Options

2008-08-06 Thread Craig Smith

I prefer the smaller tuning range, Dave. Makes for much easier
tuning. FYI, the advertised tuning ranges are only approximations.
Mine ended up at about 85 KHz, which is fine.

The internal tuner would be convenient. I use the external T1 tuner
instead, as it has the capability to match a wider range of loads.

I use external AGM battery packs of various sizes, and am quite happy
with this arrangement. In place of the power connector I brought out
a short pigtail cable through a grommet and terminated with a
PowerPole connector. This is a slick setup.

One option you didn't mention that I really like is the stand. It's
kind of heavy, but provides a very sturdy base with lots of
adjustability for various operating positions both in the shack and in
the field.

Thanks, Eric, for the update. This is exactly the kind of info I was
hoping for from Elecraft on the diversity filter issue. Now I can
complete the process of finalizing my RX3 and filter order to
complement my existing 5 pole filters. The $30 fee for matching to
the offsets I already have is reasonable enough.
