[Elecraft] K2 -100 For Sale

2012-03-01 Thread Dave & Jeanne
Everyone,
I guess I screwed up when I first posted my first K2 sale posting Today.
My K2 is a 100 watt unit with serial numbers in the 5000 area. The amp
is in the top of the K2's case while the coupler is in it's original
case and serves as the base of the K2. Internal devices include the
KSB2, KNB2, and digital signal processor unit (KDSP2). It works fine and
is in a non smoking environment. Only issue is sometimes the KDSP2 might
not come up when first powering up the radio. The fix is to power cycle
the k2 and the DSP unit boots and works fine. Asking $800.00 or any
reasonable offer. Shipping depends on buyer's location and offer made.
Reason for selling the K2 is purchasing a KX3 and need the money.

[Elecraft] Tokyo High Power HL-1.5-KFX

2011-10-01 Thread Dave & Jeanne
Everyone.
Sorry for the bandwidth but I had thought the Tokyo High Power
HL-1.5-KFX 1 KW linear was sold. The deal fell through as the buyer felt
I was less than honest when presenting the facts about the linear. Well
it is for sale again. you can google Tokyo High Power or HL-1.5-KFX and
find out all about it. I would be willing to send pictures and supply
any other information you want about the linear. Please note that there
is a small scratch on the top rear of the case that is almost totally
polished out otherwise the linear is in excellent condition. It costs me
$3,200 new from HRO about a year ago. It is in a nonsmoking environment
and has been carefully used. Anybody interested please feel free to
contact me directly with questions of reasonable offers.

[Elecraft] [K3] Tokyo High Power

2010-10-10 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
Does anyone use the Tokyo High Power linear amp (HL-1.5kfx) with their K3? If
you do I need to ask how you connect the auto band switching to the linear with
the K3?

The manual doesn't refer to the K3 at all but refers to Kenwood. It appears to
use a Serial connection from the rig to the amp and is restricted to 9600 baud
comm speed. I have a P3 and it requires a 38400 baud connection. For a test I
tried to change the baud rate to 9600 only to have the K3 change it back to
38400 (note the P3 is connected during this time). It appears that you cannot
use the P3 at the same time you use auto band switching in the THP linear. Am I
correct in this assumption and if I am not could you please enlighten me.
Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] K3 AM

2010-04-10 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
John,

Setting your power control to 110 watts will produce about 28 watts of carrier
power and about 78 watts peak which is normal. I have received very good audio
reports on AM both running barefoot or using my linear and limiting my carrier
power to no more then 120 watts.

I am assuming you have the K3's antenna tuner. If you do then initially you
must tap the ATU Tune button to get your swr down. The K3 will remember the
antenna tuner settings for that band and the area of the band. The only time
you have to repeat it is when you change the antenna for that band. The antenna
tuner in the K3 doesn't automatically tune up, you must do it from the ATU
button. Because I change antennas from time to time I always tap the ATU button
just to be sure everything is ok.
Running less then 10 watts switches out the 100 watt amp so if you let the rig
transmit with 5 watts with high SWR you will tax the 10 watt PA

 Subject: your K3 AM Tip

Thanks for your tip about using split for AM. I made a few contacts one
evening on 80M, but I was not sure how to set the power out. The manual has
virtually no info on AM operation. How do you set the power out? I have
information on how to set power out for an amp, but not the K3. I have an old
friend that works AM on 40M so I need to learn how to do this right.

By the way I almost smoked something in the 10 watt amp in the K3. I am
used to turning the power to around 5 watts on my ond Ten Tec gear and tuning
the antenna tuner. I forgot that the K3 has TWO amps, and I got the low power
one smelling on high SWR before I noticed it and quit. Everything seems OK but
one day I am going to open it up and see what is discolored and change it out.
I did not build mine, I bought it used and it is factory built. I should have
built one then I would know this type of stuff.

If you have time please let me know about the AM setup.

Sorry, Dick

Plenty of others have had that "killed it by starting a browser"
experience, including myself. It WAS a P4 with memory being stretched
by security patches, etc.

I now have a PC based on a quad-core Intel I7 920 with 6 gig of almost
cache speed 3 channel memory. I don't worry about it now.

If you are running a PC with a single core processor and/or limited
memory (as in an older PC which you have kept to use for logging
programs), better to not tempt fate. PC's and Windows can do strange
things when swapping a lot of memory in and out to disk, which could
not be blamed on the utility, apparently including overwriting memory
in use by the utility. It's Windows blowing the multitasking, not
Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 No output in digital mode

2009-11-08 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
Thanks for the reply. Increasing the number of bars on the ALC ( by either
increasing the mic gain or audio drive from the computer) has no effect on
the getting output power. leaving the audio drive where is is (3 bars) and
changing modes on the K3 then returning to Digital A mode will now produce
the requested output power. This indicates the audio drive is not a problem.
Holding the TUNE button starts the problem of no RF out again.

Last night I received an e-mail from Wayne Burdick of Elecraft indicated
they have solved the problem and it will be released in a beta soon.

[Elecraft] No output in digital mode

2009-11-07 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
When operating in digital A modes after holding the TUNE button, which gives
the proper power out indication, the following happens when going into PSK
transmit:
1, There is no power out of the K3
2, The ALC readout is showing the usual 3 bars and can be adjusted
3, There is no monitoring tone ( I have the monitor set at 6 to monitor my
output signal on psk).

Changing modes to USB and back to Data A mode temporarily fixes the problem
until you hold the TUNE button again while in Data A mode.

The firmware revisions that have this problems are;
3.44, 3.45 (a special firmware sent to me by Elecraft), and 3.52.

Revisions 3.42 and below work fine. Others have reported this but I just wanted
to give my $0.02 worth.

[Elecraft] Noise Clicks

2009-11-01 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
After installing 3.52 i also notice noise clicks when making width adjustments
in SSB CW and Didital mode (Digital-A). I do not have my NB or NR on. This
noise is only present with signals. with no signals there is no noise when
adjusting width.

[Elecraft] K3 and Beta 3.44

2009-10-20 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
Everyone,
I installed Beta 3.44 (was at 3.42) and noticed the following:

When operating in TX DATA (DATA A Mode) I fine that my RF Output seems to
really take a long time to properly adjust itself to the desired power out.
Sometimes there is no output power even though the K3 is in transmit. If I
monitor the transmitted audio I fine there is none. (The computer is outputting
audio).

During this problem if I hold the XMIT button I do get the desired output but
trying in XT DATA mode still has no output though the K3 is in transmit.

If I go into USB and back into TX DATA (Data A) mode or power cycle the K3,
then I have output power but it seems to take a long time to adjust itself.

Reinstalling Firmware 3.32 totally solves the above problems.

Just to be sure I wasn't imagining things I reinstalled Beta 3.44 and the
problems reappeared, installing beta 3.42 fixed everything

It seems there is a problem with 3.44 Beta firmware unless I am screwing up
somewhere.

This K2 is the qrp model with 11.5 watts out on all bands (plus some) and about
10.5 watts out on 10 meters at 28.388 MHZ.
This k2 is equipped with the following features:
KSB2 SSB Upgrade.
KIO2 Serial interface.
KAT2 QRP Antenna coupler.
The serial number of the K2 is 5240.
The K2 comes with all manuals as well as the manuals for all the up-grade

[Elecraft] K3 Temperature Readings

2008-05-31 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
Everyone,

How do I display my FP and Heat Sink temperatures on the front Panel?

I did the calibration and the book explains that you tap Display and use XFO B
to select the temperature reading you want displayed.
When I tap Display all I can select is Time, Date, Current, and Voltage. No
temp readings>

Could someone enlighten me on the error of my ways. Thanks.

[Elecraft] K3 Low Power FM

2008-05-25 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
Here is an update on my low power out on fm.

With all filter in place and with several checks on configuration and reloading
the radio's firmware I had no success in getting out any more then 2 watts out
max on FM.

I removed the FM filter and replaced it with a .001 UF capacitor. I was
successful in putting out any amount of power I selected on FM. I monitored the
transmittion and it produces a very clean FM signal. So either there is
something wrong with the filter or RF Board.

Any comments (constructive please).

Thanks

Okay people I have a question.

How do I get more then 2 watts out of my K3 on FM?

I have the FM filter installed and turned on. I have the FM filter bandwidth
set at 13 KHZ..
I can tune successfully and put out power in all modes except FM (2 watts out
max.

The MF mode is working I checked it with another receiver but no real power out.

My K3 has an operating KPA3 and tuner.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] Computer Speakers

Anyone,
I will soon be receiving my K3 and I do have a question.

Normally my computer line out connects to my computer speakers. When I get my
K3 is there a speaker connection on the K3 that will also output audio out from
the computer such as when not using the radio but still using the computer?

Or do I have to get a stereo Y connector at the line out connection on the K3?

This may have been presented to the forum before but
I have not seen it.

Be careful with exposing your K2 to strong magnetic
fields, especially ones from power transformers.

I just finishing restoring an old Heathkit SB220
linear and in setting up the station placed the
linear to the left of the K2.

When I was using the linear I started to notice some
strange distortion in the received audio from the K2
and other stations commented on distortion on my
audio.

On CW all the received signals seem to have a
strange AC ripple on them. It was a very small
amount but still there. Stations receiving me also
reported a slight amount of ripple on my signal.

All this is while the linear was on but not
necessarily being used (I installed a Standby switch
in the SB220).

With the linear powered down, everything was
perfectly normal, both on received and transmitted
signals.

The power transformers in the SB220 are on the
linear's right side. This was the side the K2 was
located near.

I rearranged the station to have an antenna coupler
between the K2 and the SB220 linear, a spacing of
about 10 inches, and that totally solved the AC
ripple problem both on transmit and receive with the
linear powered up and on-line.

Just thought I would pass this on to everyone.

[Elecraft] C227

2007-01-26 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
Mike
After looking at your picture I think I would only replace C227, Clean up the
board around it, then test it out (in a dummy load). Don't think the relay is
gone but those type of capacitors do sometimes fail. In your case you were
trying to couple good VSWR into the rig but haven't succeeded yet and that
capacitor took a voltage spike. Those capacitors do emit a lot of smoke when
they fail.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Issue

2007-01-26 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Thanks for your reply Geoff.

I think that the reason the screws loosen isn't because of twisting out, but
because the heat sink material that is placed between the power transistors
and the heat sink is cold flowing.

Many plastics will, under pressure, actually flow a bit and change it's
shape ( in this case becoming thinner). After a period of time the plastic
assumes it's final new shape.

Using locktite (especially the permanent type) will make it very challenging
to remove the screws when needed.

Another idea would be using heat sink compound (a form of heat conducting
paste) instead of the pads provided by Elecraft. The mounting bracket of the
power transistors is insulated from the transistor itself by a heat
conducting oxide so no insulating material is needed for mounting. Just
mounting the transistor to the heat sink will not provide enough thermo
conductivity between the transistor and heat sink. That is why Elecraft
provided the thermo conductive pads. If heat sink compound is used the
screws will remain tight because there is no lingering cold flow properties
in the compound.

Hi David;

I can confirm your experience - and add a bit more.

I too had occasion to remove the KPA100 shield, and found he PA and driver
fixing screws I had tightened (but not overtightened!) quite loose.

I re-tightened them, but this time overdid it with one of the studs
tightened with an octagonal wrench, which twisted off. Fortunately a spare
had been included with the kit, and it was not too difficult to remove and
replace it.

I wonder if a spot of 'Locktite' (cyanoacrylite 'superglue') applied
during construction would be a good idea?

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA100 Issue

To All,

Though there is some mention about tightening the screws that mount the
final power transistors in the manual, it can be easily missed.

When I first built the KPA100 I made sure the transistor hear sink
mounting screws were tight. After operating the rig for about a week
(and heat cycling the heat sink) I had an opportunity to open up the K2
to show a friend. At that time something in my mind reminded me to
recheck the final transistor heat sink mounting screws (please remember
the screws were carefully tightened upon assembly) and to my surprise I
could easily tighten the screws 1/2 turn or more! It seems the heat
conducting material cold flows a bit between the final transistors and
the heat sink.
So for those who have a KPA100 it would be prudent to check those final
transistor heat sink mounting screws every so often. If you don't you
could lose your finals.

[Elecraft] Re RFC 15 miniature?

2007-01-01 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Bob,

I have just finished my K2 a few days ago and there is a lot I can relate to
your question about RFC15.

First and most important, these chokes are very fragile and can open up
quite easily just by flexing the leads too much.

Second I also found the size of these chokes from brown to green body is not
that much. I chose the brown body 100 mh choke to install as it was slightly
smaller.

To my demise I couldn't get the PLL circuit to work properly and after
calling Elecraft they brought my attention to both RFC15 and C88. When I
checked I found the choke open. I replaced the choke and the receiver worked
very well but I seem to have a PLL instability around 7180 KHZ. I was then
advised to remove RFC 15 and replace it with a wire and be sure C88's leads
were short. The problem was not solved. I inserted a ferrite bead on a wire
that took the place or RFC15 and replace C88 (60 pf) with a 100 pf capacitor
and the problem is gone.

It is my understanding that not all the K2's have this problem but several
must have because I got many replies concerning this problem.

Note: Before I started assembly of the K2, I checked all the chokes out with
a digital Ohm meter to verify they were not resistors. They all measured
very low resistance so the chokes were good before I mounted them.

Check to make sure RFC-15 is still a low resistance after you solder it in.
and check around 7175 to 7185 KHZ for instabilities in the VCO.

Good luck and have fun

Hi Folks,
I am building #5930 and I'm at the point of installing
C91, C88 and RFC 15 on the bottom of the rf board at U4. The manual talks
about a miniature 100 uH choke, much smaller than the other 100 uH chokes
and
with a tan body. I have 4 green bodied and one tan bodied 100 uH choke, but
the tan bodied one is pretty close to the
same size as the green ones, if any thing a little bigger. I have no
miniature chokes at all I'm sure I can

solder it to the indicated location, but is this something I should be
concerned about? Bernie W1AZ asked this same question on the list back in
Sept.

but I can't see where anyone answered him.

[Elecraft] KPA100 Standoffs between heat sink and board

2006-12-31 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Ben,

I just finished building my KPA100 and it is quite happy in the K2 at this
time. I agree with your observation of the milled out hole on the heat sink.
I tried placing a lock washer between the heat sink and standoff (against
Elecraft instructions) which resulted in not having the screws on the KPA100
rear panel match the hole resulting in having to remove the heat sink from
the KPA100 PCB and removing the lock washer. Afterwards the screw hole
aligned perfectly. I do believe the board is warped a little because of the
machine out portion of the heat sink but it seems necessary to match all the
mounting screw holes. Anyone else have any ideas.

By the way it seems surprising to me the amount of "missing" parts that
customers are ordering for replacement. I just built the K2 with the SSB
module, Noise blanker module, DSB module and KPA100 module. That calls for
a lot of parts and I got to say that Christene always gets all the parts.
In fact it seems that there is lots of extra hardware and wire in with the
kits. Many times I thought a part was messing only to find it after careful
looking.

I also have to agree with Elecraft on the alignment. If you take your time
and read the procedures carefully you can do a real good alignment. The
audio spectrum program that is offered really makes it easy to calibrate the
BFO frequencies. I have been working with electronics for more then 40 years
and I teach others to do the same. I cannot state enough to take your time
and follow the procedures and your K2 is spot on frequency

[Elecraft] Freq Memory

2006-12-18 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Bernie,
On My K2 (#5779) if I change frequency on the same band and wait for 10
seconds the K2 puts that new frequency in memory so when the rig is powered
off , then back on it returns to the frequency it was last on. If you
change the frequency within the same band and quickly power the rig off, it
will return to the original frequency before the change was made.

Example:

If the rig was at 3760 KHZ and I changed the frequency to 3770 KHZ and
waited 10 seconds before shutting the rig down it will return to 3770 KHZ
when powered up.

If you quickly powered off the rig after the Frequency change the rig will
be at 3760 KHZ when powered up.

Hope that clears up your question.

[Elecraft] Your website

2006-12-15 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Tom
Your website is great!! There is a wealth of information there and I have
just started to learn from it. I have just completed my K2 and am doing a
lot of learning and enjoying the rig a lot.

One thing I might comment on is the Spectrogram program you offer a link to.

Well I needed to align my ssb filter and after downloading the software I
could not get any audio from the rig to the application. The K2 audio was
getting into my computer and I could use MIXW to see and work PSK31
stations.

So I tried using the spectrum scope in MIXW and it did the job fine. I could
tweak the SSB filters for the best response using noise. I think Digipan
will also work. You have to be careful on how to interpret the frequency
markers but they are there.

Just thought I would pass this on

Thanks for a great source of information.

[Elecraft] Solvent

2006-12-15 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
I have been working in electronics for over 30 years and I find that though
rosin flux is somewhat inert under normal conditions it can lead to
corrosion in certain circumstances. On all my portions of the K2 system I
have built
I have removed the flux using alcohol or flux solvent. You have to be
careful about certain plastics that could be affected by various cleaner
solutions but most of today's components seem to resist any solvent damage
if the proper flux removing solvents are used.

Be careful as the solvents can be flammable and not the greatest thing to
breathe. Also be certain all the cleaner has been removed from the circuit
board before applying power.

I hope this information is of some help.

[Elecraft] Unstable VCO

2006-12-11 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

With stock construction (with C91, .001uf, C88, 68pf and RC15, 100uh choke
installed) I found instablity in the VCO from about 7175 to 7860 KHZ.
After contacting Elecraft I was told to remove RC15 and replace it with a
wire and shorten the leads of C88. The VCO instablity was still there.
After being advised to keep the leads short I cut any excess leads from all
the IC's that are in the VCO circuit. (Please note that all chips are
soldered in except the controller chip U1). this didn't help at all.
So I tried replacing the wire short where RFC 15 was, with a ferrite bead.
Now the instablity was only from 7800 to 7805 KHZ.
The next thing I tried was replacing C88 with a 100pf silver mica capacitor.
It is somewhar larger then the origonal capacitir but I managed to keep the
leads short. The VCO problem is now gone and the rig seems to work
flawlessly. I have been using it a lot on PSK and even had some ssb
contacts. I still got a lot to learn about the rig and the DSB module but
that will come with experiance. Thanks to all for your advice and
information.

Again, thanks to all,

[Elecraft] Problem With VCO Stablity

2006-12-10 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
When I operate my K2 between 7180 and 7190 Khz the VCO seems to worble or
becomes unstable. Any other band or frequency is fine. I have removed RFC15
and replaced it with a direct wire connection then later a ferrite bead.
C91's value was increased from .001 uf to .01 uf. c*88 is still 68pf but
with the advice of Elecraft Technical support I reduced the lead length of
this component to as short as possable. These changes seem to help reduce
the bandwidth of instablity but not totally eliminate it.

The rig works fine on all bands and puts out 10+ watts.
Any suggestions

[Elecraft] LCD Backing

2006-12-10 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Tom,

I just finished building my electaft and I agree with you about the LCD
display. On mine there was a very thin clear plastic film that was easy to
peel off but underneath the LCD module ewas a translucent plastic coating.
I attempted to peel it off but it was rwally glewed on so I stopped trying.
After i build the rig I found that the LCD lights up fine. It seems the
light gets into the LCD from the outside edges and not the back. Or there is
so much led light that it makes it through the translucent coating on the
back. If you don't fing the clear coating on the front don't worry as you
probely wount see it after it is mounted.
