Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Datamodes
You would need to connect the K3's PC IN and OUT lines to your computer soundcard and the RS-232 serial interface for freq/mode info and setting up the PTT/CW. I believe the only time you will need some other external interface would be for true FSK. The line for this is on the ACC connector and should be keyed via an open collector at less than 5 volts. 73 Greg AB7R On Tue, 5 Jun 2007 12:31:50 -0400 (EDT) Thom LaCosta [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So, the FAQ says The K3 has the features of most high-end sound card interfaces built in. Transformer-coupled line input is provided, for various digital modes or other external audio sources for transmit. The RS232 serial interface supports RTS and DTR inputs. These can be configured by use of a set up menu so either signal can be PTT, KEY or both. This meets the needs of most data mode and logging programs. We used RS232 to support users of still-popular DOS mode logging and other utility programs, as well as computers with legacy ports. Elecraft also sells a USB-to-RS232 cable that has been tested with the K3 to allow users of more modern computers complete access to the interface. Personally I like the idea of using an LCD screen for the display. It would cut down on production costs and the display would be nice and large. Don, I don't think the concern here is with S9 signals, but rather much stronger ones. Here is a clip from Erics article talking about roofing filters.. The TenTec Argo V will pump somewhat in the same scenario and pump very hard in a contest, at times swamping the receiver. It's a great radio for a quiet afternoon or contesting with modest antennas. The TS480Sat will pump dramatically and you need to leave the 500hz filter in line anytime there is an S9 signal within the 2.8khz ssb filter. Re: [Elecraft] OMNI VII vs Elecraft K3
Hi Anthony, This would be difficult to do since the K3 has not hit the streets yet. While the VII has an ethernet port for remote control, the K3 will have an extensive array of remote capabilities built into its updatable firmware. The K3 receiver specs should be vastly better than the VII, though official specs have not yet been released as final testing is not done yet. The K3 has full dual RX with both receivers being of the same quality / architecture. Not an inferior sub receiver as employed by some other dual rx radios. K3 has digital mode encode and decode ability without the need of an external computer. You can even send RTTY and PSK using your CW key! K3 has more choices of roofing filters and allows you to include only those accessories you want...saving you $$ on what you don't want. Due to the K3 modular design, in most cases if something were to go wrong and could be pinpointed to a specific board, you would likely only need to send that board in for repair/replacement. No need to send the entire radio risking shipping damage. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea. My best recommendation would be to go to the Elecraft website and review the FAQ and the spec sheet and compare that with what is available for the Omni VII. Then choose what is best for you. 73 and good luck, Greg AB7R On Mon, 14 May 2007 13:26:09 -0500 Anthony Rick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am a long time Ten Tec user interested in upgrading. Re: [Elecraft] OMNI VII vs Elecraft K3
Hi Bob, This is from the FAQ. Hope it answers your question. 73 Greg With a first IF of around 8 MHz, how can the receiver be general coverage? Will there not at least be hole in the coverage around the IF frequency? General does not mean continuous in this case. There is a small gap at 8.215 MHz. You may be able to tune to this frequency, or not, depending on the firmware. There is a trap circuit to suppress response at this frequency, so the receiver won't work very well within several kHz of 8.215 MHz if it does allow you to tune there. On Mon, 14 May 2007 14:03:30 -0700 Bob Nielsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On May 14, 2007, at 1:53 PM, Bill W5WVO wrote: Anthony, I spent a long time lurking on the OMNI-VII Yahoo group and was primed to buy one -- until the K3 was announced. In addition to everything Greg says below, I think the most significant single difference between the two receivers is that the OMNI-VII uses a typical up-conversion scheme for the first IF, with its narrow filters in the 2nd IF. The K3 uses a down-conversion scheme at the first IF. This allows use of very narrow roofing filters in the first IF, while the OMNI-VII must depend only upon optimizing IF stage gain distribution to minimize close-in IMD through the first IF. They obviously did a good job of that, as the 80 dB 2 kHz DR3 shows, but it is expected the K3 will test significantly higher than that, most likely in the vicinity of the ORION-II. Of course that's speculation at this point, since the actual numbers aren't out yet, but it is well-informed, highly credible speculation. :-) And you don't give away general-coverage receive capabilities, as you do with many ham-optimized down-conversion receivers. It is simply a brilliant design, IMO. I have one on order. Bill / W5WVO That lead to a question I hadn't considered before. How is general coverage in the vicinity of the first i.f. achieved? Re: [Elecraft] RE:MARS
Hi Lee, This is from the FAQ page. I don't think you will have anything to worry about. Will the K3 operate on MARS frequencies? The K3 may be operated outside the Amateur bands, but this capability is prevented by firmware. We have not yet worked out the mechanism, but we fully intend to support such operation, along with the Alaska Emergency frequency at 5.175 MHz. General coverage receive filters can be added to the main receiver and/or the subreceiver. This is the KBP3 option. The rig automatically selects the narrow ham-band filters when you're in the ham bands, and the wider filters when you're in-between ham bands. This option has no effect on ham-band performance and is extremely easy to install. Re: [Elecraft] RE:MARS
Found this in google... Typical MARS Frequencies, take a listen. - MARS Member stations meet periodically in scheduled networks on military frequencies outside of the amateur bands. There are various types of networks and each accomplishes a specific goal. For example, Administrative Networks to take care of much of the day-to-day management of the program. Traffic Networks which exist solely to pass third-party traffic, and of course, Emergency Networks which are established to provide communication needs during periods of emergency. There are also Technical Nets and Training Nets. - MARS nets operate in different modes. Many MARS nets meet between 4000 - 4050 Khz and 7300 - 7400 Khz. Generally network stations meet during the local mid-to-late-afternoon and/or early evening hours. You can identify NAVMARCORMARS Stations by their NNNØ prefix. Army MARS stations are identified by their AA (Alpha Alpha) prefixes, while Air Force MARS stations have the unique AF (Alpha Foxtrot) prefix. Thank you for stopping by. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Multiple Concurrent Filters?
Fred, Each receiver has 5 crystal IF filter slots. When shipped, a 2.7 kHz filter is included, leaving 4 more slots available. This includes the main receiver and the optional subreceiver as they are of the same design. These IF crystal filters are not mode dependent...meaning you can choose any filter for any mode. The filters installed on the main RX also share transmit duty as well. Filters on the optional subreceiver are ONLY for receive. The KBPF3 bandpass filter for improved general coverage receive does NOT take up one of the crystal IF slots and is only inline when you tune outside the ham bands. Once you are back inside the ham bands it is switched out and the ham specific BANDPASS filters are switched back in. Remember I'm talking bandpass filters and NOT the crystal IF roofing filters here. The roofing filters can be chosen in any mode and on any frequency and work in combination with the DSP IF and DSP AF filtering. Re: [Elecraft] Yes another K3 question..
Brett, I will post a detailed explanation on the FAQ this evening sometime. But for a short answer...The two bottom knobs are transmit controls and function based on current operating mode. The knobs function as the same tap and hold method as buttons. For example, the bottom left button will default to SPEED when in CW mode. If you HOLD it, it will then operate based on the label below the knob. So that same knob would then control the break-in delay when operating semi-break-in. The two controls on the top are receiver controls for filtering. The one on the top left you can TAP to toggle between SHIFT and LO-CUT. If you HOLD it, it normalizes the passband based on the selected IF Filter and DSP filter settings and zeros out any SHIFT. The button to the right operates the same way, but the HOLD function toggles the filter user configurations between I and II (see FAQ for more info on this). Thanks for asking and 73 Greg AB7R On Mon, 07 May 2007 14:17:03 -0400 Brett gazdzinski [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ok, I wont stop thinking about it till I get one, there is nothing to be done about it. On the knobs above, you also have normal and I/II. What do you mean by generating CW characters to copy by ear? Do you mean while in digital mode for PSK/RTTY? When sending digital modes via the CW keyer the feedback while sending is in CW. But you will also hear a lower level PSK/RTTY tone in the background to remind you the signal is transmitting as the appropriate digital mode. 73, Greg AB7R On Thu, 03 May 2007 08:34:00 -0700 Vic K2VCO [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Bill Tippett wrote: N6KR: The decoder also works for PSK31 and RTTY, and you can transmit in these modes just by sending CW with the keyer paddle I've never used digital before but I'll bet the digital community will be thanking you for all the expeditions they work once the K3 starts shipping. Re: [Elecraft] PROs/CONs on KPA100
There is a fan accessory from Ten Tec for the Orion that is mounted on a metal bracket. It fits very nicely onto the KPA100 heatsink and is pretty quiet. You can even put a resistor in the line and drop the voltage from 12V to 5-7 V to cut down the RPM and make it almost dead quiet while still providing additional cooling at the heatsink. Lets go even better for those who like to experimentYou can put together a simple but effective water cooling system such as what is used for computer CPUs. Cut away the fins on the heatsink above where the finals are and mount a waterblock to the heatsink above the finals. This will draw the heat to the liquid that goes to a small radiator for cooling. A small pump keeps the system circulating. This should keep the small fan from having to come on at all. While this is a spur of the moment idea.it seems like it should workand well enough that you should be able to run digital modes without reduced power. Has anyone tried something like this? If I remember correctly, the manual for the Sigma V says to run the coax away from the antenna at ~90degrees as much as possible to prevent coupling. I had one of these in the past and was always amazed at how well it performed for such a small antenna. It does *not* prevent imbalance caused by capacitive coupling between the outside of the line and one of the legs of the vertical dipole. It's still a good idea to try to reduce such coupling.
