[Elecraft] EC2 for sale in UK

2024-02-28 Thread Allan G Duncan
I have a new and unused Elecraft EC2 enclosure complete with the optional
ETS2 tilt stand to match the K2, all as new.

I believe that the EC2 empty enclosure kits are no longer available from
Elecraft.

The kit is unopened with original instruction documentation.

The original cost of these items was close to $95 + tax and delivery.

Unfortunately, I can only ship within the UK.

£45 + £4 postage within mainland UK.

Please contact me offline if interested gm4...@arrl.net

Thanks

Allan

[Elecraft] K3 with PX3 Panadapter

Has anyone tried using a PX3 with the K3 transceiver? Seems like running the
IF through an LP-PAN, and then connecting the I/Q output of the LP-PAN to the
PX3 would work.

I don't remember the slider ever moving in response to the fan speed while in

Folks,
Using the KPA1500 remote program. There is a slider control for the fan

different fan speeds, so the control is communication with the KPA1500.
I seem to remember when I first installed the remote software that the
slider position responded to the KPA1500’s automatic fan speed.  I could look
at the position of the slider and know (while wearing headphones) what the fan
speed was.  But that no longer seems to be working, and the blue slider remains
at the far left position even when the amp fans are running.  So I’m not quite
sure how this slider is supposed to work. If I set min fan speed in the KPA1500
menu to “1” the slider position will move to “1”  It just doesn’t move when the
fan is set to “auto” and comes on by itself.

[Elecraft] Clickable P3 Desktop Window

2022-01-17 Thread Ed G
Hello,
To follow up on a recent posting asking about the P3 video display as a
dedicated display within Windows, I have been testing one solution which gives
me a scalable, moveable P3 display. It is necessary to have the SVGA P3 option
installed. I use a small VGA to HDMI converter which then connects to an HDMI
video capture card.
1. VGA to HDMI converter
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078NVJVVB?psc=1=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
2. HDMI to USB video capture card
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088HBRM7T?psc=1=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
The video capture card was suggested by Max NG7M on the K4 users group as a way
to display the K4 spectrum within Windows, and it works well in this K3/P3
application.
The USB video from the capture card can be used as an input to the Windows
Camera app; the app also allows you to take snapshots or record video of the P3
video display. So now if I run the K3 remotely, and use one of the various
remote desktop-type programs to connect to the host computer, I can see the P3
display on the remote’s screen display.
A photo of the P3 display using the Windows camera app is here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mv4AuX5PVo3cGWz8cZY6KmlmyOct5wTn/view?usp=sharing
For those using WIN4K3, another useful option is to run the USB P3 video to the
P3 window within WIN4K3. Selecting a marker allows you to click on the spectrum
display to tune the K3. This pic shows what that looks like.

[Elecraft] P3 VGA Video Capture Card

2022-01-08 Thread Ed G
Hello,
I am investigating ways to be able to see P3 video when linking to a local
computer via a remote desktop type of program. The local computer would be
controlling a K3 using Win4K3 and I would like to also be able to see the P3
video. So I am considering a VGA capture card to allow the P3 video to be
displayed on the local monitor. One card I looked at:

https://www.amazon.com/Capture-Streaming-Teaching-Conference-Broadcasting/dp/B08GYXZC3D

Is anyone on the list doing something similar? Looking for comments and/or
suggestions; thanks!

Cold weather performance. (My winter FD LiFePO4 was reliable at -15C (5F),
unlike my Li-ion laptop.)

Low self-discharge.

Voltage compatibility with "12V" systems.

There are probably others.

Lately, I've been playing a lot with CW & QRP radios. Got a uBITX
"kit" from India. In quotes, because it was assembled and tested, you
just mount the boards in the case. Then a "QCX+" kit from Hungary -
this was a real kit, you solder in the parts.

I discovered that I *really* like electronic QSK ( aka full-breakin
CW ). The QCX+ does it really well. But it's only one band. I built
it for 40M, but during the day, the action is mostly on 20. The uBITX
is multi-band, but does not do QSK. What to do? I investigated
converting the uBITX to full-break, but that turns out to be a very big
deal. As in "Nobody's done that yet".

..So yesterday I pulled the trigger on an Elecraft K2 on Ebay. Waiting
with bated breath for that box in the mail.

It's an early serial number - 00845. It seems that a lot of changes
took place over the years - and Elecraft doesn't show a manual for it -
their download site only shows the manual for "Rev B" PC boards.

I see that they still have some parts and accessories for this unit
- and the SSB module is not too expensive.

The rig went back to Elecraft for evaluation and I was told with this type

I want to say that Elecraft made a modification to help with the strong

I still am evaluating if I want to keep this thing or put it up for sale.

Carlos...

The numerical values associated with the K2 filter settings are
approximations, used mostly for reference when adjusting the filters.
They do not indicate the "exact" filter bandwidths, etc.

Aligning the K2 filters is best accomplished following the instructions
on Don Wihelm's site, http://www.w3fpr.com/. Look at the bottom of the
main page for "K2 Filter Alignment." Don is an expert authority on the
K2, and his instructions are just about the standard for aligning the
filters.

Am I missing something in the settings? I get the digest emails. However they

assume this is because senders hit "reply to all" and do not bother to cut the
copy of everything out? Yet I see guys saying they can delete individual
messages that don't interest them like you can do with a groups.io list. What

[Elecraft] Re K4D real world user testing

2020-06-23 Thread Steven G. Steltzer
There's the news everyone has been waiting for. And may help K9TF keep from
over medicating in the future :-) K4D's in the hands of at least 2 very capable
contesters. They must be ready to start the production line as soon as Cali's
lockdown law expires. And great news about the APF filter, I hope that's
already implemented in the units they gave XI and TV.

I, for one, am anxious to see what they have to say after FD, when hopefully
the bands will be crowded with strong signals and they can generate some good
pileups.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Operation on 6 Meters

2020-06-16 Thread Ed G
So, summary question for the KPA1500 amp designers:

With 5 watts drive and the amp in STBY, the KPA1500 display reads the correct
1.3:1 SWR. When I switch the amp to OPER, SWR reads 2.5:1 with the same 5
watts drive. All hardware/cabling outside the KPA1500 remains the same for
each case. Reminder that this anomaly is seen only on 6 meters; other bands are
fine. BTW power out with 5 watts drive is about 150 watts, and internal
KPA1500 tuner is bypassed.

What is different inside the KPA1500 as to how the SWR is sensed and displayed
between STBY and OPER?

Ed,

Your dummy load choices at 1500 watts range from expensive and good (Bird) to
cheap and not-so-good. For example the MFJ-264 is listed as handling 1500 watts
but if you read the fine print (the derating curve printed on its case ) you're
limited to 8 seconds at 1500 watts. And each time you stress that dummy load
its resistor value climbs by a few ohms.

Frustrated with the commercial options available, I built a dummy load using a
huge heatsink from a salvage VHF transmitter and a series/parallel combination
of four 50 ohm 250 watt resistors purchased on eBay.

Not seeing that here. SWR value unchanged at 10, 20, 30, 35 watts of
drive. Suggest you test into a dummy load to see if the problem goes
away, which would suggest some issue with power level into the feedline

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Operation on 6 Meters

2020-06-16 Thread Ed G
This morning I put my DL2K dummy load right on the KPA1500 amp output (tried
both ANT1 and ANT2)…I am still seeing the same SWR anomaly, where lower drive
levels are giving high SWR readings on the KPA1500 display. By putting the
dummy load right at the KPA1500 output, I eliminated a bunch of coax cables and
switchboxes.

So at this point the issue appears to be one internal to the KPA1500. Also
appears to be not related to any previously-known high power RF causes, as in
my case the problem is there at low drive levels and goes away at maximum
drive/RF out. So I remain puzzled.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Operation on 6 Meters

2020-06-15 Thread Ed G
Folks,
I am trying to understand some odd KPA1500 operation on 6 meters. When
setting the power output of my K3 to give varying amounts of drive to the
KPA1500, I am seeing SWR as displayed on the KPA1500 changing by a significant
amount depending on the drive level. This is with the KPA1500 tuner bypassed.
An LP-100A on the output of the KPA1500 is also used and displays the correct
low SWR at all drive levels that I would expect to be seeing on the KPA1500
display.
For example, with 5 watts drive from the K3, I see 1.3 SWR on the LP-100,
and 2.5:1 on the KPA1500 display. As I increase drive, the KPA1500 SWR display
goes down proportionally, until I get to about 40 watts drive. At the 40 watt
drive level, I am seeing a nice healthy 1600 watts output, and both the LP-100
and the KPA1500 are showing the same 1.3 SWR. 15 watts drive shows 1.3 on the
LP100 and 2.0:1 on the KPA1500 display. So I am not sure why the SWR sensing
and display in the KPA1500 is behaving this way? I do not see this oddity on
any other bands.
I might also add that attempting to get the KPA1500 internal tuner to
bring down the high SWR as seen on the KPA1500 results in a drop in SWR
displayed on the KPA1500 to where SWR almost equals that on the LP-100, but
using the tuner I would expect that to be even better.

Re: [Elecraft] stripping insulation from enamel wires

Thanks for the many replies. I should have mentioned that the wire to be
stripped comes from Elecraft in the K2 antenna tuner kit. Elecraft
recommends the solder pot or the solder iron; they discourage using a
lighter/flame.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: The Colpitts mystery

2020-05-01 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft
I once spent 15+ years racing bicycles, officiating and promoting races.
During the same period lots of bikers tried their hand at building bike
frames. This required design, fabricating brazing jigs, and the actual
torch work. A few became known builders while most just gave it up as
too complex and demanding. All, I assume, continued to ride and race.
Moral of this story is that one doesn't need to know how to build a bike
frame from scratch in order to enjoy biking. Most racers [the 40+ wpm
contest folks...?] then and now couldn't tell you very much about bike
frames other than "fit, doesn't fit." Same with cars. My father used to
say that "back in the old days" you worked on your car all day Saturday
in order to take the family on a Sunday ride. Try that with today's
cars. So, perhaps the same goes with radio electronics and ham radio
builders and circuit designers. Once, you had to build your own to get
on the air. However, other than fun, does anyone here want to do a
contest on a crystal set? Probably not. The trade off seems to be
between simple and limited versus complex and limitless. The info is
there for those who have and/or develop a keen interest in electronics.
The rest can appreciate the wonder of it all while enjoying the "front
panel" of their radios in their daily QSO's. ...IMHO

[Elecraft] Special Bulletin- More Event Cancellations, ARRL Digital Editions off-line

off-line
To:

More iconic Northwestern Division event dominoes are falling as a result
of the COVID-19 pandemic. I received notification yesterday afternoon
that both the Pacific Northwest DX Convention, originally scheduled for
August 7th-9th, and the Stanwood-Camano ARC Hamfest, in Stanwood,
Washington, originally scheduled for May 9th, have both been canceled
for this year.

The Pacific Northwest DX Convention is scheduled to be hosted again by
the Willamette Valley DX Club in Portland, Oregon in August 2021. The
event normally rotates between 4 different host DX groups, and the 2021
event was originally to be hosted by the Idaho DX Association, in
conjunction with the Spokane DX Club. They will now host the event in
2022.

I also received notification this morning that the the digital editions
of QST and On the Air magazine are currently unavailable online. Access
to the publications via the iOS, Android, and Kindle apps is functioning
normally, however. Digital publisher PageSuite is working to resolve the
problem. The ARRL will update members when web access has been
restored.

[Elecraft] Special Bulletin: Sea-Pac and ARRL Northwestern Division Convention Canceled

Convention Canceled

I received the following notice regarding the cancellation of Sea-Pac
2020, (which also hosts our yearly ARRL Northwestern Division
Convention). While disappointing and painful, it's certainly the right
thing to do.

At this point in time the Pacific NW DX Convention scheduled for August
is still going on as planned. That said, stay tuned for further
developments.

I've received many requests for club Zoom meetings in the last few
weeks, so I'm certain most clubs are properly "social distancing"
themselves. Social distancing is vitally important in keeping the virus
in check, especially when so many amateurs fit the most vulnerable
demographic. Let's all hope that this virus pandemic blows over quickly
and we can get our lives back to normal!

Finally, there have been many questions brought to me by members as to
the status of the ARRL Volunteer Examiner program, and also questions as
to how the upcoming ARRL Field Day event will be affected. I'll deal
more with these questions in my next update, as I have a teleconference
with other members of the Board's Programs and Services committee
scheduled later this week.

The staff at ARRL HQ are adjusting to the "new normal" of working mostly
from home, (as are we all), so please be patient when attempting to
contact them regarding any issues.

SEA-PAC 2020 Cancellation Notice

For some time the SEA-PAC Executive Committee has monitored the
COVID-19 pandemic working closely with our local health, public and
government partners in assessing this unprecedented situation.

With approximately 60 days until the event, the Executive Committee has
made the decision to cancel the SEA-PAC convention for 2020. Convention
fees paid will be refunded.

This conclusion is based on the deadly seriousness of the virus, the
rate of expansion, and the recovery time after the crisis apex is
achieved. But more importantly, it is based on the genuine concern for
the health and safety of the attendees, vendors and presenters.

Details regarding this cancellation will be posted at www.seapac.org.

Thank you for your understanding and we are looking forward to the next
SEA-PAC on 4, 5, and 6 June 2021.

Hi all,

"We prefer to use Off Center Fed Dipoles (OCFD). They work for us because they
present a consistent, predictable mismatch on the frequencies we use. I made a few
small baluns out of binocular cores that are 4:1, which handle the output of the KX2
on Voice, CW and digital all day long. Typically the dipoles are strung up
arms-reach-high in the field, which gives us easy 300 - 400 mile range in our KX2
nets. If we're fortunate enough to have a tree, that OCFD with a center height at 10
to 15 feet or so works perfect for NVIS, at least for us.

"You'd be proud to know my KX2 has survived remote jungles, 14-er peaks in Colorado,
-30 degree F temps, a helicopter crash, and gunfights / IED blasts I think the
radio has held up better than I have."

He closed with:

Trivia ... The building's floor was / is patterned with hundreds of nails

Congratulations, Mark...

The K2 is a wonderful radio, all the way from bags of parts to your
first on-the-air QSO. IMHO, it is one the historic radios in the history
of amateur radio. You may own or someday buy a "state-of-the-art" radio

[Elecraft] Copying CW at high speeds

2019-12-30 Thread Ken G Kopp
See my QRZ page regarding my USC ... later NOAA ... shipboard
operation. Also "hung out" at WPD, RCA's shore station on the Tampa
waterfront. Op there was Al Andres (not a Ham).

Discussions of Morse copying skills are nowadays addressed to casual
amateur efforts where complete and accurate hard-copy output is seldom
required. Professional Morse skill was measured at the speed that the
operator produced complete and accurate hard-copy. An operator who head
copies at 50 wpm but hard copies at 15 wpm was a 15 wpm operator.

In the history of Morse for military and commercial service, the ONLY
valuable skill was producing accurate hard-copy of both plain language text
and code groups. The professional licenses for radiotelegraphy were the
Third Class, Second Class, and First Class Radiotelegraph certificates.
The Third and Second Class licenses required the following:

PLAIN LANGUAGE (including common punctuation) - 20 wpm - Receive and send
100 consecutive characters (1 minute) without error in a 500 character (5
minute) text.
CODE GROUPS (5-character groups of letters and numbers) - 16 wpm - Receive
and send 80 consecutive characters (1 minute) without error in a 400
character (5 minute) text.

Most candidates found that slow-speed code group receiving test to be the
most difficult part. (It took me three 200-mile trips to the Kansas City
FCC office to finally pass.) All those mental skills that allow an operator
to decipher entire words in plain language are of no help with code
groups...there's no process of "hearing code groups". There is also no
possibility of reviewing copied text and context for needed obvious
corrections. Although it's not required for 16 wpm, operators skilled at
high speed code groups develop an automatic "unthinking" response to
actuate keys on the mill/keyboard as characters are heard.

The era of the professional commercial Morse operator essentially ended in
July 1999 when maritime Morse operation ceased in the US. In the same era
the US military banned use of Morse, even going so far as eliminating it
from MARS repeater IDs.

It was a great era with great operators. A dear friend of mine (Al, W5KGM)
was a professional Morse operator for airlines and in WWII Atlantic
merchant ship convoys from 1937 to the 1970s. He could do do everything
commercial-quality at 60-wpm or better. He became a silent key at age 102
last year...there aren't many such "real" Morse professionals left.

It's unfortunate that the ham bands have been since 1999 the only place
that Morse radiotelegraphy may be heard for practice. Before that, the
marine Morse bands (especially 400 to 520 kHz) provided far more
interesting copy for development of Morse reception skill. (I usually kept
a receiver on 500 kHz/600 meters at night.) Morse skill was also
reinforced (at least for a while) in the Cold War for radiomen in my
squadron of ballistic missile submarines on the logical consideration that
if world events ever provoked missile launch, it was unlikely that normal
sophisticated submarine communications networks would exist afterwards.

But today...Morse is only a hobbyist's or historian's undertaking. I
personally found practice at Morse reception to be far more rewarding
outside the ham bands...but that option no longer exists.

I am curious about which "... things do occur..." that help along the
QRQ way.

Thanks for your interesting thoughts.

My point ? At QRQ CW speeds something occurs that you normally do not encounter
at slower speeds. Look at a dictionary. Many words start with a common
pattern. After 5 or 6 letters there are alternatives. At QRQ speed Your brain
is actually ahead of what your ear is feeding your brain. It is giving you a
choice of words to choose from.

The task is to choose the correct one. You are aided in that choice by the
context of the message. I don’t know why this occurs. But it does.

So when you learn to copy Entire words rather than letters ; this is the
phenomenon that occurs at high speeds. It helps but it can also throw you a
curve ball. That is where message context enters the equation.

When you copy entire words rather than all the letters you have assistance.
Your ability to copy faster speeds will improve with time. I only mention this
as things get better the longer you stay with it.

It is called getting over the hump. Or through the walk.

It usually appears more difficult to increase your speed. However things do
occur that help you achieve the ability to copy entire words. Then QRQ CW
becomes conversational. Kind of like auto fill with computer typing.

[Elecraft] More about copying code ...

2019-12-26 Thread Ken G Kopp
If one is "good" at code it's like knowing a second language. Copying in a
"pileup" is like following a particular conversation in a room full of
chattering people.

Many do better ... are faster ... at copying using longhand, finding it's
faster than printing, but this is more related to writing / printing skills
that have nothing to do with code copying skill.

FWIW ...

Trivia: There are 50+ "Kopp" hams.

[Elecraft] Elecraft's market

2019-12-23 Thread Steven G. Steltzer
I understand that CW ops are not the largest part of the market, but there are
still a very significant number of us, especially world wide. Just tune across
the bands on a major CW contest weekend. As long as Elecraft continues to make
CW as important as SSB and digital modes in their design philosophy, in
contrast to other manufacturers who are still using mechanical relays for T/R
switching for example, they will continue to own the lion's share of that
segment.

Thanks Wayne, Eric, and all for the great QRQ/QSK equipment.

Merry Christmas!

Re: [Elecraft] Reaching Across the Chronological Divide

2019-12-22 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft
ng at the end, and often weeks or months later.?
Video games require different but otherwise comparable proficiency
(both mental and physical) but involve real time counter moves to any
opponent. The closest we hams come to offsetting somebody we view as
competition is to steal their frequency or QRM them.? I'm not at all
suggesting that we do any such thing, but a contest where we could
take some action that subtracted from somebody else's score is the
kind of thing I'm talking about.? And no, I don't know how to do that
either, but it illustrates what I'm talking about.

It's not any surprise to me that contesting is one of the few
surviving ham radio activities with high participation.? Even
ragchewing has practically died out, and if anyone disputes that take
a look at how much time you spend each week reading email reflectors
versus being on the air (other than in a contest).

I'm not really sure what Wayne was referring to here, and maybe he
implied that same thing that I'm saying, but we aren't going to bring
young folks into the hobby by trying to convince them that the same
things that appealed to us 40 years ago are going to appeal to them.?
This isn't a communication or publicity problem. In spite of the
comments from hams I've seen over the years, most young people pretty
much know the general framework of ham radio and they've simply
rejected it in favor of other things.? There are always a few
exceptions, of course, but I'd bet $100 that the bulk of those young
people who pop up online or in QST as shining examples of young blood
in the hobby are nowhere to be found two years later.

If for any reason we want young folks to embrace the hobby, the hobby
itself is going to have to adapt.? That most of us seem unable to
understand that fact is probably another facet of the problem ...
we're old and inflexible (in both appearance and in fact), which
doesn't help the image of the hobby one wit.? The pictures from Dayton
or any other hamfest have the same appeal as if they were taken at a
Lawrence Welk concert.

I guarantee that those of us who are still above ground five years
from now will be having this same discussion, and it won't be because
we weren't persuasive enough.

73,
Dave?? AB7E

Mike...

I have this connection working. However, I use a microHAM CW interface
between the radio and computer with its router software [sets up virtual
ports and WinKey functionality] . This setup works cleanly and reliably.
I'm no expert in this area, but my reading here on the list prompts me
to say that a direct computer-to-radio setup for the K2 may not be
possible. I'm sure others with expertise will help you out.

N1MM Logger now follows the radio band and correctly logs the contact.
However, I cannot send CW from N1MM Logger to the K2. I get the following
error message at the bottom of the Entry window: "Unable to send this CW

The user manual for N1MM Logger makes this comment: "N1MM Logger does not

So I am confused as to whether or not it is even possible to set this up.
Has anyone been able to do this? Any help is appreciated, and thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide

2019-12-14 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft
I have read with interest the various postings on this thread. To pick
one out, Dave AB7E's analysis is, IMHO, spot on. As times roll on,
various aspects of cultural life change, also. "New technologies" of
whatever form will naturally catch the general interest, while old ones
will diminish to the status of niche interests for the few. Young people
generally are at the leading edge of taking up the new, while old folks
hold on to the trailing edge of the old for all the usual reasons. I had
an MG-TD with a broken starter in my youth; I crank started it for a
year. Many funny stories, lots of fun, and some skill acquisition [pull
up, don't push down]. But, I don't think that those "positives" which I
fondly remember would prompt many young people to adapt a crank-start car.

My father was interested in many things. He taught me to make black
powder, and I blew the front off the kitchen stove [long story]. He
would draw one-tube radio schematics on the back of paper napkins.
Interesting for me for the novelty and for my father's interest. He/we
bought an AM 3-tube radio from an electronics store in Washington DC
which we built together. That was fun, although I don't remember using
it much. When I started in ham radio at age 16, I followed the lead of a
ham friend who got me started with code, and a big time DX operator who
was an engineer at the weather bureau technical labs who owned a Collins
75A-4 and had built himself a 3-el 40m yagi [came down in the first big
winter storm]. I bought a Heathkit DX-20 and a used National NC-98, a
total investment of under $100. The antenna was a single wire that ran
under the window and out to a back yard fence [length 30ft, hgt 15ft]. I
actually worked some people! I learned CW for the simple reason that it
was the only mode that I could afford. I majored in EE in college and
spent 10 years in that line of work. And so on...

When I got back into ham radio in 1989 at the age of 49y/o, several
things were different. I had money to buy decent equipment. I owned my
own home which made antenna construction MUCH easier. I had an adult's
sensibility about technical stuff. I found CW interesting as a "second
language." "Communicating" was not the goal but rather the proof that I
had successfully mastered various technical challenges. Tinkering with
antennas [the quad went up and down regularly] and computer modeling of
same was interesting. The QSO/communicating was not primary but, again,
the proof that I had solved some antenna problem. Hunting DX and
contesting became my central focus, again as proofs that I had the
station set up as best as circumstances allowed and that my operating
skill set was up to the challenge.

My take away from all this is that unique factors in my life have
prompted and supported my interest in ham radio. I don't think that
"fun" has ever been the primary motivation - although I do enjoy a good
run in the CQWW-CW. The learning and acquisition curve in the hobby has
always matched my resources at any one time. Today, the cost and
complexity of the hobby is pretty steep. Given the difficulty in getting
young people involved in STEM interests and studies, the idiot-proof
nature of the consumer digital world, the low value placed on hardware
curiosity and tinkering [nothing is fixed, just replaced], and the
cultural focus on immediate gratification, is it so surprising that ham
radio is a difficult sell?

All IMHO.

...robert

harness action at a distance.

Most of us still feel that spark, occasionally--some on a daily

their DNA has not. Somewhere, nestled between the genetic codes for half-pipe

Is there a Battle Royale for ham radio? A tactical RPG?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3S] Side tone, SPOT discrepancy

2019-10-21 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft
Thanks for the replies. No, CW is not in REV, and radio is not under
computer control [though it is hooked to the computer for N1MM and
LPan]. But, the strangeness occurs regardless of side tone pitch, band,
filter width, filter center, and whatever. I can just ignore the
selected pitch so long as the actually operating pitch is acceptable and
tunes right. But... that's an itchy way to do things, and I'd like it to
be "right."

Re: [Elecraft] Radio clocks, internet and security!

2019-10-19 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft
I follow those who counsel and implement "caution" with all the
modern/current internet connections and digital wonders. Just because
something is possible doesn't mean it's wise. I have had one - yes, one
- virus infection in 34 years of being online with minimal firewall and
virus protection. I attribute this to strict caution in opening,
responding, and searching internet content of any and all kinds. There's
a Supreme Court maxim about not taking any and all cases that I think
applies here: "Resist the entering wedge."

Chuck and all,

I certainly don't. In the case of the KX3 it is used to time the charging of
the internal batteries - good use.

I can see a ham without a watch or cell phone to want the rig to display the
time for logging, but for me, my good old Timex on my wrist tells me what time
to log. The clock in my KX3 is more difficult to access than simply glancing
at my wrist!

I have never even set the clock in my K3 or KX3! Nor do I feel a need to do so.

As far as the K4 Linux software/firmware being internet connected, I have my
reservations about that. I have enough stuff connected to the internet, and
someone will have to demonstrate the benefit of my ham radio being connected to
the internet in addition to my computers.

If connection of the K4 to the internet is to be done, I have concerns about
security and personal privacy. Even Linux is subject to bad stuff from the
internet - it is not entirely secure, it is just that the number of users is
small compared to other OS versions and hackers just do not bother for most
cases.

When my refrigerator or microwave begins to listen in to my conversations, I
begin to worry about the BIG Brother consequences.

BTW, I do not have an Alexa or Siri device for those security reasons. I can
easily use a switch on the wall to operate a light switch and it is secure. I
can turn on my home theater or my computer AV application when I want to hear
music or view videos.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like to have control of my environment. The
Internet Of Things seems to be fraught with exposures and dangers that I am not
willing to accept.

Check the voltage at KPA100 U1 pins 11 and 12. Then set the K2

LO-HI, then Fan HI with subsequent taps.

With FAN NOR and the KPA100 quite cool, both U1 pins 11 and 12 should be
at 12 volts. With FAN LO-HI, U1 pin 12 should go to near zero volts and
the fan should run at low speed. Pin 11 voltage will drop a bit, but
should be higher than 5 volts.
With FAN HI, the voltage at pin 11 should drop to near zero and the fan
should go to high speed.

Now if the fan did not start at the LO speed, put a resistor in parallel
with R31 - I would suggest starting with 1k and then going to a lower
value if it still does not start. Some fans need a bit more current to
start.

After all that, put the fan back to NOR and then let the KPA100 and K2
return to room temperature with no power on (about 1/2 hour). Measure
your room temperature and convert to degC if your thermometer does not
have a C scale. Turn the K2 on and do CAL PA TEMP - set the value at
your room temperature in degC.

[Elecraft] (K3S) PA temp/calibrate problem

I have K3S #11832 factory assembled/tested.
Came home, worked well for several month plus and now this...
On start, I get error message PA1. When checking the
it indicates 57C upon a cold start. When trying to calibrate the PA
temp, the available adjustment range varies between 57C to 97C which
doesn't seem right by any understanding. The front panel temp is around
25C which I take to be correct. Also, I cannot get the cooling fans to
run with any setting of CONFIG switches or radio conditions. I've read
every manual that I have but cannot find anything that points me in the
right direction. Any and all suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] DXE Clifton Labs Z10000 Buffer Amp

Don...

I got one of the original Clifton Lab boards and installed it in my K2
[after you had serviced the unit]. Installation required a choice of
pick off points: right after the first mixer, and somewhere else a bit
more isolated [don't have the instructions before me]. I chose the
first. It works very well although the LO leakage is significant and
results in a pretty big birdie on the pan display. This is not really a
problem. That said, do you have any experience with this item using the
more isolated pick off? If so, does the isolated pick off eliminate the
birdie from the display? Thanks for your comments.

[Elecraft] KDVR3 - Some Website Confusion

2019-08-05 Thread Ed G
Folks,
When I go to the Elecraft site and search on KDVR3, I see the digital
recorder board come up for $169. If I search on E850246 (which is the DVR
board assy number), I am shown a K3DVR PCB for $365. If this is not a mistake,
what’s the difference between these two boards?

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 and 3080 Mod Kit Question

2019-07-31 Thread Ed G
Hi Don,
Well, that’s the answer. Except that I have not done any previous tuning
or listening on the 30 meter band; this is a new 3080 mod installation. But
for some reason the frequency in memory was 12. I’ve tuned down a bit and now
am seeing 10 MHz when I hit the band switch. Thanks!

Ed,

With the KX1 having general coverage receive capability, is it possible
that you have at some point or another dialed the VFO to a 12 MHz segment?

Try just dialing it to the 30 meter band and see what happens.

[Elecraft] KX1 and 3080 Mod Kit Question

Hello,
Just finished installing the 3080 mod kit for my KX1. All functions of
the KX1 appear to operate ok except that when I change bands I see “12” for 30

[Elecraft] The ability to send screen shots

Subject: [Elecraft] The ability to send screen shots
To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net

Hi All

This message is to the administrators of this reflector.

Might it be possible to have the ability to have small images, such as
screen shots to be able to be passed via the reflector?

They can be an amazing teaching and learning tool to help others see what
is being discussed.

In decades passed, this feature was turned off due to dial up modems and
the images may have been a vehicle for virus payloads. Of course, dial up
modems are long gone for 99% of the people and a properly patched computer
will not now allow a program to run from an image.

Most, if not all other reflectors allow for this feature to be available.

Many thanks in advance for this consideration.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S subreceiver sound "problem"

2019-07-01 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft

Thanks for the suggestions.
The subreceiver is on MAIN.
I set the selectivity for about 2kx in both receivers so that they are
both using the basic SSB filters, ie no 400cps filter in the sub-. I
re-checked all signal processing switches [ie, NR, NB, ATN, etc] to make
sure they were the same. I set both receivers to the same frequency,
both band noise and signals. I checked the rcv equalization; I don't
think that the two receivers can be set up with different profiles, at
least I couldn't do it. I turned off my hearing aids [the audio
parameters of my hearing in both ears are pretty closely matched]. So,
slightly better suggesting that some of the dullness was mismatched
setup. However, the sub- is still duller than the main. It's like the
there's a high freq cut on the sub-. In some respects it sounds like
there's some audio distortion through the sub- that's not there in the
main. That's it for the moment.

I recently purchased an Elecraft assembled and tested K3S with a

following filters: 2.8, 1.9, 500 & 200. When I listen to both receivers
through good quality headphones, the subreceiver sounds muffled, dull,
maybe a bit less volume when the gain and audio settings are identical,
all the while the main receiver is crisp and clear. Reversing the head
phones reverses the effect which, I think, rules out my hearing and
hearing aids. Reversing things with the A/B switch makes the left
channel muffled and dull. I've tried a whole lot of different setup
parameters, read the manual and Cady's book carefully, but I can't come
up with anything the brightens up the subreceiver. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Such offensive behavior is an age-old ploy to maintain a clear frequency,
especially when the operator's call is hidden by the use of a club / seldom
