Someone help me out here and give me a link to “the list.” I know it is

This is something that has always puzzled me, Alan. I agree that -3dB is
half the power (in watts), but S-meter calibration is related to
(micro)voltage. It is often assumed that doubling ones power increases
the signal at the receiving end by one S-point. But what is the
technical explanation of this?

[Elecraft] Using KXV3B preamp with K144XV

[Elecraft] KX3 End plates, cover and heatsink

2014-12-17 Thread David G4DMP
I have just received the controversial KX3 heatsink, end plates and
Perspex (Plexiglas) cover from an eBay advertiser purporting to be in
China. I realise there have been derogatory comments on here about this
seller's product, but nevertheless I would like to tell you about it.

The black finish and lettering match perfectly to the KX3 itself and the
Perspex cover is strong and fits well. The heatsink also fits perfectly.
All pieces are fixed using the existing KX3 screws. A small pack of
thermal compound is also supplied with a plastic application tool. To
sum up, I have no complaints whatsoever.

And now the best bit... The whole lot cost me 68.88ukp with free
shipping. (I see they are currently being sold at 65.44ukp.) The package
was evidently dispatched from Belgium. Consequently, as a country in the
European Community there were no customs, VAT or administration charges
to pay.

Yes, I would have liked to have bought these from the original USA
developers. But the additional customs charges and shipping costs to
Great Britain would have been prohibitive.

So, anyone in the UK or Europe, go for it. You will not be disappointed.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 vs. K3 (IF for XV144)

In a recent message, "7...@comhem.se" <7...@comhem.se> writes
>Does anyone have compare KX3 vs. K3 on 2m with XV-144?
>
>Pros/ cons on either combo?

Yes, Samir, I have used both. I like the KX3 and its internal 2m option.
The receiver is very sensitive and as it uses a 50MHz i.f. it covers the
whole of the 2m band (up to 148MHz) comfortably. However, the main
drawback is that the power output on 2m is only about 3.5W and somewhat
less when using internal batteries.

When using the K3 and XV144 combination, with an i.f. of 28MHz the
bandwidth is limited so it can only be used up to 146MHz. The power
output is up to 20W SSB and CW or half that power on AM/FM and data
modes. One answer is to install the K144XV which switches crystals for
144-146 and 146-148MHz. However, the power is limited to around 10W on
any mode.

Hence, all three systems have their pros and cons. I hope that helps.
Doubtless others will comment.

I agree wholeheartedly with you there, Ian. It does seem that when a
new product comes out, existing products take a back seat and cease to
be updated. Let's hope that no new products are released before the K3,
KX3, etc have been attended to.

The KX3 has some features that the K3 ought to have. To cite another
example, DTMF keying in FM mode is available on the KX3, but when I use
my K3 to access international repeaters on 2m I need to use a cumbersome
external key pad held close to the microphone. We are told that this is

So, my suggestion for small enhancement is a band-edge beeper.

This has been discussed many times, Alan; look back though the archives
and you will find them. The problem is that we don't all share the same
band edges. 160m, 80m, 60, 40m, 2m, among others in the UK are different
from those in the USA. If we had the USA band edges we would certainly
have the risk of operating outside our bands.

Surely, with the clear display of the K3 and a copy of our licence
document by our side, most of us have sufficient nous to keep within our
bands. Eventually, you will learn what the band edges are.

Re: [Elecraft] K3EXREF Query

2014-10-14 Thread David G4DMP
I have not seen any replies to this, Brian.

As I see it, the only way out is to go into REF CAL from the Config menu
and then press 2 to disable XREF until the frequency standard has
locked.

Like you, I have found that if XREF is enabled when the K3 is switched
on, the K3 drifts unacceptably for 15 minutes until the frequency
standard has settled down.

No, Sverre, I did not need an adjustable 5V control voltage as the MV89A
was spot on 10,000,000.00 Hz as measured on my Rubidium controlled
frequency counter. I merely applied a regulated 12V supply to it.
Obviously I cannot speak for all MV89A units but I guess they are all

Go for it, Dave, it works very well. I have used a Racal-Dana 9475
Rubidium standard (perfectly safe!) and also a GPS disciplined 10MHz
standard, but recently got a 10MHz MV89 double oven CXO which is
inexpensive and excellent. Mine is accurate to the nearest one-hundredth
of a Hertz at 10MHz, which is near enough for me ;-) Search eBay for
MV89 and MV89A. I built mine into a box with its own 12V, 2A regulated
linear PSU. After warm-up it draws just 9W from the supply mains.

One must remember, James, that Elecraft is a business, and a very
successful business it is too. Although the help and customer support is
beyond compare, the company is in business to make a profit.

It is understandable that concentration is given by providing support
and development for the latest product, earlier products taking a back
seat.

There are several features available on the KX3 which the K3 does not
have. One such feature is DTMF tone support for internet linking which
was introduced on the KX3 with MCU 1.73 last November but is not
available on the K3 despite the K3 being the stalwart desktop rig. My
guess is that the K3 is unlikely to ever have that feature. I have come
to terms with that and have ordered the 2m transverter for the KX3. My
only hope is that the KX3-2M option will be available for my vacation in
September. I am encouraged by the statement that "New Orders to start
shipping by end of September" which suggests that back orders will be
shipped before then. Fingers crossed.

Re: [Elecraft] Quick survey: Need a 0-dBm transverter interface module for the KX3? (KXXV3)

2014-05-13 Thread David G4DMP
No thank you, David, this is something about which I have no interest.
The K2 and K3 are adequately equipped for transverter functionality. I
use an XV144 with my K2 and the XV70 with my K3.

The KX3 is a truly portable rig and I feel its reputation as such is
jeopardised by lots of external add-on. I do feel that people requiring
external amplifiers, panadapters, transverters, etc would be better
served by a K3. Let our friends at Elecraft not spend valuable
development resources on something which will have marginal appeal.

Re: [Elecraft] Quick Question

2014-04-07 Thread David G4DMP
It would be easiest to use one's skill and send this using a paddle.
Ideally the signal strength should be derived from the receiver's
S-meter. RST599 at my QTH is the very much the exception than the rule.

It should not be beyond the bounds of possibility these days,
electronically to compute Readability, Strength and Tone. Maybe the K4
will do this ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Power Supply Recommendations

2014-03-03 Thread David G4DMP
Ron - If something similar to this is available in the USA, I would
recommend this...

http://www.rapidonline.com/Electrical-Power/36W-Volt-Adjustable-Multi-Output-PSU-85-2908

I used one of these with my KX3 during a recent visit to Florida. It
operates from 100 to 240V input and is supplied with a range of output
connectors. By the use of fixed resistors plugged into its side, output
voltages from 5 to 24V can be obtained. I used it with the 14V resistor
and this provided adequate current to drive the KX3 to full power.
Spurious radiation from the PSU was found to be minimal.

David

In a recent message, Ron Bell writes

I am looking for a small/light weight 12v (110/220v) switching power supply
for my KX3, rated for 3amps or more to take with me on the road.

Any recommendations? More concerned with reliability and that it's quiet
than I am cost.

Not yet, Stan, but I understood Wayne to say that this feature could be
added in a future K3 firmware upgrade. Like you, I require DTMF tones
to access repeaters. Currently I am getting by using a small portable

2013-09-28 Thread David G4DMP
I had the privilege of attending Eric's excellent presentation on the
KX3, etc, at the National Hamfest today. It was very well attended, the
entire lecture room being filled and people standing at the back. It was
good to hear first hand about the development of the KX3 from its early
beginnings to final production and beyond.

I note that several people were 'filming' the proceedings on their cell
phones. Doubtless some of these will appear on Youtube in due course.

Good work Eric.

Re: [Elecraft] LCD display of K2 changing in LED display

2013-05-08 Thread David G4DMP
Hello Jean -
The problem with an LED display is that it takes much more current than
an LCD. When operating portable from batteries the total current is an
important factor. With the LCD display in the K2 there is an option to
turn off the backlight to reduce the current even more.

The early calculators used an LED display but they ran the batteries
down very quickly which is why they almost all now use LCD.

Do order a K2, Jean. It is an excellent rig and you will find the LCD
display very clear indeed. You will have much fun building it.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 kit suggestions?

2013-05-04 Thread David G4DMP
One thing I would recommend, Jim, is to get the K1BKLTKIT-X for your K1
at $29.95. This is the LCD backlight kit for your unbuilt K1. You can
add the backlight later if you want, but it would be more difficult and
will cost you an extra $10.

You will enjoy your K1; it's an excellent little rig.

[Elecraft] KX3 internal microphone

2013-05-02 Thread David G4DMP
Had any thought been given to including an internal electret microphone
in the KX3? Those mics are so small and an aperture for it could be
very tiny that I am surprised the KX3 does not have one. The internal
mic could be selected by a menu option. With the attachable KXPD3 paddle
the KX3 would then be a self-contained rig for all modes without the
need for an external microphone. An internal microphone would work very
well using VOX.

I would favour building my own, Ralph. There are no 'benefits' in
factory built other than it costing more and not providing the
experience and confidence of making adjustments as and when required.
The assembly and operator manuals are such as to make self-assembly and
calibration so simple.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Mic input problem

[Elecraft] K2 - Fixed AF Output PCB mod

2013-02-27 Thread David G4DMP
Just a word or caution to anyone fitting the Fixed AF Output mod to the
K2. If you have a K2 with a Rev A board, it will be necessary to carry
out the AF Gain control wiring modification. Otherwise you will find
that adjusting the AF Gain control does in fact vary the 'fixed' audio
output. This modification was standard on Rev B board fitted to K2s with
serial numbers 3000 and above.

I can't find the PDF on the Elecraft website, but it's here if anyone
wants it.

[Elecraft] [K3] Using DTFM microphones

I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has had success in using

I am attempting to use either of these on the K3/K144XV to send DTFM
tones on 2m to access my local internet linked repeater.

Although both of these mics have an RJ45 8-pin modular plug, I have
fitted an 8-pin plug to fit the K3 with the assistance of the
information on the G4WPW website. The microphone audio works OK and the
keypads illuminate with the +8V applied, but I cannot get the tones to
work.

Any help and experience of others would be most welcome.

Re: [Elecraft] My in-progress K1 is ALIVE!!!

2013-01-29 Thread David G4DMP
Congrats, Paul, on getting your K1 working. The K1 is a great little rig
and you are sure to have lots of enjoyment with it.

I made mine many years ago (SN No. 01117) and can't remember whether or
not I had any problem with L1. The only decision I recall was which
capacitor to use for the tuning range. I opted for the one to provide
the widest band coverage. I did change the encoder to a better one as
the one provided with early K1s was a bit noisy mechanically. Also I
carried out the mod to provide a back lit display which was not standard
at the time.

Have fun!

Power down your P3 and then power up again, Craig. Then it worked for

I got another error after the SVGA file that asked me to set the speed

far down the wish-list is SSTV ? This would be particularly useful now

[Elecraft] K3: Owner's Manual

2012-11-20 Thread David G4DMP
I think it is high time I printed off the latest K3 Owner's Manual as
the one I have is Rev D2, 1-1-2009 and is obviously out of date. Before

or is there a later version imminent?

Also, am I correct in assuming that Rev 10 is correct up to MCU 4.42

the hfwnotes.rtf file as an addendum to the Owner's Manual.

It would put the cost up, Gary. I understand that USB is like Dolby in

have to pay a premium. This expense would consequently be passed to the
customer. RS232 or its 9-pin equivalent is so much simpler.

Gary - we are told that there is new K3 beta software due for release

Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter

2012-10-21 Thread David G4DMP
The XV144 works very well with the K3, Dave, and you don't need anything
else, not even the KXV3A which is necessary for the internal K44XV
transverter. The K3 with its stock 2.7 kHz filter is fine unless you
wish to use FM in which case you would need the KFL3B-FM 13 kHz filter.

I do not know how you would use CW via a repeater. We do not have CW
repeaters here in the UK.

I see there is someone currently selling a XV144 in the UK for 200ukp
which is a very good price.
