Re: [Elecraft] K3 "blur" was a no-show during ARRL 10m
The words "blur" and "mush" are confusing to me. The effect I heard whilst running on 80m during CQWW (CW) 2010 was the following: A very slight raise in the noise floor then a random partial letter a few seconds later. If this is what is meant by "blur" and "mush" then I have noticed the effect. I was running and had just finished my last CQ call (I was considering a QSY) when I first noticed it. I decided to call CQ again and noticed the same effect again. The penny finally dropped that the slight rise in noise floor was actually a pile-up of similar strength stations calling me (all S5, with S4 noise floor). To test my theory I sent back 2 letters which clearly appeared on their own 2 or 3 seconds after my last CQ call and low and behold a single US station came back Q5. I worked another 10 or so stations in exactly the same way until the effect disappeared as did the pile-up (probably all pretty hacked off with how slow I was working through them). I later discovered I had been spotted by KC1XX. The reason for the random partial letter a few seconds after your CQ call, is that the pile up seems to "*disappear*" until only the last few callers are still calling. Usually these stations have the longest callsign or sent their callsign twice. The difficult thing about this effect is that first you have to realise what is going on. If you are calling CQ with hardly any gap between each call, you will not know the effect has taken place (you may be unaware a pile up is there until it has thinned out), as tail end callers will only become apparent when you are transmitting again. You have to pause between CQ calls (much longer than usual) before you get the hint of what is going on. Not wanting to have to pause long enough between every CQ call to catch this effect again, I haven't noticed it recently (ignorance is bliss). 73 Doug MM3T -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-blur-was-a-no-show-during-ARRL-10m-tp7087044p7101115.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)
Hi Roger, Many thanks for the response, it certainly is very frustrating. I have the Crystal Oven option installed, so would have to take things apart to see the crystal markings. In the manual it says: Y1 Crystal, 116 MHz 5th Overtone Series Resonant (116.000) Did the ones Elecraft sent you have (116.000) stamped on them? (144MHz input = 116MHz LO + 28MHz IF) Was it the accuracy of the Elecraft crystal parts that was questionable, or were the markings/parts wrong? Hopefully Elecraft will check their crystals for the XV144 and comment before I need to start taking things apart. Hi Eric/Matt, I am using the XV144 not the internal K144XV. For reference source I am using a beacon and several other local sources (not mine) so definately not my finger problems. Other than the 12.5KHz offset problem all seems well (as far as I can tell) : alignment, comms with K3, ptt, sensitivity, tx audio, power output etc, etc. I have spent the afternoon re-checking component values but haven't found any mistakes yet. [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)
Seasons Greetings, Just finished building my Xmas present (XV144). Initial trials show an offset frequency of +12.5KHz is required to put it on frequency. Unfortunately the K3 XV1 OFS menu only goes up to +9.99KHz leaving the frequency readout 2.51KHz low. I have re-read the manual, but there doesn't seem to be any other method for the additional required offset? Is it normal for the XV144 to require such a large offset? My frequency references are not exact (IC275E, GB3ANG Beacon and several local amateurs). I don't need any high degree of accuracy but ball-park +/- 300Hz would be nice. Any help would be welcome. [Elecraft] [K3] ARRL DX CW and NR problem
Had a blast as MM3T in ARRL DX CW, thanks to all Elecrafters that worked me. I noticed an odd effect when NR F1-1 was engaged, just after unkeying it sounded almost like when your ears pop with altitude. A moment of deafness then pop, and it all comes clear again. Anyone else notice this? I ended up just keeping NR off (definately an NR problem, tried on/off a few times and effect only present with NR on). Some really heavy key clicks here in the EU (up to 5KHz either side). I don't know if it's a matter of education or just selfishness (protecting the run frequency at everyone elses expense). It must seem odd to US stations running 1.5KW when EU stations cannot hear them. I think the only thing left to do is to name and shame. Most other QRM I could deal with ease with the K3. I'm learning how to drive the rig properly now to stop mush in pile-ups (thanks to this reflector), copious use of ATT and RF Gain :-). Managed to survive with AGC-F (90 dB/S), THR 8, Slope 5 without problems (have had problems in the past but learning slowly). The biggest remaining problem with the K3 for me is not being able to adjust some controls whilst transmitting, very frustrating. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 RX Equaliser SW App?
Hi Paul, Yes, I would also like to see firmware RX EQ by mode, but I've been told it's a long way down the Elecraft to-do list due to complexity. However a software approach opens new possibilities limited only by the CAT port speed. By AF I mean the 50,100,200,400,800,1600,2400,3200Hz bands in the RX EQ menu. I would like software to remove the manual drudgery (speed up operation) of me having to manipulate an 8 band graphic equaliser for common AF responses i.e. peak and notch check boxes and a sliders for width, ref level, magnitude and frequency. I suppose the usefulness of any such software calls into question the usefulness of the RX Equaliser in general. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 RX Equaliser SW App?
Hi Paul, The bandwidth and Notch should be done at the IF stage not the AF stage, I think everyone knows this. There has never been a question of where it is better to taylor response. Of course it's better to do these things at the IF stage. I am suggesting a 'cumulative' IF and AF response 'combined'. I could manually taylor (approximate) any required AF response using CAT commands and the available 8 audio bands and gain/attenuation levels. Why wouldn't software be able to do that? It's not a question of how steep the slopes are, its a matter of using an AF feature in the K3 to augment the IF performance. If there was a software tool available to approximately track AF to IF response would you try it? I would, and I think it is possible. Can you give me a reason why it isn't possible? Doug GM0ELP - Original Message - From: pd0psb [via Elecraft] To: GM0ELP Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2009 7:28 PM Subject: Re: K3 RX Equaliser SW App? Hi Doug, Some time ago Wayne and Lyle explained that the RX EQ is not meant as an extra "selectivity tool". It's there to do the last tailoring of passpand response, make up for room acoustics or speaker/hp response. The RX EQ modifies the IF passband and is not a seperate post-detector AF filter. Notch/HPF/LPF/etc can better (and much steeper) be done with bandwidth and notch controls. 73' Paul PD0PSB GM0ELP wrote: Hi All, Does anyone know of a software application for controlling the K3 rx equaliser to specifically create easily adjustable audio filtering toys? Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Suggested techniques for teaching CW?
Hi, I find that most people who already know cw forget the part where you simply have to memorise the code. All the methods discussed so far come after this hurdle. I found that grouping can help i.e. eish, tmo, 12345, 67890, ndb, auv, kr, qy,px.. etc. Once the code can be recalled by association/grouping/acronyms or other techniques, simple mind games can be played during everyday life, such as : 1) running through the alphabet in code from start to finish 2) translating car registration nos whilst in traffic 3) translating text (papers, adverts etc) Having to put aside time especially for CW practice isn't necessary, simple mind practice during everyday life when you are stuck in the 'slow lane' is enough to get you started. When you feel you've hit a wall in terms of recall speed, THEN it's time to look at other methods. Re: [Elecraft] SHIFT pitch
Hi Don, Thanks for info, I have tried it and have let it do the math as you suggested. The problem comes when you are operating in a contest and QRM both above and below is constantly changing. Having both LO and HI CUT to tweek during RX periods ONLY is just too restrictive and no-one I have spoken to in the above situation uses LO and HIGH CUT for this reason. If the primary function of NORM didn't change the roofing filter as well or adjustment were allowed during tx then the situation would be better. Cancelling any redundant settings of LO and HIGH CUT in one button push would be more easily accomplished and would become useable for contests. Everyone I have spoken to are working around these firmware quirks by using the harder to get at secondary feature of the NORM button to select a known SHIFT and WIDTH setting during RX whilst simultaneously trying to type calls. It's a hassle and detracts from the operating enjoyment of the K3 and is why I mentioned it. Re: [Elecraft] SHIFT pitch
Hi, I find that shift has to be reduced progressively as width is reduced on SSB eg. 2.7KHz width *1.5KHz shift 2.1KHz *1.25KHz shift As I decrease the WIDTH past my 2.1KHz roofing filter with DSP, I constantly adjust SHIFT downwards to achieve normal sounding audio eg. 1.8KHz 1.1KHz shift I asked Lyle about it and he said that for SSB, LO and HIGH CUT should be used instead of WIDTH for SSB. WIDTH is meant for narrow bandwidth modes i.e. CW. Personally I find LO and HIGH cut arkward to use, especially when you have optional roofing filters installed. This is because the primary function of NORM is overloaded to automatically select the 2.7KHz roofing filter???. The secondary function of NORM (I/II) means you can have a some defaults, but try remembering what's behind them in the middle of a contest (if you get enough time to select them). It would be nice if the primary function of NORM just normalised the current filter width around the current shift value. I have a Clifton Labs Z1 bufferamp between the softrock and the K3 (both are mounted within the same Altoids tin). I'm using a Delta 44 soundcard and 96KHz sampling rate. I simply followed the very detailed instructions on the Clifton Labs web site: http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com You have to be able to work with surface mount components for both boards. Within a few weeks I got the kits from Clifton Labs/Tony Parks and with minimal effort was up and running. On the downside I currently have 2 mirror image and a one centre noise spikes on-screen. I can't seem to get rid of them, but apart from that most of the spectrum is useable. I can see signals that I can barely hear on the K3. There is no K3 rx noise evident when the softrock is attached to the KXV3. My main useage is the following: 1) Monitoring for a band opening. 2) During each contact in a contest (search and pounce), I find it helps to look where the next station is. This prevents me tuning over him when I've finished the current contact and he isn't transmitting any more. Re: [Elecraft] [K3} fatiguing auido, high noise environment
I have found that having roofing filters automatically track the DSP filter width is a bad idea in a noisy environment. My noise was best tackled with the DSP NB rather than the hardware NB (ie. DSP NB 3-7, IF OFF). The DSP NB still worked with a 1KHz roofing filter in line, but if a narrower roofing filter was selected (400Hz) as a result of reducing the DSP filter width, the DSP NB action vanished, and I was left with the same horrible audio as you are describing. I don't understand the full picture yet, but, DSP NB and NR need a wide roofing filter width (>= 1KHz) to work effectively. However, any narrow DSP filter width (as long as a wide roofing filter was selected) would still still allow DSP NB and NR to work effectively (ie. roofing filter 1KHz, dsp filter 200Hz). The automatic selection of roofing filters makes this combination and many others impossible to select (e.g. if you have a 400Hz roofing filter installed) without messing about with the Elecraft Utility software and disabling filters. My previous post suggested having a menu item that would allow the automatic/manual selection of roofing filters (defaulted to Automatic) to allow for better handling of selectivity in noisy situations. The last 3 CQWW CW I've been using an FT1000MP MkV with inrad 4K roof filter (fully loaded) so was keen to give the K3 the try for the first time. My K3 has 400/1k roofing filters installed. It needed the 400 engaged on all but 15 and 10m which were quiet here in GM and so the 1k came in to good use. I had intended to use Dual PB but forgot all about it. I had one problem with the K3 on top band when the rx went quiet and tx power disappeared in a kind of intermittent way just after transmitting. It took me a while to realise it wasn't the tuner/coax/LPF/Linear connections and seemed to be located in the back panel audio connections area. Putting my hand down the back of the transceiver and giving the connections a wiggle seemed to bring the radio back to life. At one stage I power cycled the K3 and got an ERR PLL message or something on the display. This only happened when I was on top band. I used fast AGC with AGC threshold 5 and AGC slope 10 for high bands and 8/8 for low bands respectively. I changed these settings a number of times during the contest and ended up with several favourites dependant on band/noise. I was raising the threshold in line with rising noise levels and adjusting the slope downward when dealing with pile ups which helped my brain separate the callers by adding sound level difference. Using the PF1 and PF2 keys for threshold and slope worked a treat. I had been using a K1EL keyer with the MkV in the past and decided to simplify things this year with the K3 by using DTR-RTS for key-ptt. This coupled with WinTest contest software worked flawlessly (even with open wire feeder in the shack). I allowed condx to determine my sending speed, if things got hectic whilst running, my speed went up and when trying to bag a weak one on a noisy band my speed went down. I did miss the winkey variable pot when working slow stations, but just had to hope they had been listening to me enough to get the call right before calling. I get more angry with inefficient exchange (mindlessly repeating things like my call) rather than slow speed callers. The worst combo when working a pile up is a slow caller who thinks data type exchanges are the norm, as 9/10 times this one station will cause someone else to steal your frequency whilst you are waiting for his exchange to finish. The EU really is a zoo during CQWW CW and I've tried using lesser radios in the past and given in. I did 24hrs with the K3 and still love it despite the top band band failure. A fully loaded MkV is a hard act to follow, but I did spend $6000 (ROB) on it and then had to install an inrad roof and do key click mods to get it to work properly. Thanks to all who worked me! [Elecraft] K3 Automatic/Manual Roofing Filter selection option in Firmware?
I was experiencing noise on 20m CW which the DSP NB (setting 3-7) could eliminate, but the hardware noise blanker couldn't tackle. The DSP NB could eliminate the noise with my 1 KHz roofing filter selected, but as soon as I reduced the DSP filter width to the point where the 400Hz roofing filter was automatically selected, the noise came back. It would seem from the above that the DSP NB works well when using narrow DSP filter widths i.e. 450Hz - 1KHz under a wide roofing filter (1KHz or greater), but not when a narrow roofing filter is selected i.e. 400Hz. There has also been some discussion on this reflector about DSP NR not working at narrow filter settings and I was wondering if this is because of the automatic selection of narrow roofing filters rather than DSP filter width? Would it make sense to have an option in firmware to select between automatic and manual selection of roofing filters? This would allow a wide roofing filter to be selected i.e. 1KHz or greater when DSP NB is required, coupled with a much narrower DSP filter width i.e. 200Hz, to help with crowded band conditions. I know that this is possible by using the Elecraft filter configuration utility to ignore installed narrow roofing filter options, but I feel this is unworkable for every day operation/conditions. I'd like to see an equaliser memory setting for each mode. I'm getting tired of wondering why the NR isn't working as well as usual on SSB, only to find it's because I've peaked the rx equalisers 800Hz response for CW. 73 Doug -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/PF-%3ERX-EQ-setting-on-K3-tp1471080p1476270.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter NORM
Hi Rich, I don't use the XFIL button to normalise the DSP to the Roofing filter because it works on a cyclic basis, where up to 5 presses would be required (dependant on roofing filters installed) to achieve normalisation. Also, One of the presets (I or II) is active at all times and therefore holds whatever DSP adjustment you have just made and wish to normalise. This means you have the following possible keys to normalised DSP to roofing filter : 1) the second preset 2) 2 norm memories 3) norm To cut down confusion and for obvious reasons, I would like to use the control with the 'NORM' decal to normalise the DSP, so this leaves: 1) 2 norm memories 2) norm I am currently using the 2 norm memories for normalisation. I feel this solution is not optimum for such a frequently used feature, as selecting a norm memory is more complex than just selecting NORM, and you have to remember what you saved in both memories. 73 Doug -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Filter-NORM-tp1456939p1465683.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter NORM
The memories are a great feature, but I still think it could be augmented. 1) The last thing I expect to happen when normalising (1/2 sec press basic function of the Norm button) is for the radio to switch filters, there is an XFIL button for that if I need it. I think this has a negative effect on the user friendliness of the transceiver. In firmware: instead of, Change to default roofing filter for that mode and normalise DSP around it. replace with, Determine current roofing filter in use and normalise DSP around it. 2) When using the norm memories, I've noticed that if you memorise a 1KHz roofing filter and 700Hz DSP, then recall that memory, you get the 'wings' on the filter display associated with the passband being normalised when clearly it is not. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Filter-NORM-tp1456939p1459379.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter NORM
Hi Doug, I was unaware of the norm memory feature. I have the 2.1KHz RF option so I'll probably set up as follows: 1/2 sec push : 2.7Khz RF, 2.7KHz DSP 1/2 sec push rotate left: 2.1KHz RF, 2.1KHz DSP with 150Hz downwards shift. 1/2 sec push rotate right: 2.1KHz RF, 1.8KHz DSP with 150Hz downwards shift. Congrats to whoever thought out the ergonomics behind that feature. Now the final test of remembering how it all works in the heat of battle :-). [Elecraft] K3 Filter NORM
Hi, Is there any way that I can make "Norm" normalise the DSP settings for the roofing filter in use (1.8/2.1), rather than it selecting the default 2.7/2.8KHz roofing filter and normalising the DSP around that? I think I would use Hi and Lo cut more for SSB contesting if there was a fast way of returning them to the default positions for the roofing filter in use. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Filter-NORM-tp1456939p1456939.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances
Hi Deni, I found that placing some tape round the chassis metal work that comes in contact with the top panel completely cured the problem. Certain notes were causing the top panel to vibrate against the top of chassis (no matter how tight the screws were) and having the tape between them dampened the effect. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Software
Hi Tom, Everyone will answer that question differently dependent on which feature set is most important to them and what hardware they have installed in their K3. Have a look at: ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/beta/hfwnotes.rtf >From these notes, you can determine which release has the features that are important to you. I keep all previous 'known' firmware releases on my hard drive in separate folders and also download the latest beta release. This allows me to experiment with the latest, whilst having a known version to fall back on. This method takes all 'risk' out of the equation and allows you to contribute to firmware development. At the moment my 'known' release is V2.23 which I have played with for a couple of weeks without problems and would recommend for a basic K3. There have been a flurry of releases recently introducing new firmware and fixing old bugs which seems to be coming to a head before formal release (currently V2.34). I wouldn't bother with the current latest formal release (V2.02) as it seems to be completely out of date. Re: [Elecraft] K3 :: Data A mode TX EQ function
You could use the following macro till this gets sorted in the firmware: AI0;K31;MN009;SWT53;MN255;K30; A similar macro could replace your TX SSB equaliser settings at the touch of a button. There are more details on a previous posting for RX Equaliser on this forum. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - configure RX/TX equalizer using macros
I was just about to post comments about the implementation of the RX EQualiser when I came across Thomas's post below. I'm now using the elecraft k3 utility program (command tester) to hop quickly between RX EQ settings on the K3brilliant, thanks! Here are some cw suggestions to try: CW RX FLAT AI0;K31;MN008;SWT53;MN255;K30; CW RX 400Hz AI0;K31;MN008;SWT53;SWT24;DN;DN;SWT27;UP;UP;UP;SWT29;DN;DN;DN;DN;DN;MN255;K30; CW RX 1000Hz AI0;K31;MN008;SWT53;SWT12;DN;DN;DN;SWT13;DN;DN;SWT24;DN;SWT27;UP;UP;UP;SWT29;DN;DN;DN;DN;DN;MN255;K30; The 400/1000 (bandwidth) settings both peak the audio response for pitch settings in the 700-800Hz range and have the effect of 'brightening' any cw sig in that window. You can then switch back to FLAT to quickly compare the difference. I mainly use CW and am interested in what RX EQ settings everyone else is using. 73 Doug GM0ELP -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3configure-RX-TX-equalizer-using-macros-tp465559p684019.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
