[Elecraft] K3 and Centurion connection?
I've just gotten a like new TenTec Centurion to replace my Heathkit SB-200. I operate 95% SSB and am a bit perplexed about the connection from the K3 to the Centurion. Yes, RF from K3 goes to RF In, that I know; the question is does the Key Out go to the PTT/VOX or Key In. I'm thinking PTT/VOX but I don't want to assume and screw this up! Anyone have this set up that can help? TenTec offices are closed at the moment or I'd call them. BTW, if anyone is interested in an SB-200 in good working condition, please contact me off list. If you come up with the wrong sideband on a particular band, hole the ALT button to change sidebands. Remove the strain relief connector by removing the two screws and then remove the very small phillips head screw in the side of the connector and twist the shell a 1/4 turn conterclockwise and slip the shell back on the cable. You will find that Pin 1 has a yellow wire and it is the mic audio and connects to Pin 1 of the new 8 pin connector. Pin2 has the shield connected to it and is ground. It connects to pin 8 on the new connector. Pin 3 has a black wire and it is the PTT line - It connects to Pin 2 on the new connector. [Elecraft] Elecraft question
Ron, I bought a soldering station from Circuit Specialists in AZ and, as the order was more than $50, I got a FREE Digital Multi-Meter - it does a good job and I get the same readings I do from my B&K 2707A (cost me about $80 a year ago from Mouser but it reads capacitance, and transistor gain which the FREE DMM doesn't). FREE is good and the performance is A-OK. I also picked up the needle nose pliers and flush cut pliers (sized for circuit board work) at Home Depot for about $12 and they're great...got all of this info from reading the building tips link on the Elecraft site. Am well along with K2-100, S/N # 5266a fantastic kit and well done in all respects. [Elecraft] K2 microphone advice
I need some help/advice. I have completed K2 #5266 and want to use it on SSB, as well as cw. The MH2 hand mike offered by Elecraft/Heil is no longer available and I don't want to use a head mounted mike with earphones which is the only other alternative through Elecraft/Heil. I admit I'm probably spoiled by the "plug 'n play" hand mikes I've used with previous Kenwood/Icom rigs and I'd really like something like that to use with my K2. If the Elecraft/Heil MH2 were still available I wouldn't be asking for help but it's not. What do others of you use? Also, does it need to be a mike with any special features? The guys in Elecraft support have been great to work with but I thought I'd start here since its after 5pm on the west coast. 73, Cary, K4TM K2 #5266 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] 40 & 60 meters K2 #5266
Tom- I hate to bother you again but I've encountered another glitch. After I located the problem on 40 meters with your Cheap 'N Dirty Signal tracing (very effective!), everything aligned perfectly on all bands. This weekend, I installed the 60 meter and 160 meter mods and when I powered up my K2 recognized both - that was the good news. The bad news is I can hear no signals on 40 meters and only hiss on 60 but I am clueless as to whether there are any signals on that 60 meter band since its so new (all I hear is a loud hissing and the same on 40 meters). I hooked up my DMM to R30 and get a steady 7.95 volts (a bit above the 7.5 max in the manual but within 10%...the voltage does not change whether I am on 7000, 7300, 5300 or 5450it doesn't budge - a steady 7.95 volts I tried aligning L30 on transmit and can't get above .3 volts on the power meter (that's "point 3" volts). Aligning L30 on receive is equally as disappointing - the audio his doesn't vary in intensity at all. On 160, my receive antennna (R ant) menu is on "off" so that's not an issue. I hear signals on 160 and the voltages on alignment are 1.85 volts at 1800 Mhz and 6.85 at 2000 Mhz. I'm fairly confident the 160 mod is not the problem (but next time I'll install one mod at a time and align before doing the next! But I did have to take the heat sink off to install both so it made sense at the time). I have checked J15 and I have continuity between pins 1 and 3 (that replaced C-6 which was my original problem with being deaf on 40 meters). At this point, I'm tempted to remove the 60 meter mode and replace some RF Board components to put it back to the original state but I hate to throw in the towel so easily. [Elecraft] K2 deaf
K2 #5266 was playing beautifully on cw and I aligned the filters last night for SSB, had no problems with that alignment. When I finished, I found my K2 deaf on ALL bands (it transmits just fine!)...The RANT is OFF, I have good tone with the SPOT feature (yes, I went through the troubleshooting steps), even went so far as to do a reset...nothing restored my K2's ears. Oh, yes, the antenna jack is connected to the 135' dipole and not the dummy load. I'm hoping its something really simple but at this point (actually at 1:30am), I'm mighty frustrated. [Elecraft] K2 40 tTr VCO lock
K2 #5266 aligned beautifully after I fixed C-6 which the Cheap 'N Dirty Signal Tracer found in about 2" flat. I had it on the air and made about 100 cw contacts before adding some mods: DSP, SSB, NB, 160 meters and 60 meters. I had a problem which was resolved but involved a master reset...so I started on a complete re-alignment today. With the exception of the 40 meter band, the VCO alignment went "by the book" - 7000 and 7300 Mhz both read 7.92 volts and it does not vary as I tune between those frequencies. I have checked the parts which were replaced in adding the mods noted above and re-heated C-71 through 75 and D-19 & 20. Hooked it up for testing and it's still a rock solid 7.92 volts on 7000 through 7300. L-30 is the correct inductor; T5 (wound by Mychael) and D21-26 all worked the first time around on the VCO alignment so I doubt there's a problem there. Does anyone on the reflector have any idea where I should look next? [Elecraft] K2 #5266 A-OK
K2 #5266 is "up and running" and that would not have been possible without the support from Elecraft - Scott and Gary are so responsive to questions and helping me resolve problems I somehow managed to create. Don, W3FPR, and Tom, N0SS, also helped alot along the way. Fortunately for all of them, some problems I avoided by reading the reflector daily! Those who will be adding the SSB mod might like to know - given all the postings about mics - that the TenTec 701 hand mic works nicely; the bias resistor is built into the mic itself and all you have to do is change the plug from a 4-pin to an 8-pin, then follow the KSB instructions. The TenTec mic only costs $28 dollars - a bargain compared to the prices of others I've seen. K4ZM is the one who told me about this - he saw my posting - and even sent the wiring confguration along, too - thanks, Jim! Thanks, Elecraft, for a great product and for encouraging the wonderful comraderie that exists among the Elecraft faithful - it's an added benefit to an excellent product. [Elecraft] K-2 mic query
Fred and Eric- I went through this a few months ago and got excellent advice from this reflector. TenTec sells a hand mic for $28 (the bias resistor is built in so you don't have to add it to the back of the front panel). I bought it and am using it and getting excellent audio reports. (Usual disclaimer, I own no part of TenTec, etc). All I needed to do was remove the 4-pin connector and replace it with an 8-pin. If you need the pin wiring diagram, I'd be happy to send it to you. [Elecraft] k3 fan noise - lots of it.
K3-100 #178 went together flawlessly, well almost, but it was smooth. Was missing two standoffs and two screws for the fan assembly on the KPA-100. When I did the first fan check, the relay or relays clicked but only one operated very quietly (short lead) ...disconnected it as instructed, installed the KPA-100 module and reconnected the fans & panel per instructions. Both fans operate this time but "WOW, is it every loud!" - my wife came in from the next room wanting to know what was making the noise. Her facial reaction when she realized it was the K3 clearly said: "This is the latest and greatest?" Is it the missing hardware or are others experiencing noisy fans, too? [Elecraft] K3 question/problem
I hesitate to put this question on the reflector but "support at Elecraft" is closed until Wednesday, Jan. 2 - understandable, they DO deserve some time off! The assembly of K3-100 (#178) is complete and went very smoothly...all tests checked out flawlessly, the filters are properly aligned per the calibration instructions (offsets, proper mode, etc). I have done the frequency synthesizer alignment using the zero beat with WWV but when I tune WWV at 10 MHz, I have to get the dial to about 9.999.92 or so to be right on it. I have a sked on Sundays with two friends, W5ZNN and WA6EBB, and was hoping to have my K3 operational so they'd be my first contacts. Well, in a sense they were but apparently my signal is about 500 hertz higher than my receive frequency AND the audio sounds narrow and broken. I think the problem may be with the frequency synthesizer alignment...I used the zero beat method until I can get my hands on a frequency counter from some of my more electronically astute ham friends...am I looking in the right direction or should I be looking somewhere else? Best New Year Wishes to y'all. 73, Cary, K4TM Lynchburg, VA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
