Initially, I was seeing a fair amount of noise from it, and was able to quench it by winding a couple of turns around a small clamp-on choke. That doesn't seem to affect the network performance, so I can reliably run it at 400MBit/second, and it seems to clean up whatever other noise it's picking up from nearby homes (most are on small lots of about 1/5 acre) and the condominium complex next door. I still have some strange noise from other sources coming in from the antenna, and the HVAC's air handler is very noisy, particularly on 30m through 15m, but I know it's not the twisted-pair Ethernet line. Re: [Elecraft] [RFI] Mysterious K3 Symptoms - RFI? : Important addendum
I have similar problems but I was thinking it was hamlib because of the way it triggers for me. It happens running wsjtx on an M2 Macbook Pro and remoterig down to the radio in my basement. There's a K3/0 in my office -> remoterig -> K3 & KPA1500 in the basement. Almost every time I move my transmit frequency the RX gain goes down to almost nothing. Jiggling the AF gain brings it back to normal. It doesn't always happen immediately when changing bands but changing TX frequency in-band triggers it right away. On Wed, 13 Mar 2024, Pete Smith N4ZR wrote: Operating in this morning's CWT, and saw a recurrence of strange RFI-like symptoms. After transmitting, RX gain sometimes was severely reduced, but simply moving the K-3's AF gain a little would cause recovery to normal. Sometimes, this was accompanied by a HI CURR warning on the K3's display, often occurring several seconds after switching back to receive. My working theory has been RFI, but my station is pretty thoroughly fitted with toroids. Still, there seems to be a correlation between running my KPA-1500 at about 1100 watts and this set of symptoms, which I have not been able to trigger running 100 watts To further confuse things, I just had another episode of this occurring *several minutes* after the last transmission. One culprit I can think of is a 100-foot Ethernet cable between my station and my FIOS router. I have bought a shielded replacement but have not yet installed it. After reading some of the recent commentary about so-called "shielded" cables, I'm wondering if this is worth doing. Or you can use a second AM receiver and zero beat the tones. You can get it very close that way. On Mon, 28 Jun 2021, Don Wilhelm wrote: Jerry, Read the article on my website. Just adjusting C22 is not enough for a complete job of dial calibration. That oscillator is the clock for the MCU. The dial calibration data is stored in EEPROM and is what is used to display the dial frequency. The EEPROM is loaded by running the CAL PLL menu routine with the counter probe in TP1. Yes, C22 must be adjusted just before running CAL PLL or CAL BFO. I use WWV which transmits 500 or 600 Hz tones on alternate minutes. Using SSB, align those tones with the 500 and 600 Hz markers on your audio spectrum analyzer to assure that you are tuned correctly. Once you get the KSB2 option installed, you can enter the BFO frequencies suggested in the manual and then proceed to do a more precise dial and BFO calibration. The DAC steps for the BFO limits the precision that you can achieve, but 10 to 20 Hz is achievable. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/28/2021 2:16 PM, jerry wrote: Hi Don, One of the first things I did after getting this rig in the mail, was to verify that it received WWV at the proper frequency - and that USB sounded like LSB. I fail to see how this can be done with an SSB receiver with a properly set BFO, since the carrier is then outside of the filter bandpass. Also, except during the announcement period, WWV is actually transmitting multiple "carrier" frequencies at the same time. Not going to mess with SSB a lot at this time because I have the SSB adapter on order, and I'd have to do it all again anyway after receiving that. I just calibrated the counter with the GPSDO. It was showing 9.96 ( forget how many digits :). A quick tweak of the trimmer cap got it to 10. ( however many zeros ). I can easily replace the power pole connectors at the amp end of the cable (maybe just lose a couple of inches of the cable - not a big deal), but what if the "wear" is in the connector part that's soldered to the PCB inside the amp section? I guess I could take it all apart and replace them if neededbut I'd rather not have to. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 questions and low pass filters
I had similar questions. Use a cable with RCA jacks to connect the K3/K3S rear panel 12V DC OUT RCA connector to the KPA1500 REM RCA connector to wake it up. You'll still need something to change OPERATE/STANDBY on the KPA1500, but I just use the KPA1500 utility over Ethernet. The power output on your K3/K3S will be different when you have the amp in OPERATE or STANDBY. On Tue, 21 Aug 2018, Peter W2IRT wrote: Hi all, Just got my 1500 connected last night and so far so good. I do have two questions, however. First, is it possible to toggle standby and operate from the K3s, instead of using either the remote software or physically pressing the button on the amp? And second, I was under the impression that there was a way to have separate transmitter powers depending on whether the amp is inline or not. I normally like to run the full 100W from the K3s, but when I kick the amp in, I have to drop TX power to ~25 Watts. Another issue I have involves the feed path. I am using a remote antenna switch mounted at the tower. At the moment I have all my HF antennas connected through there, using the Antenna 1 port on the amp (previously on the K3s). Antenna 2 is for 6m only. I would like to route the 6m antenna from this switchbox as well, but the problem is the HF output is running through a low-pass filter. Are there low-pass filters that don't cut off until ~54 MHz? I probably want to run anywhere from 100W - 500W out of the KPA1500 for certain digital modes as well as higher power on other modes. And if I hit tune on the KPA1500, is it supposed to key the K3? I might have the "tune" power set too low at 5W. My amp and radio are in the basement (closer to the power panel) and I'm using my K3/0 and remoterig to control it from a bedroom on the 2nd floor. That's what I thought. And as an added question, I still have to see if I can get my PigKnob to work with my K3 upgraded with the KIO3B + P3 with the CBLP3Y. I'd put it inline to the PC connection, I think. I keep forgetting to do that because I mostly used my PigKnob on CW and I'm busy doing JT9/JT65 lately. So all that's just a qualification to take my comments with a grain of salt - it's my fault that I never learnt to use a paddle very well or how to shield my rigs from computer RFI, etc. not the technology. Re: [Elecraft] KSYN3 Cheap
For me the question wasn't about resale value, it was about whether it was easier to listen to the radio with the new KSYN3A. I think it is, though I've never done side-by-side comparisons (others have). I'm not planning on reselling mine, at least not soon, and my fun with the radio is getting on the air once in a while. I know for others it's about designing antennas, or calculating net worth of the equipment. Who am I to say that's the wrong way to participate in the hobby? I hardly ever turn the radio on and it's sitting right next to me right now. It's just nice to have what I think is the best receiver when I do turn it on. This assuming I can get full value for my K3/10 - maybe. Can I get $231 more than I originally paid? -doubtful. Upgrading is definitely cost effective for me - plus I do not have to re-program everything, assemble everything, and add IF output mod to KRX3A which I did for my KRX3. Mainly for this very reason. What ru gonna do with the old boards? They have practically ZERO value. BUT, a good working K3, even if it doesn't have the super synth board etc., still has significant value. Maybe not quite as much as it did B4 the K3S came out, but I figured I could sell my 23XX S/N K3, buy a new K3S and come out ahead of upgrading with a couple new boards and throwing the old ones in the dumpster. This way, the "old" boards have not been converted to junk and a good K3 is still on the air. Re: [Elecraft] KSYN3A mod problem
You can get denatured alcohol from the hardware store, but I think that can contain methanol which I wouldn't suggest using because of toxicity and because it melts more things than ethanol. Methanol will go through your skin so you need ventilation and the correct gloves. Rubbing alcohol from the drugstore can contain some oils that you don't want. If you can get Everclear in your state and you can afford the tax on it, I'd say buy that. On Tue, 8 Sep 2015, Mike Morrow wrote: Food grade EverClear is 100% alcohol... Not quite. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks to Elecraft & this forum
I do. It's more fun to have more radios. Even though my K3 is my favorite, I still like playing with my Icom 706, or the weird handheld 40M radio, or that 10M FM handheld with all the birdies. Oh, and my K2 that's in backup. One of these days I'm going to end up with a KX3. Now that you mention it, maybe I have a problem. On Sat, 31 Jan 2015, Kenneth Talbott wrote: Ditto! That fixed things. The Help had more info and a different reset procedure than in Fred's book: holding down power for 10 seconds. Here's the most important info as of about a year ago the modulation scheme on WWVB (60 kHz) was changed (phase reversal each minute) and this has rendered most of the end-user equipment inoperative. Most (all ?) tracking receivers like the HP-117's are now useless without extensive modification. Most of the "atomic" clocks now in use ->do not<- synch to the current modulation scheme on the 60 kHz signal. This will explain the differences in displayed time on supposedly identical clocks and how some appear to not be getting sufficient enough signal to synchronize. I heard from my time-nerd friends that the modulation scheme changes for a short period at night to allow a chance for older equipment to sync up. I don't know that for sure. Technology Review said there are millions of pieces of equipment that use the older scheme. -- Hisashi T Fujinaka - ht...@twofifty.com BSEE + BSChem + BAEnglish + MSCS + $2.50 = coffee __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA
Well, you just described my day job. We sell hardware (Ethernet controllers) and the driver I support is open sourced Linux and FreeBSD. There are also closed-source versions but I only do backup-support on those. Yes, it would require more support on Elecraft's end but it wouldn't be impossible to manage, just hard. There's a lot of repeating, "If you can't reproduce it on the official X version driver, then you're on your own." But then again there are a lot of bug fixes that other people can do for you. I don't blame them for not doing it, but I'm still on the "It would be nice" side of this. Oe Fri, 15 Aug 2014, Chester Alderman wrote: To me that is just a silly expectation for ANY ham radio manufacturer to consider.
