 Subject:( K3)Can't interface Dx4win to K3
No response from Dx4win reflector so trying K3 reflector again. K3 does not
change frequency when using Dx4win 8.05. Simply times out when a spot is
selected. It had been working w/o problem.
My setup: Win7 computer, native serial port (com1) , P3, Pigknob, Winkeyer. I
am using LP bridge for virtual serial ports. All programs respond as normal,
i.e.,keying, kkey macro program, K3 utility. However, when selecting a spot on
DX spots screen I receive the radio time out, interface disabled. So far as I
can tell the DX spot screen updates and all other features function normally. I
have tried the cable directly to K3 and with another K3 with similar results. I
have also changed serial ports.

Re: [Elecraft] [Dx4win] FW: Can't interface Dx4win to K3

2014-06-06 Thread Howard K2HK
Bob, Bryan,Thank you for response.
Runs normally until I select a spot which should send the info to the K3. I
can see updated spots in the spot window. Selecting a spot disables the radio
interface. Although it resumes indicating incoming spots. FRUSTRATING. I
believe it is independent of the LP Bridge because I have connected a native
port #1 straight through to the K3 with same result.Howard k2hkals...@nc.rr.com

get a time out. Maybe it is the lpt bridge.

[Elecraft] XG3 cable

2013-06-01 Thread Howard K2HK
Conclusion to lost (?) XG3 cable. With the pinout supplied by Dave, G3GJP, and
some junk that I had in the shack I was able to make up the XG3 cable. The
probable cause of my dilemma and solution was TOO MUCH JUNK in the shack. Think
I'll spend the $30 bucks on dinner tonight.
Anyone needing the pinout can contact me and I will pass it along.

Thank you all for the replies. This should help me flush it out or at least

same as the KX3 if you have one. .bill nr4c the cable should be like very few
you might have.. one end has a 3.5mm TRS plug.. and the other has a 9-pin

That's if you have the RS-232 version. Otherwise, the 9-pin is replaced with a
USB A connector (the flat one) Ray,K2ULR
Look on page 30 of your owners manual. The schematic for the cable is there. My
ops manual is Rev D.I guess you could get a replacement from Elecraft. There is
more cableconnector (power) info on Page 7 of the manual.Rick W7KLG

identical.Matt, k6nia
Or use a cable from another Elecraft piece like the KX3 etc.K9yeq..Bill
I hold the supreme ranking worldwide for Cable Unfindable as i have so many
of them so frightened that they cringe in fear when i yell out to them to
announce their whereabouts.
Elecraft have them of course. They look like a stereo plug on one end with a
USB plug on the other end.
To assist you in locating it, elecraft thoughtfully supply black

 Hi,

Sure, the wireless connection is using a Lantronix WiFi serial server. I
think they have only model, but I don't have the model number in my head.
I'll look it up when I get home. It supports two serial ports as you can see
in the pictures. Note that the serial connection over the Lantronix and is
my sole control of the box (other than disconnecting the extension cord for
power). No Aux bus. I don't find this terribly limiting. Maybe somebody can
find a way to make a bridge between the Aux bus and a serial port.

The shiny box contains a homemade duplexer with a split frequency of 10MHz.
It is currently used to feed an 80m and a 15m antenna from port 3 (the
common port is on the back of the box and you can see the port 3 cable
looping around to the back). It's working very nicely.

[Elecraft] possible cataclysmic blow to amateur radio

2011-06-13 Thread Howard K2HK

Is the following an urban legend or has it some validity? I do not subscribe to
CQ mag so can not confirm its appearance there. If true it would be a
cataclysmic blow to amateur radio.

Fellow Amateur Radio Operators, If you don't subscribe to CQ magazine, in the
April
Issue (pg 28) is an article that is a bit disturbing. The
article was written by Professor Emil Heisseluft who
is currently in Geneva, Switzerland, consulting with
his European colleagues at the Large Hadron Collider
on his specialty, the Higgs bosom. Professor
Heisseluft obtained this information while on a trip to
Washington, DC and the halls of congress.
I will give you a short recap.
Draconian cuts in the federal budget for FY2012
portend significant staffing cuts in the FCC that will
drastically impact the Amateur Radio and Amateur
Satellite Services. Among other things, operators
using the 160-6 meter bands will be limited to
operating on odd or even days of the week, depending
on the numeral in their callsign. If the number is even
you get even numbered days and odd, odd number
days.
New-issue vanity callsigns will become a thing of the
past along with special event callsigns. The wait time
for reissuance of a callsign for a Silent Key will be
extended from two to five years.
This will be imposed without the usual Notice of
Proposed Rule Making because of the emergency
nature of the matter.
Interesting. When this goes into effect I would not be
able to talk to another Ham Radio Operator in the
U.S. with an odd
callsign. Emergency communications on HF would
become a problem along with HF net activities.

I may be one of the least qualified to answer ur question but having recently

Depending on ur logging program there are variations but all is explained very
clearly in the help files. My station is of medium complexity with some
switching that is unique to my situation. With a lot of thought and help from
memebers of the Microham reflector it went together veery well. You mention the
Virtual ports. That is an area that has been problematical for me in the past

Re: [Elecraft] P3 wish list

2010-11-18 Thread Howard K2HK

Alan,
Thank you for considering it. I do think it may have value beyond equalization,
eg. signal width, etc. I can understand your reluctance as you describe the
pitfalls. I certainly wouldn't feel bad about waiting for a better
implementation. Possibly after the effects of your turkey dinner wears off it
will be replaced with a new energy to update:-). Kudos for the very nice job
you all have done so far.
I didn't jump right in on this one because I didn't think it of sufficient
value for me but I am very pleasantly surprised at the result. An excellent
station accessory.

73 and Happy Thanksgiving to all,
Howard..K2HK

Unless you change microphones or operators, transmit audio equalization
should be pretty much a set and forget type calibration.

I'm a little nervous about making this an official feature, because
the signal level is not well-controlled. It depends on stray leakage
through a balanced mixer and blow-by past a couple of PIN diode
switches. If the mixer in a particular K3 happens to be very well
balanced or the PIN diodes have extra-low capacitance, there may not be
enough signal level to adjust the equalizer properly. It also depends
on frequency band and transmit power level.

There may be a better way to do this. It's on my list of things to look
at as soon as I get time.

[Elecraft] 4.21 APF impressions

2010-11-13 Thread Howard K2HK

Been playing with the new 4.21 release for a few hours. My impressions of the
APC is it is an excellent addition to the CW op's tools. Smoothly boosts the
weak signal out of the noise. Thanks to both Elecraft and the reflector members
who pushed for this refinement. Although we might get tired of seeing similar
posts urging a wanted addition it sure is beneficial when the results are like
this one.

The only change I note on SSB is that I can turn my gain down to 5~6 with a
Yamaha CM500(?) It was previously at ~19. One other note I can't hear any
difference if I am using High or Low bias. Checked with monitor and DVR.

[Elecraft] K3..Power Poles and my bad, very bad

2010-06-28 Thread Howard K2HK

I had a very senior moment yesterday related to PowerPoles and could use some
help. The power supply that my K3 is powered by has an auxiliary cigar lighter
outlet. In the midst of a project (too late at night)I plugged that cable into
a similiar PowerPole which turned out to be the cable from another P/S which
happens to be a 24 VDC supply. The K3 went dead in a blink. Does not restart.
First, any suggestion of where to start looking? Second, although this never
happened to me before it is something to be aware of if you have several
terminals dangling at your desk. Embarrassing situation!

 The THP2.5 uses a regular 15-pin D-connector, whereas the K3 uses the 15-pin
HD D-connector. Nothing special needs to be done, other than finding the
pin outs from the manuals. The THP 2.5 even has pull-up resistors so early
K3 radios will drive the band data input just fine (NOT the case with the
THP 1.5, where you need the K3 pull-up mod). If you plan on using ALC, you
do need the K3 negative-going ALC mod if you have an early K3.

case it will be limited by the isolation in the KAT3.

The alternative is to use the subreceiver and Aux Ant jack
with AB logic for transmitting. That case will require an
entirely new band decoding/BPF/antenna switching topology -
one that supports TX/RX/RX switching (which happens to be on
of the features of microHAM Station Master Deluxe whenever
it is finally available) and an understanding that the
transmit radio will always be in the left ear (e.g. will
move with transmit focus).

JMHO but I believe true SO2R should wait until there's more real estate on a
larger K4 front panel, even if the internal RF issues can be solved in the
K3. The K3 already suffers from ergonomic overload and lack of flexibility
with antenna selection, audio routing, etc. even when just using diversity
in SO1R. True SO2R adds another level of complexity to an already
overloaded interface. Given this, I believe there are higher priorities to
work on with the K3 and save SO2R for a better human interface in the K4.

Re: [Elecraft] ext ALC problem

2009-05-28 Thread Howard K2HK

Don,

The output of the K3 decreases regardless of whether it is attached to amp or
not when ALC is turned on. At this point I believe the problem to be in the
area of the digital I/O board. If (when) I decide to use the external ALC I
will check it out.

Howard

HK

From: w3...@embarqmail.com
Howard,

It sounds like the ALC voltage coming out of your amplifier is much
greater than the K3 ALC input range.

The ALC voltage from your amplifier is reducing the K3 power output. I
believe the problem is with the amplifier, not the K3.

Remove the ALC connection to your amplifier, then using the K3 power
control, slowly increase the drive to your amplifier while measuring the
voltage being developed at the amplifier's ALC output. It should be
zero or very close to zero until the amplifier comes near its power
limit. If the voltage at the amplifier is in excess of the ALC
threshold you have set on the K3, then the K3 will reduce power.

In other words, if you want to set the K3 ALC Threshold at -4 volts,
adjust the amplifier's ALC circuits to produce -4 volts when the
amplifier's power limit is reached.

As others have pointed out, attempting to use the amp's ALC output to
control the power output of the K3 is bad practice and is likely to
produce distorted signals and splatter.

I am having a problem with the external ALC. I am trying a new amp that
requires ALC feedback. When I set it in the config menu regardless of the value
-2 to -8 my output is reduced to 60 watts. As I raise the drive it increases
until about 60 watts then cuts back. In the tune position which I have set for
15 watts I get only 1-2 watts out. This occurs regardless of whether I am
connected to the amplifier or not. The SWR is between 1.2and 1.5. I do have the
mod installed.

[Elecraft] Sub vs Split

2009-02-14 Thread Howard K2HK

I'm sure this is obvious to most but not to me. I am blaming it on separation
anxiety since my K3 only recent returned from Aptos.

I have the KRX3 installed and work split using the Sub Rx. I lock vfo B on the
DX and use vfo to find a tx frequency. When might using the split button be
indicated? What are the differences?

[Elecraft] Update and another request Lost SSB after KRX3 install..Ideas?

2008-12-07 Thread Howard K2HK

After sending the msg below I removed the KRX3 and also reinstalled the 2.7
filter whose position had been moved on the RF board. Neither of these made any
difference. KRX3 works as expected, CW works as usual but..no audio output
on SSB. Howard..K2HK
HKNo TX audioDate: Sat, 6 Dec 2008 18:12:28 +I recently installed the KRX3
in my K3. At the same time I moved some filters and installed an additional one
on the main board . I now have the problem of no audio on SSB. Works FB on CW.
I am thinking the culprit is likely to be the 2.7KC filter on the main board.
Before opening up things again I thought I would ask for some
suggestions.Howard..K2HK HK___

2008-12-07 Thread Howard K2HK

Thanks for the reply Dick. That's the first thing I checked and I wish that was
the problem with it's easy fix. I might also thank you now for the very useful
program which I use more often than I anticipated. Luckily this the 160 CW
contest weekend. Nothing lost yet but if I don't come up with an answer soon it
looks like I will lose lots of time when I return to Aptos.

Have you enabled the 2.7 kHz filter for all modes in receive using the CONFIG
FLx menu or the K3 Utility’s Crystal Filter Configuration page?

If the 2.7Khz sub filter is enabled for SSB and CW, are you getting sub
audio output in CW at 2.7Khz?

 Barry N1EU

Barry,
I'm not sure what the sub audio is?

CW audio output normal with 2.7k. Good question I hadn't thought about but
still no cigar.

[Elecraft] Lost SSb after KRX3 install.. The end

2008-12-07 Thread Howard K2HK

Found the cause of my lost SSB after much hair pulling. It was not or almost
not related to the install. The problem turns out to be in pin 1 in the front
mike connector. I rewired the mike for the back connectors and voila audio is
working. Too late to open things up tonight for an exact dx and tx but will get
it in the AM. Thanks for all the suggestions which allowed me to eliminate
several possibilities. This was not expected since I didn't get my big hands in
that area.
