Hello Jerry,

Hello K2 experts!

I'm not an expert, but the "Elecraft KIO2 Programmer's Reference" at

Extended SET format: PCnnn; where nnn is 000-150 in 0.1-watt units without the PA, 000-150
watts with.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 power output

2023-05-12 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Dave,

I have a K1 that I’m looking to sell, and took a look at the power output
before listing it. Power output is as follows:

40 meters 5.2 watts
30 meters 4.5 watts
20 meters 1.3 watts
17 meters 0.7 watts

These are obviously not the expected power output levels. Power supply voltage
= 12.8 volts. Output set to 7 in the menu.

What type of fault would this indicate?

All components for the filters for 40 meters and 30 meters filters are located between
same contacts sides of K5A/K5B and K6A/K6B. The components for 20 meters and 17 meters are
located all on the other sides of these relais contacts.

I therefore advise you to check the contacts of these relays as a first step. If you have
switched the K1 to 40 meters or 30 meters, zero ohms should be measurable with an ohmmeter
across the contact.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and SWR

2023-03-16 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Paul,

The tuner in my KX3 used to give me a nice 1:1 SWR at
7.05 MHZ.  Now the best match it will give there is about 1.6:1.  In the "old days" we
were happy with anything under 2:1 but can new rigs like my KX3 tolerate this poorer
match?  I only run 5-watts CW.

The KX3 should tolerate an SWR of 1.6:1. I have already unintentionally transmitted with
my KX3 (5W CW) without antenna and the KX3 is still in good health. The manual says at
page 6: "The KX3 reduces power if SWR is high."

Re: [Elecraft] ES-80

2023-02-05 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Marshall,

Does anyone know if the Elecraft ES-80 case will fit an Icom IC-705?

I like the looks/design and layout of the Elecraft case and I want to get a
KX-2 or a KX-3 in the future but right now I have an IC-705 and I need a
good portable case for it.

The KX3 will not fit in thge ES-80 case, because the IC-705 is 3.2 inch deep (without
knobs) and the KX3 is 2.7 inch deep (measured with knobs). The Specs for the ES-80 says
3.15 inch deep inside.

Re: [Elecraft] Receiver impedance?

2022-05-25 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Wunder,

What is a typical input impedance for modern receivers, or specifically
Elecraft receivers?

I’m asking because antenna tuners are a frequent question on an SWL group I
follow and I’m pretty sure that they are not needed for most situations. If the
receiver input impedance is not 50 Ω, that is a big data point.

My belief is that receivers are generally medium or high impedance, depending
on whether the first RF preamp is bipolar or FET, but either way, mostly
voltage-oriented.

And, yes, I know that antenna tuners can be a LPF or HPF, depending on their
configuration.

You ask for the receiver impedance, not the tramsmitter impedance. I didn't know the
answer. But I always assumed that it wasn't 50 ohms. Therefore, I measured the impedance.

Meter: Vector Antenna Analyzer FA-VA5

Output Power: 5.6 dBm (S9+78.6 dB)
Impedanz: 50 ohms
Frequency: 7030 kHz

Object under test: Elecraft KX3
Conditions: ATU BYP, FREQ 7030 kHz, PRE OFF, ATT OFF
Measured data: Z = 76.0 ohms + j 9.0 ohms
Magnitude Z = 76,5 ohms, L = 204 nH
SWR = 1.56

Re: [Elecraft] K2 transmit limitations (correction)

2020-08-09 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Bonjour Pierre,

David put the finger on the right point, because my answer was not complete.
Thank you!

I plan to buy, build and use a K2 and have one question : during the setting of this
transceiver is it possible to strictly put limits to the frequencies which can be used
like for exemple limit strictly the 17m band to 18,068 to 18,168 as in some countries a
transceiver will not be authorized if it can transmit outside of the authorized frequencies ?

You put two question in your mail. So here are both answers.

No, it is not possible to restrict the K2 transmitting frequence during the building
process, neither by hardware nor by software.

And yes, it is possible to transmit with a K2 outside the ham radio bands all
times.

But I don't know any reason why a ham radio operator should send outside the frequencies
that are reserved for us. And to restrict the frequence area in a ham radio band makes
also no sence to me, if you are a ham radio operator.

Re: [Elecraft] VFO drift KX3

2020-03-19 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello Ed,

Lately, I've noticed my 3-year-old KX3 drifts a small amount, according to
the readout, in CW mode. For instance, if I set rig on 7.033.00 hit the key
and look at the readout it will say 7.033.010 and sometimes bounces back to
7.033.00

I don't remember this being a problem before. Is this normal for the KX3 or
is there something I should look into?

I suspect it is the VFO button itself. If it is too loose, a tuning step can be generated
one way or the other.

Any ideas?

I use the "Terminal Window" of "Elecraft KX3 Utility" for typing CW via keyboard. And the

But I can't decode characters given with the key. Only via keyboard - butthat was not your

I had the same problem a few years ago. Charging with an external charger seemed to work.

This statement surprises me, because the manual says for the menue "Waterfall" the default

Does that mean 100% of the half display height?

And there was no answer to my second question:

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] looking for method to get K2 to send serial output via KIO2 without prompt

Hello Steve,

It would be great if I could see if it worked "the other way" in other
words, if the K2 could somehow be made to send at least something out the

As you can see, because the KIO2 appears to not be able to send the
received data to the main MCU, I can't get the MCU to speak.

It should be possible, because the terminal program can i.e. ask for the frequency and the
K2 will answer via KIO2.

Re: [Elecraft] Does this look like a low battery problem?

2019-05-10 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello Joe,

Out portable yesterday - KX3 powered by an 8400mahr LiFe battery pack, which
was fully charged that morning before I started operations. Antenna was a
Buddipole vertical on 7119, SWR1.1, with j, C and L components all zero (ie on
the antenna's resonant frequency). KX3 running at 15W out.

After an hour of operating (SSB), the KX3 started to wander off frequency by a
1Khz on transmit. A contact noticed this during a QSO. The battery showed 13.1v
at the time.

I changed the battery, and with the new one the KX3 worked normally.

Is this a low battery issue, or do I need to look elsewhere?

I use my KX3 down to 10 volts an lower without any frequency change.
I suspect rather great transitional resistance, especially when transmitting.
Are the wires from the accu to the KX3 thick enough?
Are the connectors are stable enough (no defective/intermittent contact)?

Is there a solution to hold the underside of the transceiver in place AND to hold the

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft's source code

2017-05-12 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello Harry,

Elecraft is in a bit of a Catch 22 because yes with open source they could get
the benefits from it
But it could also equate to more "warranty" work for Elecraft when someone
messes up their radio.

I think this is the main reason to "close" the source code. I have seen the problem with
open source on SDR software. Anyone who thinks he could also program or could better
program modify the open source code and spread it. Who uses the modified code and finds an
error with his transceiver/computer, turns to the manufacturer of the hardware and not the
manufacturer of the software.
I like my Elecraft rigs (with the closed source). The developer team tested it and I can
use it without jamming anywhere. Requests flow into the software after weighing.

Re: [Elecraft] Internal Impedance of Li-Ion Battery Packs

2014-08-04 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello Jim,

... So my
question is, what sort of internal resistance should I expect for a battery
rated like
this? ...

...

Here's a pack that I'm considering.

http://www.batteryspace.com/polymerli-ionboxbattery111v252ah27972wh14arateli-ionwithcarsocketsmartcharger.aspx

Thats easy! Following the link the description says:
11.1V 25.2Ah Polymer Li-Ion battery pack is made of 2 pcs of 11.1V 12.6Ah Polymer Li-ion
battery modules in parallel connection

Following the next link to the 11.1V 12.6Ah Polymer Li-ion battery modules
says now:
11.1 V 12.6 Ah pack is made by 3 pcs Polymer Li-Ion cell of 3.7V 12.6Ah

Following again the lin, at his time to the Polymer Li-Ion cell of 3.7V 12.6Ah brings the
value:

Internal Resistance: 14 m-ohm

3 times 14 milliohms in each row (= 42 milliohms) with 2 rows parallel results in 21
milliohms for the whole pack.

Re: [Elecraft] Modern battery for K2

Bonjour Denis,

HI I have just acquired a Super Polymer Lithium Ion battery from an Ebay
seller, it's part no. is DC 1298A, (12V 9.8Ah)
Also received a small charger with this battery for 120-240 Vac. The
physical size seems like it will easily fit inside my K2 with room to
spare. Is this battery safe to fit internally in my K2 and recharge using
the supplied external charger?

Sounds good, because the text for the blue batteries at ebay says: With its
multi-protective device, the inner circuit prevents the box from over-recharging or
over-discharging. So the balancer is already included in the packet and the packet should
be save. Merci for the tip.

Re: [Elecraft] Modern K2 internal battery options

2013-06-02 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello Mike,

Several people have used LiPos in the K2 - I looked into it but I decided it
was too risky. There is a risk of fire/explosion but with suitable
protection the really big risk letting the battery go flat and ruining it. I
have a LiPO pack to power the K2, but it remains external and has a low
voltage warning buzzer.

LiFePo4 (lithium iron phosphate) cells are saver than LiPo cells. 4 of them in a row are
usable for 12 volts transceivers. Working voltage: 3.3 volts x 4 = 13.2 volts. But a
balancer (like with LiPo cells) is necessary to prevent overchanging and uneven unloading.
Individual cylindrical in shape cells (with bolts as contacts) are avaiable from different
stores - balancers as small PCB too (all balancer with 4S are usable). But watch: Neither
the cells nor the balancer are cheap!

There are also ready to use accus, which contain 4 LiFePo4 cells with the necessary
electronic i.e. from Vision, see
http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/251470/Vision-LFP1245-12V-45Ah-LiFePO-4-Battery-Rechargeable.
To use this batteries only a normal loader for lead batteries is necessary. Unfortunately
fits the currently available batteries not in the K2.

Very strange problem I am having between the K3 and the computer for rig

works just fine and other times it goes funky, looses rig control or cw

works fine and not other times.

Make sure that you have no RF in the shack. If RF is present, it can enter direct in the

the K3 and the adapter with torroids on the control cable.

The first bounding factor is the internet provider. For example AOL cuts the subject line

The second bounding factor is the mail client at the receiver. Mobile phones e.g. can
display less than this signs.

If you would like to write a novel, please use the body. The subject is a line

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Solar Panel Tests with K1 and A123 Battery

2012-06-11 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED
Hello Eric,

Like Barry wrote: Don't use your battery without a solar charge controller.
The only (!) situation for connecting the panel direct to the barttery is, if
your
transceiver sucks more current in RX mode as your panel can deliver AND (!!!)
you pull out
the panel, if you switch off your transceiver. In all other cases use a solar
charge
controller. The reasons are following.

Foundation: A solar panel delivers up to 20 or 22 V if the current is low (or
zero). Yes,
the voltage drops if you put on a transceiver which sucks a lot of current.

Case 1: But what is happend if you switch your transceiver off? Right, the
voltage rise
step by step during charging your battery because the charge current drops
slowly. Anytime
the voltage transcends the cut off voltage of the battery (13.8 volts) and the
battery
begins to produce gas and/or loses water (also at SLA's). Any loss of water or
acid will
reduce the capacity of the battery and will reduce the life time of the battery
because
you can not refill water or acid in SLA's. Esacaped acid is visible as white
sediment
around the small vents on the upper surface of the battery.

Case 2: If you use a high-performance solar panel, so the current from the
panel is
greater than the current to your transceiver. So the battery will charge at all
times and
transcends anytime the cut off voltage. Consequences: See case 1.

If you want to use your battery for a long time, please use a solar charge
controller.

 fielding a station?

Do not knock your transceiver! ;o)

I think the elecraft transceiver are all robust for fielddays or portable use.
But all
transceivers have knobs, jackets and displays, which shold be sheltered during
transportation.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Antenna

2012-04-07 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED
Hello Jim,

What antenna is shown on the KX3 photo. It is mounted on a 90 degree
 BNC adaptor.

Careful if you mount the whip antenna directly at the KX3 (or other
transceivers).
The force that the 1.4 m long antenna exerts on the BNC socket of the
transceiver is not
negligible, especially if wind blows. It's better to use a short piece of koax
cable as
flexible connecting piece and put the antenna on a separate stand.

Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 niMh 1.2v batteries

2011-09-05 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED
Hello Bob,

I have the internal battery option installed on my K1-4. I searched for
batteries online and at Radio Shack. Elecraft recommends Radio Shack brand
batteries, but warns that they must not be larger than 0.55 (14 mm). I
need 8 NiMh 1.2 volt cells. The RS batteries do not specify the diameter of
 the cells. ...

Is there an additional information on the batteries or in the text?
The batteries labeled AA (or Mignon) have a diameter of 14.3 mm (and a length
of 51 mm).
So any AA/Mignon cell (any brand) should fit.

Re: [Elecraft] Junk mail from elecraft...

2011-05-29 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED
Hello John,

It looks to me like the elecraft@mailman.qth.net input filters have been
compromised -- I am getting junk mail spam from the sex trade via the
Elecraft server. I see that QTH.COM appears to be the underlying
service, so perhaps it is the source of the junk? ...

The spam, which you received, did not dispatch over the Elecraft list.
If like that, each member would it was received. But that is not like that.

The spammer changed its behavior. They use email addresses as senders, which
them find on
unprotected computers in a adress book. And the transmitters are usually
stolen
computers in one of the many botnets. The owners of the computer do not know
often nothing
about this botnet applications, which run on their computer.

So do not suspect Elecraft or QTH.com therefore. Use your delete key or improve
your
filter settings. And do not open any attachements, also not automatically by
the program
(switch of the representation of pictures in your email program and do not
permit to
reload external pictures automatically).

No, I am not an expert, but I have learned and I learn a quantity over it.

Hello jrstorms,

Trying to set the freq cal for the reference using method 2 since I do not
have a freq counter. I may be tone deaf or something but I am not sure what
the beat-freq sounds like. Wish someone would post or send a sound file
demonstrating the beat freq when off, close and good sounds like. ...

You could not hear a beat frequency. Noboby can hear it. But you can locate it.
Turn your
VFO/BFO slowly around the target frequency (up and down). If you VFO/BFO
frequency was
higher than the target frequency you can hear the tone/frequency goes lower and
lower. At
one point you can't hear it. If you turn the VFO/BFO in the same direction, so
you can
hear the tone/frequency again, but the frequency goes now higher. The area, at
which you
can't hear the tone, that is the beat frequency.

Hello Nick,

Looking for some help please. My K2 has developed some distortion on received

about to check out the AF amp but wondered if my symptoms ring any bells with
long-time K2 owners (I should add that my K2 was damaged by lightning static
and these faults possibly spring from that time.

Maybe the headphone jack in your K2 is (a little bit) faulty. The contacts for
the
headphone works sill. But the switcher inside the jack failed. This is the
reason why the
speacker an the external speacker jack failed too.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Battery needs CPR

2009-02-04 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED
Hello Tom,

I know I be late but hope not too late.

The problem was that I went QRT for a year or so and left the battery
unattended and now it won't hold a charge.
...
 Any ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe your battery has a chance, but without guarantee. You say the battery
don't hold the
charge. So my question. Is there a significant charge current (minimum 100 mA)
over some
hours, if you put the SLA on 13.8 volts? If you now say yes, put the SLA in
the garbage,
like also Don sayed. But if you say no, it's possible to bring the SLA back
to life.

In this case it's looks like the battery has a sulfat layer on the lead
packages. This
caused in a high internal resistance. You can measure after a charge 12 volt to
13.8 volts
with a DMM, but the batterie don't hold the charge. The reason for it is, that
the battery
has not sucked any significant current during the charge process.

So try the following procedure: Put the SLA on a charger, which gives 13.8
volts AND a
which has a current limiter of 100 mA or 200 mA or so. For controlling put a
ampere meter
in row with the battery. You will see for days or sometimes for 1 or 2 weeks no
significant current flow. But if the sulfate layer at last is broken, the
current flow
jumps up. You know now, why the charger needs a limiter. After the charge
procedure is
solved, discharge the SLA again controlled until 10.5 volts and repeat the
charge process
with normal conditions.

I repeat it: There is no guarantee, but hope.

2008-02-15 Thread Ingo Meyer (DK3RED)

Hello Geoff,

I have a quick question, as I have been using an MFJ tuner to a balanced
feedline on a doublet, and have not built a balun for the K2/KAT2 yet.
Is there a bypass mode for the KAT2 such that I can use an external
tuner? ATU AUTO, of course, causes the KAT2 to go thru a tune cycle
when pressing the TUNE button on the K2.

Yes, its possible. If you use the KAT2 as SWR/wattmeter only, the matching network
is disabled/bypassed. Switch your KAT2 via the menu to CALS (for SWR display) or
CALP (for power meter).

I can see your point, but I think the K3 energy will dissipate to a

[Elecraft] Re: KBT2 non-original battery replacements?

Hello Sverre,

But that's the question, is a battery a battery? I can get a 2.6 Ah battery
with the same measurements for about $15.00 (NOK 90) from one vendor and I
can get another one for about $40.00 (NOK 260 - Asahi, Made in China). I
would guess that these batteries may have different life expectancies, but I
can live with that.

I bought also a battery (2.2 Ah Panasonic here) from a local dealer for the same
reason. ;o)

But, do I take a risk with my K2 if I install the cheaper battery - leakage,
explosion ..., i.e. what should I look for?

No, if you don't over charge the battery it will be very old in your K2. My
battery is now over 6 years. And it's young, fresh and in good condition.

[Elecraft] Re: K2 Speaker not muting?

2006-11-30 Thread Ingo Meyer (DK3RED)

Hello Tom,

In the CQWW cw contest I operated with K9VV as VP2VVV with K2/100 and
wire antenna. On Saturday afternoon while Fred was operating, I suddenly
could hear the K2 receiver even though Fred was using a headset. We
changed headsets and that did not mute the speaker. I vaguely remember
reading on the reflector about this before. I went to the elecraft
website and tried a search but to no avail.
Anybody got the solution? I find it hard to believe that the front panel
jack could 'wear out' this quickly. I have only used the K2 in contests
about 4 times and the headphones typically go in on Friday nite and stay
there until Sunday evening. Otherwise the K2 sits in a Pelican case
awaiting its' next adventure.

I have the same problem here with my K2 #01181 since 2 or 3 months. The rig is ongoing in
use, with plug in and pull out the headphone all along. But I thing is not to be depending
on the number of plug-ins and pull-outs. Maybe the spring steel inside the jack will be
softer/lazier or the plastic material of the housing of the jack will lose it's softener
and do not hold tight, so the contacts do no longer close. I have noticed, it is not the
full sound intensity which I can hear with a pluged-in headphone from the speaker. As the
only one solution I see is to change the jack itself.

2006-10-27 Thread Ingo Meyer (DK3RED)

Hello Alex,

Plaese help me with the KAF2-module in my K2.
How I can adjusting null in CALn for best result?

With your ears like the manual suggested. ;o)

Can I use analog multimeter for best result? How?

Yes, you can. Connect an analog multimeter on the AF output and adjust R1
respectively R2
on the KAF2 module. A maximal signal must be your goal.

An alternative choice is to use the (freeware) software named Spectrogram.
You will find
the software via the Elecraft Homepage on Tom Hammond's (N0SS) or also on my
website.
Connect a computer with a sound card inside on the AF output. Now you can
adjust R1
respectively R2 on the KAF2 module exactly. I use the software also to match
the in the
manual suggested birdie at 7000 kHz with my CW sidetone.

[Elecraft] Re: KAT2 relays (was: K2 Crystal Filter Alignment Questions)

2006-08-19 Thread Ingo Meyer (DK3RED)

Hello Jeff,

p.s. Here's a trivia question to which I'm curious to know the answer: Why
is it that the KAT2's relays chatter pleasantly when you turn the K2 on, but
make not a peep when you turn it off?

The relays are latch types and memory the last position without floating current. If you
turn on your K2 the microprozessor switch all relays with the typical relay chatter in a
start position. If you switch the K2 off the microprozessor going to sleep - no need to
work with the relays.

[Elecraft] Re: Battery power problems.

2006-06-07 Thread Ingo Meyer (DK3RED)
Hello Tom,

I ran my K2 last weekend on a battery (from my backyard – fully
charged 52 Ah. Gel cell), and everyone on the net (40 meter SSB)
complained that the signal was distorted and just plain sounded very
bad. One person suggested that it was the 12 volts put out by the
battery, rather than the typical 13.8 volts. I brought out my power
supply and everything worked fine. I guess it was surprising that
this radio, that I understood was for portable operation wouldn’t
work well on battery power. Has anyone else experienced this or is it
unique to my radio? This is a 4000 serial number. I have on order
the W4RRY battery booster. By comparison, my FT-857 seems unaffected
 by 12 volts. Tom W6EIJ

I don't have newer any problem with my K2 at battery voltage lower than
12 volts. Sometime I work with my K2 (#01118) until the transceiver
beeps in my ears, because the voltage is under 11 volts or so.

Could someone please let me know what that link is.

I think the last freeware version 5.1.7 of Spectrogram was placed anywhere on the Elecraft

[Elecraft] Re: Internal battery life (clarification)

2005-11-17 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Bill,

... So I am curious how long the battery generally
lasts before going dead.

The time is dependent from your operating style, the installed option, the
output power and from the style you wound the transformer for the internal
K2 PA. I have not count the hours between charging periods. But its longer
than I want to operate without a break. ;o)

The following is based of equal periods for transmitting and receiving,
because i.e. I send my QTH info and receive the same info from the other
station.

1 hour QSOs = 30 minutes RX + 30 minutes TX

If you use CW you don't transmit the whole 30 minutes, because there are
spaces between the dits and dahs. The real ratio is about 1:1 while TX.

So the new formula is

1 hour QSOs = 45 minutes RX + 15 minutes TX

Now back to the K2. My K2 need 0.28 A while RX and 1.84 A while TX. The
current is dependet from the installed options and more in your K2. Measure
it with the internal meter!

45 minutes RX = 0.75 hours x 0.28 A = 0,21 A
15 minutes TX = 0.25 hours x 1.84 A = 0,46 A

   1 hour QSO = 0.67 A

The internal battery contained 2.2 Ah so you can operate 2.2 Ah / 0.67 A =
3.28 h (= 3 hours 17 minutes).

These period is valid only for hardcore QSOers. If you receive longer than
you transmit, so the result will be greater.

2005-10-21 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Norm and Sverre,

THERE ARE switches with the same footprint and the same outfit like the
original one. I have found one here in Germany by Conrad Electronic.
Put the number 708330 in the input area named Artikelnr.-Suche on the top
of the main page by www.conrad.de and press enter.

Picture: www1.conrad.de/xl/7000_7999/7000/7080/7083/708330_BB_00_FB.EPS.jpg
Type: Marquardt 4021.0801

Think the supplier will also send you a DPDT to the USA, but the cost for
sh from Europe to USA are high. Norm, I think you will find also a DPDT in
your country. Maybe Radio Shack sells these ones.

I did something similar like Norm want to do. But I have bypassed the
polyswitch and not the in-line diode and the resistor. The diode and the
resistor are substituted totally in my K2 with a wire. You DON'T replace the
original SPDT for my modification.

I'm so sorry, but at the time I have some trouble with my internet provider,
so I have no access to my webspace. No, I have payed my bill (grin). I try
to describe my modification. Please read the posted mail (TNX Sverre) from
me and look at the K2 schematic. The both lowest pins on S1 (Power) have in
the original no contact to the rest of the circuit. The first wire goes from
the lowest pin on the left side of S1 to + on P3 (Aux). The second wire goes
from the lowest pin on the right side of S1 to the connection of C196 and
D10 (+ pin of J3 - the supply jack).

[Elecraft] Re: It Works, but Not Inst Message

2005-02-01 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Christian,

The issue, though, is that when I tap the menu button or the display
button, not inst will flash for a second before the menu is displayed.
All tests checked out after power up, except the keyer, since I don't
have a paddle. Let me add that at this point, I am missing one
pushbutton switch, S16, which I am waiting on a replacement for.

An not installed pushbutton is as good as an not switched pushbutton. No
problems with it.

First of all check the right orientation of the resistor pack RP1. I had
installed RP1 in the wrong direction and the results was very strange and
currios.

Then check the orientation of RP1 again. No, its no joke. Please do it.

Then check pins 3, 4 and 5 of the resistor pack RP1 on bottom of the PCB and
(!) on the top of the PCB. I think there is a solder bridge from pin 4 to 3
and 5. Pin 3 is the DISPLAY and pin 5 is the MENU and in the middle pin
4 is the ANT 1/2 which is not installed in your K2 at the time. U2 is an
multiplex IC, so sometimes the bridge suggested the MCU U6 a switched on
display button or sometimes a switched on menue button (to be governed by
the U2 multiplexer status) or all seems to be OK.

[Elecraft] Re: Excellent exchange rate ...

2004-11-22 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Eric,

Can anyone tell me if there has been a recent article on Elecraft
published in a European ham radio magazine that I may have
missed that could account for this?

1. The KX1 was published i.e. in the German ham radio magazin
   Funkamateur some month ago.
2. The English manual for the K2 is for some builder in the German
speaking area a problem, so the QRPproject (www.qrpproject.de) has
   translated these one.
3. The support for the K2, K1 and KX1 by the QRPproject in
Berlin/Germany with QRPeter DL2FI on the top is excellent.
4. Last but not least I think the publicity and practical knowledge of
more than 4500 builder around the world is pushing the elecraft rigs.

[Elecraft] Re: Mounting vertical antennas

2004-07-28 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Per,

I live in an apartment building in a large city, and I have decided that
basically the only realistic option (besides operating with stealthy
wire antennas) is to mount some form of vertical HF antenna ...

I had the same situation in my apartment. So I solved the problem with a
telescopic mast, which I can errect in a few minutes. The mast is attach with
small part from the building store on the railing of my balcony. No need to
drill a hole in any parts of the balcony and secure to attach. For more
informations please go to www.dk3red.homepage.t-online.de/en/s6.htm#ant1 on my
homepage.
