[Elecraft] K3S Transmit Audio Dropouts
I just received a new factory built K3S. It has a weird transmit audio dropout problem. On 6, 10 & 12 meters, there is a momentary loss of transmit audio every 15 seconds. Occurs with DATA A, SSB modes. CW is clean. Problem occurs with internal or external sound card and even with the built-in 2 tone test. The audio dropout is repeatable and precisely formed as two 10 ms dropouts separated by 15 ms and the pattern repeats every 15 seconds. Been working with Elecraft support for 3 days, but they are running out of ideas. It really looks like a firmware bug given that the timing and waveform characteristics are 100% repeatable and lack any randomness factor. But, why just on the three upper bands? Why are those bands unique? (besides the incorporation of Preamp 2). Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas? 73, Jim - N4ST __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Greetings Elecrafters, I have an older Sangean portable next to the bed that I sometimes listen to while I'm settling in for the evening. Frequently I'll tune in W1AW for a quick rough propagation indicator. Last evening 40M, which usually has a strong signal in the 9-10 PM Central timeframe, was much weaker than usual. 80 was also down, so I went to 20 expecting a weak signal at best as the band is usually shutting down by that long after sunset. I was surprised to hear a stronger signal there than on 40, and I could also hear W1AW on 17 and 15, which are usually dead by then this time of year. Is this possibly due to the current geomagnetic storm? (I'm still learning when it comes to solar/geomagnetic events and propagation.) [Elecraft] K3S 40M Sensitivity
So, I am a very casual participant in CW SS, usually just enough to get the participation pin. This was going to be interesting using my 2 week old K3S in the contest. I knew there had been some geomagnetic storming and even though the flux was high, I thought conditions could be iffy. As the Sun went down, I dropped down to 40M and was surprised that there wasn't much going on. In fact, there wasn't even a lot of atmospheric or manmade noise present. Checked the ATTN. Nope, it was off. RF Gain was at maximum and even tried Preamp 1, but it didn't seem to make much difference. My dipole was OK, because on my external power meter, power was going up the coax and not coming back. Just weird conditions I guess, but very slow going on 40M. Only made about 10 contacts in 40 minutes. Dropped on down to 80M and finished my contest effort that night. Next day, I decide to troubleshoot the 40M problem. Doh! 40M was set up to receive on the RX only antenna, and I don't have one connected. Glad it was an easy fix. Still made some 40M contacts, with no receive antenna! __ 73, Jim - N4ST __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Momentary no transmit
This drove me nuts when I first got my K3S. After a few days of testing and reconfigurations, it turned out to be a firmware problem that has existed for years. You will never notice it in SSB modes and the dropout occurs in the spaces for CW. A definite annoyance for those of us using digital modes with transmit times longer than 15 seconds. _ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of n...@comcast.net Sent: Sunday, November 22, 2015 20:54 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Momentary no transmit I discovered a problem with my K3, s/n 83xx. When I push the TUNE button it starts transmitting. After 15 seconds the K3 momentarily stops transmitting for about a millisecond, again at 30 seconds, again at 45 seconds, and again at 60 seconds and so on. The same result in both CW and DATA modes. If I reduce the power to under 12 watts, the K3 transmits continually. Has anyone experienced or duplicated this characteristic with their K3? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Momentary no transmit
Ken, This is firmware problem acknowledged by Elecraft, and previously discussed in this forum If you don't do digital comms, one of the easiest ways to see this is to put the rig in TEST mode and turn on the 2-tone test. Monitor the "transmit" signal with headphones and you will hear it drop out every 15 seconds. The dropout is just for a few milliseconds and sounds similar to a WWV "tick". There may be some variability in rigs, though I doubt it. When I was trouble shooting the problem with Elecraft support, they were unable to duplicate the problem with the rig they initially had on the bench. _ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ken K3IU Sent: Monday, November 23, 2015 03:44 To: n...@comcast.net; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Momentary no transmit G'morning, Frank: I just tried to duplicate what you are experiencing and was unsuccessful. Re: [Elecraft] : logging/k3s control program
Ed, It costs money and does more than just logging, but HRD would certainly cover the bases. The logbook covers all of the items you list, plus QSL S/R for eQSL and LoTW with dates sent and dates received. You can also log station setup (rig, antenna, power, etc.) as well as propagation mode (Es, tropo, meter scatter, aurora, etc.) You could put all of your QSOs in the same log and set the display filter to just display the band of interest. Or create separate logs per band if you really want to do that. __ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Edward R Cole Sent: Sunday, June 5, 2016 12:23 To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] : logging/k3s control program Barely dare ask, but is there a logging program suited for VHF logging? Grid is six digit locator. e.g. on 2m-eme I have 438 initial contacts (distinct callsigns). So far I run contests on paper with pencil. Eme and VHF contests normally are not so fast and furious as on HF. But a log that saves frequency, mode and date info while one enters time and call would be nice on contests, especially if it would detect a dupe. Be most handy tallying score and entering contest log. Cabrillo conversion would be nice for contests. Never paid too much attention until the last few months when I started using MSK144 on 6 Meters. Now I can see that on 6M my frequency is typically off by 50-70Hz from one day to the next and as much as 200 Hz if I let it go for a month or so. I figured that with a 0.5ppm (typical) KTCX03-1, it would only vary 25 Hz from day to day. Yes, I have adjusted REF CAL to beat with WWV. I've also performed the Norm/Rev CW tone adjustment and even the WSJTX frequency cal. ___ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Erik Basilier Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2017 17:42 To: 'Ian Kahn' ; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] 6m off-frequency Ian, I don't have any suggestions for a solution beyond what others have already mentioned, but as a side note I would like to discuss the concept of "off frequency". It seems to me that these days, on the HF bands that I frequent, more and more people tune SSB to where the displayed frequency is on an 500 Hz boundary, and their rigs have sufficient frequency accuracy that excellent copyability results without any further adjustment. This approach is much faster than tuning by listening for most natural voice, which for me takes a few moments. When I look over the shoulder of operators at Field Day, a surprising percentage of people take a long time trying to tune for natural voice, and still don't end up even close to correct tuning, so they should be helped even more by just "going for the zeroes". While I haven't used 6m recently, I would guess that the "zeroes" approach has become common there, although the average rig may not be as frequency-accurate there as it would be on the lower bands. Further to how to tune in other stations quickly, I just found another way to minimize SSB tuning time when scanning the bands. I configured the K3 to use the RIT knob to act as a coarse tuning knob (CONFIG: VFO OFS), with 500 Hz steps (CONFIG: VFO CRS). I also set the main tuning knob to a 500 Hz boundary. After setting things up this way, I use the P3 with a span of +- 25 kHz to identify the next SSB station up or down the band, then turn the RIT knob to put the passband over it. That puts me close enough that only one more 500 Hz step will tune to perfect voice clarity, and many times I will be tuned perfectly with no adjustment at all. Much, much faster than cranking the VFO knob, first to approximate frequency and then fine adjustment by listening. Occasionally it happens that the station is not on a 500 Hz boundary, and I have to turn on RIT and fine adjust by the RIT knob. Then I will usually soon hear that the station saying that he is using an older rig. That is becoming rather rare, though. After I am finished listening to the "off frequency" station, I just turn off the RIT, and the RIT knob lets me tune in the next station quickly using 500 Hz steps, while leaving the main tuning knob alone. Now tuning SSB stations is a bit like tuning FM "channels". I am not advocating "channelizing" the HF bands, as we should have the freedom to select our frequenciy according to the situation, but a lot of times, using a frequency ending in zeroes saves time and effort. 73, Erik K7TV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ian Kahn Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2017 8:46 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] 6m off-frequency All, I've been operating a little in the ARRL VHF contest this weekend, on 6m, and I'm having an interesting, and not good, experience. Bypassing the matching unit avoids inherent losses, but is it putting a strain on the finals? Can I just monitor the PA Temp as a guideline as long as I'm getting the desired output power? Re: [Elecraft] Compare: K3 to Collins S-line receiver
Love my K3S and certainly wouldn't trade it. But, if I could have an S-Line receiver AND the background noise environment of that era, I would trade. If you do, be sure to use a good dummy load connected direct to the radio with a known good short coax jumper. The fact you have 3 different power indicating devices which all indicate different power values, I'd say you have a problem with your power measuring system, for starters. Always when measuring power it is wise to use a known good 50 ohm dummy load. And just because the label says 50 ohms is no sign it is really 50 ohms. Measure it with an ohm meter. Power meters are voltage sensing circuits and the R value affects the voltage. Thus, as examples, 100 watts into 45 ohms is 67.08 volts, 100 watts into 50 ohms is 70.71 volts, and 100 watts into 55 ohms is 74.16 volts.Even with a 1:1 SWR most antennas have some reactance and power indications will vary, depending on the complex Z. It is not reliable to measure power with a reactive load such as an antenna. Re: [Elecraft] Silent power supply for a K3s
I don't know how common it is, but eHam lists several failures of the MFJ-4230MV supply that took out the rig attached to it. Looking at the reviews they are pretty much a 5 (love it) or a 0 (it smoked my rig when it failed). 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Richard Zalewski Sent: Sunday, June 9, 2019 19:53 To: Leroy Buller Cc: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Silent power supply for a K3s I did two of the Samlex and returned them both. Re: [Elecraft] Low Power Output on 160 and 6 meters
I see the same output powers on my K3S. Key down voltage is 13.4 volts on the VFO B display at maximum power out. Elecraft offered to upgrade my PA chain for $100, but I'm not concerned about ~1dB and is within spec for 6m anyway. Glad that diode is in there. I tested its function once. _ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Tuesday, June 25, 2019 08:31 To: EVERETT SHARP ; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Low Power Output on 160 and 6 meters Everett, What is your power supply voltage during transmit at 100 watts as measured with the Alternate VFO B display? With a solid 13.8 volt power supply voltage, you should see no lower than 12.7 volts (there is a diode drop inside the K3). If lower, check the connections in the power cable for tightness. The K3 power cable should run direct from the power supply. Rigrunner and other DC power distribution boxes can be reason for excessive voltage drop. You can increase the power supply voltage up to above 14 volts to help - do not exceed 15 volts. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/24/2019 6:51 PM, EVERETT SHARP via Elecraft wrote: > I have three K3S and over the week-end I connected each of them to my Bird watt meter, with a Dummy load. Re: [Elecraft] Audio Hum in TX Data Mode
Conrad, Can you turn off the other devices around your rig to see if any of them are creating the problem? I had a small portable electric heater that created hum in my K3S when plugged into the same outlet. Running the heater on an extension cord to an outlet across the room fixed the problem. Have you measured the AC ripple on the output of your DC power supply when you are key down? 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Conrad PA5Y Sent: Friday, September 27, 2019 17:27 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Audio Hum in TX Data Mode I put up a new 6m antenna mainly for EME and I was so looking forward to using my K3S. The RX is great, I run it in parallel with 2 other receivers and it works very well on EME. However try as I might I cannot get rid of some quite bad hum on the TX Audio. I am using USB and before you ask yes I have got a low impedance ground from the PC to the K3S although removing it makes absolutely no difference. What did make a difference was moving the radio away from sources of magnetic fields such as monitors. However I cannot get rid of it completely. It also increases or at least changes when I put my hands on the radio. I have a few other radios located nearby and close to a monitor, pc or PSU and they do not suffer from this at all. Is this a common problem, is it a bad ground in the audio path internally or magnetic coupling into an audio transformer? It is completely impractical for me to move my radios 10 feet from any magnetic fields. Short of wrapping the radio in mu metal I really do not seem to be able to fix this. Any ideas? I have read and understood and followed Jim K9YC's advice and this works perfectly for my other 3 radios. I am really at a loss. 73 Conrad PA5Y __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to hamsh...@n4st.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Uninterruptible Power Supply for K3S (power line arc noise)
I live in a rural area and the last mile of power lines were put in just for my house. I had a dead tree limb fall and hook across the power lines and when it got wet, it would arc and create horrendous electrical noise. I called the power company several times to come out and remove the limb but they didn't respond. I finally sent them an email saying that I would take care of it myself, because if I stood on the cab of my pickup I might be able to knock the limb off with a long stick. If that didn't work, I would shoot it off. They came the next morning and removed the limb. _____ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of John Stengrevics Sent: Monday, July 11, 2016 17:44 To: Mike K8CN Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Uninterruptible Power Supply for K3S (power line arc noise) Thanks to all for your very helpful comments & suggestions. Wayne, This would appear to be a problem unique to your configuration. I have been running WSJT-X for several versions with my K3S without seeing this problem. No problems when using Windows 7, 8 and 10 64-bit home versions on different PCs. Not sure what you are using. Re: [Elecraft] OT - 6 meter DX activity in sunspot low
I have only had a 6M capable rig for a few years, so I have not been through a sunspot low on 6M. Started out working 6M with my 20M dipole and was so encouraged that I put up a 3-el Yagi on my deck at about 15 feet with "arm strong" rotator. I primarily operate during the E Skip season, approximately from May 1st through Aug 1st, but have also made a couple dozen meteor scatter QSOs. Anyway, with a fairly low effort and marginal setup (except for the K3S of course), I have worked 10 countries, 40 states and 125 grid squares. 6M is known as the "magic band" because it can open magically and contacts across the continent can suddenly appear as 59 and be gone a few minutes later. And you can work meteor scatter with 100 watts and 3 elements regardless of sunspot count. You just have to be willing to get up in the morning when the meteors are at maximum whiz. __ 73, Jim - N4ST -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gary Smith Sent: Monday, August 22, 2016 12:33 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] OT - 6 meter DX activity in sunspot low I've made exactly five 6M contacts in the last 36 years, all of them a couple months ago during Field Day with my K3s. It piqued my interest as I have DXCC from 160 through 10 & this would offer a new challenge. I discovered DXEngineering has a 3 element, 6M add on that attaches to a tribander and gives decent gain. Considering my tribander is roof mounted on a ranch, I won't have a great antenna for 6 no matter how I slice it. Still, if there is something worthwhile I can do with 6M, I should. So my question is for those who have operated 6M for years and know how the band works during the lows of the sunspot cycle; is it like 17 & up where any DX openings are unobtanium, or does 6M behave differently at sunspot lows and DX openings are common?
