Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save
This is the solution. Bob showed me how to do it before the UNSAFE option existed AFAIK. I wasn’t aware it was a fixable problem beyond booting computer first and only powering radio after everything was stable, or setting TX TEST mode. All a pain. Do this. 73 Josh W6XU > On Jul 5, 2024, at 11:39 AM, Bob Wilson, N6TV wrote: > > Once you learn how to fix this unwanted keying issue in Windows, there's > little reason to ever use the default UNSAFE option of *CONFIG:PTT-KEY* > (tap '1' to toggle between "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE"). Re: [Elecraft] OT: The 4-track mind
Great. Years ago I knew a keyboard player Skip Van Winkle. Saw him play many times with Dallas Hodge & some of the Tower of Power guys, plus a host of other incredible players. Re: [Elecraft] A Good Headset For A K3
I’ve always favored very light headsets and CM500 are a perfect compromise for lightweight but decent sound isolation. I used to use super cheap-o featherweight computer sets which frankly work totally fine, but they set on the ear instead of covering so not as good for amp fans, etc. Heard really positive comments about RadioSport. Had an opportunity to use them at FD a few years ago. For me, they were clunky, heavy and totally uncomfortable. If at all possible, try before you buy. Or purchase where they have a good return policy. It’s a very personal decision. 73, Josh W6XU > On Aug 6, 2023, at 11:30 AM, Lou Laderman via Elecraft > wrote: > > I prefer RadioSport boom headsets. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 Line-Voltage Issues
Transformer core can saturate if line frequency is too low. Except I’d be certain KPA-500 uses the same transformer for export to 50Hz countries so your variations are fine. Many years ago when I was young & dumb discovered this the hard way. Customers would take products with 120v/60Hz line xfrs and run them in Europe 240V/50Hz with a step-down transformer. This discussion reminds me quite a few years back I was running a 756Pro and PW-1. Steve K6UM, a neighbor at the time, contacted me and said I had bad key clicks. I was glad he did. Re: [Elecraft] 2 meter PA
I had great success with an RF Concepts brick for quite a few years. Not made anymore but are for sale frequently. Receive preamp worked well too. I had the RFC2-417 which is supposed to be 170w out for 40w in, but got quite a lot of power driven by an HT. They have a few configs like RFC2-23 which is 2w in 30w out. Definitely recommended. 73 Josh W6XU Sent from my iPad > On Jun 1, 2021, at 8:33 AM, David Herring wrote: > > Can anyone recommend a good 2 meter PA for use with a KX3? > > I’m not looking to spend a king’s ransom, but I am leery of blindly buying an > “unknown off-shore branded” unit. > > Being paired with a KX3 it would need to be portable (or at least luggable) > and powered by 12 VDC. 30, 40, 50 watts or so would I think be quite > fine…just more than the 2 - 3 watts the KX3’s internal 2 meter module puts > out. > > Ideas, suggestions, recommendations welcomed... > > 73, > David - N5DCH > > > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to j...@voodoolab.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K2 rotary encoder
My K2 (SN: 4073) suffered a sudden problem yesterday. I didn't notice anything happening - one minute it was working normally and the next the VFO knob stopped working. All other functions appear to be working normally, but the rotary encoder is disabled. If I ground the V- pin (via 100 ohm resistor) the encoder comes to life and functions normally. I have verified good continuity between encoder V- and pin 14 of U3. In the manual it says that the MCU can disable the encoder under certain operating conditions. What might those conditions be? One thought I have is that the MCU is disabling it for some reason. My current plan is to try replacing U3. All other functions of U3 appear to be working. Any troubleshooting advice would be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Ham Radio near high voltage power lines?
If it’s something a lineman can fix, that’s easy and you’re home free. In my case the problems were usually either old style insulators, or just an ancient pole that needs to be rebuilt. That requires at least a 2-man crew so work needs to be scheduled. Getting on the schedule can drag out. You’re 100% right, a PUC complaint will get things moving. I didn’t find the noise guy to be super helpful. Just as easy for me to ID the pole and have a lineman write it up. They were already aware which hardware was old junk. I think my noise/comm guy retired. Maybe same guy you had. 73 Josh W6XU Sent from my iPad > On Apr 27, 2021, at 11:59 AM, Ken K6MR wrote: > > “Just be glad all you guys checking power lines don't live in CA with PG” > > It took me several years to finally crack the bureaucracy at PG The > closer you get to the repair techs/linemen, the better it gets. I have a 9700 and since it looks nearly identical to 7300 assume the UI is similar. Intuitive? Not at all. K3 has lots of buried items but they are easy to find and mostly set once & forget. Re: [Elecraft] my KPA1500 and 160M
No. At low frequencies hysteresis loss dominates. Soft ferrites have high resistivity. Eddy currents increase with frequency but 160m is still fairly low. In SMPS transformer design we look at applied volt*seconds. When the applied v*s goes up, as would be the case with high SWR, you push further out the BH curve increasing hysteresis loss. With each cycle, the area inside the BH curve determines the loss (heating). As you approach the horizontal part of the curve (saturation), inductance collapses and the winding looks like a short. Same if core hits Curie temp then mag domains can no longer be aligned. Soft ferrites are not permanent magnets, they are NOT in fixed alignment. Magnetic domains are flopping around with the applied field. Hope this clarifies something. I like combining them. And update to a lightweight switching power supply. Should be less expensive to produce and eliminates dealing with 120 vs 230, transformer taps, voltage sag under load. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 power per frequency bin
What feature(s) of KPA1500 would you want in KPA500? Sincere question. I’m not familiar with the differences other than hardware. Built in tuner, separate light weight switching PS, legal limit power. With my antennas I don’t see a big enough power difference across the band with KPA500. Power could vary by 20% (it doesn’t) and its still <1dB, not a big deal on HF. 450-550W the amp doesn’t care. With my big amp it’s a problem when I want to set for 1.5kW then QSY and it’s 1.6+kW... not good. 73 Josh W6XU Sent from my mobile device > On Jun 4, 2020, at 12:20 PM, hawley, charles j jr > wrote: > > So...is it possible that the KPA500 could ever be upgraded or be a KPA500A > to be as capable as the KPA1500? > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] OT Powerline Wifi extenders
The Ubiquity product uses a little power supply which includes the injector. The connections are AC line, and ethernet in/out. So to replace the power supply you’ve got a bit more of a project. Buy them from amazon. Test for noise. Return if necessary and get something else! Much easier than re-engineering a bad design. Re: [Elecraft] OT Powerline Wifi extenders
I ran 50’ CAT5 with POE to the propane tank where the ubiquity link radio was hung. That’s maybe 80-90’ from my 6m EME array and heard nothing. The CAT5 was due north so not a direction the array was ever pointed and I didn’t go looking for trouble! But I’m pretty quiet, on a good day with some elevation radio is at S0 with preamp on. No idea how consistent their power adapters are or if they’ve changed suppliers. 73 Josh W6XU Sent from my mobile device > On Oct 22, 2019, at 12:23 PM, Jim Brown wrote: > > On 10/22/2019 11:57 AM, Bill Steffey wrote: > Hi Bill, > > I see that these units use Poe for power. Re: [Elecraft] OT Powerline Wifi extenders
I had great luck with a pair of ubiquity bullets. They were 5.4GHz with built in directional antennas. Great range and speed. My neighbor’s DSL was out a few days so I ziptied one to a propane tank pointing at his house about 150’ away. Not much obstruction though. He said it was much faster than his DSL! Also had great success with an Engenius AP. It had 2 external antenna ports for diversity. I used the supplied vertical on one to connect near it, and a patch antenna pointed out a window to another building. Nice thing about Engenius is this ran fairly high power, 1W radio worked extremely well with the directional antenna. 73, Josh W6XU Sent from my mobile device > On Oct 22, 2019, at 11:57 AM, Bill Steffey wrote: > > to extend your connection do look at Ubiquiti products They are available > worldwide. > > > I currently employ over 20 devices over a three mile area to get Ethernet ( > broadband) to my remote location. > > Your point to point should work with 2 devices for under 100$ each in the > US... > > Ubiquiti LiteBeam AC Gen2 LBE-5AC-Gen2 IEEE 802.11ac 450 Mbit/s Wireless > BRIDGE > > AND THESE ARE VERY FAST. > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Unless you’re operating portable with extreme equipment limitations, I can’t imagine why you’d want your radio’s computer to run contest logging software. Elecraft’s reply is exactly accurate. We are governed by FCC part 97. Amateur Service only requires certification for amplifiers. Read it!! Oh come on. Now you're just making things up. I just had some structural brackets made. They had 18 holes, laser cut and bent from 3/8" thick 304 stainless. They were $45 ea for 13 pcs. Supplier did the CAD for me from my pencil sketch. Took him less than 10 minutes, no extra charge. A little difficult to extrapolate from that example, other than to note the very low volume, it's expensive material and slow to cut. 73 Josh W6XU Sent from my mobile device > On Dec 22, 2018, at 7:03 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > > Josh, > > I may not be up to speed, but there are startup costs for anything. Re: [Elecraft] K2 100 Tuner question
Hi Don, Sounds like you're not up to speed on 21st century sheet metal fabrication. Small volume parts like this would be cut on a laser and bent with a CNC press brake. The only setup is loading the programs and there is no tooling. If someone draws the parts using a CAD program like Solid Edge, the resulting 3D models can be utilized directly by the vendor. Even small job shops have laser cutting ability, especially for small gauge material like this. Hard tooling would only be used in high volume (thousands at least) for a very cost sensitive project. I'm not familiar with methods prior to the '80s, but even back then this would be done on a turret punch press. You'd only need tools for oddball shapes the vendor didn't have, and those are fairly inexpensive. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Audio settings
I have the new synth boards, since that was clearly worthwhile. Already have outboard preamp & don't care about USB since at this point seems like I've accumulated a herd of USB/RS232 converters that work fine, plus Tascam audio interface. I'll have to check DSP board rev. Was there a specific serial number for that changeover? Re: [Elecraft] Breakers for KPA1500
I take what code requires as the minimum wire gauge. For shorter runs it's fine. But measure the run length, multiply by 2 (two wires) and calculate IR voltage drop. It's not a big expense when you're installing to use 10 instead of 12 awg if it would make a noticeable difference. Seems like it wouldn't need to be said... but never let them cheap out and use aluminum wire. I actually had an electrician try that for a bigger gauge run. Fortunately I noticed before it was enclosed. Cut it out of the wall and left it coiled for him with a friendly :) note. 73 Josh W6XU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
