[Elecraft] W1 Questions
I'm getting ready to build my W1 SWR/Watt meter. Before I start, are things I should consider. Enclosure? Mounting BNC off-board? External power? COM port mounting? Inquiring minds want to know. [Elecraft] RE: A Bad Thing Happened To My K2 - Update 10/4/2008
I removed K12 from the radio and re-wound L25 because one wire broke. Removing the relay using solder wick was not successful so I used a heat gun to melt the solder on all pads at once. I used aluminum foil to shield the K2 from the heat gun. I cut an opening in the aluminum foil a bit larger than the relay and put it over the PCB exposing only the pads for the relay. I applied only enough heat to see the pads go wet and then used needle-nose pliers to pluck the relay off. I then cleaned up the pads with solder wick which left the holes nice and clean. I've contacted Elecraft for the replacement relay and should have it in a few days. I broke a wire on L25 and had to re-wind it and install it again. I also took the time to install the T/R circuit from Tom N0SS. Now I can use my K2 to drive my AL-811H to a little over 300w with about 10w drive without having to use a foot switch. After replacing K12, my next project on the K2 is to install the KAF2 audio filter board. Then I will have all options except the KPA/100, DSP and 60m modules. I guess at some point I should upgrade S/N 0539 to Revision B. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Here is some more information resulting from your suggestions. I have no measurable RF output on 40m or any meaningful RX on 40m. RE: [Elecraft] Where have all the K2s gone...
K2 S/N 0539 is doing very well. I use it everyday and have put very few modifications into it. I've done some dumb things with it which have caused me to replace the finals a few times and the driver once. I've got a small fortune in it with all but the 60m option in place (notice I did not say K2/100, that's not a K2). It is the second most expensive item in my shack, second only to my TS-850S/AT which competes very aggressively with the K2 on receive. A K3? Not in my future, way too much money for casual operating. I'm glad Elecraft has found a couple of thousand hams willing to part with a major chunk of change for a K3, but I'm priced out of the market. I hope they continue their great success. Oh, and the Elecraft amplifiers are also out of the question pricewise, too. FW: [Elecraft] Calling the K3 USERS GROUP on SSB
Por Que? I never thought I would see the day when Elecraft aficionados would result to segregation and elitism, but I was wrong. Just as is this notion that non Elecraft K3 operators are not welcome on the net. I am glad Kevin Rock did not take this tact when starting the ECN. I've checked in many times with a non-Elecraft rig. I don't know about anybody else, but this leaves a BAD taste in my mouth. Thanks for letting me know where you stand. [Elecraft] RE: [QRP-L] Can a R5 vertical be ground mounted??
You bet an R5 can be ground mounted. However, Cushcraft has recommended it be 4 to 6 feet above ground. You do, however, need to consider the RF exposure limits as outlined by the FCC. Remember, you have to consider whether the site is controlled (not accessible by the average person) or uncontrolled (accessible by the average person). Accessible means can they get near the radiating portion of the antenna. I have a Cushcraft R-7000 vertical mounted 8 feet above ground in an area of my lot that is fenced and locked (controlled area). RE: [Elecraft] restrictive CQs? SKCC, Fists etc. - protocol on who we can play with
As both a FISTS and SKCC member, I will tell you while I call CQ FISTS or CQ SKCC and am looking for other members with which to exchange info, I always welcome a non member QSO. To that point, I have paused during a sprint or contest to chat with a non member. It does several things, it portrays a good example for members of the club if we take the time to be courteous to non members and have a QSO, albeit short, but polite. It allows me to make a new friend and maybe bring a new member into our fold. In my book, it is just the right thing to do. For me, sprints and contest are not about winning or placing, it is about having fun, making contacts, and meeting new friends. So if you ever hear me calling CQ FISTS or CQ SKCC or CQ SKS, do not hesitate to call me. SKCC,Fists etc. - protocol on who we can play with Well, I just gotta ask. It really seems a lot of the CQs I hear are CQ FISTS and CQ SKCC. Are these persons bothered if I reply and just want a QSO/rag chew/contact and don't need their number and won't send one in return - or don't favour a hand key? I just don't see the sense in sending numbers - and I really don't need to collect them. That's OK for those that do... but to not 'accept' those who don't? And the straight key guys do they really only want to have contacts with someone enamoured of the straight key. I have a number of old hand keys... they look nice, but my keyer and paddle are easier on the arm that has had a lot of jolts from carpentry/bicycle riding/motorcycle throttling I know I can pass them by I guess - but gee, I want to have a contact, plain and simple and it seems so many possible operator calls are restricting themselves to someone with a number or old fashioned key. Can't we just agree to all talk and THEN say, oh by the way I have a nice old key here I am using, or I have a number. Or maybe it should be - CQ FISTS? or CQ SK? - which is to say... I have a number if you want one but otherwise call me anyhow... or I use an old key and won't send all that fast with it (nice if you are afraid to have to QRS the fellow). Anyhow, not much of a rant as a query on protocols of calling and answering, as well as just wanting to be able to work a lot of fellows on the radio. Otherwise, I guess I will just have to let them alone in their respective sandboxes and go play with those who feel more open (wherever and whenever). I do realize they DO have their calling frequencies... but I am hearing more broadly than that. Seems to me to be a weird imbalance. On the other hand my copying of numbers is getting good from 'reading the mail' on those QSOs for practice :) tnx Brian Toronto VE3VAW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Conception of a K2
John, Welcome to the Elecraft ranks. I know you will enjoy building the K2 and enjoy operating it even more. I built my K2 S/N in 1998 and have used it a lot, mostly portable. If you are even contemplating adding modules to it, get the rework eliminators. Some of the add-in modules require the removal of components. With the rework eliminators, those components go on plug-in boards that are "place holders" for the add-in modules, so when you are ready to install an add-in, you simply unplug the rework eliminator and plug in the add-in module. The parts to be removed are located on the rework eliminator. Forty was weak with QSB. Take your pick :) However, some of the new procedure worked. Hail signs made it easy to copy folks first time (if the QSB did not eat you up first). But calling by the numbers needs a little revision. I think I will name the five areas instead. How about 1, 2, 3 as NE; 4 as SE; 8, 9 as Lakes (Great Lakes); 0, 5 as Central; and 6, 7 as West. The numbers did not seem to translate well. But it did break the pileup a little at first. I did have a few relays and a number of folks listening along. Thank you. Now for better propagation so the procedures are necessary :) It was nice to hear KA6LAF, Jeff Kinzli. You may have followed his build on the Reflector. Well, I happened to be his first (and second) contact this evening with his brand spanking new rig! Woo Hoo! K2 number 5945 is alive and well propagating signals from Santa Cruz to a mountain north of Buxton, Oregon. There was QSB, everyone seemed to have their share on 40, but I copied his fine fist as well as my feeble brain could handle. I should not carry so much wood, eat so much dinner, and then expect to stay coherent during the second net! But, the baked chicken and rice pilaf with a green salad and side dishes was quite good ;) Makes me sleepy though. Minnesota seems stuck in a deep freeze. I did not hear from W0CZ so I cannot compare his temperature with that of Bruce. I had temperatures in the lower 50s as I was working this morning. By noon the bugs were hatching out and during the second net there were some female carpenter ants flying around my head and landing on the paddles. They were distracting. Hopefully they will not hole up in the opening caused by the flying hemlock tree. Willie,KH6NO/W7, was back tonight on both 20 and 40 meters. One of them is the audio modification. That may help provide more gain so I can dig a little deeper. I know I missed a few this evening who were well below the noise. Once I get my trees trimmed and cleared I will teach my nephew how to raise antennas. Then I can get one higher and get up a few optional antennas to use to change my takeoff angle and coverage areas. I know I will sleep well tonight. This morning was the first time in two weeks I did not have my alarm set for 6 AM. I slept until a meowing sound woke me up instead of the alarm ringing. When Sam is hungry he is not shy about letting the world know of his problem! Being old and deaf does not help me sleep. He is nice to have around though; keeps me active and out of bed ;) There may be errors in the above list. Please send me fills and corrections. If you have any ideas what to name the various parts of the continent please send those along too. NE and SE are rather boring compared to Lakes, Central, and West. [Elecraft] My K2 In The ARRL 10 Meter Contest
I had a blast working the 2006 ARRL 10 meter contest with my K2. It is my favorite contest of the year. Unfortunately I was not able to devote the entire weekend to working the contest so I had to get little pieces of time where I could. Friday evening was exciting as we had QSOs until after 0500z. Saturday was much less active when I had operating time and Sunday I managed only 2 QSOs. In total I had 41 QSOs for a total of 2700 points, all working CW at 5w from my K2. -- Mark, KJ7BS Glendale, AZ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 keeps on keepin' on
Lloyd, You are suffering from Elecraftitis. Don't worry, it's not fatal, but can be annoying to others, similar to snoring. The symptoms are much as you describe and suffers often are left with a feeling of uphoria and wonderment. Some can even be found wonder aimlessly mumbling "big MOJO, MOJO good'. There is no known cure, but there are lots of equpment manufacturers who are hard at work to find a cure for the afflicted and their sagging sales. Have hope, you are not alone. [Elecraft] Did You Know.....
Did you know your K2 has a squelch? I installed the KIO2 module in my K2 and proceded to connect it to my laptop running Ham Radio Deluxe. I'm impressed with the K2 interface in HRD. All the controls are represented either in buttons or sliders and band changes are a ckick away. I found a strange slider control that is has no corresponding front panel control on the K2, SQUELCH. I adjusted this slider and low and behold, there is squelch in the K2! I'm not sure what good squelch is when operating CW or SSB, but it is there. [Elecraft] Major Solar Flare - X9 Class
MAJOR SOLAR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites detected a powerful X-class solar flare this morning, Dec. 5th, at 10:35 Universal Time. The source: big, new sunspot 929, which is emerging over the Sun's eastern limb. Because of the sunspot's position near the limb, this flare was not Earth-directed. Future eruptions could be, however, because the Sun's spin is turning the spot toward Earth. Sunspot 929 will be visible for the next two weeks as it glides across the solar disk. Bill et al, A few years ago Bob Hightower, NK7M,s old a mic preamp kit designed . The printed circuit board was small and fit inside the K2 or some microphones. I got one and have had good results from it. I use the Kenwood stock hand microphone for the TS-850S. I picked the mic up on ebay for $20. The links to Bob's preamp kit are not valid. I compared a Yeasu FT-890 to the K2/100. I noticed there were a few stations that I called and called on the K2, that were then workable in one or two calls after switching over to the FT-890. I did some power checks, and found that in CW mode, the K2 was the same, if not slightly more power (reading on the same meter, same antenna, using an A/B switch) But on SSB, the voice peaks of the K2 are 25-30% lower than those of the FT-890. I am using dynamic mikes on both radios... on the K2 it's a Yaesu MH-31 Mic. I also used this mic on both radios and noted voice power peaks almost twice that of the K2 (70 w vs 40w). My K2 is set for SSBA of 3, and SSBC of 3-1. My KSB2 firmware is 1.07 I have seen a few references to mods on the KSB2, including swapping resistors to increase mic gain. I have also seen references that they should not be done on K2/100 units. Are there any internal mic gain mods that can be used on the KSB2 in a K2/100? Is there anything else I can do short of the external mic amp? I also notice that sometimes I get full power on the first "letter", sometimes it starts lower on "whiskey 1" and bumps up on "papa alpha" -- anyone else seen this on the K2/100? Re: [Elecraft] Need advice on the Iambic key
I agree with Tom. "NO...! TAKE IT OUT OF TEST MODE NOW!!! NOW is the time to be OPERATING! GET ON THE AIR and USE your abilities... use the J-38 as a starting point... you can probably get up to 18-20 WPM with it yet, all the while improving your abilities to copy. " There is simply NO better method to improve both your sending and receiving skill than to operate on the air, plus it's fun. Any CW op worth their salt will always slow down to your sending speed (assuming most can copy what they can send, so don't send faster than you can copy). If you run across a CW op that will not slow down, say no thank you and move on. We all had horrible fists at one time and were slow. I will never forget one of my first CW QSOs. as a new Technician with Morse code, that laster over an hour. Later I discovered the ham that listened to my shakey and poor fist was an Extra class operator. That made an impression on me and to this day I do my best to "pay it forward" when I hear the slow unsteady fist of a new CW op. Re: [Elecraft] Slow Code Watering Holes? QRS-CW & FISTS
The netschedule one is new to me, but here are my suggestions. Join the FISTS CW club http://www.fists.org (The International Morse Preservation Society). Signup for their "Code Buddy" program, which pairs you with an experienced CW operator to help you (1) improve operating skill, (2) improve your fist, and (3) improve your copy speed. This is a very social group with lots of operating activities. FISTS members hangout around 3.558, 7.058, 10.118, 14.058, 18.085, 21.058, 24.895, and 28.058 MHz. Listen for CQ FISTS. QRS-CW is a Yahoo Groups list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QRS-CW/ where QRS CW like-minded individuals can meet and share what works for them, make schedules, and help each other. I found a list of QRS CW watering holes and the end in .050 (7.050, 14.050, 21.050, and 28.050) of each band. Listen for them, you can't miss them, they are the slower CW operators. Congratulations for getting on the air, slow CW and all. I give you lots of credit for even trying CW. If you want a slow QSO or just practice, I will gladly schedule something with you, just ask. If it makes you feel any better, I had trouble copying the speed deamons at field day, too. I'm good to about 22 WPM, but really have to work at it and I can't do it for long periods of time. BTW: My 79 year-young father-in-law who wears hearing aids has learned morse well enough to copy everything I send at about 7 WPM. He will be taking his code test in the next few weeks. RE: [Elecraft] Wha'ts Wrong With Our Radios (WAS:NewProducts, Building Demo, T-Shirts, Amp and More.)
Ron, Interesting take on the flat pannel rigs. I've long wanted to mount my Kenwood TS-850S/AT to that the controls are flush with the desktop, but that put too much below the desk for knees, little hands, and pets to clobber. As an alternative, mounting the controls so they are at a 45 degree angle of greater for easy visibility. Again too much sticking below the desk and it would have to be too close to the front edge to accommodate for the depth of the rig. My IC-706MKIIG is about as close to this as I can get, but you are right, small controls, especially for aging eyes. The K2 front pannel is easily remoted and I've seen a few K2s mobile with the front remoted. Very slick. Now if I can only get my K2 transmitting again, I would be in business. Mark Saunders, KJ7BS Glendale, AZ Ron D'Eau Claire <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: = What I don't understand is why we keep putting small gear in little rectangular boxes. We need a human sized panel for human sized knobs and buttons but that doesn't mean we need a BIG rig! Indeed, it can be very small and friendly on modern desks. Look at a modern "flat panel" computer or TV display. Why not a desk-top rig that is built like a thick version of one of those? Big and relatively thin? Stand it on a "foot" like the displays. Heatsink on the back, if needed, along with necessary connectors, and lots of space for controls on the front. The large panel area would allow the layout of the circuits to follow a logical path, with controls closely associated with the circuits they're associated with. If there's a really heavy part, like a big heat sink for the finals, put it down at the bottom at the "foot". You want the antenna connectors down there anyway. And no multiple layers of tightly packed PC boards to wade through when troubleshooting either! That's nothing new. It's how radios were built in the 1920's, 30's and at least through the 50's. Remember seeing pictures of those huge, long 1920-vintage broadcast-band receivers with a whole row of knobs across the front? Those were tuned-radio-frequency sets with a whole row of tubes amplifying the signal before it was detected (turned into audio). Each knob adjusted the tuning of the amplifier behind it. Parts were big, so the cabinet had to be pretty deep, but the first step in the design was to lay out the controls so they were close to the associated circuits. As superhets took over, fewer controls were needed to tune R.F. amplifiers and more controls were needed for the I.F. and audio stages, but the same basic layout remained, progressing from the antenna to the audio output. The form factor was constrained by the front panel and the unit was only as deep as needed by the bulk of the parts used. Smaller sets were often built right on the back of the "front panel" with no "chassis" at all, just a box to hold the front panel vertical and keep inquisitive fingers from breaking tubes or getting into high voltages. The logical evolution would have been for those to get thinner and thinner until modern solid state radios were simply a thick "front panel". Instead we kept the old rectangular form factor and reduced the size of the front panel and the controls! Wayne took a big step in the direction I'm suggesting with the KX1, putting the controls on the top of the box instead of the "front". The original rig had one main PCB behind the panel with the controls laid out near the associated circuits. Picture a 100 watt KX1 tilted up at a 45 degree angle with a base and having the same thickness but a panel size of, say, 14x18 inches (35X45 cm) with suitable knobs and meters... Ah... Meters...but that's another story... Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. WHERE WAS THE EAST COAST??? I heard NO(!) signals from anyone from the east... and as it turned out, only a few from the west... but at least a few nonetheless. It was good to have Mark, KJ7BS, check in on both bands, unfortunately, each time he sent his K2 serial number he went into a DEEP fade (both bands)... kinda like the Gods didn't want me to copy it... heheh! I hope I managed to pull it thru correctly. I was startled to hear Wayne, N6KR, check in during the 20M net. Good sigs, Wayne. But of course, we'd have expected nothing less! Interesting call Fred, K5QLF, holds... definitely NOT a QLF fist though! I checked in all stations I was able to hear. If you attempted to check in and I did not acknowledge you, I sincerely apologize... the bands were relatively quiet and had I heard ANYTHING resembling a calling signal, I'd have attempted to pull your through. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Microphones
I put the hand microphone from my Kenwood TS-850S/AT on my K2 and it works fine and I've had good audo reports. The K2 requires a low impedence microphone and the TS-850S/AT requires a 500 or 600 ohm (can't remember which) impedence microphone. The K2 uses the same 8-pin connector as the Kenwood, so I thought this a good match. I've since purchased a second Kenwood hand microphone, on eBay, so I have one for each radio. Re: Re: [Elecraft] K1 on 80/40m Novice bands?
I make a habbit to cruise the Novice sub-bands looking for calls to work. I call CQ for about 5 minutes on several frequencies in each sub-band. I rarely get any response on 80M, maybe 1 a week, but 40m produces at least 1 each evening. I have not found any stations working in the Novice sub-band on 15M since July. I can't even find non-Novice stations working in the CW sub-band on 10m so forget that until the sun spot cycle picks up again. I think 40m would be a much better choice. At least there is activity there. If your new ham wants to work someone for practice, shoot me an email and we will schedule some sessiona. I will gladly give him practice. They must be for some kind of analog connection, what I'm not sure. Looking at the schematic it looks like some type of input connector. Re: Re: [Elecraft] RE:K7C
Well, I may have been one of those "poor" operators answering on the calling frequency, but only because I had no idea K7C was working split. Once I learned split operation was in use, I found, with a lot of work, where K7C was listening. My QRP signal went unanswered, too. I even tried with 100 watts and could not make a contact. The cacophony was deafening and went on well after K7C acknowledged the answering station. I will keep trying. Maybe as time goes on, the madness will subside and we can make a contact. Right now, it is like a feeding frenzy. Mark Saunders, KJ7BS Glendale, AZ <><><><><><><><><><> FISTS # 2972 Elecraft K2 S/N 539 <><><><><><><><><><> If it aint fun, you aint doing it right. The pileups are horrendous. The lids are out in tremendous force. I agree with you. I get mad as hell at ops who will continue to send their callsign, even when the DX station has acknowledged a different station. And they will do it right on top of the station acknowledged! Or, when the DX station acknowledges part of a call, like "W5?", but some klutz W9 keeps sending his call! But most of these pile-ups are pure chaos. I don't have much hope that they will every be run in an orderly and courteous manner. There are just too many folks out there who are at least completely oblivious to the process, if not so arrogant they ignore common courtesy. I must say though, that I haven't been all that impressed with at least one or two of the K7C ops. A couple of times on 40 meters I heard K7C working stations, and obviously listening "up", but not saying so! This really created a mess! Some stations kept calling on his sending frequency, then others would chime in with "up", but a minute later it was chaos again on the sending frequency. On top of that, there were stations calling K7C as much as 10 khz up, and he was acknowledging them! That chews up a bunch of bandwidth. It took me forever to figure out where he was listening. Maybe the op at K7C was doing this on purpose to spread callers out, but I don't agree with the process. He should say "up" at least, and give the amount, like "up 1", or "up 4". Callers will naturally spread out around this figure, usually between the sending frequency and the listening figure given, but not all over the band! Personally, I think "up 4" is plenty of bandwidth for any DX operation. If you can't pick stations out in that range, you have a receiving problem--or an operator problem! And I think the DX stations should give his call at least every 3rd or 4th qso. Some don't give it for really long periods of time, and that creates all kinds of confusion on the sending frequency with inquiries about who the heck it is, etc. So, yes there are a bunch of "lids" out there. But you can't call some guy a lid if he doesn't have a reasonable amount of information to ignore! It's too bad these operations don't follow a more organized and standardized procedure. Probably never happen, but it sure would eliminate as least some of the confusion that seems to occur every time. One last thought. If somebody keeps calling on the "sending" frequency when the DX station is actually listening "up", it's o.k. to tell him "up", and if you know how many, tell him that too. But don't call him a "lid", even if he is acting like one--most of these occurrances are accidental (maybe he forgot to hit the "split" button--I've done that more than once), but the real "lid" will only be encouraged to continue in retribution. After all, "lids" don't get that way by being responsive to strong direction! Dave W7AQK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
