Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Hex Key worth?

If it was binary it would be worth a lot more,  and work with the Elecraft

Id be afraid of it casting a spell on my radio,  not going to put a Hex

Re: [Elecraft] Progressive Tuning Rate

2018-01-02 Thread Merv Schweigert via Elecraft

Set the parameters and use the rate button,  push go fast, push go slow,
you an set how fast or slow you wish to go.

About the only thing I like about using my Drake R4C over my K3S is that I can
cover a lot of band with a couple of twists of the Drake's tuning knob, at
25KHz per rotation. However, it's tough to clarify SSB at that rate, though
it's actually not too fast for CW for me.

I'd love to see the K3S have a progressive tuning rate, with adjustable
parameters - acceleration and max rate. Acceleration would set how fast the
progressive tuning rate advances; max rate would set the absolute max tuning
rate.

Re: [Elecraft] filters

2017-12-31 Thread Merv Schweigert via Elecraft
There is a newer 200HZ filter with more poles and does a great job in
contest situations,

I have a FT-1000D with a Inrad 125hz filter in 455khz cascaded with a
250HZ in the wide IF,
and the 1000D cannot hold a candle to a K3 skirt selectivity,   that is
the one major reason
I bought the K3 after using one,  the difference in skirt selectivity
was so apparent it was
not even a question,   I had several ft-1000D and none of them were even
close,

If your ears cant hear the difference try measuring it.
Plus the 1000D filters cause IMD up the wazoo,  and by the way I also
had the Inrad roofing

filter in the 1000D,  so actually 3 cascaded.

Merv K9FD

Now, my previous rig, an FT-1000D, which is inferior to the K3 in
almost every other way, actually has better skirt rejection on CW, but
that's with cascaded crystal filters, both of either 500 or 250 Hz
bandwidth.  I'm not sure that's because of an inherent limitation of
the K3 DSP, or just the filter algorithm chosen (perhaps to limit
latency?).

Re: [Elecraft] [DETECTED AS SPAM] Re: 630M

2017-09-22 Thread Merv Schweigert via Elecraft
Signals have been CW levels, but as you may not realize not being on
the air for ?? years
Ed, part 5 license to ham contacts are not allowed, so it has to be
WSPR reports.
CW will come along the 15th of next month when waiting time is up for
those who applied

to the UTC.
CW is done almost daily between part 5 stations on the mainland, and FT
modes all the time.

I get a kick out of "experts" that talk about 630M like they operate
there, checked and some that
are talking have not been on the band in more than 5 years. they are
just puffing.
The ARRL experimental group only has a couple at most operational, I
see at most two or three

of them. Most of the work has been done by part 5 grants.

How many even know that the ON4KST chat rooms has a dedicated chat room
for 630M ??

Stop in there and see what happening on the band.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6 WH2XCR

Roger,

I'm guessing you are commenting on the DX contact between VK4YM and
WG2XXM using WSPR?

Most likely signal levels were way below noise for CW.

WSPR was designed to test propagation like a beacon and really isn't
well suited to making contacts but it does get thru with a minimum of
signal.

But CW has been mainstay on 630m and likely will remain so. It is
simple and effective requiring no computer skills. During the period
the ARRL Experimental Group tested operating on 600m and later on
630m, QRSS was used for making longer weak-signal contacts. "Reading"
the super-slow CW was aided by computer display.

Other digital modes have been investigated and generally work better
with weak-signals beyond the 250-300 mile limit of ground-wave. I
suspect conversational psk-31 will get used quite a bit, where new
digital modes like FT8 will be used to make simple DX contacts with
minimal exchange of callsign and signal reports.

But CW is not dead on 630m. Just more choices which may be more
effective. By and large many operators in the Experimental Group were
prior ship CW operators.

Yes, there is the WSPR map site, where all activity for WSPR is listed.

http://wsprnet.org/drupal/wsprnet/map

And also a great daily report and blog by John WB5NJD

http://njdtechnologies.net/category/630-meter-daily-reports/

You can see there are 80 to 90 people active almost daily, many VK, ZL, JA
Many EU stations as well. Its about the time of the year for EU to start
being copied on the east coast, EU made it all the way to AZ last season.
And with lower sunspot numbers propagation should improve over the
next few years.

Lots of info on antennas, and 630m subjects on the NJD website, also has
some 136KHZ info there as well.

Or publish a macro that could be used with PF1 or PF2 to engage

I am considering upgrading my station in the near future and am interested
in the control possibilities of the KPA 1500.

I currently use an AH-4 for remote tuning of a non resonant vertical
dipole
that I use on the upper bands, and have on order a Stockcorner JC-4s
kilowatt remote tuner to replace the AH-4.

To the topic here, I am interested in the mention of a connection for the
AH-4 on the KPA 1500 and and what it's use would be given the mismatch of
the power ratings of the two devices?

Now on to the station setup I can imagine...

It would be useful in my station setup if the KPA 1500 could sense a
frequency change and initiate a 10-20 watt tune cycle with the JC-4s
before
going back to online status. Ideally the KPA 1500 could do this without
communication with the exciter making that interface universal.

Alternately, with the K3(s), any tune initiation from the transceiver
could
cause the KPA 1500 to initiate a tune cycle with the JC-4s with the KPA
1500 in bypass.

Or even more ideally, Elecraft comes out with a fully integrated remote
tuner to match the KPA 1500 for those of us who need the wider matching
range in our urban antenna restricted situations.

A wide range tuner in the shack would also work, but then you would only
want to do that with some very low loss coax like 7/8 Heliax.

Thanks for the opportunity to give input and for the example you set as a
company.

Dave is correct, just read a little on CEE or Ufer grounds, perhaps
the idea of exploding bases comes

from a statement about Ufer grounds,

A disadvantage of Ufer grounds is that the moisture in the concrete can
flash into steam during a lightning strike or similar high energy fault

building foundation.^

considerations behind a Ufer ground shouldn't be making contributions

Sorry for the ire displayed by me here, but this stupid topic keeps
surfacing year after year in ham radio circles ... and specifically
this forum ... without the least bit of thoughtful consideration
behind it. I'm tired of our hobby, supposedly a technically based

demonstrably wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] Dummy loads for dummies

2016-12-27 Thread Merv Schweigert via Elecraft

They make similar resistors up to 800 watt or more, see them on ebay
all the time, they are even made in 25 ohm or 100 ohm so you can
series or parallel them to what you need, easy to make a dummy load that
will handle many KW with just a couple. Large heat sink needed.

Makes me curious about designing with these TO-220 resistors in the 1000
Ohm size of appropriate power rating... Parallel 20 of them like folks
do on the axials that they put in the can type dummy loads with oil.

Options:

1) 20 in parallel on a finned copper or bare aluminum sink of sufficient
size and then entire assembly in a oil wetted container.
2) Same, but only the finned side of the finned/pinned heat exchanger in
a coolant bath.

I'd like to have a rugged, high power, key down load built from easily
obtainable and replaceable parts.

Re: [Elecraft] Skimmer and the K3S

2016-09-05 Thread Merv Schweigert

First off I am no Flex Fan, and am a happy camper with a couple K3 radios,

K9CT contest station has swapped all their K3 for Flex 6700 and ran a
couple

contests recently high power multi multi. You can find some place on the
web or on the Midwest Society of contesters blog about the operators
comments and how the Flex worked out.
They seem to be happy campers, so a lot of the Flex problems with
strong signals must have been worked out. Have seen several pictures of
the

setup and operators using the Flex.

Not sure where high end op came from, but do know what high dollar op
means when you see these large contest set ups.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Also, I'd bet that the Flex 6700 is not a viable option in a
multi-transmitter station (or around broadcast transmitters, or with
one or more close-in ham neighbors) without serious bandpass filters
in front of it. Bandpass filters commonly used for SO2R and in
multi-transmitter contesting stations can fulfill that function. BUT
-- those filters are NOT going to be sufficient when the strong
signals are in-band -- for example, 40M in EU and AS, and on 20M,
where high power broadcast stations are just outside 20M, but still
within the passband of most practical bandpass filters. Or in a big
multi-multi with a run station and a multiplier station on the same band.

save you a LOT of trouble and headaches if you're missing some hardware
if you get it on the way up front... and they like to only have to do

Re: [Elecraft] KIO3B

2015-12-15 Thread Merv Schweigert

Im sure they will come in some due time..

What is strange for some of us outsiders is the logic

We will have boards when the K3S demand is met? sounds like there is not
enough money to buy more boards than what they expect K3S sales to be?
Ordering another few hundred extra of the boards would solve the problem
of not
having enough on hand. Or is the supplier that slow? Can they only
provide a

few boards a week?
Seems the K3 was funded partially by guys paying up front and having a 6
month
wait when this started years back, I assume a lot of those are still
around and

willing to pay up front if money is that short now.
Stretching some of this stuff out for a year or more does not help
business, only

the most dedicated go for that idea.
Perhaps its a labor shortage/paying for more labor, cant sell them yet
as no
instructions written, or "testing" done? Seems there are a number of
guys

willing to help out on that end.

So all the quiet and non fulfilled talk is just that, talk, just being
honest and
frank about whats up and why its not available would put to rest the
speculation

and angst that silence brews.

Not criticizing, just wondering, I need a couple and keep putting off
installing

KYSN3 boards in one radio, its been apart for so many mods the screws are
wearing out, had to replace them to keep it decent looking. Had
chipped off

the black.

Which reminds me on another thing, I have had lots of knobs crack on the K3
Elecraft has been super at replacing them, the last ones I got have a
metal
insert and will never crack I assume, but they are butt ugly, instead
of semi
shiny black knobs, they are a dull black material that looks like
something that
came on some military piece of junk. Not even a close match to the
other knobs.

Wazzup with this deal...

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Jerry,

You are correct, I am not going to speculate other than to say "it
will happen sometime", but that may not be the end of this year as was
projected back at Dayton in May 2015.
I have no idea when that 'sometime' is because I have no information
about the production capability of the board house supplying Elecraft
with the KIO3B vs. the number of K3S units being ordered and shipped.

When there are enough in house to supply both the K3S and the expected
deluge of orders anticipated for K3 upgrades, then you will see the
KIO3B offered for K3 upgrades.

[Elecraft] Power output from KVX3

2015-10-30 Thread Merv Schweigert

I have been using the output on the KVX3 on the 475khz band
and it has worked great, can adjust it from .1 to 1.5mw, I have
been running it at .4mw driving an amplifier,
This morning I noticed that the power control no longer adjusts
the power output, no matter the setting, its at some unknown
power, maybe full power? but I cannot change the output any
longer,
Any ideas if there is something I could have changed or perhaps the KVX3
has gone south?

Thanks 73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Re: [Elecraft] IMD and supply voltage

2015-10-30 Thread Merv Schweigert

Several years back I had obtained some excellent 4cx5 and
4cx10k tubes, they were a little more juice than my house
mains power could handle, so I sold them .. the pair of
4cx10k went to a ham in CA who was "upgrading" his amp
that used a pair of 4cx5K at the time, easy upgrade since the
sockets are the same etc.
There were several 4cx10K amps in the St Louis area at that time
so its not just a CA option.
THis was before Elecraft.. so OT I suspect.

NO!! Us Californian's understand dB. If you ain't increasing power in 10 dB
increments, don't bother.
Eimac made 4CX1's based on market demand in California.
Don't ask me how I know this...

As I think I remember, in California the limit was 1500 watts, unless you were
calling an ATNO (all-time new one) in which case it was 5 kW.

[Elecraft] 630 meter and the K3

2015-10-15 Thread Merv Schweigert

630M has been very active and plenty of good signals on the band,
I use an "old" K3 with new Synth and BPF and it has been working
excellent, output is 1MW driving a 100watt NJD technologies amp.

For the past week or more i have been able to decode signals from
VK3ELV and VK5ABN for hours at a stretch, from 1130Z until sunrise
here at 1630Z. Vk has also been copied as far as the west coast
and inland as far as Texas.
I also decoded the first JA to KH6 it appears the other nite and again
last nite. ja1pkg
Stations are copied as far as the mainland east coast. And this is with
solar storms and heavy QRN here in the Pacific.
I am using a standard realtec on board sound card in a old HP3130 and
getting decodes up to -32 on a regular basis.

If you have the slightest interest in the low bands and WSPR its time
to take a listen, also 136KHZ has been active and activity is increasing
there as well, check the online WSPR map and see the activity around
the world on LF 136khz and MF 474.2khz.

Dx is alive and well on 630 meters, jump in and get your feet wet, but
remember you cannot transmit there as yet without a experimental
license, but decoding and reporting WSPR is fine with your ham call.
Or if you get bit by the LF bug you can apply for experimental call sign
and operate, its easy to do.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Proper Grounding

2015-10-01 Thread Merv Schweigert

This whole thread is quite amusing, no matter how much explanation takes
place, people still believe a ground rod is RF ground .

Then the poor guy with the problem who states "nothing has changed"
admits he has not grounded the station gear yet. but it was before.
Talk about a lot of posting for nothing.
I hope some of you will at least read and learn, there has been some
great info

put forth in this thread, and from the replies one can tell that some
still dont get it.

Thanks to Jim and others who have the patience to keep going over and over
the facts trying to educate. Hope some of it sinks in,

Part of my confusion is based on this being a commercial solution that

Buying "a commercial solution" seems to mean that you're assuming that
whoever is selling a product really understands how antennas work and
the shortcomings of the product they're selling, so you don't have to
understand it. Part of being a ham is taking the time to actually
learn how stuff works. I suggest that you study the links I posted
yesterday. They are both tutorial and practical.

Just
have the trim and staining to finish for that. I'm also planning to
run a
dedicated power cable with heavier gauge wire to get a better ground
at my
station. Based on the TON of responses I've gotten I'll be running a
heavy
gauge THNN or similar from outside my station (where I'll add a
ground rod)
up to an antenna switch for grounding and bonding all of it together
with
the main ground on the other side of the house. I'm not sure how I'll
NOT

end up with a ground loop in this configuration.

While a dedicated power line to your station is a good thing, there's
too much foggy thinking and false logic in what some have been telling
you to do. The earth is NOT a sump into which RFI is poured. Yes, you
should run a bonding cable from your station to a ground rod, BUT that
rod MUST be bonded to all other grounds for safety. What these two
measures can do for you is CONTROL where common mode current flows --
it will flow on that new ground wire and that new dedicated power line
-- but that RF current will still RADIATE, and can be picked up by any
other wires in your home, like those in your home entertainment system.

Caps added for emphasis. :)

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Test Mode TX and TX Monitor?

2015-09-28 Thread Merv Schweigert
Mine registers anything it wants in non transmit mode, many times pegs
the swr chart, other

times 2 or 3 to 1.. normal from what I see.

Merv K9FD/KH6 WH2XCR

I did something tonight I have not done before since having my P3 TX Monitor in
place. I was testing the adjustment on my paddle in TX Test Mode and I noticed
that the P3 acted as normal — that is, no signal — with the exception of the
bar graph for SWR. The bar graph registered an SWR of 3:1 (normally about
1.1:1) in response to key down while in Test Mode. Yet, the bar graph acts
normally showing the correct SWR in TX mode (not test).

I would expect that the P3 would not register anything while in Test Mode TX —
just like before hooking up the TX Monitor.

So, this is a little anomaly that others see and is this normal behavior?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Ham Shack Arrangements - just a little OT

2015-09-17 Thread Merv Schweigert
I have always had the problem of new or added gear fitting the "hutch"
space,

it was either to wide etc
In my last desk top "hutch" I solved that problem, I made the
horizontal shelves
full width of the desk top, but the vertical supports or dividers I
made loose or
adjustable, I can slide the vertical supports anyplace along the
shelves, that
way new or different size gear can be accommodated with no revision to
the desk.
Get a new radio and need another inch space? bump the vertical support
over
an inch. I used 3/4 inch shelf board for both the shelves and
divider/supports,

the end supports of course are fixed and screwed and glued.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

I've really enjoyed the conversation about shack and desktop setups, as I'm
about to get into the garage, get behind the saw, and build a desktop
equipment shelf.

I've been talked out of building vertical supports, thanks to this
list. So now I'm trying to future-proof my design. Eventually, I'd hope to
have a complete K-Line. So, I'm thinking I'd just add up the front panel
widths of all the K-Line components and perhaps add an inch or two. Does
this sound reasonable or am I missing something obvious?

I had just finished putting the Synth board in and modifying the
BPF, 2 days ago was able to copy VK3 on 630M for what we
think is the first VK to KH6. Not as far as Kens trip, but was
nice to see the K3 working very well.
Antenna here on receive is 40ft high 80 meter dipole fed with ladder line
shorted in the shack, fed to the K3.
Transmit is 160 meter InvL 70 ft high with variometer at the
base for tuning/loading.
Working to modify my transverter for K3 direct input now
instead of using 10mhz as the IF.
I missed last nite due to my computer mother board giving up
the ghost.
Thanks Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 TX Mon question

2015-08-13 Thread Merv Schweigert

Great, thanks for the clarification,
73 Merv

Hi Merv,

I don't believe this changes the existing P3TXMON operation with
non-Elecraft radios.

Only if Alan detects that its a K3 when the P3 with P3TXMON is powered
up will he actually query the radio to see if its in TX. Otherwise it
will act as it does now and use detection of forward power to go into
TX mode.

OK, what I did was change it so that, when a K3 is connected, the P3
TX monitor will only go into transmit mode when commanded to do so
by the K3, even if RF power is present on the coax. That should
eliminate the false tripping.

Besides, the time domain (rise/fall times) is the wrong way to look at

[Elecraft] Transistor pads

2015-08-10 Thread Merv Schweigert

I was just updating my oldest K3 to the new Synth, and a couple other mods,
one mod required the rear portion of the bottom plate be removed, I notice
there are no heatsink pads on the 3 transistors.
I do not have any on hand and there is nothing available on this island
for sure,
Is it possible to use silicone heat sink goop, a small layer to replace
the pads?

Thanks 73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Re: [Elecraft] TX MON for the P3

2015-08-09 Thread Merv Schweigert

You need the beta firmware upgrade for the P3.

I installed two TX MON boards in my two P3's.
I upgraded both K3s and both P3s.

In neither P3 to I get a TX MON in the menu.

I installed both P3's TX MON boards on a grounded mat and I was also
grounded.

So I am at a loss why there is no TX MON appearing in my P3 Menu.

Any help will be appreciated.

[Elecraft] P3TXMon

2015-08-06 Thread Merv Schweigert

Received my P3 TX mon kit the other day and put it in today,
as someone mentioned, took 30 mins or less, very easy
and great fit etc.
Worked as soon as I fired up the P3 and turned on the TX
feature.

One thing I would like to mention is that my P3 is a older beta
version, and I have been seeing some odd "noise" on the
display, it seemed to be internal, while having the P3 lid off,
I cleaned and applied DeOxit to the cables, and installed the
cable clip that holds the ribbon cable to the side of the cabinet,
after reassembly all the "noise" is gone and the P3 works like
new.
If your seeing any thing strange on your P3 and cannot find an
external source, perhaps clean your TMP cables and BNC
connectors etc, check if you have the cable clip on your
model,

Ebay has not been listing many, the place they are showing up is on
QTH.COM classifieds and Eham classifieds, has been a number of
them there,
Prices vary from more than what they paid for them new to reasonable
adjusted for cost of updates etc. Correct priced ones are gone fast,
others linger for sale for weeks and weeks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Below 500 KHz RX Antenna

2015-07-19 Thread Merv Schweigert
Dont overlook perhaps an antenna you already have up, I use an 80 meter
dipole thats
fed with open line, I short the open line at the shack and feed that
into the receiver,
I have copied the east coast many times from Hawaii, and of course all
the other guys
between, up to Alaska, thats on 475KHZ. Both CW and WSPR. No preamp
used.

So if your wanting to just listen and get an idea of whats there, maybe
check your present
set up, coax fed dipole would work the same if you short the coax at
the shack end.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

"Good," "Fast," "Cheap," pick two. At least that's what I told the
General officer who wanted everything. We didn't get the job, thank God.

An active E-field probe is probably the optimum, unless you have a lot
of room and time. Small mag loops will work too, but often require a
preamp

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KBPF3 mod for LF questions capacitor size ?

2015-07-07 Thread Merv Schweigert

Any reason why small leaded caps cannot be just be bridged across the SMTs?

Lots easier to hold the lead with a tweezer and dap a little solder on
the end.

Merv K9FD/KH6

They're 0603s (.06" x .03"), which would be considered "mediums size" by
today's SMD standards. But it does take a bit of courage (and a good pair of tweezers, and maybe a
shot of cheap whisky) to install them by hand. Hats off to our intrepid customers attempting this
for the first time!

73,

N6KR

P.S. Our engineers and technicians routinely work with with packages that are
about 0603 size, but have *6* leads that must all be soldered. This is done by
flowing solder onto all 3 pins on one side at a time (carefully!), then wicking
the excess solder off with solder wick or a vacuum tool. Not for the faint of
heart.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 won't do Split right

Freq readout does not change when using split, the XMT freq is what VFO B

K3 #7167 with KSYN3A and FW 5.29, no sub receiver, SPLT SV set to no. Will
not go into Split, little box says SPLT, TX arrow points to B, and Deltaf
led is on. When transmitting, it will still transmit but on A frequency,
does not shift to B. Same on different bands, CW or SSB. Can turn XIT on and
it will work correctly and the frequency readout will change. Haven't worked
split much lately, used to work, maybe before KSYN3A. Hope it's some
setting, but I don't know, need help.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 For Sale

2015-06-09 Thread Merv Schweigert
Not to put a damper on things, but you have to consider what you are
buying in light of

the new K3S..

The same K3S today would cost 3250.00 with all the new updates.

So if you take 2600 plus a new synth board, and new KXV3B at min for
updates
you have 3020.You did not list the serial number, so if it needs
the newer DSP
boards etc you are up to the brand new price of the K3S which has all
updates.
Guys snapping up older K3 need to do a cost comparison and see what fits
their
needs these days. I have two K3 and it sure does not seem cost
effective to me to
update these old ones when a new one would be cheaper, in fact if you
swap
over your filters and a module or two a new K3S is far cheaper than
updating.
If its an "old" serial number the updates will put you well over the
price of a new

radio.

So while its super to be able to update to what you have needs for, its
not a good

idea if your going to try and do all the updates to an older one.
Something I have to face in light of owning 2 "older" k3.. what to do
with them,
any way I see it I will have to take a loss when selling compared to a
month

ago.
73 Merv K9FD/KH6

My neighbor Pat Miller, W6DRX, used to be an active contester, but has
been inactive for several years due to health issues and a major job
change. Pat and Sandy are moving out of their house (which they will
rent out) to live on a sailboat that they just bought. He's selling
all his radio gear, including an early serial number K3. He built it
from a kit, and I opened it up to verify what was in it. It is VERY
clean.

Here's what's in it, and what it would have cost if you had ordered it
as a kit last month and built it yourself. A factory built rig would,
of course, have cost several hundred dollars more.

 2015 Price
K3/100 Base Rig Kit $2,500
KXV3 Transverter I/O Kit 120
K3 ATU Kit 320
2.7 kHz 5-pole TX Filter incl
400 Hz 8-pole Filter 140
1.8 kHz 8-pole Filter 140
Total3,220
CA Tax 258
Total w/tax $3,478

On the advice of K6XX, Pat is asking $2,600 for the K3 as built. He
will accept offers without one or both of the filters. He also has an
un-built 2nd RX kit, which is the same as what is currently being sold
for $600. Pat is asking $400.

I posted this listing last week, and I'm really surprised that this
hasn't been snapped up! It's a very good deal on a very clean radio.
Only yesterday, K4TM posted here that he had sold a similarly equipped
radio for several hundred dollars more! If you don't like the price,
make an offer.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 receive on .474.2 kHz - OT MF Gibson Girls

2015-02-24 Thread Merv Schweigert

Go to
http://wsprnet.org/drupal/wsprnet/map

select MF band (600meters) put in my call WH2XCR
and select past 12 hours.

You will see first hand what propagation on 600M is like in todays
world. Technology has made things a lot different, or leave the
call sign field blank and see all the activity on 600M.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Some MF propagation variables are illustrated in the miliary manuals for those
"Gibson Girls" (GG). Most were SCR-578/BC-778 units that were 500 kHz A2 only,
about 2 watts plate input, connected to a 300-foot wire vertical suspended by kite or
balloon and a ground strap dropped into salt-water sea...nominal range was around 300
miles. In fresh water the range was about **10 percent of that**. For land use a
300-foot counterpoise was required and expected range was **5 to 10 miles**.

(Very late in WWII the T-74/CRT-3 GG became available, identical to the BC-778
with 8280 kHz A1 HF added. In early 1954 the T-74A/CRT-3A came out with that
new 8364 kHz A1 HF output instead.)

Unlike the post-war merchant-marine crank-operated lifeboat radios operating on
those same frequencies, none of these units had receivers, although in late war
some USAAF flights over the Arctic were supplied with a dry-cell
battery-powered 200 to 400 kHz receiver AN/CRR-1.

IMHO it is interesting to study the very serious use of these low-power
marginal antenna emergency sets operating on MF from 75 years ago. The new
630m band is technically and *historically* fascinating. It's good to see
equipment makers like Elecraft supply support for its use.

Mike / KK5F
(Kept a 500 kHz receiver near bedside for several decades!)

Fred wrote:

When the WW2 surplus began flooding the market in the US in the early
50's, the Gibson Girls already had the 8MHz frequency, 8280 if my memory
serves me ... which it often doesn't. The story says it got changed to
8365 because people bought these things dirt cheap and did not know that
when they cranked them, they transmit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 receive on .474.2 kHz

2015-02-23 Thread Merv Schweigert
Not quite true at all Fred, I copy east coast stations on a fairly
regular basis,

Eric is one that is a "regular", copy of various signals across the US is
daily operation. West coast and Canadian signals are copyable here
from before sunset until after sunset almost daily with audible
signals, they

are running a few watts ERP.
My receive antenna so far is a 80 meter dipole fed with open line,
shorted at

the shack end, 40 ft high.
So not a large antenna by ant means and not tuned to 600M.
The band is far better than what most people expect, of course the
better the

antenna the better the results, but there are many on being heard that are
running 160 meter antennas with large loading coils and its working quite
well.
By the way from here to the east coast is 5000 mi. 2500 to you guys in CA.
and you guys are like shooting fish in a barrel. 2500 miles is nothing.
Some hams in TX have made it to VK and ZL, east coast are crossing the
Atlantic on good nites.
73 Merv K9FD/KH6 WH2XCR

5. I'd say that, if you get several hundred miles on 495-510 KHz at
night limited to 20 watts ERP, you're doing very good.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Feature Request - Main: ALARM - Tap 4 to activate reminder to ID

2015-02-19 Thread Merv Schweigert
I think there should be a conelrad alert system built in also, since
the K3 can cover
the BC band and knows when the alert system would go off, have the
display blink

the entire display for national alerts.
If the VHF option was installed it could also pick up the weather alert
signals and

warnings and flash that on the screen..,

Of course in a conelrad alert it should disable the transmitter
immediately per regulations.

There should also be a roger beep sent when unkeying the mike so that
you know your
no longer transmitting and the other station can hear when you stop for
sure, so they do
not double on your transmission. Something new other than the standard
beep we

hear, perhaps a ding dong type sound.

Just a few more features and the K3 could be the best general radio on
the market.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Nice, Key on the PTT key, you would get one more warning 10 minutes (or 9)
after your last transmit then no more. I am bad at IDs but this falls into
the someday bucket.

Re: [Elecraft] Further K3 development

2015-02-13 Thread Merv Schweigert
I hope some side by side specs show up, like I mentioned to upgrade for
me would
be 800 bucks, 2 radios, not going to do that without some solid proof
of what I am

getting, no complaints at all, just like to see what I should expect.

How about a new mixer board? Present one can be improved quite a bit
with some
newer 50- cent chips like the FSA3157.with better specs than the
I7SWX mods

and much less complicated,

Still some room to improve the K3, so thanks Elecraft for working to
keep it up to date.

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Dear OMs,
I will follow this thread for a while. It would be nice to know more
about the performance enhancement as Johnny Siu has stated.

What I am really chuffed about is that Wayne, Eric and company are
enhancing a radio which has been on the market perhaps seven years now.
Oh I like the modular design and construction and I love the company.

The K3 is not being made obsolete but it is being updated right back to
SN 1 - My friend Brendan Minish, EI6IZ can update SN 42 and no doubt he
will.I will be contacting Brendan to see what he thinks.

Good going guys, my loyalty is rewarded yet attain. If I can be
jingoistic it is nice to see an American company performing in this manner.
The edge is not lost. Great to see the engineering continue to evolve the
K3 - thank you.

Subject: [Elecraft] Upgraded K3 synthesizer module now available: The
KSYN3A

The KSYN3A synthesizer module for the K3 is a completely new design that
improves on the original KSYN3 in several ways. All K3s shipped on or
after January 23, 2015 already include the new synthesizer (serial number
8801 and later).

See feature list below. Ordering and installation instructions can be
found here:

http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K3%20Parts

* * *

NOTE: If you wish to upgrade a K3 that includes the sub receiver (KRX3),
you'll need two (2) KSYN3A modules, since the synthesizers for both
receivers must be of the same type.

* * *

KSYN3A FEATURES:

* FASTER CW BREAK-IN AND MORE ACCURATE CW TIMING

A dedicated coprocessor on the module permits faster transmit/receive
switching, improving CW timing accuracy with both internal and external
keying. This also speeds up receive recovery between elements.

* ULTRA-LOW PHASE NOISE

The KSYN3A significantly improves the K3's already excellent receive and
transmit phase noise characteristics at close carrier spacings. This, in
turn, improves its close-spaced receive dynamic range, yielding even
better weak signal detection in the presence of strong signals. In
transmit mode, the KSYN3A keeps the signal exceptionally clean, further
enhancing K3 performance at multi-transmitter stations, Field Day and
DXpeditions.

* 600-METER COVERAGE

The new synthesizer provides complete coverage of 600 meters -- and below.
VFO tuning extends down to 100 kHz, with sensitivity gradually falling off
below 450 kHz. Receive sensitivity (MDS) at 475 kHz is typically -120 dBm
at the RX ANT IN jack. Transmit output of about 1.0 mW is available for
use with a suitable external amplifier. (Note: 600-m allocations vary by
country. Operation on this band requires the KBPF3 and KXV3 options. For
receive-only use, an antenna can be connected to the RX ANT IN jack on the
KXV3 module. For transceive operation with an external amplifier, use the
XVTR IN and XVTR OUT jacks, and set CONFIG:KXV3 to TEST.)

* EXCELLENT MECHANICAL STABILITY

The KSYN3A is virtually immune to both physical vibration and magnetic
coupling, and operates over a very wide temperature range with no change
in performance. K3 kit construction is simplified, as the KSYN3A requires
no alignment of any kind.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Indoor antennas at Dayton?

2015-02-10 Thread Merv Schweigert

Gotcha Tom, thanks, it did not come through like that.
Should be a number of guys on here using small indoor antennas,

I used one for several years in 2001 while living in a condo on the beach,
it was 44 foot of wire taped to the ceiling of the second floor condo, fed
with 300 ohm twin lead, and tuned with a johnson matchbox. Worked
decent on 40 to 10 meters, but too large for what you need.

Hi,
No I am presenting a software package and would like to show some
signals on the K3 indoors at Dayton. So the antenna has to be small.
Transmit not necessary!

Re: [Elecraft] Good time to buy Begali products

2015-01-26 Thread Merv Schweigert

I have the exact same "problem" Gary, and never mention it as many CW ops
dont get the drift. I use triangle shaped paddles and that seems to
work for me,
you can get scrap plastic from a plastic dealer in many colors, I found
the same

thickness in red and blue and made new paddles, sanding the cut edges with
really fine sandpaper makes them clear and rounded and look professional,
its easy to counter sink the holes with a larger size drill bit.
I usually do it by hand (not with a drill) so I dont break the plastic
which is easy to

do with a drill.
73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Alas, the holes are countersunk which on this key aesthetically looks
ideal. I'd need two right side keys for the one inverted, on the
left, to play nice with my thumb. Again, this isn't a slight against
anything with the key whatsoever, it's the way I touch the paddles
that is unusual. But if I make sculpted paddles for my Sculpture,
that sounds right. ;)

With this key and the K3, CW / RTTY really can't get much more fun to
send.

All the past stories on where you went and had no TSA problems etc etc are
really quite worthless. Have you been there in the past two days?
Did you notice that the TSA as of today is on high alert, they are
checking

anything and everything in the light of new terror threats against airlines.
They are pulling people out of line with any items suspicious and swabbing
hands for prior explosive handling.
There have been updated alerts in the past 24 hours.

I would still take the radio if you really want to operate, but call
ahead or look up the

latest TSA alert levels and be prepared for more inspection than normal.

What happened yesterday is not valid in todays world, like it or not.

Re: [Elecraft] VFO tracking

If your in split, and the VFOs track, you have to hold the "sub" button

the VFOs.

George,

That happens when the VFOs are locked. Hold the lock button (to the
right of the VFO A knob) to toggle the ON/OFF state of LOCK.

The t/r transitions in QSK and semi-QSK CW when there are nearby strong
signals make a horrible racket -- enough to make me turn down the volume
when sending, which negates the utility of QSK, of course.

Although the QSK is smooth and quiet on a quiet band, this is not the case
when there are strong signals around. Here in 4X the EU signals can be
super-strong, and in recent FT4TA pileups, the banging and crashing around
my sidetone made operating sheer torture.

Yes, I am using QRQ mode (I listen to the DX on the subrx and the pileup
on the main so as to make this possible) and New QSK. It doesn't matter.

The problem is as bad or worse in 'simplex' operation when numerous
stations are calling a DX station on the same frequency.

I understand that this is caused by the limitations of the synthesizers.
But I have discussed with Wayne and Lyle the possibility of changing the RX
muting function, which would slow down the QSK but at least make it quiet.
Fast QSK is worthless if I have to turn down the audio to protect my
eardrums!

This would do a huge amount to increase the operating pleasure of serious
CW operators. The feature could be optional so those who like to ragchew at
high speed in QRM-free spots could turn it off.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 front panel encoders

Are there different encoders used on the K3 from batch to batch?
I have an early K3 that has silk smooth encoders, and have another

So there has been different encoders used?

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Has anyone figured out how to clean or fix front panel encoders (SHIFT/LO ,
HI /WIDTH) ? These cheap ( ~ 0.5$ encoders ) in my K3 has always been
quite " jumpy " i.e. value jumps up and down in random steps . Also the"
feeling " is not what you would expect form rig in this price range.

Similar issue was in FT-1000MP RIT encoder in 90s . Dust got inside the
optical encoder and turning RIT knob jumped frequency steps quite randomly.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise in the Mideast

2014-10-12 Thread Merv Schweigert
There is Chinese Hainan Island radar that is very active, and usually on
7MHZ.
it covers 100KHZ at least, the "smaller" 10khz wide signals are also
radar, over the
horizon, the smaller ones usually are several seconds of signal then
space and

repeat..the Hainan dragon is constant on all the time when operating.
it is over S9 here on 40 when its on...
Not sure if thats what your hearing or not, K3 blanker will not handle
it, helps a
little but not much, I asked Elecraft about it and they mentioned an
experimental
change of some components that may help, but I do not have the info and
have

not tried it.
73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Since getting on the air from Israel I notice an interesting noise on
the bands 7 and 10 mHz and to a lesser extent on 14 mHz. It is a
wideband 'schmutz' (technical term) which can take from 10 to 50 or
100 kHz. Its amplitude drops of gradually as you move away from the
center. It reaches S9 levels sometimes on 7 mHz.

It does not look like the typical switching supply noise. I do not
hear it on 3.5 or 1.8 mHz.

The K3's DSP noise blanker seems to help a little, but not much.
Does anyone know what it is? Could it be some kind of spread spectrum
transmission? It could be coming from anywhere in Europe or the Mideast.

[Elecraft] K3 fan problem

2014-04-16 Thread Merv Schweigert

Noticed this morning when turning on the K3 for the first time after
being off all night, that the fans were on and changing speed
rapidly. The fan would run between low and the 3rd speed back
and forth.
Checking the PA temp it was jumping from 25C to 60C back and
forth, thus the reason the fans were doing the same. It did this
for about 2 minutes and then went into normal no fan mode.
Anyone had something like this happen? Bad sensor? The radio
had just been turned on so could not have been up to 60C temp
indicated.
Never use more than 35 watts power as I drive an amp all the time,

Re: [Elecraft] P3 & marker B transmit freq.

2014-03-19 Thread Merv Schweigert
You can make a macro that toggles, my PF1 goes to split and up 5, sub
receiver, hitting it again goes back to

normal.. saves PF2 for another use.

Merv K9FD/KH6

H ... that seems like a whole lot of effort to work an other wise
user-friendly radio/panadapter, but to each his own. I can spot DX in
a heartbeat from the pileup on the P3 and of course, just below the
pile will be the UP Cops and [hopefully], the DX under them. I
finally built a PF1 macro to do: A-->B; A-->B; Move B up 5 KHz; Go to
SPLIT. PF2 undoes it. Moving my TX freq with the B-knob and P3 is
quick and painless. I don't have the second receiver.

Other than holding SPLIT, I don't know how to transmit on VFO B.

I got a Pigknob which is on the left of the laptop with the mouse and
a paddle and migrated the macros into the PK. I use the P3 markers
during a contest to mark a multiplier who has a pile on him so I can
come back when he's more lonely.

button to activate B ((Magenta) I see where the last transmission is
and I place the Magenta marker at that location and tap: The Sub Rx
goes to that frequency where the DX was last listening but sub is not
engaged, it just sits on that frequency and does nothing with it.

Problem is that if I don't then reach over and manually hold the
split button on the K3 itself to have the K3 transmit on the DX
listening frequency, I'll still keep transmitting on the DX transmit
frequency because the K3 will not have gone split; its as if the
procedure is halted half way and it shouldn't function this way, its
not intuitive.

If I'm going to the effort to engage Marker B to QSY its because I
want to transmit on the Marker B frequency. What do I have to the do
differently to force the K3 go split to transmit on the B freq when I
tap on MKR B?

I assume a search of the internet may bring up some of that info.
It may have been in the old 73 magazines or even CQ.

I dont mean mods for the "free banders" either, these were mods to use the
radios on 10 meters by licensed hams.

Merv K9FD/KH6

My goal with this radio is to offer a radio that will introduce new
technician operators to non-line-of-sight operation. The basic
requirements are:

  Covers 28.3 - 28.5 MHz USB.

Audio quality that will appeal to an FM user.

Enough power to make QSOs easily.

Inexpensive enough to buy on impulse.

  Simple to use UI.

Supporting FM repeater use on some of 6M, 2M, and 70cm might expand
sales in the target market enough to be justified. A mobil operations
story would make it useful for car-to-car operation during low sunspot
times. Availability as a no-solder kit could cut costs, increase pride
of ownership, and aid word-of-mouth sales.

Other features like CW operation, split operation, etc. should only be
included if they significantly expand the market and can be introduced
without undue UI complications.

Re: [Elecraft] Straight Key in parallel with PC keying

2013-09-12 Thread Merv Schweigert
I just made up a small box with 6 jacks on it, for 6 different keys,
keyers or whatever,
all that is needed are some cheap diodes to "steer" the keyer in use.
Diodes block
whatever is being done from going back down the line to another
device. Another

jack goes to a cable to the K3.
No switches to throw, nothing to worry about. Think I used 1n4007 or
some such

cheap diode. Been using the same box on many radios for the past 20 years
with no problems.
73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Currently I manually switch between PC keying via a Microham Winkeyer
which keys via N1MM and a straight key by unplugging and re-plugging
in the back of the radio. I have been reluctant to simply parallel
the two by means of a Y cable for fear that sending with the straight
key would place a direct short across the output of the winkeyer and
wreak havoc on my winkeyer. Am I being unduly concerned?? Or is
there enough isolation built into the Winkeyer so that all will be
well?? If I could use a Y cable I would have the PC, the paddle, and
the straight key all available all the time which would be great.
Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Noise signature

2013-05-01 Thread Merv Schweigert

Yes I should have mentioned that Eric. I made an adapter from a small box
that has a male BNC on one end, diodes inside, and a female BNC
on the other end,I use a whip with a bnc for general hunting, or a coax
cable to a hand held loop antenna for some directional work, depending
on freq in use.
Works quite well as you can see the noise pattern that is bugging you and
see the signal increase or decrease much better than on a metered
instrument.
For a battery I steal one of my model aircraft LiPo types, have several
packs that are 5000 ma 12 volt, they last plenty long to noise hunt.
Just have to overcome the idea of taking the P3 out of the shack into the
field. :o)

73 Merv K9FD/KH6

IMPORTANT - If you do this, make sure to protect the P3 IF input with
back to back diodes. Static electricity on the whip antenna can harm
the input pre-amp. (Ask me how I know..)

I made an adapter here with a male-female BNC terminator with the back
to back diodes internally instead of the 50 ohm resistor.

I power the P3 with a 10 cell AA alkaline battery pack to search for RFI.

Perhaps we can organize a local team and go DF-ing. Someone in the

and a couple of 2M talkies. What you need is a portable RX that you
can go walking or driving with that can tune to where that noise is.
Does it appear below 80M? Perhaps on 160? if so, an AM BC RX would
work. Or a loop of some sort attached to a battery-powered KX3 I
sometimes use my Kenwood THF6A for chasing noise, but the HF RX
probably isn't good enough to hear your noise until you're real close
to it.

Once you've identified a source, or source location, you can think
about how to approach the owner about a solution.

Also -- I suggest that you post this to the RFI reflector at

FSK D is the speed set ? should say 45 6P5 on the readout when you

Dear Gang:

I am trying to chase down a last TX5K contact on RTTY and cannot get FSK-D mode
to work on my K3. I followed the steps in the manual, and have been trying
various THR levels in DECODE, but all I get are random letters even with what
looks like a strong signal ( peaking 3 bars on each side). I must be missing
something simple--any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] 2-meter solid-state linear amplifiers with K3 2-meter option

2013-01-21 Thread Merv Schweigert

For the cost of LMR-600 you can find excellent used hard line removed from
cell use etc.
I used to buy it from the tower installers for 1.00 ft. most of it was
new end of

spool stuff even.
Shop around, its there, even the junk yards have it many times if your
in a

large populated area. A 12 pack of beer to the junk yard man produces a lot
of good stuff set aside for you.
Merv K9FD/KH6

Yes, although I did not indicate this earlier, getting a high-gain antenna is
first on my research and shopping list. I know more about what I want there
and where to find it. It is the amplifier part of the problem that I was
asking here. Also, just in case someone wants to raise the issue, I am already
planning on LMR600 low-loss coax (but likely not super low loss hardline coax).

Excellent suggestion, Peter. The difference between 5 watts and 160 watts is 15
dB. It's not too difficult to achieve 10 dB or more of gain with a 2M Yagi of
manageable size, to gain another 10dB by getting it high in the air, and to
lose 10 dB in a long run of small coax and junk connectors.

These ... and CODAR ... operations are confined to specific (narrow)
bands. They do not operate in the amateur bands.

Yes they do operate in the amateur bands until they are reported
and moved by the FCC.

I am involved with the ARRL Intruder watch and there has been many
instances of CODAR intruding on amateur freqs.
Last time I was involved they were operating on 12 meters, after
bring reported they were advised to move and they did.

Best bet is to document time, freq, etc and report it to the Intruder
watch at ARRL and they will get the ball rolling to get them removed
from the ham bands.

screws rusting nothing else shows any signs of corrosion, much better than
any other gear I have here in the salt air.

All,While on a mini dx-pedition, most of the original exterior screws in my K3
developed rust after operating near salt water for 10 days. I have ordered the
stainless steel screws to replace the original exterior K3 chassis screws.
1) Should I be concerned about rust developing inside my K3?2)Over the next
several years, I plan to operate near salt water for extended periods and
want to make sure I'm am not going to damage my K3. Is there anything I can,
or could have done differently to prevent the rust from developing?

I use a 99 with the K3 and any length coax works just fine, it there is
SWR on the

If theres SWR its either a ground differential problem between the amp

tuned input is not correct, or the amps input resistor has been cooked.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 feature request - auto-changing tuning rate

2012-03-04 Thread Merv Schweigert
To go from CW to SSB requires no knob spinning at all,
Just set two of the memory buttons, one for each mode,
and they are band dependent so each band has its own
settings. That way it changes modes, filters, freq etc all
in one push of the button.
Operates somewhat like band stacking, if you want more
setting per band just use the other Mem buttons.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC Mush

2011-12-04 Thread Merv Schweigert
Eric, thinking on this a little more, when you are testing there with
the pile
up generator do you have real antenna noise also on the radio?
I just checked on 20 meters for example and my noise is flickering S-3
almost the same level as the signals would be in the pile up when this
problem occurs. So signals are close to the noise level or just above.
Perhaps testing with a noise generator set to S3 and the pile up generator
set for signals of S3 to S4 it may show up?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC Mush

2011-12-04 Thread Merv Schweigert
I start noticing it with more than 4 or so stations calling and with all
within the passband of the filter in use, so if I have the 400HZ filter
in and DSP set for 400 the callers can be up to almost 400hz apart,
I have heard it with the 1.0 filter as well.
At first I thought it may have been due to a strong signal just outside
the filter, but I have checked many times and there is nothing there,
no strong signals within several KHZ even. So it appears to be
generated from the signals inside the filter width.
If this is isolated to my radio and or a couple others, thats super, I
will sell this puppy and order a new one.

As far as other radios doing the same thing, I sold my Ten Tec and do
not remember it doing this, I still have my FT-1000D with modified agc
and it does not do it, it has filters down to 125HZ
and does not do it at any bandwidth setting, but it does not hold a
candle to the K3s strong signal handling or filtering, so it sits here idle
for the most part, used for second radio operations, since the addition
of APF.

AGC DCY = NOR
AGG HLD = 20
AGC PLS = NOR
AGC SLP = 000
AGC THR = 008
AGC F = 200
AGC S = 020

Headphones and speaker, no difference
signals S3-S4 range
CW
all bandwidths, use mostly 400hz and narrower.
Tried AGC DCY = SOFT (have PF1 programmed to switch that in and out fast)
ALL settings of SLP and THR
Turning off the AGC improves the "mush".
Loud signals are no problem at all, the K3 handles loud signals better than
any radio.. its when multiple signals of about S-4 are on this occurs,
more
than two or three, a pile up of same strength signals.
I can understand it may difficult to reproduce unless you have a way to
have
10 signals of the same strength, close to the same freq, and keying, just a
carrier will not reproduce the effect, has to be keyed signals you are
trying
to copy. They turn into a single level buzz of sorts.

One note - If signals are below S9+20 and turning AGC off does not help,

Never use NR or NB and have the AGC limiter set for no AGC times.

In my rough gestimation it seems that signals in the S3-S4 range need to
not trigger
the AGC as they do, if one could set the THR to higher level? perhaps
it would stop the
problem.
Is it possible to increase the range of SLP and THR to move the point
where S-3 or S-4
signals trigger the AGC?

Yes to all the above, and those things have nothing to do with the AGC
problems, and
little if any to do with audio harshness.. my K3 is up to date as it comes.

I have the analog radios sitting right beside the K3 so comparison is
now today A=B I have
them hooked to the same antennas same speakers etc all through switching
so can compare
apples to apples.
I have more hearing loss I am sure at 67 than you do, so my comparison
would probably be
more critical if I had better hearing.
I am talking good analog radios, not some old obsolete boatanchor.

2011-12-04 Thread Merv Schweigert
Finally someone who hears what I hear, Im sure this thread will bring
out the
raving crowd of "mine is just fine".
I have the exact same problem in pile ups, and would sure like to see the
parameters changed to be able to adjust more to move the threshold higher.
There was some attempt to "fix" this some time back but it stopped short of
actually working, the agc settings came about but they did not go far
enough
in the adjustment ranges.
Also the audio has been a problem for me for the 3 years I have owned
the K3,
it is rough or raspy sounding especially in a pile up situation,
whether its the
audio itself or something generated in the radio that comes out sounding
like
rough audio I do not know. But compared to my old analog radio it sounds
harsh. It is very tiring after a contest. I know all the comments on how
nice every ones sounds, mine does not, and apparently I am not alone.
And no I am not bashing the K3, its my radio of choice, I have tried
every setting
and every "trick" suggested in the past 3 years and cannot get a
satisfactory
outcome on audio or AGC pileup management.

[Elecraft] Off Thread Warning

2011-11-09 Thread Merv Schweigert
Looking at Ebay just now and there are two "new" K2 radios,
both listed with the same serial number and both with almost
identical descriptions. Serial 6750 on both radios.

Just FYI
Listings are 290630747443 and 300620299703

Either that or I cannot read and am senile.

Re: [Elecraft] P3: Can the Panadapter be used with a Ten Tec Orion 1?

2011-10-24 Thread Merv Schweigert
If you protect the P3 input with some back to back diodes, put a piece of
wire on the IF input, dial up the P3 IF to the the freq you wish to
listen to, and the P3
will show you the received signal.
I think the caveat is to protect the input to the P3 or you will burn it
up..
