[Elecraft] KX3 - Receive Opposite Sideband and I.F. Image Nulling question

2020-07-19 Thread Mike Parkes
I am trying to perform only page 5 of the RX sideband null procedure, and
and have a question. (My KX3 is a later serial number 9852 and according to
the RX sideband null A8.doc, most of this nulling procedure was performed
when the KXFL3 was installed by Elecraft, the only part not done(?) is the
2nd part of the RX SHFT=8.0 I.F. Image (16 kHz) Nulling procedure which is
on page 5 of the PDF document.)

So, I am trying to work through this (using an XG3 with its freqs set per
the instructions to 1810, 3510, 5310, 7010, 10110, 14010, 18110, 21010,
24910, 28010, 50010) and I am at Page 5, Step 7:

  7. Optimize RX SHFT=8.0 I.F. image gain and phase settings as follows: a.
Set both the signal source and KX3 to the target band (starting with 160
m). Recall that *the VFO should be set 16 kHz higher than the signal source*.
Make sure you’re in CW mode. (Note: You can change bands and modes from
within the RXSBNUL menu entry.) *You should hear a strong signal,* and see
an S-meter reading of between S9 and S9+30 dB. If not, adjust the preamp
setting or the RF source level.

What strong signal? With the KX3 iin CW mode, set to 16 KHz higher than the
signal generator frequency, there is no signal at all heard! If I tune down
on 160 meters to the XG3 freq at 1.810 KHz then it is very strong S9. What
am I doing wrong here?
Thanks for any help!

[Elecraft] KX3 internal battery charger normal behavior? (BT * )

2020-04-29 Thread Mike Parkes
I set a 12 hour charge cycle on some 2000mah Eneloops in the KX3.
After the charge cycle had completed the asterisk remained on when checking
voltage, showing BT*11.6V (using vfo B). Is that normal?
I checked Menu > Bat Charge, and it showed CHG OFF so the charging was
completed apparently but I wasn't sure about the ( * ) remaining on.

[Elecraft] KX3 Advice on removing front bezel for cleaning.

2020-03-25 Thread Mike Parkes
Hello team Elecraft
I have some minor dust intrusion into the KX3 behind the bezel and wanted
to remove it and do some light cleaning. Is there anything to be aware of
before removing the VFO knob and the bezel?

The assembly instructions say: "*Place the bezel on the front panel and
secure it, and the CP board inside, as shown in Figure 14"*. (But figure 14
shows* "Preparing the Rubber Washer for Mounting on the VFO B Encoder"*...
is this meant to say Fig 16?) Fig 16 shows the bezel in place, I guess the
bezel is being screwed into the CP board? I don't want to start into this
and screw something up! Thanks for any tips if you have any.

Re: [Elecraft] AXE1 assembly problem

2019-11-07 Thread Mike Parkes
Thanks to all who replied on this issue. As it turned out the missing part
somehow ended up on the bottom of the whip, instead of inside the base on
the AXE1. Elecraft customer support was also very helpful and replied
shortly after I sent my support question email. Thank you Rob at Elecraft

[Elecraft] AXE1 assembly problem

2019-11-05 Thread Mike Parkes
I am just getting around to using the AXE1 and find it is impossible to
screw the extender into the ax1 base ( and I pushed in as hard as I could
while trying to get the threads to connect). It looks to me like a plastic
wrapping around the base of the AXE1 sticks out too far preventing the
threads from reaching. This plastic extension on the axe1 extends out abt
7mm on one side from the base (this plastic part was cut at an angle, 5mm
on one side and 7mm the other.) Should I try and trim this part or send it
back to elecraft?

[Elecraft] XG50 power on aging cycle

2019-10-12 Thread Mike Parkes
Hello Elecraft !
I want to run the KX3 Extended VFO Temperature Compensation procedure again
as I still get +/- 1 drift on 40 meters wspr. The instructions say: "If
using the Elecraft XG50 *for the first time*, an 8 hour power-on aging
cycle is recommended but not required." I did this the first time I ran the
procedure.

Q: Is the 8 hr warm up recommended *every* time you run the procedure? Or
was that just once, for the new XG50?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] KX3 - options to automatically send digital mode CQ's with pauses to listen

2019-07-22 Thread Mike Parkes
I am searching for what software exists that will allow the KX3, while in
data modes (rtty for example), to send a group of CQ's... and then pause to
listen... and then automatically sends CQ again, and continues this until
the OP halts the process. I am not aware of any macro for the KX3 that
would do this. I don't think fldigi has this kind of functionality. HRD
seems to do this which I have not tried. Is there anything else out there
for digi modes that does this? I have a Kantronics KAM that I might put
back into service, as I know for sure it can do this, but thought I would
search software solutions first. Thanks if anyone has any thoughts on that!

Re: [Elecraft] KX2/AX1 WSPR vs FT8

2019-07-20 Thread Mike Parkes
Bret/N4SRN,
I am running a KX3 indoors into a mag loop for 40-30-20 and I get plenty of
wspr spots on my signal at 1 watt or less, and can hear others too.
FT8 needs more signal though, the packets are 1/8 as long (15 seconds
compared to wspr 2 minutes) and is still trying to push similar amounts of
data in a much shorter amount of time. So it is a lot more of a challenge
to make a two way contact. If you are being heard in single minus digits
that is pretty good, my signal is usually in the twenties. I think I made
like one or two FT8 contacts when I first tried out WSJT-x, but lately my
attempts to make an ft8 contact have been unsuccessful. I would say just
keep trying, and eventually you'll make ft8 contacts. I mostly stay with 40
meters though, seems to be the best overall band these days for me. I am
looking forward to the 40 meter add-on for the AX1!

Okay well I tried transmitting at 144.49 from my HT and yep! Sure enough a
big orange signal on the PX3 so it seems to be working fine, I guess the 2
meter background noise is so much less than on HF apparently. It is
certainly totally blank on the PX3 though without an actual signal.

It can't be the squelch because I am showing a signal coming off the

[Elecraft] KX3 - After temperature compensation procedure - continues to show drift?

2019-02-28 Thread Mike Parkes
The other day I finally got up the nerve to perform the temp compensation
procedure on my KX3. The process went fine as far as I could tell (the
Elecraft instructions we great), I tried very hard to limit the temp rise
to only one degree every min or two. So then this morning, I am looking at
my WSPR mode results on 80 meters. At 2 watts I am still being occasionally
reported as drifting 1hz drift, mostly negative, (and saw one -2 hz
drift). I seldom run more than 2 watts any more, and the rig only gets
barely warm at 2. So I guess I am trying to understand what is within spec
as regards these FT8 / wspr types of modes and performing the temp comp
procedure. Is all well now and these are only anomalies? I will wait until
I can get some reports on 20 meters wspr, because I know it was showing 2-4
hertz drift/minute drift on that band at 2 watts, it will be interesting to
see what it shows now if the band opens some. Is it possible to go back to
the original temp compensation values?
Thanks for any thoughts if you have any and 73's from snowy Spokane (we are
really seeing the snow pile up here it actually looks like winter out there

[Elecraft] PX3 - USB thumb drive issues

2019-02-24 Thread Mike Parkes
I am having problems getting the PX3 to work with a thumb drive for
screenshot captures. I had one smaller thumb drive (32MB?) that the PX3
would mount but wouldn't save screenshots too. So I figured maybe the thumb
drive was bad and bought another one. This one locks up the PX3 or causes
the px3 to run extremely slow. This is a brand new thumb drive 128 GB size.
Is it the size that is choking the px3? Should I buy a smaller one, is
there a recommended size? The PX3 manual states nothing about what the
thumb drive requirements are to get it to work.

[Elecraft] AX1 antenna - indoor performance initial results

2019-01-12 Thread Mike Parkes
Hello everyone in Elecraft land!
I just wanted to share my initial results with the AX1 with my KX3 and I am
happy to report contacts on 20 meters at 2 watts on the AX1 from indoors,
the antenna just sitting on the table here in the shack! The contacts were
on wspr mode and I was getting out, but I have yet to decode anything. But
I know the little AX1 can be heard so I am confident reception would be
there if the environment was a little quieter! I have rfi/qrm noise issues
in the shack here so reception is always a challenge. Just wanted to share
that, this little antenna is very cool.

[Elecraft] KX3 - PF1 shortcut interrupting transmitting

2019-01-05 Thread Mike Parkes
Well this is a strange one. I set one of the Programmable Function switches
PF1 to turn the illumination of the display on and off which works fine as
a shortcut (I like to keep the display of the KX3 off most of the time in
the shack and was delighted to find I can set PF1 or PF2 to easily do that
with one step). Well, apparently it *also *ends any transmitting of the KX3
while using external programs like WSJT-X or fldigi. The switch doesn't
work as a shortcut to a menu item while the rig is keyed. Is there a
solution to this or is it some sort of limitation of the PF1 switches that
they cease to work as shortcuts while the rig is transmitting?

[Elecraft] KX3 - Splitting receive audio between PC and external speaker?

2018-12-14 Thread Mike Parkes
I am interested in determining the best way to split out the KX3's receive
audio for digital modes to an external speaker, so that if I want, I can
listen to the band while running digital sound card modes. (Maybe I am just
too old school, but my older rigs (like the IC-751a) could do this easily
because they had a separate digital output for rtty and other fsk modes. So
I was able to monitor the band while also decoding digital modes.) I
thought I could use a splitter from the KX3 phones jack, and send one side
to the PC and the other to a speaker (with its own vol control). I have no
idea how that will impact the signal going to the PC though, at the least
it will be less level to the PC. Or perhaps one of the USB sound card
interfaces can do this, as I think some of them have their own audio out?
Ideally I would also like to be able to monitor the transmitted audio
signal too if possible (whatever the signal is that is leaving the PC and
going to the KX3. If anyone has any advice on this I am all ears.
Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - ERR KEY when using hand key

Thank you Jim!
I figured that was the case. Well... I think I found a solution although it
is a little gangsta... I just wrapped the "ring" area on the 1/4" plug with

works! I am able to key the rig, however now whenever hold the key down it
wants to send a series of dots. I have CW KEY2 set to "HAND" but it is

[Elecraft] KX3 - ERR KEY when using hand key

2018-12-14 Thread Mike Parkes
Hi everyone. Trying to get set up here with a hand key for the first time
with the KX3.
I acquired a key that came with a 1/4" plug, so I thought I could buy an
adapter that would take this down to a 1/8" plug and avoid having to solder
anything. The 1/8" plug is stereo, and the meter shows that TIP is being
keyed and the base and ring are common. Turning the rig on with the key
plugged in throws a KEY ERR message. I am guessing the ring can't be common
to the base of the plug for a hand key? Thanks, 73's Mike AB7RU

[Elecraft] KX3 running warm even at very low power out

2018-12-06 Thread Mike Parkes
I have been experimenting with WSPR mode at 2-10 milliwatts of power out as
measured by the WM-2 wattmeter. I notice that the back of the KX3 heat
sinks are still fairly warm to the touch at such low power. It surprises me
that the finals would still get that warm at this level of power out. Is
that normal? I don't want to damage the radio tryin mg to xmt very low
power! :)... I have nothing to compare to except it feels at least as warm
as it did at 1 or 2 watts out. (I am using the power level output from
WSJT-X to set the power out to levels lower than what the KX3 can show
which is limited to 100 mW.)

[Elecraft] PX3 Select knob not changing KX3 freq

2018-11-26 Thread Mike Parkes
I just finished putting together a new PX3 from kit, and have it connected
to the KX3. Everything seems to be working, signals from the KX3 are
showing up, and changing the KX3 vfo changes the displayed freq on the PX3.
However, the SELECT knob on the PX3 is *not *changing the displayed freq on
either device. Thanks for any help!

I think this ES80 case with the KX3 and the PX3 and AX1 is the coolest

fronts in place) fit okay in the the ES80?

Re: [Elecraft] Intermod filter for the KX3

2018-06-03 Thread Mike Parkes
Thanks Nick for that info, I have a lot of power lines all around this apt
building and I have wondered if a lot of the noise is coming from that.
I like the idea of turning the power off, and locating the source of
noise... at least then you have the satisfaction of knowing where it is
coming from or what it is.

[Elecraft] Intermod filter for the KX3

2018-06-03 Thread Mike Parkes
Hey group
I have an issue here and am wondering if a good band pass filter would
help? I pick up so much sqawks and buzzing weird interference, grating
machine sounds, on my KX3 on all HF bands, it is horrible in my setting
(ground floor apartment in the city). I have the same issues on 2 meter
handhelds, noise all over the band, trips the squelch making it nigh
impossible to scan without the radio stopping on some ghost signal that is
only intermod. Same story with the KX3 2 mtr module though I can turn the
squelch up enough to keep the radio scanning without stopping on noise for
the most part. Is there any hope for HF? Would some sort of HF band pass
filter help my KX3? Or is the filtering in the KX3 already good enough? I
can't make it go away with the built in KX3 noise filters. There is this
one company across the street from me, some internet megalith place with
sat dishes on the roof and I wonder if some of the noise is coming from
that establishment. Anyway... thanks for any ideas... head for a park, a
mountain peak... I know... :)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M module SMA connector loosening

2018-05-26 Thread Mike Parkes
Ryan,
Another option is to use a short length of coax, sma male to sma female, to
avoid the issue of something torquing the SMA jack on the KX3 loose.
Something like this?

I experienced the same issue on my kx3 also. I was able to tighten it down
enough with a wrench to keep it snug so far, but still keep an eye on it. I
also thought abt locktite but didn't like the idea of introducing non
conductive material between the case and the jack.

Sensitivity and ergonomics are a huge improvement.
Unfortunately, I find that the SMA connector loosens very quickly. I've
already had to open the case and almost completely uninstall the
transverter once (undoing and redoing everything except the internal coax
connections) just to retighten the nut, and it's already worked itself
loose again. Does anyone have a trick they used to keep the nut from
loosening? I can't get a lot of leverage with needlenose pliers with such a
skinny nut in such close proximity to fragile components, and the thin
lockwasher doesn't seem to be very effective. I thought I had cranked it
down pretty tight, but apparently not tight enough.
I seems that it would have been better to have the separate nut on the
outside end of the connector (like the connectors on the PX3), since those
can be tightened up very easily from the outside.
One option might be to use Blue Loctite. I don't think I'd ever need to
remove it unless Elecraft comes up with a dual-band (2M and 70CM) internal
transverter to replace it, but this option would likely be permanent since
I don't think I could get enough mechanical leverage to break the Loctite
and don't think heating up the connector to loosen the Loctite would be a
good idea.
Any better ideas?

[Elecraft] KX3: SMA connector issue

2018-01-15 Thread Mike Parkes
This is a somewhat minor issue but it seemed so weird I thought I would ask
anyway.

I have a Diamond dual band vhf/uhf antenna that I bought, it has an SMA
connector, but when seated all the way on the KX3 VHF out, something is
shorting out the signal. I have to back out on the connector a little...and
I am not talking about real tight. Just finger tight onto the kx3 and. ...
no signal.

I checked out the Diamond antenna on my th-d72 ht and that is also SMA and
no problems on that radio. I have looked at the connector on the antenna
and it looks perfectly fine. I also have an SMA-S0239 adapter for another
antenna on 2 meters, and no problems with the SMA adapter on the kx3.
thanks if anyone has some thoughts on it.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - RCL REQ when trying to channel hop (scan)?

2018-01-04 Thread Mike Parkes
Thanks Don,
Channel hoping works fine, but the software appears to looking for me to
turn the main vfo to any other men channel before it will accept SCAN. Yes
I have * prefix for each channel that I want "hopped" through. Channel 17
is not the issue, I just used that as an example. I just struck me as odd
that I can't initiate the channel hopping without having to manually select
a specific channel? All I want is to start the scan, why do I have to
select a different men channel than the one that is invoked with the RCL
button. It just struck me as odd is all. Not a big deal, was just curious
why it was forcing s different channel selection before it begins channel
hopping.

Yes, the channels are all in adjacent men slots, 00-28 and all of these use
* prefix. Are you saying I have to assign CH 00 (or 99?)without the * to
get this to scan without giving the RCL REQ?

Thanks, mike

On Jan 4, 2018 1:09 PM, "Don Wilhelm" wrote:

That would be "ReCalL REQuired".
Channel Hopping is different than Scanning. For Normal Scanning to work,
you must enter a start and end frequency - except in the case of a Live
Scan. Something is missing from your memory channel 17. Does it have an
"*" in the label and is it adjacent to the other memory slots that you want
to have in the Live Scan?

For Channel Hopping or Live Scan, you store the channels in memory with an
"*" label as you have done. Then you do a memory recall for one of those
channels. The KX3 will go to that channel. Use the VFO knob to hop from
one channel to the next.

Are the channels with the (*) in adjacent memory slots? - that is a
requirement. You must have a non "*" memory on either side of the hopping
(or Live Scanning) group.
Make certain the memory for the channel you start on has an "*" in the
label.

[Elecraft] KX3 - RCL REQ when trying to channel hop (scan)?

2018-01-04 Thread Mike Parkes
I am trying to figure out what is causing RCL REQ to show up on the display
when I am trying to scan channels (channel hopping is what the manual calls
it) and not entering Scanning.
For example, I have 28 memory channels assigned with local 2 meter repeater
freqs. (*) prefix on the labels...

Turn radio on.
Vfo A selected.
Press and hold Band+/RCL.
That shows memory channel 17 flashing on the display.
Press and hold SCAN.
"RCL REQ" appears on the display for a few seconds, and the kx3 does not
begin scanning.

If I dial in *another* channel, then SCAN works. It seems weird that I have
to find a different men channel besides the one that first shows up?
What is "RCL REQ"?
Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Scan Delay

2017-12-28 Thread Mike Parkes
Please add my name to that list as a feature req for the KX3.
Channel hopping (scan) pause = x seconds/off.
By comparison, the ft-817 uses 3/5/10 seconds as scan resume options + OFF.
The kx3 resumes fairly quick after it stops on a signal. I never used
scanning on HF but it comes in handy scanning repeaters on 2 mtrs.

them, but getting them out of the battery holder (on each end end) is
difficult.

So I cut a strip of coated paper from a catalog, and wrapped that around
the end of battery on the + end and now I can pull them out easily.
Here are some pix to illustrate.

(I do have the internal charger but waiting on a 13.8v PS. )

Happy new year to all on this list!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2M SMA connector issue

2017-12-03 Thread Mike Parkes
James,
I ended up pulling out the 2 meter board and the tuner board (that was
about all it takes to get back to the SMA connector) and really tightened
the inside screw down a lot more torque than I did the first time. I think
I was over cautious when I first assembled the SMA connector. Sure didn't
want to start gouging out the opening in the case! So it has been fine
since then, however I have been a little more carful when moving the KX3
around with the sma right angle and the whip 2m/440 antenna. I think having
a right angle connector there is a little futzy. I have used the radio like
a handheld and just attached the whip antenna to the sma direct (wo the
right angle adapter) and that works fine. It is actually fun! The heaviest
biggest 2 meter ht I ever used since my first HT a Motorola brick lol/
Kinda makes me wish I had gone with the KX2 as It has a built in Mic which
is cool. But I love my KX3. I did design a little attachment that bolts to
the case and that works, but it is rinky dink. but it does make sure the
antenna is supported up from the base so that there is no way it can flop
over then. I will send a pic of that to you and the group if anyone wants
to see it.
Sri it took me a while to get back to you! I need to get my list
subscription back to individual emails, have not been able to keep up with
replies as easy when it is digest form. So Thank You! To anyone else who
replied on this issue (which isn't really an issue just a matter of making
sure the SMA connector is mounted securely).

I did notice that as I tightened it down snug that there was no evidence
that the outside flange (the flange/nut that Elecraft somehow made sure
would turn around the threads, don't ask me how they did that!) Anyway it
seems that the lock washers bite in pretty well and prevents the connector
from turning in the opening. The other option is to look for a beefier lock
washer... not sure if one of those split ring type lock washers would give
more tension? Anyway... I am shopping for some kind of external 2 meter
antenna now, so probably won't be using the whip antenna that much
eventually. Could make a j-pole. I am below ground here so it is a
challenge to get a good signal out on 2 meters. Anyway. thanks again.
probably told you way more than you wanted to read hihi.

73 Merry Christmas to you James~! hope you have a great holiday season. I
plan on Santa bringing me all kinds of ham test equipment. Signal
Generator, Freq counters antennas analyzers you name it.

[Elecraft] KX3-2M SMA connector issue

2017-11-19 Thread Mike Parkes
I ordered the *KX3*-*2M for the KX3 and installed it yesterday, seems to be
working great. However... now I have an issue with the SMA connector coming
loose one me after only a few times placing the Elecraft 2m/440 whip
antenna on and off.*

*I was pretty careful to make sure the SMA antenna connector was mounted
securely. The instructions warned about overtightening. So I tightened it
down as much as seemed right. With lock washer compressed, I would have
thought it would be fine. Apparently not. *

*So now I have to break the thing back down to get to the antenna mount and
retighten. Anyone else have issues with this and how did you resolve? I
almost wonder if some locktite would help?*

[Elecraft] Is it my KX3/antenna or is it lousy band condx?

2017-08-11 Thread Mike Parkes
Okay I am reaching our to the Elecraft enthusiasts here for some feedback
if anyone cares to chime in.
I am just getting back on the air after years away from the hobby, so I am
not that familiar with band conditions in general. It looks like the
sunspot cycle is heading for the cellar (if it isn't already there).

Recently bought a KX3 and a Buddistick vertical (like, 2 weeks ago). Love
the KX3 it is a great radio... however... so far my efforts to hear much of
anything, much less make a contact with someone, has been frustrating to
say the least. I live in an apartment and am surrounded by power lines for
one thing. The background noise level on 40 is pretty bad varies but is
s7-9 mostly. I took my setup to a nearby park and the bands were
definitely quieter. So the local manmade noise level is an issue (and one
reason I chose the KX3 was the hope that its rcvr and filtering could help
with that.)

Have yet to make a single contact, so I am just wondering if I just
happened to choose a really lousy period of solar conditions for HF? Or is
the base loaded vertical a joke?

I would love to be able to find another ham even close by just to try and
get some sort of an HF QSO even if it is with someone down the block.
...I can tune down to the AM broadcast band and was able to hear some local
AM stations. :)

Mike AB7RU

(On a side note the tuner in the KX3 is great!. That thing was able to get
a match for 80 meters on the Buddistick which was showing something like
25:1 swr. The KX3 tuner clicked and rattled for a while and found a match
to <2:1. Not sure how much actual RF is going out, probably not much... but
I was amazed it could tune to that high an SWR.)

[Elecraft] KX3 Delta-f issue solved

2017-08-03 Thread Mike Parkes
Okay I really feel dumb, I am using this outside and the way the daylight
was reflecting or something gave the appearance it was sort of lit up.
Sorry for that!

This rig is a lot of fun! Even though the bands sound sorta quiet today...

[Elecraft] KX3 delta-f led stays on? question

2017-08-03 Thread Mike Parkes
Hey my first question for the list if anyone can help a new KX3 owner
(serial #9852)... Have been slowly learning from the manual, and this is
the first issue I can't seem to figure out. Apparently I did something to
cause the Delta-f led to remain on. I am not in Split mode and there is no
rit-xit in effect. What else causes it to stay illuminated?
This is my first elecraft radio... and I am back on the air after many
years off so I am excited to see that change!

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2017-05-11 Thread Mike Parkes
Hello Elecraft group,
I don't own anything made by Elecraft yet however I have been shopping for
an HF rig to get active again (I have been off the air for a number of
years for personal reasons). I really like Elecraft's products, and I am
intrigued by the 'software definable radio' possibilities in this new breed
of amateur radio equipment design.

I have a question though, related to what can or can't be done with an
Elecraft SDR transceiver*. Is the source "code" able to be modified by the
End User?* Or is it proprietary in some way so that only those at Elecraft
can touch the code? I have been monitoring this list for while now and have
yet to read anything like, "hey check out this cool change I made on the
Elecraft KX3 code! Before the radio only did this - now it does this!" and
next thing you know there are some very cool user modified code being made
available. Like, the ham being able to add their call into the code? (see this
example

)

an error message so apologies if is a duplicate email list submission from

[Elecraft] Elecraft insurance rate?

2017-04-21 Thread Mike Parkes
Hello group,
I am considering ordering some equipment from Elecraft that totals around
$2700 or so. I just noticed on the cart check out that an "insurance
charge" will come AFTER you submit the order? Weird. Anyone have any clue
what the rate is? I don't mind paying a premium for made-in-USA products,
what I don't like are surprises and obscure policies. Why can't they just
state the rate (per X$) up front? Or do they have to consult the oracle to
find out what the insurance rate is?
