Re: [Elecraft] A way to show both "SPLIT" and "NON-SPLIT" warnings

2015-02-18 Thread Stephen Selberg
My .02
I think it's a good idea if Elecraft is willing to invest the time. I know
plenty of good operators who take the time to set split only to
accidentally bump a button that throws everything out of wack during the
rush of "a new one". Then they continue to call thinking they're in split
because they took the time to set it and ignore all the ..- .--. 'S because
in their mind, they are in split. I think having it displayed on the P3 is
an excellent idea because that is were the attention is for a lot of folks.

Also there are hams with young children who like to run into the shack and
press buttons without the operators knowledge during a bathroom break etc.
this has never happened to me Hihi.

Ultimately, yes ppl should pay attention, but if the ability is there to
help them, why not have it.

Wayne, if you build it, they will come.

VMware fusion 6 ran me something like $39 from the website. They offer a 30

Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes, what am I missing?

2014-03-21 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings to the group,

U agree...back when my son was young and just laid in his bassenett (=much
more radio time), I used to have rag chew qso's quite often on 30 and 40
meters using psk rtty & Olivia. They are a number of hams looking to rag
chew, so forget the macros and start typing away. If they respond macro
free, that's great, and if not, send your 73 and call cq again. You'd be
surprised at the amount of macro free qsos out there. Digi modes are nice
when I don't want to disturb the test of the household in the late evenings
as well.

Enjoy the digital!

Greetings,

I've taken my kx3 and accessories (mp 1 antenna, coax, radial wires, mfj

[Elecraft] Why I love my kx3...

2014-03-01 Thread Stephen Selberg
So I'm working the contest and my power went out due to high winds
approximately 30 minutes ago. No sweat. I opened up my go kit, pulled the
kx3 and external 6 amp hr battery out, connected the antenna, and I'm back
on the air. Just worked a JA station phone with 5 watts from 6 land. I love
my kx3. What's even better, all the stuff in the neighborhood that causes
me s5 noise is now gone and the noise is s1. Maybe I need to induce a power
outage during the next major contest hihi.

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna question

2014-02-13 Thread Stephen Selberg
I'm not by any means an antenna expert. All I can say is with ft5zm, they
were much stronger on the vertical than my dipole on 20 meters. Some how
some way, I was able to work them on 40 cw with the hustler vertical.

The conclusion I've come to is there's times where my dipole works better
for DX and there's times the vertical works better. Guess that's why I
still have them both up. But that's what makes Amateur Radio so fun, seeing
what works and what doesn't, and how one might be great one day, but not so
good the next. I love radio...

Enjoy experimenting...

2014-02-12 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings,

I'm sure a number of people are in the same boat as me. I plan on getting
one but am holding off for now for a few reasons. 1) finances 2) letting
the bulk of the bugs get worked out 3) waiting to hear feedback from others
4) did I mention finances...boy diapers are expensive 5) didn't order one
initially due to the delay of order fulfillment 6) as you mentioned the 2
meter module, cant decide if I want that or the amp first 7) the xyl
factor... God forbid I buy more radio gear before buying her the extremely
overpriced purse that she wants...8) something at home always needs to be
repaired/replaced taking from the radio fund...

I'm sure the ratio will move up as time goes on.

Good luck with your surgery Jim. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Re: [Elecraft] # 5607 first contact QRP!

2014-02-06 Thread Stephen Selberg
Bill,

I had kind of dropped out of radio until someone showed me qrp psk31.
Really regained my interest and brought me back into the hobby...

Since then I picked up a KX3 along with a number of other toys. After
reading some of the other replies on the thread, all I can say is I've
had a blast working qrp with the kx3 on not only CW and digital, but ssb as
well using some real "garbage" compromise antennas. Most of the fun for me
is to see who I can work qrp with such horrible antennas. Don't get me
wrong, I'd love to have a beam to help me out. But for now I'll enjoy
experimenting with different types of antennas while portable.

Anyways, congrats to the owner of kx3 #5607 and ur first qrp contact.

Re: [Elecraft] The Technician Ten Radio

2014-02-06 Thread Stephen Selberg
Bill,

I like the idea...but... Always the but... :)

I think the best thing to do, is to really encourage technician licensees
to come out to field day and get a feel of the action. I started off as a
tech at age 13 and happily enjoyed my 50 mhz + privileges. That was until
my first field day with West Valley on Loma Prieta at Charlie's property.
The only thing I could talk about after was how I needed to learn CW to get
my General ticket to work HF. Boy that was a long time ago. When did Cw go
away again? I'm so old hihi. But my point is if we encourage the Technician
hams to come out to field day and see how fun HF can be, and then Elmer
them and help them pass their general class test, the world will be open to
them. And then we can strongly urge them to drink the Elecraft kool-aid
(Wayne can I get a referral discount off a KPA500?). I guess what I'm
saying is why have a radio that will keep them where they're at and cap
their knowledge when it would be better to show them and foster their
learning to improve themselves and gain more knowledge of this wonderful
hobby.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 vs KX3

2014-01-21 Thread Stephen Selberg
Another nice thing about the kx3...

I have mine sitting in my "go kit" which is a pelican case with kx3 and
accessories. It's nice to just grab it and throw it in the car and go to
wherever I may be headed. If I'm going backpacking I just put the kx3 and
needed gear in my pack and go.

The advantage here is that I don't have to disconnect all of the cables
from the rig in the shack to go anywhere nor do I have reconnect them once
I get home. Not to mention, wherever I go, the KX3 always gets that "wow"
factor from hams and non-hams alike when they see it.

Two co-workers went out and got their ticket after I showed them the KX3
and how sweet it can be on camping trips.

Like others have said, it's nice having such a phenomenal radio in such a
small package to take anywhere.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500, KPA500, KAT3 - tests done

2014-01-10 Thread Stephen Selberg
Although I don't have a KPA500 (still dreaming as I have to buy diapers), I
feel for those experiencing the problem.

With that said, it just goes to show Elecraft's dedication to it's
customers to try and solve whatever might be causing the issue. I don't
know of any other product line, regardless of the market, ham, computer,
guns, cars, mountain bikes, etc, where the company not only listens to and
interacts with the customer, but takes the issues seriously and tries to
solve them. It's good to know that Elecraft doesn't just see us as serial
numbers and profit. Well done Wayne, Eric, and the Elecraft staff. It's for
this reason alone, regardless of performance, that as the financial picture
dictates, I will switch all my HF gear out to Elecraft. For now, I'll enjoy
my KX3 as much as I can in and out of the shack.

For those of you who look at my QRZ.com page, you'll notice I'm a huge
baseball fan. My goal this year, is to operate portable from my seat at the
ballpark with the KX3.

I wouldn't be able to combine my two favorite hobbies if wasn't for
Elecraft.

[Elecraft] OT: QRZ.com XML service

2014-01-04 Thread Stephen Selberg
Off topic, but fig'd I'd probably get a quick response here.

Been using the QRZ.com XML with HRD for over a year now without any
problems. However today, during the rtty contest, hrd wasn't populating the
fields for the other station using XML. Tried everything I could think of
and still wouldn't work. Jumped on the iPhone and issues as well. Turned
wifi off on the phone, and presto, it worked going through the cell
Internet. This leads me to believe the problem is with my router or xfinity
(my Internet provider). Tried resetting the router and all that. Even
turned the firewall off with no luck.

My question is, is anyone having the same problem today? Like I said, it's
been flawless for over a year.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and whats next from Elecraft

2013-08-19 Thread Stephen Selberg
I realize it'll never happen because of the $32 cheapies on the market. I
was more dreaming about something I know wouldn't happen. To answer another
question someone asked, I'd probably pay $400-$500 for an Elecraft HT that
I know would be much higher in quality and workmanship, have great support
and customer service, and yes, a manual I could read. I'm sure there are
plenty of US hams who would pay more money for a quality made in the USA
HT. My earlier statement was rhetorical with distant hopes of
possibility.

But for now I'll keep saving up my funds for a kpa500 to compliment the
shack. I officially drank the kool-aid when I purchased my kx3 and hope to
replace everything in the shack with elecraft gear. Is there less expensive
equipment on the market? Yes, will it come with the support that Elecraft
provides? Probably not. I'm planning on getting the KAT500 this week. Could
I get the LDG at600 and save myself $300? I could...but I'd rather spend
the extra money for something I know will work and come with outstanding
support from not only the company, but a fine group of users as well.

To the original poster of this thread, IMHO, I say get the K3 and not worry
about a K4. I know I am just as soon as I get more funds as I hate using
credit cards. I know I won't have to replace the rig in 2 years as Elecraft
works very hard to fix whatever bugs the radio might have. I don't see that
support from the yaekencom people. I like my 590, but there's some known
issues with it. Over the last 3 years, kenwood has not done much in my
opinion to fix them. Instead, I think they put all their time into the 990.
Based on my experience from this reflector, if someone has an issue or bug,
the Elecraft team immediately tries to duplicate and then fix that bug. If
only more companies operated like that. And that's why I'd pay extra for an
elecraft HT (I know, it won't happen). As was already mentioned, if a k4 or
whatever did come out, it'd probably have a different purpose or use than
the K3. So go for it! And get me one too! Hihi I can dream right?

Giving the high quality of Elecraft products, and the phenomenal customer
service, not to mention the made in the USA stamp, I think an Elecraft

[Elecraft] OT mfj 1786 loop antenna

2013-08-11 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings,

In my quest to find a low profile antenna, I've looked at a lot of
possibilities. I was curious if anyone has and experience with the MFJ 1786
loop antenna. It looks like it has decent reviews on eham. I can deal with
tuning it whenever I move the dial. I realize it's only rated to 150 so an
amp is out of the question. My other option is going with the zero five
flag pole which was mentioned in a previous thread. It looks like there's
been great success with the AlexLoop. So I'm assuming the mfj loop would
work well. But you know what they say about when one ASsumes hihi.

Thanks and 73,

Steve KS6PD

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Hearing aids, meet K3

2013-08-07 Thread Stephen Selberg
I must say, I'm glad this thread is out there. I'm in my mid 30's, and as
prior military and current law enforcement (thus the call) I have had my
fair share of "bangs" next to my ears. The xyl is already complaining about
my hearing, and I have to admit, my hearing isn't what it once was. I'm so
happy the USMC gave us hearing protection hihi. I really haven't thought
much about hearing aids but know I'm destined for them. I didn't realize
until this thread that hearing aids were that advanced. One of my concerns
was if I would be able to hear the radio in my retirement years. The
reality is I may need hearing aids before retirement years. But I feel
better about it now. I'm sure what ever aids I end up wearing will work
perfectly with my future K5 or whatever K# we're at.

Maybe by then the technology will be so advanced that the K line will sense
what we're thinking via ESP ( hint hint Wayne hihi) and convert it to CW
and vice versa.

But Gents, on a serious note, keep us younger hams informed on how hearing
aids work, or anything else for that matter, because one day we'll be there
as well, and at that point all we can do is pass down the knowledge we have
to the next generation and keep the spirit of Amateur Radio alive.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 and 30' Flag Pole Antenna Users?

2013-08-07 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings,

I actually have one of those mighty fine junk 17 foot telescoping whips as
one of my few traveling antennas for the kx3. I think this weekend ill set
it up where the flag pole would go and give it a ride! I'll fire up the 590
(one day to be replaced by a K3) and see what happens. Don't know why I
didn't think of that before (duh) other than lack of sleep, kids, work,
soccer tournaments, theme parks etc. I'm sure some know what I'm talking
about.

I'll post my results to the thread if anyone cares to hear my findings.
Sorry Elecraft if we've gone too far OT with this. Just to keep it Elecraft
related, Tom at zero five antennas said the KAT500 would suit the antenna
just fine.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and JT65 (aka digital modes) ALC "problem"

2013-07-20 Thread Stephen Selberg
Hi Stephen,

I used my kx3 for jt65 once when I first got it to see how it would work. I
can't recall what the ALC looked like tho. I bought a special signalink USB
and the jumper board to store in my kx3 go case so i wouldn't have to
disconnect all the cabling in the shack with the main signalink. As time
permits today, I'll pull everything out and set it up and let u know how
it looks on my end.

As far as the data A, I believe from what I read in the manual that it
turns off all tx/RX equalization as well as compression. I also recall
reading somewhere with the signalink USB, if the jumper board is not
installed, the mic bias menu setting should be set to off. If u have the
pre made jumper board installed mic bias can be left to on. Since u have
yours connected to the computer, I'm not sure how that setting will affect
operations.

Sorry for all the typos and poor syntax. Writing all this while my
14-month-old is running circles around me getting into everything hihi

What kind of antenna(s) are you using? Different antennas for different

Re: [Elecraft] 20 meter CW

2013-07-02 Thread Stephen Selberg
Dave,

I had the power set to 5 watts and the kx3 meter showed 5 watts rf going
out. I just think that this antenna isn't very efficient with the coil so
maybe not much RF is actually going out. the practice mode you're speaking
of, are you referring when you turn the power down to 0.0? Definitely was
at 5 watts. I started off at 3 watts but decided to bump it up more to see
how much time I could get out of these energizer lithium batteries. I'm
going to throw a wire up this evening and do some A/b tests with the MP1
antenna. Wanted to see how well it might work if I find myself
somewhere without any trees. I imagine next time I venture this way I'll
have an Alexloop.

Christian. The weird suffix is because I'm at the in-laws house in Nevada.
My home QTH is in california. I was off the air until for some years up until
April 2012. Are people still using /call area when out of their home call
area?

Hi John,

Yeah I was sending CQ de ks6pd/7 for about 10 min before my email and 5 min

I need to stick with wire antennas. Thought I'd bring this one up and give

there prob isn't going to be too much activity in the middle of the day on

Hi Greg,

I'm using a MP1 antenna with a few radials. Not ideal and I'm still not
comfortable enough with the in-laws to ask them to start hanging wires in
their trees hihi. Maybe I will later. What's the saying? Easier to ask for
forgiveness than permission?

As Murphy's law would have it, the baby woke up from his nap, so my radio

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 high pitched hum on headphone jack

2013-06-26 Thread Stephen Selberg
I had that same garbage power supply. Got rid of it and stuck it in the
garage to collect dust. It was causing all kind of noise in the shack. I
bought the alinco switching supply and have been very happy with it. I use
it primarily to power my TS-590. I like it because you can vary the voltage
between 5-15v. It's the DM-330. Very easy to pack up and take on the road
with me.

are interested in getting into the hobby. Thanks for going out to Central
park and doing that. Maybe next year ill bring my KX3 and we can operate a

[Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-14 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings,

Thinking of picking up the W2 wattmeter to go in the shack with the rest of
my gear (and future K3 and KPA500some day). I was reading the reviews on
eham, but still had a few questions I didn't see there.

I was curious about the accuracy of the meter and how well the peak hold
function works. I've played with other meters where the peak hold didn't
play well. Any input would be great.

Thanks and 73,

Steve KS6PD

Re: [Elecraft] the net

2013-06-10 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings,

I too can not hear the nets at my QTH 50 miles south of San Francisco. Only
once did I hear a station down in Southern California who was able to relay
for me, but other than that, nada. I know it's not my antenna (okay maybe
it is a little) because I work and can hear other states and dx regularly.
One day ill get a nice beam and maybe that will help.

Happy Monday and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Data A mode question for KX3

2013-06-01 Thread Stephen Selberg
Good morning,

I believe it leaves it the mic bias on but turns off the compression. If
your using a signalink USB, you need to have the mic bias off UNLESS you
are using their prefab jumper board. If you're using their board, you can
leave mic bias on. If you're using wire jumpers, it needs to be off. Hope
that helps.
