Re: [Elecraft] K3S + W11 ... boot USB issue.

2024-08-04 Thread Terry _George

Thanks Both - tried moving the boot order (no facility to delete); not
resolved the issue.

The PC boots up fine with the USB cable to the K3S disconnected.
Connect the USB cable to the radio - even if powered off - and the PC
will fail to boot up.

PC is Geekom MiniAir 12 running W11Pro 23H2. Working correctly in all
other respects. K3S has latest firmware.

Thanks again for any further help !

With the PC booted up, plug the radio USB in and all works normally.

[Elecraft] KPA500 ISSUE

2024-07-02 Thread Terry Myers
I think I have seen this discussed before, but I have not found it in the
archives.  So point me in the right direction or if you have the cause and cure
please pass it along.
The KPA500 Ser. No. between 1K & 2K or about 10 years old.  It has been in
daily use without a problem until this faithful day.
I have not been able to do a full check yet because I changed computers
sometime back and I no longer have a RS232 on the computer, so I ordered the
necessary part from Elecraft.

What I am seeing ( using FT8) is no output on 6M, on the HF bands the power
increases in steps 50W then 60W then 70W and on the next cycle it will start at
60W then 80W, 90W, etc.  In a few cycles it might get up to 500W, but it varies
as to which HF band I'm on.
I'm thinking is it's microprocessor brain got scrambled with the RF.  I can't
check until I get the cable, its on order.  If you had this problem, was more
than a memory flash needed.  Maybe a few parts replaced, etc?  Did you discover
any preventive measures?
If so, let me hear from you.

[Elecraft] KX3 filters oscillating issue

2023-01-20 Thread Terry Griffey via Elecraft
I have a fully loaded KX3 with the roofing filter. With the AF set to 12, the
RF set to 0 and the monitor level at 19, when I start closing the filter (APF
OFF) it begins to oscillate at bandwidth 1.8k until it gets down to .05k and
stops. This happens on every band. With (APF ON) the oscillation begins at
1.8k but changes timbre as the filter is closed to .05k but never stops. This
has been happening since I got the transceiver back from service a few months
ago. Is this a setting of some kind that got reset during service? Is there
something I need to change? Thanks for your input. 73!

I assembled my k2/100 quite some time ago. I finally used it on ssb. I was

My question is this: what can I do to change it to more of a ragchew style
of audio?

Dan's signature below is that of a musician. Always your phone number after

Back in my "professional" music days, someone would ask one of my band

As a ‘semi retired’ professional jazz musician (bassist-upright) I
particularly appreciated the analogy. During this last field day I was running
my KX3 and explaining to my logging assistants about pitch matching. The spot
control does a good job,but sometimes I needed to tweak it to get in the other
guys’ passband. I can’t wait to use this on my K4,whenever that might arrive!
Maybe we should start an Elecraft band… last year I was supposed to go to Spain
and do some gigs and had planned to take the KX2…maybe next summer.

[Elecraft] K4 Reports

2020-12-02 Thread Terry Brown
I know that this group consists of many of us who are very loyal Elecraft
customers, many who ordered a K4 in the first hours orders were being taken.
My order went in Oct. 1, 2019, so it may be March before I see mine.

My guess is a few of us have received their K4’s but are reluctant to post
anything about them because of the avalanche of questions that will flood their
inboxes.

I wasn’t an Elecraft user when the K3 came out, but I suspect the same thing
happened then.

It sure would be nice to find some way to get user reports of the K4 without
subjecting the poster with a flood of questions.

Re: [Elecraft] 2m internal transverter PTT out

2020-10-20 Thread Terry Price
Raj,

There are two ways to deal with this.

First you can use DIGOUT1 to key an external relay which controls where the
common PTT goes, either to an HF amp or a 2m amp. In the menu, set DIGOUT1
to on for 2m only. A small, low current 12v relay connected between 12VDC
and pin 11 on the 15pin HD connector on the back. Let the common of the
relay go to the PTT jack, NC to your HF amp and NO to your 2m amp.

Second is DIGOUT0 which when KIO3 is set to TRN or HF-TRN goes low when you
select a transverter band (anything about 6m). This could also key a small
12v relay to steer PTT the proper direction. As above.

Hope this helps.

[Elecraft] K4 sound card capability

2020-10-04 Thread Terry Brown

[Elecraft] Follow up KXPA100 low power problem

2020-09-07 Thread Terry Brown
I first want to thank all those who responded to my post. In a follow up
email it was suggested that I check for voltage drop in the Elecraft 12v fused
power cord.

Sure enough, at key down, voltage dropped from 14v to 10.5v. I connected a
10ga power cord directly from my PS to the amp. Voltage at key down was 13.72
volts and the amp put out full power.

Time to troubleshoot the fused power cord!

[Elecraft] KXPA100 Power Out Issue

2020-09-07 Thread Terry Brown
I have noticed over the past weeks that my KXPA100 will not put out any more
than 70-80 watts when I am running my KX3 showing 100 watts output. The
attenuator is not on. I have two antennas. One is a 3 element yagi that is
below 1.2:1 on all bands without the tuner, so when I tune, it just tweaks
it. Still only 80 W out. My other antenna is a MyAntennas 10-80 EFHW, also
resonant below 1.5:1 on 80 and 40, the primary bands I operate on. I get 70
watts out on that antenna. Everything is grounded properly. This is a
fairly recent issue.

I have tried the amp with my KX2 as well, to make sure it is an amp problem
and not a radio problem, and I get the same result of reduced power output.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Terry

[Elecraft] OT: RF Choke question

2020-07-02 Thread Terry Brown
I need some advice from someone with experience in dealing with RF problems.
I have an in-home elevator that is putting out RF hash in harmonic locations
on the ham bands, especially 80 meters. I've gotten tired of dealing with
the noise. I have both a 240V circuit and a 120V circuit feeding the
control panel. The 120V circuit powers the cab lights and elevator
switches. The 240 feeds the motors the raise and lower the elevator. The
cab is 3 ft. by 4 ft. so it isn't a small residential elevator. We had our
house designed for it when we built two years ago.

I have two 4 in. inside diameter RF toroid chokes that I bought specifically
for the ham bands. I plan on putting these RF chokes on the electrical
supply lines for each circuit right before they enter the control panel to
see if it helps my RF issue. I have two questions.

1. Is rapping 10 turns of the electrical wires of each circuit around
the toroid enough?

2. The electrical wires are individually connected to the control
panel. In the case of the 120V, there is a white, black, and ground. In
the case of the 240, there is 3 reds, a black and a ground. Do I have to
wrap the ground wires of these circuits around the toroid as I do the other
electrical wires?

It will be interesting to see how much better my K4 will be when I get it,
in rejecting RF noise, compared to my KX2, KX3, and K2.

Thanks and 73,

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] Raspberry Pi Ham Programs

2020-06-24 Thread Terry Brown
If any of you are interested in using a Raspberry Pi for qrp/field
operations, there is a great source of information for setting up you Pi for
that. If you have not discovered KM4ACK's YouTube channel, you might
consider doing so. I have been a Patreon member of his group and have
followed Jason's (KM4ACK) development of Pi ham software over the last six
months. He recently completed his latest version of "Build-a-pi V3". It
has probably 20 ham programs from many digital programs, to ham clock, to
logging programs, to propagation programs..the list goes on.

The remarkable thing is you install everything from one command line in the
terminal window of the pi and his video tells you how to do that. It takes
a Raspberry Pi 4 about 4 hours to install all the programs.

You will need to flash a clean copy of the latest Buster on an SD card. It
also helps to connect an ethernet cable from your router to the Pi, but you
can do it with the wireless network connection.

This is the culmination of almost a year's work by Jason. He has learned as
he had gone, and it is truly a remarkable effort. He has a lot of other
videos as well that relate to the operation of the Pi.

73,

Terry

[Elecraft] K4 update, really?

2020-03-23 Thread Terry Brown
At this point, I don’t think being concerned about when the K4 is going to
arrive at our shacks so we can “play radio” is a consideration.

What we all need to do is wish Wayne and Eric well as they navigate uncharted
waters.

Elecraft is a great company that makes great products from great people. It’s
not a big company like the Japanese radio producers.

I suspect Wayne and Eric don’t have deep pockets and require products being
shipped consistently to remain profitable.

They have a large investment in development of the K4 including all the parts
ready to go into the K4, but no product to ship.

This is no picnic for them as they struggle to keep Elecraft going.

I am sure all of us who have prepaid various amounts for a K4 have created a
pool of money that hopefully will help. Let’s just hope that there are enough
of us retired “old farts” who will be able to weather the financial storm and
not request a refund of deposits as I am sure will happen with working hams who
have lost their jobs.

I, for one, send my best wishes to Eric and Wayne and all the great Elecraft
Team. When my K4 arrives is immaterial.

[Elecraft] Remote Operation of K4

2020-01-20 Thread Terry Brown
I have watched many of Eric’s videos on YouTube about the K4 and how easy it
will be to operate remotely through its Ethernet port.

I have a rather naive question, because I’ve not seen much written about this
with other rigs.

How would you power up and power down the K4 remotely? I can’t imagine leaving
the rig powered for days on end waiting for remote operation.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] K4 Shipping Delay

2020-01-15 Thread Terry Brown
I am one of those far down the list in the first shipping group. When I read
the notice from Eric and Wayne, about the new shipment dates for the K4, I was
reminded of a comment from my builder a year and a half ago when our new house
was about 4 months behind schedule.

He said, we could have finished your house on time but it would have been
finished by subcontractors who don’t provide the quality we insist on.
Besides, and this is the important part regarding the K4, he said, “ I know you
are frustrated, but the day you move in and can begin to enjoy the quality of
your home as long as you live here, the delay won’t mean anything.”

He was absolutely right. When I walk around my new home and look at how well
it’s made and the incredible quality of the finish work, the delay is
meaningless. We all who are anxiously awaiting the K4, will feel the same way
once it arrives at our homes.Besides, it will be a better more refined
radio in May than it would have been if shipped now.

[Elecraft] Visit to Elecraft HQ worthwhile?

2020-01-13 Thread Terry Brown
I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

I had been an SSB operator exclusively since I became a ham in 1982. I went QRT
for 7 years, because SSB grew stale for me. A little over 3 years ago I decided
to dust off my incredibly rusty/nonexistent CW skills and bought a preowned K2.
I had never heard of Elecraft before I reconnected with my CW friends who all
had Elecraft rigs.

Now I own a KX2 for portable use, KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 for my base station.
At 72 years old I decided to treat myself to my first world-class rig by
becoming a member of the first shipment group for the K4.

The reason I give this background is because my 4 year journey to become a
dedicated cw rag chewer, comfortable at 20-30 wpm came about in part because
of my love of operating my Elecraft rigs. My renewed love of ham radio and CW
is intertwined with Elecraft and with what Wayne and Eric have created.

I will be driving from OR to So. Cal. in March on Hwy. 1. I see it runs
within a stone’s throw of Elecraft’s HQ in Watsonville.

For those of you who have been there before, is it a worthwhile stop? I don’t
expect to see Eric or Wayne there if I stop, but at a minimum I would like to
thank their fine staff for creating what has become an integral part of
renewing my love of our great hobby.

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] Elecraft K4

2019-10-02 Thread Terry Brown
Hello All,

This is not a technical post but more of a philosophical viewpoint about
buying new ham gear.

I first became acquainted with Elecraft gear after many years using ICOM
rigs. I had been QRT for about 8 years and came back to the hobby
determined to dust off the CW I never used, and become proficient. With
that decision I bought a used K2 and discovered CW and QRP. As I continued
to develop my CW proficiency, I purchased the KX3, PX3, and KXPA 100.
Later, for portable ops I bought a KX2. I am very happy with these rigs,
and realistically, they are really all I would ever need to enjoy many years
of CW operation.

When the K4 was announced, I first thought that I might try to pick up a
used K3S and Panadapter from someone purchasing a K4. I thought, "I didn't
need to spend all that money" that a K4 would cost.

The more I thought about it, I got to thinking that I have never owned a
World Class Radio. I am 71 years old. I can financially afford a K4. I
decided that even though what I have would have suited me just fine for the
rest of my life, I wanted the joy of unboxing, learning, and operating what
will be probably the finest rig Elecraft has ever made, and perhaps one of
the finest rigs ever made. As a result, I put a deposit down on a new K4
yesterday.

For those of you who have owned the K3 and K3S when they came out, you can
understand and appreciate having the best. I am looking forward to having
that experience, too.

Wayne and Eric have created something very special in Elecraft. They truly
try to meet their customer needs, and have created a series of Radios that
are technically some of the best made, and have the advantage of
upgradability. Their customer service is second to none; but you all know
that.

Anyway, just thought I would share my thoughts and look forward, as many of
you are, to being able to experience the K4.

73,

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] KX3 and the Sigmalink USB

2019-06-08 Thread Terry Basom
The SLMODKX3 jumper module for using the Signalink USB with a KX3 or KX2,
has a DC blocking capacitor built in.

Can anyone tell me where it is in the circuit and a value? It eliminates
turning off the mike bias in the menu when using the Signalink USB. I am
just using jumpers and would like to put in the capacitor to eliminate
having to turn off mike bias and having to remember to turn it back on.

Don,

I profusely apologize for the delay and lack of communication. As Don, W3FPR
pointed out, Don was and I am a part time employee. For a whole host of
reasons, that I won't go into at this time, the transition has been somewhat
slow but I am making progress.

The amount of backlog has been overwhelming to an extent. But with Don's
help we have managed to whittle much of it down.

I am not making excuses for the lack of communication and will improve my
response as I work through this transition. Poor Don is supposed to be
retired and still provides excellent support in my absence or heavy
workload.

As he noted, my wife and I are on vacation well off of the grid. I do have
some wifi here (sitting at the Tiki bar as I write this) but I am pretty
much off the grid until next week.

I do totally love the Elecraft customer service paradigm and will continue
to strive for that plateau. But it will take me a little time as I still
work a fulltime profession as well as this part time venture plus family
blah blah blah.

If I remember right, your rig was number 2 or 3 on my priority list and I
will get right on it as soon as I return. I appreciate your patience in the
interim and will be in touch soon.

written for Elecraft products. Fred passed away yesterday evening from
heart failure. He is survived by this wife Katie and daughter Elizabeth.

I wonder if a better answer would be to push for versions of the

many of us would worry about spending 25 quid on a little computer

[Elecraft] KX3 vs. K3 updated or K3S Question

2019-03-24 Thread Terry Brown
For the folks that have both a KX3 and KXPA100 and either a K3 updated or K3S,
for CW operation, what have you found from a technical point of view are the
advantages of the K3 or K3S over the KX3?

I have almost bought an updated K3 several times, but as a CW operator I am not
sure I can justify it.

I also have the PX3 and love it and so I’d need a P3 as well.

Would be nice to have 100 Watts in one box, but I also own a KX2 for QRP and
use the KX3 line as my base station.

The thing that might swing things is if the K3/K3s was technically a lot better
for CW. I can’t convince myself that it is.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks

Terry

[Elecraft] FT8 Transmit Problem

I'm having trouble with the I/F between Windows 10 and the USB sound card in
my upgraded K3. I've checked and the Sound Card settings in Windows 10 and
they are exactly as shown in Chapter 10 of Fred Cady's book. It receives and
decodes FT8 perfectly but can't transmit. When I hit the "Tune" button on
the WSJT-X screen the red "PTT" light comes on but there is no input signal
to the K3 and hence no RF output. What am I doing wrong?

[Elecraft] RPi logging software?

2019-01-02 Thread Terry
I have been trying to get CQRlog to run on RPi, no-joy.  Using Raspbian
Stretch OS and would like to keep it.  CQRlog does not seem to like
Debian OS.  This is my first venture into Linux OS so it may well be the
Operator. Hope to get other Ham programs to run as well.  If you have
CQRlog running on Raspbian, please share the process.

Is there another logging Linux program that does work well under Stretch?

I do have plenty of WIN machines around but that is not the way I want
to go for this project.

Thanks for the constructive help in advance.

[Elecraft] Interface cable question

2018-11-10 Thread Terry Brown
I just purchased a miniHFPA2 amplifier to use with my KX2 when I am in the
field and don't want to lug around my KXPA100. I need to build/buy an
interface cable that will go from the ACC jack on the KX2 to the RCA PTT
jack on the miniHFPA2 amp. Can anyone tell me where to get an interface
cable or if there is any other interfacing need besides connecting the four
conductor plug's sleeve to the ground of the RCA plug and ring 2, key out to
the center conductor?

[Elecraft] Text decode issue

2018-11-04 Thread Terry Brown
I have a KX3 and PX3, and KXPA100. When I was first getting my CW back up
to speed, I used the CW decode on occasion. I rarely use it anymore and as
a result don't pay a lot of attention to it. I have noticed, however, that
lately, no matter what level the RX THRn is set to, the CWT never pulses and
nothing ever decodes. The filter is at its narrowest setting.

I am stumped as to why decode doesn't work and I would appreciate any
thoughts you all might have.

[Elecraft] K3 Win4k3Suite Question

2018-10-29 Thread Terry
I am looking to purchase a preowned K3. I currently own a KX3 that I have
interfaced to Win4K3Suite.

The K3 that I am considering buying has the two 9 pin Din plugs in the back,
one ACC and one DATA.

I am not financially able to purchase a P3 currently and want to use the
spectrum scope on the Win4K3Suite to do that for me.

What do I need to have to be able to interface the K3 to Win4K3Suite in
order to get the spectrum scope to work.

[Elecraft] K3s vs KX3 Quedtion

2018-10-21 Thread Terry Brown
My first Elecraft rig was the K2, I then bought what has become my base
station; a fully loaded KX3, KXPA 100 and PX3.

I got tired of all the cable interface problems with KXPA not working and the
cursor not showing up on the PX3 if I took the KX3 portable (always a lot of
replugging and reseating cables to finally get it to work. )

I bought a KX2 for portable ops as a result.

I guess I’ve drunk too much Elecraft Koolaid because I keep looking at the K3s.
To buy a fully outfitted K3s and P3 would set me back about $6k. I am 99
percent a cw operator. Once I became proficient in CW several years ago, all
digital modes ceased to be of interest, as did SSB.

So with that background, I would like someone with both the K3s and KX3 to
tell me what features the K3s has over the KX3 that would realistically make
that $6,000 purchase worth doing.

Thanks so much!

Re: [Elecraft] OT-Junk Mail & Spam Robo Calls

2018-08-14 Thread Terry Schieler
I use commercial spam solutions for relief from internet email spammers. Lots
of them out there. That's all well and good. The REAL problem for me are robo
calls to my home phones and cell phone. I listed both phones on the State of
Missouri and the Federal *No Call Lists* years ago. That worked ok for a
while, then totally spiraled out of control. Spammers don't pay any attention
to the *List* and violations are not enforced.

I found a fix in an app called *NOMOROBO* No More Robo (calls). After you
sign up for the service, their server spots the fingerprints of incoming spam
telephone robo calls on your phone line. My phone rings a partial ring (.5
sec?) then the software at the server end sucks the call off my line and adds
it to their national database blacklist. The Caller Id is still displayed on
my TV screen, but before I can get my butt out of my chair, the ring stops,
telling me not to bother with the call, it's spam.

I can't remember how many years I've used NoMoRobo but I was an early adopter
and it has been working beautifully for probably 10 years now. The idea was
hatched by a couple of guys during a contest to find a solution to annoying
Robo Calls (necessary because your local telco doesn't want to help inhibit the
use of their paid services). You don't need to load your *white list* phone
numbers. There is a free version of NoMoRobo and a paid version. So far, I
have seen no need for the paid version. In all this time I only had two
callers get wrongly *captured* by the spam software and both were vendors I use
who had recently changed their phone number. Calls from my doctor's
appointment office, Trash Hauler, etc come right through.

While not affiliated with the firm that offers this (I wish I were) I recommend
looking it over and deciding for yourself if it suits your needs:

Hi Dave, + rest of list

I've not seen your "Elycraft", but we … both ElecraftCovers (Rose, N7HKW) and
me … get lots of e-mail from people wanting to "fix" elecraft.com and bring
us more business. I expect Elecraft also gets these same offers.

Both of us, for several reasons, need to maintain an old-fashioned wired phone
line. We have had the same number for about fifty years and it's published and
used from all over the world.

Here's what seems to (partially) work for us; we have an answering machine in
a speaker-phone that's audible throughout the house. In addition, our satellite
TV provider is connected to the TV set … which is usually on (;-) … and the TV
screen displays caller ID info. Perhaps ten percent of the calls are legit.

Both of us have Verizon cell phones and get -many- calls from spoofed numbers …
usually in our 406 area and often using a "local" number. Rose gets many calls
related to her Elecraft case and cover business that she -must- answer. She's
had three today … with two being spoofed.

We both use G-Mail as our e-mail provider and to G-mail's credit, we get very
little SPAM. We also use Norton ... wouldn't be without it. Our internet
provider (Century Link) is via cable.

FWIW

Exactly Don. Thanks for that comment. That's what the boys at Elecraft
recommended when K3S was first announced and we had a field day (pun) with
remarks about plural, etc when guys tried to match the logo. You'll notice
that Wayne always uses K3S now on this reflector. I am still trying to figure
out what the K3(s), the K3[s] and K3*s guys are trying to say.

Don't try to replicate the K3S marketing logo as you can't do it with the font
here on the reflector. Please just use K3S.

Grant,

I always use "K3S" and "K3", and add a lower case "s" for plural.
If you look at the logo, yes, the trailing "S" is smaller than the "K3",
but not small enough to be lower case (1/2 the height of the caps).

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day rig experience

2018-06-14 Thread Terry Hart G3VFO via Elecraft
Hi Guys.

For what it's worth, I find it interesting how the term "Roofing filter" has
changed a bit over time and with different 'ownership'.

Personally, I first came across the term in around 1966 as a junior design
engineer working on the Redifon R550 series of HF receivers. I understood then
that the term "roof" referred to the "top of the house" filter used to provide
the first measure of protection against adjacent unwanted signals.

These and other similar HF receivers used an up-conversion architecture, and
the R550/551 employed a first IF at 38 MHz with the local oscillator running 38
to 68 MHz. The bandwidth of this filter, which followed the first mixer, was
around 15 KHz as I recall. The second IF was at 1.4 MHz (or 1.6 MHz in other
similar designs) and featured a number of selectable crystal filters typically
providing close-in band-widths from around 200Hz to 12 KHz. Employing a first
IF above 30 MHz shifts the first image into the VHF spectrum and allows the use
of a 30 MHz low pass filter in the front end, with sub-octave band pass filters
to provide a measure of front-end selectivity. We would have loved to provide
close-in selectivity at the first IF frequency and so avoid a down-conversion
to the second IF, but achieving the required passband /stopband characteristics
just was (is) not possible at 38 MHz. However, decent close in selectivity
(passband and stopband) can be provided with cr
ystal filters at around 9 MHz or thereabouts, and many of the earlier purely
analogue designs of amateur equipment took advantage of this, including TenTec.
I do not personally view this particular application as a roofing filter as is
not protecting further stages of selectivity.t it All now ancient
history...things have moved on a bit since then! Can anyone trace the term
further back in time?

However, It seems to me that the term "roofing filter" still makes perfectly
good sense in the context of the K3 design, with the selectable crystal filters
providing the maximum possible (mode dependent) selectivity protection in front
of the final IF, even if that is now implemented using DSP techniques!

Hello Wes,

I took a look. Both designs are using the idea of "roofing filter" to refer to
up-conversion radios similar to the use of up-conversion 3khz filters as
roofing filters in Icom radios.

"Roofing filter" (a mode specific filter after the first mixer including narrow
cw filters) only makes sense in the context of the history of superhet design
and in particular the use of one broad 15 khz first I-F (so that all modes may
pass through it) typical of all Japanese radios until recently. Calling a 45
mhz filter at the first I-F a "roofing filter" as noted in the info you sent
entirely misses the point of what roofing filter means. Or, to put it another
way, all Ten-Tec radios had roofing filters in them (and were ssb and cw only)
well before the term roofing filter was coined! Which is why an Omni C will
out perform any wide (15 khz) first I-F Japanese radio, even those built well
after the 1980 vintage Omni C.

Unless mode specific up-conversion crystal filters can be made and as narrow as
200 hz (this is possible with down-conversion) then "roofing filter" and up
conversion doesn't make sense historically or in reality.

Actually, Icom says that did it with 1.2khz filter at 64 mhz in the Icom 7851,
though I'm not convinced the filter is that narrow, and 1.2khz is far from the
200hz filter that my K3 has in it (however, the placement of this filter is why
the 7851 is among the best radios in Sherwood's chart, on cw).

It is possible to make very narrow and precise crystal filters as narrow as the
200 hz inexpensively, and this is the point of having multiple roofing filters
at the first I-F. So, this is the origin of the term roofing filter---in
comparison to the barn-door up conversion first I-F.

 Certainly not to disparage the
K3(S) architecture (I have two of them) there is nothing inherently wrong

Andy,
Pick up a copy of the DVD "North Atlantic Crossing". Two young men used
what appeared to be an Icom HF rig for long distance communications on HF
air bands to contact various European airports on their route to Norway.
They installed a large, salt water fishing reel in the modified, single
engine Mooney, complete with stranded copper antenna wire. When time to
use an HF band, they cranked out just enough (pre-marked) wire from the
fishing reel to hit the resonant frequency. I can't recall where/how the
antenna wire exited the aircraft but got the impression that, among other
mods (extra capacity fuel tanks, etc) the antenna device was approved for
that flight.

If it were as simple as you suggest then I think a few of us would be doing
it. Picking up banners with an aircraft in flight is a skill that most
pilots don't have. It would be far better to use a retractable antenna.
However, a legal installation of any sort of antenna extension/retraction
mechanism on an aircraft with a standard airworthiness cert would be a
significant challenge.

[Elecraft] OT: Grounding Question

2018-04-25 Thread Terry Brown
I am building a new house. It has a UFER foundation ground. I will be putting
ground rods around half the perimeter of the house between my shack and tower.

No. 4 solid copper wire will connect all my ground rods together and will tie
to the UFER ground in two places.

I am having a sprinkler system installed and it would be possible to put my
ground rods and connecting wire in the same trench next to the 1 in. Water
line.

I live in an exposed area and my 35 ft. tower (which will have 3 ground rods
around its base and radial ground wires) will be tied into the perimeter ground
and UFER system as well; as will all my Elecraft station equipment.

If I get a lightning hit, will close proximity to my sprinkler lines destroy
them? How far should my ground system be from m my main sprinkler system line
if it is an issue?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] Update- Continuing Issues with PX# in the mix with KPXA100 and KX3

2018-03-16 Thread Terry Brown
Hello All,

As an example of the flaky behavior of my problem, since sending my post to
the group a few minutes ago, I unplugged the double connectors that go from
the PX3 to the KX3 and reversed them. I then tried to turn on the PA from
the KX3 menu, and nothing happened. The KXPA100 would not turn on and the
menu would go back to PA off.

I reversed the cables back to their regular configuration when I was having
the problem, and now everything works as it should.

Help!

[Elecraft] Continuing Interface Issues with PX3 in mix with KPXA100 and KX3

2018-03-16 Thread Terry Brown
I have had continuing interfacing issues since I got my PX3. I originally
had a problem with the KXPA100 not tuning or turning off a few seconds after
turning it on from the KX3 menu with the PX3 in the circuit. I have triple
checked the connections repeatedly and pressed in the connectors until my
finger hurt. Most of the time the setup works, but others not.

This morning all I did was disconnect the computer interface connector from
the PX3 and plugged it into my KX2 for a long overdue firmware update. That
went fine. When I plugged the cable back into the PX3, and I tuned the KX3,
the tuner would tune, the receive sensitivity would go up as expected
showing sig peaks at S9 then would drop back to S2. It was like the KX3
went deaf. Before this happens, the Antenna, On, and Auto LEDs are on the
Amp. When sensitivity drops, the KXPA100 has the TX LED come on and stay on
too. Once I saw a fault light go on but not now.

I have attached the KXPA 100 to the KX3 directly and the KXPA100 works fine
as it should. I have no idea what is happening, but this flaky behavior has
gone on since I got the PX3 and now, this new problem has arisen. Very
frustrating.

I would appreciate any help I could get for this issue.

Thanks so much,

Terry

[Elecraft] Win4K3Suite mic interface question

[Elecraft] Fldigi issue

2018-01-26 Thread Terry Brown
Hello All,

I had Fldigi setup fine on my desktop computer before I had to pack it away
8 months ago for a move. I am predominantly a CW ops and have just used my
Begali HST III to key my KX3. I am currently enrolled in the CWOps Academy
level 2 class. Which I am enjoying very much. I am currently sending and
receiving at about 25 wpm and my instructor mentioned that we could look at
Fldigi to see how we are sending.

I have a SignaLink USB interface that I have, I think, correctly connected
to my laptop. My KX3 is connected to my KXPA100 and the usb interface from
the KXPA100 to my laptop. The cord coming out of the "Radio" connection at
the rear of the SignaLink is attached to the Mic input on the KX3, and the
"Spkr" connection to my phones connection on the KX3.

I have Fldigi RigCat interface and correct config file working between
Fldigi and my rig. As I turn the VFO, the display in Fldigi moves
accordingly.

I receive signals in CW fine and Fldigi decodes them fine in the upper
window. When I click in the lower window, I can type text with my keyboard
for transmission, then transmit them through my rig.

All those features work fine. The problem is, when I key the keyer which is
plugged into my Key input on the KX3, nothing shows up in Fldigi. My keyer
transmits code as normal, but nothing shows up on either Fldigi screen.

Perhaps that is the way it should work; with only keyboard, but I am stumped
as to how to set things up so I can see my keying in Fldigi as my instructor
suggests.

Thanks for any input you can give me.

Very 73's,

Terry de N7TB

[Elecraft] Simple threads that take on a life of their own

2018-01-13 Thread Terry Brown
It’s interesting that sometimes a simple thread, usually with a very definitive

as long as Eric is tolerant of such threads covers a lot more topics. In the

Apparently some LED light bulbs make enough noise that they desense the garage

These bulbs are specifically low-RFI.

I have no more information. For all I know, they fix the garage door RFI by
moving the noise to 14.300 MHz.

My last cruise on Royal Caribbean was, I believe, Sovereign of the Seas (?). I
had no plans to actually operate on the ship, but I met the Captain during the
opening night reception and we had a chat. Upon finding out my interest in
amateur radio, the Captain said "hey, you'd like to meet "Per", our Chief Radio
Officer (also a ham). We had a nice visit. The next day a courier appeared at
my stateroom door with a message from the Chief Radio Officer offering me a
personal tour of the ship's radio room. I was let up to the bridge by a
steward and Per, the Radio Officer took me into the radio room where there
walls full of older HF gear which he quickly told me they don't use much
anymore (mostly VHF and satellites now). He let me sit at the gear and tune
around. I got some nice photos too. Huge signals from everywhere and lots of
fun.

Never hurts to ask, even if you've brought no gear. Per and I carried on an
email exchange for a few months after that.

setups for my tower. I don't want to climb a tower anymore and I am trying to
keep my XYL happy by not putting up so tall a tower. I know it won't perform as
well as before.

Four horizontal ft. of my roof will be 23 ft. above the ground. The peak to the
east is about 12 ft. from the tower. The rest of the roof is 20 ft. from the
ground. The yard slopes downward to the east. The house is high on a hill
looking east. To the west the ground is gently sloping up.

I know my proposed free height (8-11 ft.) above the roof isn't ideal. Since I
already have 5 sections of tower, I want to try to use them. Here are my two
ideas.

1. Putting up two 10 ft. sections and a top 9 ft. section of Rohn 25G. I will
mount a new Mosley TA 33-JR. on it with a mast putting the beam 2 ft. above the
top section. This would put the beam about 31 ft. above the ground. My
rotator is my reconditioned Alliance HD-73. I estimate the total weight of
tower and beam at just under 200 lbs.

I would like to put it on a tilt over base, either custom built or the Rohn if
it can take the load.

The tower would be attached to the house at the 13 ft. level, leaving 16 ft.
unguyed. I would have a pulley system at the 12 ft level of the house to lower
the tower.

Is this setup something that will work? I am concerned about the load on the
hinge on the base as the tower tilts over.

2. Put up one section of 10 ft. tower and a top section. Put an aluminum mast
in place that sticks up 12 ft. above the top section. Everything else is the
same. This reduces the weight a bit and has only 6 ft of unguyed tower. I
just don't know how well 12 ft of mast above the top section will work.

I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me.

Thanks!

Terry

Re: [Elecraft] Drone antenna launch Field portable! Changed topic.

2017-08-31 Thread Terry Schieler
I have been using a Blade CX2 RC helicopter to fly antenna wires up above tree
tops for quite a few years now. I had added an LED nav light kit to the CX2
(red, green plus white landing light) and it runs off a simple on/off toggle on
the transmitter. I installed a small servo on the belly of the chopper that
uses the servo arm to pull a piano-wire pin out of a U-shaped block of balsa
wood. The fish line antenna leader is hooked over the piano wire. I installed
a "Y" adapter to the navigation light circuit on the chopper and used it to
fully activate the add-on (parallel) servo, which released the antenna lead-in
line when it was properly hovering above the target tree. So, when I flipped
the nav light toggle to ON, the hook wire pulled back and released the fish
line. Took some experimenting with weights on the leader line to plow through
some of the dense branches, but finally got it pretty consistent. This started
years before the word "drone" was common in R/C.

Plain old radio-controlled helicopter (remember those?)

John,

Do use a separate receiver in order to activate the release or is there an
extra slot on the drone receiver?

I'm assuming your using a bind - n - fly drone. If it's home brew with your
own receiver then it probably has a spare slot that you can program a switch to?

Hi Terry,

I have actually disabled all those settings in WSJT-X. I don't let WSJT-X put
the rig into data mode (from the Radio tab - MODE = NONE). I don't remember
the power settings by band on the Audio tab within the settings dialogue. I
setup my KX3 ahead of time for digital modes (using a macro) and leave it that
way for all data modes (FLdigi, WSJT-X, etc.).

Do you have any of these options selected? Have you tried disabling them,
setup your sound card, etc. as per Don's et al. instructions and then changed
bands back and forth?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Odd ALC behavior

2017-08-07 Thread Terry Schieler
I have been watching this thread carefully since it began, and, combined with
my experiences over this past weekend, am now more confused than ever. Don,
W3FPR recently (again) gave very succinct instructions for getting a good
starting audio point for the ALC readings. I had previously not been able to
get the "four bars solid, fifth bar flickering" on my K3S for JT65 for weeks
now, no matter what I did. Bought all the books and read all the articles
(Yes, they reference rigs that work differently than my K3S. Understood. I
get it) Yesterday I decided to follow Don's instructions (as bolstered by
those from Bob, K4TAX). Thanks to both fine gents.

I set:
K3S Mode to Data A
Band: 20 Meters (14.076)
Windows 7 Audio level OUT from computer to about 50% of scale (USB CODEC)
Line-IN level on the K3S to 30
PWR slider in the WSJT-X software to about mid-range
Set the K3S power out to 30 with rig's PO control

During a TEST transmit (using the TUNE button in the software), I adjusted the
WSJT PWR slider (downward) on the software to finally achieve the four bars
solid and fifth bar flickering. I then switched to normal TX, the ALC reading
held fast (four solid fifth flicker) and I made a couple of QSOs. Life was
good. Power was still at 30, COMP 0 as set. Seemed that Don and Bob's
comments were spot on. I thought my K3S was good to go for all K3S digital
modes, so I touched nothing. Then I changed bands with the K3S band switch to
15 meters. Did a test TX on 15 with the Mode (Data A), Power Out (30) and
Comp (0), Software PWR slider settings still untouched. But upon *normal* TX
on 15 M the ALC had jumped to 6 solid bars. Nothing I tried would get it back
to the desired "4 solid+5th flicker" on 15M.

Then I went back to 20M. But, the ALC there had also changed and was now 6
solid bars. It had changed somehow. Power out still 30, Comp 0, etc. Also,
now the WSJT PWR slider had moved back up above its previous mid-scale settings
as well. I had carefully touched nothing but the BAND and TX TEST switchs on
the K3S.

Aren't the DATA A settings saved per band after doing these adjustments for
digital modes? Why would a simple band change alter the rig's ALC setting as
well as the PWR slider in the software? Did the new Freq somehow change the
Window's Line Out and the software's PWR slider? Should I expect to have to
reset the settings every time I use one of the JT and FT digital modes?

I think I'll try bouncing signals off commercial tow boats on the Mississippi
River instead. Must be easier. "CQ the Rhonda May...Calling the Rhonda
May, Over". ;o)

[Elecraft] FW: OT A/C RFI

2017-07-19 Thread Terry Schieler
More interest here than I expected on this, so I've decided to post my
direct response to Erik here as well.

Terry, WØFM

Hi Erik,

I just replaced my two 20 year old Lennox units with 4.0 Ton and 3.5 Ton
Trane units. Before the installers left I asked for a chance to check the
radios in the shack for RFI. The AC compressors are outside the basement
shack wall and the coils are inside about ten feet from the radios and feed
lines. Attic antennas all around for the moment. No detectable noise on
the new Trane units. And for what it's worth, the Lennox units (same size)
were also RFI free for 20 years. Good luck with your project and stay cool!

[Elecraft] Correction: Icom AH-4 Universal Interface with KX3

2017-07-09 Thread Terry Brown
I need to correct one thing. I checked everything again and found that when
I put TUN PWR to 10 watts, when I press the TUNE button, at 5.8:1 SWR, the
output power shows 4.4 W, not 10. This tells me that I may not be putting
out enough power to make the circuit work. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Icom AH-4 Universal Interface with KX3

2017-07-09 Thread Terry Brown
I have an Icom AH-4 auto tuner that I would like to place at the feedpoint
of my horizontal loop so that when I tune, I will have 50 ohms coming
through the long run of coax to my rig instead of high swr. I bought the
tuner when I had my ICOM rigs that would interface and tune directly to it.

I looked on the internet, and there are several universal interfaces, some
more complex than others. I elected to go with the simple interface that
consists of a momentary switch, an led and 3K resistor in series as the the
main components. The following link shows a photograph of the circuit.

http://pacificcoastsail.com/PCSC_working/Blog/BOAT%20RESOURCE%20LIST%20VIP/m
ods_dk%20-%20ICOM%20-%20AH-4_files/IC-AH3_and_AH4_wiring.gif

I have my KX3 connected to my KXPA100 but the tuner is bypassed. I have
read that it requires at least 10 watts output from the rig to make the
circuit work. If I set the TUN PWR to 10 watts and press the TUNE (not ATU
TUNE) the power output shows 10 watts but when I press the momentary switch
to tune the AH-4, nothing happens and the tuner is not engaged and swr is
unchanged at 5.2:1..

If I set TUN PWR to 20 watts and try it, the power output shows zero before
I can press the momentary switch. .

The LED is 12V Led. I have 12.8 volts into the circuit, and at the
terminals of the DC power receptacle where the circuit attaches, I read
3.66V with everything connected.

I would appreciate it if any others have gotten this circuit to work and
could tell me what I am missing.

Thanks,

Terry

[Elecraft] Fldigi and signallink question interfaced to KX3

2017-06-29 Thread Terry Brown
I have a KX3 connected to a Signalink and Fldigi. It seems to work fine for
all the digital modes. I can use it to decode CW, but have never sent CW.
I clicked on the CQ button and all that happened was that my transmitter
went into transmit mode, but nothing was transmitted. If I put the KX3 in
LSB it would transmit cw fine, but was always off frequency by the amount of
my sidetone.

Will fldigi send CW correctly in cw mode on the KX3? If so, what am I doing
wrong.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] BL2 Balun Question

2017-06-08 Thread Terry Brown
I have the BL2 Balun and use it for balanced lines to Coax. Occasionally,
when I am using a wire and counterpoise to the BNC binding posts, I try to
match a shorter wire for 80 meters than what I really should due to lack of
space in RV sites. I believe I am connecting the Balun correctly; hooking
the long wire to A and the counterpoise to B on the Balun inputs. I can get
a shorter wire to tune that way.

My question is: what is the purpose of the GND connection on the Balun?
Does it need to be grounded when in use? Looking at the circuit diagram in
the manual, I don't think the counterpoise should be attached to the ground
connection?

I'd be interested in how others hook up their BL2 Baluns.

Thanks and 73's,

[Elecraft] Random Wire Lengths Question

2017-06-05 Thread Terry Brown
I have a K2, KX3 and a KX2. I have used a 58 Ft. wire with a 25 t.
counterpoise to the bnc binding posts with my KX3 and I believe I was able
to tune it on 80-10. I recently purchased a KX2, and for some reason, I
could not get the 58 Ft. length of wire to tune on 80 with the counterpoise.
I know that the wire length is one of the preferred lengths that should work
on all bands.

1.Is this a function of the particular day and ground I may have
been on that the 58 Ft. wire did not tune on 80, or do I need to go to an 84
Ft. length with 33 ft. counterpoise? How about more radials with the 58 Ft.
wire? I haven't been able to test with multiple counterpoises and the KX2,
but hope to in a few days.

2. I have read in the KX2 manual that a 25 Ft. wire and counterpoise
will tune 40 and perform well. (understanding the limitations of random
wires compared to doublets). Would the 58 ft. wire and 25 ft. counterpoise
perform appreciably better on 40-10 meters than the 25 ft. one? I do
operating from my RV on occasion, and it is really hard to get a long wire
up using my 30 ft. Jackkite pole with the limited space of most RV sites.

Thanks for the help. BTW, I was able to meet Eric Swartz at SEAPAC this
past weekend. I know he meets a lot of people, but it meant a lot to me to
meet one of the people who created the Elecraft gear that renewed my love
for Amateur Radio after an 8 year absence when I went to CW only and was
able to use small rigs with little power requirements. It is astounding how
great the Receiver's work in the KX3 and KX2. These rigs added a whole new
dimension to Amateur Radio for me.

Re: [Elecraft] Beam antenna question

2017-05-20 Thread Terry Brown
I really appreciate all the comments. I do have a follow up question:

An aluminum beam can be left up for years. I was reading one review of a
particular hex beam and the poster said that after 4 years, the cords holding
the beam together had become brittle and started to fail from UV exposure and
the main support members had deteriorated for same reason.

These beams are not cheap, I don't want to be taking the beam down and
replacing main structural components every 5 yrs.

Can anyone with a hex beam comment on this?

Thanks, Terry

I apologize that this is not a direct Elecraft equipment question, but
having the K2, KX2, KX3, PX3 and KXPA100, I thought I would ask. I will be
moving to a new QTH. I just took down an old Cushcraft ATB-34, on a 50 ft.
tower. It was the predecessor to the A4. I need a beam with a smaller
footprint. I am looking at the Mosley TA 33-JR.My other antenna will be
a multi-band doublet fed with 450 window line, so it will be able to work
the WARC bands, however, the apex will only be about 25 ft. high, about roof
level, so it will mostly be a cloud burner, but great for my local CW skeds
on 80 and 40. My beam will be at 32-35 ft; 8 ft. above my roofline to the
east. My QTH will be high on a hill facing the east. With that background,
here is the question:

If I were to order the Mosley TA33-JR-N-WARC, with the WARC bands included,
even though they will have zero gain, will the ability to rotate the beam
make the reception of the 12 and 17 meter bands better in all other
directions than the orientation of my doublet? My intuition says yes, but I
thought I would ask.

Also, I know that longer length antennas for a given band usually perform
better than a trapped antenna, but I would think that my low height doublet
will not be as effective as a WARC beam. My doublet will be just at the
height of my house and drop to 10 foot poles on the NW and SW lot corners.

I hated to give up my 50 ft. tower and beam, and my 80 meter horizontal loop
at 40 ft., but sometimes compromises have to be made. Being primarily a CW
op will help some.

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Very 73's,

Terry de N7TB

No, I have not seen any fire, smoking or dangerous issues, Ron. But I always
use the recommended chargers and charging formats. I always charge them in the
fire bag and never indoors or unattended. Like anything else that's dangerous,
they demand respect.

Have you ever had a battery failure and fire in one of them?

The ones I've seen on line that state they are tested under actual failure

I have been using charging bags similar to these for over 6 years to charge
LiPO batteries for my fleet of RC airplanes. Very prevalent and highly

but I've never had an issue.

[Elecraft] Strange SWR change on 20 at

2017-05-13 Thread Terry Brown
I recently started using my horizontal loop that is about a full wavelength
on 80, for 20 meters. I took down my yagi as we are moving; drat! My
Horizontal Loop is at 40 ft. height and fed with 450 window line into a 4:1
voltage balun with about 15 ft. of coax to rig.

I am running 100 watts through my KXPA100. I tune a frequency in the CW
portion of 20 to about 1.2 :1 and start sending CQ. After about 3 to 4 3x3
CQ's,, the SWR goes off the charts and power drops to zero. I can retune
the antenna and the process repeats itself. 20 meters is the only band
affected.

I am wondering if I am having RF problems in that part of the 20 meter bands
This only occurs on 20 meters. The Amp is grounded, but the KX3 is not
bonded to the Amp.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks and 73's,

[Elecraft] A KX3 owner with a K3 or K3S question

2017-04-25 Thread Terry Brown
I am the current owner of a K2 and KX3 with all the add ons possible. I
also have the PX3 and KPXA 100. I am happy with my setup. It is the finest
rig combination that I have had in 35 years as a ham. I love it's
flexibility for operating portable by using only the KX3, or with the PX3.
Disassembly and reassembly of connections can get tedious when I am
operating portable often and have to make the switch back and forth.

I keep reading all the great things about the K3 and K3S.

I also see that there are now good opportunities to purchase a used K3, many
with the upgrades to make them more like a K3S.

For those of you who have KX3 and a K3 that has been upgraded to have most
(not sure what is not possible to upgrade) of the features of the K3S, What
does the K3 as far as receive performance and other key features have, that
are an improvement/enhancement over what I have with the KX3?

The reason I ask, is that if I ever have additional funds available, I am
trying to figure out if it would be advisable to upgrade to a used K3 that
has been upgraded, and buy a P3, and use my KX combination for more portable
use.

I just don't know if it is worth buying a used K3 and P3 when I have the KX3
line. I know I am the one who would have to make that final decision, but
I would welcome any thoughts by current upgraded K3/P3 owners who also have
the KX3.

Thanks,

Terry de N7TB

[Elecraft] KPA 500 vs New 1500 watt amp

2017-04-20 Thread Terry Brown
If the new Elecraft amp is indeed 1500 watts it might be worth considering that
going from 500 to 1500 watts is only about 4.5 Db or less than 1 S-unit in
signal strength. If I owned the KPA 500 it would be a hard sell to get me to
move to ANY 1500 watt amp.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Ground rods and concrete

2017-04-18 Thread Terry Posey
I expect that the Moderator will be ending this Off Topic soon.

However:

One of my clients operates a large 90 tower (all self-supported) microwave
system here in Florida. Florida is often regarded as the lightning capital
of the world. I have helped my client with repairing damaged (cracked)
tower foundations. Approximately $1 Million have been spent over the last
five years repairing concrete foundations that have embedded Ufer rods in
addition to an extensive external grounding system comprised of radials and
soil driven rods. No repairs have been needed to any of the tower
foundations that do not have Ufer embedded rods.

I have noticed that the damaged foundations cracks seem to appear after 15
years of service. This could be evidence of long term repetitive internal
stresses - perhaps stresses resulting from steam expansion of the concrete's
internal moisture due to repetitive high energy lightning pulses to the Ufer
rod. Of course, none of that thought is easily provable.

In the meantime, I do not include Ufer ground rods in any tower foundation
designs that I have professional responsibility.

Thanks for the particularly timely reply, Don. I spent the past weekend

Don and Ronnie,

Let me see if I can help by pointing out the differences between the Elecraft
transceivers K3, K3S, KX2 and KX3 and other transceivers in the use of data
modes.

The following points are directed at soundcard oriented data modes.

1) Use DATA A instead of the normally recommended USB. While USB will work,
you normally have the SSB set up for voice, including compression and TX EQ.
The data modes automatically turn compression to zero and turn off TX EQ.

2) For RTTY, use AFSK A - that is specifically designed for RTTY and defaults
to LSB which is normal for RTTY.

3) Audio levels - ignore the internet advice to adjust the power with the audio
level. Adjust the audio to illuminate 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the
5th bar flashing. This is the "NO ALC" point for these Elecraft transceivers -
the first 4 bars are present to allow you to properly adjust the audio. Once
adjusted, you should not have to change it unless something changes it in the
computer.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-20 Thread Terry Schieler
Back in 2013, I purchased a custom shipping box from Dave Haller, KA1W, of
www.hamradioboxes.com with which to ship an Acom 1000 amplifier that I was
selling. It was pricy, but so was the amp. I would not have purchased one for
just a half a K3 round trip to Elecraft Service, but if you are doing
DXpeditions and moving your gear around regularly, his custom boxes were
outstanding.

Update: I did a quick Google search for Ham Radio Boxes and the most recent I
can find is from 2014 saying that Dave had taken a "temporary break" from the
box building business. Sad, as Dave was excellent to work with.

See my (and other) eHam review: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9938?page=2

35-40 ft. that is a bit longer than 1 wavelength on 80. I feed it at one
corner with 450 ohm twin lead connected to a 4:1 voltage balun, then coax to
my rig. I can tune all the ham bands either barefoot to my K2 or KX3 and
the KXPA100 using their internal tuners.

My new QTH will not have the real estate to do what I can now. I was hoping
someone who is well versed with the EZNec antenna program could give me an
idea of how well what I think I can build, will work. I will have a yagi
for 10-15-20. I am particularly concerned that I may not be able to tune
80. I have a Sunday CW qso with a group of great guys on 80 and want to
keep participating.

Here is the info on the new horizontal loop:

The east side will be 54 ft. long and be 2 ft. above my roof at a 35 ft.
height. That leg of the loop will be over a roof that slopes away for about
8 feet. The west side will be 78 ft. long and up 20 ft. The remaining
north and south sides will be 38-40 feet each of the same length. This will
give a loop a bit longer than 200 ft. I plan to feed it again on a corner,
the NE corner when it is two feet from the roof and I can run the twin lead
down the side of the house to my shack.

I know this will be predominantly a cloud burner, but that is fine on 40 and
80. My concern is being able to tune it on the 80, 40, 30, 17, and 24 meter
ham bands.

My lot is only 80 by 100 so a doublet on 80 will not work without folding it
in several locations. I have loved my loop and would love to be able to
continue using one. The fact that it is horizontally polarized is so nice
for being able to work weak stations without a lot of noise.

If anyone could help me with the analysis of this antenna, I would
appreciate it.

73's,

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] All the Amplifier Discussions

2016-12-31 Thread Terry
As I have been reading the various threads on Amplifiers over the past few
days, I am struck by the incredible variety of topics and activities that
bring all of us joy in Amateur Radio. For some of us, it is the ability to
make contacts with very little power. For others, just running a standard
100 watts and trying to earn DXCC etc. or other awards, is a great
challenge.

For others, getting every bit of legal power output as possible, or
discussing what 1-3 dbs. means in making that contact is very important
whereas, someone else might say, "Who cares?" We all get enjoyment from the
hobby in so many ways.

The maximum power I have ever used was 100 watts. With a good yagi, there
was never a station if I heard it, I could not work it. I might have not
been able to bury everyone with a kilowatt signal and be heard first, but it
is really an amazing thing to be in the fray with the big boys and through
timing of the call and other tricks learned over the years, get someone to
come back to me.

I was exclusively an SSB operator for 24 years, then took 9 years off from
the hobby then came back as a CW operator. It was quite a challenge to get
my speed back after so many years of viewing CW as a means to get up to
Extra, instead of a mode of conversation that I could really enjoy.

After all these years, What I have discovered is not whether I can squeeze
out all the power possible, or have the greatest antennas, or all the
greatest rigs, (Although my K2, KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 are absolutely the
best rigs I have ever ownedthanks Elecraft!) or spent time on this group
arguing the minute details of some technical question, even though many get
a great deal of enjoyment doing that.

What I have discovered is it is the relationships we make on the air with
our fellow hams. It is that human connection across the miles, whether it
be several miles on 160, or around the world on 10, it is the great memories
of all the interesting hams I have met on the air, both on SSB, Digital, or
CW that really make Amateur Radio special.

We are all very fortunate to have such a great hobby to enjoy...and to
always remember it is a hobby, and that family always comes first, yet have
great experiences along the way.

When I became a ham at 34 years old, I thought about how ham radio would be
with me throughout my life and as I got older and had more time, it would be
wonderful to have the hobby. Now that I am 68 years old, I still don't seem
to have enough time, but ham radio is a wonderful hobby to enjoy. One of my
realizations is that even though I have enjoyed several sunspot cycle
maximums over the years, if I am lucky, I will get to enjoy only one more
in my lifetime. Life passes so quickly. Enjoying every day in the
wonderful hobby is such a blessing, and I know that many of us share those
thoughts.

Very 73's,

Terry, N7TB
