Re: [Elecraft] Problem with N1MM+ ansd My K3 in ARRL RTTY Test

This sounds like a setup issue in N1MM+. You will probably get better
help on their email group.

Under configurer check the mode settings and make sure rtty is set to rtty.

USB. I had to push the mode button twice to get back to FSK D mode each time I
clicked on a new spot.

I temporarily switched to DXLab Suite and used MMTTY together with Commander
and Spot Collector. With that software setup, I could click on a new RTTY spot
in Spot Collector, and the K3 stayed in FSK D mode. When I switched back to
N1MM+, I had the origninal problem for the rest of the contest.

It was a real drag having to reset the mode to FSK D every time I selected a
new call sign to work. Any thoughts?

Why an automatic tuner? The amp has an auto-tuner, and the two are
unlikely to play well together. Instead, I'd look at a good manual
tuner like the Ten Tec 238. I've owned several of them and find them
to be good performers. So did ARRL Labs when they tested them many
years ago.

Ten Tec has been sold a couple of times and new 238s are probably no
longer available, but used 238s are usually available on the used
market. Best bet are the B and C models, which have a vernier readout
for the inductor, as opposed to a dial cord in the older models.
Expect to pay about $400 for the B or C, $300-350 for the older
units. The 229 is electrically and mechanically the same as the older
238s, but in a cabinet that matches older Ten Tec rigs.

To use this tuner in your station, set the SPE to bypass mode, tune it
for the bands where you operate and log the settings. Then put the SPE
tuner back in line in auto mode and let the auto tuner do its thing to
cover the band(s) as you QSY.

Legal Limit amp (I'm a fairly active contester). Bought an Expert 2K-FA and
just put that online. So far so good. The one clear downside to the 2K-FA
is ...that it is loud (actually quieter than most High Power amps but still
loud).

With that said ...and given the fact that the Expert Amp SO2R isn't really
SO2R (second antenna is rx only) ...I'm going to pair a second rig with the
KPA500 and use it as a backup contest rig and as main for non contest Qs
where I don't need the extra 3DB. Right now the second rig is a Kenwood
TS2000 ...which isn't really a contest or DX quality transceiver. The three
options I'm mulling over are ..

1) another K3 ...Upside: SO2R is most intuitive with identical xcvrs,
plays well with KPA500/KAT500, identical cabling ...Downside: Expensive,
It's more fun to have different rigs to play with, and like others, I find
the K3 can be kind of "harsh" to listen to for many hours.

2) Kenwood TS590 ...Upside: Biggest bang for the buck (IMO) contest
capable xcvr, Good audio ..Downside: Looks like it has a weird audio codec
(meaning not the standard Kenwood). I see that N1MM works with it ...but I
wonder about other software plus the MK2R+.

3) KX3+KXPA100(+existing KAT/KPA500) ..Upside: The KX3 really intrigues me.
In a perfect world ...the Second Rig would be one I could easily take
portable. The Sherwood reviews seem to indicate that the KX3 rcv
performance is comparable to the K3, and I'm a real fan of Elecraft in
general. Downside: Clearly there is no technical reason one couldn't chain
all this together, but I wonder if anyone actually has done it, and if there
were any configuration issues

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks and 73

two dozen times, I had to tell callers their audio was so bad that I
couldn't copy them. In every case, mic gain was turned up FAR, FAR too

with audio so bad that I couldn't copy their calls, let alone try to
make an exchange.

This is PURELY a matter of STUPIDITY on the part of the operator (and
perhaps an unsportsmanly intent to produce splatter to keep other
stations away from their sidebands), and there's no excuse for it.
Most modern rigs have a monitor function lets the operator listen to
his transmitted audio, and I'd bet that many of those who sound the
worst have another rig that the COULD use to listen to their own RF

It is assigned to PF1 (RIT button), you can do the job with K3 utils.

It copies the actual frequency to VFO B, moves the VFO 1 UP, sets on
the corresponding filters. Now you listen the DX on your KRX3 while
the main RX/TX is on the calling frequency. You can use QSK/QRQ while
operating split.

I operate almost exclusively CW. For SSB you should modify the filter

In my experience, the I.F. cable between the K3 and P3 is quite
finicky when it comes to the quality of cable and connectors. I
have just replaced my two P3 cables with these:

These cables have a copper braid and aluminum foil shield, the
molded transition from connector to cable looks beefy and solid,

reasonable.

The legal issue will sort itself out. If ESSB does not have it's own

then it is not legal. This conclusion on my part is based on Part

The K3 puts out a volt or two, which is comparable to most consumer
devices. A Bluetooth device that works with consumer gear would also
work with a K3. The only thing to be concerned about is RFI, and if
there are no wires attached to act as a receiving antenna, or if they
are very short, I wouldn't expect problems.

One caveat about my earlier response to Phil Kane's post about the
neck loop. This works by generating a magnetic field, which couples
into a magnetic loop in the hearing aid IF it has one. Not all hearing
aids do.

W6OAT likes the hearing aid he got from Costco, which has a jack for a
standard 1/8-in cable to plug into a radio. He says it works fine with
his K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Bluetooth adapter for K3 Audio

2014-04-29 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
The reason I was looking for this is because I already have the hearing
aids in. With the bluetooth my remote control will feed the K3 signals
right into my hearing aids. No wires etc. I can wear headphones
without any issues whatsoever. The remote control allows me to change
the volume of my hearing aids, change noise reduction, quality programs
and listen to the TV device and answer my cell phone. The TV and cell
phone are linked via bluetooth to the remote. The remote then transmits
the audio to the hearing aids over a 2.4 ghz signal path.

My hearing loss is the upper part of the voice range. I can still hear,
but I have a tough time with noisy rooms, restaurants and have been
saying what too much and the tv is too loud. The hearing aids I have
will transpose the frequencies that I don't hear well to lower
frequencies or simply attempt to amplify the lost range. My lower range
is above normal.

These new hearing aids are pretty amazing.

utility programs.

Have you set the baud rate in the K3 to that of the amp?

When the amp is moved from standby to Operate you should see a message
in the K3 that says KPA500.

You can set the K3 output with the amp and without.

I would check the firmware. I know there is a special button you push
on the KAT500 that optimizes operation with the KPA500.

Hello friends,

I've been using my tiny KX3 with a KPA500 and KAT500 for many months now.
The KX3 only puts out 12 watts, but the KPA500 translates it successfully
into about 200W. The KPA500 and KAT500 have been connected via the
official DB15 cable sold by Elecraft, and the KX3 triggers the amp via RCA
cable into the amp's PA-key connector.

Fast-forward to today: I just received a K3, and I'm really excited to see
the K3, KPA500, and KAT500 all just "work together" magically. Except
they're not.

I've connected everything exactly as shown in the KAT500 manual:

- K3's ACC port is connected to the tuner's XCVR port, via the official
KPAK3AUX cable.
- The tuner's AMP port is connected to the amp's AUX port, via the
official E850463 cable.

I'm definitely able to use the K3 and tuner together when the amp is off.
But when I turn on the amp, there appears to be no communication between
amp and K3.

- The amp doesn't notice when I change bands on the K3.
- The amp won't let me change bands at all, even when I push its band
buttons!
- When I put the amp into OPER and transmit 15 or 20W from the K3, the
amp doesn't appear to "key" and amplify. It just shows the exact 20W as
passing through (on it's 'power' display.)

I've verified that the amp's RADIO option is set to 'K3'.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I just got a KAT500 a couple of weeks ago and was talking with Eric.
The Beta's which might have been released to live by now had many
changes that would make the the three device all get along much better.

I am pretty sure you need to set the baud rate on the KPA500 and the K3
to the same rate. Ie 38400.

You will need to get the usb-serial cable to do the updates.

The KAT 500 acts as a type of Y or WYE for the 15 pin cable.

You should have got a the pc interface cable with the KAT500.
Download the current utility and then download version 1.67

Under configuration you should see a big button that says Optimize for
KPA-500.

Push it!

I was told to put 1500 in the maximum watts box.

save it and see what happens.

The KPA 500 should switch to the right band on rf. It is strange that
it will not amplify.

I see nothing at all. This is a 3rd example, I suppose, of the total
lack of communication between K3 and KPA500.
Again, keep in mind that the K3 isn't /directly/ connected to the
KPA500. They're actually both connected to the KAT500 tuner, as the
diagrams specify.

I would check the firmware. I know there is a special button you
push on the KAT500 that optimizes operation with the KPA500.

I see nothing about this in the KAT500 manual, but will look again.
The connection between tuner and amp has always worked; I haven't
touched that special DB15 cable at all. However, perhaps the new DB15
cable that arrived with the K3 is physically defective? I'm digging
for hypotheses. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 & Chasing local HF noise sources

2014-05-01 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
Run the KX3 on battery and turn off your house mains and see if the
noise goes away. If not you know to start looking elsewhere. You might
also try the RFI reflector.

I live in a rural area, which should be very low noise. i put up a OCFD
(88:44) this afternoon, and tonite wandered on to 80m to listen and check the
antenna. I had 20db over noise everywhere. 40m was showing S4 noise, and I
could only copy about 4 or 5 stations above the noise on 40m (yep, NR and NB
both on, 400hz wide).

nearest neighbor is 1/4mi away, and I'm the last one on a rural overhead power
line.

So, Given a KX3 and internal batteries, my first thought is to build a small
multi-turn electrostatically shielded loop (1ft dia, 3-5 turn in a copper pipe,
1" gap at top) and see if I can localize any local noise sources.

my office and computers are prime targets of course...

Is this overkill ?
Recommendations for a better small / near-field noise pickup ?
Any other advice for first steps ?
Anyone else chased noise sources with their KX3 ? How did it work, what
antenna did you use ?
Other suggestions / recommendations ?

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)

2014-05-01 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
The 590 has some short falls. No 2nd receiver, some issues on 10m.
Only one roofing filter.

I owned a couple of FT-2000's and they were easy to use. Looked pretty
cool but had some serious performance issues in the receiver. Sold them
and got a K3 and then another one.

Most reflectors and groups deal with issues and problems. I try not to
get too involved with the negatives about what I own.

I am almost similarly situated as the original inquisitor... I
recently sold my 590 and now seriously consider buying a K3, but I am
still on the fence, planning to test drive the K3 as soon as possible.

Why did I sell my 590 to consider buying the K3? The 590 is a solid
performer, and I enjoyed using it, and while my rig had no issues, I
sold it because I did not enjoy the overall 590-ownership-experience,
and although it is too complicated to explain fully here, I will say I
was sick of too many other owners whining and expecting perfection
from a $1500 radio, basing many complaints on unfounded or fanciful
claims, paranoid delusions, and unreasonable expectations. I just got
sick of it, and of being asked by other hams about this and that so
called "issue" or "problem" I was not experiencing, so it was no fun
to own.

So, I bought a Orion II and now considering buying a K3, both of which
radios seem free from that sort of nonsense.

That's my reason, anyway.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Accessory Jack - How Many Wye Cables?

2014-05-12 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
This is an issue. If you have a band decoder, want to run the preamp,
the amp, tuner, and say a Microham device. I have used multiple Y
adapters successfully.

Mike W0MU

On 5/12/2014 6:04 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote:

Rich,

I assume you also have a KPA500 in the mix.
The problem is not with adding another "Y" cable, but the possibility
that the other device will interfere with the band signalling to the
KPA500.
If that other device has pullup resistors, that can create problems,
especially if the pullups are to some voltage other than 5 volts. You
may have to add isolating diodes to that device (the KPA500 does have
those protection diodes on the band data lines).

If it has no pullup resistors, then it may be OK.

the 400hz CW filter.

If you are going to hook the radio up to a computer for contesting etc
you will probably want the KIO board and if you use receive antennas the
Xvtr board.

Tap 3 to select OLD or NEW QSK (default). NEW reduces AF keying artifacts.
Tap 4 to select VOX NOR (default) or AUTO OFF. The AUTO OFF setting
turns CW VOX off on power-up, avoiding accidental keying by attached
PCs, etc.
Tap 5 to select automatic VFO offset on SSB/CW mode change (VFO OFS) or
no offset (VFO NOR, default). Automatic offset is often used on 6
meters, where
mixed-mode QSOs are necessary during fading. Note: Pitch matching will be
more accurate if USB is paired with CW REV, and LSB with CW normal.

Tap 1 if you want to send cw while in ssb mode.

The Chinese have already made good inroads with the Wouxun handy
talkies. 100 dollars for a full featured dual band hand held is hard to
beat. I have one and it is built very well. I have suspected that many
of the Japanese radios were being built in China or Taiwan.

It is a pleasure supporting a great company with great people with great
products. Like many I try to support USA companies when at all
possible. Elecraft makes this a no brainer.

I love my K3's, KPA500, P3 and more! Thanks for building superior
products at reasonable prices.

It was fun to build my equipment with my son. I think it creates a
special bond between builder and radio. I wish there were more projects

Keep up the fantastic work!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - background hiss

2012-04-28 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
CW or SSB or both? How old is the K3? There was a DSP swapout that
addressed this. For SSB I drop the FC on the filter down to about 1.0
which helps. There were some other settings that might help. Check the
archives.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 New AGC FW

2012-05-06 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
Loaded the new SW and I miss having NR. I have been tuning around in
the 7O piles and it is hard for me to compare as I never really
experienced what others have. I need to split the antenna and share
with two K3's and see if I can hear a difference.

Glad to hear the NB is working better. The distortion to some signals
with it on was really bad.

[Elecraft] K3 LCD Display

2012-05-07 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I have two K3's and the LCD's appear to be colored differently. I have
the two LCD settings the same but the newer K3 display is slightly
darker or more orangish in color than the older one. Changing the
settings does not change this coloration. I realize this is minor but
when they sit next to each other there is a noticeable difference. Is
there possibly another adjustment that I missed along the way? This is
probably just a difference in LCD runs.

[Elecraft] K3 4.51 distortion

2012-05-15 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
Copying station on 20m CW with the preamp on and the thr above 8 there
is a very noticable distortion to the signals. SLP does not seem to
change this. I don't know if the Thr is adding to the noise thus making
the cw sound distorted or something else.

Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500)

2012-05-18 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I agree the price is a bit higher than I would have liked to have seen.
I am sure it will work far better than the MFJ and I don't think either
will handle the full output on 6m which the KAT500 will do or so I was
told. I smoked my LDG the other day on 6m because I forgot they are
only rated for half power on 6m.

It would be very helpful if people could remember to put K1: K2: K3:

Re: [Elecraft] I am so over the KX3 list for shipping

2012-05-22 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I have no issues being 1st in line with Elecraft. Sure they might have
an issue here or there but they stand behind their products. I had an
early FT-DX9000 and I couldn't give it back to them fast enough. They
even screwed me on the shipping. Everyone of the 9000's had to go back
to Yaesu to get "FIXED". Elecraft will just send parts, boards etc.

By the way someone has to find the issues and that is not always the
beta testers.

I have two K3's, P3, KPA-500 and the KAT-500 on order.

Elecraft does not ship products that are not ready and are not pressured
to ship prior to having all the bugs worked out.

[Elecraft] 4.51 comments

2012-05-27 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
No complaints on mush from here in the contest and at times I had a
swarm of S nothing Europeans calling. The issue is everyone calls dead
on zero beat and that makes it really difficult.

What I did notice which I thought was odd is that when 3 people were
calling at the same time it seemed that the signals were stronger or
more readable than when I called the DL3 and he came back alone.

I want to say there was more "magic" there to push through the receiver
when a few were calling over just one. Maybe it was just conditions.

I worked tons of guys in the noise. The improved NB is great most of
the time. You don't want it on when there are really strong signals
close by of course.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] SO2R Controllers

2012-05-31 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I have had a Microham MK2R+ for a long time. It works great. It is no
more difficult to set up than the Logging software you are going to use
with it. So if you can't figure out N1MM or Writelog you probably won't
figure out any of the SO2R setups.

There is a learning curve with anything. Was anyone an expert with
their K3 the first day? NO! I learn new tricks with my K3's all the
time and to an extent the same could be said for the MK2R+ and finding
better and more efficient ways to use it.

Router runs on the computer. If you computer dies you are probably done
contesting anyway right? I not going be too competitive trying to find
paper, pencil and then trying to remember who I worked etc.

We used two Microham Microkeyer II's at J6M and never had a hiccup.

Whether you like Joe or not the guy knows his stuff and you will find
his help just as timely if not quicker than Elecraft.

I ran SO2R rtty in one contest and I felt like I was cheating it was so
easy!

I am very happy with all my Microham products and their excellent support.

automatically so you really don't need any cabling other than the ptt line.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500

2012-06-18 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
The fan rarely ever kicks in for me. My QSO's are pretty short. DX,
contests. The only time I have really seen the fans go on is with
RTTY. To it sounds like the OP has or had a problem with the initial
build. If the screws were loose that secured the heat sink panel I
could see that being problematic.

When in J6 we upped the fan speed on the outset to about 3 because it
was always 80 degrees plus and very humid so I wanted to keep the air
moving. We ran the CQ WW CW and never had one issue with heat or
anything for that matter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 just goes off - SOLVED

2012-06-24 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
Glad you found it Lee!

Many problems similar to this are caused by a bad crimp job on the
Anderson connectors. I would encourage everyone to get the more
expensive crimp tools with the right dies for the various amperage
connectors used.

Soldering is fine too but not needed if the cable is crimped properly.

[Elecraft] K3 sub receiver no signals

2012-07-01 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I installed this 2nd receiver quite some time ago. I probably never
checked but i hear background noise in the sub receiver but no signals.
I suspect this is something stupid, can someone point me in a direction.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 sub receiver no signals

2012-07-01 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I have an antenna connected. I suspect that I have mis wired the to the
bnc instead of the main ant. I will have to check the cabling. I can't
believe I never checked this when I built it.

I have KE7X's book and I have tried all the settings.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 sub receiver no signals

2012-07-01 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
The 2nd receiver was hooked up to the bnc aux connector. I had to
change that. However still no signals. I have tried every combination
of antennas etc.

I suspect maybe there was an issue when I uploaded the new firmware.

[Elecraft] K3 sub receiver no signals solved!

2012-07-02 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
There was a config error in the Sub filter setup. I have a 2.7 filter
in slot 2 and 400 in slot 4. Those were setup correctly. The Sub also
thought I had a 2.7 in FL1. Changed that and the receiver came to life.

Obviously the other issue was that I had decided, for reasons still
unknown to me today, to install the input using the AUX BNC.

Thanks for the suggestions and hints!

We are fortunate to have some very smart helpful folks on the reflector!
