You should first determine whether you are suffering a problem that will
benefit from this. XTAL filters will help if you are suffering from
strong adjacent channel interference, but will degrade the pass band
flatness, and, probably, the group delay characteristics (pulses will be
more smeared out). (I don't know if all the K3 filters are FIR, which
is needed for ideal group delay behaviour.)

with some different modes. Were I to add a 250 HZ CW filter would that
also work at 500 HZ?

An ideal 250Hz filter would limit the maximum bandwidth to 250 Hz. It
will be even less ideal than the DSP but will dominate the overall
frequency response outside the 250 Hz (and even near the edges, within
it). I'd expect the response to be 10s of dB down before 500 Hz, maybe
over 60.

This could be a game killer. The retirement community I live in is resistant

How do I keep track of this? Is there a listwerv whereit is discussed?

I use the AXE with the KH1 for 40m with the 32ft counterpoise from the

made POTA contacts with that setup.

When I move to the higher bands, I just leave the long counterpoise
connected. The KH1 doesn't mind and matches the higher bands fine.

I have not kept notes on my matched SWR readings, but I should. I'm
usually wanting to get the activation moving and get it done. Maybe I
should just take the little rig out in the front yard and play a little. ;)

Correlation is not causation, of course, but my KX3 MIC setting was
changed to 0 after a Windoze update two different times.  It didn't
happen with the latest update.  I can't even imagine how that could
happen, but when I mentioned it to my son, a professional in

The rig is connected to my Win 10 machine for logging (N3FJP AC log). This
computer has been a real challenge since I upgraded it from Win 7 to 10. I can
no longer control its desire to automatically update - it has beaten me...

There have been some issues with COM port assignments after an update, but I
have not seen anything else that that has affected the radio. However, I won't
rule that out as a possibility.

I'm leaning toward RFI as the cause. I think this was the only setting that
changed - but why that one?

When Windows updates it sometimes changes my KX3 settings.  Not exactly
something you would think of when trying to diagnose a problem with the

As I was talking on 20M SSB tonight, my K2/100 started to get a bit twitchy
when I transmitted. The power was set to just below 100W. I started seeing an
intermittent 'High Current' error message, which then changed to a constant
'Hot PA' error. I have an intermittent RFI problem on 20M (which I thought I
had solved), so that might have returned and caused this problem.

I tried matching the antenna with the KAT100. It would not arrive at any
solution - there were no relays clicking. I had to press the 'tune' button
again to stop it. Toggling the power on the rig made no difference.

So I searched the list's archives, and found a thread where Don mentioned the 'CAL TPA'
menu. I found that it was at its maximum setting of 150C - I have set this parameter
twice since building the radio 7 years ago. Resetting it to about room temp fixed the
problem, and the radio now behaves normally. I also checked "CAL Cur", and it's
still set to 3.50.

So, it is working again, but why did the 'CAL TPA' setting go to it's max? Is
there a known problem? Maybe it's a glitch from the RFI, but I thought I should
ask just in case there is something else I should check.

Thanks. 73,

I just wanted to say thank you for making this addition. One of the
features of my KX1 that is always appreciated is its ability to receive
SSB and respond. I've checked in to some of those 40m nets from the

My KH1 shipped yesterday and I'm really looking forward to taking it

The receive part of the penalty, from a lossy antenna, only applies if
the dominant noise source is after the point of attenuation. That's not
generally true at HF.

(I wonder if, at microwave frequencies, it is possible to use
circulators and isolators to put passive losses in on only the transmit
path.)

The only thing that has a flat 1:1 SWR from 80m to 6m is a good quality

during transmissions.  It takes some effort to correct it, and I
typically lose a QSO in the process.  The relays go nuts trying to
re-tune, and sometimes produces a fault condition. Usually, I can
correct it by restarting both the amplifier and tuner.  I have a Comet
CHA-250HD, which has a almost a flat 1.1 SWR from 80m to 6m.  I don't
need a tuner while barefoot.  However, when I first hooked up the
KPA500, the SWR was not flat, and added the KAT500 this week, which
led to my SWR issue.

I hope the cause and resolution can be determined.

I start transmitting again – pwr out is only about 10 W at that new match,

hold the tune but still only getting abt 9-10w power out. The issue occurs

Does this sound like a KAT 500 problem or maybe an RFI problem.

That sounds EXACTLY like an arc over somewhere past your KAT500.  Could
be a connector, the coax, the connection to the dipole, or any similar
spot, but my bet would be the connection to the connector or the
connector itself.

That which works fine at 100 watts might not work fine at 500. There
have been several examples of that here in the past.  I suggest checking
your KPA500 into a decent dummy load (shortest connection possible)
before assuming it has gone bad.

That being said, if it is indeed the amp I'd look at capacitors first,
especially any that are used on all of the bands.

Yes, the antennas check out fine for 160 and 80.
Good measurement numbers and working fine directly from the K3.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] Availability of KH1 at major hamfests

2024-01-10 Thread David Wilcox via Elecraft
I will ask this again. I did not see a response earlier. I know the supply
chain of the KH1 is limited right now.

BUT will Elecraft be bringing any KH1s to Xenia just to sell there like they
have other rigs in the past? By May hopefully the supply issue should be more
stable.

Hello all,
I have the KX3-2M Transverter option board for sale. It's about four years old.
I don't need the board for 2m FM and putting up a large outdoor beam for SSB at
this HOA location isn't possible.
During testing, it receives and transmits fine on my attic vertical into local
repeaters.
Removed it from the KX3 while following the manual and ESD procedures.
A hard copy of the installation/operating manual is included.
Photos available.
I think Elecraft is up to $300.00 for this board!
No returns or refunds for all the standard reasons.

$185.00 shipped to CONUS only.
Shipping prices are just out of site now!
PayPal, friends/family, Zelle, Postal Money order or a cleared personal check
are all ok.
Thanks for looking,
Ken, W2GIW

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Power Overshoot on First Syllable

2023-12-19 Thread David Woolley
This is all, unfortunately, in the proprietary part of the K2, the
firmware. The K2 doesn't have a gain calibration tables, and I'm not
sure if it even saves gain settings between transmissions.

With CW it will know that the first transmit level it sees is full
power, so my guess is that it starts low and builds up to that, but for
SSB, it won't know when the peak has been reached, so it is going to set
the transmit gain before it reaches peak and then back it off, but there
will be a delay in backing it off. Remember it is primarily a CW
transmitter.

I would guess, to minimise this, you should set your audio drive levels
low enough that it gets the correct power open loop.

To make things safe for your amplifier, I guess you would have to add an
attenuator, so that maximum power will not overdrive the amplifier.
However, I'm not sure that running at maximum power is good for clean
signals.

I don't know if there is any open loop control between the power control
and the transmit gain, or whether it totally relies on closed loop power
control. Any open loop control would have to be a compromise, because
of production spreads in the gain, so, on most instances, would end up
too high, so as not to limit the maximum output.

I believe there is a gain calibration procedure on the K3 and K4, that
allows those to make a reasonable open loop power setting at the start
of a transmission.

I have K4 radios at a mountain QTH and a valley QTH and either one can

and Elecraft programmers are hard at work on them.

Some highlights:

 - Cabling changes required: *ZERO* - leave both stations in their local
configuration. You do need a way to turn on a remote K4. I'm using N6TV
"K-ON" dongles and remote power switches. I think you can also do it from a
connected KPA1500 and KPA1500 Remote. No need to leave anything powered on
 when not in use.
 - It's *dead simple* to connect - just specify an IP address on the
client (control) K4 and set up one port forward on the LAN router at the
server (remote radio) site. Passwords will prevent unwanted intrusion.
(Compare to over 100 parameters that have to be set up between pairs of
RRCs - and they only work one-way!)
 - Connection takes about a second.
 - It's bi-directional - any K4 anywhere can control any other K4
 anywhere. No hardware asymmetry.
 - CW sidetone and Voice monitor are local, so unaffected by latency.
 - Use the keyer inside the client K4 or an external keyer.
 - Plays nicely with loggers like N1MM. They see the local K4 and don't
realize it's controlling a remote radio.
 - You can update the firmware in both radios from the K4 at either site.
 - ... and more

I've been an avid remote op for a decade now and this is better than I
expected, like K4 itself well worth the wait. Hang in there, folks,
it's really coming. Really.

I don't know if the problem is showing up on my transmit signal as I

than buying bigger and better anything for our station, our time and
money is far better spent identifying and replacing as many as
possible of these nasty noise sources.

There's a tutorial on my website, k9yc.com/publish.htm  about how to
find and replace them. All of the 12V gear in my shack runs on two big
batteries that are float charged by re-purposed Thinkpad power
supplies using Genasun charge regulators. A 100Ah LiFePO4 runs the
rigs, a 100Ah Sealed Lead Acid runs the rest of the stuff.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 beta 2.16

2023-11-13 Thread DAVID GREEN via Elecraft
Based on the release notes, I think this means that the Yaesu FTDX3000 (and
others) can operate in enhanced mode, like the Kenwood, with both frequency
and band data. Is that correct? If so, what kind of cabling is needed for the
Yaesu for enhanced mode? Can enhanced mode function if another device (pc
running MacLogger via USB) is also polling?

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-06 Thread David Gilbert

There is a small arrow immediately to the right of the small "SPLIT"
balloon.  It says "TX" above the arrow and points to the transmit
frequency.  At least I see that on my K3 even when I haven't activated
the subreceiver with the "SUB" button.

I am having trouble understanding both the manual and N6FN’s Mini-manual when
it comes to Split operation. I follow the “directions” over and over but
nothing happens.

Does the fact that my K3S does not have a sub receiver mean that I can’t work

If I’m wrong about that I would really appreciate a step-by-step How-To lesson

Just an opinion, not trying to start another mail thread:
I would like the list owner to consider restricting forsale messages.

With the K4 being available and the availability of some K3 options, I
now see a flurry of messages from people offloading their kit, or
looking for something.

A discussion about a K3 that has a defect or a modification will
benefit future readers for years to come (yes, I do use the archives
which I think is a valuable part of the reflector).

The flurry of messages "K3 for sale ... K3 has been sold" lost their
value the moment the message is on the list. The person offloading
doesn't care when he switches to flex or whatever but damage to the
archives is forever.

If the reflector degrades to a forsale list then attendance will be
6999 and probably (much) lower.

True Elecraft service has been fine, the problem has been I've needed

The notch filter on the '890 isn't automatic but the beat cancel is

valuable panel space by putting a noise blanker switch on it and the

So on to my questions about the two rigs. For those who have fairly
recent experience running both the TS-890/K4's I would greatly
appreciate anyone's thoughts and comments about the two rigs. I
really like the 890 after I finally figured out how to run it (hi
hi). I like the visual representation of adjusting the high and low
bandpass filters on the waterfall. One feature of the 890 I don't
like is the notch filter isn't automatic unlike my K3s.

I know there's a lot of complaints about relatively poor DSP noise
reduction on the 890 and I do agree it's not in the same class as my
K3s but nonetheless it's still quite effective. Receive sensitivity
on my 890 is outstanding, I'll have to give it a subjective 5 stars
and my K3s 4 stars.

One huge bonus of Elecraft is factory service which I've had to use
a couple of times with my K3s. I give it 5 stars :-)

Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated and please be brutally
honest.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3

2023-10-13 Thread David Gilbert

I am reasonably certain that the KAT3 can handle 100 watts for a lengthy
period to time (enough for normal FT8 purposes) if the SWR it is trying
to match is low enough.  But the original query didn't say how high an
SWR he was trying to match.  The KAT3 is certainly capable of matching
some pretty high SWRs (well over 10:1), but the question is how long can
it push 100 watts into an SWR that it could otherwise normally handle at
lower SWR.

Another factor is the phase of the impedance the KAT3 is trying to
match.  A high SWR could present either a capacitive load or an
inductive load to the KAT3.  In one case it could result in high
currents within the KAT3 ... in another it could mean high internal
voltages.

So the real question is ... can the KAT3 survive for X amount of time
when pushing 100 watts into a high SWR at most any phase?   I can pretty
much guarantee that nobody knows the answer to that question.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the KAT3 could handle 100 watts into a
high SWR for periods of time that were comfortable for FT8 if the phase
of the load impedance resulted in higher currents.  I'm not so confident
about that if the phase gave high voltages. Heating takes a bit of time
to be destructive ... voltage breakdowns and arc overs happen very quickly.

Now, I don’t think I have given a full 100 watts when something isn’t connected

Since in that situation, it clicks for a long time before coming to a “match”,
I tend to notice that there is a problem before applying full power.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3

2023-10-11 Thread David Gilbert

Not really.  He asked about the KAT3, not the K3.  The KAT3 can handle
some very wide impedances, but the question is can it handle full power
from the K3 when it sees a high SWR at the output.  For example, how
much power can the KAT3 handle for 10 minutes when trying to match an
SWR of 10:1?  Maybe it can handle 100 watts for 10 minutes at that kind
of SWR, but I can't find any spec that says so.  The KAT3 manual is an
assembly manual only.

Subject: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3

Hello. I recently bought a very nice K3 from a friend. It has the KAT3 auto-tuner
installed. Due to the duty cycle of most digital modes, most, if not all, external auto
tuners are "de-rated" for digital modes. I haven't been able to find any
reference to this for the KAT3. Does anyone know the power handling capability of the
KAT3 for digital modes?

Thanks in advance.

Ken, KJ9B

Re: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3

2023-10-11 Thread David Gilbert

FT8 is definitely full duty cycle for its 13 second transmit period, but
of course then it is idle for the last two period and idle for the 15
seconds it is receiving.

Not just the tuner, the K3 is not rated for full power on 100% duty cycle
modes. Just like it's not rated or 100% key down CW. But realize that
many of the modes are half transmit and half listen.

Different digital modes have different duty cycles.

 From the W1HKJ.com website:
100% duty cycle: Olivia, MFSK,RTTY
80%: BPSK, MT63
44% CW
22%:FieldHell

There are more modes on Dave's website, but those are some of the
major ones. IDK if Joe Taylor has similar information on his website for
the modes he supports. It loioks like his modes may require full duty
cycle.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: The day I found out I was going to be an engineer

2023-09-17 Thread David Wilcox via Elecraft
Jerry,

One way to interest a son in radio and electronics expose him to others of his
age that are interested and playing with it. Possibly a call to a local scout
master to see if he has any charges that have a similar interest.

Sometimes it takes a few years. I exposed my secretary’s sons to electronics
and SWLing when they were teenagers and 30 years later when they had their
families and jobs stabilized they rediscovered ham radio and became licensed.

The best thing you are doing is something together with radio. My father was
interested but never became licensed, BUT he took me to other hams homes and
they showed me what they had and how it worked. And our family doctor was a ham
and took me under tow. I became a family doctor AND a ham….. and Dad bought two
Philmore radio kits and a one tube battery operated kit that I myself built. A
neighborhood kid was a ham and another ham lived across the street. As I got
older we made part 15 one transistor transmitters and sent CW around the
neighborhood.

It never stopped after that. Even in college and Med school there was always
someone that had a ham rig in a closet somewhere and I borrowed it and got on
the air. On the air since 1960.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Powers Off On Its Own

2023-09-15 Thread David Hachadorian
On one of my K3's the Powerpole receptacle got flaky. Turn the radio on,
and then wiggle the plug  to see if it drops out.  I resoldered where
the receptacle pins mate with the circuit board inside, but I still had
to use a tie-wrap to hold the plug in a certain position.  I'll fix it
the right way one of these years.

Good luck!

Hello all:

Earlier this week my K3 shut itself off while it was in receive mode. It
had been running for about 20 total minutes at the time it turned off. I
had just finished a 15 minute QSO. The Tx power was 10 watts.

When I tried to turn it on again, the display briefly flashed for a few
seconds and I could hear a slight buzzing sound from within the chassis and
it went off. I waited for a short time and tried again. The K3 display
flashed for a few seconds along with the buzzing, but would not stay
powered. I tried this one more time, but the display flashed very briefly,
buzzed and then off again.

This morning I could power on the K3, but I didn't let it run very long
before I powered it off. It would seem this is some sort of heat-related
issue.

It's serial number 2826, but it's had several mods over the years including
the upgrade on the receiver.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Rob, do they specifically forbid HF radio transmission? I live in a small (21
unit) condo building near Chicago, and the association is kind enough to let me
put a Hustler antenna with three resonators on our first floor balcony. It
works but OK not great. If you’re on a higher floor, you can do quite well

Is the building frame construction or steel framework with reinforced concrete

There are LOTS of headphones that sound great, have outstanding performance
both in their speakers and microphone. But, they make you feel like your
head is in a vice after just a few hours of wear. If the headphone is
uncomfortable, then no matter what its other characteristics are, they will be

The CM-500 happens to be one of the most comfortable headset for long-term wear

don’t come close. I also have a pair of the KOSS version of this headset. It is

the computer gaming headsets I have tried fit the bill. And I had the privilege

I am one of the ones who is experiencing difficulties with the CM500’s mic
sensitivity. Like some others with a recent model CM500, I have the preamp on
and the mic gain pegged on my K4, the mic right up close to my lips, and I
cannot get 5 bars without talking much louder than what should be necessary.

I can confirm that it works (albeit poorly) with bias on and does not work at
all when the bias is turned off.

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500

2023-08-07 Thread David Herring
I have been told that the Koss SB-45 is the replacement for the Yamaha CM500.
I have not as yet ordered a pair to try them myself, I am merely relaying what
I have heard. Might be worth researching if anyone’s looking for a CM500
replacement. I see there is a pair on Amazon for about $30 presently…

Re: [Elecraft] A Good Headset For A K3

I like the Koss SB-45 (3.5mm plug version, not USB).  It sounds great,
has a nice padded headband, and is $30 on Amazon.

Comfort depends strongly on the head of the wearer. I tried on a set
twice, first at a club meeting, then a few years later after
seeing/hearing posts like this. On both occasions I found them to be
an instrument of torture.

By contrast, the Yamaha CM500 headset is VERY comfortable -- I've worn
mine for long contest weekends with no fatigue, and both phones and
mic sound great. With the right TXEQ, audio is super competitive, is
easy to listen to and cuts through noise and QRM. The headset plugs
straight into the rear panel of both a K3 and a K4, (turn on bias,
because mic is an electret). Most of us program PF2 to toggle the
speaker on and off (go to the menu for that function and push PF2).
With the right cable adapter, it also works great with a KX3.

The only shortcoming of the Yamaha headset is it's somewhat light
construction -- I'm super clumsy, am always knocking the headset on
the floor, which has broken the cable. But at $60 or so compared 4-6
times that cost for ham specialty headsets that are no better, it's
cheap.

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a K4 in UK

2023-08-06 Thread David Aslin G3WGN
Eric,
Many thanks for giving this your attention. Moonraker is potentially an
excellent choice as the UK market is rapidly becoming a duopoly, with Moonraker
emerging as one of those two.
I am not aware of any UK repair persons that are already familiar with Elecraft
products. An outfit like Castle Electronics, suggested by G3UNA, most likely
has the technical skills, but would need training on the Elecraft product line.
In my previous note I renamed Carlo Bianconi as Claudio – my apologies. It is
Carlo that demonstrated first class repair and customer skills for multiple
members of our 6Gs DXpedition group.
I spoke with Lutz at some length while at Friedrichshafen. They have special
arrangements that allow shipping either to Germany or direct to their Swiss HQ.
The difference from the UK in the cost of shipping to Germany, Switzerland or
Italy is negligible, but the cost and admin complexity is substantial; a K4,
fully insured, will cost $520-600 to ship to Italy or Germany, depending on
which carrier is chosen. The cost to ship to Watsonville is the same. This is
clearly one of the drivers that causes me and others to encourage Elecraft to
appoint a UK distributor/service centre.

The confusion over the Elecraft US list price and the landed price in the UK is
a very familiar one. Many people really don’t understand the
calculations/requirements. In particular, there are frequent complaints about
having to pay ‘duty’ when in fact the charges are simply VAT (required by law)
and customs clearance costs (levied by the carrier to help cover their admin
costs in clearing the shipment through customs). Amateur radio equipment has
an import duty rate of zero in the UK.

In my previous post I mentioned that ordering direct from Elecraft had always
delivered a savings relative to buying from the former UK dealer. That
calculation was to add the Elecraft list price and shipping cost in $
(converted to GBP at the best rate I could find (hint: few credit cards will
give you this)); then add VAT at 20% to this GBP total; then add the clearance
fee also in GBP. It is the sum of all those items that must be compared with
the UK dealer price. I’m likely to be preaching to the converted on this
reflector, but I am constantly having to educate folks on this simple
arithmetic.

I am currently in contact with Justin at Moonraker. We also met at the
Friedrichshafen Ham Radio show in June. I'll report here as soon as I have
additional information on both the local sales and service for our products in
the U.K.

One note - For the reasons others have noted, we are also interested in
supporting independent repair persons inside the U.K who are familiar with our
products. Please contact me directly.

Also, in addition to our in and out of warranty repair center for the Eu since
2011, Carlo Bianconi in Bologna, Italy, who has an excellent lab and does
expert work, we have also added our Swiss Distributor, Lutz Electronics as an
additional repair center for in and out of warranty products. The feedback from
customers who have repairs done there has also been excellent. Lutz speaks vey
good English, German and French and also has an expedited method for shipping
to them from Germany.

On buying directly from us, one area of confusion among some international
buyers in the UK and elsewhere in the EU is that while quoted prices for our
products at local retail stores in Eu and the UK already include the addition
of your local VAT and the cost of shipping and insurance to them from the U.S.,
the on-line prices on orders shipped directly from us do not include the VAT or
import duty. That is required by the international authorities on your end to
be paid by the buyer upon receipt. (Shipping cost and insurance is also added
by us to the invoice at the time of billing prior to shipment.)

I bought my K4D from W 2 years ago, but they no longer list much Elecraft
equipment and seem to have lost interest.

All my other Elecraft kit came direct from Elecraft. W are unlikely to handle
warranty or repairs for items bought elsewhere, which is a pity as the only
place outside of the UK for service is either Italy or back to the factory.

Re: [Elecraft] Lightening static

2023-07-31 Thread David Gilbert

It isn't limited to vertical antennas at all.  I once got zapped with a
thick 2 inch long bright blue arc from an 80m Inverted-V that didn't
have any static bleedoff.  I used to just short the shack end of the
coax for that purpose, but one time I had forgotten to do that until I
remembered just as a storm was approaching in the distance.  As I
reached down to put on the sorted PL259 (I had one hand on the concrete
floor) the zap nailed me on the other hand. The biceps of both arms were
sore for three days.

Anything that can generate a difference of potential is a potential
risk.  It's informative to look up how much voltage is required to
create a 2" arc in dry air.  I can't find a source, but it would
probably also interesting to see what kind of current is necessary to
make the arc almost 2 mm thick.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 and Yamaha CM-500 Mic?

2023-07-30 Thread David Herring
Actually, I had (have) this very same problem and brought it up on here quite
some time ago. CM-500, mic and phones plugged into proper jacks on rear,
preamp on, bias on, mic gain at max, mic right at my lips, and I still have to
talk very loudly to get any response out of the ALC meter. I got another
CM-500 and swapped it in, and it was better…I didn’t have to talk as loud, but
still way louder than I’d like or should have to.

I never did puzzle out a solution for this. So if I need or want to get on SSB
and can’t talk loud (say like if the XYL is trying to sleep in the next room),
I put another mic on the front connector and have no problems getting plenty of
response out of that, even if talking in a hushed voice.

Oscar, if you find a solution to this, please be sure to post it on here…I’d
like for this work…failing that I might try someday to find a different
headset/mic combo...

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] A dumb question about lightning

2023-07-29 Thread David Woolley

> Lightning can’t tell whether something is grounded
> because the energy pulse hasn’t gotten that far yet.

[Full bottom quote follows reply.]

The path for lightning is determined before the main pulse of energy
loss happens, and much of the communication involved in determining the
path happens at the speed of light.

The actual lightning flash is a wave of energy conversion, from
electrostatic, to heat (and then to sound and light). The energy to
drive it is already there. It is isn't travelling down the growing
bolt, but rather being taken from the volume surrounding it.

In fact, the main energy conversion doesn't happen until after the
complete initial path has been established and actually propagates upwards.

Where it happens will be influenced by the distance between grounded
conductors and the cloud, so, at the early stages, the presence of
grounds (although not necessarily particularly good ones) will have an
impact. However, it will also depend on the degree of corona discharge,
which will depend on the sharpness of objects, as corona discharges
will, effectively extend the effect of the ground into the air above the
point.

The whole process will be complicated, and there will be a significant
random element, but the presence of grounded conductors will have an
effect in the very early stages.

Lightning induces a current in every nearby conductor. When that pulse of
current reaches a building or electronics, we want to provide a low impedance
path to a safe sink (ground rods) and a high impedance path to the equipment (a
choke). A lightning arrestor is a temporary low impedance path to ground for
conductors that aren’t normally grounded.

The best high impedance path is disconnecting your equipment. That won’t stop a
direct strike, because that will induce currents in the disconnected equipment.
But it will help almost all the time.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] A dumb question about lightning

2023-07-28 Thread David Gilbert

I suspect that is the rule rather than the exception.  I have seen
several satellite and cable TV installations where the installer didn't
bother to ground back to the service entrance and instead simply drove a
short rod into the ground at a point closest to the cable gear.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power-hunting on FT8

2023-07-20 Thread David Gilbert

Sorry, but I would want to see live spectrum displays of my own rig with
a known hardware setup instead of images of some other K3 with unknown
K3 settings and unknown test setup.  Hundreds of us have been following
the just barely flickering 5 bar rule with excellent performance.

You know that you're experiencing power hunting the way you are doing it
... you don't know that you're generating trash the way everyone else
does it.

OK guys - rather than reply individually, let me try to pull
everything together in one message.

In a previous effort at FT8 I followed the standard advice to set the
power slider in WSJT-X (on the lower RIGHT side) so that my K-3 showed
4 bars on the ALC meter, just below the threshold for ALC starting,
and that seemed to work fine.  Then a technically-qualified local ham
showed me spectrum analyzer images of a K-3 at 4 bars versus at no
bars, and the difference was startling - the no bars signal was clean
and narrow, while the 4-bars signal looked like some of those SSB sigs
we hear during contests, wide and with many artifacts.  I am not going
to identify my source here, but I'm fairly sure he reads this
reflector, so maybe he'll join the discussion

Anyway, I'm kind of at sea - WSJT-X works fine with no bars - I've
finished 12 and 17M, as well as digital DXCC in the last few weeks,
following his advice.  But the hunting typically takes almost 20
seconds of transmitting - roughly 1 1/2 FT-8 cycles - to reach full
power - and happens every time I change bands, which puts me behind
the curve if I switch bands, see someone I need, and have to spend 1
1/2 transmit cycles getting up to full power before I can call him
effectively.

Re: [Elecraft] Is KX3 going obsolete soon?

2023-07-19 Thread David Herring
TU Mark…yeah...I didn’t remember that at first…well, one learns (or re-learns)
something new everyday…

The KX2 came out around 2016, and the KX3 around 2011, if I am remembering
correctly now.

Anyhow, the point of that (mis)statement was to say that while there may be a
new rig on the drawing board, we don’t really know, a new rig doesn’t
necessarily mean an older one is going away. This being offered in response to
the ongoing question, posed by others - not me, of whether the KX3 is going to
be end-of-life’d soon.

Speaking of looking ahead, some time ago (year or more?) Wayne did solicit
input from the email list as to what we’d like to see in a rig that would
compete in the KX2 - KX3 market space. That suggests to me that potentially a
KX4 (or something of that ilk) is at least being thought about.

That is just offered as a data point. We cannot necessarily conclude that the

I think you are most likely wrong about that.  Elecraft is quite
obviously paring down their line of products and the lower end of the
scale is just about gone.

I don't have a TS-590S but I'm sure somebody who has one can tell you
how.   Crank up the audio drive from Windows (or whatever), run the
TS-590S in USB mode and crank up the audio gain and compression, etc.
It simply doesn't make sense that you can't overdrive a TS-590S.

Ok, please tell me how to do that. Specific settings please from a test that
you actually ran with a TS-590S.

My tests had all audio drive sliders to max and ALC meter hard on the stop.
Clean signal for FT8 and PSK. I didn't believe that was possible until I ran
the tests.

Of course a K3 can generate bad FT8 signals if you drive the audio hard
enough, but I guarantee that it can be easily done with a TS-590S as
well.  You just didn't do it right.

I've been using a Kenwood TS-590S for about 10 years. I was asked to give a

foul JT65, and now FT8 signals, that I wanted to use my TS-590S to produce bad
signal examples and show the operator errors that caused them. I tried
everything I knew and could not make my TS-590 produce anything but a clean
signal. I had to resort to my library of screen captures of other station's
signals for my presentation.

On the other hand, one of the worst FT8 signals I ever saw was transmitted by a
very experienced local operator using a K3. He fixed the problem as soon as he
saw my screen shots.

Just because someone told you the K3 is the best rig ever made does not mean it
can't produce some really nasty signals!

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Rx is awesome...

2023-07-02 Thread David Gilbert

He never said what kind of antenna he was using.   A lossy antenna is
much worse on transmit than it is on receive.  You can easily tolerate
20 dB or more loss on receive (for pretty much ANY rig) ... but not on
transmit, especially in a contest like FD where there is tons of QRM on
the other end.

The K4 is a very fine rig, but not because of anything he claimed.

You might want to take a closer look at your various mic and transmitter
settings. These have to be adjusted correctly for maximum effect.

I’ve been using my K4 at 100W (per the FD rules) this afternoon on several
bands.
I am 1D OR.
I can hear many many stations but hardly any of them can hear me.
To me, this means that the K4 Rx is bomb-proof, sensitive, selective, and just,
well, awesome.
If the other stations had better receivers, they might be able to hear me
calling them.
They are obviously bogged down with on-site overload/spurii/phase noise etc.
What a pity.
I gave up replying hopelessly to CQFD’s from other 100W stations and went and
did some woodworking instead.
Much more satisfying. Oh well….

Re: [Elecraft] AX1 on tripod

2023-06-25 Thread David Cripps
Hi Julie and Jim

Many thanks for the comments on tripod adapter. The one at the show was a lot
simpler (sorry I didn’t take a photo).

Rather than explain, I’ve made a very crude version with plasticine to show the
concept –

images at
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4ic1v5pzqe8dqx8/wh5Ms0AGEvrmluNFvLmna?dl=0

It simply had the BNC T piece, the ¼ socket, and a 4mm hole for the radial.  As
I mentioned, I think this was 3D printed (and a lot neater than my plasticine!).

It looked like a 3d printed plastic connector with a BNC “T” connector and a

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Rx is awesome...

2023-06-24 Thread David Gilbert

That falls more under the category of lore than science.  By all
accounts the K4 has a terrific receiver, but of the several possible
reasons for what you experienced your receiver is at least a couple
notches down the list.

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping dates

2023-06-24 Thread David Gilbert

Elecraft is a considerably different company now.  A greatly pared down
product line and not at all the same customer communications that it
built its reputation on.

A variety of factors has no doubt led to this, but it is what it is.

Re: [Elecraft] Attempted KX2 purchase!

2023-06-23 Thread David Gilbert

I don't get it ... forewarned of what?

QRZ.com indicates K7CUU is a quite elderly QRP fan who owns a KX2,
according to you the ad says he is ill, and assuming you sent the check
to his listed address the most you could logically assume is that his
wife doesn't read his emails.   Your post seems like a pretty
questionable aspersion.

I made contact with a K7CUU who, apparently on May 22, was selling a KX2, on
this forum, with several accessories.
I had several days of back and forth email communication prior to me mailing a
check on June 19th.
I included a photo of the check and envelope in an email on the 19th.
After that; all email communication ended!! A follow up email the next day,
again, yielded, no response. Tuesday, Wednesday and up to Thursday evening,
nothing.
It was then I called the bank and put a "stop payment" on the check.
A word to the wise. "Forewarned is Forearmed."
Per QRZ, his wife is also a ham operator. The ad said he was ill, however, if
that's the case I would hope she would have equal knowledge of his selling and
respond accordingly.
