Re: [Elecraft] Relocating my KPA-1500 - need cable

Hi Bob,

Peter already has the rig to Y-Box cable. He just needs to replace the Y-Box to
amp cable with longer one.

Peter, replacing the amp to Y-Box cable with longer one is the best method for
remoting your amp. The Ethernet cable from amp to switch in basement will allow
you to use the KPA1500 remote utility. If memory serves, it shows recommended
power on bottom when tuner is engaged. I had to reduce power on certain
sections of 80 meter band.

The K3 will automatically memorize and recall the required drive level set on
each band, but not each band segment, if you set K3 *MENU:PWR SET* to *PER
BAND*. The K3 remembers two drive levels per band, one "barefoot", and the
other "when the AMP is ON and in OPER". So you can leave the K3 set to 100W
drive, then turn on the AMP and put it in OPER mode (you'll see a message on
the K3 when you do that, if connected properly), then turn down the PWR knob to
set the drive level needed on that band when you're using the amp. An asterisk
appears next to the power level on the K3 display, to indicate that you are
setting the "when the amp. is in OPER" power level.
The asterisk goes away when you put the amp. in STBY or OFF. Set the drive
needed once, each band, with the amp. in OPER mode, and and you're all set; the
K3 will set the drive power to the last-used values for amp in OPER mode, on
every band.

The KPA1500 tuner is set by band *segment*, but not the drive power.

40m SSB is a problem child for me where a short Yagi means I have to cut
> back drive power above 7175 or so due to SWR.
>

The K3 will not remember that. How high is the SWR up there? I assume you are
using the KPA1500 ATU, but if SWR is >3:1, I don't think you can run 1500W even
with the tuner engaged.

Yes, you will get that by extending the AUX cable, which must be in series with
the extension. I would try the length you need to see if it works.
Chances are it will work fine if you use a quality cable.

I will do an accurate measurement, but Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s somewhere

Should work fine. I can supply a 2.5' M/M cable from rig to Y-BOX if you need
one.

I'll answer #2 first - if WSJT-X is set to Data/Pkt (which it should) in
setup/radio then yes, the radio will switch to DATA

#1 - I am guessing you are using the USB cable to PC for sound? Check Windows
Line USB Audio CODEC and make sure level in Windows is 100. Then on radio tap
TX and Line IN. Make sure it is set to sound card and I have my level at 32 to
give 5 bars when I click the TUNE button in WSJT-X. I also have power slider in
WSJT-X all the way up.

Hope this helps!

Two questions on using my new K4D for data mode, specifically, FT8.

First, with both VFOs set to DATA mode, no matter what I do I am only able to
get two bars on the ALC meter. I read in the operatorā€™s guide that I should
keep it under the ā€œ5ā€ mark. On my K3, I always kept four solid bars and the 5th
flickering. Obviously two bars is wy under that ā€œ5ā€ mark, but why, when I
advance the MIC level from 1 all the way to max, does the ALC meter only stay
at two bars? I am able to make contacts on FT8 so the thing is working, but Iā€™m
puzzled. Should I be able to get more than two bars of ALC in DATA mode?

Second - the K4 seems to think for itself. After scratching my head regarding
that ALC level issue, I decided to try using USB mode. I put both VFOs into USB
andā€¦ā€¦ this sneaky radio automatically switched both of ā€˜em back to DATA mode as
soon as I transmitted. Is that normal / expected?

[Elecraft] K4D - programming command to set or get low and high cut RX filters?

2022-04-22 Thread rocketnj
Hi All,

I am writing a Node Red interface to the K4D and looking through the
programming reference manual. Is there a command to retrieve or set actual
current low or high cut values of the receive filter? This would be useful
as a way to have more than three filters defined. I know there is a command
to select one of the three filters in the radio, but looking to be able to
change those from an external source.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Shipping via UPS - A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

I just shipped some of my Elecraft gear to someone who had purchased it from
me. The agreement was that I would ship it and they would bear the shipping
expense. The buyer was OK with my using UPS.

So I packed it up and took it to "The UPS Store." There are about 30 of
them in the Denver metro area and about a dozen in the city itself. Before
taking the package there I looked at UPS on-line to see what insurance would
cost. The UPS site said $1.05 per hundred dollars in excess of the $100
included in the shipping rate. When I arrived at the UPS Store they charged
me $4.50 per $100. That difference times the value of what I was shipping
came to well over $100. When I questioned it (more accurately, when I
complained about it) they told me that UPS and The UPS Store are different
entities. The latter, they said, is a network of franchises independent of
the real UPS that "works with" UPS for retail shipping and receiving. So
what I had seen on the UPS website was what UPS charges, not the grossly
inflated premium The UPS Store charges. OK, I asked, how can I ship this
via UPS itself? The answer was a 90 minute round-trip drive to the nearest
real UPS terminal.

The UPS Store does not charge real UPS rates. They have UPS in their name.
They use a logo indistinguishable from the UPS logo. Their counter clerks
wear UPS Brown. There was a standar UPS truck parked in front of the shop.
There was NOTHING visible to me in the store that indicated it wasn't a UPS
shop. Maybe everyone on this reflector already knows about this. Until
this morning I didn't.

There's an old maxim that a happy customer tells one other person about
their experience. An unhappy customer tells ten other people.

[Elecraft] K4D R29 beta ESSB and CESSB - Rolls off low end TX frequency response when COmp at 1 or higher.

2022-04-05 Thread rocketnj
Hi All,

Just received a K4D from a friend. I have it connected and just getting used
to the radio.

We operate ESSB (4 kHz LSB) on the lower end of 80 meters where there is
ample room without causing interference. When you rag chew for several hours
it is much more pleasing to listen to.

I upgraded the radio to R29 beta and set TX to ESSB and TX BW to 4 kHz.
First thing I noticed is the low frequency rolloff point is fixed and not
adjustable. The TX bandwidth seems to use the same low frequency cutoff.

Second thing I noticed is the CESSB compressor seems to be programmed in
both ESSB and normal TX mode as a mid band compressor, boosting the
midrange, which then makes the audio sound very flat. This happens as soon
as compression is 1 or higher.

This is fine for normal SSB TX to add punch and help crack pileups but in
ESSB mode it should affect the complete TX passband. I guess I have gotten
used to a couple of other brand SDRs that do use CESSB and don't attenuate
the lows and highs when engaged.

I'd like a feature request that the CESSB compression work over the whole
range of TX audio in ESSB mode and also have the low frequency and high
frequency cutoffs on TX in ESSB be adjustable, just like the RX filters are.
The CESSB implementation for normal SSB is fine.

2. Yes. Shipping for a while now.

Here's my comparison of the two since I own both. The KPA1500 fan noise is
better to my ears sitting on the desk 4 feet from my operating position that
the PG-XL. I use the 1500 at home while the PG-XL due to its LAN integration

Both are great amps and with the last updates done to my KPA1500 a little

Subject: [Elecraft] Sudden KpA1500 power reduction

I'm in the ARRL CW contest this weekend and the KPA1500 has been working
fine. However, a few minutes ago I noticed I was getting about half the
output power on 20 meters that I typically get with around 30 watts drive
(about 600w vs 1200w). PA current is less than normal, around 30a.
Similar problem on the higher bands, I can no longer get 1000w. On 40m I
can, but it requires more drive.

Seems like something died in the amp; I'm not familiar with the design, but
perhaps an output module. No errors or ill behavior from the amp other than
the loss of power.

I will contact Elecraft support unless there is something I'm missing here.
I just looked in the archive and see that this has happened to others I
use the amp remotely so I guess I'll have to take it home with me.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 1500 fan speed at turn off

2021-01-23 Thread rocketnj
I use Node Red to control and monitor the KPA1500. I have written into the
flow to delay turn off of the amp when I click power off until the
temperature of the amp is down to 38 C. The fans are programmed to turn off
@ 39C.
This way I can walk away after clicking OFF and not wait for it to cool off.

Node Red is free and the amp can be controlled from any web browser.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to keep the fan turned on in the KPA-1500 after
you power it off till the internal temperature reaches its lower temp?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 goes into firmware load

2021-01-13 Thread rocketnj
I use the Wake on LAN packet via Ethernet to turn on my KPA1500. This is sent
from a flow I wrote in Node Red running on a Raspberry Pi. It allows me control
and monitoring of the amp (meters, power on/off, op/standby, ant 1/2) from any
web browser, including smartphones with two factor authentication.
Using this method I have not had the KPA1500 go into firmware upload mode.

Dick has pointed me at the mechanism. I had forgotten that the REM input is fed
from the K3 12V output, and that is what turns the amp on. If that input is at
12V when applying 240V, you go into firmware load.

So a slight mystery remains, as reported by others, that this sometimes occurs
for no apparent reason, at times when weā€™re "pretty sure" the 240V is already
on. When dead-starting and turning on the 240V, I always wait a few sec before
turning on the K3 remotely. But sometimes it comes up in firmware load anyway.
Thankfully this is always recoverable.

FYI: You can also turn on a KPA1500 or 500 by pulsing a line in the Aux bus via
a K3 macro. Info on this is on p. 21 of the K3 Remote Owner's Manual.

on, and when we investigate, itā€™s in the firmware load state. The KPA1500
Utility is then able to reload it via USB, and weā€™re operational again. Nothing
on the computer should be accessing its USB port to cause it to go into that

My objective is:
Have the PF1 button switch the Input to the K3s with the command ^PF1^XI0;
Have the PF2 button change the input type to serial (for Flex) with the

Neither one is working, where am I going wrong?

I assume that after I have these working with the command tested in the

In the October issue of QST, at p. 62, the ARRL announced that Jim Brown,

You could possibly look at Node Red which runs on a Raspberry Pi. I use it with
a KPA1500 and I know there is a flow (programming) for the KPA500 as well. The
Pi runs on your home network and you use a USB to serial cable from the KPA500

If you are interested we have a Google Groups.io site

I use the KAT500 remote software and it works great. I have only one problem
with it, I can not tell if the power is on or off. This matters because when
the remote site looses power the state of the KAT500 is unknown and the program
does not indicate if the power is ON or OFF. Is there a way to tell?

I can keep trying the POWER button then the TUNE button until it works, but it
would be much better for a positive indication of the power state by button
color or some other indication in the application.

I have set the "Initial Power" in the KAT500 utility to be "Power On"
when DC is applied, but not sure this is always observed. I have no other way
to see the remote site when this happens.

Any suggestions?

The event was free and enjoyable. Being able to interact via chat with reps
from different companies was a great idea. The prerecorded presentations
were for the most part great.

The site navigation needs to be improved, especially on an iPad. The text
chat on the iPad had the last line of text in a long chat obscured by the
text entry window where you enter your own text. Also default view of a
booth did not show the navigation bar underneath. You needed to take your
finger and drag the window down to see it. The Chat button should be more
prominent and not all the way to the right. These are things that can be
fixed for next time.

Again, in the crazy world we live in now it was enjoyable to have some time
to take our mind away to better thoughts (buying a new radio or amp).

I've made some recent changes to KPA1500 processing of transceiver frequency
messages from Kenwood, Flex, and Yaesu radios. Icom CI-V is unchanged.

If you use one of these radios and use the KPA1500's XCVR SERIAL connection

your help in testing a new version. If you generally use a logging program

Disconnect the power (red and black) cable between the amp head and the power
supply and turn the amp on. Is the "HV" light on the power supply still RED? If
so, the power supply is bad... send it in for repair.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 with K4 tracks VFOs with 1 kHz resolution

2020-07-21 Thread rocketnj
I have seen this behavior using a non-Elecraft exciter (Kenwood) and KPA1500
amp on digital modes. In my case it was right after connecting the new radio
and TX audio levels were too high, causing splattering. The freq counter in
the amp wasn't happy. Lowered audio level to where there is no ALC
deflection on the exciter and problem never happened again.

Just a thought but check your ALC when on WinLink. You should not see any
ALC indication.

Interesting ... I am seeing issues with my KAT500 not holding a setting, but
jumping to (and displaying) a frequency 200 - 300 KHz lower unpredictably
during a Winlink Vara session. It always comes back to the correct
frequency when the rig is transmitting, but has to go thru a short
relay-clatter routine to get there.

This is on 80, 40 and 30 meters (all I have tested so far).

For example, if the dial frequency is at 7101 the tuner can't seem to decide
whether to sit on 7104 or 7096. That doesn't seem to cause a problem as
much as when it suddenly drops to 6874, 6864 or 6856. I am seeing similar
behavior on 80m and 30m.

I recently did a total reset and reloaded the firmware (v01.75).

Any thoughts? Bin width?

Thx.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 with K4 tracks VFOs with 1 kHz resolution

2020-07-20 Thread rocketnj
Hi Wayne,

Can future KPA1500 firmware allow the smaller bins to be utilized via
standard CAT protocol over TCP/IP? I can feed the amp exact frequency info
via a Node Red Raspberry Pi. Right now using CAT over the KXUSB cable.
Also it would be desirable to have CAT take priority over internal frequency
counter on the amp. I've had the internal counter fail and the amp was in
never never land when trying to transmit.

I do have to say that after all the mods were done (current to when I sent
in the RF deck) the amp has worked flawlessly. Many thousands of QSOs.
Any way to track if there are additional mods to the amp that have been
incorporated since last serviced? I would think if there were something
major that existing owners would be notified.

Hi Andy,

The improved resolution ensures that the correct bin is detected when you
get within +/- 1 kHz of the target ATU LC data bin rather than +/- 8 kHz.
This improves repeatability of selected LC values vs. VFO frequency,
especially on 160 and 80 meters where it's most likely to matter.

This also means that, in the future, we could use smaller bin width on some
bands if desired. This could be helpful if you were using the ATU to
fine-tune a very narrowband antenna such as a loop or electrically short
vertical.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Pure Signal Output

2020-07-02 Thread rocketnj
Yes, depending on serial number of your amp it will output the correct level
without any additional attenuation. New amps have the mod already done. I
modified my amp s/n 423 by changing two surface mount chip resistors on the
filter board in the amp. Not for the faint of heart. One of the chip resistors
is the size of "16" in the date 2016 on a penny. TINY!!!

On older non-modified amps Pure Signal will only work at higher power since the
level out the sample port is too low. It will work in the 1000 to 1500 watt
range but not down to 20 watts like it does after the mod. Current production
amps have this mod done along with several other mods that were incorporated
after my amp was purchased.

I HIGHLY recommend this mod be done by Elecraft unless you absolutely have the
experience and equipment to do surface mount rework properly. Last thing you
want is a $6000 paper weight
I do not know when this mod was put into production amps.

My Pure Signal has performed from 20 to 1500 watts output withy an Anan 7000dle
(blue face) without any attenuation added. I have since sold the Anan but
keeping the KPA1500 as it works VERY well. Solid and dependable after several
mods were done to bring it up to current production standards.

If you think I am kidding about the size of the chip resistor I can send a
picture to anyone interested. I did take a picture next to a 2016 penny for
reference šŸ˜Š

Are you talking about removing the cable from the amp? It just pulls out. There
is some tension on the contacts so it will require a little force. Just pull
straight out.

If you are talking about the chassis mounted Power Poles, there are screws on
the inside that hold a bracket and wedge which keep them secure to the chassis.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 fan mod done - MUCH better

2020-06-04 Thread rocketnj
Hi All,

Received the new LED board for my KPA1500 power supply. Easy to swap out,
six plugs and two screws. You can move one plug at a time to the new board
so there is no chance of screwing anything up. To put the screws back in I
suggest a Phillips screwdriver with magnetic tip. It took more time to
remove the 16 screws from the top cover than to swap the board.

THANK YOU Elecraft!

To make it come off *really* clean, I like to put the 1st layer of vinyl tape
sticky side out. Then self-fusing tape, another layer of vinyl tape (3m 33+ or
88). And because overkill is never enough, paint with some Scotchkote last!

Hi Peter,

If the amp is on, there needs to be at least some PS fan activity at a low
speed to cool the PS in idle.

What s/n is your 1500? On later s/ns we changed a resistor in the ps fan
circuit to slow them down a bit more.

An alternative is to swap your ant 1 and 2 connections, putting the 6m ant on
ANT 1. Then you can listen to 6m with the amp off.

Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 low power and poor receive on 40 meters

2020-05-20 Thread rocketnj
Hi Don,

You nailed it. No output from the 15 MHz crystal. The other three bands are
showing good output. I checked the relays K1 and K2 to verify each has pins 3
to 4 conductivity when on 40 meters (set radio to 40 meters, power down, and
remove filter board since relays are latching. One side of crystal checks good
to ground and the other side checks good to P1 pin 4.

Ordered new 15 MHz crystal from Elecraft.

Thanks for the advice. Once I got the RF volt meter it took a few minutes to
find the problem.

There is the possibility that the 40 meter crystal has low activity.
Check the RF voltage at pin 4 of P1 on the band board. You should read 70mV or
more with an RF Probe or 200mV+ peak to peak if using a 'scope with a 10X probe.

A good working K1 will develop at least 5 watts.
Make up an RF probe if you don't have one. It does not have to be fancy, just
stick the component leads through a piece of cardboard and solder the leads
together. You need a 1N34 diode (not a silicon diode) Elecraft does have a kit.

That is fine for resonant antennas but I would like to monitor between the
amp and tuner.

I know the amp has a sample out port for adaptive predistortion. I had
changed the two small (very small) resistors on the filter board to adjust
the sample out level to work with an Anan radio with no attenuation. I
believe the new amps are shipping with this mod already done.

Too bad the sample out couldn't be used on the LP700...

I definitely wouldn't bother to modify the KPA1500 to have a monitor loop!

I bought two sensors -- one between the K3 and the KPA1500, and the other
between the amplifer output and the antenna feedline. The
LP500/LP700 supports up to four sensors.

This allows easy swapping from exciter output to amplifier output with a
button press, and allows amplifier linearity monitoring using the LP700.

Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 low power and poor receive on 40 meters

2020-05-20 Thread rocketnj
Hi Don

I have done that using the Marconi for RX, then touching up for TX. I
understand 40 is a combo of 30 & 40 settings. After carefully retuning (done it
several times) the best I can get on 40 is about 60 to 75 mW. 30 makes better
than 2 watts. The menu for power out is set to 2.0 on 40. Receive sensitivity
is 10 to 15 dB down from 30 meter receive.

I read that the windings on T3 and T4 are critical. I have counted the turns
and verified which side #1,2,3 and 4 are coming off the core. Both T3 and T4
appear to be fine. There is enough wire left over in the box the radio was in
so I can rewind T3 or T4. From what I see on the schematic T4 would most likely
be the suspect (if it is the transformer.)

I am going to borrow an RF Power meter with probe and check 30 vs 40 meter
readings on the Premix in & out and the RF filter in & out. That will greatly
help pinpoint the issue.

Dave,

Refer to the K1FL4 instructions and re-tune the trimmers on the filter board.
They MUST be done in the proper band sequence - 30 meters before 40m, 15m
before 20m. The PreMixer portion is usually the most critical for power output.

"It would seem to require an internal modification and two additional rear

FCC photos shows LPF RF Out is a BNC and tuner RF In is a BNC.Should be an
easy mod if there is room on the rear panel for 2 BNC connectors. Perhaps the
LP-700 coupler would fit inside the LP1500 case?

Easy to speculate about mods to someone else's equipment.

[Elecraft] Looking to add LP700 to KPA1500 - ideas?

2020-05-20 Thread rocketnj
Hi All,

I am thinking about adding a Telepost LP700 to my station but I would need
to insert it between the amp and tuner (which are integrated together in the
KPA1500).

Any ideas if it is worth doing something to loop the RF out of the amp to
the coupler and back in again? Probably no easy way to do it.

Just a thought.

[Elecraft] K1-4 low power and poor receive on 40 meters

2020-05-20 Thread rocketnj
Hi All,

I am going to sell a K1-4 (4 band 40, 30, 20, 15) for the estate of my
Elmer. In testing the radio I found 40 meters is about 15dB less sensitivity
than 30 and power out about 75 mW. I have double checked the values of
components on the filter board to ensure they are correct and installed
correctly. I also checked T3 and T4 which can cause issues on 40. T3 has 23
turns on the secondary with three turns on the primary. T4 has 24 turns on
secondary and two turns on primary. Another symptom is the CH trimmer cap
seems to be at one end of tuning range (not seeing double peak).

Note - the radio does not have the ATU option and 30 meters is set for 10.1
MHz and not 10.0 (double checked crystals).

>From what I can measure so far the relays seem to be working "as designed".
When I switch from 15 meters to 40 meters I can see the pulses to the relays
to switch them (latching relays. I did notice in the 4 band filter manual it
says K6 relay is not active on 40 but I do see it active and looking at the
schematic K6 switches between 15/20 operation and 30/40 so I think there is
a typo in the filter board manual at the bottom of page 23.

I am using a Marconi service monitor for testing. I have not built an RF
probe yet and hoping someone has seen this symptom before. I would like to
get the K1 fully operational as the proceeds are going to my Elmer's widow

Subject: [Elecraft] A broken K3

Hello again

I finally sorted out the problem with my brother , K0ZK's Elecraft K3.
It was an oldie with a serial number in the 300s and it died on him in the
middle of a QSO. It has been dead for about six months and he is not in the
best of health, so I figured I would try to fix it for him. Elecraft Tech
Support came through even with all of the Virus conditions rocking the entire
economy. Symptoms were no TX or RX, but everything seemed to be working as
relays clicked as you changed bands, and the dial indications seemed OK. I
traced the problem to a missing synthesizer signal to the first mixer and also
the 2nd mixer on TX. I tried swapping out the synthesizer, but had no luck as
the 2nd synthesizer did not work either. With the expert help and advice from
Tech Support I found that my synthesizer was missing the 8 VDC on one of the
connector pins. Checking the 8 volt rail, the resistance to ground seemed OK,
so I removed the 8 V regulator and supplied 8 volts from an external current
regulated power supply. It pulled about 230 ma at 8 volts. The K3 t
ook off and started working again with 8 volts supplied.
I had to do another synthesizer CAL, but after doing that, the rig is good to
go on all bands.

I was hoping that I had a new 8 volt regulator in my junque box. After an
exhaustive search I found everything BUT and 8 volt regulator, so I will have
to order one. I'll also get some upgrade kits from Elecraft to bring K3 #387
into the 21st century. Gold pins are on top of the list.

Thanks for the excellent tech support help, Elecraft!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500

2020-02-20 Thread rocketnj
Sounds like an issue with the power detection circuit on the filter board. I
had the 3 watt resistor unsolder itself from the board (it is mounted upside
down so gravity helped). I had all kinds of weird power reading issues that
were impossible for the input power and current draw.

I suggest calling Elecraft before doing anything else as you can cause more
damage continuing the transmit. Elecraft was excellent in diagnosing my problem
and sent me the necessary parts to repair it in the field (I did work in
electronics, so familiar with surface mount work)

Presuming that is a known 'good' dummy load for that power level, have you run
the output calibration of the driver radio (K3/S also presumed) as a starting
point?

If that has been done (successfully, multiple times), check to make SURE that
the radio (driver) antenna tuner is BYPASSED (not presenting an odd load into
the amp).

Watch CAREFULLY that the driver output is constant (no dirty control, no spike
etc.).

Then it's time to be concerned about the 80M tuned input circuit failing on the
KPA1500 and call Elecraft for specific tests. When the amp sees
 >=19 watts input, it wigs out, badly. (But the extreme outputs ARE
 >impressive; it's nice to have overhead at legal limit).

GL, please let us know how it was resolved, Rick NK7I

Subject: [Elecraft] Unexpected K-POD frequency excursions

Hi all,
In CQWW this weekend I ran across a problem that's been plaguing me in
previous contests too. With the K-pod connected to the radio (K3s) using the
supplied cable I'm finding that the main VFO QSYs down about 100-200 Hz on a
random basis. I tried loading the flat cable up with Mix 31 ferrites to no
effect. I haven't thoroughly tested this on all bands, but it definitely
occurred on 20 through 160. It was not a regular occurrence; maybe every 2-3
minutes it would happen. When I engage the VFO lock on the front panel of
the radio it stops doing it.

I has also been know to shut the radio off once every few days when I touch
the K-pod, which I'm attributing to static electricity. While I love the
functionality of my K-pod, I had to take it offline due to the frequency
excursions. I'd like to get a fix for this if at all possible. Suggestions?

Check your connections. Loose or poor PL-259s. Also check to see if the
antenna is close to something causing it to arc over. I had one antenna that
used ladder line with solid conductors. Due to it moving around in the wind
one of the conductors developed a break which tested fine under low power or
with an analyzer but would have problems at higher power. I've since moved
to Davis RF copper clad stranded ladder line.

My KPA-1500 switches from operate to standby due to reflected power more
than 200w whenever drive power exceeds about 8 watts on 7 MHz. The forward
power at that point is about 400w. The antenna is a double bazooka that
shows an SWR of about 1.2 on a RigExpert AA-230Pro antenna analyzer. A
Telepost LP-100A digital wattmeter shows SWR 1.3 with Z=52, R=49, Ph=17, and
X=15. The KP1500 tunes to an SWR of what it labels 1.1 on that frequency.
The latest firmware, version 2.27 is installed. This problem does not occur
with double bazooka antennas on 80m or 30m, or with Yagis from 20m to 6m. It
seems to me that there is a brief surge in reflected power at the very onset
of the transmission that triggers the response, but that the reflected power
quickly decreases to normal levels of just a few watts. Any ideas for
dealing with this problem would be much appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500 Attenuated Receive Signals

2019-09-08 Thread rocketnj
I had the issue with my 1500 several months ago and it was traced to one of
the PIN diodes. Good news is after trip to the left coast for repair and all
ECO updates applied the amp has been perfect.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 1500 Remote Program V1.27

2019-07-05 Thread rocketnj
What I would like to see is ability to control amp from a smartphone, either
native app or a web page via login/password. I've been working on the latter
using a Raspberry Pi in the shack talking to the amp via Ethernet. It acts
as a web server. I have the telemetry working now and next step is the
control logic (on/off, oper/stby, fan speed increase/decrease, etc).

See attached picture. This is from a web browser.

The new software release V1.27 (6/21/19) will now allow WAN connections to
your KPA 1500 for true remote operations. You can now get rid of the extra
devices and or computer to control you KPA1500 remotely outside your LAN.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 input too high

2019-04-29 Thread rocketnj
Hi Andy

I am thinking the reactance the antenna presents to the tuner may have
something to do with it. Even though SWR shows about 3.7:1 it may well do
with causing the issue.
At 3.636 the capacitance is 719 and inductance is 2100.
The only band I need a tuner is 80 meters. All other bands are resonant (I
do not operate 160)

I've opened a service request on the web site as well as following up with a
detailed email to support along with operating conditions and log file.

The amp will need to visit home to get repaired and updated. Another KPA1500
user with s/n close to mine just got his back from repair and there were a
few updates done to his that are definitely not done to mine.

Was the KPA1500 tested at maximum output power and duty cycle with a loading
condition that required drive power to be just below the level that would
trip the "input power too high" monitor?

Is it possible that certain loading conditions would require a drive power
level high enough to overheat the input resistor?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 input too high

2019-04-27 Thread rocketnj
The input too high only happens into a non-resonant load (tuner in circuit).
Also noticed on 20 now when tuner is in operate there is a 3 dB drop in
noise floor.

This is the second time the 3 watt resistor has desoldered itself from the
board and both times the resistor is discolored.

Only one RF path from radios through switching into amp input. Amp output
feeds a 1x4 antenna switch. No other radios transmitting in near proximity.

Definitely something failed on filter board.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 input too high

2019-04-27 Thread rocketnj
Don, first thing I did. Radio is indeed sending 20 watts on 80 meters. Is a
Flex 6600, not capable of 191 watts the amp said it was seeing.

The 3 watt, 3k Ohm resistor on the filter board is discolored and one side
desoldered itself. This provides RF to the onboard frequency counter. This is
the second time in three months that resistor has been an issue. Last time it
was discolored and fell off the board (mounted upside down).

This time it appears to be more involved than just the 3 watt resistor.

What are you using to drive the KPA1500?

Connect the driving transceiver to an external wattmeter, and then to a dummy
load. Do a KeyDown in CW mode and see what the actual power output is shown on
the external wattmeter.

My thinking is that your driving transceiver has lost its ability to control
the power output. Do the test with an external wattmeter and a dummy load
rather than depending on the power indications from either the KPA1500 or the
driving transceiver. In other words, check each piece of gear one piece at a
time.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 input too high

2019-04-27 Thread rocketnj
Hi All,

KPA-1500 s/n 423

Operating 80 meter SSB running 20 watts drive with tuner engaged for about
1240 watts out PEP. Remote app shows maximum power handling of 1620 watts.

Out of nowhere I got an input power too high alarm @ 191 watts! The radio is
capable of 100 watts out max and verified is set to 20 watts.

Set tune power to 10 watts.

Meter in amp during standby reads 10 watts.

Switch to operate and immediately get input power too high alarm @ 91 watts.

Switch to 20 meters (resonant antenna). No issue - 10 watts tune is
approximately 400 watts out with no error.

Any ideas?

Yes, you're right, and I will miss the ability to have multiple CAT
connections...that's a biggie and the ability to mute the mic on .wav playback
as well. I should have said that I have (almost) all the functionality that I
had before for the features that I use. At this point, I'm trying to simplify
things for the next couple of months, get things working reliably, then
introduce an SDRPlay, Skimmer, and Win4K3 after Dayton.

I do miss the Winkeyer's speed control knob, but I can get used to just using
N1MM PageUp/Dn keyboard commands or the K3s's front panel control knob. I had a
great run with the MK and MK-II over the years and yeah, there are a few things
I'll miss, for sure, but the reduced complexity--both physical and software/PC
related, and reduced potential for RF ingress are substantial positives as
well.

Yes, the K3/KIO3B or K3S USB Audio CODEC behaves exactly like the K3 with
analog Line In/Line Out. The USB Audio CODEC is essentially "grafted on" to
the Line In/Line Out. In fact "Speaker (USB AUDIO CODEC)" is connected in
parallel with the analog Line Out jack.

Please refer to the K3S Owners Manual and the K3S schematic package on-line.

Not by a long shot ... you no longer have a hardware based FSK, a K1EL WinKey
keyer, support for multiple CAT connections (for syncing an external SDR
panadapter), the ability to mute the microphone when playing an SSB voice file,
access to dedicated CI-V and/or SteppIR control channel, etc. While you may
not have used all those features you certainly do not have the same
functionality as you had with the microKEYER II.

I talked to Peter on the phone. He has no bias current when amp is transmitting
with no power applied (key on SSB without talking. He is reading 54 volts and
has tried power cycling amp from power supply switch and reseated all cables.
Definitely BAD distortion on SSB (we are close enough to hear each other).
Looks like one RF device let loose and it is dragging down the bias voltage.
That is my guess.

I think a two-tone test is the best evaluation tool.. The generator is built
into the K3 if you have another receiver that you can use to listen to the amp
output. I use an SDR-IQ which is a very nice tool for this but any other SDR

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 vs SPE Amps

2019-02-12 Thread rocketnj
I have had the SPE 1.3k and now have the KPA1500. I drive them with a Flex 6600
and Anan 7000dle.

The issue I had with the SPE 1.3k was once you start pushing it past 1 KW out
the TX IMD starts to really get bad. This is due to the single LDMOS RF device
being pushed towards its limit. The other issue I had with the SPE is heat
dissipation on long SSB transmissions and digital transmissions. The fans would
ramp up very quickly and were more noise than I wanted in the shack. As it
heated up the power would drop off high to mid power.

The KPA1500 fans will still spin up faster with long transmissions or during
digital operation but the power supply unit can be located under the desk,
reducing some of the noise. Also the fan profile is such that they can be set
to have the PA deck turn off or be set to one of five levels. If the temp
increases past a certain point the fans will increase.

The other thing is the tuner on the KPA1500 is MUCH better than the SPE 1.3k.
The SPE amp would not tune my G5RV on 80. The KPA1500 tunes it, although on one
end of the band at reduced power (1200 watts). So the tuning range on the
KPA1500 is superior.

I'm happy I spent the additional money on the KPA1500.

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA1500 vs SPE Amps

Has anyone had experience with both the KPA1500 and any of the current (1.3K,
1.5K or 2K) Expert Linears from SPE? I was initially leaning towards the
1.3K-FA without the ATU. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to go
with an ATU. The price difference to get less than 1db in going from 1300 watts
to 1500 was also a bit of a concern. However, Iā€™ve never pushed my 3x8874s to
more than 1200 and only on the low bands. I have a KPA500 with the KAT500 and
itā€™s great. However, in a 160 pileup a bit more power would help. Changing
bands quickly is awesome. That has me leaning towards the KPA1500. If anyone
would like to share their thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, Iā€™m wondering if anyone has run their KPA500 and a KPA1500 off of the
same K3? If so, how did you set it up?

Tnx es 73,
Dave N8AG

[Elecraft] KPA1500 loose 3K Ohm/3 watt resistor

2019-01-20 Thread rocketnj
Hi All

Went to move the amp today and heard something loose in the PA deck on the
KPA1500. I removed the bottom cover to find a 3 K Ohm, 3 watt resistor
laying loose to the side of the PA board. There is indication that the
resistor has been heated. Checking the resistor with my Fluke 77 shows it is
still within tolerance.

Any ideas where this goes on the board? (PA/Filter/other)?

I've looked at the boards and cannot see where it came off. I also looked at
the pictures Elecraft submitted to the FCC and they do not show it.

Here's a link of a picture of the resistor.

Hoping someone can answer this in case Elecraft is off tomorrow for MLK Jr.
Holiday.

Where was the email about the important/required KPA1500 update posted?

The first I heard about it was Rich's KUDOS reflector post. I've gone back
through my reflector digests and emails and haven't found any announcement
about the update.

BTW, I just updated to version 2 with no problems.
