Re: [Elecraft] Headset Hubbub

2023-10-12 Thread Al via Elecraft
It turns out that while Yamaha has discontinued the CM-500
headset-microphone as a retail item, It is still being manufactured as an
accessory for a Yamaha LC4 music learning system. This is a system where all
the students in the classroom wear a headset and the teacher can talk to
everyone at once, or converse with individual students, similar to the
language learning labs many of us sat in back in high school.

A large music distributor, sweetwater.com, sells the Yamaha language
learning system and has occasionally had CM-500s available at a reasonable
price. I bought one there not too long ago. Their website is not currently
showing the headset as available, but you might try giving them a call. The
salesperson who assisted me was named Ritchie. I have no relationship with
the firm other than being an occasional customer.

What are hams going to do when their CM-500's break?

Are you sure that the mic was DOA? It has an electret microphone which
requires voltage to work.

1. The original factory packaging was gone.

3. There was no manual.
4. The mic was dead.

I'm betting it was a DOA return item that was then sent out to me thinking I

On top of that, they've been out of manufacture for quite some time so all
that the stores have are the dregs.

So now I open again for other suggested headsets in the $100 range. The
CM500 was a gaming headset so that could be a source. This is going to be a

Any more ideas?

I had been using my Yamaha HP-1 headphones on my Kenwood TS-590. I decided
they were too good for amateur radio and wanted to keep them in good condition.

I had followed the threads on the CM-500 and purchased Koss SB/45. They are
far from the quality feel of the Yamaha but are reasonably comfortable and shut
out external sounds better. I used them to make several CW DX QSO and they
worked fine. Not as nice as the Yamaha for listening to the split pile up over
a 3 kHz span but quite adequate for the job. Very few phone QSO with them but
no complaints with the frequency response.

I have not hooked up the microphone yet.

#1, contact Amazon customer service and inform them what you reported
here. Some years ago I had a similar situation with a Baofeng handheld, it
came with frequencies programmed in it. Amazon was not happy and
immediately issued a refund.
Years ago I bought the CM-500 and a Logitech gaming headset at a much lower
price. (For my K3 and Flex-6300). They both worked very well on both rigs
and I received similar audio reports. The headset padding did not last as
long, but considering it was 1/3rd the price of the CM-500, that was
acceptable.

Re: [Elecraft] Headset to mic adapter K3/K3s

2018-07-25 Thread Don Wilhelm

Gary,

The adapter is the same as the one for Kenwood - Heil AD-1-K to use with
the Front Panel mic jack.
Or you can just plug the microphone and phones into the rear of the
K3/K3S - no adapter required.

You will need to turn bias on - that microphone has the same electret
element as the ProSet-K2.

I am a happy CM-500 user. Note that while you have any headset
mic input connected thru the back panel, you can still use the
hand held microphone push to talk switch. Until you get into
voice operations in pileups, where you might want a foot switch,
it will work well for you. (IMHO, VOX is too slow for anything
but rag chewing.)

Re: [Elecraft] Headset/Mic Suggestions

2016-12-05 Thread George Kidder

Hi Bill,

I have used a computer headset with my K3 for many years. It seems to
be a noise-cancelling variety - at least it has the set of noise holes
in the back of the microphone case. Very light weight, but does not
exclude room noise on receive - which for me is good, since I can hear
the XYL over it! Just plug into the back of the rig, set rig for rear
input and bias, and you're off.

I don't remember where I got the headset, but it certainly was not
expensive. Maybe $10 at the time.

can attach this mic or similar to them. The work really well for noise

 Bill,

I use the Yamaha c500. They work pretty good, are comfortable and have a
boom mic attached. I also do not use SSB very often (only November SS) the
rest of the year I keep it velcroed to the headset frame. They also don't
cost an arm and a leg and your favorite offspring. I think about $50 or
$60. Worth a try.

Good luck

Bill,

Get a Yamaha CM-500. It is not noise cancelling, but can plug directly
into the K3 rear jacks. Select the rear panel mic and turn on bias for it.

They are not noise cancelling, but the big cuffs cover the ears nicely
and seal well.

As far as noise pickup in the microphone, use the TX Noise Gate in the K3.

[Elecraft] Headset splitter for KX2, KX3

2016-07-08 Thread David Deitrick
I have seen some references to a splitter that would allow a mic/phone headset
(eg. apple ear buds) to be used with KX2 & KX3. The item referred to in the
posts was backwards, with one 4 ring socket & (2) 3 ring jacks. I found a
StarTech adaptor on amazon that has one 4 ring socket & (2) 3 ring plugs, which
would split the single plug headset into to plugs allowing the use of both the
Mic and Phone jacks on the radio. It too is made by StarTech & can be found on
Amazon here:

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-MUYHSFMM-Headset-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B0058DOWH6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1467977811=8-1=MUYHSFMM

Price is about $6 US.

But weren't we discussing the SB-forty-FIVE?

The *electret* mic in the Koss SB-45 is excellent, and works very well
with the K3 for a wide range of different voices. For those who prefer a
lighter headset with on-ear earpieces, the Koss CS-100 gives equally
good results.

Both the SB-45 and the CS-100 can be highly recommended.

2016-06-21 Thread Walter Underwood
Reports on the list favor the Yamaha CM-500 or the Koss SB-45. Both have
electret mics. In this price range (under a few hundred dollars), an electret
mic is by far the best option.

The Koss SB-40 has a dynamic mic. I haven’t tried it, but making a good dynamic
mic at that price is a huge engineering challenge.

I second that John. I bought one 2+ years ago. It arrived days before
CQWW CW. I wore them all weekend and never a complaint. One of the
really cool things is that they come with a parts list. If you ever
have to repair them they sell replacement parts.

I've never looked back.

All - Just my 2 cents worth as an almost 100% CW guy. I have been using the
Radiosport Headsets from Arlan Communications for a while.

I have their model RS20S with the gel earpads and cloth covers for my K2
(serial #455) as it is my QRP contesting rig and these phones are SUPERB!
Has great isolation so I don't hear anything but what is coming thru the
phones (which would be good for field day). The gel pads and cloth covers
make them very comfortable for long sessions while contesting.
Additionally, they are stereo so they would work perfectly with a K3/K3s
where you could put one receiver's output in each ear for chasing DX when
running split.

I also have their model RS20CR, which is monaural and 600 ohms. This is for
use with my vintage gear (Drake C-Line, R-4A and 2-B and Collins 75A-1).
Also a outstanding performer, particularly when listening to the SW
broadcast.

I have not used their headset with microphone combination but if it works as
well as these listen-only units it should be just terrific!

I forgot to mention that the SB-45 also has a nice padded

the rough webbing of the CM500. Judging from the pictures of the

2016-05-26 Thread Dave Hachadorian
I have both the CM500 and SB-45. The SB-45 is the one I use. It
is more comfortable on my head. I wear eyeglasses, and it
doesn't squeeze the side rails as hard, and is generally more
comfortable for me. Both headsets function equally well, but the
SB-45 microphone need a couple more dB of boost in equalizer bin
4.

Many thanks to all who have offered their findings on the relative
merits of the CM500 v KOSS SB45.

I will get a set of SB45s for comparison, at the price it's really not
an issue. Albeit, with the CM500, better the devil you know applies.

Another vote for the KOSS SB45, especially as it is much easier to buy in the

I had a CM500 but the mic broke after about a year, so I kept it just as a pair

Same here. Better physical design than the CM500 except for the boom mic.

Audio performance is the same.

[Elecraft] Headset

2016-05-26 Thread Mike Harris

Hi,

If I remember correctly the Koss SB45 headset has been offered as a
suitable substitute for the K3 weapon of choice the Yamaha CM500. Any
experience out there?

My much used CM500 are starting to shed the leatherette covering and the
foam inside the cavities is wearing away. CM500 can be rather difficult
to source.

Both front PTT(in mic connector) and rear Phono jack are in parallel.

I use either VOX (for contesting) and a home-made PTT switch plugged into rear
jack for other use.

Under the "flap" are two SMD push buttons wired in parallel with a cable to
rear PTT. Box is 3.5 X 4 inches and made on my 3D printer.

What about your preference for enabling several (ie pickle and foot
switch) of these in parallel

I use both a foot switch and a hand switch (PTT switch from an old
Telex headset) in parallel. Both have RCA connectors and I use a
"Y" cable to connect them to the PTT jack on the back of the K3.

I use (4) PTT foot switch.

I don't understand your "in parallel" question. I have one foot switch
plugged into the K3's rear panel PTT jack, and use it for the Heil GM-5
plugged into the MIC connector on the front panel, and for the Yamaha
CM500 headset plugged into the rear panel MIC and PHONES jacks.

The headphones are always on, but I can't hear the audio because the
phones are clapped together while the speaker is on.

I switch mics with MENU: MIC SEL, which also sets the high/low gain
selection and mic bias on/off.

The Heil mic cable originally was for a Yaesu plug (I think), but I
diked-off the RJ connector, and installed a round Kenwood-style plug to
match the K3's jack.

I did not install a 1/4" phone jack near the round plug because the foot
switch is plugged into the rear panel, and the GM-5's PTT button works
without it.

Now, why did you ask about PTT devices in parallel?

Re: [Elecraft] Headset for hearing loss

2015-01-06 Thread Barry
If your hearing loss is age-related, try a lower frequency, like 400-500 Hz.
Age-related hearing loss usually is in the 1000-3000 KHz range. If it's
occupational-related, it could be any frequency.

I recall an article in QST a number of years ago by N4GG about building a
small equalizer. As I recall it was a realtively simple project and you can
individually boost various freq bands as needed.

Re: [Elecraft] Headset for hearing loss

2015-01-06 Thread David Cole
Phil,
I had a hearing test done, and asked for the resultant data showing
frequency vs sensitivity...

I selected a spot where my ear was most sensitive in the 400 to 700 Hz
range, and then set the K3 zero beat to that frequency...

CW is a LOT better now! I had placed the zero beat at my worst point
inadvertently... What a difference a few db makes.

Right. K6DGW has severe hearing loss. I advised him to set RXEQ for max
cut of the low bands and max boost of the high bands. He says it's not
perfect, but good enough.

And yes, if your hearing loss is the typical age-related loss of highs,
choose a lower frequency sidetone. 500 Hz is a good starting point,
shift up or down until it works best for you.

[Elecraft] Headset for hearing loss

2015-01-05 Thread Sam Bridges
Hello Guys:
I have a Yamaha CM 500 which does very well. Its main virtue is its
reproduction of my sidetone. But it also reproduces a lot of hash. So I got the
Heil pro set plus. It is great on SSB but often I cannot hear what I am sending
in CW . The sidetone is as high as my K3 will go and Elecraft says 60 is the
limit. Any one have a suggestion or solution I would appreciate it.

[Elecraft] Headset for KX3

I am thinking about going mobile with the KX3, using SSB (for the first
time ever, and only because CW seems impractical while driving.) A
lightweight one-ear one-piece headset seems like a safe way to go. If
anyone has a brand or type they¹d recommend, I would much appreciate
hearing suggestions - on list or off. Many thanks,

[Elecraft] Headset Buddy with Bose QC15 and K3?

2013-12-03 Thread Tad Williamson
I purchased a Headset Buddy for my Bose QC-15 headphones but have been
unable to get them to work with the K3. I purchased an adapter with the
Headset Buddy that splits off into two stereo ouputs. the first problem is
that it reverses the right and left sides of the headphones which is not
too big of a deal.

The main problem is, I can't get the microhone tow work at all. I've
change the bias settings but nothing yet.

Anyone using this set-up that has it working? Any ideas?

Thanks, 73, Tad, WF4W

[Elecraft] Headset for K2 K3

2012-08-10 Thread Stanton A. Bailey
I have a K2 and I'm currently building a K1. I have a KX3 on order (who
doesn't!).
I'm also using a Ten-Tec Orion II but would like a K3 in the near future.

I would like to go with a headset but have heard mixed reviews about the
Heil Pro Set sold by Elecraft.
I had a Pro Set Elite and it was big, hot, uncomfortable and I sold it...
but it had a great mic and loved
the audio while I could stand wearing them. BTW to be fair the Pro Set
Elite was OK until I would switch
from my contacts to glasses. They sat right my your ears and crush my ears
into my eye-glass frames.

So what would you suggest?

[Elecraft] Headset Connection from Heil Proset 4 to KX3

2012-04-30 Thread Terry Domae
Can anyone verify the following?

Headphones: Heil headphones have a 1/4 stereo (200 ohms on the headset)
connected via a straight adapter to 3.5mm stereo jack of KX3 (?? ohms on
KX3)

Mic: 3.5mm mono (HC-4) mic (dynamic?) element - MIC bias set to OFF -
connected to the 3.5mm TRRS tip and sleeve;
PTT connected to 3.5mm TRRS ring 1 and 2. MIC BTN set to PTT UP.DOWN

I have an existing Proset 4 and would like to construct the proper adapter.

Thanks much, Terry KC6ROI

Hello all,

New to this reflector. Waiting for my K3/100 P3 kits to arrive.
I want to use a Yamaha CM-500 boom set with my K3 but think
I should ask if anyone else has experience using this combination.
There must be a connection adapter used between the boom set
and the K3 mic connector, correct? Any recommendations and/or

makes/sells an adapter, anyone using one of these?

I assume you mean the CM-400 ... it is quite popular here and provides
results every bit as good, if not better, than headsets costing three
to four times as much.

There must be a connection adapter used between the boom set
and the K3 mic connector, correct?

The CM-400 works quite well when plugged directly into the rear panel
headphone and mic jacks (if you don't mind leaving it connected all
the time). If you want to be able to disconnect/change headset/mic,
the W2ENY adapter works fine or you can build your own with a $5.00
Foster plug and a female 3.5mm jack (or two, if you want to connect
a hand PTT switch to the front panel) for less than $10.

Re: [Elecraft] Headset/Mic Question

2012-04-09 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Hello, William! Welcome!

The K3 has both front panel and rear panel headphone and microphone
connectors. If you prefer to use the back panel connectors (and find the
CM-500's cable long enough), you can plug the two 3.5mm TRS microphone and
headphone audio directly into the K3's back panel, without any adapters.
Some K3 owner's prefer the clean front panel look that this provides.

I use the K3's PF1 button programmed to toggle SPKR+PH so that I can turn
the speaker audio on and off with a front panel pushbutton press, so I don't
have to reach around and unplug the headphones to listen to the speaker.

If you prefer a front panel connection (which I do sometimes because it adds
a foot or so of headset cord) and it's easier to change headsets (I do this
sometimes in long contests to change the pressure points), you'll need an
adapter that accepts a 3.5mm TRS plug and connects with the 8-pin Foster
microphone connector. You've found one source (thanks!). Another is Heil
Sound's AD-1-K adapter which is sold by several amateur dealers. This is
Heil Sound's Kenwood adapter. There is an picture of a representative
Heil adapter at http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-003264. The
different adapters are color coded; the Kenwood / Elecraft version has a red
body.

The Heil adapter includes a hefty 1/4 jack for a footswitch. I prefer to
bring the footswitch connection to the back panel, that doesn't need to
change when I change headseets. But I'm starting to use VOX more in
contests as the K3's VOX is better than I've been used to in the past.

The Heil replacement service left much to be desired, as just the postage to
get the adaptor to them negated any replacement and they would not consider
just sending a new one to me. I decided to try something new. After a lot of

[Elecraft] Headset recommendation for the K3

2011-07-17 Thread todd brady
Hello to all on the list
I'm a relatively new K3 owner, and this is my first post to the group. I
purchased my K3 back in March ( SN# 5331 ) and just recently purchased the P3 (
SN# 1435 ).
First of all let me say the customer service is hands down the best I've ever
experienced, and the user group has been a wonderful help to me, as I learn the
art of operating my K3 !!
I enjoy both SSB and CW although I don't ragchew using CW, I do chase and
work DX in that mode.
I have tried various headsets with my K3 including the Yamaha, that so many
here on the list recommend.
I have found a new headset that I like better than any I have tried, and I just
wanted to recommend it to the group.
I enjoy both SSB DXing and contesting and this headset is great for all SSB
applications.
It's the Turtle Beach / Ear Force Z1 ... Its a light weight gaming headset
designed for PC's and it's only $29.95 ... I picked it up at Walmart. The sound
of this little headset on both TX RX will surprise you !!
For more info on the headset ... go to my blog at www.n4la.com
Thanks for all the tips everyone, and yes I'm a very satisfied K3 owner !!

Many thanks for posting your find, Todd. Thanks to the size of the
market, there are hundreds of low cost headsets made for use with
computers -- everything from gaming to Skype to listening to music. If
you are able to sell in quantity, it's much easier to get the cost down.
That's why we have the excellent Yamaha headset at such a low price, as
well as the one you found. Someone on the Ten Tec list found a Koss
headset that he liked a lot. Several months ago, I went shopping at
Fry's for low cost headsets to use with Skype. I found a half dozen or
so priced between $10 and $25, and I bought three that looked promising.
All three worked, but none was really comfortable, and one set was
like having my head in a vise. Quite a few years ago, I bought a
Plantronics salesman's sample kit at the Milwaukee hamfest and made
connector adapters to hook them up to my computers and ham gear. All of
them worked, but only one was comfortable enough to use for more than an
occasional phone call.

The beauty of the K3 is that, thanks to its flexibility, it can work
quite well with almost anything that we can plug into it!

Take the bottom three bands in your rig's tx eq and run them down to their
minimum setting.

That alone should get you 90% or more there.

Re: [Elecraft] Headset Settings

2010-09-02 Thread Bill Conkling
Mic to Rear, Low with Bias. Mic gain at 25, comp at 25 for starters. May
need to adjust gain toward 15 if you talk loud.

I really like the CM500.

Don

Take the bottom three bands in your rig's tx eq and run them down to their
minimum setting.

That alone should get you 90% or more there.

I run mine like that and everyone seems to like it.

Okay, all of you bragged on the CM-500 Yamaha headsets so much that I will

started?? I have a bassy voice, and on my PR-40 have to REALLY attenuate
the lows and accentuate highs. I will simply plug them into the rear, as
you have suggested, and go from there.

Yes.

Me too.

Another point about setting levels. The CM500 is a pretty hot mic --
that is, it puts out a lot of voltage -- so you will want to use the
LOW setting for mic gain (in the K3 setup menu).

Once you have done that, AND set the TX EQ as David recommends, THEN
follow the directions in the K3 manual to set audio levels. The
executive summary of that is set Display so that it reads ALC and
compression, use the mic gain to set for a given ALC reading, then set
Compression to get 10dB of compression as indicated on the front panel
meter.

[Elecraft] headset question

2010-02-23 Thread Paul Milward
Hi guys,
I recently ordered a K3 and eagerly await it's delivery. You will likely hear
lots more from me as I attempt to get up to speed with it.

I have been reviewing the archives of this group and see that the Yamaha CM500
is highly regarded. I plan to purchase one very soon.

I have the K3 manual open to page 17 (the pdf from Elecraft website). It looks
like the stero headset plug goes into the jack marked phones', the mic plug
goes into the jack marked mic and a foot switch plug goes into the jack
marked PTT IN

Now for my question. I have a Heil footswitch and plan to use it for PTT. Is
the configuration I described correct? If not, how is headphone/mic and
footswitch connected?

TIA and 73

Re: [Elecraft] headset question

2010-02-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Paul,

You have it right - just plug it in, assuming that the footswitch plug
matches the K3 jack - the headphone/mic connectors will plug right into
the rear K3 jacks. Don't forget to set the Mic to rear and the bias on
for the CM500.

Re: [Elecraft] headset question

2010-02-23 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You have a couple of choices.

If you prefer front panel connections, you'll probably want a Heil Sound
AD-1K adapter or make up an equivalent. The AD-1K adapter has a 8-pin
Foster plug that connects to the K3 front panel microphone connector, and
has a 1/4 phone jack for your footswitch and a 3.5mm jack for your
microphone connector. The Yamaha CM500 headset comes with a 3.5mm stereo
phone plug with a 1/4 adapter sleeve, and you'd use that adapter to plug
into the K3's front panel headset connector.

This is a traditional front panel arrangement. Some prefer this
arrangement because it's easy to pull the headphone plug out to enable the
radio's speakers.

Others prefer the clean front panel arrangement where the headset
connectors are all on the back. You remove the 1/4 sleeve from the Yamaha
CM500 headphone plug and plug the 3.5mm microphone and 3.5mm headphone
connectors into the K3 back panel mic and phone jacks.

There are a couple of versions of Heil footswitch. The current FS-2 has two
wires, one with a 1/4 phone plug and another with an RCA plug. If you have
the FS-2, you might plug its RCA plug directly into the K3's back panel PTT
RCA jack.

If you have the older Heil FS-1 which has just a 1/4 phone plug, you'll
need to replace that plug with an RCA plug, or find or create a small
adapter that has a 1/4 phone jack to an RCA plug. The K3 back panel PTT
jack is an RCA jack.

If you use the clean front panel arrangement, you can enable the radio's
speaker by changing the K3 configuration menu SPKR+PH to enable both the
headphones and speaker at once, and you can set up macro functions to turn
that on and off if you prefer pressing a front panel button. Or you can
reach around and unplug the headphone connector from the back panel.

PTT is also available on the K3 back panel 15-pin accessory connector, so if
you're planning to wire that yourself, you might include a 1/4 phone jack
as part of your plan.

I prefer the clean back panel arrangement, my headphones and radio PTT
actually are connected through a microHAM SO2R control box. I use the Yamaha
CM-500 headset, as well as several Heil products depending on my mood. I
like to change headsets from time to time during contests to change the
pressure points. During a CW contest I'll sometimes use an extreme
isolation headset or a very comfortable old pair of Sony V6 headphones.

I use a Heil footswitch connected as you described. Using connectors on the
back of the K3 sure cuts down on cable clutter. I use a breakout box to go
from the mic plug that normally plugs into the front of the K3 into the
separate PTT in and mic lines. The Line from the footswitch plugs into a
pigtail that is built into the Heil mic cable. Works like a champ.
