I do not own a Microkeyer but I do have several DigiKeyer II's that I  
use for FSK and CW. My MicroHam cables are clearly marked where to  
plug them into a K3/K3S.  I move my transceivers around a number of  
times a year, the markings have made setup quite easy. If you do not  
have MicroHam cables, making and labeling your homebrew cables as  
shown in this schematic should help:

manual will show how to add a P3 to the mix.

pair of serial ports for doing so. No Y cable is necessary (and a bad idea). 

This is how OM Power describes using their product. It works fine. You're 
coming up with a workaround for a nonexistent problem.

I know you know this, but others might not -- RS232 is NOT a matched 
system. It uses a low-Z driver and a high-Z receiver. The real issue 
with loading is CAPACITANCE -- later versions of the RS-232 Standard 
reference cable capacitance and baud rate rather than cable length as 
the limit of transmission distance. CAT5/6/7 cables are among the lowest 
capacitance paired cables we can easily buy, and their loss is fairly 
low at RF. CAT5/6/7 cables are four twisted pairs, each with a different 
twist ratio to minimize crosstalk. RS-232 cables wired to use one of 
these pairs for each of the signalling circuits are about as good as it 
gets without spending big bucks. Most ham gear uses only RXD and TXD 
(pins 2 and 3 on a DB9) with pin 5 as return.


My serial cables use two pairs to connect 2 and 3 with both pairs 
returned pin 5, and with the remaining conductors wired to the DB9 
shells. My cables are pretty short, but I've used cables like this that 
are 200 ft long or longer to connect a computer to sound system DSP to 
do system setups at fairly high baud rates.

Patch the OM Power between P3 and microham box. TCVR goes to P3 and PC goes to 
microham. Then select Elecraft and baud rate from the menu. You should 
immediately see it following frequency on the display. 

OM Power echoes serial commands through and monitors the data. I don't have 
your model, but this is how they all work. 

Any problems you should contact OM Power support. Tibi is very good and will 
respond quickly.

Yaesu FL-7000/Quadra, Elecraft KPA500 (and KPA1500), Ameritron
ALS-600/1300/1306, etc. to transceivers which lack BCD outputs
using microHAM Station Master.

order to have the automatic tuning I have to supply the RTX 
frequency..how can I do it ???


Some say to me...using the CI-V Icom interface of the Microkeyer 
II...but what to set in the amplifier ??


Some say just install a Y cable at the output of RTX rs232

Just to give an idea of my wiring:

K3 rs232 go to P3 DB9 Labelled XCVR

Microkeyer rs232 go to P3 Labelled PC


I am missing some thing ???

Hoping on some help and advice

use the KPAK3AUX Key Line Interrupter to disconnect the Key line in
the KPAAUX cable and route Key Out from the K3 through the Ultrabeam
controller to the PA Key jack on the KPA-500.

You can add as many Y-adapters as needed to the K3 AUX connector.  In some
of my setups, I have as many as four, due to the number of devices connected
to the AUX signals.  Just be sure you get Y-adapters that have all 15 pins
wired through and none shorted to each other.

Hi Guys

If we add the K500 to the line up above of K3+P3+MK11, how does the K500 fit
in please and will I need any additional cables beyond the KPAK3AUX that I
have ordered with the Amplifier? Similarly how does the SteppIR controller
then fit in?

The KPA-500 does not figure in the K3+P3+MKII chain ... As long as
you have the DB15HD Y cable (part of the KPAK3AUX cable set), you
can connect the KPA-500/K3 AUX cable to one leg and the MK II ACC
plug to the other and there will be no issue.

If you use the MK II PA PTT output for amplifier keying, you will want
to include the Elecraft Key Line Interrupter) between the KPA-500/K3
AUX cable and KPA-500 to block the K3 - KPA3 key out signal.

like that and doing updates through the microHAM device. It would seem
prudent to disconnect your microHAM device and directly connect your P3/K3
combination and effect updates in that manner.

An RS-232 A/B switch can make that changeover easy - the common of the 
A/B switch connects to the K3 (or P3) and one side connects to the 
nicroHam while the other side connects directly to a serial port (or USB 
to serial adapter).  A simple flip of the switch changes it from 
normal configuration to Firmware download mode.

I do it that way myself ... each K3 (+P3) has an RS-232 A/B switch on
it.  The computer serial port has an A/B/C/D switch that connects to
each of the A/B switches, the programming cable for the XG3 and for
now the LP-100 (but normally my general purpose test port).

Hi Tom

I'm not sure if you sorted your problem or not but i thought I'd reply as I
have similar setup - K3+P3 +MicroHAM MicrokeyerII+ Heil Proset K2

First I would connect the Proset phones  mic with the PTT Mic lead
(connected to a footswitch or other switch) to the FRONT of the K3, ignoring
the MicroKeyer. If it all works there, then the Proset, foot switch  mic
are all working OK.

Normally I plug my Proset into the back of the Microkeyer using the
Microkeyer short cable supplied  the ptt switch adaptor that came with the
Proset connected to a footswitch as before. I plug the phones into the back
of the K3 which keys the transmitter fine.

Thanks.  I got it working and am using the same set up as you.  My
problem was the phone jack on my push to talk button was not working
if I pushed it too far into the heaset adapter supplied by Heil.

I have this set up and am using the MicroKeyer cable set that has the
mic input on the back of the rig.  I have the Proset plugged into the
RJ45 adapter that plugs into the back of the MicroKeyer and provides
the 8 pin mic connector.  I have the correct Heil  to K3 adapter
cable.  I have a push to talk button that is plugged into the Heil
adapter.  The problem is that when I push the button the radio does
not key.

Other modes (CW, RTTY, etc) key the rig ok.

Any ideas?

Tom,

You have too many devices involved to say whether this is a problem with 
your setup and cables or whether it is a K3 problem.

Do you have anything connected between the Microkeyer and the K3 PTT 
input?  If you are going to get PTT to the K3, you must have something 
connected to the PTT input.

The other modes can use VOX to initiate transmit - my guess is that you 
have VOX set on for CW and RTTY, etc. and not for SSB.  Do you have the 
correct microphone jack (front or rear) selected?

Describe your setup in more detail, we do not have enough information to 
do any more than make guesses.

[Elecraft] K3 and MicroKeyer MKII

I'm trying to connect my K3 to the MicroHam MKII.

I'm struggling already for two weeks now to let the MKII to stop putting my
K3 into TX mode (unwillingly).

When I switch on the K3 and the MKII (both on a different power supply)
nothing goes wrong so far. 

But as soon as the router is started, it starts to put the K3 in pulsed TX
(each +/- 1.5 sec a TX pulse)

If I pull the CAT (DB-9) cable from the K3, it stops. 

I got the idea that there was some relation between TX pulsing and polling
the K3 for info 

 

I did contact MicroHam support, did get prompt answers, but it's still not
solved (yet).

When I delete the device and create a new one (PORTS tab - SET - and select
the K3) the problem is gone.

I did set the communication speed at 4800 Baud as suggested by MicroHam
support.

I have no other application running which generates audio and might
interfere with the MKII (I think..)

 

I'm really puzzled.

I thought I might give it a try here.

Dr Evert,

 

First off all for MK2

Use separate virtual comports in the router for every Item you want to
control.

So no virtual comport sharing. 

Eg cat virtual comport = ptt virtual comport must be avoided.

That can cause strange behaviour in combination with different programs.

 

For the K3

Check your PTT-KEY setting in the K3 advanced menu.

Start with disabling those setting e.g. OFF-OFF

That way you can't trigger PTT or Key via the K3's DB9 connector

You do not need those controls if you use the MK2 anyway

[Elecraft] K3 and microkeyer

Just finished my K3 works great
Interfaced with the microkeyer
which reads the frequency and keys cw fine.
Now I need to configure N1MM to put it all together.
Created ports as follows in Router
2=Radio
3=Ptt
6=foot switch
8=winkey.

Can someone help me get N1MM configurer to
put all this together, right now I am only interested
in keying the radio for CW using the N1MM memories for
contesting
Any help greatly appreciated

[Elecraft] K3 with microkeyer for RTTY

[Ron Spencer]

 Anyone using this combination? What settings for the K3 and microkeyer did
you use? I get the K3 keyed but only a steady, or no tone when transmitting.
