[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Operate -> Memorize

2019-01-29 Thread Andy Durbin
"The tuner will memorize the antenna selection and matching elements every time
it tunes."

Yes, if the tuning solution is the result of an auto tune, then it is
memorized. However if the tuning solution was set manually, then SM; is needed
to memorize that solution for the current frequency.

"SM (Save Memory, SET only)
SET format: SM; or SM f; where f is a frequency in kHz.
SM saves the current tuner settings (antenna, side, inductor, capacitor, and
bypass VSWR) in the tuner memory for the indicated (or most recent transmit)
frequency.
If f is zero or missing, the last Transmit frequency is used. If
transmitting, the measured frequency is used instead of f.
SM; is used by the KAT500 Utility Operate Page Memorize button.
SM with a frequency was introduced in firmware version 1.20."

I make manual settings far more often than using auto tune so I use the SM;
function a lot when configuring for a new or modified antenna.

It's a good idea to save the KAT500 configuration (save to file) quite often
because it's not too difficult to mess up a perfectly good tuner configuration.
E.g. my dummy load and my 160 m OCF are on the same KAT500 antenna port but
switched by a separate coax switch. An accidental auto tune with the dummy
load selected will wipe out a good tuning solution for the antenna.

It would be nice if the user had the option to inspect the auto tuning solution
before it is used to override a saved solution. Maybe that option is available
but I have not found it yet.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Operate -> Memorize

2019-01-28 Thread Dick Dievendorff
See KAT500 Utility help.

ATU settings found by tune are stored without pressing the button. If you
create an atu setting yourself, using the radio buttons for inductors and
capacitors, you can save it with that button.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Operate -> Memorize

2019-01-28 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
The tuner will memorize the antenna selection and matching elements
every time it tunes.

As to the Utility, what ever you change in the Utility will be be sent
to the tuner when Memorize is selected.     Not it is not necessary to
hit Memorize every time the tuner resolves a match.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility for MAC

2018-06-09 Thread John Hiatt
Are you sure you are looking at a current page? On the main software page, it
shows the most recent version # is 1.16.6.14. This does appear to be wrong
anyway, as the 2nd link below shows the current Windows version is 1.16.7.25:

http://www.elecraft.com/software/elecraft_software_page.htm

On the KAT500 page it shows the 1.14.2.1 version for the Mac, which I believe
is what the original poster needs:

http://www.elecraft.com/KAT500/kat500_software.htm

The only reference I can find for 1.13.6.17 for the Mac is on an old archived
page, but of course, the download link is dead:

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Problem (Mac)

2018-03-10 Thread Jack Brindle
This wasn’t a High Sierra issue, but rather the actual preferences file on your
disk that became corrupt. This can happen for several reasons, most likely a
program crash while the preferences file was being written. Our testing shows
no issues so far with the programs and High Sierra, but as W4SMT will attest,
we are continuously testing to make sure all our utilities work just fine.

Enjoy your KPA500, and if you have any questions, just ask!

Hi Jack,
I did get it working with David, W4SMT's suggestions. It is interesting
that you got the “initializing” pane with a dialog behind it indicating
that a setting is incorrect. Mine just showed the "initializing" pane,
but there was no other way to get rid of it. I wonder if it is an
incompatibility with High Sierra or some other issue. I shouldn't have to
Force Quit to get out of the program. Hopefully Elecraft might take a look
at the programming and compatibility with Mac High Sierra. I'm happy to say
I'm up and running with the KAT500, and tomorrow I'll throw the big switch
to get the KPA500 running. Thanks so much for checking in!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Problem (Mac)

2018-03-10 Thread John Woodard
Hi Ray,
Thanks for your suggestions! I have been lucky for 9 years with my 2009
iMac, but this year was the year to upgrade. It does look like the KAT500
Utility could use a bit of updating, and it is very weird that it got stuck
looking for a USB-serial driver and couldn't be restarted or interrupted.
Hopefully, Elecraft might take a look at this issue, in case it happens
again. Many thanks again for your help!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Problem (Mac)

2018-03-10 Thread John Woodard
Hi David,
Thank you so much for your suggestion, which worked. I think it kept
looking for a USB-Serial interface that it wasn't finding. Strange that it
got stuck looking, but that DL2RUM's KAT500ui worked fine. Anyway, very
grateful for your recommendation!

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Problem (Mac)

2018-03-10 Thread John Woodard
I'm a proud new owner of a KAT500 and KPA500 and trying to get them set up.
I am following the 5 page Set Up and Configuration guide from Elecraft, and
after getting the cables connected, I tried running the KAT500 Utility.
Unfortunately, the program seems to hang, as I see a window that says
Initializing..., but nothing further happens. I have to Force Quit the
program to move along.

I've tried relocating the USB connector to different ports, but still no
joy. The computer does seem to be able to talk to the KAT500 if I use Tom
Lindner's DL2RUM KAT500UI software. So, I'm guessing there is something
with the KAT500 Utility that is not working on my computer.

My computer is a brand new iMac 27" 2017 running High Sierra macOS 10.13.3.
I'll be grateful for any tips or suggestions.

But you do need to pause on a frequency for them to click (they don't switch

Hi gang,

I hope this is a minor problem, but I cannot seem to solve it.  I have a
K3 running 5.53 firmware, and a recently acquired KAT500. They are
connected as in Figure 2 of the KAT500 manual, using the KPAK3AUX cable
with the key line interrupter, and a separate key line to activate my
AL-80A amplifier.  Everything seems to work "just as per" with the
exception of the frequency tracking function on receive.  This was
running at one time; I did a tune every time the K3 crossed a frequency
boundary, and it seemed to track thereafter.  Now it won't track - no
relay noise from one end of the band to the other.  It seems to remember
specific settings, and will re-tune on transmit, but does not re-tune on
VFO movement.  (No split freq, either.)  There is no KAT3 in the K3, so
CONFIG:KAT3 indicates "not inSt", but tap 1 toggles getween KAT500N and
KAT500Y, and was left in the latter position.

This is no big deal, but it would be handy if the KAT500 would return on
receive to the last settings for that frequency, rather than wait for a
transmit pulse.  Besides, it is supposed to do just that!

Any thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Question?

2016-12-23 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Hi, Paul!

It's on the Configuration tab of the KAT500 Utility.
Choose "Edit Configuration", "Antennas".
You want different antenna choices for individual bands, so choose each band
in turn, and check the appropriate "Enabled" check boxes.

The "preferred" antenna is the one you want selected when you change to that
band from another. For example, you might want your dipole enabled on
40-10, but not often use it. You could enable the dipole (ant2 for you) on
some of the HF bands, but choose "ANT1" as the preferred antenna for 40-6.
Then you could listen on the dipole with a switch press, but if you switch
away from that band and return, you'd start out with the DB36 each time.

This is described in KAT500 Utility Help, Choose "configuration" or "antenna
enable" from the Index.

[Elecraft] KAT500 utility works -- then doesn't

2016-02-09 Thread John Shadle
Hi all,
After finishing up my K3S build with only one incident (the 400Hz filters
mysteriously not working in the new rig -- they are now at Elecraft for
testing, FYI), I am reconnecting my K3S and the rest of my station.
Finally, I got motivated to finally get my KAT500 connected to my computer!

I installed the latest version of the utility and all was good. I was able
to view the SWR and FWD/REF power as the unit trained itself (after
clearing the memories, first). Then, without warning, the utility stopped
recognizing the KAT500. The COM port is still there and it hasn't changed,
but the KAT500 is no longer found. Many options are now grayed out.

I've tried changing the COM port assignment for the KXUSB adapter, but that
does nothing. I tried removing then reinstalling the adapter, which also
results in no change.

Any ideas what is going on? Could RF have somehow gotten into the
controller in the KAT500 to make it not respond to the KXUSB polling?

The KAT500 still tunes as usual, but I'm just not able to access the unit
at all via the computer interface.

Thanks for your help.

[Elecraft] KAT500 - Utility not working - FINAL REPORT

2015-10-26 Thread Bill Wiehe via Elecraft
Some may recall I had a issue with my KAT500 not connecting to the computer
therefore not allowing me to use the KAT Utility. After checking com ports and
ever purchasing a new KXUSB cable from Elecraft, I sent the unit off to the
mother ship for a look-see.  Turns out we lost transistors Q1 and Q2. They were
replaced and all is well once again.
I do not know how or why they were "blown" but we happy all is once again
working. Thanks to the Elecraft Team and Service Tech Cory for the quick turn
around.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Not Working - Not Resolved

2015-09-25 Thread Byron Peebles

I've gone through a bit of this under Windows 10.

Open DEVICE MANAGER and the PORTS device listing. This is in
Settings->System->About->Device Manager.

Connect your cable to the KAT500. You should hear a beep and see the
device appear. That is the COM.

The ports are 38400 and the COM might come up a 9600, so you change the
settings to 38400.

If you computer confuses the KPA and KAT and you KNOW they are
different, I'd suggest you add a good quality USB powered hub and
connect through it. I have a pretty good computer and I've had to
attach eight external powered USB3 Hub ports to it for stability.

After some help hints from Dick (K6KR), Gary and the on-line trouble shoot

[Elecraft] KAT500 - Utility not working

2015-09-18 Thread Bill Wiehe via Elecraft
I discover a problem with my KAT500 in that the Utility shows that no Software
is loaded. It still received signals from the computer as I can control it from
HRD but I cannot make changes via the Utility. The cable Interface Cable shows
only "flashing red" light. To this point I have confirmed the computer com
ports are functioning properly. The cables are all attached. I have changed the
cable input point to confirm it is not the computer port that is the problem. I
even tried to reload  my previously saved configuration to no avail. The
Utility screen continues to say that no software is loaded. And yes I reloaded
the Utility program on the computer. Any help or insight would be appreciated
as I have never had a problem to this point. Thank you in advance.Bill - W0BBI

Bill,
Check baud rate. Could be you are not connected to the kat500 hence no fw
upload to your PC.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

2015-08-24 Thread Warren Merkel
Brian,

I had this happen to me one time.I believe it was trying to find the
KAT500 on a port that was no longer the correct COM port. A device was
there but it wasn't the KAT500.Try unplugging all other USB devices
that you can, leaving only the KAT500 connected, and start the
application again. (Kill the task in the process list if you see it's
already there) If no joy, try disabling any COM port sharing software
you might be using as well.

I just tried to find where the KAT500 utility stores config info and
interestingly didn't find a thing in what looks to be the right place
( %appdata%\Elecraft\KAT500 Configuration) The folder is empty!
Was hoping it was just a config file that we could look at.

Might I suggest you look in the Control Panel Device Manager, and
determine which port is being assigned to the KAT500. It should be
listed under Ports and LPT It shows up as USB Serial Port (COMx)
Where x is a number. Make mental note of what the COMx is in your
case. That at least means that the KAT500 is being recognized by the
computer and is assigned a COM port. If this port assignment doesn't
make sense from what you expect or what it was using previously,
possibly the Utility is hung while trying to use different port than
what it is being assigned to the KAT500 now-- and not doing a good job
of telling you it's having an issue.

Have you tried uninstalling the Utility completely and then reinstall
it? Hopefully the uninstaller will remove the incorrect configuration
information on the way out. The developer needs to chime in on where
that is kept.

Hi to the group.

I have not wanted to get into this discussion but I have had a similar problem
with other programs and will throw this out just in case it is your problem. If
you have a second monitor and display that program on the second monitor the
program will not show up on the main monitor even if the second monitor is
missing. I had to put my second monitor back on and move the program back to
see it. This happens on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 so you might give that a try.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

2015-08-23 Thread Ken K6MR
This is a tough one given that everyone else is likely running without issue.

The common/obvious question: did you install as Administrator and are you
running the utility as Administrator? Depending on resource requests from the
program this can be a problem. Is the user you are running as an Administrator?
If not, right click on the setup file and select “Run as Administrator”. Do the
same when running the Utility.

I just downloaded the latest utility and installed/ran without issue. This is
Win10 x64, but I also run it on W7.

To Anyone!

Issue: KAT500 Utility will not run

Version: 1.14.4.10

Windows: 7 Pro 64 bit

Observations:

1)  It appears to correctly install

2)  When one attempts to start the utility, it shows in the Task Manager
as a process (KAT500Utility.exe *32)

3)  The application window does not show on the screen.

4)  The application is not listed in the Task Manager under
Applications.

5)  If one attempts to start the utility again, the application window
will show on the screen and a second process will show in the Task Manager
processes.

6)  The application then goes into a Not Responding state.

Any ideas are welcome.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Question: Idle Sleep

2015-06-09 Thread James Bennett
I've got a K3/KAT500/KPA500 system, along with a KX3.

In the past I was able to power on the KAT500 whenever I wanted, irregardless
of the power being on or off for the K3. This was useful for the occasional
times I wanted to have the KX3 drive the KPA500 and the KAT500. A week or so
ago I made some changes to my main antenna system and wanted to re-train the
KAT500. So, I brought up the KAT500 Utility (v1.14.2.1 - Mac OS X) and cleared
it's memories. While I had the utility up I was looking at a couple other
things, as it had been a while since I'd been in this program. I noticed that
in the Configuration there is a tab called Idle Sleep. This had been
unchecked, but after reading what the text said, I thought it would be good to
have it turned on. Well, it appears that this has had the unwanted effect of my
not being able to turn on the KAT500 unless the K3 is powered on first. Is this
normal? I thought that the KAT500 needed to be powered on BEFORE the K3???

As a side note, that Idle Sleep page says See Help and the KAT500 Serial
Command Reference for more detail. Well, I opened up the Help and found very
little regarding this option - pretty much a repeat of what is in the utility
itself.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility 1.14.4.10 beta test version available on our FTP site

2014-04-11 Thread Stan Gibbs, KR7C
Yes, I was typing the commands on the Command Tester tab.

I notice from my P3's 28.004 oscillator signal that the oscillator is
enabled immediately when the Firmware or Operate tabs are selected.
However, the oscillator runs continuously while the Operate tab is selected
and turns off after a delay in the case of the Firmware tab. Is there a
reason for this difference? Sending firmware to the KAT500 with idle sleep
enabled seems to work reliably now, even waiting for the oscillator to
time-out first.

The Configuration and Command Tester tabs don't enable the oscillator until
the user either clicks a configuration button or sends a macro command. In
both cases the oscillator stops after a few seconds of idleness, like the
Firmware tab.

Why not simply enable the oscillator (disable the sleep) after the utility
has established communications with the KAT500 on startup, and restore the
user's Idle Sleep setting on exit? If users are fiddling with their KAT500
configuration, it doesn't seem like they should be that concerned about the
28.004 signal being present. If they are using the Operate tab to monitor
station operation, then the oscillator signal will be present regardless of
the Idle Sleep setting.

However, this begs the question of other apps accessing the KAT500. IMHO,
requiring all of them to send junk commands until they get a reasonable
response does not seem like a very reliable strategy.

Is there a hardware mod that could be made that would shift the oscillator
out of the 10m band? That would eliminate the problem altogether, allow the
firmware to be simplified and greatly improve the communications
reliability.

Hi
I second the hardware mod.  For programs such as Win4k3suite which poll the Kat
keeping the sleep mode on introduces unacceptable delays. So instruct people to
turn sleep mode off.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility 1.14.4.10 beta test version available on our FTP site

2014-04-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
We have placed a new beta KAT500 Utility (Windows version) on our FTP site.

When the KAT500 has been configured for sleep when idle, configuration
changes were difficult. The new version wakes up the sleeping
microcontroller more reliably.

Additionally, the Erase Antenna Tuner Memory function has been moved from a
tab on the Edit Configuration property page to a dialog invoked directly
from a button on the Configuration page.

ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/tmp/KAT500/KAT500Utility/KAT500_Utility_Setup_1_14_4_
10.exe

You may need to refresh your browser's cache; the file was added just this
morning.

I would expect to see the correct response after the first an; command, as
happens when the idle sleep is disabled.

Are you entering these commands from the command tester? It takes almost 50
msec to wake up the microcontroller and several serial characters will arrive
and are lost in that time. If you are entering commands from the command
tester, it's better to turn off idle sleep. I have a command macro button set
up with SL0;SL; to accomplish this.

The operate page works OK, right?

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility wakeup KAT500

2014-02-25 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KAT500 Utility does need a little work to wake up a sleeping KAT500.

I'll try to get to it this week.

In the meantime, I'm using a command tester macro named IDLE SLEEP OFF
that sends ;;;SL0;SL;RV; I tap that macro key a few times until I see an
SL0; . This turns off idle sleep so you can load firmware and make
configuration changes that stick. You can restore Idle sleep on with an
SL1; command or use the Edit Configuration dialog.

Alternatively, click Test Communications on the port tab and get back to
the firmware tab within 5 seconds and press Send All Firmware.

Apparently, the KAT500 Utility (v1.14.2.20) doesn't send the requisite wake
up commands.

As far as the coarse tuning speed, I would say that it is much faster than
1.58. I erased all memories and tried tuning antennas where the SWR is over
5 (e.g. 18 on my 80 dipole) and the KAT500 was really quick in finding a
good match.

[Elecraft] KAT500 utility feature request

2014-01-10 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

I am not sure if the utility is actively being worked on as part of the
project to eliminate spurious unwanted tuneups, but if it is, I have the
following request:

When using the utility to change antenna on my (remotely located) KAT500,
the L/C display settings are faithfully updated to the last used values for
that antenna (and of course they are switched in at the tuner also). This is
excellent. But the utility does not display the VSWR that was measured last
time using those settings. An added bonus would be if the bypass VSWR for
that antenna could be displayed as well, but this isn't as important and I
am aware that the tuner may not always know this value.

How do you access the KAT500 Utility? I do not see a COM port that
is connected to the KAT500. If I have the K3, the P3, the KPA500 and the
KAT500 all connected together with the proper cabling and everything is working
fine, where does the KAT500 Utility get its COM port? I have tried connecting
the PC data cable up, but no COM shows that the Utility recognizes. What’s the
secret here? I’m missing something and there are no directions in the manual
that helps.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

2013-06-05 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KAT500 Utility is a Host PC program. The KAT500 has a serial (COMM) port
connector on its back panel that uses a 3.5mm TRS connector, similar to the
KX3, XG3, W1, and W2. Elecraft supplies a KXUSB USB to Serial Adapter that has
a USB connector on the Host PC end and a 3.5 mm TRS plug on the KAT500 end.
You may also use a KXSER cable, which has a 9-pin D-shell connector on one end
and a 3.5mm TRS plug on the other.

I use a four-port USB to Serial Adapter and a couple of KXSER cables. I
connect these four ports to a K3/P3, a KPA500, a KAT500 (with a KXSER cable)
and to a KX3 or XG3 (also with a KXSER cable).

If you plug one end of the KXUSB into the back panel of the KAT500 (the PC
DATA port) and the USB end into your PC, Windows should install a device
driver for that USB cable and provide a COM port address for it. If you're not
sure which COM port it is, see the KAT500 Utility Help text on Troubleshooting
- Finding the right serial port. The KXUSB uses an FTDI chip set, and its COM
port should appear and disappear from the Device Manager list of COM ports as
you insert and remove the USB connector from the PC.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Problem Solved

2013-06-05 Thread K8RS
Group,
Solved the problem accessing the KAT500 Utility. A little thought
and I tried my last remaining USB-to-Serial Port adapter. Plugged it into the
PC Data cable and configured it for COM 5. And away we went.

[Elecraft] KAT500 utility software request

2013-06-05 Thread goldtr8

Dear Elecraft,

I would like to request a simple software enchancement to the KAT500
utility software.

Is it possible to allow in the future releases the ability to to size
the window by dragging the window to a larger or smaller footprint on
the screen.

I like to use the utility for changing antennas but it wants to cover
the programs I am using. If I could shrink it more it would be more
screen friendly.

Thank you for considering my request.

Cheers
Don

I'll do what I can to make the pages resizable. The minimum size is constrained
by the operate pages controls, so smaller than the current minimum may not be
feasible. It also has to be reasonable at several settings of display expansion
preferences.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 utility software request

2013-06-05 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

Not sure what your problem is. The utility behaves just like any other
Windows program. It can be moved around and resized as you wish. There is a
minimum size for its window but unless your screen is really tiny that
should not be a problem. I don't think there is anything the program
developer can do to help you.
