Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 problem -- maybe

2021-11-20 Thread Clark Macaulay
I had a similar failure several years ago. Don helped me troubleshoot that
little board and the problem turned out to be a few diodes that got blown
due to a lightning strike. I was glad it took out the diodes and not the
K2.

I do not use a KUSB converter with the K2 as I have 'real' RS232 ports in
the shack computer. Since that time, though, I have used a wireless link
between the internet box (also taken out by lightning) and my shack
computer. This removes one path for any future strikes to come through and
blow up my modest shack.

GL on fixing your problem, Dave. It's worth the time.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 problem -- maybe

2021-11-19 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

Being a little 'tongue in cheek' the answer is -- That depends on what
you mean by "good"!
Seriously, the fact that you can turn it on and off in the menu only
means that there is a response from the KIO2 when it is communicating
with the MCU over the AUXBUS line.
I would suspect the MAX1406 IC, but since there was a lightning strike,
it could be something different - anything!

First do all the voltage measurements on the KIO2 board.
Does anything get hot?  The voltage regulator in particular.
Are you using the "special cable" between the KIO2 and the KUSB cable?
You MUST use that!  It does not have to be long, but must be present.

Check that all the inductors show continuity.

If none of that is revealing, I can give you a series of tests that you
can do to test the KIO2 alone (without removing it).
If we get to that point, take it off-list (Delete "[Elecraft]" from the
subject line) and I can give you the steps via private email.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 problem -- maybe

2021-11-19 Thread David Gilbert

I agree.  I had a strike zap the KIO3 in my K3 because even though all
my other gear was unplugged at the time, my laptop (which interfaces to
my K3) wasn't.   at first thought it was the KUSB.  I bought a second
one figuring it wouldn't hurt to have a spare if the cable turned out to
not be the problem ... which it wasn't.

I checked with Elecraft tech support via email to see if individual KIO3
boards were available, or if mine could be repaired.  They didn't answer
either of those questions and the sole brief answer was "you should just
buy the new USB version".  Which cost about $400, of course.

Don, W3FPR, ended up selling me a set of the three boards he had
replaced for somebody upgrading to the newer boards.  One of those was
even bad, but luckily not the serial one I needed.  Swapping out the
serial board by itself fixed the problem.

This sounds to me like the classic bad solder connection: sometimes it
works perfectly and sometimes it doesn't work at all. If you can tune
in the oscillator when the interface isn't working, you might
concentrate your inspection from J1 to U1 and J2. Also, your tests
indicate the K2 can send data, but is not receiving it. That narrows
your search even more. Look at the schematic. Follow the signal from
J1(pin 3) to U1(pins 6 and 11) and finally to J2(pin 3). But the board

RS232 cable, just to make sure.

Hope this helped.

When something is intermittent like you describe, first suspect that elusive
unsoldered connection.

If it works from the K2 panel, but does not work with control through the
computer interface, check the components shown on sheet 2 of the KPA100
schematic in the lower left corner labeled RS232 Interface first, then
check the K2 Control Board P4 pins 1 and 3 and Pins 25 and 26 of U1. It
sounds like the TXD path is working, but the RXD path is not, but check them
both.

[Elecraft] KIO2 problem

2005-09-19 Thread Sanger, Joseph
In final stages of building KIO2 interface Am doing Serial
Interface Test Using HyperTeminal, I am indeed able to issue the
suggested command, SH01; which causes a band increment. However,
communication in the opposite direction is nonexistent; that is,
following the procedure on page 14 to issue the Test Message from the K2
causes no response on Hyperterminal.

Any suggestions are, of course, deeply appreciated and welcome.

If you're connecting to your computer via a serial-to-USB adapter, I've
found from comments I've read around the Web that there is a wide range of
performance of these devices, from inoperative to just fine.

I went to BestBuy and bought whatever the only brand was they had on the
shelf and it was kinda like what you're seeing -- responses from the radio
were garbled, truncated, or non-existent. I took that one back and stole one
from another piece of equipment I had that wasn't using it and now it works
fine. There's no brand name on it, but the part number is GUC232A.

This may or may not be your problem but I just wanted to toss it out just in
case.

However, I am going straight in to a serial port on a Dell Latitude D400
