I’ve noticed a similar issue when engaging and disengaging the APF filter. I have to go back and turn off and on the NR before it kicks in again. Thanks Julie. It's a bit my fault. I've choosed a new thread since it's a new question. So I should have mentioned the K4 again. I think my question/observation should be clear now. [Elecraft] NR after changing bands
Hi again (and thanks for the "R"/"DR" explanation). Here is an observation with the noice reduction NR. The bands are quite noisy here. So I use NR ADJUST set to 4 or 5. - When I last used the 40m band, mode was LSB, bandwidth was 2.8 kHz, and NR was ON. - Switch from some other band back to 40m. - Disable NR and immediatly re-enable it again. - For me it seems that the noise levels (the audio) before disabling NR and after re-enabling it are (quite a bit) different. But they shouldn't. The test with the 40m band is just an example. I (think I) observe this on other bands as well. Am I crazy or is this real? Vic, The NR algorithm always works better with a wider bandwidth. It is simply building a not-too-narrow filter around what it perceives to be the signal. [Elecraft] NR
I’ve never found the K3 NR very useful. But this morning, I was trying to hear VP8PJ on CW through a humongous wideband radar (or something) signal that was running over S9. The IF NB didn’t do anything against it, and the DSP NB just helped a little. I found that opening up the bandwidth to about 2.2 kHz and setting the NR to F1-3 knocked the radar down enough that I could copy him! Unfortunately, it didn’t make him able to hear me over the loud US pileup, but I was surprised that the NR was so effective in this situation. [Elecraft] NR of my dreams
When the new firmware 4.51 came out there were some postings commenting on the improvement in the NR. However, I didn't really pay attention. The previous versions of NR had proven to be of little use with the particular kind of noises that plague my QTH, so I hadn't even turned on NR for months. I am almost entirely a CW op and have had no occasion to try the NR on SSB until tonight. The D64 station has been on CW, easy enough to work, but tonight he is on 17 meter phone. I tuned to his frequency and I could tell that he was talking, but he was buried in atmospheric noises. NB did little good, and I was about to give up and go watch the Olympics when I thought to try NR. Magic! Using the same settings I had left over from the previous firmware version (5--1) the noise just disappeared, and the op's voice came loud and clear in my phones. Big improvement. This promises to be a boon to my operations. Thanks very very much to all who worked on this! You have to set the subRX NR and NB after using the bSET hold button. Re: [Elecraft] NR Use in contacting 9N7MD
Hi, NR or no NR, this is going to be one tough nut to crack. I listened for him for the first time this morning and did not hear a peep. This wasn't with my K3 but remotely from work using my humble IC718 online radio, but there was no QRM and the 718 is plenty sensitive so the G5RV antenna clearly had no reception of him here in CNY. I have heard him at dusk but only in the noise with a significant amount of arctic flutter. Even considering that, his audio was not particularly good but rather muffled with a lack of highs. The dusk opening has the advantage that we don't have to compete with the Europeans. AB2TC - Knut It was using SSB on 17M. Although I operate mostly SSB, my few CW contacts are to work a DXpedition, where I can usually hear the station with little or no interference and the NR is not needed. [Elecraft] NR Use in contacting 9N7MD
Yesterday morning was my first real rigorous test for the NR and all its capability. If not for it, I would never had understood my call if they returned to me. Fortunately, since they were going thru the US by the numbers, I had time to fiddle with the various NR levels. Previous to today, the F5-1 was plenty adequate for most contacts. However, last night, before their signal started to improve, it was a savior. The F5-1 setting was only adequate but not the cure. As I explored the other options, I found how, with careful settings of the volume, BW Cuts and NR, you can make a signal intelligent when there seems to be no other way. I settled on using F7-2 (never been there before) as the best compromise and at least could tell there was a human being speaking and I actually understood him! Like an earlier poster, Tim, said, it sure would be nice to have the NR, .adjust like this: 1-2, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, etc.” I second that motion after last night. It seems like I usually use the first or second levels. All in all, I am pleased, especially since I am in the log now for 9N7MD on CW and SSB! I am happy! Re: [Elecraft] NR Use in contacting 9N7MD
Roger, You do not say whether you were operating SSB or CW when you made use of the NR. Which mode was it? There have been good treatments of the NR system and its application previously on this reflector but they are not so detailed in the manual where this information is most needed. I believe this is a good bit of the problem which users have with the NR. I have little experience with NR as my location is quiet though it could be on 160M; that I am missing the boat. The K3 has so many features that even after using it for nearly three years there is more to learn. I am not complaining about this great versatility and I believe the K3 is still a better rig for a beginner than many simpler radios, given that it can be afforded and then it is modular so affordability is greatly eased. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of W5RDW Sent: 16 November 2011 16:36 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] NR Use in contacting 9N7MD Yesterday morning was my first real rigorous test for the NR and all its capability. Re: [Elecraft] NR algorhythm
I had suggested that the VFO-A knob might be put to use while NR ADJ was selected. It could step through the NR settings in the following sequence: 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, etc. This would neatly complement the action of the VFO-B knob which has this sequence: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc. As it is now the VFO-A knob has no function while NR ADJ is on. NR settings are per-mode, but they'll be the same for a given mode on each receiver. I.e., you can't (at present) have different NR settings for CW on main vs. CW on sub. Don, From the new firmware release notes: Other new features and improvements: * NR (NOISE REDUCTION) ON/OFF: This is now saved on a per-band/per-receiver basis (same as NB). NR ADJ (noise reduction setting) is stored independently for each mode. [Elecraft] NR Revisited (trying again in plain text mode)
Over the past two months I've been enjoying weak signal low band DXing on good antennas with my K3 using roofing filters for CW (500Hz) and SSB (2.1 KHz) . My K3 has the latest DSP board and the firmware is up to date with the thirty-two(?) NR choices. What I'm finding is that the NR Firmware likes to see a wide bandwidth from which the weakest signals can be dug out of the in the noise on SSB or CW. If I narrow up the bandwidth with the optional filters I can't copy the signals as well. i.e. with NR enabled together a 2.1 or 500 Hz filter. I hear best with NR together with the 2.7 KHz filter. Interesting! This means that QRM must be considered as a secondary matter within the bandpass if the NR feature is to work at its best for me. I find different NR settings depending on band conditions and the ultimate setting varies with incoming signals. I've been working lots of JAs on 80 meters where the NR truly helps. The narrow CW/SSB filters are great but I don't use NR with them. Weak signal reception comes down to using the narrow roofing filters without NR. OR, just the 2.7 KHz wide filter with NR enabled. Yes, over and over, the 2.7 KHz bandwidth together with NR brings them out from the depths of ESP level to readable signals. So, why have the optional filters? I use them to get signals so I can copy them through QRM when the band is busy. . Happy Holidays 73, John, W1QS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] NR Revisited (trying again in plain text mode)
The DSP is behind the roofing filters. I set my 400 Hz filter to cut in at 450 Hz width. If I set width to 500, the K3 uses the 1.8 kHz roofing filter. The information diversity of the noise vs CW signal as a ratio is much larger there and the algorithm seems to take advantage of that. To my ears there is a lot more bite by the NR when the roofing is wide. This wide roofing won't do for contests, but it's quite nice for listening and regular QSO's. In your case I would compare NR with width at 550 and 500 for CW in uncrowded non-contest situations. That should tell you a lot. In any event, at some level of signal going down past merely weak, NR no longer digs into the noise and IMHO begins to obfuscate the signal. At this point only narrowing bandwidth helps. I never use the NR in contests for this reason. NR seems to kill about a couple dB range where I can dig it out with the dB between the ears if the NR is off. In a contest, those are the very contacts that if made will put distance between one and the competition. And lest anyone think that a dig on the K3, I have exactly the same observation/experience on the Orions. 73, Guy On Tue, Dec 29, 2009 at 12:53 PM, John Lawrence j...@hughes.net wrote: Over the past two months I've been enjoying weak signal low band DXing on good antennas with my K3 using roofing filters for CW (500Hz) and SSB (2.1 KHz) . Yes, over and over, the 2.7 KHz bandwidth together with NR brings them out from the depths of ESP level to readable signals. So, why have the optional filters? I use them to get signals so I can copy them through QRM when the band is busy. . Re: [Elecraft] NR Revisited (trying again in plain text mode)
Hi John, Exactly so. Lyle Johnson explained how NR works in the K3 a while ago and he said exactly what you've observed: NR works best with wider bandwidths. [Elecraft] NR Revisited (trying again in plain text mode)
I've been pleasantly surprised at how well NR works even with very narrow CW bandwidths. I routinely use a 250 Hz roofing filter followed by 250, 200, or 150 Hz DSP filters for Top Band. The NR set around F1-2 or F1-3 quite often makes a difference for me. It wasn't always this way. Re: [Elecraft] NR problem with the latest beta release
Jim: I can get rid of the tone upon turning on NR if I do any of the following: revert to v3.30 turn off switch tones use my FL2 filter (500 Hz) rather than my FL1 filter (2.7 kHz) and, of course, turning off NR Wayne had me try an EE init, which got rid of the tone, but it returned after a while. It seems to require a very specific filter or hardware setup, a specfic set of config options, and possibly some time pushing buttons. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem, because that means it is not a hardware problem with my K3, and I'm not going crazy! I have faith that Wayne and Lyle will solve this, though. [Elecraft] NR and PF1 key noise
Here's another bug that now occurs with v 3.41 and I didn't notice this before updating. I assigned the programmable function button PF1 to switch the configuration menu item SPKR+PH, now if I have NR on and I try to switch the external speaker on and off by holding the PF1 button I get a tone that is medium low loudness around .7-1 KHZ. On some NR settings like 1-1 to 2-4 the tone occurs anytime I switch the speaker on or off and 3-1 and above it only seems to occur when switching the speaker on. This doesn't happen when I switch the speaker from the config menu only when switching using the PF1 button. Pushing other buttons makes it stop. Almost sounds related to the 3.41 incomplete fix thread. Not a big deal but needs to be fixed. Re: [Elecraft] NR settings at AD4C K3 now available at my website
every case, SSB was harder to understand (muffled) with the NR on and in spite of the noise, much easier to understand with NR off. CW sounded great with NR on. My opinion. Steve N4LQ ~~ of my K3 receiver with all the settings I do use, also you will find a word with the explanation of all the settings and finally there are six AD4C I had replaced the newer 3.27 with the older 3.25 as the SSB NR didn't please me as much. But after examining your .doc file with settings I tried the 3.27 once again using the AGC settings in the .doc file. After changing a few settings the SSB was very nice and CW also seems to work fine. Here is what I did: First my RX equalization is: #1=0, #2=1, #3=1, #4=-1, #5=-3, #6=0, #7=0, #8=0 AGC HLD=0.15, AGC PLS=nor, AGC SLP=05, AGC THR=5, AGC-S=20 The setting changed from the .doc file was AGC SLP=05, from your 00, which didn't surpress enough some of the huge static crashes we were having. Then I found the SSB setting most effective to me was F4-1 and F4-2. They didn't exhibit the hollow/echo sound of F1- or F2- settings which I felt reduced the clarity of the SSB in noisy conditions. I use AFX a lot, but the same experience with it on or off. I am cw about 80% of time so experimented with it and had very pleasant results also. But following suggestions of more experienced users on this email group, I've found that AGC off and using AF about 50% and then using RF to control signal volume/intensity works much better in noisy conditions for me. The essence, then, is to try F4-1 and F4-2 with the new 3.27 to see how it may work for you if you use SSB mode. I'm continuing to experiment with different settings in various conditions as the type of noise effects what needs to be done to surpress it but enhance the signal. ...Edwin Once you have flown, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, there you long to return.-da Vinci http://bellsouthpwp2.net/e/d/edwinljohnson __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] NR settings at AD4C K3 now available at my website
David, Thanks for your input on this. I understood pretty much correctly, but appreciate your more complete explanation. By WAV, yes, I meant linear-coded whatever resolution. I think windoze Sound Recorder records files in this format. They're huge... As a function of my group's charter (at work), we sometimes run distortion analyses on MP3 vs WAV files for plain voice phrasing. They're used in turn-by-turn directions on vehicle navigation units. We'll run the WAV file on the X (ref) axis, and the MP3 on the y axis and snapshot different parts of the phrases with the display on short-term average. We've found differences of up to 10% distortion, though whether it sounds that way to a human ear I have no idea. I suppose it depends on the recording format of the MP3 (resolution again). A 12-bit sample looks the worst - easily naked eye visible. In practice, we use 16-bit sampling at 16 KHz for all non-Text To Speech pronuciations. This seems to work best and whatever distortion there is can't be heard by anyone I've tested. I was only questioning whether or not this would be a valid comparison, and it sounds like MP3 is probably OK for plain voice. Thanks for that answer. 73, matt W6NIA On Sun, 30 Aug 2009 19:30:14 +0100, you wrote: Matt Zilmer wrote: Does anyone have more input on MP3 vs WAV? Re: [Elecraft] NR settings at AD4C K3 now available at my website
I'm still evaluating the NR settings here. On strong SSB signals, it sounds OK to me, but seems to limit or compress weaker voice signals. I've been pleased with the improvement to CW signals, though the settings available don't seem to change output characteristics much on a strong CW signal. Probably no surprise. Intelligibility is much better on F1-1 with weaker CW signals. MP3 files aren't necessarily the best way to hear voice. The masking (or compression) is pretty good for rock music, but tends to cut out a lone voice. Or classical music, which gets cut down a lot in terms of the dynamics. MP3 probably works well for CW though. For voice comparisons I've done / seen in the past, WAV files work ok. Does anyone have more input on MP3 vs WAV? 73, matt W6NIA K3 # 24 On Sat, 29 Aug 2009 10:36:15 -0600, you wrote: Ditto that. The CW performance sounds awesome. SSB... Better with it turned off. Re: [Elecraft] NR for Dummys
I'm still playing with the 3.27 NR, but I like it alot. I operate CW only and have been using the F1-x filter section mostly because it seems that F2 through F4 are minor variations on the F1 theme, so to speak; but I will try them later. With CW signals of course there is not as much subtlety involved as SSB-- you mostly either hear them or you don't. So for SSB maybe there is a bigger difference between F1-x and F4-x. In general... I haven't found any signals yet that the NR loses when it is turned on, so that is good. True, I also haven't heard any unreadable signals that the NR makes readable, but I am probably pretty good at ignoring the distraction of noise and QRM myself. The NR (especially F1-4) gives the impression of a very narrow filter, but used with a wide bandwidth (2.5 KHz typical for me) you can hear the widely separated signals-- it is an eerie and pleasant effect. I am beginning to trust the NR so I can leave it on and tune across the quieted band knowing it will not miss any signals. Anyhow, here are the settings I am using. You can try them for a start. YMMV, as they say... AGC Slow AGC Threshold 8 AGC Slope 1 AFX Delay 2 RX Eq Flat 0db CW Pitch 520 Hz (typical) BW 2.5 KHz (typical) Cheap Sony MDR-210 headphones (probably should get something better) BTW, someone else mentioned being able to copy signal pitch down to 50 HZ in the previous beta; I can copy comfortably down to about 110 Hz with the above setup. I am used to using a receiver with AGC turned off, AF Gain at max, and adjusting the volume with the RF Gain. But the NR+AGC is a lot more convenient (don't have to keep riding the RF Gain control) and, so far, just as effective as far as I can tell. Can't really compare the NR to the earlier versions because I didn't use it all that much. 73, Drew AF2Z On Fri, 28 Aug 2009 00:29:09 -0500, you wrote: Where can I buy the book? [Elecraft] NR in the latest K3 firmware released yesterday
I find this to be a great improvement on SSB for weaker ones buried in the noise. With NR turned on to the F1-1 setting I could pull out the weak JAs and VK/ZLs this morning on 40 SSB. It truly works well without to much of the hollow in the tunnel reception. Turning up the NR settings beyond the first doesn't seem to offer improvement. On CW the improvement isn't that great unless I open up the bandwidth to the F1 SSB filter. With FL2 turned on to about 300 Hz the weak signal improvement isn't as pronounced as on SSB. I guess the question is to know if narrow band CW signals can expect the same level of improvement using any DSP NR algorithm? Also, the CW mode auto tune tap on SPOT is slick. I'll keep that. [Elecraft] NR
I have a constant S5 to S7 noise floor here at my QTH.. It's both QRN and QRM. This is especially true when the conditions change so that the DX is present. I find that when I use NR 3-5 with Med5 I reduce the QRN by at least 2 S units. I've never had an NR that actually reduced random band noise, other than perhaps electrical impulse generators. Granted, I've come from the Yaesu world. Michael N6MQL - Merv, Interesting, I have used the shift and on my unit the FC* is at 150. I find moving it down to 90 helps (toning down the higher pitches noise) as well as playing with the bandwidth (trial and re-trial). Noise seems to be about S3 in my area with no improvement or reduction in noise using DSP (both IF's) or using Noise Reduction at any of the settings. NR seems to be pretty ineffective unless it's just operator error but, I think I have a fair understanding of going through the settings while listening to the atmospheric noise.. [Elecraft] NR
Elecrafters, Very interesting the varied experiences with the K3 NR. All I can say is that in the past season (Sept.-March) I have worked 192 countries on 80m. This is a good testament to the NR effectiveness on qrn/qrm/etc. I very seldom use the K3 with the NR off. On the other hand, the recent comment on the great effectiveness of the OMNI VII NR is confusing to me. My OMNI VII has the least effective NR I have experienced thusfar. The best NR I have had in the past was on an OMNI VI+. All depends on the operators ear/preferences/ and perhaps quirks of individual radios. I got the K3 especially for low band DXing as that is my favorite passtime. 73 and K3success to all,Mike K5NU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] NR and Audio increase
The post from BA4RF etc about the NR causing the audio to blast, I mentioned I do not work SSB but tried went to SSB and confirmed the increase in audio, well its on all modes as far as I can tell, to be more truthfull I do not use NR as I find it to non effective to CW work at least the for what I want, If you have a decent signal strength CW signal tuned to the pitch setting and hit NR with a setting of 4 the audio increases dramatically, I tried it also listening to AM broad cast on 40 meters and had the same increase. So unless its my radio only again the NR function is not working on all modes as of the last couple updates. AGC updates effected the NR in some fashion? Re: [Elecraft] NR and Audio increase
I can almost guarantee this is going to be another one of those, My radio doesn't act like that threads. The reason being, this phenomenon is level sensitive. With a weak signal the noise reduction lowers the signal strength but above a certain level, it increases the signal dramatically. With a -110 dBm signal (1000 Hz beat note) turning on NR (F1-1) reduces the audio signal 6 dB. At -100 dBm input, NR *increases* the signal 11 dB. At -90 dBm it's up 16 dB.
