. I contacted the maker and they gave authorization to return it via
FedEx for repair or replacement. I paid a little extra (I forgot how
much) for a tracking number for the item going to the maker. They sent me
a tracking number on a replacement unit they were sending to replace the
one sent in. FedEx reported that the item had been received by the local
terminal and had been placed on a truck for delivery. Three weeks later
it still was not delivered. I had to ask the maker of the unit to file a
claim with the carrier (FedEx) in order to finally get a replacement unit
delivered. For that reason, FedEx is nowhere near the top three in terms
of carriers that would be selected if I had to ship any item for whatever
reason.

Of course, YMMV.

Jim and All,

Well, I think this happens a good bit, but it certainly is the exception
rather than the rule considering the volume of packages that are shipped
every day--it's probably millions.

I used to live in Memphis, which is FedEx headquarters. My neighbor two
doors down was the head of FedEx IT (info technology). On my 40th birthday,
my wife threw a little neighborhood party for me, and my FedEx neighbor was
one of the attendees. His name is Jim Barksdale. This was 1981. I
remember that a bunch of us were sipping toddies in the kitchen, and Jim had
our undivided attention while he explained his latest project which is how
FedEx was going to be able to track packages using satellites! I think
FedEx was the first to do this, but I may be wrong. Initially the tracking
was more rudimentary, but now they can keep tabs on things with those little
hand-held devices they have. I think it's pretty amazing myself.

By the way, Jim went on to bigger and better things. Later he was president
of FedEx, and after that he got entrepeneurial, including starting a company
called Netscape!

Priority Mail, if handled properly by the originator, will
show time and date of the originating Post Office, receipt
at the destination regional mail facility if any, receipt at
the destination Post Office and delivery information with a
12 hour (approx) lag. I use it all the time.

Even with insurance USPS is far less expensive than US or
FedEx unless the shipper has "negotiated" rates.

I've had far less difficulty with loss claims with USPS than
with either UPS or FedEx (both of which seem to use third
party insurance companies). USPS will take up to six weeks
to pay off a claim but they have been quite reasonable to
deal with (including international claims).

U I've shipped and waited for quite a number of packages via
UPS Ground and the FedEx equivalent. Being railroad oriented, I can
usually determine which railroad it is on (yes, the Ground services ship
by rail) by the terminal involved, but quite often the only scans are
when the container is transferred from one rail carrier to the next.
Example - a package headed here will be scanned at origin and the first
intermodal rail terminal, then at a transfer point near Chicago, then
"silence" for three days until it arrives in Portland (OR) which is the
intermodal terminal serving this area. I do know the transit times if
all is in order, but if the train sits out in the middle of nowhere for
a day or two or three for any of several reasons that are proffer to
cover that eventuality (been there, done that, eight summer hours in the
Mojave Desert at one time because of a derailment ahead and the crew
having to be relieved), the tracking site will not show it until the
destination terminal scan.

With that said, I use USPS and the ground services of UPS and FedEx as
appropriate.

2008-03-31 Thread Jim's mail
Just a few comments on this topic. A little over a year ago, I visited a
family member in Albuquerque, NM. They gave me an original painting, oil on
canvas, and told me to enjoy it. Just before (maybe two hours prior)
leaving for home, I went to a ABQ post office (USPS) and had the painting,
now packed in a proper sized box, shipped via Express mail. Early the next
morning I answered a knock on the door. It was a letter carrier with the
painting that I had to sign for. Total cost including the Express mail
charge was about $35.00.

On the "other" companies, a few years ago another family member gave us some
entertainment equipment. After a short time the unit stopped working as it
should. I contacted the maker and they gave authorization to return it via
FedEx for repair or replacement. I paid a little extra (I forgot how much)
for a tracking number for the item going to the maker. They sent me a
tracking number on a replacement unit they were sending to replace the one

Re: [Elecraft] OT: UPS Rates - Editorial Comment

2008-03-31 Thread T. David Yarnes
I'm not all that familiar with UPS rates now and previously.
But it doesn't make much sense that rates would have
"skyrocketed" just because of the increased cost of fuel.
If this has indeed happened, then I think UPS is using fuel
costs as an excuse to inordinately raise prices. Fuel costs
are only part of the overall cost of shipping, and they
shouldn't represent the majority of the overall cost. Like
most other services, salaries, equipment costs, facility
costs, etc. should represent most of the cost. Fuel costs
may have doubled, or nearly so, in the past year, but that
should only apply to a portion of the overall cost. They
can spread this increased cost over a lot of packages. If
this weren't true, you would see similar increases in food
costs, etc. These have gone up too, but not as dramatically
as you make it sound for shipping of packages. But you
don't say how much the increase really is, so I can't make
any kind of real comparison.

USPS priority mail has been a very cost effective way to
ship smaller packages and envelopes for some time. It has
always been cheaper than UPS, and I find it to generally be
faster! The one thing that is lacking is the ability to
track your package. If I am given the option, I usually
choose USPS priority mail. I've never had a problem using
that option, but I must admit the lack of tracking is
something that would make me nervous if it were something
truly valuable being shipped. Priority mail can be 1 to 2
days faster than UPS. I'm not sure you could send something
as big as a radio by Priority Mail, but perhaps a smaller
radio would be allowed size wise. But I don't think I would
be shipping my K3 via USPS. I want to know exactly where it
is all the way to the destination. The tracking systems
used by FedEx and UPS pretty much guarantee your package
won't get lost.

A couple of reasons. As you mention, there is no tracking ability. Not
only can you not figure out where the package is, neither can USPS. If
the package didn't arrive when you thought it did, they'll say "wait a
couple of weeks".

The other issue is insurance cost. USPS seems low cost until you ship a
$600 item and have to pay for insurance coverage. Then the costs become
much more similar. As bad as FedEx and UPS are for damage claims, the
USPS is far worse.

So, for small items, low $$ items, USPS is a great way to go. For truly
important stuff, stuff that has real value to it, I'm usually going with
FedEx or UPS.

You would be hard pressed to beat the USPS today. The Priority Mail
flat rate

service is the way to go. Check here:

http://www.usps.com/shipping/flatrate.htm?from=priority&page=flatrate

$4.60 for an envelope and $8.95 for a box. Whatever you can fit in it,
and they

furnish the box or envelope too. Free sizes here:

http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductCategoryDisplay?catalogId=10152&storeId=10001&categoryId=13359&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=11820&top_category=11820

I've abandoned a purchase when the vendor could or would not use this
service.
Why pay 2 or more times the USPS rate for ground service across the
country by

one of the Big 3 carriers taking 5 days, this is usually 3 day service.

No, I'm not a Postal Employee just a satisfied user of the service.
I'll concede
that the tracking of a package is not as good. All you get is pick up
and delivery.

I have been using US Postal Service for all my shipping.
They are cheaper right now, and I sure an increase will be
in the works, but they good service as well. Also, they

do not up charge for shipping like other agents for UPS.
Right now the USPS is a great bargain for shipping.

Yes, USPS rates will be increasing on May 12. However, their
rates are still much lower than either UPS or FedEX ground for
similar service - both Express Mail and Priority Mail are
much less expensive than "Next Day" and "Two day" service
with signature confirmation to residential addresses than the
competition.

I use 100% USPS for my shipping.

I sure the repairs will be Damon...but UPS rates have soared since gas
and diesel have skyrocketed. I ordered a 10 dollar part from
Mouser and they shipped it for 10 dollars. So the 10 dollar part
cost me 20 bucks. I called Mouser to complain but of course
they could do nothing about the charges. I asked them to
make provision on the web site to choose USPS. Much cheaper
for small parts.

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply. If you don't
have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it. If you can't find
any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common Sense. Is
Common Sense divine?
