[Elecraft] QSK Master T/R switch and K3S

2020-10-05 Thread Eric Norris
I have pulled my old QSK Master off the shelf for use with a K3S, KAT500,
and AL-811H. This is the solid-state version, not the vacuum relay version
of the QSK Master.

My question is this: should I strap the QSK M for 2ms hold time after ptt
release, or 8ms--and should I change the delay setting from 8ms in the K3S
menu?

QSK 811as!! The mind reels. Thanks for the help.

[Elecraft] QSK question on KX3

2019-12-07 Thread Joseph Street
Since getting my hands on the used KX3 and ancilliaries that came with it, I've
been spending my spare time going thru the manuals and finding the various menu
items hands on the rig. I've updated the firmware in the KX3 and PX3 but
haven't done anything yet with the amp. One thing I notice is when I set the
delay to zero and key the rig with VOX ptt set so there is no RF everything
seems smooth. When I actually run RF into a 50 ohm load I notice the RX
doesn't recover very gracefully between DIT's (running 20wpm or more) and I
hear a really distracting audio disturbance on the speaker. I thought it might
be from pushing the little speaker too hard and had audio gain way up because
no antenna was connected so I tried again with phones and audio gain down
around 20 and it is still there. AGC is off. Preamp on/off doesn't really make
any difference. Filter settings make no difference. If I set delay to 005 ms
it is gone but then I can only hear between letters and words wh
ich is not full QSK. I can live with this, but before I bought this rig
people I talked to told me the Elecraft rigs have really great QSK and I was
expecting to run with zero delay. Is what I am hearing a sign something isn't
right with this rig or do others get a similar experience? Have I missed
something in setting up for full breakin?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft QSK

2017-03-01 Thread Vic Rosenthal 4X6GP

No, the real question is why doesn't Elecraft make a KPA1500!

I agree about the Alpha PIN diodes. I had an Alpha 86 for a few years,
and never had any trouble with the PIN diodes -- and I made plenty of
'antenna mistakes'. I sold it because I was tired of waiting the 90
seconds for it to warm up, and I believed that Elecraft was about to
release the KPA800 and 1500.

I suspect some of the PIN diode failures were due to static discharges.
I had ICE antenna protectors that provided a good DC path to ground and
a good lightning ground system. Or else I was lucky.

When the 87A was first introduced there were indeed PIN diode

Re: [Elecraft] QSK the K3

2015-07-17 Thread Gerry Kersus via Elecraft

I have the old synthesizers (K3 S/N 1428 running version 5.29) and, although I
don't often use QSK, I did check after seeing Bill's comments. I believe Bill
is right and the QSK response does appear to be slower. I normally run cw
between 24 and 32 wpm. I did set CW QRQ to on and it does seem to switch
faster but it's hard to quantify.

Are there any other parameters to change for those of us who may not upgrade
synthesizers?

Tnx 73,
Gerry, W1GD

Bill,

There were some firmware changes made when the new synthesizers were
introduced, and as I recall some of those changes involved QSK
operation. Initial reports on the new synthesizers from users indicated
that QSK was better.
I have not seen any reports of QSK changes with the old synthesizers,
but you may have hit on something - continue with the tests and tell
us your results.

2015-07-16 Thread David Bunte
Bill -

I have used QSK for thousands of QSOs since I got my K3 4 years ago. I
have seen no changes at all.. but I am not a real QRQ op. I usually run
about 28 wpm... sometimes about 32, and very rarely a bit higher than
that. I did put in the new Synth boards, and have verified that QSK is now
silky smooth up to speeds much higher than I dare try to operate.

Best of luck getting everything to play the way you want it to.

I’m wondering what tests Electaft is suggesting? Remember the QSK (right side
of band-switch) has two settings Full and Simi. Also in the Config menu CW QRQ

My serial number 00069 seems to work as good as ever with 5.29 installed.

2015-07-16 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
If one is going to upgrade one's K3 to the new synthesizer, then table any
QSK concerns until you have that in place. Just one of the benefits is that
the new synthesizer does state changes way faster than the old syn. RX/TX
state changes are what QSK is all about.

Besides the new syn, there have been a lot of changes to QSK, some number
of varieties of QSK now, since the olden days of firmware version 3.xx.
Way lotsa stuff under the bridge since then. Includes some very significant
improvements to AGC and K3 performance listening to a pile-up. Wayne has
been very busy over the last seven years.

You probably have your contest program set up to assert PTT. There will
be a connection from the computer to the PTT jack on the rig (K3?).
Either unplug it or tell your contest program not to assert PTT.

All of a sudden it seems I can not turn off QSK operation. QSK is in semi and
no matter how much I add or reduce the delay, the QSK break in mode remains

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] QSK clicking on Tx...

2012-02-03 Thread g4sgx
Apologies if this has been covered before. I have looked but found no
definitive answer.

This morning, after getting up early to catch the greyline for HK0NA
on 80M, (which was successful, 80M CW 40M SSB bagged with my 100W
and bit of wire.)
I noticed a clicking from the rear left (I think) of my K3 whenever I TX'd.
QSK semi instead of fully reduced it and it was not evident on on Test mode.

I am assuming this is connected with the PIN diodes.

It was only evident on 80M.

SWR was 1:1

I removed all leads suspecting RFI but no change.

The clicking gradually reduced over time... wierd

I did not notice this 2 weeks ago when I last used 80M CW.

Any suggestions ?

I only ask because I leave for Bhutan in 4 days and I'm taking it with
me for a few days operating and hope its not a pre-courser of
something horrible.

Nope, just my inverted L.

I did originally think I might be in the middle of a large RF field as
my router started disconnecting again. (It does this occasionally
depending on how wet the ground is I think.. Has been fine for ages),
but discounted this as the noise isn't a constant volume as a relay
would be, seemed to fade..

Re: [Elecraft] QSK clicking on Tx...

2012-02-03 Thread WILLIS COOKE
It sounds as if you were using the antenna coupler.  Perhaps it was one of the
relays there that was clicking.  It may be that the  edge of a band in the auto
tuner was bridged by the transmit and receive frequencies in split mode and the
antenna coupler was changing settings with the keying.  I don't know for sure
so some comment from one of the gurus at Elecraft would be useful.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK OFF

2011-11-29 Thread Fred Jensen
Let's answer Paul's actual question, Can I turn QSK off? I think you
mean require some form of manual PTT before you can send and the answer
is Yes. Turn off VOX by holding BAND DOWN. Without manual PTT, when
you send, it won't make RF and it will tell you in VFO B. You can
assert PTT through the rear panel jack, or with the XMIT function on the
front panel and then transmit.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK OFF

2011-11-29 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
QSK provides the ability to hear between CW characters (or elements if it's
fast enough) while sending.

Semi QSK is the ability to go from xmit to rx without touching any
controls (i.e. VOX for CW).

I think Fred nailed it. Paul was probably looking for a way to enable xmit
manually without a touch of the key doing it automatically.

Luca - no, the K2 can't handle transmit with good timing at 90 WPM. I think
the upper limit is 70 WPM using an external keyer or keyboard. I'm not sure
how good the timing is at 70 WPM, but I'm pretty certain it can't handle
anything faster.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK THUMPS?

2010-04-30 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
One of the issues found in QSK operation is that TX-RX state changes
MUST modulated the received envelope. It is a fact that the RX stream
must be turned off, and then turned on, to support transmitting and
that is a modulation. The RX is ON after the latter state change and
will hear the modulation. The only way to modify that modulation is by
changing the shape and rise/fall times. This is the point at which
the desire to hear between bauds, and to not hear artifacts of the
state changes, are at odds with one another. A slower transition does
less modulation, but slower can cause the transition to exceed the
baud space, defeating the reason for QSK in the first place.

To have clean hearing between bauds at 25 WPM does not allow time for
soft and no-thump transitions. If there is anything being received,
then the modulation of the RF envelope creates sidebands. The wider
the energy being modulated, the greater likelihood of modulation
sidebands. Set TX TEST, CW mode, QSK, then turn MON all the way down.
Now hold down dits with your paddle and tune across a loud signal of
any kind. Loud carrier between 7.2 and 7.3 is a good test. Most of my
friends call that thumps, particularly if there is a really loud
signal in the passband. This change is being imposed as far forward
as the PRE/ATT. If you study the schematics, a lot of RF and 1st IF
circuitry is either being switched out or reversed, thus imposing the
modulation at points of mandatory artifact sideband generation.

Having said that

Now turn the RX EQ to -16 in bands 1 and 2 and note the large drop in
the amplitude of the thump. Also note (if you have the roofing
filters for this) that the thumping is quite more pronounced with wide
roofing filters than narrow.

This is one instance where having headsets with hi fi response down to
15 Hz is no advantage.

73, Guy.

It's possible that when you started hearing the problem the noise floor had
risen up some, and then when it went away it had reduced again..

I heard this too during a QSO not too long ago. It was intermittent tho and
just started happening in the middle of the QSO. I was keying the rig
through the USB-rs232 adapter with RUMLog's keyer at about 20wpm, I thought
something had suddenly gone wrong. It did go away tho as the QSO went on...

I can't reproduce it with the build-in keyer plus paddles into a dummy load
at any power setting. Perhaps I'll have another go with this with the
 computer and see what happens.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK THUMPS?

2010-04-28 Thread lstavenhagen

I heard this too during a QSO not too long ago. It was intermittent tho and
just started happening in the middle of the QSO. I was keying the rig
through the USB-rs232 adapter with RUMLog's keyer at about 20wpm, I thought
something had suddenly gone wrong. It did go away tho as the QSO went on...

I can't reproduce it with the build-in keyer plus paddles into a dummy load
at any power setting. Perhaps I'll have another go with this with the
computer and see what happens.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK THUMPS?

2010-04-28 Thread The Smiths

You'll find that the louder the noise floor the worse the thumping. Again,
reducing your RF gain, Turning on your NB and NR will help the thumping go away.

It's possible that when you started hearing the problem the noise floor had
risen up some, and then when it went away it had reduced again..

[Elecraft] QSK THUMPS?

2010-04-27 Thread eric manning
When my K3 switches between T R in full QSK mode, I hear audio thumps.
[The tramsmitted signal is apparently clean with no clicks; I always get
good signal quality reports.]

Now, My K2 has no such thumps; you can't tell when the radio switches
between T R by listening to the audio.
The transmitted cw sidetone sounds just like any other cw signal, with
no thumps or other noise.

I would like my K3 to be the same.

Is there anything I can do to attenuate the K3's audio thumps?

Best way to eliminate this is to set the rig to semi BK IN, and turn the delay

This should give you good QSK CW.

I'm curious -- what is the T-R setting on our K2 set to?

If I set it to a high value -- say 150 (which I sometimes do when I'm using my
non-QSK AL-80A amplifier), I don't get any thumps, but I wouldn't call it QSK
by any means.

If I set the T-R setting to something less than about 8, I can start to hear
some anomalous stuff -- some minor thumps, and if I turn it down lower, I hear
more. At settings below 2, you can even get some off-frequency receiver
response. (ie you'll hear adjacent signals while keying, which stops the minute
you stop keying)

Re: [Elecraft] QSK THUMPS?

2010-04-27 Thread Gary, W7TEA

Eric, a few things you might try:

Check whether you have NEW chosen in CW WGHT menu (p 54)

Reduce RF gain

Determine if the thumping changes if you decrease power and/or bypass the
linear amp.

Determine if it occurs when you operating SPLIT

You might share your menu settings with the group. Someone sharper than I
am may see the culprit.

I think what we are really talking about is Keying Compensation, not Code
Weight. I use a K1EL WinKeyer with Keying Compensation set to 06 ms with my

long. To regain this lost dit time when using QSK, the default setting for
 the CW WGHT element-to-space ratio is 1.15. (52 ms X 1.15 = 60 ms
approximately.) So the 1.15 default weight factor was seemingly arrived at
by using 20 WPM as a nominal QSK code speed.

Assuming this reasoning is correct (Wayne/Eric, please enlighten me if it
isn't), two things come to mind:

First, since amplifier T-R speeds below 4 ms are readily achievable using
vacuum RF relays, and faster than that using PIN diodes, it might make sense
to make TX DLY settings of less than 8 ms available -- say, down to 2 ms,
while still leaving the default at 8 ms.

Second, as QSK code speed is increased, the TX DLY factor (whatever it is,
currently 8 ms by default) becomes a larger and larger proportion of the
element time, requiring a larger weight ratio to correct for the TX DLY
shortening. For example, at 25 WPM (48 ms element) and TX DLY = 8 ms, a CW
WGHT setting of 1.20 would be correct; at 30 WPM (40 ms element), again with
TX DLY = 8 ms, a CW WGHT setting of 1.25 would be correct; and so on. Might
it make sense to optionally have CW WGHT track with the user's code speed
setting during QSK operation? (You wouldn't want to do this in non-QSK CW
mode, of course.) The tracking formula would be based on the user's TX DLY
setting, whether 8 ms or something faster/slower.

 Of course, this would only apply if the internal CW keyer were being used;
if using an external key or keyer, you'd be stuck with a fixed CW WGHT
 setting...

[Elecraft] QSK CW: TX DLY vs CW WGHT with internal keyer

2010-03-25 Thread Bill VanAlstyne W5WVO
Just thinking out loud here, having recently upgraded my 3-500Z amplifier with

[Elecraft] QSK Mod For Ameritron ALS-600 or ALS-500

2009-11-01 Thread David Y.
Hi All,

I recently added an Ameritron ALS-600 amp to my shack. Initially I wasn't
that keen on the ALS-600 because it wasn't QSK. However, I read about a
mod that Phil Salas, AD5X, came up with, and it is cheap and easy. You can
find all the details on Phil's website, www.ad5x.com.

Anyway, I bought the amp, and today I added the mod. It went very
quickly--no fuss. Works very well, and costs only a small fraction of what
a QSK accessory would normally run. Phil has a complete kit, with PC board,
for $31 shipped, or you can root around and find the parts yourself, and
make your own board. I strongly recommend Phil's kit.

The factory relay is removed, and two small molded relays are substituted in
the mod. You also add a diode on the PC board, and connect a few new wires.
That's it! The old relay is very noisey, but the replacements are much,
much quieter. You still hear some chatter, but the improvement is very
significant.

Everything works very well with my K3, so I'm pretty happy at this point. I
don't use the amp all the time, but I really needed the help, particularly
on 40 meters, when condx aren't all that great.

Anyway, I thought some other K2/K3 owners might be interested in the
process.

[Elecraft] QSK

...input from the Elecraft community about a new amplifier...
...Acom 1010 but I can not determine... that amplifier really has QSK.
...I love QSK...

Jim:
My $.02 worth -

I have an Acom 1000 - absolutely full true QSK. It takes advantage of the
Ft-1000mp QSK feature - the 'ready to xmit' signal is fed from the radio to
the amp. The amp closes it's relays and returns an 'OK' signal to the
radio. The radio then produces the neccessary RF. At the conclusion of the
character, the proceedure is reversed. The amp is NEVER hot-switched. All
this from the closure of the key in less than the blink of an eye, and in
complete silence - a marvel to behold. It produces +/- 1000 watts out, 160
to 6m.

The Acom 1010 is a lower powered version - lighter for DXpeditions, 600w
out but no 6m coverage. Same GU74b tetrode.

Not to say that there aren't other good amps out there.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK options inquiry

2009-08-12 Thread Brian Alsop

Doug,

Here's what I've gleaned on the 1010

The 1010 is a different beastie from the 1000. It isn't just a 1000
without 6M.

1) takes more drive for full output.
2) full output at least a few hundred watts less. (I also believe the
transformer is not has hefty)

3) an electronicly controlled bias circuit
4) The RF deck is different, it doesn't have the extra shielding the
1000 has. This is both a plus (if you change tubes) and a potential
negative.

It is a good amp for countries with an enforced 400 W power limit.

Unfortunately I can't comment on the amp key circuit or QSK.

2009-08-12 Thread Lyle Johnson
ARRL has reviewed the Acom 1000, 1010 and 2000. See QST or the ARRL
website.

The answer to all this discussion is found in this pair of sentences
from the 1010 review in December, 2006:

So what does the 1010 give up in exchange for its svelte packaging and
lower price? The short answer is about 300W output, full break-in CW
(QSK) and 6 meter coverage.

QST is your friend...

Re: [Elecraft] qsk options inquiry

2009-08-12 Thread cx7tt
I have the Acom 1000 and use it with the K3/100 (#250)...full QSK, no
problems at all with keying,(up to 44wpm) etc. I got it in 2004. I have
made over 15000 Qs with many of these Qs during contest operations,
phone, cw and rtty. I do crank it back to 500w out when running rtty so
as to run a little cooler. If you like computer controlled amps, this is
a remarkable little amp, very quiet and puts out about 600w or so. It is
NOT a 1000w amp...the specs on the tube the 4CX800 say plate dissipation
is 800w...plug in typical efficiency and that will put it down around
600wto 680wMy LP-100 shows 800w peak and my Bird shows around
600-650w (key dwn) output into Steppir 3 ele yagi. Not sure that anyone
could tell the difference over the air if power was 1000w or 600w.
Not sure about the marketing of the amp now...did Array Solutions or DX
Eng pick up the line in the US?
A recent email to K6ND (US rep) garnered a response from a technician in
LZ land.
All in all, I like the amp and would recommend one to someone in the US
or EU.

I have run my Acom1000 at a measured 1kw out on 6m for JT6M, this is a
high duty mode (100% keydown, 1 minute on 1 minute off) which is, I am
sure pretty hard on tube life but no issues so far where the tube is
concerned. I have had this amp since late 2001 so it's an early model.
The ACOM 1k runs hot but well within it's rated temp ratings @1Kw high
duty cycle. Keep the dust filter at the back well cleaned and ensure
that the exhaust vent is free.

I measured a little over 1100 watts into a Dummy load on most bands.
My measurement is based on a Dummy load and an LP-100 calibrated against
a Rohde Schwarz power sensor borrowed from work

the power meter on the acom 1k can be a little optimistic, reading
around 1300W for 1050W into the dummy load ;-)

if you are only getting ~ 600W out of your Acom 1k you may want to
check that the transformer taps are set correctly for your line voltage
and that your shack supply is not 'sagging' too much on keydown

[Elecraft] QSK options inquiry

2009-08-11 Thread Jim Danehy
I ordered a K3 last week. I built my K2 about 8 years ago and operate it daily.
I also have a Ten Tec Omni 6+ and a Hercules II amplifier. I enjoy the Ten Tec
transceiver and amplifier when used in contests and chasing DX. The purpose of
this email is to solicit (direct and reflector) input from the Elecraft
community about a new amplifier that I can use with the K2 and K3. I also see
that Array Solutions has a QSK box which might be an option. The QSK box from
Array Solutions (they call it QSK Master) would be a way to integrate my
Elecraft rigs with my Henry amplifier as well as the smaller Hercules II. I
have thought about the Acom 1010 but I can not determine from the Internet
whether that amplifier really has QSK. I have also considered the smaller 600
to 700 watt Tokyo Hy-power amps.

I have not followed the saga of the Elecraft amps so maybe somebody can apprise
me of where that has gone.

Your advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I love QSK. I realize
some do not.

Dunno about the 1010 but the ACOM 1000 works beautifully with my K3 on full

For a manually tuned, not-quite-full power amp with a warmup cycle, it's

[Elecraft] QSK With K3 and KW Amp

2009-04-26 Thread Ed G
Hello,
Is any anyone using one of the old DEO QSK-1500 full QSK switching
units (or the similar PIN diode QSK unit from Ameritron) with their K3 and
external amplifier? I haven't yet received my K3 but I would like to hook it
up with my Heath SB-220 to run full QSK. I suspect that I will need to use
an external keyer (and not the one internal to the K3) to trigger the PIN
diode switching electronics. Same deal with software-generated CW.
If you are running full QSK this way with your K3, let me know if you
experienced any problems setting up the switching, and if you are
successfully running contest/computer software in the CW mode with full QSK.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK With K3 and KW Amp

I worked with Doc Sheller on the DEO QSK1500 many years
ago ...

With the current behavior of the K3's Key Out jack,
you should be able to use the FT-757 instructions
in the DEO QSK1500 manual (K3, Key Out to QSK 1500
Amp Rly In, and QSK1500 AMP RLY Out to the SB-200
PTT line). The QSK 1500 will follow keying from the
K3 ...

If you want to add an extra level of safety, connect
a pull-up resistor between +5V and the K3 INH input
and connect the QSK 1500 Pos Key Out to the INH
input of the K3 (close to ground to allow RF).

[Elecraft] QSK with the K3 and Ten Tec 425 amp

2008-07-08 Thread Jack Colson
I tried to interface the K3 with my 425 amp as suggested by TenTec. That
did not work.

Has someone done this and if so what did you do.

Now I have the K3 key out going to 425 PTT in and the amp if following
the keying.

In the Ten Tec method, you connect the key to to amp and have it send a
keyed signal to the key input on the K3.

Not a big deal but an interesting test.

Thank you ,

I did this with other rigs, but have not needed to do it with the K3.

Now I have the K3 key out going to 425 PTT in and the amp is following
the keying.

This is what I'm doing and it's working fine. I have the K3 set up for
13mS of keying pre-delay. That is, the K3 keys the amp 13mS before the K3
produces RF. A shorter delay may work, but I'm being conservative because
I don't want to fry vacuum relays. :) Study the addenda to the K3
documentation to find the menu setting.

[Elecraft] QSK - Why don't you like it?

2008-04-02 Thread Darwin, Keith
I've always wondered why some don't like QSK. Today, I may have had an
epiphany.

I wonder if the dislike is really just a mix issue? Maybe those who
dislike QSK just have their sidetone too low and it gets lost in the
band noise?

In both my TenTec rigs and my Elecraft rigs, side tone is controlled by
a separate control, apart from the AF gain. I set the sidetone, then
adjust the AF gain to mix in as much or little of the band as I want. I
can have it be 80% sidetone with a hint of the band turn the AF gain up
to match or exceed the volume of the sidetone. Sometimes, I turn the AF
gain down to make the band just a bit of background noise.

[Elecraft] QSK and Monitor on the K3

2007-10-08 Thread Ed Muns
I ran QSK all weekend in the CQP with the K3 driving an Alpha 87A and a Pro3
driving another 87A. I like to reduce the monitor level as low as possible
and on the K3/87A combo, it was extremely quiet and smooth. But the Pro3
could not subdued by comparison. First of all, even with the sidetone
reduced to zero, there was still leakage that was much louder than what the
K3 could be adjusted to. In addition, the Pro3 had popping and slapping
on the TX/RX transitions between code elements that was very tiring. The
Pro3 in one ear made it impossible to copy weak signals on the K3 in the
other ear. I was constantly having to manually switch the headphones to the
K3 only when working a station on that radio. The other way was fine ... K3
transmitting in one ear while copying a weak signal on the Pro3 in the other
ear.

At least six K3's were on in the CQP: AB7R, N0SS, W6GV (K2VCO), N6XI, K7RAT
(N6TR) and K6YT (W0YK).

[Elecraft] QSK and the 2nd receiver

2007-09-08 Thread Stewart Rolfe

Hi,

Hope this isn't a dumb question but I've never used a rig with a 2nd
receiver anyway...

So was wondering if when using the K3 with 2nd rx on a single antenna,
will I be able to listen to the 2nd receiver while transmitting on the
first vfo when full qsk is invoked...? eg while calling cq contest on
one band will I be able to tune another band on the 2nd rx for mults etc..?
I've got a feeling I'm in for some new experiences when it finally
arrives..!

Re: [Elecraft] QSK and the 2nd receiver

2007-09-08 Thread G3SJJ

No Stewart, that is SO2R.

I use SO2V a lot here with the FT1kMP and that is what you will get with
the K3, but a lot better. With the MP you can only listen on the same
band because of the way the sub rx path is routed, although it is
possible on the higher bands The K3 has an independant sub rx so I
assuming you can listen on different bands.

Obviously when the radio goes into transmit the rx antennas are
disconnected. For SO2R here I have a WX0B Sixpak antenna switch at the
base of the tower, a pair of Topten band decoders and two Dunestar 600
bandpass filters in the shack, together with two separate 90m runs of
H100 coax and two 6 way screened cable runs. That's SO2R. It's ggod fun
Do a Google search on WX0B, Topten and SO2R for more info. I can't
actually do SO2R at present as I sold my K2, so egerly awaiting my K3
which I am sure will be Radio 1 in the system.

BTW, in the recent IARU SSB FD, we were using SR2O, otherwise known as
Big Knob Man and Little Knob Man. We used my GU8D-special (designed for
IOTA contest) SR2O unit for switching the mic, ie first one to hit the
footswitch grabs the tx. Good fun.

Subject: [Elecraft] contest reflections on K2 - addendum

Hi all:

1. QSK. This is user skill level dependent. If you do 20 wpm or
less, the K2 QSK may be fine for you. During contesting, I am going
at least 32-34 wpm, and not uncommonly at 40wpm. At these speeds and
during a contest, I NEED to hear everything immediately (that is what
top-end contesting is about). So not hearing between dits at slow
contest speeds of 32 wpm is an issue for me. NOTE that I still used
the K2 despite that deficit because OVERALL, it is a great radio. But
for someone used to real QSK, this is not real QSK. Ask other serious
contesters and they will say the same. For most K2 users, who are
clearly not serious contesters, this is not an issue at all. Since
the K3 says very much better QSK than the K2, I would easily assume
that the deficit is real and acknowledged.

[Elecraft] QSK Relay Box

2007-03-23 Thread John Huffman
I have just finished building the QSK box designed by Phil Silas AD5X. It
really works great! I use my K2/100 and ASL-600 combination for smooth
break-in. Nice to have quiet relays and to be able to hear what's happening on
frequency while I'm sending. This will be super for chasing DX.

Phil's plans are at
http://www.ad5x.com/images/Articles/QSKrevA.pdf

I use Tom N0SS's T-R relay in the K2 as it is plenty hardy enough to switch the
QSK box relay and I have the KPA/100 in an EC2 under the desk

This is a great alternative to the Ameritron QSK-5 box as it costs only about
$100 to build if you buy new parts, and it isn't sensitive to static buildup
like pin diodes.

Highly recommended.

[Elecraft] QSK in split

2007-02-12 Thread Trail Fox
while QSK is a barely adequate 22 wpm or so in normal mode, it sure seems a lot
slower in split mode. At a common place 28 wpm, there is no hearing between
letters, only between words, meaning it is hard to quickly pick up that a DX
station is sending, and listen in time to hear who he is answering.

* Why is this?

* Can it be improved?

[Elecraft] QSK revisited

2006-07-24 Thread Rajiv Dewan, N2RD
After my last email on comparing QSK implementations in the K2 and
the Yaesu FT-1000MP and the comments from knowledgeable people on
this forum, I decided to measure carefully and to make more careful
notes on what I heard.

I setup a K2 and an MP to transmit at the same frequency into dummy
loads. To test the K2, I transmitted continuously on the MP at a
level where the K2 showed a steady S9 signal. While this was being
received by the K2, I set up my keyer to transmit the letter v at
different speeds on the K2. I listened to the K2 and analyzed the
sound using Spectrogram. I then did the whole thing with the MP as
the device under test.

The details of the test, the results, and images of the Spectrogram
screenshots can be found at http://rajiv.dewan.info/qsk/
My subjective opinion is that the K2 is great if all one is
interested in is inter-character or inter-word reception. In fact,
the hang time is so well calibrated that it is very silent and easy
on the ears. This is especially important for long contests.

Inter-element reception is very demanding. For this purpose, I prefer
the Elecraft K2 while transmitting up to 20wpm. At 25wpm or greater,
the K2 essentially does not receive between elements. At 30 wpm
Yaesu still has a usable QSK implementation but the extra noise is
tiring. I do not think I could stand the noise from 30wpm or faster
for long during a long contest. Hang time can be increased (Menu
item 7-4 increased from 5 to 7 or 10ms) to where the QSK would be
essentially be useless between elements but would serve some purpose
to detect signals between words. With the increased hang time, where
inter-element QSK is essentially disabled, I prefer the K2 as the
Yaesu remains noisier. I will have to try even larger hang times and
compare the sound.

Hope you find this interesting,

RE: [Elecraft] QSK revisited

2006-07-24 Thread N2TK, Tony
Hi Raj,

Tnx for the info from your tests.

I find I really like QSK when I'm trying to work DX, like with the current
4O3T operation. But when I am running stations in a contest I do not use
QSK. Too rough on the ears using QSK all the time. But with good QSK you can
pick out your call right away when 4O3T came back without guessing or asking
for repeats. Even at the speeds 4O3T was using on the high bands it sounded
good and you can hear between the elements without pops with the TS950SDX
and Acom 2000A.

I made the R17 mod plus I set T-R to I believe .01 or .02 which got rid of
the pops. It sounds quiet. Just can't hear between the elements. But that is
okay since I use the K2 for Dxpeditions.

almost as if I did not have breakin turned on, the Yaesu audio was
full of low frequency thumps and distortion so much so that it made
it hard to copy well between morse elements. I was transmitting at

the K2 filter was at the 400Hz setting. I also have the INRAD
roofing filter installed on the Yaesu.

But, I guess that the people on this list already know this!

I bought the K2 to use primarily as an IF rig for VHF and up. I was

My suspicion is that he didn't really mean 'elements', but rather
letters. No K2 of any serial number can hear between elements
(dits/dahs) at 35 wpm.

The K2's QSK is much smoother and quieter than most other radios. It
is, however, not particularly fast. I've made a mod to speed it up (see
http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/modAny.html, look for Faster QSK

Good question.

While the signaling rate of a CW signal does have an affect on
bandwidth, the majority of the wideband products come from the rapid
rise and fall times of the signal envelope. (that's why key clicks
are heard so far away from the operating frequency) Don't expect a 99
wpm signal to be much wider than 35 wpm.

That said, no one can copy a 99 wpm CW signal. The top QRQ guys are
around 60 wpm.
With the regulation by bandwidth, does this now put a speed limit
on cw?

Potentially, but that limit is so high as to be practically no limit.

Keyboards - definitely! It's the only way to consistently generate
high-speed CW.

Readers - definitely NOT. Most QRQ ops copy in their heads. They
wouldn't lower themselves to use a reader.

Back in the late 70's, when I was a Novice, and later a General, I
was involved in the WV Novice Net. A couple of the net control guys
were blind hams. They would call the net at 5 wpm, go through the
traffic, close it, and then call each other on the 'net frequency --
at 40+ wpm! They both had CW keyboards (which were pretty new back
then), and would converse quite a bit back and forth at these speeds.

A few hams out there can skip along at 30-40 WPM but they are in the
minority by far. Contesters don't count as they are locked into
a set

format and not much information is actually exchanged except for
the required data.

Most of the really, really good contesters I know can also copy
conversationally QRQ CW.

Me? I can do almost 30 wpm in a contest, but I'm back down below 24
for conversational CW.

Really good high speed telegraphers are rather
scarce. (I'm speaking of those using straight keys or bugs, or
sideswiper keys).

That's pretty much a dead art.

Ouch indeed :-). My fastest reliable speed ever is about 25 wpm. It's
almost embarrassing to say I've been 90% CW for 15 yrs and my speed has
yet to get much over 20. I guess I'm just not serious enough about it.

But, I have a lot of fun with the straight key (SKCC) working stations
at 15 wpm +/-. We can get beyond RST/OP/QTH and actually talk to each
other.

I have a lot of QSOs around 28 WPM. Not as many over 30, and once in a
while a 40+ wpm QSO. There are a few guys out there working at 50-65
wpm and even faster, but I can't send that fast with a paddle and refuse
to use a keyboard!

But the original question was based on using QSK in DX pileups where the
DX station might be sending at 35-40. In this case fast QSK is
extremely useful in keeping in sync with the pileup. You will not get
the DX station if you call while he's sending, and slow QSK will cause
you to lose sync.

I love my K2, but like any object of love, it isn't flawless!

The origional post was about achieving optimal QSK performance, but has since

[Elecraft] QSK Redux

2006-05-08 Thread Joseph Reed
I asked a question about the audio pop that occurs in cw when T-R is set to 0
(QSK), I discovered a 1993 thread that discussed lowering a resistance value.

Two questions for those who have done it. First how effective was it? Meaning
at what speed could you still hear between character elements ( dots and dashes
- the subatomic particles of cw). And did it have a deleterious effect on your
transmit key form? Also after you did the mod did it eliminate the pop, or
just reduce it.

The reason I ask is today I was chasing an A71 and the EU wall was up in full
force. At a T-R setting of .01 I couldn't tell when he started to transmit.
I'd say I was running about 30wpm. I ended up transfering the flag to the
756Pro where I was able to achieve full break in. And no, with the EU wall up
I knew I had a snowballs chance of working him. Fun trying just the same.

No.

Various K2's seem to have different degrees of pops or clicks. I
suggest that you look at http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html
and look for related entries. I found that adding the DSP and the
KPA100 complicates getting clean QSK. I don't want to go into detail,
because my own observations have been inconsistent and I've made and
unmade so many changes that I'm confused about what works and what doesn't!

I'll check out the site you referenced. I don't have a KDSP2, being a code
kind of guy I am good to go with the KAF2.

I love the receive qualities of my K2, and really, really wanted to make it my
main HF rig. But if it isn't capable of QSK it can't take over Op Pos #1 for
serious DXing. But I love the radio and it will get lots of non-DX use.

QSK is the holy grail of cw ops. I am kicking myself as the best QSK I ever
owned was a freak of nature. In the 1980's I had a Yaesu FT-757 GX II that
held QSK beyond 40 wpm. Just the fluke of the components. But was it sweet to
key!
