RE: EU ascensions - Which countries officially accept the CE mark ?

2003-01-20 Thread Fleury, Bill

David,

I think you will find that this is a valid page but since the URL is so long,
part of it drops to the next line. When you click on it, the part that dropped
off doesn't get included in the address. If you manually enter the part of the
URL that dropped off it will take you to the proper page. :-)

All,

There are 8 countries, that I know of, that are currently in the process
of
ascension into the EU:

The Czech Republic (*)
Turkey
Bulgaria
Hungary (*)
Poland
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia

Those with (*), I believe, have passed legislation to officially accept
the
CE mark for ITE products. Does anyone know if the remaining countries on
this list have either passed legislation to accept the CE mark, or do
they
still require their own national marks?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

EMI from heatsinks

Richard,

I have three different articles about this subject. I think I found them on
CDs from recent IEEE EMC Symposiums but I don't remember which ones or even
if they were all on the same CD. I saved the files so I can e-mail them to
you if you wish; as I don't think the files are that big.

Shock and Vibration

2002-06-12 Thread Fleury, Bill
Hi All,

Does anyone know what IEC 48D (Secretariat) 76 would be? It is called out
in the IEEE 1386:2001 standard for CMC cards as shock and vibration
requirements. I assumed that IEC 48D was a standard but apparently that is
not the case. SC 48D is a Subcommittee dealing with Mechanical Structures
for Electronic Equipment; so I'm thinking that IEC 48D (Secretariat) 76 is
the proceedings from one of their meetings but I have had no luck in
locating any information about it.
My Marketing gurus are asking me if we meet these requirements but I don't
know what the requirements are; so its kind of hard to give them an answer.
:-)

Thanks for your help.

Brodie,

For Mil Stds go to http://astimage.daps.dla.mil/quicksearch/ Some standards
are not available in PDF format to download but are available in hard copy
and are still free. You just have to set up a customer number and order the
desired standard via fax or e-mail. This is a great resource!

European environmental standard

2001-12-04 Thread Fleury, Bill

Hi All,

My apologies if this is slightly off topic for this list but I thought that,
with the wealth of knowledge out there, this would be a good place to start.

Has anyone out there had any experience with testing a product for
compliance to IEC 60721-3 (Classification of environmental conditions. Part
3: Classification of groups of environmental parameters and their
severities)? It has three sections that deal with Storage, Transportation
and Stationary use at weather protected locations. My first thought was that
possibly it was referenced in GR-63-CORE since it deals with environmental
issues but it is not. I am prepared to buy the standard if necessary but I
am trying to determine if there is an actual test regime that is specific to
this standard or if it would be covered within another standard. Our normal
test lab wasn't aware of a test program for this standard; so I thought I'd
toss it into this arena.
BTW the product here is a PMC module with one ethernet port and falls under
the ITE category.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Brian,

When you checked with UL did you mention that these numbers were on cables?
2725 and 2835 are AWM Style numbers. If you go to UL's web site and click on
Customers and then Wire and Cable and look under AWM Styles you can do a
search for specific style numbers, file numbers etc. This will give you
information about the specific style numbers.

Subject: UL2725 UL2835 on USB cables

Greetings,

We are looking for a good quality 10 foot USB cable. We have an application
where the USB cable must have a low impedance in the shield and shield
termination to pass the emissions and immunity tests for Europe.

Not knowing much about USB I did some research on the Web and USB cables.
Many
cable manufacturers lists UL2725 and UL2835 in the cable specs. What are
these
UL standards pertaining to? I check with UL and they said these are not
UL
standards. Where did they come from?

In addition to the above information, I would appreciate any recommendations
on
where to find a good quality USB cable and how to tell a good one from a
poor
one either by measurement or by specification.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Cameron,

I had a similar situation some time ago with an internal cable and it had to
do with the insulation thickness. The SJT cord was only rated 300V, and the
insulation thickness did not meet the European standard. We changed to a
600V cord, which was accepted.

Hi All,

I have a situation where the test house I normally use for safety will
accept SJT cordage for an internal power cable but a different test house
will not. The power cable conducts 240v from one power supply to another,
with both supplies internal to the machine. The second test house insists
that the cordage must be H05VVF. Consequentely, I would like to know the
difference in requirements between the US SJT cordage and European H05VVF.

RE: ISN or Current probe method on telecommunication ports?

2001-04-24 Thread Fleury, Bill
Richard,

For shielded ports/cables the method used should be the current clamp method
as described in C.1.2 of Annex C, EN 55022:1998. The ISN is used for
unshielded ports/cables. We had the same problem of failing conducted
emissions when we used an ISN. When you put a current clamp on a shielded
cable you are seeing the data return currents on the shield. Connecting the
shield to earth through a 150 ohm resistor as specified in C.1.2 compensates
for that. At least that is my understanding; maybe others have more insight
into this.

Subject: ISN or Current probe method on telecommunication ports?

Dear Colleague,

Does anybody have done any conducted emission test on telecommunication
ports per EN55022 1998 standard requirement?

Currently, we have performed a conducted emission test of our product on the
shielded telecom port by using ISN and current probe methods, and the
results of both tests are totally different.

With ISN method, the EUT failed the conducted emission on shielded telecom
port by 20 dB. With current probe method, our product passed the conducted
test with good margin.

We don't know what is the theory behind the ISN and Current probe methods?
Can anybody explain to us or advise what we need to do to pass the conducted
emission test? Can the test lab accept the current probe method test data or
we have to meet both limits of voltage and current requirements that listed
in table 4 of CISPR. 22 1997 standard?

Our product used all shielded cables on telecom ports. Per Clause 9.5.3.3
9.5.3.4 of CISPR. 22 1997, both methods are allowed for telecom port
testing.

Any suggestions or feedback will be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

RE: FCC labels

2001-03-14 Thread Fleury, Bill
All,

Correct me if I'm reading too much into this but I believe that if you read
far enough in 15.19 it says that if the device is too small to include the
wording that you can simply put the statement in the users manual.

Steve and All,

I would assume that if your unit is small enough so as not to be able to
have all the wording, you could get an authorization from the FCC. Please
confirm.

E1 cable, which is 26 AWG, is 120 0hms and T1 is 100 ohms. Impedance will
vary depending on things such as; shielding, wire gauge, twists/ft, etc.

compactPCI bus

2000-09-19 Thread Fleury, Bill
Judging from the number of responses (0) I got to my question about EMI
problems from compactPCI backplanes I am assumiong that either no one uses
cPCI backplanes or I'm the only one that has experienced problems when
testing in this environment. I didn't think that ever happened in this
group. I'll repost this just in case some of you didn't get the last one.

This is a question regarding systems which use CompactPCI bus architecture.
On a cPCI backplane the PCI clock is routed to every slot on the backplane
with up to 7 peripheral slots possible on a normal backplane. My question is
this: With the cPCI specification calling out specific trace lengths for
clock traces on both the backplane itself and on peripheral cards, have
other people experienced any unique EMI problems in trying to meet the
design constraints associated with this synchronous bus; especially where
there are unpopulated slots on the backplane?

Please feel free to respond privately if the question is unclear. I wasn't
sure if it was worded properly.

Thanks,

Bill Fleury
