Doesn't look gone to me:

Pretty sure one of the most popular Open Source OS's isn't going to go away
any time soon.

Ubuntu, BTW, is based on Debian.

Did you copy your working hal and ini files to the new system
and launch linuxcnc using your working files?

Re: [Emc-users] single board computer

2014-11-23 Thread Ralph Stirling
Aram,

LinuxCNC will never run without an OS. Modern single
board computers like the BeagleBoneBlack run full OS's
like Ubuntu and Debian. LinuxCNC/Machinekit run on
top of the OS, along with a real-time extension.

The BBB version of LinuxCNC works fine for driving
stepper motors, but cannot yet handle closed-loop
servo systems very well, as encoder pulse counting is
too slow. Eventually there should be Mesa or Pico type
hardware add-ons that offload encoder pulse counting
to make servo control possible. I have to emphasize
that Machinekit is still very "bleeding edge", and you
would be well advised to stick with x86 motherboards
and straight LinuxCNC for another year for your machine
projects.

single board always will be there.
can single board comp. run closed loop- ac-servo motors?
can single board comp. use existing hardware -boards- etc?

how far in the future linuxcnc on single board computer. (closed loop +
servo motor+ use existing board) month or years away?

i learned about single board computer on local --meetup-- group where
enthusiast helping eachother to learn to program small boards ardinary etc
and single board computer. i think that major manufacturer of single board
computer -texas instrument. technology getting more powerful with every
moth/weeks and their cost is good. i think, because price of single board
computer is ok than hardware manufacturer for linuxcnc may very well
incorporate single board computer with there hardware and offer finish
working controller.
will it make linuxcnc more robust system for final user/machine shop?

2014-11-23 Thread a k
hi
i try and got same problem with live CD no installation--
even without any installation.
than i try 2.5.4 and total different result.
Problem is that when i click F1 - off e-stop, i should be able to pick axis
-- X Y Z, able to type in in MDI , AND after i push F2 machine power up and
after i click on Y axis jog - (any increment ) tham machine should move.
that is how 2.5.4 works on my computer.
And on my computer for 2.6.4 nothig is same.
in live CD - F1 - e-stop off ,and i can no pick axis X Y Z they are frozen
not pickable, and i can open MDI but i CAN NOT type there anything.

Yesterday i did see that 2.6.5 -- already there. i copy it and try it. same
result as with 2.6.4-- no difference.

it can not be that only i have this problem. maybe not many try 2.6.5
why do i have this problem?

Because, since I have been using LCNC, starting at about 2.0.0 it has
always been a 2 step process to enable the machinery.

You have always had to press F1 once and F2 once, F1 gets it out of its
default e-stop startup, but it then takes an F2 press to actually enable
the machine.

Be aware that many modern keyboards now default to an Fkey disabled state
at powerup. You can identify those keyboards by their having a key or
button labeled F, which when pressed, will enable the Fkeys until the next
power up, or they can be disabled again by a second tap on the F key.

Not here. This makes me ask what keyboard emulation you are using?

Its within the realm of possible that the wrong keyboard translation is
doing something it should not be done, but that is just a SWAG on my part.

I believe the site where you downloaded the disk image from should have a
downloadable md5sum or possibly an sha1sum and doing the same sum
operation on your disk would prove its integrity.

Re: [Emc-users] 2.6.4---2.5.4

2014-11-23 Thread John Prentice (FS)
Aram

See below

Problem is that when i click F1 - off e-stop, i should be able to pick axis
-- X Y Z, able to type in in MDI , AND after i push F2 machine power up and
after i click on Y axis jog - (any increment ) tham machine should move.
that is how 2.5.4 works on my computer.
And on my computer for 2.6.4 nothig is same.
in live CD - F1 - e-stop off ,and i can no pick axis X Y Z they are frozen
not pickable, and i can open MDI but i CAN NOT type there anything.
--

I do not know what you mean by "pick axis -- X, Y, Z" but your workflow with
f1 and f2 is unusual.

Most people clear the Reset/Estop (f1) and the immediately "Power up the
control" (f2). Then you can Home, issue MDI commands, keyboard jog etc.
Attempting anything before Power Up (f2) is not expected to work - perhaps
some things did with 2.5.4 and this is the confusion. I don't have a setup
to try this at present.

2.6.4 works fine for me (using the f1, f2 workflow described above).

Re: [Emc-users] single board computer

2014-11-23 Thread Ralph Stirling
It is very likely that your friends were showing you a BeagleBone
or BeagleBoneBlack sbc, which uses a TI processor, running some
version of Linux. The ARM processors used on these inexpensive
boards are very good for low-power, low-cost applications, but still
lag behind the performance possible with the larger x86 or amd64
motherboards. Reliability of fanless, solid-state disk computers
should be excellent, regardless of whether they use ARM or traditional
processors.

i learned about single board computer on local --meetup-- group where
enthusiast helping eachother to learn to program small boards ardinary etc
and single board computer. i think that major manufacturer of single board
computer -texas instrument. technology getting more powerful with every
moth/weeks and their cost is good. i think, because price of single board
computer is ok than hardware manufacturer for linuxcnc may very well
incorporate single board computer with there hardware and offer finish
working controller.
will it make linuxcnc more robust system for final user/machine shop?

2014-11-23 Thread a k
i did move 5i20 to the next PCI port and 2.6.5 work ok.
i just do not know what cause to 2.6.5 to start to work ok?
maybe because it use quantum mechanic -- nothing happen for sure, it only
has high probability that it will happen.

You did not answer my question, which was:

Did you copy your original working configuration files from your workin
machine to the new 2.6.4 installation?

It really depends on your application. If you want to control a 10.000$ CNC
mill then the price of the fan-less computer is comparable low and you are
probably better with such a system.

For a small 500-1000$ CNC machine a SoC might be better because of the price
and size of device.

I should try Ubuntu on that D525MW instead of Debian... who knows.

I did many things.
first i open Hal and type everything in manually.
when it did not work i reload 2.6.4 and type all my changes again.
third time i copy my changes alteration to HAL to file and that just copy
past them to do it faster.
but now i can see that that 2.6.5 works i will do it again and i will type
everything manually

If a PCI card is not detected, it very often is because either the contact
fingers or slot contacts are dirty (this is especiall true of slota on a
motherboard that have been unused for a long time)

I find the cleaning the PCI card and slot with 99% Isopropyl alcohol often
fixes the problem. To clean the slot I dip a piece of card stock into the
alcohol and insert/remove it several times

All new machine tool do not have any fan to cool down processor. They use
regular refrigerator unit to cool down whole system. Fan is old and for
desktop computer -simple - and it will bring dust and a lot of it in short
period of time.
Just need a rifrigerator and place single board computer- whole system
inside.

Thank you. I looked at your pdfs. I also installed the latest LinuxCNC (
2.6 with Wheezy) on a PC and loaded Eagle 7, so I can open Eagle files
now. It took a while to figure out Git Hub (I normally use Bitbucket)
and downloaded your files. There really isn't that much magic in the
hardware, except maybe the current feedback/limit bit. It seems the
magic is in the software. I'm looking forward to watching your progress.

Re: [Emc-users] Motor Resolvers

2014-11-23 Thread el cringo
Hi,
there is no current feedback yet and the over current protection is
copied from the UHU servo controller (http://www.uhu-servo.de/).
The next version will have a small cpu for this stuff (cheaper, neads
less space and is far more flexible).
We are planning to include a current prediction in software based an our
motor simulator. Our current pid component does it with an open loop PD
controller.
But the main problem is the noise amplification in position derivation
for velocity feedback.
Therefor the main development is currently done in realtime filter
algorithems without too much phase shift. We have plenty of calculation
power, so we can even experiment with stuff like total variation
denoising or polynomial fit at 5kHz (our current pid freqency, resolver
positions come in at 20kHz).
Our hal like framework and the terminal realy speeds testing up, as we
are able to rewire and reconfigure the hole system on the fly and get
instant feedback.

There is no magic in the power stage, comes right from the iramx datasheet.
At the moment there is no current feedback to the MCU, only a hardware limit.
We give the motor a Voltage, which results in a current.
As we know how fast the motor is, we can compensate for induction.
The part that took us a while to figure out was the resolver driving hardware.
I took a lot of breadboarding and simulation in LTspice, which are included in
the git.
in fact we are still working on noise issues with resolver feedback.
The speed derived from the position amplifies the ADC noise, resulting in
jittering output.
It is not enough to move anything mechanical connected to the motor, but the
current makes an irritating noise.
A simple (software)lowpass is shifting the phase, resulting in oscillation.

Re: [Emc-users] Limit Switches - 7i76

2014-11-23 Thread John Alexander Stewart
It's no problem, just tie them as the plans say (+field voltage, IIRC) and
set the correct "level" so that they trigger as expected.

I understand that the NC switches are "better" as they will open if there's
a wiring issue, but that's a minor item.

Re: [Emc-users] Limit Switches - 7i76

2014-11-23 Thread John Alexander Stewart
Whoops - by "correct level" I mean, either use the signal as given, or use
the signal as "-not" to use it inverted. My hal files are not nearby, so I
can't tell you which version I used on my NC switches.

If you use pncconf, you'll be able to set whether the signal is inverted or
not. If you get it wrong, LinuxCNC will give you an error on startup,
saying that the limit switch on axis [0-n] is set.

Hi Nico
This was the part that confused me the most. I did compile the terminal
but dont know how to use your HAL like framework. Would you mind giving
some pointers please. I have ordered my STM board already and I want to
really partake in testing your work.
