Re: [Emc-users] Touch screen for LinuxCNC

2021-06-01 Thread Frank Tkalcevic
The version of touchy I'm running doesn't have the 3d preview. I'm using
it on a lathe and typically run wizards, so I don't miss the preview.

I have an MGP type jog wheel and some buttons mounted around the frame,
connected via a homemade USB HID controller. The jog wheel and buttons are
wired up like they were a pendant.

Does Touchy now have the 3D preview that Jon mentioned? Are you using a
rotary MPG type knob for it? Back when I was using MACH3 I bought a MODIO
which has a 100 PPR encoder and buttons and uses MODBUS to talk to MACH3.

I think there's a driver for it under LinuxCNC. Again something like that
with buttons along a standard monitor with the buttons taking the place of
the touch screen inputs. Whether it be ModBus or CAN with CANopen then
becomes a moot point.Still just 4 wires for power, ground and coms up
to the display.

It shouldn't matter. On a lathe using X and Z the symbols are I and K.

The side brackets are removable and it has vesa mounting holes on the back.
I use it with a PC - HDMI and USB connection. I use it with touchy.

If I wanted to set up a Pi4 with LinuxCNC and a touch screen is there any
particular one that jumps out as the best solution?

And with an LCD display/touch screen other than 'axis' what is a more usable
screen?

You may want to use "touchy" with a touch screen, it is
designed for that.
You need a red and a green button and a jog dial, too. With
that, you can
pretty much control the system with no keyboard at all. The
jog dial can be used to scroll through menus like a scroll
wheel on a mouse. The reason I did not like it is because
there was no 3D preview of the G-code program. That has
been very helpful when setting up and to verify where
the origin is, and that you have loaded the right program.
I think touchy now has a 3D preview tab as well.

Re: [Emc-users] Touch screen for LinuxCNC

2021-06-01 Thread John Dammeyer
Personally I like the tactile feedback of a button that moves. But moving from
buttons over to a mouse to then select entries is tedious so I can see either a
number of buttons or a touch screen for that sort of thing.

For the same reason I really detest those interfaces based on Arduino's that,
due to limited I/O use a rotary knob and button to select from all sorts of
menus. Or worse test enter each digit one at a time using the rotary knob.
Shudder

Way back HP had the right idea with what they called soft keys. A row of
mechanical buttons along the edges of the screen to select options displayed
beside the button. My Tek scope has those and the stupid rotary knobs.
Invariably since they have two of those I tend to choose the wrong one first.

But to design such a user screen for LinuxCNC implies you also have to provide
the buttons (and maybe a knob). Easy to do with CANopen or ModBus or if you
have one of the high i/o count MESA boards but then you are also running a
bundle of wires up rather than a network cable.

Thanks for the feedback.

I favor the Touchy interface. You will need jog buttons and any other
button that could possibly cause machine motion. Touchy was written to not
allow machine motion from the touchscreen.

I have used these before. The USB version just works out of the box with
every Linux distribution I have tried. In fact they work before Linux is
booted up on most of them. The serial ones work just fine but you need the

Re: [Emc-users] Touch screen for LinuxCNC

2021-06-01 Thread John Dammeyer
I have an older wired Pendant like this one.
https://www.amazon.ca/Wireless-Mach3-Pendant-Handwheel-Mac-Mach/dp/B00SH0V1P8

I waffle back and forth between keyboard operations and the pendant. I'm not
sure how useful the touch screen would be relative to a pendant and keyboard.
At some point typing in G-Code end up being done.

Would the common operations that are on the touch screen be any more difficult
if instead there was a panel of buttons right beside the screen? Like the jog
buttons or is it easiest right on the display?

Re: [Emc-users] Drilling feed rates.

2021-06-01 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
My experience programming a Fanuc 5T control starting in 1979 taught me the
IK calculation was VERY critical. If the IK values caused the control
calculated radius to be longer than the axis position commands the control
would choke on the G02/G03 line. The control would handle the xxx.
format commands. If the IK values would yield xxx.1 (.0001 or more
longer than the control calculated radius the axis positions calculated it
would error. I would always trig the value of the third leg using the
radius I was programming and one of the I or K values to calculate the
other I or K value. I would then use the calculated value without any
rounding. Sometimes I would still get an error. I would then subtract .0001
from the calculated leg and it always worked. That was my biggest hurdle to
programming the 5T control. Once I figured that out the rest was a breeze.
The one value at a time display was no help in figuring out the problem.
I don't know if the LinuxCNC protocol is the same.

If I wanted to set up a Pi4 with LinuxCNC and a touch screen is there any
particular one that jumps out as the best solution?

And with an LCD display/touch screen other than 'axis' what is a more usable
screen?

That's the one. I was getting them for 189/199usd before the chip shortage.

I use gmoccapy on my lathe and alternate between gmoccapy and probe basic
on my router. Now that dragon has a 1920 option, I may try that as well. I
tinker, so I'm forever trying new stuff.

Yikes. Only number that came up was the VT229H from ASUS.

On sale for a few days for $357.99 w/o PST/GST taxes or a nice even $401 Cdn.

What are you using for the display software?
[DISPLAY]
DISPLAY = axis

Re: [Emc-users] Drilling feed rates.

2021-06-01 Thread John Dammeyer
I haven't got a spindle encoder mounted yet nor switched to step/dir for it.
Just PWM to 0V..10V from cheap far east module. Only goes down to about 100
RPM.

Looking forward to mounting encoder so I can try power tapping.

This came with AlibreCAD 'Expert' subscription back in 2007. Looks like it's
still available for download if one downloads a trial version of BobCAD.
https://www.machinist-toolbox.com/

My plan at the software end was to eventually create something like this but
written in Lazarus (Free Pascal) which means it would run on PCs with WIN or
Linux and Macs (or even the Pi or Beagle with MachineKit). So far I've only
written the hole boring utility for which I believe I used Jon's C code
translated to Pascal.

The only issue with this small app is that LinuxCNC chokes on the I/J G-Code
with radius not equal error. Haven't had a chance to look into that yet. The
R approach does work. Either can be selected from the Options menu.
