i've once heared you could do that in gnome. would be awesome if it was
possible.

I had exactly the same problem with Eterm. I also tried it under DR16

You can also set the gconf key

/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop

to false using gconf-editor or the following command:

gconftool-2 /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop -t bool -s false

that's weird - it's possible e set up an event feedback loop (it does somethng
that generates an event that causes e to do that thing again that generates an
event... and so on) but what - i don't know. i havne't seen this. this kind of
stuff i can't debug without help. ir could be urxvt or eterm not liking being
in a utf8 encoded locale and doing x operations eating up cpu on the x side.
i'm not sure really.

I CVS'ed yesterday and my enlightenment_remote does not have a 'zone-*'

anyway, will there be any window placement options (under mouse for
example) in e17?

[e-users] Switching To Enlightenment

2005-08-25 Thread David P. Donahue
I originally used Enlightenment back in school (approximately 5 years
ago) and was always happy with it. But, as I used Linux more and more
at home (Slackware mostly, now running Slackware 10.0 on most machines),
I generally stuck with KDE. Recently, however, I've been meaning to go
back to Enlightenment (especially anticipating what looks like a
fantastic product in DR17).

First and foremost, how will this affect certain applications that were
built specifically with KDE in mind (K3B, for example)? I'm pretty much
a newbie when it comes to the various libraries in Linux, but is there
anything special I'll need to do to accomodate WM-specific applications?

Second, what solutions exist for VNC-style access to the local console
display on Enlightenment? In KDE, I use krfb, which allows me to VNC to
my local display instead of a new virtual display. Can something
similar be accomplished in Enlightenment? My ideal functionality would
be something akin to the single-user Terminal Server in WinXP Pro, in
that I can connect to the display remotely _and_ it gets locked locally
(currently, with krfb, prying eyes can sit in front of my console and
watch everything I do, if they were so inclined).

Finally, can anyone point me to some specific resources for
configuring/tweaking/getting the most out of Enlightenment? Tips and
tricks, that sort of thing. I'm finding a lot via Google, but if anyone
has any specific suggestions I'd love to hear them. I'm especially
interested in useful applications and add-ons, such as Engage.

Any help/advice you can offer would be much appreciated, thank you.

David P. Donahue

Just browsing the User Guide there now (very concise, I must say). I
hadn't seen that page until Mike Russo's reply to the "Dependencies"
email on this list linked to it a couple hours ago. I figure I'm going
to set up a test machine and try different versions of E before I commit
to a specific one on my main machine. Whatever version comes on my
Slackware disc, the latest stable release, the latest CVS of E17 (is
there a specific snapshot that would be best?), etc.

That page will certainly be helpful for E17, and I just found a link to
eDox that will hopefully be as helpful or more so for E16, but my first
two questions still remain. Those were the ones about WM-specific
applications (K3B, for example) and about remote access to the console
display.

It shouldn't. I know that K3B and Konqueror work fine in DR17 for me as
well as numerous Gnome Apps (provided you have all there dependencies
installed). The only one I had trouble with was Amarok, but that's not
yet stable, and it wast still masked in portage, so I don't think that
was's Enlightenment's fault.

This is because e17 only has control over what is rendered outsite of

[e-users] The Monitormodule consumes 99% of the CPU

2005-08-25 Thread Der Lockruf des Kaos
Hi all,

My Monitor Module from E17 is consuming all CPU Time of one of my CPU's.
So i have still one CPU to work but that's not the Intension. :)

I restartet E17 but that helped nothing.
I've unloaded Modules Step by Step and the CPU got freed, when i unloaded the
Monitor Module.
I loaded it again an the Load was there again.
I changed the Intervall of the not existing WLAN Part of the Module to 60s and
the CPU was free again.

Now my Questions:
Can i disable completely the WLAN Part of the Module per Config or similar?
I don't have a WLAN Card in my Computer.
And the Pictures take away some Space on the Desktop and displaying nothing.

My current Enlightenment is 10 Minutes old, fresh from CVS.

Greets,
Christian

[e-users] theme cursors

2005-08-25 Thread Ron Lau
Hi.

The only irk I ever had with e (16 and 17) is that the damn pointer is
so small I have a hard time finding it.

I edje_decc'd the blue-eyed theme. What can I do to double (or
quadruple) the size of the pointer?

Somebody (sorry i don't remember his name) gave me a cursor theme made
from e17' default cursor, but using it instead of ALL cursors, so you'll
have the same cursor over a link, on anything else

It's the best way i found to have a regular theme, even if it's not
really easy to use ...

http://ftp.spider-serv.net/tweak/curseurs/e17.tar.gz

to install, try the following :
mv e17.tar.gz ~/.icons
cd ~/.icons
tar xvzf e17.tar.gz
mv default default_old
ln -s Enlightenment default

Then, you'd better restart X (applications launched after this should
use those cursors, but not applications launched before)

Or ... wait somebody write a full mouse-cursors theme based on e17, or
write it yourself, but as it's not e17's job, don't wait anything from
e17' developpers

Hello everyone, this is my first newsgroup posting. Is there a way to
make individual windows ignore xinerama settings? For example, say you
had a wide-screen monitor, and were using the fake xinerama settings to
divide it in half. However, you want to be able to watch movies
covering the full width of the screen (or on the fly go make the window
recognize xinerama). Can this be done?

Thanks,
Jacob

PS I'm interesting in programming in EFL, but have very little C
experience. Would you folks have any suggestions on where to begin?
Thanks!

As long as you have all the libraries (gtk,qt etc), all your gnome/kde
applications
will work. The desktop you actually use (gnome/kde/fluxbox/enlightenment)
doesn't
really affect the running of an application, just how it handles it on the
display.

Sounds like xvnc.

Finally, can anyone point me to some specific resources for
configuring/tweaking/getting the most out of Enlightenment? Tips and
tricks, that sort of thing. I'm finding a lot via Google, but if anyone
has any specific suggestions I'd love to hear them. I'm especially
interested in useful applications and add-ons, such as Engage.

http://get-e.org/ has alot of documentation.

Any help/advice you can offer would be much appreciated, thank you.

Precisely what I'd hoped. I figure I'll still have to test each

everything should be in place.

Someone earlier replied to me and not the list with that link. Looks
way more functional than the krfb I've been using, and the part at

interesting as an extra console security measure, deterring those who
are curious, but not malicious.

http://get-e.org/ has alot of documentation.

All the E17 info I could want to get started seems to be right there.
And, though I haven't looked at it yet, I'm under the impression that
eDox covers E16 pretty well.

Turns out the machine I was going to use for testing won't post, so I
may have to put off this switch for a while anyway. Maybe I can
convince my wife to let me put Slackware on a second drive in her

In any event, it looks like I've got plenty to get me started from the

the applications (sometimes) set their own cursors - the wm cant do anything
about this (well in theory it could with hackery but that would break a lot of
stuff - it shouldnt and wont). you will need to deal with the cursor usign
xcursor themes. e does its own cursor thing as well - we believe doing it our
way is better :) (the cursor is just another canvas with an edje object in it -
thus it animates and scale and so on just like everything else in e) :)

currently - no. this though is more a matter for having an option as to how to
do fullscreen/maximise policy - should it use a subset of the screen (making
gadgets and panels etc. visible), the entire screen, or across all screens.
there's work to be done there yet. i see your point and it's valid and worht

It's trying to be friendly and read everything for you! :) seriously - e has
its own dns lookup code because gethostbyname is a blocking call. this is
actually only used if making remote connections, but it has to
parse /etc/resolve.conf to know what to do. this means ecore_con is then
capable of doing nslookups asynchronously - not holding the process hostage to
waiting for a dns lookup timeout or reply. it always parses this data wehn
starting up the connections subsystem (ecore_con) but it doesnt mean its making
remote connections.

This is correct. Entrance will automatically create a user file for you

hello,

i'm having the same problem. so i
edited /usr/share/entrance/build_config.sh to add e17 instead of kde.
then i ran the script, i removed /etc/entrance_config.db, but at the
end, nothing changes. when i login i still see kde and no e17

greetz,
