You can not go 'back'. Installing sp4 makes certain irreversible schema
changes. I imagine that is why Anthony mentioned 'recent exchange
server'.

RE: Cannot delete Empty ABV's

2002-07-17 Thread Drewery, Anthony

Sorry, my message wasn't well written. Still only on my first cup of coffee.
Here's what I did:

We already have numerous Exchange servers in our org. We also had ABVs that
I couldn't modify as all servers were SP4. When I had a requirement to build
a new server and add it to our org I built it to SP3. Then, via the admin
console on the SP3 server I added explicit permissions to the ABVs. I then
upgraded it to SP4. The problem was sorted.

If you don't have any imminent plans to add a new server to your org then
maybe do the above procedure with a temporary box of some description. After
you've added the permissions you can then uninstall Exchange from the temp
box and remove it from your org.

There is also another fix which I found on Google that requires you to stop
the Exchange services replace a file with one from the SP3 CD, restart the
services, add the permissions, then revert to the original file. I wouldn't
recommend this on a production server.

Hope this helps,

Ant.

I don't see how anyone could call themselves an email system administrator
if they can't do this. It scares me that I might be exposing my poor email
servers to people who think this is new news...

RE: CLEVER SPAM EMAIL

2002-07-17 Thread East, Bill

And yet, Baldric^WRobert, there are administrators out there who would not
recognize a clever spam email if it danced up and down in front of them
singing "Clever Spam Emails are Here Again."

Which is (partially) why SMTP has continued to work, since it was designed
to run without too much interference from the administrators; it is also why
the likes of use continue to find employment, since when it does break it is
usually a doozy.

Storage Limits Warning

2002-07-17 Thread DOT

I have a user that received more than 30 storage limit warnings every 15
minutes for about 3 hours. Is there a way to have the storage limit warning
fire once and not ongoing then stop their ability to send email or whatever
we determine appropriate until they've resolved the issue?

I'm hesistant to adjust the storage limits warning in the Information Store
Site Configuration, since I've never actually seen anyone other than this
user hit their storage limits, and I don't want to compromise the way this
seems to work for other users.

We are currently using Exchange 5.5, sp4.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Au contraire. When users travel to branch offices, using OWA across the

the box is exposed to the Internet, even if it's NAT'ed behind a
firewall? The idea is to use this via the Internet, not an Intranet.
Thanks!

I don't think there are any security benefits unless you're going to
expose it to the Internet.

We are looking to configure OWA for use with our lone Exchange 2000
server (SP2). Are there any security benefits to configuring this on a
different machine than the Exchange server? Also, do we need to have
the Enterprise Edition of Exchange 2000 and configure it as a front-end
server to do this?

Thanks!

check the messageclass of the item.

objcontactitem(i).MessageClass
should be either "IPM.Contact" or "IPM.DistList"

Anyone seen this?

You can change the limits on an individual user in the properties of the
mailbox. Just de-select Use information store defaults and change it to what
ever limit needed.

Clarify Thinking on Age Limits, please

2002-07-17 Thread Bendall, Paul

I am after some clarification of my understanding. Firstly we are talking
Exchange 5.5 SP4. What I want to achieve is to delete items in a public
folder once they have become too old. I assume I can select the public
folder in question and change the value of "Age limit for replicas (days)"
to the period I want to hold on to the message in the PF. The age limit of
the message is determined by the MAPI property "Last Modified Time". What I
want to check is what happens next, the age limit for the message expires so
the message is marked for deletion, am I right in thinking that it is then
tombstoned, so the deletion of the object can be replicated. The tombstone
period by default will hold the message for 180 days before it is finally
removed from the database. Where does deleted item retention start on this
process is it when it was first deleted or at the end of the tombstone
period?

Is my thinking correct or am I way off the mark?

TIA

Paul

check the messageclass of the item.

objcontactitem(i).MessageClass

OWA setup problems

2002-07-17 Thread Jerry Jones

I know its naive of me to believe everything I have read that OWA on
exchange 2000 and iis 5.0 should just work. Well I have a test server
running just that with sp2 and all other updates as of yesterday. When I
use a web browser to goto \\servername\exchange or \\server_ip\exchange I
get a box to enter user name password and domain. At first I could enter
the name of a person with a mailbox on the server and just get Page cannot
be displayed. Now it does not seem to want to authenticate anyone. I enter
the password 3 times and then get not autherized. I have created several
test accounts with mailboxes and they are enabled for web. This is all on
the internal network. I am not crossing any routers or firewalls at all.
For that matter all computers are on the same hub. I should add that test
workstations logged on as various users can send e-mail back and forth via
outlook. So exchange seems to be working fine otherwise.
Any ideas?

RE: Exchange 5.5 (sp4) to E2K upgrade

2002-07-17 Thread Ken Cornetet

I think this is the general route I'd take...

1. Buy new server
2. Install NT4 as a BDC of your current domain
3. Promote new server to PDC (which will simultaneously demote the old PDC).
4. Install win2k server on new server, converting domain to mixed mode AD
5. Install ADC, do forestprep and domain prep
6. Install E2K on new server
7. Create ADC connection agreements
8. Configure OWA on E2K server
9. Document public folder and mailbox security
10. Move mailboxes & public folders from old MSX55 server to E2K server
11. Move DHCP to new server
12. Retire old servers (paying special attention to first server in site
issues for the MSX5.5 server)
13. Take AD native
14. Convert the universal distribution groups (your old DLs) to universal
security groups.
15. Re-do public folder and mailbox permissions.

This is, of course, all theory (except steps 1 thru 4, which I've done in
test a hundred times and in production twice).

You may want to look at Microsoft's Small Business Server 2000, which gives
you E2K server, Exchange 2000, ISA, and SQL Server for very cheap (with some
limitations that shouldn't matter for 16 users)

Oh, and if you do go SBS2000, it can't install directly over NT4. You'll
need to get an eval copy of 2K server, install it, then install SBS.

Subject: Exchange 5.5 (sp4) to E2K upgrade

Can anyone of you who have been thru' this nightmare help me.

Here is the scenario.

I have a NT 4.0 (SP6a) Domain with one PDC and two BDCs as follows:

PDC = File and Print Server

BDC = Exchange Server 5.5 sp 4

BDC = DHCP server and IIS 4.0 for OWA

Number of users: 12
Number of groups: 6

How should i bring this setup to the 2000 version.

I am more concerned about the Exchange public folder and databases.

Can i move the mdbdata and dir.edb to another server, Install E2K from
scratch and then move the MDBDATA and DIR.EDB back.

Can i even install a new W2K from ground up and restore all the users and
groups. Would this even work?

The more i read about the upgrade process from the microsoft site, the more
confusing it gets.

any pointers will be very helpful and appreciated.

thanks

RE: OWA setup problems

2002-07-17 Thread Andy Grafton

Jerry first is replication. Depending on the size of your network and
your patience this can be a problem.

Have you tried domain/user or domain\user or [EMAIL PROTECTED] on the
login?

One thing I was not aware of is that for a mailbox to be displayed, the
user has to have an email address corresponding the AD domain name in
their properties (recipient policy might be at fault here).

For example, if your AD domain is network.abc but your mail addresses
are company.com then Exchange will work fine with that person having a
single address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] For OWA to work, they also have
to have the SMTP address [EMAIL PROTECTED]

All the best,

Andy

Yeah, tried that variation to log in domain/username and domain\username.
And the AD domain is domain.com and the addresses are [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I know that all services are running. I can browse to \\servername and get
the normal IIS webpage just cant get the \\sername\exchange. This is a
test network entirely as I am new to this and it been demanded that once I
finish my migrations that OWA be implemented. I would not think that I
would have this much trouble getting this to work on the local test
network. I was told that there was a recent security update that broke OWA
so you had to find a certain setting and recheck it. But they could not
tell me what that was. Is this right?

OWA 2000 - couple q's

2002-07-17 Thread Jesse Rink

Environment:
(1) Exchange 2000 server running on my internal network with OWA

I want users from the internet to be able to access my OWA server by
entering in the URL of "outlook.mydomain.com" rather than
"myserver.mydomain.com/exchange". This is how I had it configured when I
was running Exchange 5.5 in the past. Is there any problem changing the
Default Web Site properties in IIS on the Exchange 2000 server to redirect
to the /exchange directory? It's just that my users have been used to
accessing the "outlook.mydomain.com" URL for so long now, adjusting to a
new URL would be problematic.

Second, when I had OWA running under my Exchange 5.5 organization, I had
SSL installed on the OWA box. I would like to take my Verisign
certificate and move it to my new OWA 2000 server. Do I apply the
certificate to the Default Web Site? Any problem I should know about with
this?

Thanks.

Well, to be fair there are plenty of folks on this list for whom e-mail
administration (and even IT work in General) is not their full time job. It
would (and does) scare me if someone who gets paid to administer an e-mail
server exclusively hasn't read them. But even for the part time
administrator, there's real value in reading the RFCs and playing around
with sending an e-mail via telnet to your boss which appears to come from
Bill Clinton.

RE: OWA Setup on a different machine on XCH2000 SP2

2002-07-17 Thread Chris Scharff

You could investigate implementing ISA or an e-gap solution to improve
security... ISA has broader functionality which might also be useful to the
organization.

RE: OWA Setup on a different machine on XCH2000 SP2

2002-07-17 Thread Ken Cornetet

There's another option that should work here: Microsoft ISA server in the
DMZ forwarding http and https to the internal Exchange server.

I've never tried this, but it was what our Microsoft tech guy recommended
for putting OWA2K on the Internet. If we can talk our Internet hosting
service into this, it's the path we'll probably take.

I suppose Apache on (insert your favorite platform here) would work as well,
but again, I've never tried it.

Thanks to all who replied!

Bottom line is we will be using just the OWA on the lone Exchange Server
on the LAN (not in the DMZ). I'm still a little uncomfortable allowing
traffic from the Internet onto the server, but it seems the best of all
"evils" so to speak. There's also the fact that the customer would not
be too happy shelling out the $$ for the Enterprise edition.

In answer to your question, Tony, yes you need the Enterprise Edition to
use a Front-End Server (your OWA server).

I am designing this exact system, but my plan is to use a front end
exchange server on the intranet and a back-end OWA web server on the
internet segmented in a DMZ. If this box does get compromised I don't
want it having free access to the rest of my intranet.

Do I have to have Enterprise edition Exch2k to have my OWA on a separate
server?

The advantage of deploying a front-end server is that your mailbox
server isn't touched directly by an Internet user. That is, you can
configure your firewall to allow HTTPS only to the OWA server. It's not
a huge security benefit, in my opinion, but it might make you sleep
better. I agree with leaving the front-end server in the intranet and
allowing HTTPS (SSL) only from the Internet.

Just curious - isn't the fact that OWA is being used at all mean that
the box is exposed to the Internet, even if it's NAT'ed behind a

We are looking to configure OWA for use with our lone Exchange 2000
server (SP2). Are there any security benefits to configuring this on a
different machine than the Exchange server? Also, do we need to have
the Enterprise Edition of Exchange 2000 and configure it as a front-end
server to do this?

Thanks!

Nope. This is a fresh install of server and exchange on a test network and
domain. Trying to get it to work this way before I make it happen on the

RE: OWA setup problems

2002-07-17 Thread Ken Cornetet

On your E2K server, use Explorer to look at the M: drive [1]. The
subdirectory there reflects your default recipient policy SMTP address. To
use OWA, a user MUST have an SMTP address corresponding to this address.

For example, if your default recipient policy has an SMTP address of
@telemanager.com, your users have to have an address of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in order to use OWA.

[1] The M: drive doesn't have anything to do with the problem. It's just a
fast way to see what IIS thinks is the default SMTP address.

Subject: OWA setup problems

Any ideas?

I'd argue that the most valuable employees are those who understand the
technological issues as well as the driving business needs. There's
something to be said for an employee who implements a new solution which
solves a problem and adds to the companies bottom line through increased
productivity or reduced cost. If employee a proposes a solution which solves
the problem using the resources at hand and employee b proposes a solution
which costs 5k, but saves 10k can one unequivocally say that a is more
valuable than b?

True. But there are certain minimums which time and experience have shown to
be inadequate. Looking specifically at PST files on file shares could
one store the data there? Yes. Savings in this example: The cost of an
upgrade to an Exchange enterprise CAL. Next year when a court order for
e-mail document discovery is received, that Exchange enterprise CAL cost is
likely going to pale in comparison to the cost required to grep PST files
for relavent documents.

> To go out and spend money to get a job done is simple. To get it done

An apples and oranges comparison. Any solution, whether it is 'free' or
requires a capital expenditure must first be subjected to thought and
planning.

Without implementing an AV solution or upgrading clients to a version of
Outlook which can block those file types, the ability to perform the actions
you describe cannot be achieved. Both can potentially require a capital
expenditure.

> It is our duty to get the job done while keeping expenses low. All while

I'd contend it is our duty to understand the business needs of our
organization and to propose and implement solutions which best meet the
needs of our customers (from both a financial and productivity standpoint).
I have no qualms about proposing implementing a multi-million dollar
solution or a $500 solution for a customer if the solution benefits the
company. Sure, either proposal might get put off or rejected but there are
times that a solution is worth fighting for (hence my 4 requests for AV
software in a 12 month period).

Doing it as cheaply as possible or spending money when you have it available
to spend are both stupid philosophies in and of themselves.

RE: Exchange Utility?

2002-07-17 Thread IRELAND,MIKE (HP-Corvallis,ex1)

Import the Exchange tracking logs into a database and analyze them. You
will be amazed at the interesting data than can be harvested in the tracking
logs, particularly in a large organization. If you have a database person
at your disposal, they will have a field day with them. Even with little to
no database experience, you can make some nice reports with Access. There
are a couple of KB articles explaining the log format and various events.

RE: OWA Setup on a different machine on XCH2000 SP2

2002-07-17 Thread Anthony L. Sollars

What would be the best way to implement OWA, for remote users in a 50 person
company? The OWA service would be available to the internet. Is my best bet,
to just install OWA on the exchange server, which is how our 5.5 is now, and
allow traffic into our lan through the firewall?

Thanks,

tony

Au contraire. When users travel to branch offices, using OWA across the
intranet is a perfect way for them to check their mail with minimum effort
on their part.

Just curious - isn't the fact that OWA is being used at all mean that
the box is exposed to the Internet, even if it's NAT'ed behind a

Thanks!

Mailbox not created

2002-07-17 Thread Friese, Casey

I have a wierd issue here that I never before had happen to me. I am running Exchange
2000 SP2 in an all Windows 2000 Domain. This is a one server, one site setup.
Exchange and DC are on different machines but on the same network segment and in the
same room.

When I create a new account in active directory users and computers and check the box
to create an exchange mailbox the process is carried out seemingly. When I refresh
the screen and look at the properties of the newly created account there are no e-mail
address (either smtp or x400) listed in the E-Mail addresses tab. When I try to
connect to the mailbox through outlook I cant resolve the name

Thank you,

Casey Friese

OWA 2000 - logon box weirdness

2002-07-17 Thread Jesse Rink

Trying to make sense of this...
My newly built Exchange 2000 box is running OWA.

>From the inside network, when I go to the OWA page (outlook.mycompany.com)
I get prompted for a username, password, and domain box. I have IE5 on
NT4.

>From the inside network, when my coworker goes to the OWA page
(outlook.mycompany.com) he does not get prompted for a username, password,
and domain box. It goes right into his mailbox without having to enter in
credentials. He has IE5 with NT4.

I had another user access the OWA page from home and they get prompted for
the username, password, and domain. They used IE6.

Anohter user accessed the OWA page from home, and they only got prompted
for a username and password, NO domain. This person was not able to logon
even though they supposedly used the domain\username appropriately.

What's the deal with the 2 box logon versus the 3 box logon? And why do
some PCs here need to authenticate and others go rihgt in? It's weird.

Thanks

Go to the Application Event Log and filter for 4192 events, making sure that
you have the Description Bar at the top of the page turned on. Turn it on
by going to View | Customize... and checking the appropriate box.

Now, after you filter for event 4192, it will show you XX of XXX events.

RE: OWA 2000 - logon box weirdness

2002-07-17 Thread Anthony L. Sollars

Because internally OWA is using windows authentication, and your user is
logged into the domain, hence his authentication token is being passed to
the OWA server allowing him access to his mailbox. Now if he can access
other illegally then there is a problem. But remotely from home OWA relies
on basic authentication to prove the user has permission to access the

Subject: OWA 2000 - logon box weirdness

It's weird.

Thanks

Disclosures on Email

2002-07-17 Thread James

I know that a user can create a disclosure that appears when the signature
is chosen in outlook tools.

My question is -- Can I create a system wide disclosure that will be on
all outbound emails and not on internal emails? one or the other or both?

I haven't found anything in exchange server that would help, but it seems
that there should be a way.

Thanks,

James

All
I am having an annoying problem with exchange on a blackberry server. The

Anyway, when i launch the setup, wither from explorer or the comamand

error message that reads
"A Fatal Setup Error has Occurred" Error Message Occurs When You Try to
Install Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server".

Well, i found a Kb article(Q319757) which is of no help becausei do not have

I reduced mine to send the warnings something like once a night for one

Enabling Outbound Integrated Authentication for SMTP connector.

2002-07-17 Thread Jason Brown

Any 'gotcha's' that I should be aware of before I turn this on? Should this
be combined with TLS encryption or would the overhead be too high? NSA's
guide recomends only using Integrated Authentication unless traffic is
super-sensitive. Thought I would get some feedback from people who have
implemented these options.

TIA!

RE: Front-end Servers

2002-07-17 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

So, if I wanted to take my new front-end/back-end setup and have the
front-ends setup for
routing inbound/outbound mail - I can do this via setting up smtp virtual
directories.
Current setup is (2) fe's and (2) be's with load balancing on the
front-ends. I have a virtual
IP & Name in DNS for a single point for the NLB to the front-ends.

Testing: since I have my last 5.5 server handling the smtp at the present
time, can I
setup the smtp virtual directories to handle some test mail so I can ensure
that
email is capable of being routed properly. I have (2) unix box's that route
all incoming
email to the smtp server for distribution and no plans to change there
duties.

Anyone do this type of setup, yet...

Ron

No. They support POP3 and IMAP protocol proxying as well and can be used as
SMTP gateways.

They can.

They can handle SMTP traffic I believe.

Recovering servers

2002-07-17 Thread Chris Jordan

We are writing the procedures that are needed to recover our hub Site:
 - Its a hub and spoke environment, with 100 or so spokes.
 - We have two servers in our hub Site.
 - We are running Exchange V5.5 SP 3.
 - Exchange on-line backups available.
 - NT server backups available.
 - Full server backups (with Exchange services set to off-line) are NOT
available.

On a Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery exercise (for the hub only at
present), we need to restore these hub servers onto new hardware.
Both servers should get installed into the same named Organisation, the same
named Site, and the same named Server as their originals.

The first server that is recovered should be installed with SETUP /R, and
"Create new site" should be specified.

BUT - what about the second server??
 - Do we use SETUP /R, or normal SETUP?
 - Do we join this site (its all happening on a totally separate test
network) that was created when we installed the first server? Or do we also
say "Create new Site" and give it the same name as the Site we want to join?

Thanks for any clues / information / guidance

Cheers, Chris

Only server in a site

2002-07-17 Thread Chris Jordan

I have in the past followed the instructions involved with removing the
first server in a site.

However, we have a Site with just one server in it. We wish to remove the
whole of this site / server. Is there anything particular we need to do to
the rest of the Sites within the Organisation?

Or can we just remove the server + remove the connectors + remove the
directory replication connectors?

There are no users left on this server (apart from our final test user).
There are no Public Folders homed on this server.

Thanks, Chris

Environment:
(1) Exchange 2000 server running on my internal network with OWA

I want users from the internet to be able to access my OWA server by
entering in the URL of "outlook.mydomain.com" rather than
"myserver.mydomain.com/exchange". This is how I had it configured when
I was running Exchange 5.5 in the past. Is there any problem changing
the Default Web Site properties in IIS on the Exchange 2000 server to
redirect to the /exchange directory? It's just that my users have been
used to accessing the "outlook.mydomain.com" URL for so long now,
adjusting to a new URL would be problematic.

Second, when I had OWA running under my Exchange 5.5 organization, I had
SSL installed on the OWA box. I would like to take my Verisign
certificate and move it to my new OWA 2000 server. Do I apply the
certificate to the Default Web Site? Any problem I should know about
with this?

Thanks.

One more time OWA setup problems

2002-07-17 Thread M2web

I asked this problem a couple of days ago but the answers did not help and I
notice that there are others in this list and several other lists with the
same exact problem but still no solution, so I am going to ask one more time
having done all the solotions been suggested to my post or posts similar to
it here and else-where:

I have setup a test E2K server running with sp2 and all updates. The domain
consists of one forest with three subdomains. The forest is called
"corp.int.mydomain.com". The subdomain which I have installed the E2K server
is called "ca.corp.int.mydomain.com" .
I have also installed IM and it works fine. However using IE6 to goto
\\servername\exchange or \\IP address\exchange I get a popup to enter user
name password and domain like OWA Exch 5.5.
I checked M drive and and the first subdirectory shows corp.int.mydomain.com
so I added an SMTP email address as [EMAIL PROTECTED] (alias and
userids are all the same)

I have used the following entries in the popup authentication box:
username, password, ca.corp.int.mydomain.com
username, password, corp.int.mydomain.com
[EMAIL PROTECTED], password
[EMAIL PROTECTED], password, ca.corp.int.mydomain.com
[EMAIL PROTECTED], password, corp.int.mydomain.com
[EMAIL PROTECTED], password, pre-Win2k domain name

but I can not get the webpage to come up.
Any further help or points to any paper written on this (I did read Williams
suggestion on Front and Backend servers) will be appreciated.

RE: Move user native permissions

2002-07-17 Thread Baker, Jennifer

The user would need domain admin rights *if* they logon the *domain
controller* console and move mailboxes from there.

It sounds like you want to enable and manage administrative groups and use
the delegation wizard in the Exchange Sys Manager. (All kinds of info on
technet or http://support.microsoft.com)

After you've figured out the admin groups and the delegation wizard,
helpdesk/local IT staff can install ADUC on their desktop or a terminal
server and create/move the mail enabled users from there.

I get error messages from Exchange routed to my inbox.
Recently I keep getting a host unknown on a sent item outgoing mail
message and an unknown recipient on incoming mail message error

I suspect it is some virus or worm trying and failing but how do I figure
out what machine? Is this logged somewhere?

INCOMING ERROR
The following recipients did not receive the attached mail. Reasons are
listed with each recipient:

Host
Unknown
The message that caused this notification was:
The message has a very strange subject:
dch`cii`che`h.df`je`dci`dcd."&!"d
Inside is just "N/S|N/S|N/S|N/S"

OUTGOING ERROR
A mail message could not be sent because the following host is unknown:

Since both are failures I am not really worried but how can I figure out
what machine is sending and/or receiving the messages?

RE: Only server in a site

2002-07-17 Thread Baker, Jennifer

Friggin' remove all the connectors and uninstall exchange on the server in
the
unwanted site. That's the old way... although there may be other new ways I
don't care to know about.

Subject: Only server in a site

I have in the past followed the instructions involved with removing the
first server in a site.

However, we have a Site with just one server in it. We wish to remove the
whole of this site / server. Is there anything particular we need to do to
the rest of the Sites within the Organisation?

Or can we just remove the server + remove the connectors + remove the
directory replication connectors?

There are no users left on this server (apart from our final test user).
There are no Public Folders homed on this server.

Thanks, Chris

Is that address defined in a recipient policy? Have you checked the many

Re: One more time OWA setup problems

2002-07-17 Thread M2web

the address corp.int.mydomainname.com is defined in the default recipients
policy. And yes I have checked and read not only the threads on this
question on the list but two others and none have ever had a solution. It
seems that it works for few and for many it just does not.

RE: Storage Limits Warning

2002-07-17 Thread Bryon Barkley

Go to the properties of the mailbox store where the user is located, select
the Limits tab then select Customize at the right of Warning Message
Interval field. Change the Detail view to 15 minutes and only highlight one
column. This should provide a warning message once at the time you
selected.

You can change the limits on an individual user in the properties of the
mailbox. Just de-select Use information store defaults and change it to what
ever limit needed.

As far as I know the Information Store Site Configuration is the only place
to modify those settings. How is yours currently setup? What time(s) is it
set to kick off?

Subject: Storage Limits Warning
