RE: Mail-enabled public folders

2003-07-16 Thread Aldridge, Graham
How would you check this?

The new folders created under All Public Folders are accessable through outlook but
not in GAL or Microsoft Exchange System Objects

Could the default public store setting be pointing to a now non-existant
store, such as an old 5.5 server?

RE: Store.exe memory leak

2003-07-16 Thread Jim Richards
I had a machine with a similar problem and similar load, no matter what I tried I
still had this problem (Though I gave up early, given our impending ex2k upgrade), it
would happen every few days. I took the easy way out, and set up a nightly stop and
start of the IMS in the scheduler.

probably bad form, but it did the job, especially since we had an smtp server to
queue the email externally in the event that our IMS was unavailable.

Subject: Store.exe memory leak

Help, I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 with 2 gigs of memory for 500 users on
a NT Domain . The Store.exe has a memory leak which Consumes all available
memory and stops the Internet Mail Connector.
I have run the Optimizer to limit the Store which did not help.
Thanks for the help...

Hi List,

Is there a command line option to move mailbox's between 5.5 & E2K stores?
Something to batch move groups of users.

Many thanks

RE: A benchmark if you have time...

2003-07-16 Thread Roger Seielstad
I don't think its valid to benchmark single drive performance and expect
those numbers to translate directly to a RAID configuration.

Were I to wager a guess, I'd say that the RAID1 mirror your store is sitting
on is the bottle neck. Spreading out the array (ie into RAID5 or RAID10)
helps increase the drive concurrency, and therefore the potential
throughput, of your disk subsystem.

That being said, SCSI and Fibre Channel are built from the ground up for a
single controller to manage multiple (>2) drives. IDE (in any variety)
isn't. I doubt dropping a RAID5 ATA array would significantly improve on
that issue.

Personally, if you're going to the expense of running 9 Exchange servers, at
least 3 of which are Enterprise Edition, I find it hard to rationalize
buying low end hardware.

RE: Mail-enabled public folders

2003-07-16 Thread Couch, Nate
I believe that if you go to ADUC and do a find on your domain for all public
folders you should be able to get that information. Be sure to add the
Exchange Mailbox Store column to your view. This should tell you on which
store, if any, your PF's are homed.

RE: Move Mailbox

2003-07-16 Thread Edgington, Jeff
I have some stuff we've written in house that uses a C++ example that MS
published... I've only used it with E2K, but you're welcome to take a
look at it and give it a try between E5.5 and E2K.

Just shoot me an e-mail if you want it.

Hi List,

Is there a command line option to move mailbox's between 5.5 & E2K
stores?
Something to batch move groups of users.

Many thanks

RE: A benchmark if you have time...

This may give you guidelines to how you should configure your servers to
host Exchange databases.

Subject: A benchmark if you have time...

I know this subject has been brought up before (and yes, I've looked
through the archives), but I'm looking for a little more detail.

Our current exchange environment is as follows:

- 9600 mailboxes (spread evenly over the servers)
- most quotas are 50/55/65 (warn/prohibit send/prohibit send/receive)
with about 5 percent exceeding this (some upwards of 600MB)
- 3 Protocol servers (running NLB)
- 1GHz w/ 1GB RAM
- 6 Mailbox Servers (in-house built)
- Dual PIII 866
- 2GB RAM
- 3Ware 7000-8 IDE RAID Controller (7200 rpm drives, 3 mirrors -
OS/TLOGS/Store - 1 hot spare)
- 1Gbit NIC
- 1 Standby Mailbox Server (empty) that is same as above configuration.

This is an _OK_ configuration... it's been stable, but lacks some speed
(disk queue lengths on the storage mirrors will reach 80+ at times and I
can correlate the 'waiting on server' message with these queue
lengths)... the advantage of the multiple servers is that if an outage
occurs, it affects only 1/6th of the people... we are looking at
purchasing a SCSI disk subsystem for the current servers and are also
going as far as looking at purchasing name-brand servers with a SAN. I
have been able to test (using HD Tach 2.61) 10,000 rpm SCSI drives, 7200
rpm SCSI drives, 7200 PATA IDE drive.. I'm waiting on a SATA drive
(already have a controller)... so far all have performed very close to
each other... it's not clear to me that the test I'm using is giving me
information that I can use to base my decision on.

What I'm looking for is what are others with similar mailbox
environments using?. What do you like about your config? What do you
wish you could change? If you are using a SAN, which brand/model?

Thanks for your time!

I believe that if you go to ADUC and do a find on your domain for all public
folders you should be able to get that information. Be sure to add the
Exchange Mailbox Store column to your view. This should tell you on which
store, if any, your PF's are homed.

RE: exmerge

2003-07-16 Thread by
Thank you very much to whom trying to help.

I have successfully created a SMS package to encrypt the exchange
service password for running exmerge utility. As this package would be
used by some authorised staff only, so I think I have not exposed too
much risk here.

Create a batch file that would use ExMerge. When ExMerge runs in batch
mode, it reads the names of mailboxes to be exported from a text file,
and I also uses an INI file to figured out which text file to use. So
preconfigure the INI file.

Use windows Task Scheduler and schedule the batch file to run. When you
schedule it, you will be asked to supply username and password - stick
the service account credentials in there.

When someone needs to export mailboxes, they could modify the text file
that has a list of mailboxes, then go to the Scheduled Tasks,
right-click on the ExMerge job and run it.
(or if they want to use a different text file altogether, they could
even modify the INI file to point to the other text tile)

Dear all,

So far all the articles I have read about "exmerge" is, it requires
"Exchange service account" logon to perform the task.

I am trying to setup a standard procedure that desktop support staff can
learn using "exmerge" for archiving mailbox data to PST before deleting
the exchange mailbox accounts. As I am avoiding informing them the
password of "exchange service account" if possible, can somebody advise
how to handle the situation?

Thank you.

Contacts issue

2003-07-16 Thread John Parker
I think I may have found the issue.
And you helped me see it Peter. Thanks.

When my clients begin a new email, and they click the to: button, then click the drop
down, there are two listings for "Contacts". The problem is, when you click on the
first one, it states that it is not available, yet the second "Contacts" contain the
actual contacts.
Not sure how this happened. Any idea how to easily clean this up?

RE: Contacts issue

2003-07-16 Thread East, Bill
Profiles, John Parker. If you've modified a profile it sometimes will
retain links back to the old mailbox's contacts folder. I'm trying to
train our folks here to always add/delete profiles, never modify.

Please be giving my regards to John Bigbootie.

FWIW, "good" ATA RAID controllers use a dedicated IDE channel and
controller per drive, and present the logical volumes as SCSI devices,
eliminating most of the brain damages that IDE has. That being said...

Total agreement. Hardware's cheap compared to software licenses,
performance problems, and downtime.

Running DomainPrep in an existing Exchange Org?

2003-07-16 Thread Jason Clishe
I posted a message to the list a few days ago about a problem I'm having
at a client. To summarize, all Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins have
full administrative rights in Exchange, even though those groups are NOT
listed in the Exchange Delegation Wizard. Unfortunately I didn't receive
any responses.

So then I figured that I'd just add the Domain Admins and Enterprise
Admins groups to the Exchange Delegation Wizard, and then go back and
remove them, hoping that would clear out those permissions from wherever
they happen to be hiding. Well that didn't work. When I attempted to add
the permissions using the wizard I got the error "Failed to grant
permission for DOMAIN\Domain Admins on this object:
/dc=com/dc=domain/cn=Configuration." When I clicked OK, I then got the
same error message for the Enterprise Admins group.

Obviously I'd rather not go into ADSI Edit and start monkeying with
permissions manually. So my question is this...what would happen if I
ran domainprep again? Would that reset all Exchange permissions back to
default? What account would then have Exchange Full Admins rights?

Thanks

Jason

The "Outlook Address Book" service is hosed. It gets screwed up at the
drop of a hat, so that isn't surprising. Exit Outlook. Go to Control
Panel, then "Mail" (or whatever it is called on your OS). Remove the OAB
"service" from the profile. Start Outlook and then exit again without doing
anything (this step may not be strictly necessary, but it makes me feel
good). Go back to the MAPI profile, and add the OAB service back in.

legacyexchangedn

I am restoring a database to an offline Exch2k SP3 server. I have
changed all the legacyexchangedn values and have all other names
correct. The IS fails to start and I receive this I have no AV

RE: legacyexchangedn

2003-07-16 Thread John Parker
This was the only thing I could find from www.eventid.net

Look for the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan and set
"Enabled" to a value of 0. Stop and restart the exchange services.

If the information store comes up after the change, then the following explanation
should take care of the problem. I came across this error on a server where the
antivirus software was installed prior to Exchange service pack 1 on a new server
build. Exchange SP1 adds the hooks for the antivirus scanning software. Before SP1,
antivirus software didn't have a way to properly scan the information store. In this
situation, it is best to uninstall the antivirus software for the exchange services,
install SP1 at a minimum or SP3 if possible, then reinstall the antivirus software.

Re: legacyexchangedn

2003-07-16 Thread Tony Hlabse
I have run into this before. IIRC it has to do with a setting in the
registry. Search the Local on the Server itself for the "Restore in
progress" It has to be set to one then try starting the IS. Something about
SP patch level differences. There is a Q article on this too. Do not
remember the search criteria

RE: legacyexchangedn

2003-07-16 Thread Woodruff, Michael
Here's the deal.. I only had a priv.edb from a corrupted database
backup. I ran eseutil /P and created a new .stm file as well. It ran
fine and repaired the DB. I put the DB on my recovery server and
followed appropriate steps to recover. I don't have a patch file or
anything, but the DB. ESEUTIL now shows the database as clean now.
This is where the stated error comes in?

RE: legacyexchangedn

2003-07-16 Thread Tony Hlabse
I will try and find the other article but I think if you run the patch first
before setting the restore key and try restarting , that may be the problem.
You then have to restore again. :If yopu miss the sequence you hav eto start
all over.

Yes I found one article hopefully it will help. You also have to run
eseutil in patch mode too.

I had a machine with a similar problem and similar load, no matter what I
tried I still had this problem (Though I gave up early, given our impending
ex2k upgrade), it would happen every few days. I took the easy way out,
and set up a nightly stop and start of the IMS in the scheduler.

probably bad form, but it did the job, especially since we had an smtp
server to queue the email externally in the event that our IMS was
unavailable.

Multiple SRSes

2003-07-16 Thread Ali Wilkes (IT)
Exch 5.5/2000 mixed. Ex2k servers installed "in" single 5.5 site.
(3) Exch2k servers (sp3, win2ksp3) - ex01, ex02, ex03
EX01 was installed as the first e2k server. It has the ADC, SRS, "IMC",
and IM (no users). EX02 later installed. Lots of users. EX03 recently
installed. No users.

Recently brought to my attention: the SRS service on EX03 is running.

Anyone had this happen? I highly doubt I'm going to find any docs or Q
articles on it. I'm looking for them anyways.

Questions:
What has been impacted by having two SRS's?
What will be impacted when the "second" one is stopped?

TIA

Mailbox recovery E2K

2003-07-16 Thread Tony Hlabse
I had a question poised to me to which I never thought about or tested. In
an E2K/MS2000 domain setup in mixed mode, with muliplte email servers in one
group. If one of the servers goes down and all the customer wants to do is
restore email flow for those users affected. He would like to know does he
just delete the mailbox from the affected users AD account and create new
ones on the other email servers? I never tried it? What does the users have
to do logout of Outlook?

I think deleting mailboxes make new ones and have the users logoff and back
may be ok.

Thoughts?

RE: Contacts issue

This happened to us when I had to move all the mailboxes out to .psts with
Exmerge to rebuild a corrupt server (Dell Server with faulty RAID). Ben

was the bad address book and just deleted that rather than recreating the

I think I may have found the issue.
And you helped me see it Peter. Thanks.

When my clients begin a new email, and they click the to: button, then
click the drop down, there are two listings for "Contacts". The problem
is, when you click on the first one, it states that it is not available,
yet the second "Contacts" contain the actual contacts.
Not sure how this happened. Any idea how to easily clean this up?

Mail.kpafilms.com is the MX record

Sorry Roger if I butchered the NDR...here's exactly what it says (very
unimformative)
I guess it would be more approiate to call it a Dilvery delayed report,
we never receive and actual NDR and the recipient never receives the
message.

Seeing as Casey has butchered the NDR's its nearly impossible to tell
what's actually happening.

However, its not *completely* impossible. penncolor.com *is* delivering
the mail, and the reject is coming from their end:

> Received: from exbdc01.kpafilms.com
> mail.kpafilms.com[12.155.200.200](misconfigured sender))

Their Exchange (I presume) server (exbdc01.kpafilms.com) is rejecting
the mail from their mail relay (mail.kpafilms.com), as is clearly
spelled out by this slice of NDR.

And, in this case, the fix is the same for Ex 5.5 and for E2k - beat the
foreign postmaster about the head and shoulders with a 2x4 until they
fix their mail issues.

Re: Exchange client through DMZ.

You need access to the ports used by the client of those IP addresses where
your email servers reside. You should know the ports and ask your firewall
guy to gain access to those IP's as well

RE: misconfigured sender

2003-07-16 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
Well, let me take a stab at this...

Because of this:
kpafilms.comMX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mail.kpafilms.com
kpafilms.comMX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mi.kpafilms.com

Due to your MX record, all mail addressed to kpafilms.com is going to
MI.kpafilms.com, which is not allowing connections on port 25. However,
when you send directly to mail.kpafilms.com, it allows the connection.

OK, why would I be able to send to the mx record of the domain and not the
domain itself?

Example:

Sending to [EMAIL PROTECTED] sits in my queue and wont deliver

But

If I send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] it get's delivered fine

Mail.kpafilms.com is the MX record

Sorry Roger if I butchered the NDR...here's exactly what it says (very
unimformative)
I guess it would be more approiate to call it a Dilvery delayed report, we
never receive and actual NDR and the recipient never receives the message.

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

Seeing as Casey has butchered the NDR's its nearly impossible to tell what's
actually happening.

However, its not *completely* impossible. penncolor.com *is* delivering the
mail, and the reject is coming from their end:

> Received: from exbdc01.kpafilms.com
> mail.kpafilms.com[12.155.200.200](misconfigured sender))

Their Exchange (I presume) server (exbdc01.kpafilms.com) is rejecting the
mail from their mail relay (mail.kpafilms.com), as is clearly spelled out by
this slice of NDR.

And, in this case, the fix is the same for Ex 5.5 and for E2k - beat the
foreign postmaster about the head and shoulders with a 2x4 until they fix
their mail issues.

I had a question poised to me to which I never thought about or tested.
In
an E2K/MS2000 domain setup in mixed mode, with muliplte email servers in
one
group. If one of the servers goes down and all the customer wants to do
is
restore email flow for those users affected. He would like to know does
he
just delete the mailbox from the affected users AD account and create
new
ones on the other email servers? I never tried it? What does the users
have
to do logout of Outlook?

I think deleting mailboxes make new ones and have the users logoff and
back
may be ok.

Thoughts?

Make sure the W2K SMTP service is disabled. This will conflict with

Do you know if there are different settings for a

owa exchange 5.5

2003-07-16 Thread Matt
Hi all

Just installed sp6a nt and sp4 on this server. IIS was not installed. Installed IIS
and the nt 4.0 option
pack for IIS 4.0. Everything went fine except I got serveral "The ODBC resource DLL
(c:\windows\system\odbcint.dll) is a different version than the ODBC driver manager
(c:\windows\system\odbc32.dll)". I went to the MDAC page at MS to
download the correct versions but I must admit I am confused. Which one do I want to
download. this server is NT 4.0
running exchange 5.5. I'm alsp assuming this is why IIS 4.0 will not run the default
asp web MS installs. I keep getting 500 internal errors.

Thanks for any Help

RE: Move Exchange server to new hard drive?

2003-07-16 Thread Arch Willingham
I ended up doing most of what you said. I used Ghost 2002 to do a disk to disk copy,
let it resize the partitions on the new drive (SCSI), removed the old drive, re-booted
and it worked perfectly! Once it re-booted, it said it found new hardware and that I
needed to re-boot. After it did I ran a check disk and it is working great.

Took about 45 minutes start to finish.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Agreed. I would install the new disk, use Ghost to image the disk across (while making
the second partition fill the remainder of the new disk, and then
shut down and remove the old drive for safe keeping. Once the new drive came up ok, I
would shut it down again then install another identical disk and bring
it back up and have windows mirror the disks.

I am assuming you are using IDE disks in this system, and considering that most of
them only have one year warranties, I'd add the second one to cover my
rear a bit.

I think he means the system files, too.

Personally I would use some disk imaging software and push the image onto the new

Install the new drive. Then, with the Exchange services running, in the properties
for the storage group you can relocate the transaction logs, and in the
properties for the store you can relocate the database files.

What's the best way to put a new disk in an exchange 2000 server? Right now, its
sitting in a N2000 server with one 17 MB SCSI disk broken into two
partitions (one 6gb and one 11gb). I'd like to put it on one big drive (say around 70
GB) but still broken into two partitions so that I don't have to
re-install a ton of software.

Any ideas?

Here is what I get when I telnet remotely:
$telnet mail-server-IP 110

Then same error whatever i type the next.

Steve,
My mail server has dial-up access. There is no problem when i dial-up to it.
But when I (manually) choose to connect with other ISP dial-up, it does not
work at all. Cannot send , cannot receive any mail. No error. The outlook

Norbu (your real name ?) :)

telnet to the mailserver on port 110
When it says POP3 server ready stuff, enter
user YourUserName
pass YourPassword
list

(Needless to say replace YourUserName and YourPasword with your actual
data)

See how far you get - if it lists a lot you should have no problem from
outlook unless your pst file is very large (>2GB) or you have thousands
of mails in your mailbox and activated 'leave messages on the server'.
Then it can hang like this

Mail enabled public folder

2003-07-16 Thread Steve Molkentin
Gurus,

Ex2K - Native mode

I have a mail enabled public folder (calendar) for a meeting room that I
can e-mail when booking a meeting to ensure it is booked. This works,
however it only tentatively accepts the meeting request.

Some questions:
- Can (and how, if so) can I get it to auto accept meeting requests?
- Can (and how, if so) can I have the meetings it has already booked in
show in the "Free/Busy" grid that displays when I select other users?
- Can (and how, if so) can I get it to delete the appointment if I send
a cancel meeting request?

I am happy to be pointed to somewhere the KB - I have spent some time
looking there, however MS have done something to their support site and
every new page I get up asks me to debug.

All help graciously appreciated...

themolk.
