RE: More than one domain in the same AD / Exchange

2003-11-06 Thread Troels Majlandt
Hmm, maybe there is somethíng that I have overlook here.

Yes the Exchange should recive more than one domains, i.m.e. domain01.com
and domain02.com (this I know should bee set up on the Exchange server)

but the i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] are NOT the same
user - they are two different persons.

Also I did belive - maybe worng - that Exhcange is connected to AD so that
a user must bee made in the AD - so the user can get a maibox etc.

And therefore I need to have more than one domain in the same AD or ??
Have I overlook something here.

Re: Problem with OWA

2003-11-06 Thread brian . a . charest
Im having the same issue with OWA and IE crashing with the datime.dll. In
my case the server and all the clients are on the internal network. 95%
of the IE clients work fine. The other 5% crash perhaps 1/3 of the time
when they first attempt to connect. 4 machines in my office are all on
the same switch and only 1 has the problem. I'm at a loss. Thanks for
any ideas.

RE: Symantec Antivirus for Exchange and regular expressions

2003-11-06 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
Regular expressions worked in NAVEX 3.0x but there was no option for
SMTP scanning.

Now I am playing with Symantec Mail Security for Exchange v 4.0 and it
allows regular expressions too, plus scans inbound and outgoing SMTP
mail.

I am having a hard time configuring it to scan inbound SMTP mail. It
seems that it is not very flexible when the local DNS name is not the
same as the local e-mail address suffixes.

Subject: Symantec Antivirus for Exchange and regular expressions

Hello, I am trying to configure NAVEX to scan message subject lines with
regular expressions but it is not quite understanding me (or am I doing
something wrong?)

I am trying to give it this expression:

(\([Nn]ew \)|\([Ll]ast \)|\([Ll]atest \)|\([Nn]ewest \)|\([Cc]urrent
\))(\([Mm]icrosoft \)|\([Nn]et \)|\([Ii]nternet \)|\([Nn]etwork
\))*(\([Ss]ecurity \)|\([Cc]ritical
\))*(\([Uu]pdate\)|\([Pp]atch\)|\([Pp]ack\)|\([Uu]pgrade\))

When I click Save, NAVEX breaks up this string into a bunch of smaller
strings.

Am I expecting too much from NAVEX?

ISO 8859-1 translation

I am trying to locate a web site to do online caracter translation to and
from iso-8859-1. I need that to be able to block spam using keywords in the
e-mail subject using the 8859-1 format but display by Outlook as normal
caracter.

Exemple: Here the subjet field of a real message.

What you see:
Receive your Silde--- Citr--- order in 24 to 48 hours

What's really in the smtp header:

?iso-8859-1?B?UmVjZWl2ZSB5b3VyIFNpbGRlbmFmaWwgQ2l0cmF0ZSAgb3JkZXIgaW4gMjQgdG

caracter translation so I can adjust anti-spam filter.

Thank you.

Then it seems you are out of luck. AOL does, in fact, block e-mail from
many "dynamic" ip addresses - where or how they get the pools of addresses
is another question. If you are a business, it may be time to consider
another ISP. Most business-class solutions that ISP's offer (even cable or
DSL solutions) will include a static IP.

Hello folks:

Our environment: native E2k, FE/BE for OWA.

What is the best, most efficient way to track user's access to OWA? I'm
looking to begin tracking OWA usage (how many users are logging in, how
often and for how long, etc.). I've read about filtering through the IIS
logs and am just about ready to call into PSS, however, I was wondering if
anyone has come across any other solution.

Thanks in advance!

Subject: Capturing users' access to OWA

Hello folks:

Our environment: native E2k, FE/BE for OWA.

What is the best, most efficient way to track user's access to OWA? I'm
looking to begin tracking OWA usage (how many users are logging in, how
often and for how long, etc.). I've read about filtering through the IIS
logs and am just about ready to call into PSS, however, I was wondering if
anyone has come across any other solution.

Thanks in advance!

SMIME/Encryption and Slow Performance on Client

2003-11-06 Thread Erik L. Vesneski
Hi,

I have a few users using SMIME and Digital Signatures when emailing
internally as well as with a nother external company.

- When emailing internaly with the 'Encrypt messages and attachments'
the end user has fast performance via Outlook.

- When emailing externally with the 'Encrypt messages and attachments'
& the 'Add digital signature to this message' they are 'hourglassed'
sending the email for about 30 seconds. If they receive an email back
with the same level of encryption from the external company it takes 80
seconds for the email to open up after typing in the users pw.

- The digital signature has been added locally from the external users.

Outside of normal testing internally and externally I am unsure of why
the long delay is occuring.

Is this due to the digital signatures, the SMIME, CA, or anything in the
Exchange environment?

Or is this normal?

Thanks in advance,

Then it seems you are out of luck. AOL does, in fact, block e-mail from
many "dynamic" ip addresses - where or how they get the pools of addresses
is another question. If you are a business, it may be time to consider
another ISP. Most business-class solutions that ISP's offer (even cable or
DSL solutions) will include a static IP.

Earthlink does NOT offer a static IP for cable internet accounts.
Earthlink will NOT provide any DNS services, like making a PTR record.

RE: Does anyone know how to get rid of unwanted emails?

2003-11-06 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
Hilda,

When you create your DL, you want to add the SMTP addresses under the
"E-mail addresses" tab. The DL will have no members listed under the
General tab.

Therefore, all those SMTP addresses are in your organization, but there is
no one to deliver them to and there is no mailbox to store them in, so they
go POOF and disappear into hyperspace.

We have a relay system that holds so much unwanted emails from users who
have changed their SMTP addresses as well as those that have left the firm.
I read a TID that says if you create a DL (distribution list) on the
Exchange (5.5) Server and list all the SMTP addresses inside the DL, that
the Exchange server will just drop all these unwanted emails into a black
hole. Well, I tried this and obviously it does not seem to work.

Any ideas?

RE: Does anyone know how to get rid of unwanted emails?

2003-11-06 Thread Smith, Ronni
I think you misread/misunderstood. You want to list all the e-mail addresses
that you want to go poof as alternate internet addresses _for_ the DL. The
dl has no addresses in it. So when it is expanded it expands to nothing.
Hence the black hole.

Subject: PST file conversion

Hi,

I expect this isn't really appropriate for this list, but I'll throw in the
question anyway!

My CEO recently left the organisation - end of his contract, so on good
terms - and we exported everything from his mailbox into a PST file for him.
Whilst he can access this from his PC at home, the PC he has at his new
appointment is a Linux desktop with 'Evolution' as the email client.

Is there any way he (or being more specific, I) can open the PST file within
Evolution, or transfer the contents of the PST to the equivalent under the
new email client ?

The simplest way would be to forward everything in the PST file to his new
email address, but the PST file is quite large and contains hundreds,
probably thousands of emails.

Any advice accepted (except to use Outlook - I've tried that one already !)

PST file conversion

2003-11-06 Thread Tim John - Domainz

Would you recommend to boot the machine in safe mode and do a full scan?
Or is it a bit harder than that...

The listserve may be [EMAIL PROTECTED] but when you send an email to it
from Exchange, Exchange is looking at the local recipients and not seeing it

The best solution would be to have two domain names. Your Exchange should be

Sorry for the double post, but this has more info...

I have a problem that is affecting two users on my network, and I cannot
figure it out...maybe someone here can help.

Outlook on both computers takes about 30 seconds to send and email to people
outside of our domain and sometimes to people inside our domain.
For everyone else email works fine. Any suggestions on what it might be?
Could it be something local or something at the server level?

Both computers are fully patched, both windows and Office service packs are
installed and all updates applied. We are using Office XP and Exchange 2000.

I Am not sure if this has anything to do with the issue, but I recently took
our old NT4 domain offline and deleted the trust between both server.

Thank for your help

Christopher H.

Subject: strange headers

Hi, our organisation received an email yesterday and I don't quite know why
it appeared the way it did.
Basically, someone sent an email from a Hotmail address yet the 'from'
field did not display the hotmail address, but an address that looked as tho
it was from our network. Now I know that it is possible to spoof addresses
and so on but I didn't think this was possible thru hotmail tho having
looked on their site, it appears you can do POP and the line below 'mail
pickup service seems to indicate that. I don't use hotmail so I don't know
whether POP could have been used.
Would someone be able to look at the headers below and tell me what
happened? I believe that someone did use a POP thru hotmail and
spoofed the address but would like confirmation or correction I have also
included the original mail but deleted some parts.
(incidentally, what is the best practice for posting headers? should I
block our sensitive stuff or is it easy enough to get hold of that it is not
worth the bother?) Much obliged Rob

That's why it bounces.
The listserve may be [EMAIL PROTECTED] but when you send an email to it
from Exchange, Exchange is looking at the local recipients and not seeing it
as a valid email address.
The best solution would be to have two domain names. Your Exchange should be
@domain.com and the listserv would be @listserv.domain.com

Subject: Exchange 5.5 and list mailer

Hi all,
I have inherited an exchange 5.5 server, and a list server that is running
freebsd and qmail. The problem is when I send to the list server through
exchange it bounces my emails with the message: the recipient name is not
recognized. If I go into exchange and track the message the properties of
the message gives me the error: address not found in the directory, and may
be a personal address book entry.

Should I add them email address to the list server to the recipient list in
exchange?

RE: Exchange Issues

2003-11-06 Thread Erik Sojka
Just to clarify: Is it a single box that acts as both ADC and Exchange or is
it two boxes?

First thing is to isolate the server from the network and especially from the
Internet so that no further damage is done and that the virus is not spread
any further.

What virus? This will determine which AV product to use and what procedures
you will need to follow. If it's an email virus, you need an Exchange-aware
virus scanning product (do *NOT* scan the Exchange Store files, *.EDB files,
*.STM files, or the M: Drive with a normal file-based AV product!!). If it's
a non-email virus scan the HD (excluding the Exchange directories and data).

If you have the appropriate AV software for the type of virus, you should be
able to scan the server without it being in Safe mode.

RE: Sporadic Email Problem

2003-11-06 Thread Martin Blackstone
It looks like you have 6 different MX records. Verify that each one can
receive email for that domain. You may have one that's messed up and is
rejecting.
Remember, just because one has the lowest cost, doesn't mean its always
going to receive the mail.

Whose server is identixps08.identix.com? It doesn't resolve to anything in

2003-11-06 Thread Fredrick Zilz
I attempted to do this, but was focused on the exchange server and IIS.
This morning I did not have to reboot: Last night at 9:00 I installed a
GFI Mailsecurity patch to correctly id MIMAIL virus (was being caught as
corrupt zip file). This installation involved stopping IIS and all
associated services, Stopping Information store, Stoping GFI services.
Apply patch. Restart IIS, Information store, GFI. The only other thing I
did was a full back up of my Information store earlier in the evening.

Last Friday I rebooted the server twice during the day and had lost all my
outlook clients connectivity. I eventually disabled GFI Mail essentials
and after another reboot, got connectivity back. I left GFI Mail
essentials service stoped thinking that I had pinpointed the problem, but
Monday and Tuesday morning I had the issue come up again and ended up
rebooting the servers. I now have Mail Essentials running again and as I
said this morning I did not have to reboot at least not so far :-).

Where is the question mark coming from?

2003-11-06 Thread Jason Clishe
Outlook 2003, Exchange 2003

Every now and then, some emails will have a question mark on the
first line of the body of the message. The sender did not put it
there. This only seems to happen on internal emails, not on emails
received from the Internet. There seems to be no other rhyme or
reason to it. It's happened to about 5 different users so far, and
multiple times for each user.

Any idea's?

Jason

Your recipient policies think lists.mydomain.org is owned by Exchange.
Check your policies.

They actually are using different domains then, sorry about that, one is
lists.mydomain.org and the other mydomain.org. I was thinking that made
them part of the same domain.

Hi all,
I have inherited an exchange 5.5 server, and a list server that is running
freebsd and qmail. The problem is when I send to the list server through
exchange it bounces my emails with the message: the recipient name is not
recognized. If I go into exchange and track the message the properties of
the message gives me the error: address not found in the directory, and may
be a personal address book entry.

Should I add them email address to the list server to the recipient list in
exchange?

1) OWA
2) VPN and OST file synchronization
3) RPC over HTTP (assuming you're running Exchange 2003/Outlook 2003)

You may also want to ensure that the downloaded messages weren't deleted
from the server (which might be the default with POP depending on the client
in use).

I'm sure I read somewhere about some explot/vuln that involved DAV (which I
noticed in the headers) - maybe that has something to do with it?

strange headers

2003-11-06 Thread Rob Hackney

Hi, our organisation received an email yesterday and I don't quite know
why it appeared the way it did.
Basically, someone sent an email from a Hotmail address yet the 'from'
field did not display the hotmail address, but an address that looked as
tho it was from our network. Now I know that it is possible to spoof
addresses and so on but I didn't think this was possible thru hotmail
tho having looked on their site, it appears you can do POP and the line
below 'mail pickup service seems to indicate that. I don't use hotmail
so I don't know whether POP could have been used.
Would someone be able to look at the headers below and tell me what
happened? I believe that someone did use a POP thru hotmail and
spoofed the address but would like confirmation or correction
I have also included the original mail but deleted some parts.
(incidentally, what is the best practice for posting headers? should I
block our sensitive stuff or is it easy enough to get hold of that it is
not worth the bother?)
Much obliged
Rob

All -

Since we applied the September 2003 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 Rollup,
Exchange produces invalid MIME header for NDRs. Within one of the content type
staements the charset specification is missing. This doesn't matter for internal
mails. But some filtering products, like ClearSwift's MIMEsweeper, will detect this
incorrect statement and classify it as corrupt.

Example:

E2K Post SP3 March roll-up:

--9B095B5ADSN=_01C3A2A523BA42BE1F14debziexc60.de.kw
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=unicode-1-1-utf-7

E2K Post SP3 September roll-up:

--9B095B5ADSN=_01C39FB8C85D40EF02B3defraexc60.de.kw
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=

Has anyone seen this kind of error? Maybe this is a problem of missing code page
support on those machines and/or a configuration issue. The fact is that the behaviour
was correct before applying this patch. The patch level before was March rollup.

Any hints are appreciated.

Kind regards/
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
