Replaying logs is not THAT time consuming. But you have to restore the
entire information store and all the logs for the storage group.

No you can't replay logs just for one user.

Have you explored the possibility that your boss was using a POP3 client
from home (or wherever he may have been) and sucked out all the mail
from his mailbox?

Do you have the deleted item retention set? Does your boss' Outlook have
the DumpsterAlwaysOn registry value set? Have you checked the retention
area (while having the Inbox selected)?

My CEO came into us today and informed us that "all of his email is
gone". According to him it was there at 10:05 and gone at 10:10. Of
course he claims that he did not move or delete it, which I have
confirmed. Nothing in the DIR, nothing in trash, or other folders. No
one else has access to his mailbox.

One of our guys is busy trying to figure out what happened. My task has
become to get it back.

I've done DR, but only for a full system. Never a single user. I was
wondering if there is a way to replay the log files for single user or
do I have to put all on my DR box and then drop to a pst from there to
import back into his account?

Your help is appreciated.

If he didn't POP it, he'd proably have set delivery to a PST file, which
would have had exactly the same effect, and that's something you can't stop

Anyway, one more argument for me to use against him to let me close pop and
only open imap.

Thanks guys!

Where did you check DIR? Just on the Deleted Items Folder? My best guess
is that he (or someone else) configured a POP3 account and pulled it all
out. IF that is the case, then it does not get moved to the Deleted Items
folder. Install the Reg entry (search Google for
dumpsteralwayson) and then try and do Recover Deleted Items from his Inbox

RE: replay log files for one user?

2004-01-02 Thread Ed Crowley [MVP]
This usually happens because of one of the following:

- Outlook is configured to deliver to a PST
- User logs into mailbox using POP
- One of the above from a home computer with an incorrectly configured
profile
- User has misconfigured his PDA synchronization software

Recheck Deleted Item Recovery with an Outlook client that has the
DumpsterAlwaysOn registry value set. Select the Inbox folder, then select
Tools > Deleted Item Recovery. Does everything show up now? Then it's very
likely one of the causes I listed or something very similar.

If your drive is full and you need to get rid of transaction logs, and
for some reason you can't run a full backup... the next best choice is
to turn on circular logging so that it would safely eat the unnecessary
logs. Then turn off circular logging and do a full backup ASAP. Moving
transaction logs somewhere else is NUTS!

I may have not been clear enough.
If your server does not have room to hold all of its transaction log
files
(on any partition) and if you can not back it up, and you want to avoid
filling up the partition containing the log files, you can stop the
services, move the (no longer needed) log files elsewhere and restart
the
services. (I've done it without any problem many times in the lab and a
few times in a production environment.) You later run the backup when
it's
available. Keep all the log files, though, as you may need them if you
have a crash.

No one said do this carelessly. Do this if you have no alternative.

You can also simply stop the Exch55 services, move (keep) the log files
to
another drive/server, and start the services. When you stop the

You can also simply stop the Exch55 services, move (keep) the log files
to
another drive/server, and start the services. When you stop the
services,
all data in the transaction logs SHOULD be committed to the databases.

No way. Never do it manually, never.

Way to often people move or delete their log files and hose the whole
system. Next thing you know they are on the phone with PSS.

Use the tools provided by Exchange to do the job. In your case, the
optimizer.

I am in a very difficult situation right now. The backup server for my 2

manually relocate the logs to an alternative location so that I can have my

Could I cause any damage to the application if I do that? Please help soon!

You need to do a backup with an exchange aware backup utility to clear
the logs. NTBACKUP works fine for this, you can even backup to a file.

I seem to be getting a flood of transaction log files on my Server, and each
log file size is exactly 5 MB (5120KB). Does anyone know if there is a way
to restrict the size or manage it.

Also, the Mail Store size is 9.5GB, the .edb database is 9.4GB and the .stm
file is 9.8GB, which gives a total of ~19GB. Any ideas how these two files
can be better managed to increase disk space?

I setup OWA and im trying to trouble shoot a problem. Enabled IIS logging
and the time in the logs do not match the actual time. Example I log into
OWA at 14:00 and my logs say that I did at 18:00. Any ideas? My system time
is correct, My DC time is correct, the computer that im logging into OWA
with time is correct. Looked on technet for wrong log time with IIS and
haven't found anything useful yet. I'm sure its some newbie thing ive over

Yesterday, my exchange server started generating over 7gbs of log files,
each 5mb when there weren't more that 5-10 at t time. Can someone shed some

RE: Flusing log files - almost out of space

2003-02-24 Thread Pat Richard
I set the Exchange option to FULL.

I went back out there on Friday. I shut down Exchange gracefully, and
checked the logs. Everything was flushed. I nuked the logs and restarted
Exchange. Everything is working fine now.

I tweaked BENT a little in hopes that an error about writing catalogs
disappears.

Thanks to all for the refresher info. Much appreciated.

How exactly did you "set" the logs to flush in BE?
Verify that job method for Exchange (Tools/Options) and the job itself is
set for a full online backup.

RE: Flusing log files - almost out of space

2003-02-19 Thread Pat Richard
Yep. BENT 8.x with the Exchange agent. But it appears it was only flushing
the logs on Fridays. Well, last Friday's job didn't finish because it
couldn't write the catalog to the drive (due to space). BENT shows the job
as successful, but there's an entry in the app log about the catalog
failure. That's what makes me think that's why it couldn't flush. I set the
daily BU jobs to also flush, but it (apparently) didn't do this on Monday
night. I'm heading back there to look at these possible causes/resolutions:

XADM: Using Eseutil to Determine Which Logs Have Been Committed
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;182961

XADM: How to Recover from a Full Transaction Log File Drive

XADM: How to Tell Which Transaction Log Files Can Be Safely Removed
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;240145

Thanks for the input so far!

If you stopped the Exchange services "cleanly" then the transaction logs are
committed to the database. That does not solve the problem with a backup
not purging the logs.

Have a look at KB 259751.

Also, a full successful backup will clear the logs, but maybe you should
think about having BE on a different drive - its logs can get mighty big.
Along with the store, the transaction log drive is the ultimate in Exchange
- you should protect both of these drives from other apps and files as much
as you can so that this very scenario doesn't happen again.

Verify that you are doing a full backup.
If you cant get it to work with BE, try doing a full online backup with

looks like the drive that the store is on has plenty of space (including
enough to defrag the store, etc). All services are running fine. But
obviously, I need to clear those logs, and want to make sure it's how I
remember it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Flusing log files - almost out of space

2003-02-19 Thread Pat Richard
NT 4 SP6 (I think)
Ex 5.5 SP4 - single org, site, server

One problem led to many others. Drive with the log files (also the system
drive) ran low on space, so the MTA stopped. I cleared some stuff off the
drive to get up to 150MB. MTA started, and it's working.

The disk space problem also caused BENT to not run correctly because it
couldn't write the catalog to the disk (space was down to 7MB when I got
there on Monday). I believe that this caused the Exchange logs to not get
flushed.

The logs now comprise 3GB of space (and growing). One successful backup has
run since, but again, the logs aren't flushed.

My question is (to refresh my memory)... Can I stop Exchange, copy the logs
to another drive for archiving, then kill the originals, and restart
Exchange? If I recall, it should recreate new log files, correct? (I'm
making the assumption that the transactions in the logs are committed). It
looks like the drive that the store is on has plenty of space (including
enough to defrag the store, etc). All services are running fine. But
obviously, I need to clear those logs, and want to make sure it's how I
remember it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Save them first, if you can, then whack em. You might want to increase the
log file size also.

RE: Nt event service won't start, corrupted event log files

2002-10-09 Thread Gavin Hall

Can't you just delete them? They live in \system32\config and are called
appevent.evt, sysevent.evt and secevent.evt. You'll obviously need the
necessary privs to delete these files, alternatively fire up event viewer
and clear them out.

As the event log hasn't started I assume these files won't be locked open,
so would thought you should be able to delete them.

IMC Log Files

2002-08-09 Thread Chris H

I am sure there is an easy answer to this but I havent found it in the MS KB
. . .
In my EXCHSRVR\IMCDATA\LOG dir I am getting log files with pretty big sizes
lately that are chewing up my drive space.
L0007.log, etc. FIle sizes ranging from 1 GB+ to 200 MB, etc. I stopped
and started the IMC service and this seemed to delete some of the old ones
hanging around, but today there are a ton and I am starting to run low on
disk space. I dont see a backup or a lot of mail queued up for the IMC so if
they are just log files I dont understand why they come and go and fluctuate
in size so much . . .

TIA!

So Exchange started and stores mounted without those logs? I guess the
server did not already need them anymore.

Why don't you temporarily turn on the circular logging and let the server
eat the unnecessary logs.

Thansk for the help with the BLB problem. I've gotten past the doing BLB
problem and now run a backup of the Information Store instead. I've run into
another problem, though.

We have a Dell box with the following:

C:\ RAID 5OS and .edb and .stm (27GB)
G:\ RAID 1Log files (18GB)

Now the problem. Since the Full backups weren't taking place the Log file
drive apparently got full. The admin didn't know what to do so he moved some
of the log files to a network share and restarted Exchange. Worked fine, but
now when I run the backup, I get an error saying that the database is
corrupt because the log files are missing. I can't put the log files back
since more have been created and they don't fit on either the C:\ or the G:\
drive.

Fortunately, when I talked to this guy he pointed me to the place on the
network where he archived the files. So I have the complete set of Log
files, just no way to put them on a single drive.

Ideas? Thoughts? Rants?

Matt Usher

That's not a good idea. Can you not temporarily hook up a "big" drive,
and move all the logs to it, do the back up, then move the logs back?

How big do you have your logs any ways?

RE: Exchange 2000 Log Files - Part II

2002-06-13 Thread Holt, Miles

This may not be the best way to resolve this but it should work.

Shut down exchange and do a full backup of your exchange server and logs (flat file).
Also backup all of the logs on the network share. Once complete
restart exchange. Now turn Circular Logging ON for your information store and restart
the exchange services. This will then purge ALL of the logs
currently on the drive. Once purged, turn Circular Logging OFF and restart again. Now
run a FULL online backup (or two).

Well that in itself is the problem. Let's make it even simpler. I have 50% of the
logfiles on a network share and 50% of the logfiles on the local
drive. All of the logs don't fit on the local drive, but they will fit on the network
share. The problem is that Exchange won't let me put the logs on a
network share.

I know that I need to put all the logs in one place. Can I use Windows compression to
make them fit?

That's not a good idea. Can you not temporarily hook up a "big" drive,
and move all the logs to it, do the back up, then move the logs back?

How big do you have your logs any ways?

The Exchange server is looking where the log files located. You moved them.
You have to tell Exchange where all new files are located then run your
backup.

Exchange 2000 Log Files - Part II

2002-06-13 Thread Matt Usher

Thansk for the help with the BLB problem. I've gotten past the doing BLB
problem and now run a backup of the Information Store instead. I've run into
another problem, though.

We have a Dell box with the following:

C:\ RAID 5OS and .edb and .stm (27GB)
G:\ RAID 1 Log files (18GB)

Now the problem. Since the Full backups weren't taking place the Log file
drive apparently got full. The admin didn't know what to do so he moved some
of the log files to a network share and restarted Exchange. Worked fine, but
now when I run the backup, I get an error saying that the database is
corrupt because the log files are missing. I can't put the log files back
since more have been created and they don't fit on either the C:\ or the G:\
drive.

Fortunately, when I talked to this guy he pointed me to the place on the
network where he archived the files. So I have the complete set of Log
files, just no way to put them on a single drive.

Ideas? Thoughts? Rants?

The Exchange Server has it's own backup. Nothing else gets backed up
with this job. I've been reading around and noticed a lot of "Don't do
Brick-Level Backups"...which we are. The question, then is how do I do
an online backup for the entire store?

I've changed the Delete Retention Time to 14 days as a way to
restore individual items for users.

First you should upgrade to 8.6 + the latest build.
Is the Exchange job part of another backup job or separate backup job of
only the Exchange Server?

I'm not sure if this is the right list. If not, please point me to an
appropriate place.

We have an Exchange2000 server running with SP2.
The Exchange Database is on one drive (G: - RAID 5)
The Exchange Logs are on another drive (L: - RAID 0)
Backup Exec 8.5 installed

We are running out of space on the L: drive. The logs are not being
flushed. We run a daily incremental backup and a weekly full backup.
After the backup finishes, the logs are not being flushed. I have looked
at the Backup Exec log and the backup runs successfully, but just
doesn't flush the logs.

Any ideas? Pointers? Places to start?

Thanks.

Again, can you get one level up? There should be a "Microsoft
Information Store" on the same level with Mailboxes, along with things
like C$, D$, System State, etc...

If you don't back up the information store, the logs will not be flushed
as it will not be considered as a FULL backup.

RE: Exchange 2000 Log Files

2002-06-10 Thread Andrew Chan

Again, can you get one level up? There should be a "Microsoft
Information Store" on the same level with Mailboxes, along with things
like C$, D$, System State, etc...

If you don't back up the information store, the logs will not be flushed
as it will not be considered as a FULL backup.

If you went to the job selection, hit properties, then go to the

We have an Exchange2000 server running with SP2.
The Exchange Database is on one drive (G: - RAID 5)
The Exchange Logs are on another drive (L: - RAID 0)
Backup Exec 8.5 installed

We are running out of space on the L: drive. The logs are not being
flushed. We run a daily incremental backup and a weekly full backup.
After the backup finishes, the logs are not being flushed. I have
looked at the Backup Exec log and the backup runs successfully, but
just doesn't flush the logs.

Any ideas? Pointers? Places to start?

Thanks.

There is only one database running (besides the public folders). I don't
see any way of backing up the public folders.

On the general tab, the backup method for files is set to
"INCREMENTAL - Changed Files - Reset Archive Bit " (I've created a job
that runs to flush
the logs). It was set at "NORMAL - Back Up Files - Reset Archive Bit"
and that was failing.

Also, on the Advanced tab, the "Use Open File Option if
available" checkbox is selected. I thought I read somewhere that Open
File backups shouldn't be used with Exchange.

Leonard - good catch. The hardware is RAID 1 not RAID 0.

Are you backing up all Databases in the Storage Group? Tranaction logs
will remain on the system until all DB's are backed up.

Unrelated: I hope the RAID 0 on your original email was a typo...

Are you saying that you are backing up only the mailboxes, and the
information store is not selected? If that's the case, that would
explain it why your logs are not flushed.

I have
looked at the Backup Exec log and the backup runs successfully, but
just doesn't flush the logs.

Any ideas? Pointers? Places to start?

Thanks.

First you should upgrade to 8.6 + the latest build.
Is the Exchange job part of another backup job or separate backup job of
only the Exchange Server?

RE: script log files

2002-05-20 Thread SPTBG-Exchange

Looks like you have answers for the first question. On the last one, the
answer (at least on 5.5) is that they are limited to 32K by default and are
over-written as needed.

I need to know the default location of the agent script log files. Does
anyone have any idea? As well as if the log file continues to grow in size
or writes over after a size limit?

RE: script log files

2002-05-14 Thread Siegfried Weber

Actually, it's a bit more complex ;-) The Exchange 5.5 Scripting Agent
script and it's log file is always stored in the same folder the Agent
is installed as hidden messages. An additional hidden message for each
installed Agent is stored in the Events_Config folder.

So you don't need to search the file system but use code, e.g. CDO 1.21
with VBScript, to open the folder in question and get the hidden
messages collection. Then you need to find the correct hidden message,
beware that there can be a whole bunch different ones because an Outlook
client stores a lot of stuff in such hidden message, and open it with
CDO 1.21. Finally you need to find the MAPI property which holds the
agent log information and read it.

RE: script log files

2002-05-14 Thread Listserver, Exchange MSER:EX

I remember seeing these logs once when I was poking around with MDBVU32.

I believe they are stored as hidden messages in the folder running the
script. You can get at them using CDO once you know the MAPI property tag.

I doubt it. I would suspect they are stored in the Events_Config folder
along with the script. They do overwrite after a certain size, but I don't
know exactly what that limit is.

Ok, I think I may have a security problem. This may sound stupid

Isn't there suppose to be a default share called 'Log Files' on Exchange
5.5? I could have sworn there was cause I was writing performance log
data to that directory and now it appears to be gone on all of my
servers.

Just want to verify.
