no you don't. a combo of CR/AR will do the trick. no rules
needed. in fact, if you have auto-forwarding turned off, rules won't
work anyway. besides, you wouldn't need a CR to do a rule.

In light of current events we are looking at Exchange 2000 Conferencing
Server in order to decrease our travel.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I have never even seen it.
I am getting ready to install the evaluation but wanted to know if
anyone had any comments or suggestions first.

Does it require a dedicated machine or does it run on the Exchange mail
server? Do I have to upgrade my 5.5 server to 2000 in order to run
Conferencing server (if it runs on a dedicated server)? Is Conferencing
server a stand alone package or does it require Exchange 2000 to run?

I know that some of these question are redundant but after talking to 2
different people at Microsoft Sales I am completely confused as to what
is required as a result of there conflicting answers.

Sincerely,
Vince

DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM

Strange DSL VPN or Outlook Problem

2001-09-20 Thread Kevan Dickinson

We have a user who connects to the Internet via ADSL to his ISP.
He then creates a VPN tunnel using Raptor Mobile to connect to our office.
The tunnel is successfully created and he can connect to our network and
synchronize with products like Goldmine.
However Intermittently he can not connect with the Exchange server and open
Outlook.
He can always ping the Exchange server by name and IP address.

He is using Win2000 Pro and Outlook 2000
We use Exchange 5.5 SP3 on NT4 SP6a Server.

If he uses his modem to dial out to the Internet and then Opens the VPN
Tunnel he can always connect with exchange successfully.

Has anyone experienced this.

I am not sure whether the problem lays in the DSL Connection, The VPN tunnel
or Exchange/Outlook.

But any hints or suggestions would be helpful.

Of course there is always the chance that it is user error but as this
person is based in France I can not see exactly what he is doing when it
fails to connect.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

RE: DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM

2001-09-20 Thread MLewis

I had this exact same error earlier this week while trying to run Exchange
Admin from my Windows 2000 workstation. The Exchange Server is 5.5 Service
Pack 4. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong, I
uninstalled Exchange Admin, reinstalled it, tried only running Service Pack
3, then tried it using Service pack 4 and still no luck. Then I remembered
that the only thing I had changed recently was my password. My password
included the Euro symbol (Alt 0128) and a few letters after. So I changed
my password back to a standard alpha and numerical password and voila,
Exchange Admin worked. Your scenario is different, but this is what
resolved my DS_E COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEM ERROR. Try changing the password
and let me know if it works.

Conferencing Server is a separate product, but it does require an
Exchange 2000 server somewhere in your domain. It's best installed on
its own server.

Subject: Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server Questions

Sincerely,
Vince

Changing Service Account Password

2001-09-20 Thread Friese, Casey
Title: Changing Service Account Password

I am about to embark on this endeavor and I'm looking to find any problems that I may run into.  I'm going to follow the process given by Microsoft in Q157780 - http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q157780

My setup is NT4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4.  The directions seem pretty straight forward for a single site Exchange Organization but I fear that I'm going to run into problems because we have multiple sites, 13 to be exact with 16 Exchange servers total.  The sites are spread all over the world and connected by various link speeds.

I am a little confused by the article in the sense that I'm not sure if I follow the first part of it for every site.  Paraphrasing, "Start by changing the service account password through the properties of the configuration container on the Service account password tab."  Do I need to do this for each site?

I understand the ramifications of doing this as well as the reasons why it should be done.  I don't want to make this change but my boss is pushing the issue.

Thank You,

Exchange & AD

2001-09-20 Thread Roger Ali

Hey Guys,

    We've
got a situation we are ready to go AD by upgrading our PDC from NT4.0 SP6a to
Win2k and then AD from that point.
The problem is we plan on taking our current domain ATCNTD1 to
ATICORPORATE.COM and the main location in Long Island (Corporate HQ) will be a
child domain ATILI.ATICORPORATE.COM, a child domain of the ATICORPORATE.COM
(also at Corporate HQ).  We've
got multiple locations in our NT Domain (ATCNTD1) with our other Exchange
Servers.  These sites will eventually
be child domains (e.g. Memphis ATIMP.ATICORPORATE.COM).  Right now we are at ATCNTD1 and we want
to be at a child domain level equal to all our sub locations which will also be
child domains.  The problem is we're
stumped about where we should locate our main Exchange Server (ATCNTS3).  We want to use ADC for mirroring our
Exchange Organization (2 Sites/Multiple Servers) users in AD and them
converting all the accounts to 2k accounts but we're not sure where we
should place our Exchange Organization at the master level or the child domain
level.  Should Exchange information be
put at ATICORPORATE.COM or at ATILI.ATICORPORATE.COM, any ideas?

OLD

(Child Domain)ATILI.ATICORPORATE.COM  *2    (Child
Domain) ATIMP.ATICORPORATE.COM

Does the Exchange 5.5 SP2 server we currently have (ATCNTS3)
get its information imported at the *1 or *2.  Are we required to have the main
exchange site located at the top level of the domain tree or does it have to
remain at the Child level where our other servers for the users at Corporate HQ
to find it.

Should we:

 Create
a new Master AD Domain first as ATICORPORATE.COM and then upgrade our
current Domain ATCNTD1 to Win2K and AD at the child level
ATILI.ATICORPORATE.COM, keeping the Main Exchange Server Organization and
Site at the child domain level.
Also this change will be in Mixed Mode for some older Win 9X
 clients.  Will our other
locations be affected if we do this as their exchange servers replicates
with ours and we have the Web Outlook box that relays all
 incoming/outgoing messages to our ISP.
 Upgrade
our current domain (ATCNTD1) to ATICORPORATE.COM and then create another
child domain and migrate our NT4 and Win2k Servers to that domain but keep
the Main Exchange & Web Outlook box at the ATICORPORATE.COM Level.  How will our older 9x clients be
affected if we put the main exchange server at the ATICORPORATE.COM Level
 instead of ATILI.ATICORPORATE.COM.

Thanks

Roger Ali

RE: Changing Service Account Password

2001-09-20 Thread Campbell, Rob

I have serveral sites across the state via some slow (128 frame) links.
Timing is an issue. I posted some scripts to the list earlier that I used
to change mine. It involves copying a batch file to the local servers, and
then using the rconsole service to execute the batch file locally, and
providing the new password as a command line option. This reduces the time
it takes to propogate the change to all the servers and eliminates the
problem with lockouts from the servers that haven't got the new password
yet.

Put the
service pack on both servers.  That
is the reason that they released it.
Also, make sure that you are NOT trying to back up the directories.  With Arcserve 6.61, when you select the
source, you need to go through network neighborhood until you see your Exchange
server, then select “Microsoft Exchange Server” under the server.  That is really all you need to back up.

Is anybody having a problem where the Nimda virus isn't being picked up by
the latest definitions from Symantec? I've just tested our server as our
workstations are falling like flies and it's not being detected... any
ideas (i'm on hold to symantec at the moment)... I've disabled IMC for the
time being as it doesn't seem to propigate over Outlook 2000 only outlook

want to be at a child domain level equal to all our sub locations which will

RE: Strange DSL VPN or Outlook Problem

2001-09-20 Thread Don Ely

Kevin and Martin,

This is typically due to RPC Communications between Outlook and
Exchange. I would start of by checking the MTU settings for the VPN
connection first. I believe, for the Cisco box the MTU had to be set to
1400 on the clients. Probably close to the same for Raptor.

Subject: Strange DSL VPN or Outlook Problem

We have a user who connects to the Internet via ADSL to his ISP. He then
creates a VPN tunnel using Raptor Mobile to connect to our office. The
tunnel is successfully created and he can connect to our network and
synchronize with products like Goldmine. However Intermittently he can
not connect with the Exchange server and open Outlook. He can always
ping the Exchange server by name and IP address.

I am not sure whether the problem lays in the DSL Connection, The VPN
tunnel or Exchange/Outlook.

But any hints or suggestions would be helpful.

Of course there is always the chance that it is user error but as this
person is based in France I can not see exactly what he is doing when it
fails to connect.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

RE: Mail Essentials or Antigen

2001-09-20 Thread David Everett
Title: RE: Mail Essentials or Antigen

Glad to see that others are as happy with Mail Essentials as I am. We're a company of about 40 people, and Mail Essentials works extremely well.

Does the content filtering so the junk mail doesn't get through, the disclaimers at the end of the mail, virus scanning before it hits Exchange, automatic updates.

The only problem I had, there were some limits to the amount of  "pre-filtering" that could be done. It looks like they've increased that limit in the new version I just downloaded. Can't wait to play with it this weekend. J

I can say the content filters work extremely well, and that is truly its best feature. It's kept most if not all the ex rated mail out, and has stopped information from leaving the company that shouldn't.

What are
you trying to do with the second SMTP server?  I mean, why do you need that if you already have an Exchange
Server on the same network?

Well nuts. Now that I got the SMTP server to finally work, I'm
getting 550 Relaying Prohibited errors.  Exchange 5.5, sp2.

Maybe I don't understand the Routing Restrictions tab.  I've
got a fairly simple setup - 1 exchange server - .2, and now a smtp server on
the same network - .6

Don't I just put the .6 address in the Hosts and Clients with
these IP Addresses?

Bounced Message (Service Unavailable)

Every so often a person from outside our company attempts to send an email

I'm trying to determine if the problem is with our server or someplace else
on the internet. The only thing that's leading me to believe it's not our
server is I'm not seeing any smtp traffic from the sender in our firewall
logs during the time the message is bounced.

Before we settled on a mail filtering software we

Mail Marshal has everything that they have and have
never had a limit on how many rules you can have. We can also do re-directing
based on any domain that we wish (e.g. one domain going to one server in India,
another domain going to NY etc., or use it to point elsewhere in case of
recovery.), we can also hide outgoing emails domain (though we have not used
that feature). We found their support (if you contract with them directly rather
than a reseller) to be superb; And VERY importantly they cost less than everyone
else (about less than a half of Mail Essentials).

Glad to see that others are as happy with
Mail Essentials as I am. We're a company of about 40 people, and Mail
  Essentials works extremely well.
Does the content filtering so the junk mail
doesn't get through, the disclaimers at the end of the mail, virus scanning
before it hits Exchange, automatic updates.

The only problem I had, there were some limits to the
amount of  "pre-filtering" that could be done. It looks like
they've increased that limit in the new version I
just downloaded. Can't wait to play with it this
  weekend. J
I can say the content filters work extremely
well, and that is truly its best feature. It's kept
most if not all the ex rated mail out, and has stopped information from
  leaving the company that shouldn't.

POP Exchange Gateway

2001-09-20 Thread Paul Armstrong

Hello All,

I have a small dilemma with a client. Because of the WTC tragedy, this
client of mine has lost Phone & Inet service. They need to have some
form of communication so we are trying to work on at least getting them
email access. There web host can provide them with POP accounts, there
server already has a modem attached to it, someone suggested using some
sort of Exchange POP gateway. I have never used one of those POP
gateways for Exchange but that is one alternative I have to look into
for them. Can someone recommend some apps that perform the functionality
of going out to POP3 servers and being able to route the mail received
to a Exchange mailbox or preferably the appropriate mailboxes. I was
told of an app called pop3gateway but the price is outrageous,
especially for around 8 users. Are there any cheaper, or even free
alternatives that I can look into. Your help would be appreciated. TIA!

Hey
Guys,

We've got a situation we are ready to go AD by upgrading our
PDC from NT4.0 SP6a to Win2k and then AD from that point.  The problem is we plan on
taking our current domain ATCNTD1 to ATICORPORATE.COM and the main
location in Long Island (Corporate HQ) will be a child domain
ATILI.ATICORPORATE.COM, a child domain of the ATICORPORATE.COM (also
at Corporate HQ).  We've
got multiple locations in our NT Domain (ATCNTD1) with our other
Exchange Servers.  These
sites will eventually be child domains (e.g. Memphis
ATIMP.ATICORPORATE.COM).
Right now we are at ATCNTD1 and we want to be at a child
domain level equal to all our sub locations which will also be child
domains.  The problem is
we're stumped about where we should locate our main Exchange Server
(ATCNTS3).  We want to
use ADC for mirroring our Exchange Organization (2 Sites/Multiple
Servers) users in AD and them converting all the accounts to 2k
accounts but we're not sure where we should place our Exchange
Organization at the master level or the child domain level.  Should
